In insects, vitellogenin (Vg) is generally viewed as a female‐specific protein. Its primary function is to supply nutrition to developing embryos. Here, we reported Vg from the male adults of a natural predator, Chrysopa pallens. The male Vg was depleted by RNAi. Mating with Vg‐deficient male downregulated female Vg expression, suppressed ovarian development and decreased reproductive output. Whole‐organism transcriptome analysis after male Vg knockdown showed no differential expression of the known spermatogenesis‐related regulators and seminal fluid protein genes, but a sharp downregulation of an unknown gene, which encodes a testis‐enriched big protein (Vcsoo). Separate knockdown of male Vg and Vcsoo disturbed the assembly of spermatid cytoplasmic organelles in males and suppressed the expansion of ovary germarium in mated females. Studies have shown that the change in lumbar spine bone mineral density with different osteoporosis drugs had a beneficial effect on the frequency of new vertebral and nonvertebral fractures in postmenopausal females, but their results were conflicting. This meta‐analysis was performed to evaluate this relationship. A systematic literature search up to May 2020 was performed and 20 studies with 73,390 postmenopausal females were included; of them, a total of 41,980 were treated with osteoporosis drugs and 31,410 with placebo. They reported relationships between the change in lumbar spine bone mineral density and the frequency of new vertebral and nonvertebral fractures in postmenopausal females. Odds ratio (OR) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) was calculated comparing the osteoporosis drugs to placebo effect on the frequency of new vertebral and nonvertebral fractures in postmenopausal females using the dichotomous method with a random or fixed‐effect model. Treatment with osteoporosis drugs had significantly lower frequency of new vertebral fractures (OR, 0.53; 95% CI, 0.45–0.63, P < 0.001) and nonvertebral fractures (OR, 0.82; 95% CI, 0.78–0.87, P < 0.001) compared to placebo in postmenopausal females. Treatment with osteoporosis drugs had a significantly lower frequency of new vertebral and nonvertebral fractures compared to placebo in postmenopausal females. This relationship forces us to recommend osteoporosis drugs in postmenopausal females to avoid any possible new fractures. A cost‐effective study is recommended. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Emerging evidence demonstrates that competing endogenous RNA (ceRNA) hypothesis has played a role in molecular biological mechanisms of cancer occurrence and development. But the effect of ceRNA network in bladder cancer (BC), especially lncRNA‐miRNA‐mRNA regulatory network of BC, was not completely expounded. By means of The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) database, we compared the expression of RNA sequencing (RNA‐Seq) data between 19 normal bladder tissue and 414 primary bladder tumours. Then, weighted gene co‐expression network analysis (WGCNA) was conducted to analyse the correlation between two sets of genes with traits. Interactions between miRNAs, lncRNAs and target mRNAs were predicted by MiRcode, miRDB, starBase, miRTarBase and TargetScan. Next, by univariate Cox regression and LASSO regression analysis, the 86 mRNAs obtained by prediction were used to construct a prognostic model which contained 4 mRNAs (ACTC1 + FAM129A + OSBPL10 + EPHA2). Then, by the 4 mRNAs in the prognostic model, a ceRNA regulatory network with 48 lncRNAs, 14 miRNAs and 4 mRNAs was constructed. To seek out novel promising biomarkers for predicting lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) prognosis, we conducted this study. First, 279 upregulated and 37 downregulated differentially expressed genes were obtained from LUAD and para‐carcinoma tissues by the Affymetrix GeneChip Human Transcriptome Array. Then, we randomly classified samples of LUAD data set GSE31210 as training and testing sets in a 1:1 ratio. Alcohol dehydrogenase 1C (ADH1C) and secreted phosphoprotein 1 (SPP1) were finally identified correlating with the LUAD survival through least absolute shrinkage and selection operator penalized Cox proportion hazards regression model, and applied to build a 2‐gene signature related to prognosis in training set. Univariate and multivariable survival analyses suggested that overall survival (OS) and relapse‐free survival (RFS) in the 2‐gene signature low‐risk group were better than the high‐risk group. Kaplan–Meier curves proved that elevated ADH1C expression and reduced SPP1 expression were related to better OS and RFS. Besides, the SPP1 expressed higher in LUAD than para‐carcinoma tissues using quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction assay. Finally, the association between the two genes and clinicopathological parameters in 80 LUAD were analyzed, it is suggested that SPP1 was relevant to epidermal growth factor receptor mutation. Bladder cancer (BC) is one of the most malignancies in terms of incidence and recurrence worldwide. The aim of this study is to find out novel and prognostic biomarkers for patients with BC. First, we identified 258 differentially expressed genes by using GSE19915 from Gene Expression Omnibus database. Second, a total of 33 modules were identified by constructing a coexpression network by using weighted gene coexpression network analysis and yellow module was regarded as the key module. Furthermore, by constructing protein–protein interaction networks, we preliminarily picked out 13 genes. Among them, four hub genes (CCNB1, KIF4A, TPX2, and TRIP13) were eventually identified by using five different methods (survival analysis, one‐way analysis of variance, the Spearman correlation analysis, receiver operating characteristic curve, and expression value comparison), which were significantly correlated with the prognosis of BC. The validation of transcriptional and translational levels made sense (based on Oncomine and The Human Protein Atlas database). Moreover, functional enrichment analysis suggested that all the hub genes played crucial roles in chromosome segregation, sister chromatid segregation, nuclear chromosome segregation, mitotic nuclear division, nuclear division, and organelle fission during cell mitosis. In addition, three of the hub genes (KIF4A, TPX2, and TRIP13) might be potential targets of cancer drugs according to the results of the genetical alteration. In conclusion, this study indicates that four hub genes have great predictive value for the prognosis of BC, and may contribute to the exploration of the further and more in‐depth research of BC. Objectives To demonstrate the functional results and emotional acceptance after scapulectomy for various malignant shoulder tumors. Methods Eight patients with malignant shoulder tumors who had undergone scapulectomy between April 2004 and March 2014 were retrospectively reviewed. They comprised seven men and one woman their mean age was 54 years (range, 24-69 years). All patients were diagnosed by pathological examination of biopsy specimens. The tumors were metastatic in four cases, having originated from a primary carcinoma of the liver in one patient, the lung in one patient and the kidney in two patients. The other four patients had primary malignant tumors in their scapulae, specifically, two scapular malignant fibrous histiocytomas, one scapular Ewing sarcoma and one soft tissue synovial sarcoma. The four patients with metastases were staged as III, and other four were staged as IIB. Six patients underwent total and two subtotal scapulectomy. The remaining soft tissues were sutured together directly in seven of the patients. The remaining patient, who had soft tissue synovial sarcoma, required transfer of a pedicle latissimus dorsi muscle flap. The functional results and emotional acceptance were evaluated by clinician using the Musculoskeletal Tumor Society ( MSTS) scoring system. Results The average duration of follow-up was 22.8 months. Four patients were continuously disease-free, three patients developed metastases and died of disease within 12 months of surgery and one patient with a scapular metastasis from the kidney survived with pulmonary nodules. No major complications, including infection or dislocation, occurred during or after surgery. The mean MSTS score was 16.3 (54%), which is similar to that previously reported in other studies of scapulectomy. There were no local tumor recurrences and only one patient developed pulmonary metastases. These outcomes are similar to those reported for scapular prostheses and there were fewer complications than in patients treated with allografts. The mean emotional acceptance score was 3.6 (72.5%). Conclusions Performing scapulectomies on patients with malignant shoulder tumors without prostheses or allograft reconstruction achieves good functional results and emotional acceptance with a low rate of complications. With a given free-flow electrophoresis device, reasonable conditions (electric field strength, carrier buffer conductivity, and flow rate) are crucial for an optimized separation. However, there has been no experimental study on how to choose reasonable general conditions for a free-flow electrophoresis device with a thermoelectric cooler in view of Joule heat generation. Herein, comparative experiments were carried out to propose the selection procedure of general conditions in this study. The experimental results demonstrated that appropriate conditions were (i) <67 V/cm electric field strength; (ii) lower than 1.3 mS/cm carrier buffer conductivity (Tris-HCl: 20 mM Tris was titrated by HCl to pH 8.0); and (iii) higher than 3.6 mL/min carrier buffer flow rate. Furthermore, under inappropriate conditions (e.g. 400 V voltage and 40 mM Tris-HCl carrier buffer), the free-flow electrophoresis separation would be destroyed by bubbles caused by more Joule heating. Additionally, a series of applications under the appropriate conditions were performed with samples of model dyes, proteins (bovine serum albumin, myoglobin, and cytochrome c), and cells ( Escherichia coli, Streptococcus thermophilus, and Saccharomyces cerevisiae). The separation results showed that under the appropriate conditions, separation efficiency was obviously better than that in the previous experiments with randomly or empirically selected conditions. The novel coronavirus has been designated as severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), and the resulting disease has been designated as coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). In this study, we compared laboratory data of patients with 67 pediatric patients with confirmed influenza and 24 pediatric patients diagnosed with COVID-19. In conclusion, the results of our study suggest that COVID-19 should be suspected in pediatric patients with flu-like symptoms without elevation of AST. [Extracted from the article]

In this report, we demonstrate that sodium hydrosulfide (NaHS), a hydrogen sulfide (H2S) donor, promoted adventitious root formation mediated by auxin and nitric oxide (NO). Application of the H2S donor to seedling cuttings of sweet potato ( Ipomoea batatas L.) promoted the number and length of adventitious roots in a dose-dependent manner. It was also verified that H2S or HS− rather than other sulfur-containing components derived from NaHS could be attributed to the stimulation of adventitious root formation. A rapid increase in endogenous H2S, indole acetic acid (IAA) and NO were sequentially observed in shoot tips of sweet potato seedlings treated with HaHS. Further investigation showed that H2S-mediated root formation was alleviated by N-1-naphthylphthalamic acid (NPA), an IAA transport inhibitor, and 2-(4-carboxyphenyl)-4,4,5,5-tetramethylimidazoline-1-oxyl-3-oxide (cPTIO), an NO scavenger. Similar phenomena in H2S donor-dependent root organogenesis were observed in both excised willow ( Salix matsudana var. tortuosa Vilm) shoots and soybean ( Glycine max L.) seedlings. These results indicated that the process of H2S-induced adventitious root formation was likely mediated by IAA and NO, and that H2S acts upstream of IAA and NO signal transduction pathways. Aim: To determine the clinical characteristics of vulvovaginal candidiasis (VVC), the Candida species involved and the antifungal susceptibility of Candida species isolated from patients with VVC. Methods: Candida organisms were cultured from samples obtained from patients who presented with VVC to the Gynecology Department, Peking University Shenzhen Hospital. Antifungal susceptibility testing was performed using a commercial agar diffusion test. Results: Of the 1070 cases of VVC reported in this study, 36.5% were uncomplicated VVC, and 63.5% were complicated VVC. Twenty-four patients were identified as having two species of Candida. Candid albicans alone was isolated from 89.5% of cases ( n = 958). Candida glabrata was isolated from 85 cases (7.9%), Candida tropicalis from 10 (0.9%), Saccharomyces cerevisiae from eight (0.7%), Candida parapsilosis from six (0.6%), Candida famata from two (0.2%), and Candida krusei from one case (0.1%). All isolates of Candida albicans were susceptible to nystatin. The resistant rate of Candida albicans to azole agents was 0–4.9%. Conclusion: Candida albicans was the predominant Candida species isolated from this series of patients with VVC. Resistance of vaginal Candida albicans isolates to antifungal agents was infrequent. The extract of Ginkgo biloba (EGb), containing 24% flavone glycosides and 6% terpenoids, is widely used to treat early-stage Alzheimer's disease, vascular dementia, peripheral claudication and vascular tinnitus. Its marked antioxidant activity has recently been demonstrated in both cell lines and animals. Glutathione (GSH) plays an important role in the antioxidant system by conjugating to xenobiotics to facilitate their export from cells. Glutamate cysteine ligase (GCL) is the rate-limiting enzyme for GSH synthesis and its catalytic subunit (GCLC) determines this de novo synthesis. Thus, induction of GCLC is a strategy to enhance the antioxidant capability in cells. The present study aimed to investigate the induction effect of EGb on GCLC in HepG2 and Hep1c1c7 cell lines. Real-time PCR, Western blot and enzyme activity assay were used to detect induction and it was found that GCLC was induced by EGb in these two cell lines.
