Background: Studies examining changes in skeletal muscle and adipose tissue during treatment for cancer in children, adolescents, and young adults and their effect on the risk of chemotherapy toxicity (chemotoxicity) are limited. Methods: Among 78 patients with lymphoma (79.5%) and rhabdomyosarcoma (20.5%), changes were measured in skeletal muscle (skeletal muscle index [SMI]; skeletal muscle density [SMD]) and adipose tissue (height‐adjusted total adipose tissue [hTAT]) between baseline and first subsequent computed tomography scans at the third lumbar vertebral level by using commercially available software. Body mass index (BMI; operationalized as a percentile [BMI%ile]) and body surface area (BSA) were examined at each time point. The association of changes in body composition with chemotoxicities was examined by using linear regression. Results: The median age at cancer diagnosis of this cohort (62.8% male; 55.1% non‐Hispanic White) was 12.7 years (2.5–21.1 years). The median time between scans was 48 days (range, 8–207 days). By adjusting for demographics and disease characteristics, this study found that patients undergo a significant decline in SMD (β ± standard error [SE] = −4.1 ± 1.4; p <.01). No significant changes in SMI (β ± SE = −0.5 ± 1.0; p =.7), hTAT (β ± SE = 5.5 ± 3.9; p =.2), BMI% (β ± SE = 4.1 ± 4.8; p =.3), or BSA (β ± SE = −0.02 ± 0.01; p =.3) were observed. Decline in SMD (per Hounsfield unit) was associated with a greater proportion of chemotherapy cycles with grade ≥3 nonhematologic toxicity (β ± SE = 1.09 ± 0.51; p =.04). Conclusions: This study shows that children, adolescents, and young adults with lymphoma and rhabdomyosarcoma undergo a decline in SMD early during treatment, which is associated with a risk of chemotoxicities. Future studies should focus on interventions designed at preventing the loss of muscle during treatment. Background: No adequate data exist on the impact of multiple myeloma (MM) with extramedullary disease (EMD) after autograft and maintenance therapy. Methods: We identified 808 patients with newly diagnosed MM who received first autograft, of whom 107 had EMD (83 paraskeletal and 24 organ involvement), and who had been reported to the EBMT registry December 2018. Distribution according to type of involvement was similar between the treatment groups (p =.69). For EMD, 46 (40%) received thalidomide, 59 (51%) lenalidomide, and 11 (10%) bortezomib. Results: The median follow‐up from maintenance start was 44 months. Three‐year progression‐free survival (PFS) was 52% (48%–57%) for no EMD, 56% (44%–69%) for paraskeletal involvement, and 45% (22%–68%) for organ involvement (p =.146). Early PFS (within first year) appeared to be significantly worse for organ involvement (hazard ratio, 3.40), while no significant influence was found after first year from maintenance start. Three‐year overall survival (OS) was 81% (77%–84%), 88% (80%–96%), and 68% (47%–89%; p =.064), respectively. With thalidomide as reference, lenalidomide was significantly associated with better PFS and OS, whereas bortezomib appeared to improve outcome specifically in EMD. Conclusion: Lenalidomide maintenance is standard of care for MM without EMD, whereas extramedullary organ involvement remains a significant risk factor for worse outcome, especially for early events after maintenance start. Purpose: Online Adaptive Radiation Therapy (oART) follows a different treatment paradigm than conventional radiotherapy, and because of this, the resources, implementation, and workflows needed are unique. The purpose of this report is to outline our institution's experience establishing, organizing, and implementing an oART program using the Ethos therapy system. Methods: We include resources used, operational models utilized, program creation timelines, and our institutional experiences with the implementation and operation of an oART program. Additionally, we provide a detailed summary of our first year's clinical experience where we delivered over 1000 daily adaptive fractions. For all treatments, the different stages of online adaption, primary patient set‐up, initial kV‐CBCT acquisition, contouring review and edit of influencer structures, target review and edits, plan evaluation and selection, Mobius3D 2nd check and adaptive QA, 2nd kV‐CBCT for positional verification, treatment delivery, and patient leaving the room, were analyzed. Results: We retrospectively analyzed data from 97 patients treated from August 2021–August 2022. One thousand six hundred seventy seven individual fractions were treated and analyzed, 632(38%) were non‐adaptive and 1045(62%) were adaptive. Seventy four of the 97 patients (76%) were treated with standard fractionation and 23 (24%) received stereotactic treatments. For the adaptive treatments, the generated adaptive plan was selected in 92% of treatments. On average(±std), adaptive sessions took 34.52 ± 11.42 min from start to finish. The entire adaptive process (from start of contour generation to verification CBCT), performed by the physicist (and physician on select days), was 19.84 ± 8.21 min. Conclusion: We present our institution's experience commissioning an oART program using the Ethos therapy system. It took us 12 months from project inception to the treatment of our first patient and 12 months to treat 1000 adaptive fractions. Retrospective analysis of delivered fractions showed that the average overall treatment time was approximately 35 min and the average time for the adaptive component of treatment was approximately 20 min. The IUBMB enzyme classification system, available at the IUBMB ExplorEnz website, uses a four‐component number (the EC number) that identifies an enzyme in terms of reaction catalysed. There were originally six recognized groups of enzymes: Oxidoreductases (EC 1), Transferases (EC 2), Hydrolases (EC 3), Lyases (EC 4), Isomerases (EC 5) and Ligases (EC 6). Of these, the lyases, which are defined as 'enzymes that cleave C‐C, C‐O, C‐N and other bonds by means other than by hydrolysis or oxidation', present particular recognition and classification problems. Recently, a new class, the Translocases (EC 7), has been added, which incorporates enzymes that catalyse the movement of ions or molecules across membranes or their separation within membranes. A new subclass of the isomerases has also been included for those enzymes that alter the conformations of proteins and nucleic acids. Newly reported enzymes are being regularly added to the list after validation and where new information affects the classification of an existing entry, a new EC number is created, but the old one is not reused. Purpose: To validate the association between body composition and mortality in men treated with radiation for localized prostate cancer (PCa). Secondarily, to integrate body composition as a factor to classify patients by risk of all‐cause mortality. Materials and Methods: Participants of NRG/Radiation Therapy Oncology Group (RTOG) 9406 and NRG/RTOG 0126 with archived computed tomography were included. Muscle mass and muscle density were estimated by measuring the area and attenuation of the psoas muscles on a single slice at L4–L5. Bone density was estimated by measuring the attenuation of the vertebral body at mid‐L5. Survival analyses, including Cox proportional hazards models, assessed the relationship between body composition and mortality. Recursive partitioning analysis (RPA) was used to create a classification tree to classify participants by risk of death. Results: Data from 2066 men were included in this study. In the final multivariable model, psoas area, comorbidity score, baseline prostate serum antigen, and age were significantly associated with survival. The RPA yielded a classification tree with four prognostic groups determined by age, comorbidity, and psoas area. Notably, the classification among older (≥70 years) men into prognostic groups was determined by psoas area. Conclusions: This study strongly supports that body composition is related to mortality in men with localized PCa. The inclusion of psoas area in the RPA classification tree suggests that body composition provides additive information to age and comorbidity status for mortality prediction, particularly among older men. More research is needed to determine the clinical impact of body composition on prognostic models in men with PCa. Intensified livestock production is considered as a promising pathway for smallholder farmers. Nevertheless, this pathway may entail prohibitive investment requirements of labour, capital or trade‐offs at farm level that preclude sustainable intensification. We used fuzzy cognitive mapping (FCM) to assess farmers' perceptions of changes in the farm household system resulting from adding livestock to their mixed farms. Farmers identified trade‐offs between the increased income and farmyard manure production versus increases in labour requirements for fodder imports. Furthermore, a sensitivity analysis performed on the FCMs showed that an increase in milk market demand could have strong positive effects on livestock production and income. We conclude that FCM is a good tool to rapidly identify trade‐offs and analyse perceptions of farmers which revealed that although they consider intensification a promising strategy, the perceived deepening of labour constraints and increasing dependency on fodder import makes a concurrent (sustainable) intensification of these farm systems unlikely. Globally crop production is impaired by soil salinity and sodicity and to maintain the sustainability of the production systems under such degraded lands, conservation agriculture (CA) may be an alternative in arid and semiarid regions. An experiment was initiated with different agri‐food systems with CA‐based practices to understand the reclamation potential of sodic soil after continuous cultivation for 4 and 9 years. This included: (i) conventional tillage (CT)‐based rice‐wheat system (Sc1); (ii) partial CA with puddled rice‐zero tillage (ZT) wheat and mungbean (Sc2); (iii) ZT rice‐wheat‐mungbean (Sc3); (iv) ZT maize‐wheat‐mungbean (Sc4). Soil samples were collected from 0 to 15 and 15 to 30‐cm depth after 4 and 9 years of wheat harvesting. Results showed an 18% decline in pH2 with Sc2 and ~30% decline in EC2 with Sc2 and Sc3 at upper soil depth after 9 years. Higher cation exchange capacity by 35% and 89% in Sc2 and 38% and 58% in Sc3 after 4 and 9 years was found, respectively, over initial levels. A decrease in exchangeable sodium percentage was recorded in Sc2 by 43% and 50%, after 4 and 9 years over the initial level, respectively. The oxidizable carbon and total organic carbon were increased by ~76%, 69%, and 64% in Sc4, Sc3, and Sc2, respectively, over initial values at 0–15 cm soil depth. Results showed that the CA‐based rice‐wheat‐mungbean system had more reclamation potential than other studied systems. Therefore, long‐term CA practices involving ZT with crop residue recycling and efficient crop rotations have the potential to reduce the sodicity stress and improve soil organic carbon thereby bringing the sodic lands under productive crop cultivation. Objectives: Head and neck cancer (HNC) patients are at high risk for late occurring radiation‐related morbidity and recurrence, necessitating close long‐term medical surveillance. This study identified factors associated with becoming lost to follow‐up (LTFU) at a comprehensive cancer center. Materials and Methods: Patients were drawn from survivors who received radiation for HNC at a single institution between 2001 and 2018. LTFU was defined as living patients without a clinical encounter within 2 years of the data query. Results: In total, 537 patients met the inclusion criteria and 57 (10.6%) were identified as LTFU. Individual comparisons identified time since completing radiation, non‐White race and being unmarried as associated with LTFU. Multiple regression identified time since treatment and being unmarried as factors associated with LTFU. A decision tree correctly sorted 89.4% using time, distance, and marital status. Background: Body composition is associated with chemotherapy toxicity (chemotoxicity) in adults with cancer; this association remains unexplored in children with cancer. Methods: Using baseline computed tomography scans of 107 children with Hodgkin lymphoma (n = 45), non‐Hodgkin lymphoma (n = 42), or rhabdomyosarcoma (n = 20), this study examined body composition (skeletal muscle index [SMI], skeletal muscle density [SMD], and height‐adjusted total adipose tissue [hTAT]) to determine its association with chemotoxicity. Clinical characteristics and chemotoxicities were abstracted from medical records. Primary outcomes included grade 4 or higher hematologic toxicities and grade 3 or higher nonhematologic toxicities within 6 months of the diagnosis. Logistic regression models accounting for repeated measures were constructed to examine the association between body composition indices and chemotoxicities; adjustments were made for age at diagnosis, sex, race/ethnicity, cancer type, risk group, body mass index (measured as a percentile), or body surface area. Results: The median SMI was 41.0 cm2/m2 (range, 25.8‐68.6 cm2/m2), the median SMD was 54.1 HU (range, 35‐69.4 HU), and the median hTAT was 19.5 cm2/m2 (range, 0‐226.7 cm2/m2). Grade 4 or higher hematologic toxicities and grade 3 or higher nonhematologic toxicities were observed in 74.7% and 66.3% of the chemotherapy cycles, respectively. A higher SMD at diagnosis was associated with lower odds of grade 4 or higher hematologic toxicity (odds ratio [OR], 0.90; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.85‐0.97; P =.004). SMI (OR, 0.99; 95% CI, 0.95‐1.04; P =.7) and hTAT (OR, 1.00; 95% CI, 0.99‐1.01; P =.9) were not associated with hematologic toxicities. Nonhematologic toxicities did not show any association with body composition. Conclusions: The association between low SMD and hematologic toxicities in children with lymphoma or rhabdomyosarcoma could be due to body composition–based biodistribution of chemotherapeutic agents and needs further investigation. Lay Summary: Body composition at cancer diagnosis in children with lymphoma and rhabdomyosarcoma may provide information that could identify those at risk for serious side effects from chemotherapy.Routinely used measures such as body mass index and body surface area show poor correlations with body composition assessed via computed tomography scans. Zero tillage (ZT) is widely promoted throughout India's Eastern Indo‐Gangetic Plains (IGP) because of its potential to increase wheat productivity and resilience to abiotic stresses. Weeds remain a major barrier to ZT adoption, yet it remains unclear how ZT will influence weed communities in the Eastern‐IGP. The primary objective of this study was to characterise the composition of the germinable weed seedbank sampled just prior to the wheat phase of rice–wheat farms in Bihar and Eastern Uttar Pradesh, and examine whether adoption of ZT wheat has shifted weed community composition compared to conventional tillage (CT). Additionally, we examined whether edaphic properties and topography (upland vs. lowland) explain variation in germinable weed seedbank communities. In December 2014, we evaluated the germinable seedbank from 72 fields differing in their historic (>=3 year) tillage practices (ZT vs. CT) in three regions: Samastipur–Vaishali–Muzaffarpur (SVM), Ara–Buxar and Maharajgunj–Kushinagar. Weed community composition and species richness varied by region and topography. ZT adoption was associated with lower relative density of Chenopodium album in the germinable seedbank and lower emergence of Phalaris minor seedlings within farmers' fields. In upland topographies of the SVM region, ZT adoption was also associated with greater relative abundance of Solanum nigrum in the weed seedbank. However, differences between tillage systems in individual species were not large enough to result in detection of differences at the whole‐community level. Variation in edaphic properties, most notably soil texture and pH, explained 51% of the variation in the weed seedbank community. Our work suggests several frequent but poorly understood species (e.g. Mazus pumilus and Grangea maderaspatana) in Eastern IGP for which future research should quantify their effects on crop yields. Deteriorating soil health, diminishing soil organic carbon (SOC), development of subsurface hard compact layer and declining system productivity are barriers to achieving sustainable production in the traditional rice–wheat cropping system (TA) in the eastern Indo‐Gangetic Plain of India. Conservation agriculture (CA), which favours minimum soil disturbance, crop residue retention and crop diversification could be a viable alternative to the TA to address most of those major problems. With that in mind, a long‐term experiment is being implemented at ICAR‐RCER, Patna, Bihar, India, with four treatments: (a) TA, (b) full CA (fCA) and (c and d) partial CA (pCA1 and pCA2), differing in crop establishment methods, cropping system and crop residue management in a randomized complete block design. Measurement of soil health parameters was carried out in the 11th year of the experiment. The results revealed a beneficial effect of CA and 46 and 40% increase in SOC concentration and stock, respectively, under fCA over TA in the 0–7.5‐cm soil layer. The effect of partial CA (pCA1 and pCA2) was variable, but an increasing trend was always observed under pCA compared to TA. There was an enrichment in SOC content of aggregates under CA irrespective of size class; however, no relation was found between SOC content and aggregate diameter. The contribution of macroaggregates to SOC stock was larger (36–66%) under CA in the 0–7.5‐cm soil layer. Adoption of CA improved the macroaggregate content, MWD and GMD of aggregates, and aggregation ratio. Soil macropore content was greater under fCA, whereas other parameters were similar among treatments. The impact of CA was mostly limited to 0–7.5 cm soil layer and a maximum up to 15 cm soil depth while evaluation until 60 cm soil depth was realized. The yield of rice in CA was comparable to or higher than in TA, whereas the system rice equivalent yield was always higher (38–53%) under CA than under the conventional practices. Therefore, a CA‐based cropping system must be encouraged, to increase SOC status, improve aggregation stability and, consequently, sustain or increase system productivity, in order to achieve food and nutritional security in the eastern Indo‐Gangetic Plain of India. In this study, nanofibers composed of Opuntia cochenillifera nopal mucilage (N) extract combined with chitosan (CH) and pullulan (PL) (N/CH/PL) were produced via Forcespinning®. The developed nonwoven composite membranes are composed of long, continuous and homogeneous fibers with average fiber diameter varying between 251 ± 77 nm and 406 ± 127 nm depending on the concentration of N. After crosslinking, the developed membranes were highly stable in water. The water absorption capacity of the N/CH/PL composite nanofiber membranes was shown to be 65% higher compared to CH/PL nanofiber membranes. Nopal dip‐coated membranes show inhibition of Gram‐negative Escherichia coli, indicating antibacterial properties. These findings suggest that the incorporation of naturally derived nopal extract into nanofiber systems could provide a natural alternative for dressings used in wound healing applications. © 2020 Society of Chemical Industry [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Adopting a better understanding of how both older adults and health care providers view the community management of frailty is necessary for improving home health, especially facing the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID‐19) pandemic. We conducted a qualitative focus group study to assess how both older adults and health care providers view frailty and virtual health care in home health. Methods: Two focus groups enrolled home‐living older adults and health care professionals, respectively (n = 15). Questions targeting the use of virtual / telehealth technologies in‐home care for frail older adults were administered at audio‐recorded group interviews. Transcribed discussions were coded and analyzed using NVivo software. Results: The older adult group emphasized the autonomy related to increasing frailty and social isolation and the need for transparent dissemination of health care planning. They were optimistic about remote technology‐based supports and suggested that telehealth / health‐monitoring/tracking were in high demand. Health care professionals emphasized the importance of a holistic biopsychosocial approach to frailty management. They highlighted the need for standardized early assessment and management of frailty. Conclusions: The integrated perspectives provided an updated understanding of what older adults and practitioners value in home‐living supports. The 'high speed' rotavator is used for shallow tillage to create a fine tilth and incorporate crop residues, often with a single tractor pass. Rotavator tillage has spread quickly in many parts of South Asia, despite short‐term experimental trials suggesting deteriorating soil quality and crop yield penalties. Evidence of rotavator impacts on farmer fields across soil gradients and time is largely absent. From a farm household survey conducted among wheat farmers in Nepal, we estimate wheat yield and profitability outcomes for rotavator adopters and non‐adopters using propensity score matching. We find that rotavator adoption leads to inferior outcomes, despite significant cost savings for land preparation (US$ 11–15 per hectare). With rotavator adoption, farmers lose about 284–309 kg of wheat grain and about US$ 93–101 of profits on average per hectare per season, and these penalties increase with longer‐term use of the technology. Adoption of rotavator appears to be driven by the cost and time savings for land preparation. Against this backdrop, new policy and extension efforts are required that discourage rotavator use and favour more sustainable tillage technologies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Rainfed maize (Zea mays L.)-wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) production in the midhill region of Nepal is limited in the winter season by cool temperatures, low rainfall, and low fertility. Here, we use the Decision Support System for Agricultural Transfer Cropping System Model (DSSAT-CSM) to simulate potential productivity for conservation agriculture (CA) and conventional practice (CP), contrasting N application rates, and wheat planting dates ranging from 1 September to 15 December under six different weather scenarios in the midhills of Nepal. Total maize plus wheat aboveground biomass increased up to 56% with longer vs. shorter duration maize varieties, but the subsequent dry-season wheat failed 71% of the time after late-planted, long-season maize in areas where mean seasonal temperature was below 14°C. The optimal wheat planting date increased from August to December as seasonal rainfall amount increased. Increasing N application rate in wheat from 50 to 150 kg ha-1 resulted in significant yield and net profit gains for all weather scenarios given current grain and fertilizer prices in the midhills, especially where conditions were cool and rainfall exceeded 400 mm. Principal component analysis of soil and climate parameters indicated that CA benefits most from higher N application rates when conditions are cool and wet due to increased residue retention coupled with slow soil organic matter decomposition. Conservation agriculture (CA) is a management system characterized by zero or minimum tillage, permanent soil cover with crop residue or plant growth, and crop rotation. This study investigated the impact of conservation tillage, crop type, and planting date on crop productivity and the soil physical properties for 2 yr following conversion to CA. After 2 yr, average mean weight diameter of dry aggregates for the 0- to 5-cm and 5- to 10-cm soil depths were 45 and 24% greater in the CA treatment than the conventional practice (CP) treatment, respectively. However, soil sorptivity was about three times slower in CA than in CP for rapeseed (Brassica napus L. toria) rotation treatments, but only 62% slower in CA than CP for wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) rotation treatments. Soil bulk density to a depth of 15 cm was greater in CA (1.30 g cm-3) than CP (1.24 g cm-3), but only for late-planted treatments. Maize (Zea mays L.) yields for CA were not different from CP in the first year, but were 1.4 Mg ha-1 for CA and 5.0 Mg ha-1 for CP in the second year due to poor stand establishment under CA. There were no effects of CA on dry-season rapeseed and wheat. Results suggest that during the transition of CP to CA, soil physical properties can be improved but yields may remain constant or decline. Purpose: To assess the long‐term stability of the anchored radiofrequency transponders and compare displacement rates with other commercially available lung fiducial markers. We also sought to describe late toxicity attributable to fiducial implantation or migration. Materials and methods: The transponder cohort was comprised of 17 patients at our institution who enrolled in a multisite prospective clinical trial and underwent bronchoscopic implantation of three anchored transponders into small (2–2.5 mm) airways. We generated a comparison cohort of 34 patients by selecting patients from our institutional lung SBRT database and matching 2:1 based on the lobe containing tumor and proximity to the bronchial tree. Assessment of migration was performed by rigidly registering the most recent follow‐up CT scan to the simulation scan, and assessing whether the relative geometry of the fiducial markers had changed by more than 5 mm. Toxicity outcomes of interest were hemoptysis and pneumothorax. Results: The median follow‐up of patients in the transponder cohort was 25.3 months and the median follow‐up in the comparison cohort was 21.7 months. When assessing the most recent CT, all fiducial markers were within 5 mm of their position at CT simulation in 11 (65%) patients in the transponder group as compared to 23 (68%) in the comparison group (P = 0.28). One case of hemoptysis was identified in the transponder cohort, and bronchoscopy confirmed bleeding from recurrent tumor; no cases of hemoptysis were noted in the comparison cohort. No case of pneumothorax was noted in either group. Conclusion: No significant difference in the rates of fiducial marker retention and migration were noted when comparing patients who had anchored transponders placed into small airways and a 2:1 matched cohort of patients who had other commercially available lung fiducial markers placed. Abstract: Cognitive decline with aging and dementia is especially poignant with regard to the executive functioning that is necessary for activities of daily independent living. The relationship between age‐related neurodegeneration in the prefrontal cortex and executive functioning has been uniquely investigated using task‐phase functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to detect brain activity in response to stimuli; however, a comprehensive list of task designs that have been implemented to task‐phase fMRI is absent in the literature. The purpose of this review was to recognize what methods have been used to study executive functions with aging and dementia in fMRI tasks, and to describe and categorize them. The following cognitive subdomains were emphasized: cognitive flexibility, planning and decision‐making, working memory, cognitive control/inhibition, semantic processing, attention and concentration, emotional functioning, and multitasking. Over 30 different task‐phase fMRI designs were found to have been implemented in the literature, all adopted from standard neuropsychological assessments. Cognitive set‐shifting and decision‐making tasks were particularly well studied in regard to age‐related neurodegeneration, while emotional functioning and multitasking designs were found to be the least utilized. Summarizing the information on which tasks have shown the greatest usability will assist in the future design and implementation of effective fMRI experiments targeting executive functioning. X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) is a widely used surface analysis technique employed in fundamental research, applied research, service laboratories, and industry. Good‐quality analytical outcomes depend critically on spectral references. Many examples of XPS reference databases exist, including print editions, sets of spectral peak positions drawn from the literature, and digital archives and libraries. We report the development of a new digital XPS database comprising survey spectra and region spectra for a range of materials types, collected under a common set of analytical conditions. Each material is described using spectra collected at multiple pass energies with all photoelectron and X‐ray induced Auger transitions represented. Detailed metadata are provided for each material and each spectrum, presented using a schema that incorporates the ISO 16243 and 14976 standards and extensions developed in this work. Spectra are shared under a Creative Commons International (4.0) attribution, non‐commercial licence (CC BY‐NC) in Kratos (.dset), VAMAS (.vms), and XML (.xml) formats. It is intended that reference spectra be imported directly into XPS data analysis software packages for reference and comparison purposes, matching either the peak or transition of interest and the instrument pass energy. Background: Contextual processing (or context processing; CP) is an integral component of cognition. Contextual processing allows people to manage their thoughts and actions by adjusting to surroundings. The process involves the formation of internal representations of context in relation to the environment, maintenance of information over a period of time, and the updating of mental representations to reflect environmental changes. Each of these functions can be affected by aging and associated brain conditions. Here, we update the current research investigating the impact of aging and neurodegeneration on CP. Method: Through searching the PubMed, PsycINFO, and Google Scholar databases, 18 studies that focused on aging, mild cognitive impairment (MCI), Alzheimer's disease (AD), and Parkinson's disease (PD) impacts on CP were retrieved and reviewed in detail. Result: Older adults of normal aging had a delayed onset and reduced amplitude of electrophysiological response to information detection, comparison, and execution. MCI patients demonstrated clear signs of impaired CP compared to normal aging. The only study reporting CP in AD suggested a decreased proactive control in maintaining contextual information, but seemingly intact reactive control. On the other hand, PD without dementia showed limited ability to use contextual information in cognitive and motor processes, exhibiting impaired reactive control. Conclusion: Data suggest that accelerated aging and neurodegeneration can further impact the changes in CP with age, providing insights for improving intervention strategies. Since the publication of a list of enzymes classified according to the reactions that they catalysed, by Dixon and Webb in 1958, its content and presentation have undergone a number of significant changes. These have been necessitated by new information, as well as the need to improve clarity. The move from printed versions to the online environment, through the Explor Enz website, has allowed the process of adding newly reported enzymes to be automated and the information content to be enriched. Search and output facilities have also been enhanced. Question: Is soil hydrology an important niche-based driver of biodiversity in tropical forests? More specifically, we asked whether seasonal dynamics in soil water regime contributed to vegetation partitioning into distinct forest types. Location: Tropical rain forest in northwestern Mato Grosso, Brazil. Methods: We investigated the distribution of trees and lianas ≥ 1 cm DBH in ten transects that crossed distinct hydrological transitions. Soil water content and depth to water table were measured regularly over a 13-month period. Results: A detrended correspondence analysis (DCA) of 20 dominant species and structural attributes in 10 × 10 m subplots segregated three major forest types: (1) high-statured upland forest with intermediate stem density, (2) medium-statured forest dominated by palms, and (3) low-statured campinarana forest with high stem density. During the rainy season and transition into the dry season, distinct characteristics of the soil water regime (i.e. hydro-indicators) were closely associated with each vegetation community. Stand structural attributes and hydro-indicators were statistically different among forest types. Conclusions: Some upland species appeared intolerant of anaerobic conditions as they were not present in palm and campinarana sites, which experienced prolonged periods of sturation at the soil surface. A shallow impermeable layer restricted rooting depth in the campinarana community, which could heighten drought stress during the dry season. The only vegetation able to persist in campinarana sites were short-statured trees that appear to be well-adapted to the dual extremes of inundation and drought. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We prospectively studied presentation biological differences and the response to therapy in patients with thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP) associated with, or unrelated to human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. TTP patients underwent standard evaluations and were treated with prednisone 1 mg/kg in addition to infusions of fresh frozen plasma (FFP; 30 ml/kg/d) until normalization of the platelet count. Unresponsive patients were referred for plasma exchange. Compared with HIV− TTP patients (n = 23), in HIV+ subjects (n = 21) microangiopathy was dominant among Black females, who had lower presentation Hb (median 5·8 g/dl;P = 0·03), platelet count (13 × 109/l;P = 0·05) and a CD4 count of 0·096 × 109/l. HIV+ individuals responded to FFP faster than HIV− patients and none of them required apheresis. Ten HIV− TTP patients required apheresis (P = 0·03) and four died. Responses in the HIV+ and HIV− groups occurred after treatment with a median of 33 and 55 units (one unit = 320 ml) of FFP (P = 0·004) respectively. Response to this protocol was seen in 84% (95% response in HIV+ patients). Regression analysis showed that survival was associated with younger age (P = 0·001), rapid platelet (P = 0·001) and Hb (P = 0·0009) recovery, and fewer FFP units to normal lactate dehydrogenase levels (P = 0·006). We conclude that in HIV+ individuals, microangiopathy is highly responsive to plasma infusions. This observation is important particularly when apheresis is not available. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Stabilising Asia-Pacific exchange rates by establishing a system of pegs, bands or target zones around the Japanese yen requires the compromise of domestic policy autonomy. The cost of doing so is least when members reaction to economic shocks are symmetric. This study considers which currencies meet this necessary precondition. To assess regional disturbance symmetry the Blanchard and Quah (1989) procedure is employed to distinguish temporary from permanent shocks for paired aggregate output and price time-series. Disturbance correlations between Japan and other Asia-Pacific nations are calculated. Nucleolar organizer regions (NORs) are loops of ribosomal DNA (rDNA) in the nucleolus and are associated with acidic proteins. They are seen in routinely processed paraffin sections by suing a one-step colloidal silver (Ag) staining method; they appear as black dots termed "AgNORs". The quantitative assay of AgNORs has been used to differentiate benign from malignant neoplasms. Melanocytic lesions differ significantly in AgNOR counts between malignant melanoma and nevi. However, conflicting results have been reported as to AgNORs' prognostic value in melanoma. A recent study showed AgNOR counts to be a more accurate prognostic indicator than Breslow's thickness. In this study, we counted the AgNORs in 26 patients with primary cutaneous melanomas (CMM) between 2.0 mm and 2.5 thick. Of these, 14 are alive without disease (AN) at 5 years after diagnosis (group 1), and 12 are dead of disease (DD) in less than 5 years (group 2). The AgNORs were scored in 30 nuclei per tumor, and the means were calculated. For group 1, the mean number of AgNORs per nucleus was 6.88, ranging from 3.73 to 12.70. For group 2, the mean number was 6.97, ranging from 3.63 to 11.67. Statistical analysis using analysis of variance (ANOVA) showed no significant difference between the groups (p = 0.33).
