This study confirmed that observations of blue-green colouration in plasma fractions of the ballan wrasse Labrus bergylta were caused by the linear tetra-pyrrole biliverdin and that the molecule was of the physiologically relevant IX α isomer. Accumulation appears driven by chromogenic association with an unknown protein moiety which precludes enzymatic reduction and would suggest active management. It was demonstrated that the pigment did not fluctuate relative to ontogeny, or indeed binary gender in the species of interest, but mobilisation and depletion in the subset of individuals undergoing sex change at the time of study supports a potential association with gender inversion processes. It is of note that although biliverdin does have some effect on external colouration, the evidence is indicative that crypsis is a supplementary function thus other factors must be considered. The adhesion of a spray droplet upon initial contact with a leaf surface is extremely important to spray efficacy and is dependent on dynamic interactions between droplets (formulation, size, velocity) and leaf (micro-topography, surface chemistry, veininess, hairiness and orientation). A 'universal' spray droplet adhesion model has previously been developed, using 50% aqueous acetone contact angles as a measure of leaf surface properties; this model satisfactorily predicts initial adhesion over a range of formulation surface tensions, droplet sizes and velocities. However, it failed to fit data from hairier leaves. This study investigates initial spray droplet adhesion on hairy leaves. Two categories of hairy leaves were identified by how the droplets penetrate the leaf hairs, Wenzel (hairy) and Cassie- Baxter (super hairy). For the Wenzel-type, a simple constant accounted for the increased droplet shatter caused by the hairs. For the Cassie- Baxter-type, a cushioning factor was introduced to account for the absorption of kinetic energy at impact by the hair mat. The cushioning factor was estimated by measuring the relative height of the hair mat. By including these two parameters, the new model successfully predicted the mean adhesion of non-hairy, hairy and super-hairy plants ( R2 = 0.96). This model and the underlying principles determining hairy leaf adhesion developed in this article will help develop spray formulations effective at targeting hairy-leaved weed and crop species. Erythrocyte-specific bisphosphoglycerate mutase is a trifunctional enzyme which modulates the levels of 2,3-bisphosphoglycerate (2,3-BPG) in red blood cells by virtue of its synthase and phosphatase activities. Low levels of erythrocyte 2,3-BPG increase the affinity of haemoglobin for oxygen, thus limiting the release of oxygen into tissues. 2,3-BPG levels in stored blood decline rapidly owing to the phosphatase activity of bisphosphoglycerate mutase, which is enhanced by a fall in pH. Here, the 1.94 Å resolution X-ray structure of bisphosphoglycerate mutase is presented, focusing on the dynamic nature of key ligand-binding residues and their interaction with the inhibitor citrate. Residues at the binding pocket are complete. In addition, the movement of key residues in the presence and absence of ligand is described and alternative conformations are explored. The conformation in which the ligand citrate would bind at the substrate-binding pocket is proposed, with discussion and representations of its orientation. The characterization of bisphosphoglycerate mutase-citrate interactions will provide a framework for the design of specific inhibitors of the phosphatase activity of this enzyme, which may limit the decline of 2,3-BPG in stored blood. The article cites a study on rapid simultaneous measurement of multiple cytokines in childhood oncology patients with febrile neutropenia. Findings revealed that there was a significant increase in interleukin (IL)-5 levels in the culture-positive group compared with the culture-negative group. There was a significant increase in IL-8 in the remaining four of eight culture-positive patients compared with the culture-negative group. There was no correlation between the culture-positive group and CRP levels or hematological parameters.
