The Society for Melanoma Research (SMR) was created 20 years ago and has unequivocally contributed to the vast progress of the field, particularly for the treatment of melanoma patients with metastatic disease by facilitating synergistic collaborations between clinicians, researchers at the bench, and industry. In commemoration of the 20th anniversary of the first SMR International Congress (held in 2003 in Philadelphia), we look to the future by highlighting the perspectives of the next generation of rising stars, medical, and graduate students across six continents. Aims: In order to understand how sex differences impact the generalizability of randomized clinical trials (RCTs) in patients with heart failure (HF) and reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF), we sought to compare clinical characteristics and clinical outcomes between RCTs and HF observational registries stratified by sex. Methods and results: Data from two HF registries and five HFrEF RCTs were used to create three subpopulations: one RCT population (n = 16 917; 21.7% females), registry patients eligible for RCT inclusion (n = 26 104; 31.8% females), and registry patients ineligible for RCT inclusion (n = 20 810; 30.2% females). Clinical endpoints included all‐cause mortality, cardiovascular mortality, and first HF hospitalization at 1 year. Males and females were equally eligible for trial enrolment (56.9% of females and 55.1% of males in the registries). One‐year mortality rates were 5.6%, 14.0%, and 28.6% for females and 6.9%, 10.7%, and 24.6% for males in the RCT, RCT‐eligible, and RCT‐ineligible groups, respectively. After adjusting for 11 HF prognostic variables, RCT females showed higher survival compared to RCT‐eligible females (standardized mortality ratio [SMR] 0.72; 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.62–0.83), while RCT males showed higher adjusted mortality rates compared to RCT‐eligible males (SMR 1.16; 95% CI 1.09–1.24). Similar results were also found for cardiovascular mortality (SMR 0.89; 95% CI 0.76–1.03 for females, SMR 1.43; 95% CI 1.33–1.53 for males). Conclusion: Generalizability of HFrEF RCTs differed substantially between the sexes, with females having lower trial participation and female trial participants having lower mortality rates compared to similar females in the registries, while males had higher than expected cardiovascular mortality rates in RCTs compared to similar males in registries. Cancer metastasis which predominantly occurs through blood and lymphatic vessels, is the leading cause of death in cancer patients. Consequently, several anti-angiogenic agents have been approved as therapeutic agents for human cancers such as metastatic renal cell carcinoma. Also, anti-lymphangiogenic drugs such as monoclonal antibodies VGX-100 and IMC-3C5 have undergone phase I clinical trials for advanced and metastatic solid tumors. Although antitumor- associated angiogenesis has proven to be a promising therapeutic strategy for human cancers, this approach is fraught with toxicities and development of drug resistance. This emphasizes the need for alternative anti-(lymph)angiogenic drugs. The use of zebrafish has become accepted as an established model for highthroughput screening, vascular biology, and cancer research. Importantly, various zebrafish transgenic lines have now been generated that can readily discriminate different vascular compartments. This now enables detailed in vivo studies that are relevant to both human physiological and tumor (lymph)angiogenesis to be conducted in zebrafish. This review highlights recent advancements in the zebrafish anti-vascular screening platform and showcases promising new anti-(lymph)angiogenic compounds that have been derived from this model. The high-strength wastes generated from the oleo chemical industry, namely oleo chemical effluent (OCE) and glycerin pitch (GP), have raised a serious disposal problem. An aerobic digestion after chemical pre-treatment and costly incineration/landfill disposal is the only currently available treatment method for OCE and GP, respectively. Due to the high alkalinity and organic content of GP, there is a potential to anaerobically co-digest OCE with GP, which can be used to neutralise OCE's acidity while providing the required organic strength for biogas production. The objective of this study is to evaluate the feasibility of anaerobic co-digestion (ACD) of OCE and GP based on their maximum available energy potential. This study was evaluated based on 85% chemical oxygen demand removal efficiency. The study disclosed that GP is able to generate maximum potential methane production of 6716 m3/d and energy of 0.097 MW/h, which are two times higher than that in OCE. The cost benefit analysis also revealed that with the establishment of ACD, a cost saving of USD 1 693 716/year from disposal and an earning profit of USD 54 544/year from energy generation can be achieved. The mechanistic modeling of biodiesel production process in membrane reactor with the consideration of chemical reaction, phase equilibrium, and ultrafiltration is important for the membrane reactor design. In part II of this work, the chemical and phase equilibrium (CPE) model for crude palm oil transesterification reaction in the membrane reactor developed in part I is extended to an integration of CPE with modified Maxwell-Stefan model, which considers multicomponent mass transport phenomena of concentration polarization and intramembrane. A good fit of simulated permeate fluxes and apparent solute rejection to the experimental data shows that the model has a good prediction capability. Reversible fouling was found to be the major fouling and no pore plugging was observed. Simulation results verified that micelles were retained by the membrane at CPO:MEOH molar ratio of 1:24 and catalyst concentration of 0.5 wt %. Using a membrane reactor for reversible transesterification reaction involves reaction and product separation within a single unit. However, a pseudohomogeneous reaction and heterogeneous separation must be maintained for successful membrane reactor operation. Present research is aimed to develop an integrated model of chemical and phase equilibrium (CPE) and modified Maxwell-Stefan equation that describes the simultaneous CPE and mass transport phenomena of biodiesel production from crude palm oil (CPO) using a membrane reactor. Pangolins are considered difficult to maintain in zoos, often attributed to problems in feeding management. Taipei Zoo's designation as a wildlife rescue center for Chinese pangolins ( Manis pentadactyla) has resulted in long term feeding experience with development of diets that support recovery, maintenance, and reproduction, as well as experimental opportunities to further understand digestive physiology to optimize nutrition. Opportunistic dissection of 10 animals revealed details of the tongue, salivary glands, stomach and gastrointestinal tract (GIT), including confirmation of anatomical differences between Asian and African pangolin species. Length of the total GIT relative to body length (∼ 9:1) was greater than found in domestic carnivores, more similar to omnivorous species. Intake and digestion trials conducted with 4 animals demonstrated that pangolins maintained body weights (BW; 6-9 kg) consuming diets containing 32-40% crude protein, 20-25% crude fat, and 13-28% crude fiber (DM basis). Daily DM intakes ranged from ∼40 to 70 g per animal, with digestible energy intake 51.5-87.5 kcal /kg BW0.75/day; pangolins consumed 9.4-15.2 g DM/kg BW0.75/day. Dietary energy data support observations of low metabolism and maintenance requirements for this species, similar to values reported for other myrmecophageous species. Addition of 5% ground chitin to diets improved fecal consistency, and decreased digestibility of DM, protein, and energy; addition of chitosan (chitin treated with NaOH) resulted in diet rejection. Recently, membrane reactor technology was used to produce high-quality biodiesel because of its advantage of simultaneous transesterification and separation. As the transesterification reaction involves two immiscible phases of methanol ( MeOH) and oil ( TG), a thorough investigation on the membrane reactor for biodiesel production with the consideration of chemical phase equilibrium ( CPE) via modeling analysis, was conducted in this study. A mathematical model was developed based on the modified Maxwell- Stefan model with the incorporation of CPE. The formation of TG rich micelles dispersed in the continuous phase of MeOH was the most important hypothesis in the model development. The preliminary experiment results show that the permeate compositions from the membrane reactor were closely related to CPE of the system, which was highly depending on the MeOH to TG molar ratio. TG free permeate can only be obtained if the continuous phase of MeOH was free from TG and the TG rich micelles were retained by the membrane. Background Coffee consumption has been shown to be inversely associated to type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), but evidence in Chinese populations is limited. We investigated the relationship between coffee consumption and T2DM in a population-based cohort of middle-aged Chinese. Materials and methods We studied 2332 subjects who participated in the Taichung Community Health Study in Taiwan in 2004. The relationships between coffee consumption, T2DM and fasting glucose were assessed. Results The prevalence of T2DM was 14∙0% and 10∙4% in men and women. After adjustment for age, body mass index, blood pressure, smoking, alcohol drinking, betel nut chewing, physical activity, income, education level, fat%, protein%, carbohydrate% and magnesium, coffee intake was inversely associated with T2DM. Habitual coffee drinkers had 38-46% lower risk of T2DM than nondrinkers. Compared to nondrinkers, the adjusted odds ratios (ORs) for T2DM according to subjects with habitual coffee consumption (< 1, 1-6, ⩾ 7 times per week) were 0∙77 (0∙52-1∙13), 0∙46 (0∙28-0∙76) and 0∙37 (0∙16- ∙83), respectively. The decreasing ORs indicate a dose-response effect of coffee consumption on the likelihood of having T2DM (P < 0∙001). A similar relationship was also evident in newly diagnosed T2DM (P < 0∙05). The adjusted mean fasting glucose levels gradually decreased as the frequency of coffee consumption increased (P < 0∙05). Conclusions Coffee intake is inversely associated with T2DM in Chinese. Background: Hyperkalaemia has been reported with high-dose trimethoprim (20 mg/kg/day) and standard-dose trimethoprim (6 mg/kg/day) plus sulfamethoxazole use. Aim: To investigate changes in plasma potassium concentrations in patients prescribed standard-dose trimethoprim 300 mg daily for urinary tract infections. Method: A retrospective cohort study of hospital patients with urinary tract infections treated with trimethoprim or other antibacterials (control group) for more than 5 days. Plasma potassium concentration, creatinine and urea were compared at baseline and at the completion of treatment. Results: There were 31 patients in the trimethoprim group and 65 patients in the control group. End-of-therapy mean plasma potassium concentrations increased significantly from baseline in the trimethoprim group (4.2 ± 0.4 mmol/L to 4.5 ± 0.5 mmol/L; p = 0.002) but not in the control group. End-of- therapy mean plasma potassium concentrations were also higher in the trimethoprim group (4.5 ± 0.5 mmol/L vs 4.2 ± 0.5 mmol/L; p = 0.007). 65% of the trimethoprim group developed end-of-therapy hyperkalaemia versus 39% of the control group. Mean creatinine concentration in the trimethoprim group increased by an average of 21% from baseline but did not change in the control group. The trimethoprim group showed no change in mean urea concentration but a decrease was noted in the control group. Conclusion: Treating urinary tract infections with trimethoprim 300 mg daily for more than 5 days was associated with an increase in plasma potassium concentration. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The objective of this study was to establish a history of feeding and dietary husbandry of pangolin in captivity. Over the past 150 years, several zoos have attempted to maintain pangolins ( Manis spp). Most of these zoos have not succeeded in maintaining these animals for long periods, associated largely with dietary problems. This study reviews the historic records of captive pangolins. Studies have revealed that losses of chromosome 4q24–25 regions are frequent in cancers including head and neck squamous cell carcinoma. Our previous comparative genomic hybridization analysis showed extensive losses of chromosome arm 4q in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC).To be more precise in mapping the potential regions of allelic losses and to understand the microsatellite instability (MSI) on 4q involving in oral pathogenesis, we performed allelotypings using eight polymorphic markers. Microsatellite analyses were first performed on 100 randomly selected controls to confirm the high informative rates of markers. Twenty OSCC tissues were microdissected from surgical specimens for microsatellite alterations (MA) analysis.MA was observed in 95% OSCC cases. The most eminently altered locus was 4q13.1 (75%), followed by 4q22.2 and 4q32.1 (55%). Allelic losses also occurred most frequently on these loci. Thirty-five percent cases had MA spanning 4q13.1 to 4q21.1. MSI occurred in 35% OSCC, at a lesser extent compared with allelic losses. The most common locus for MSI was 4q21.2 (20%). In addition, 4q MSI was significantly associated with the lymph node metastasis of OSCC (P = 0.01). Background Objective Methods Results Conclusion Fifty years since its inception, Light's criteria have aided in classifying pleural effusions (PEs) as exudates if 1 or more criteria are met. Thoracic ultrasound (US) emerges as a non‐invasive technique for point of care use especially if pleural procedures are contemplated.We aimed to develop a score based on radiological and US features that could separate exudates from transudates without serum and pleural fluid biochemical tests necessary for Light's criteria.A prospective review of consecutive patients with PE who underwent thoracocentesis was performed. CXRs were evaluated for laterality followed by US for echogenicity, pleural nodularity, thickening and septations. PE was classified as exudate or transudate according to Light's criteria and corroborated with albumin gradient. A score combining radiological and US features was developed.We recruited 201 patients with PE requiring thoracocentesis. Mean age was 64 years, 51% were females, 164 (81.6%) were exudates, and 37 (18.4%) were transudates. Assigning 1‐point for Diaphragmatic nodularity, Unilateral, Echogenicity, Pleural Thickening and Septations, DUETS ranged from 1 to 5. DUETS ≥2 indicated high likelihood for exudate (PPV 98.8%, NPV 100%) with 1% misclassification versus 6.9% using Light's criteria (p < 0.001).DUETS separated exudates from transudates with good accuracy, and could obviate paired serum and pleural fluid tests necessary for Light's criteria computation. Our study reflected real world practice where DUETS performed better than Light's criteria for PE that arose from more than one disease processes, and in the evaluation of patients with PE who have received diuretics.
