Aims/Introduction: To evaluate the differences in cardiac autonomic function, cardiac structure and diastolic function between individuals with diabetic foot (DF) and those with diabetes but without DF. Materials and Methods: A total of 413 individuals with DF and 437 without DF who underwent a 24‐h electrocardiogram Holter and a Doppler echocardiogram were included. The heart rate variability parameters to evaluate cardiac autonomic function, and the indices for the assessment of cardiac structure and left ventricular (LV) diastolic function, including left atrium, LV posterior wall thickness, interventricular septum and E/e′ ratio, were measured or calculated. Propensity score matching was used for the sensitivity analysis to minimize potential imbalance. Results: In both the crude and propensity score matching analyses, significant differences were observed in heart rate variability between individuals with and without DF, as evidenced by lower standard deviation of the normal sinus interval, lower low‐frequency power/high‐frequency power ratio, lower standard deviation of the 5‐min average RR intervals, lower low‐frequency power, lower percentage of normal adjacent RR interval difference >50 ms, lower root mean square of successive RR interval differences and lower high‐frequency power (all P < 0.05). In multivariate analysis, DF showed an independent negative correlation with the aforementioned indices of heart rate variability (all P < 0.05). Individuals with DF showed higher left atrium, LV posterior wall thickness, interventricular septum and a higher E/e′ ratio than those without DF in the crude analysis (all P < 0.05), whereas these indices were no longer associated with DF in the multivariate analysis and the propensity score matching analyses. Conclusions: Cardiac autonomic modulation was more severely impaired in individuals with DF than in their counterparts without DF. Lung cancer is a common malignancy characterized by ferroptosis, an iron‐dependent form of cell death caused by excessive lipid peroxidation. The disruption of the ubiquitination system plays a crucial role in tumor development and spread. In recent years, there has been increasing interest in utilizing ferroptosis for lung cancer treatment; however, the precise mechanism of how ubiquitination modulates ferroptosis remains unclear. We used databases to analyze STUB1 expression patterns in lung cancer tissues compared to normal tissues and performed immunohistochemistry. The functional role of STUB1 was investigated through gain‐of‐function and loss‐of‐function experiments both in vitro and in vivo. Malondialdehyde levels, Fe2+ content, and cell viability assays were employed to evaluate ferroptosis status. Downstream targets of STUB1 were identified through screening and validated using immunoprecipitation and ubiquitination assays. Our findings demonstrate that STUB1 is downregulated in lung cancer cells and functions as an inhibitor of their growth and metastasis both in vitro and in vivo while promoting ferroptosis. Mechanistically, STUB1 induces ferroptosis through E3 ligase‐dependent degradation of the ferroptosis suppressor HSPB1. Furthermore, our study elucidated the specific types and sites of modification on HSPB1 mediated by STUB1. This research establishes STUB1 as a tumor suppressor influencing proliferation of lung cancer cells as well as the epithelial‐mesenchymal transition process associated with it. Artificial light at night has been considered an emerging threat to global biodiversity. However, the impacts of artificial light on foraging behavior in most wild animals remain largely unclear. Here, we aimed to assess whether artificial light affects foraging behavior in Asian parti‐colored bats (Vespertilio sinensis). We manipulated the spectra of light‐emitting diode (LED) lighting in a laboratory. Using video and audio recording, we monitored foraging onset, total foraging time, food consumption, freezing behavior (temporary cessation of body movement), and echolocation vocalizations in triads of bats under each lighting condition. Analyses showed that the foraging activities of experimental bats were reduced under LED light. Green, yellow, and red light had greater negative effects on bats' foraging onset, total foraging time, and food consumption than white and blue light. LED light of different spectra induced increased freezing time and echolocation vocalizations in captive bats, except for the white light. The peak wavelength of light emission correlated positively with freezing time, estimated echolocation pulse rate (the number of echolocation pulses per minute), and foraging onset, but negatively with total foraging time and food consumption. These results demonstrate that artificial light disturbs foraging behavior in Asian parti‐colored bats. Summary: This paper proposes a multi‐loads capacitive power transfer (CPT) system based on a single relay plate for railway monitoring systems. The proposed system can supply power wirelessly to the monitoring system on the trackside and train carriages simultaneously to eliminate traditional power cables connection and prevent frequent battery replacement. Unlike the traditional multiple loads CPT systems, the proposed system uses only one relay plate, which is more stable and uncomplicated considering the coupler installation space and moving dynamically in the railway system. The proposed system adopts a CL‐LCLC‐CL compensation network to achieve a load‐independent output. The limitation of the charging load quantity is given in detail considering the coupler voltage stress distribution. An experimental prototype with three loads is also built to verify the effectiveness of the proposed system. Experimental results show that the proposed system achieves wireless power transfer to multiple loads simultaneously with two loads on the receiver and one on the repeater side. Hypoxic–ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) is a leading cause of long‐term neurological disability in neonates and adults. Despite emerging advances in supportive care, like the most effective approach, hypothermia, poor prognosis has still been present in current clinical treatment for HIE. Stem cell therapy has been adopted for treating cerebral ischemia in preclinical and clinical trials, displaying its promising therapeutic value. At present, reported treatments for stroke employed stem cells to replace the lost neurons and integrate them into the existing host circuitry, promoting the release of growth factors to support and stimulate endogenous repair processes and so on. In this review, a meaningful overview to numerous studies published up to now was presented by introducing the preclinical and clinical research status of stem cell therapy for cerebral ischemia and hypoxia, discussing potential therapeutic mechanisms of stem cell transplantation for curing HI‐induced brain injury, summarizing a series of approaches for marking transplanted cells and existing imaging systems for stem cell labelling and in vivo tracking and expounding the endogenous regeneration capability of stem cells in the newborn brain when subjected to an HI insult. Additionally, it is promising to combine stem therapy with neuromodulation through specific regulation of neural circuits. The crucial neural circuits across different brain areas related to functional recovery are of great significance for the application of neuromodulation strategies after the occurrence of neonatal hypoxic–ischemic encephalopathy (NHIE). Objective. To reduce diabetic foot ulcer (DFU) occurrence or recurrence, diabetic therapeutic footwear is widely recommended in clinical practice for at-risk patients. However, the effectiveness of therapeutic footwear is controversial. Thus, we performed a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) to examine whether special therapeutic footwear could reduce the incidence of DFU. Method. We systematically searched multiple electronic databases (Medline, EMBASE, and EMB databases) to identify eligible studies published from inception to June 11, 2021. The database search, quality assessment, and data extraction were independently performed by two reviewers. Efficacy (i.e., incidence of DFU) was explored using the R'meta' package (version 4.15-1). To obtain more robust results, the random-effects model and the Hartung-Knapp-Sidik-Jonkman method were selected to assess pooled data. Metaregression analysis and sensitivity analysis were performed to explore heterogeneity, and publication bias was assessed by a visual inspection of funnel plots and the AS-Thompson test. Results. Eight RCTs with a total of 1,587 participants were identified from the search strategy. Compared with conventional footwear, special therapeutic footwear significantly reduced the incidence of DFU (RR 0.49; 95% CI, 0.28-0.84), with no evidence of publication bias (P = 0.69). Unexpectedly, the effectiveness of special therapeutic footwear had a reverse correlation with the intervention time (coefficient = 0.085 , P < 0.05) in the metaregression analysis. Conclusion. Special therapeutic footwear with offloading properties is effective in reducing the incidence of DFU. However, the effect may decrease gradually over time. Despite undefined reasons, the optimal utility time and renewal frequency of special therapeutic footwear should be considered. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this study, a total of 179,907 blood samples from populations with suspected Brucella spp. infections were collected between 2008 and 2020 and analyzed by the Rose Bengal plate test (RBPT) and serum agglutination test (SAT). Moreover, conventional biotyping, B. abortus‐melitensis‐ovis‐suis polymerase chain reaction (AMOS‐PCR), and multiple‐locus variable‐number tandem repeat analysis (MLVA) was applied to characterize the isolated strains. A total of 8103 (4.50%) samples were positive in RBPT, while 7705 (4.28%, 95% confidence interval (CI) 4.19–4.37) samples were positive in SAT. There was a significant difference in seroprevalence for human brucellosis over time, in different areas and different cities (districts) (χ2 = 2 = 32.23, 1984.14, and 3749.51, p <.05). The highest seropositivity (8.22% (4, 965/60393; 95% CI 8.00–8.44) was observed in Yulin City, which borders Inner Mongolia, Ningxia, and Gansu Province, China, regions that have a high incidence of human brucellosis. Moreover, 174 Brucella strains were obtained, including nine with B. melitensis bv. 1, 145 with B. melitensis bv. 3, and 20 with B. melitensis variants. After random selection, 132 B. melitensis were further genotyped using MLVA‐16. The 132 strains were sorted into 100 MLVA‐16 genotypes (GTs) (GT 1–100), 81 of which were single GTs represented by singular independent strains. The remaining 19 shared GTs involved 51 strains, and each GT included two to seven isolates from the Shaan northern and Guanzhong areas. These data indicated that although sporadic cases were a dominant epidemic characteristic of human brucellosis in this province, more than 38.6% (51/132) outbreaks were also found in the Shaan northern area and Guanzhong areas. The 47 shared MLVA‐16 GTs were observed in strains (n = 71) from this study and strains (n = 337) from 19 other provinces of China. These data suggest that strains from the northern provinces are a potential source of human brucellosis cases in Shaanxi Province. The expansion of anthropogenic noise poses an emerging threat to the survival and reproductive success of various organisms. Previous investigations have focused on the detrimental effects of anthropogenic noise on the foraging behavior in some terrestrial and aquatic animals. Nevertheless, the role of airport noise in impairing foraging activities of most wild animals has been neglected. Here, we aimed to assess whether foraging behavior in free‐living Japanese pipistrelle bats (Pipistrellus abramus) can be disturbed by airport noise. We used audio recording to monitor foraging activities of bats at 11 sites around the runway of a municipal airport. We quantified noise level and spectra, aircraft activity, habitat type, nightly temperature, wind speed, and moon phase for each site. The analysis revealed that noise level and aircraft activity were significant negative predictors for the number of bat passes and feeding buzzes around the runway, even after controlling for the effects of other environmental factors. There was no marked spectral overlap between bat echolocation pulses and airport noise in the presence and absence of low‐flying aircraft. The spectro‐temporal parameters of echolocation vocalizations emitted by bats were dependent on noise level, aircraft activity, and habitat type. These results provide correlative evidence that airport noise can reduce foraging activities of wild pipistrelle bats. Our findings add to the current knowledge of adverse impacts of airport noise on foraging bats in artificial ecosystems and provide a basis for further research on the mechanisms behind noise pollution near airports. To eliminate the plug‐in/out actions for automatic wharves, a splitting‐coil‐based inductive power transfer (IPT) system is proposed to improve transfer efficiency for reefer container wireless charging. Firstly, the power requirement of a reefer container only hits a few operation points and each operation point is in correspondence to an individual resistance point (IRP); secondly, the maximum efficiency of an IPT system can be achieved with the optimal load resistance (OLR). Therefore, the system efficiency can be improved by transforming the OLR into or near the IRPs. The idea of this work is to create double OLRs of the system by altering the splitting coils operating in parallel mode or series mode with switches, then to select the proper OLRs to match the IRPs for efficiency improvement. A 0.54 kW prototype was built to validate the performance of the proposed approach. The results indicate that with the proposed method, the system can maintain the system efficiency >90.7% from 14 Ω (0.54 kW) to 60 Ω (0.13 kW), with an improvement of 7.0% at most compared with that of the system without the optimisation in the same load resistance range. Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the most prevalent type of hepatic carcinoma. Long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) are considered crucial regulators of gene expression; however, their functions in HCC are not well understood. Thus, the present study is aimed at elucidating the functions of the lncRNA HOXA-AS3 in HCC. The functions of the HOXA-AS3/miR-455-5p/programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) axis were investigated in vitro via qRT-PCR and dual-luciferase reporter assays. The effect of HOXA-AS3 expression on tumor growth and metastasis was assessed using a mouse xenograft model. High HOXA-AS3 expression was observed in the HCC cell lines. Furthermore, overexpression of HOXA-AS3 in HCC cells enhanced proliferation, migration, and invasion, regulated the cell cycle, and retarded apoptosis. We also identified an miR-455-5p binding site in HOXA-AS3. By sponging miR-455-5p, HOXA-AS3 increased the expression of PD-L1. Additionally, both the inhibition of PD-L1 and overexpression of miR-455-5p reversed the effects on cell proliferation and invasion triggered by the overexpression of HOXA-AS3. In conclusion, HOXA-AS3 modulated the functions of HCC cells through the miR-455-5p/PD-L1 axis. Therefore, HOXA-AS3 may be a novel therapeutic target for HCC. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A variety of symmetrical thiosulfonates are synthesized via Cu‐catalyzed reductive homocoupling of aryl sulfonyl chlorides. This protocol uses organic amine acting as a mild reductant and low‐cost copper as an effective catalyst. Such a reductive coupling process features a broad substrate scope and good functional group tolerance. Related thiosulfonate products can also be converted into diverse functional molecules. Neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NACT) remains an attractive alternative for controlling locally advanced cervical cancer. However, approximately 15–34% of women do not respond to induction therapy. To develop a risk stratification tool, 56 patients with stage IB‐IIB cervical cancer are included in 2 research centers from the discovery cohort. Patient‐specific somatic mutations led to NACT non‐responsiveness are identified by whole‐exome sequencing. Next, CRISPR/Cas9‐based library screenings are performed based on these genes to confirm their biological contribution to drug resistance. A 15‐gene classifier is developed by generalized linear regression analysis combined with the logistic regression model. In an independent validation cohort of 102 patients, the classifier showed good predictive ability with an area under the curve of 0.80 (95% confidence interval (CI), 0.69–0.91). Furthermore, the 15‐gene classifier is significantly associated with patient responsiveness to NACT in both univariate (odds ratio, 10.8; 95% CI, 3.55–32.86; p = 2.8 × 10−5) and multivariate analysis (odds ratio, 17.34; 95% CI, 4.04–74.40; p = 1.23 × 10−4) in the validation set. In conclusion, the 15‐gene classifier can accurately predict the clinical response to NACT before treatment, representing a promising approach for guiding the selection of appropriate treatment strategies for locally advanced cervical cancer. To resonate with the capacitive power transfer (CPT) system, inductors are usually needed, while additional capacitors are required for the inductive power transfer (IPT) system. To take advantage of the inductance of the IPT system, this study proposes a misalignment tolerance wireless power transfer system that employs the IPT coupler to compensate part of CPT's capacitance for railway applications. In the proposed system, two power transfer paths are formed by the IPT and CPT couplers. Additionally, the system merits a good anti‐misalignment ability by carefully designing the parameters of the proposed system. In a well‐alignment case, only the CPT coupler is utilised to transfer power. While in misalignment case, the IPT coupler is activated to transfer power to improve the misalignment tolerance. Besides, the transfer capability of the combined system can be improved when the misalignment happens. The system coupler, connection method and output power characteristics are presented in detail. Then, the general design procedure is provided with an example system at 1 kW. Experimental results show that the maximum variation of the output is 5.6% when misalignment is up to 250 mm (50%). Acoustic signals play a crucial role in transmitting information and maintaining social stability in gregarious animals, especially in echolocating bats, which rely primarily on biological sonar for navigating in the dark. In the context of foraging without relying on tactile, visual or olfactory cues, acoustic signals convey information not only on food but also on ownership and defense of resources. However, studies on such information remain fragmentary. In the present study, we aim to document the social vocal repertoire of Myotis macrodactylus at natural foraging sites. Multiple acoustic analyses and spectrographic classification revealed a rich foraging vocal repertoire comprising 6 simple syllables and 2 composites. Discriminant function analyses associated with a subset‐validation procedure provided an optimal method to spectrographically classify all recorded sounds into different syllable types. Multidimensional scaling of median values of multiple parameters further confirmed notable differences among these syllables in a 3‐D space. In addition, Euclidean distance analysis showed that there were some spectral similarities between specific social vocal syllables and feeding buzzes, which implied a potential jamming role. Altogether, the data indicate that bats at foraging sites under natural conditions used variant social vocalizations with different functions in addition to echolocation calls, providing supporting evidence for further work on the function and vocal mechanisms of acoustic communication in mammals. This study develops a novel equaliser by combining wireless power transmission (WPT) and switch array for seriesconnected batteries. The physical isolation achieved by WPT can offer unique benefits that traditional equalisers can hardly provide. Parameters of the WPT system are properly designed to achieve an equivalent constant-current output, which can maximise the speed of balance and ensure the health of batteries. This methodology can ensure each battery is connected independently to the inverter through the switch array circuit. Therefore, balancing for either a single battery or multiple batteries can be achieved. In the experiment, the prototype system is built. Experimental results show that the proposed equalisation system can achieve high overall system efficiency (above 87.2%) when balancing four series-connected battery modules. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Cysticercosis is a cosmopolitan zoonotic parasitic disease infected by larval of Taenia solium (T. solium). Several drugs for the treatment of cysticercosis, such as praziquantel, albendazole, and mebendazole, have certain toxicity and side effects. Considering that there is no vaccine available, we studied a new vaccine for cysticercosis in this study. The complete TSOL18 gene and the optimized SP-TSOL18 gene fragments were obtained using PCR-based accurate synthesis method. The secretory and intracellular recombinant pMG36e-SP-TSOL18/Lactococcus lactis (L. lactis) and pMG36e-TSOL18/L. lactis vaccines of T. solium were prepared. Immune responses in mice orally immunized with these two recombinant L. lactis vaccines were analyzed by the determination of specific antibodies (IgG, IgG1, IgG2a, and sIgA) in serum, spleen lymphocyte proliferation, and cytokines (IL-2, IFN-γ, IL-4, and IL-10) in spleen lymphocyte culture supernatant. Our results showed that, after the first immunization, in these two recombinant L. lactis vaccine groups, the levels of serum specific IgG, IgG2a, and IgG1 increased on 14-56 d and reached the highest level on days 42, 42, and 28, respectively. The level of specific sIgA of intestinal mucosa also increased on 14-56 d and reached the highest level on day 42. The level of spleen lymphocyte proliferation increased on 14-56 d and reached the highest level on day 42. The levels of IL-2, IFN-γ, IL-4, and IL-10 in spleen lymphocyte culture supernatant increased on 14-56 d and reached the highest level on days 42, 42, 28, and 28, respectively. These results indicated that the recombinant pMG36e-SP-TSOL18/L. lactis and pMG36e-TSOL18/L. lactis vaccines can induce specific cellular, humoral, and mucosal immune responses in mice with oral vaccination. More importantly, the recombinant pMG36e-SP-TSOL18/L. lactis vaccine has a better immune effect. Ecologists and evolutionary biologists have a long-standing interest in the patterns and causes of geographical variation in animals' acoustic signals. Nonetheless, the processes driving acoustic divergence are still poorly understood. Here, we studied the geographical variation in echolocation vocalizations (commonly referred to as echolocation 'pulses' given their short duration and relatively stereotypic nature, and to contrast them from the communicative vocalizations or 'calls') of a widespread bat species Hipposideros armiger in south China, and assessed whether the acoustic divergence was driven by either ecological selection, or cultural or genetic drift. Our results revealed that the peak frequency of echolocation pulses varied significantly across populations sampled, with the maximum variation of about 6 kHz. The peak frequency clustered into three groups: eastern and western China, Hainan and southern Yunnan. The population differences in echolocation pulses were not significantly related to the variation in climatic (mean annual temperature, mean annual relative humidity, and mean annual precipitable water) or genetic (genetic distance) factors, but significantly related to morphological (forearm length) variation which was correlated with mean annual temperature. Moreover, the acoustic differences were significantly correlated with geographical and latitudinal distance after controlling for 'morphological distance'. Thus, neither direct ecological selection nor genetic drift contributed to the acoustic divergence observed in H. armiger. Instead, we propose that the action of both indirect ecological selection (i.e. selection on body size) as well as cultural drift promote, in part, divergence in echolocation vocalizations of individuals within geographically distributed populations. Osteoblastoma is a benign bone-forming neoplasm that occurs commonly in the posterior elements of the spine and the sacrum. However, so far there has been no report of intradural osteoblastoma described in the literature. We present a unique case of intraspinal dural-based osteoblastoma with aneurysmal bone cyst-like change without evidence of vertebral involvement. An 11-year-old Chinese girl presented with a 3-month history of gradually progressive back pain and a weakness of both lower limbs. Thoracic MRI revealed a well-demarcated subdural mass at the T5 level with heterogeneous enhancement. Histologically, the tumor was found to be attached to the dura and composed of numerous osteoid spicules and trabecular bone with diffusely scattered osteoclast-type, multinucleated giant cells. Ectactic blood vessels and blood-filled cystic spaces were also observed. A diagnosis of primary intraspinal dural-based osteoblastoma with aneurysmal bone cyst-like change was made. To our best knowledge, this is possibly the first case of primary osteoblastoma arising from meninges. Meningeal osteocartilaginous tumors are rare, with obscure histogenesis. The differential diagnosis of osteoblastoma in unusual locations is difficult and the confirmation of diagnosis should be cautiously made. Awareness of dural-based osteoblastoma and its histological features is important to avoid a diagnostic pitfall caused by histological similarities to other intra-craniospinal lesions with osteoid differentiation or bone formation. As a classic appearance modelling method in object tracking, patch‐based approach is believed to own natural superiority in handling local occlusion to its divide‐and‐conquer philosophy. However, in facing of more severe application conditions, such as heavy occlusion, part deformation and illumination change, traditional patch‐based method may also fail due to the lack of sufficient matching patches. To address this problem, temporal stability as well as spatial salience to collaboratively improve patch selection and update schemes, resulting in a robust tracking algorithm for more challenging scenarios are proposed.
