Objective: Further investigate the application of self‐determination theory (SDT) to experiences of solitude by examining the effects of recalling intrinsic versus non‐intrinsic memories. Background: SDT research indicates that recalling memories associated with intrinsic goals (e.g., personal growth, relationships, altruism) enhances present moment wellness by satisfying basic psychological needs. Method: Two studies were conducted with American adults. Study 1 included 465 participants (age = 49.49 [SD = 19.01], 49.46% female) and Study 2 comprised 490 participants (age = 54.16 [SD = 18.89], 51.84% female). Both studies assessed the impact of recalling intrinsic versus non‐intrinsic memories prior to a five‐minute solitude session. Results: Study 1 found intrinsic memories were linked to more basic psychological need satisfaction than non‐intrinsic memories, but both memory types resulted in similar wellness improvements. Contrary to expectations, Study 2 revealed extrinsic memories (e.g., wealth, fame, image) led to the highest basic psychological need satisfaction and least need frustration compared to intrinsic and neutral memories, with all memory conditions showing similar wellness gains. Conclusions: Solitude appears beneficial regardless of memory content. While different memories vary in need satisfying quality, this does not seem to impact the benefits of solitude. Key points In this study we have used a highly immersive virtual reality (VR) cycling environment where incongruence between virtual hill gradient (created by visual gradient and bike tilt angle) and actual workload (pedalling resistance) can experimentally manipulate perception of exercise effort. This therefore may provide a method to examine the role of effort perception in cardiorespiratory control during exercise. Twelve healthy untrained participants (7 men, age 26 ± 5 years) were studied during five visits. On visit 1 participants underwent cardiopulmonary exercise testing, and during subsequent visits (2–4) participants performed repeated hill climbs at different gradients (of 3%, 6% and 9% in counterbalanced order) with the actual workload ‘congruent’ with virtual hill gradient. On visit 5 participants completed three incongruent trials with virtual hill gradients of 3%, 6% and 9% but a fixed workload equal to that for the 6% climb (iVR3%, iVR6% and iVR9% trials). Despite no difference in power output, there was a significantly elevated rating of perceived exertion (RPE) and mean arterial blood pressure in iVR9% compared to iVR3% and iVR6%, although this effect decayed over time. There was no effect on any respiratory variable, and no significant reduction in RPE or cardiovascular responses was observed during the iVR3% trial. These data suggest that perception of effort and cardiovascular responses to exercise can be manipulated experimentally via virtual hill gradient (using visual and/or vestibular cues) in a VR environment. This work supports those previously showing the existence of a control mechanism which integrates perception of effort and the cardiovascular response to exercise in humans. In this study, we leverage 25 years of observations from spaceborne radars, along with coincident reanalysis data, to determine how the depth and width of precipitating convective storms are related to the large‐scale environments in which they are observed. We find that the deepest convective features are observed in environments markedly different from the environments of other convective features, including organized convection. Deep storms co‐occur with relatively dry, unstable conditions, while wide storms are observed in moist, relatively stable environments. We identify eight large‐scale environmental variables that serve to distinguish between storm modes, and then show that principal component analysis can be used to condense this information into just two scalar variables. The methodology presented offers a succinct way to describe a storm's environment and will allow us to better relate a storm's initial environment to its dynamical characteristics. Plain Language Summary: Convective storms are important to understand because of the many ways in which they impact the atmosphere and life on Earth. Our study uses data from satellite missions to look at how large‐scale environmental factors relate to storm characteristics. We match radar observations of storm structures with environmental data like temperature, moisture, and winds. Using a statistical method called principal component analysis, we can then represent these complex environmental patterns in a simplified manner using two main variables. This helps us understand how different types of storms relate to their surroundings. We find that deep storms are often associated with relatively drier, warmer conditions, while wide storms are observed in moister, cooler environments. Using the analytical tools developed here, future research can use new satellite mission observations to better understand storm dynamics and intensity, and their relationship with the environment. Invasive alien species can have severe impacts on biodiversity, economies, and well‐being and their long‐term management can involve massive costs. There is an increasing policy imperative to determine whether the management of biological invasions is effective, particularly at biological invasion fronts, but this can often be difficult to determine without extensive data collection. Furthermore, risk assessment frameworks are often used to guide decision‐making and management, but these can be hampered by a lack of information about the extent and dynamics of a biological invasion following an introduction within a new region. Incorporating information on the dynamics of biological invasions into these frameworks could provide useful information for decision‐makers including a baseline for evaluating ongoing management approaches. Here, we outline a generalisable mechanistic species distribution modelling framework that is informed by patterns of spread observed in other invaded regions and can provide a relatively rapid assessment of the likely spatial and temporal dynamics of a biological invasion in the absence of interventions. To demonstrate this approach, we consider the effectiveness of rapid eradications carried out in four European countries to prevent the spread of the yellow‐legged hornet (Vespa velutina nigrithorax) following the implementation of Regulation (EU) 1143/2014 on invasive alien species. Synthesis and applications. By predicting the extent of a biological invasion in the absence of timely interventions and comparing this to the current distribution of the yellow‐legged hornet, we found that management measures implemented in these countries appear to have been effective in limiting the spread of the species in Europe. Additionally, the model framework may be useful to inform the identification of high‐risk areas for surveillance measures to be prioritised in view of rapid detection and early eradication activities. Glucagon‐like peptide‐1 receptor agonist (GLP‐1RA) medications have been shown to be effective in achieving optimal glucose control and reducing all‐cause death, cardiovascular death, nonfatal myocardial infarction, hospitalization for heart failure, and end‐stage kidney disease in individuals with type 1 (T1D) and type 2 diabetes (T2D). However, use of these medications has been associated with increased hypoglycaemia risk in patients treated with concomitant antihyperglycaemic medications. The risk is particularly high in patients with T1D due to their loss of glucagon counter‐regulatory response. This article reviews the effect of GLP‐1RA formulations on the development of hypoglycaemia in individuals with T1D and T2D treated with insulin therapy, discusses the benefits of continuous glucose monitoring with GLP‐1RA treatment, and presents strategies for safely initiating GLP‐1RA therapy in these individuals. A hybrid inorganic–organic neuromorphic sensor utilizing a thin film zinc oxide (ZnO) detector with organic neuromorphic pre‐processing is developed to quantify ammonia in aqueous environments, including biological analytes. Impedimetric ZnO sensor, connected to an organic somatic circuit, reliably and accurately detects changes in electrical impedance to measure and quantify variations in the concentration of ammonia. The sensing mechanism of the ZnO thin film sensor is hypothesized to be the cause of the decrease in resistance of a solution with an increase in ammonia concentration. It is found that the surface oxide of the ZnO layer reacts with even very low concentrations of ammonia (NH3$N{H}_{3}$), leading to changes in resistivity. This makes the sensor capable of detecting ammonia in a range of concentrations between 0.0001 and 0.1 M. A neuromorphic circuit converts the analog change of ammonia concentration expressed as a change of sensor impedance to the digitized frequency of spikes. Detecting such a low ammonia concentration is critical for environmental monitoring and medical diagnosis. The digitized nature of neuromorphic signal pre‐processing makes it more resilient for signal transmission in the presence of noise and serves as a demonstration of "smart sensing." Shared decision making (SDM) between health care professionals and patients is essential to help patients make well informed choices about lung cancer screening (LCS). Patients who participate in SDM have greater LCS knowledge, reduced decisional conflict, and improved adherence to annual screening compared with patients who do not participate in SDM. SDM tools are acceptable to patients and clinicians. The importance of SDM in LCS is emphasized in recommendations from professional organizations and highlighted as a priority in the 2022 President's Cancer Panel Report. The updated 2022 national coverage determination from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services reaffirms the value of SDM in offering LCS to eligible beneficiaries. The Shared Decision‐Making Task Group of the American Cancer Society National Lung Cancer Roundtable undertook a group consensus process to identify priorities for research and implementation related to SDM for LCS and then evaluated current knowledge in these areas. Priority areas included: (1) developing feasible, adaptable SDM training programs for health care professionals; (2) understanding the impact of alternative health system LCS models on SDM practice and outcomes; (3) developing and evaluating new patient decision aids for use with diverse populations and in varied settings; (4) offering conceptual clarity about what constitutes a high‐quality decision and developing appropriate quality measures; and (5) studying the use of prediction‐augmented screening to support SDM in practice. Gaps in current research in all areas were observed. The authors conclude with a research and implementation agenda to advance the quality and implementation of SDM for persons who might benefit from LCS. Patients who participate in shared decision making about lung cancer screening have greater knowledge, lower decisional conflict, and better adherence to screening compared with patients who do not participate. Understanding the causes of mortality for a declining species is essential for developing effective conservation and management strategies, particularly when anthropogenic activities are the primary threat. Using a competing hazards framework allows for robust estimation of the cause‐specific variation in risk that may exist across multiple dimensions, such as time and individual. Here, we estimated cause‐specific rates of severe injury and mortality for North Atlantic right whales (Eubalaena glacialis), a critically endangered species that is currently in peril due to human‐caused interactions. We developed a multistate capture–recapture model that leveraged 30 years of intensive survey effort yielding sightings of individuals with injury assessments and necropsies of carcass recoveries. We examined variation in the hazard rates of severe injury and mortality due to entanglements in fishing gear and vessel strikes as explained by temporal patterns and the age and reproductive status of the individual. We found strong evidence for increased rates of severe entanglement injuries after 2013 and for females with calves, with consequently higher marginal mortality. The model results also suggested that despite vessel strikes causing a lower average rate of severe injuries, the higher mortality rate conditional on injury results in significant total mortality risk, particularly for females resting from a recent calving event. Large uncertainty in the estimation of carcass recovery rate for vessel strike deaths permeated into the apportionment of mortality causes. The increased rates of North Atlantic right whale mortality in the last decade, particularly for reproducing females, has been responsible for the severe decline in the species. By apportioning the human‐caused threats using a quantitative approach with estimation of relevant uncertainty, this work can guide development of conservation and management strategies to facilitate species recovery. Post‐traumatic epilepsy (PTE) is a debilitating neurological disorder that develops after traumatic brain injury (TBI). Despite the high prevalence of PTE, current methods for predicting its occurrence remain limited. In this study, we aimed to identify imaging‐based markers for the prediction of PTE using machine learning. Specifically, we examined three imaging features: Lesion volumes, resting‐state fMRI‐based measures of functional connectivity, and amplitude of low‐frequency fluctuation (ALFF). We employed three machine‐learning methods, namely, kernel support vector machine (KSVM), random forest, and an artificial neural network (NN), to develop predictive models. Our results showed that the KSVM classifier, with all three feature types as input, achieved the best prediction accuracy of 0.78 AUC (area under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve) using nested cross‐validation. Furthermore, we performed voxel‐wise and lobe‐wise group difference analyses to investigate the specific brain regions and features that the model found to be most helpful in distinguishing PTE from non‐PTE populations. Our statistical analysis uncovered significant differences in bilateral temporal lobes and cerebellum between PTE and non‐PTE groups. Overall, our findings demonstrate the complementary prognostic value of MR‐based markers in PTE prediction and provide new insights into the underlying structural and functional alterations associated with PTE. Methods used to quantify evapotranspiration (ET) from Sphagnum‐dominated peatlands often assume that soil moisture is not a limiting factor; actual ET (AET) equals potential ET (PET). However, soil moisture can become limiting as peatlands dry, lowering AET below PET and necessitating the use of a surface resistance term in AET estimations. Quantifying and calculating surface resistance is a challenge for the non‐vascular plant surfaces such as those dominated by Sphagnum moss. This paper explores and quantifies the ecohydrological processes that drive Sphagnum resistance to ET. It is hypothesized that a relationship exists between the Sphagnum moss resistance and the ratio of unsaturated to saturated hydraulic conductivity (K‐ratio) for boreal peatlands, where the K‐ratio is a proxy for the hydrophysical properties of the porous medium. An empirical relationship between Sphagnum moss resistance and the K‐ratio was developed from data collected from a boreal peatland and implemented in the cold regions hydrological model. Empirically modelled resistance values (0–800 s m−1) did not match well with estimates from inverting observations and the Penman–Monteith (PM) algorithm (0–5000 s m−1). Difficulties in validating resistance values were possibly due to lack of moisture limiting conditions although this is seemingly contradicted by the alpha value being less than 1. Priestley–Taylor (PT) and PM algorithms in CRHM were used to estimate AET and compared with each other and with observations from an onsite eddy covariance (EC) system. The PT algorithm, using a site‐specific alpha value (0.75) performed the best with a mean difference of 9.4% (±12.0%) when compared to EC measurements of AET. The PM algorithm consistently overestimated EC measurements with a mean difference of 68.4% (±50.0%), even with a moss resistance incorporated into its use. The performance of PM algorithm is impeded by the uncertainty in quantifying Sphagnum resistance. Reducing this uncertainty should be a focus of future studies, as it does not require the use of a site‐specific alpha value. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Membranes facilitate scalable and continuous lithium concentration from hypersaline salt lakes and battery leachates. Conventional nanofiltration (NF) membranes, however, exhibit poor monovalent selectivity in high‐salinity environments due to weakened exclusion mechanisms. This study examines polyamide NF membranes coated with polyelectrolytes enriched with ammonium groups to maintain high monovalent cation selectivity in hypersaline conditions. Over 8000 ion rejection measurements are recorded using salt lake brines and battery leachates. The experiments exemplify the coated membrane's ability to reduce magnesium concentrations to 0.14% from salt lakes and elevate lithium purity to 98% from battery leachates, in a single filtration stage. The membrane's selectivity is retained after 12 weeks in acidic conditions. Molecular dynamics analyses reveal that the ammonium groups create an electrostatic barrier at low pH, selectively hindering multivalent cation transport. This is corroborated by the Coulombic attraction between cations and carboxylate groups, along with a repulsive barrier from ammonium groups. Despite a 14.7% increase in specific energy, a two‐stage NF system using the coated membranes for lithium recovery significantly reduces permeate magnesium composition to 0.031% from Chilean salt lake brines. For NMC leachates, the coated membranes achieve permeate lithium purity exceeding 99.5%, yielding enhanced permeate quality with minor increases in energy demands. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Monitoring electrical activity across multiple planes in 3D cell cultures and organoids is imperative to comprehensively understand their functional connections and behavior. However, traditional planar microelectrode arrays (MEAs) are intended for surface recordings and are inadequate in addressing this aspect. The limitations, such as longer production times and limited adaptability imposed by standard clean‐room techniques, constrain the design possibilities for 3D electrode arrays and potentially hinder effective cell‐electrode coupling. To tackle this challenge, a novel approach is presented that leverages rapid prototyping processes and additive manufacturing in combination with wet etching and electrodeposition to enhance electrode fabrication and performance. The laser‐patterned MEAs on glass, polyimide (PI) foil, or polyethylene terephthalate (PET) foil substrates incorporate high‐aspect ratio (up to 44:1) ink‐jet printed 3D electrode structures with heights up to 1 mm at a pitch of 200 µm, enabling precise recording within cell tissues. The specific shapes of the electrode tips and customizable 3D structures provide great flexibility in electrode placement. The versatility of the 3D MEAs is demonstrated by recording the electrophysiological activity of cortical organoids in situ, paving the way for investigating neural activity under regular or various pathologically altered conditions in vitro in a high throughput manner. Artemisinin‐based combination therapy (ACT) is the first‐line recommended treatment for uncomplicated malaria. Pharmacokinetic (PK) properties in pregnant women are often based on small studies and need to be confirmed and validated in larger pregnant patient populations. This study aimed to evaluate the PK properties of amodiaquine and its active metabolite, desethylamodiaquine, and piperaquine in women in their second and third trimester of pregnancy with uncomplicated P. falciparum infections. Eligible pregnant women received either artesunate‐amodiaquine (200/540 mg daily, n = 771) or dihydroartemisinin‐piperaquine (40/960 mg daily, n = 755) for 3 days (NCT00852423). Population PK properties were evaluated using nonlinear mixed‐effects modeling, and effect of gestational age and trimester was evaluated as covariates. 1071 amodiaquine and 1087 desethylamodiaquine plasma concentrations, and 976 piperaquine plasma concentrations, were included in the population PK analysis. Amodiaquine concentrations were described accurately with a one‐compartment disposition model followed by a two‐compartment disposition model of desethylamodiaquine. The relative bioavailability of amodiaquine increased with gestational age (1.25% per week). The predicted exposure to desethylamodiaquine was 2.8%–32.2% higher in pregnant women than that reported in non‐pregnant women, while day 7 concentrations were comparable. Piperaquine concentrations were adequately described by a three‐compartment disposition model. Neither gestational age nor trimester had significant impact on the PK of piperaquine. The predicted exposure and day 7 concentrations of piperaquine were similar to that reported in non‐pregnant women. In conclusion, the exposure to desethylamodiaquine and piperaquine was similar to that in non‐pregnant women. A survey of otolaryngologists and advanced practice providers specializing in otolaryngology found that almost half of respondents always or almost always prescribed antibiotic prophylaxis after nasal packing for epistaxis, despite limited evidence supporting this practice. The frequency of antibiotic prescribing was not related to gender, degree, fellowship status, geographic region, or years of training. The results suggest a need for providers to carefully assess the appropriateness of routine antibiotic prescribing given the lack of benefits in the literature and potential serious adverse events. Shared decision-making with patients should play a greater role in prescribing practices until further research clarifies the uncertainty regarding antibiotic benefit. [Extracted from the article]

Nine cyclists (age: 26 ± 5 years, height: 168 ± 5 cm and mass 58.5 ± 4.5 kg) were observed using continuous glucose monitoring devices throughout a training camp. Interstitial glucose [iG] data were captured via the Abbott libre sense biosensor (Abbott Laboratories) and paired with the Supersapiens software (TT1 Products Inc.). [iG] data were split into time ranges, that is, overall (24‐hourly), day‐time (06:00–23:59), night‐time (00:00–05:59) and exercise. [iG] data were stratified into percentage of time, below range ([TBR] < 70 mg/dl), in range ([TIR] 70–140 mg/dl) and above range ([TAR] ≥ 141 mg/dl). Differences in diurnal and nocturnal data were analysed via repeated measures analysis of variance and paired t‐tests where appropriate. p‐value of ≤0.05 was accepted as significant. Riders spent an average of 3 ± 1% TAR, 93 ± 2% TIR and 8 ± 3% TBR. Mean 24 h [iG] was 93 ± 2 mg/dl with a coefficient of variation (CV) of 18 ± 1%. Mean (day: 95 ± 3 vs. night: 86 ± 3 mg/dl and p < 0.001) and CV (day: 18 ± 1 vs. night: 9 ± 1% and p < 0.001) in [iG] were higher during the day‐time hours. TAR was greater during the day (day: 3 ± 1 vs. night: 0 ± 0% and p < 0.001) but TBR and TIR were similar. Glucose levels below the clinical range may have implications for those without diabetes and warrants further investigation. Highlights: The data provided in this study offer novel insight into the daily glycaemic responses of female cyclists engaged in consecutive days' worth of heavy exercise training as part of a performance camp.% Time above range was greatest during exercise whereas, the % time below range was at its lowest. This may offer some insight into the demands of exercise and glucose variability.Riders maintained a high percentage of time spent in range, yet displayed some time <70 mg/dl, that is, hypoglycaemia. Aim: The real‐world benefits of continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) in the broad type 2 diabetes (T2D) population are not well studied. Our study evaluated the impact of CGM use on health care resource utilization over 12 months in adults with T2D. Materials and Methods: This retrospective cohort analysis used Optum's de‐identified Market Clarity data of >79 million people to evaluate CGM use in people with T2D who were treated with non‐insulin (NIT), basal insulin (BIT) and prandial insulin therapy (PIT). The primary outcomes were changes in all‐cause hospitalizations, acute diabetes‐related hospitalizations and acute diabetes‐related emergency room visits during the 6‐ and 12‐month post‐index period following transition from blood glucose monitoring to CGM. A pre‐specified subgroup analysis assessed glucose control and medication changes among people with T2D over 1 year. Results: The analysis included 74 679 adults with T2D (NIT; n = 25 269), (BIT; n = 16 264) and (PIT; n = 33 146). Significant reductions in all‐cause hospitalizations, acute diabetes‐related hospitalizations and acute diabetes‐related emergency room visits were observed in the 6‐month post‐index period that were sustained during the 6–12 month post‐index period (NIT, −10.1%, −31.0%, −30.7%; BIT, −13.9%, −47.6%, −28.2%; and PIT, −22.6%, −52.7%, −36.6%, respectively). A subgroup analysis of 6030 people showed mean glycated haemoglobin reductions at approximately 3 months, which were also sustained throughout the post‐index period: NIT, −1.1 (0.05)%; BIT, −1.1 (0.06)%; and PIT, −0.9 (0.04)%, p < 0.0001. Conclusions: CGM use in real‐life across different therapeutic regimens in adults with T2D was associated with reductions in health care resource utilization with improved glucose control over 1 year. Background: The use of acetaminophen in the perioperative period has emerged as an attractive option for providing safer and cost‐effective analgesia in children. Aims: The primary aim of our project was to increase the use of acetaminophen (both oral and intravenous) in the perioperative period from a baseline of 39.5% to 50% for all surgical patients within 24 months. The secondary aim was to increase the use of enteral acetaminophen from 10% to 52.5% during the same period. Methods: A multidisciplinary team was formed, and model for improvement was chosen as the QI methodology. The primary measure was the total percentage of surgical patients receiving any form of perioperative acetaminophen, while our secondary measure was the percentage use of oral acetaminophen administration. We also tracked the average maximum PACU (Post Anesthesia Care Unit) pain scores and the percentage of patients receiving IV opioids. Multiple interventions were conducted, including education, increasing the availability of acetaminophen, and optimizing the electronic medical record (EMR). Monthly data was collected using an automated report in the EMR. Results: We successfully achieved our goal, increasing the use of acetaminophen from 39.5% to 70% within four months. Despite some fluctuations, by the end of 24 months, we not only met but surpassed our goal, with 63% of patients receiving perioperative acetaminophen. Similarly, the usage of oral acetaminophen increased from a baseline of 10% to 78%. Our average maximum PACU pain scores improved from 5.4 to 5.2, and the percentage of patients receiving rescue opioids decreased from 15.4 to 13.1. Conclusion: We successfully achieved and sustained our goals of improving acetaminophen use for our surgical patients without worsening pain scores or worsening use of intravenous opioids. Climate elasticity of streamflow represents a nondimensional measure of the sensitivity of streamflow to climatic factors. Estimation of such elasticities from observational records has become an important alternative to scenario‐based methods of evaluating streamflow sensitivity to climate. Nearly all previous elasticity studies have used a definition of elasticity known as arc elasticity, which measures changes in streamflow about mean values of streamflow and climate. Using observational records in the western U.S., our findings reveal that elasticity definitions based on power law models lead to both regional and basin specific estimates of elasticity which are physically more realistic than estimates based on arc elasticity. Evaluating the ability of arc and power law elasticity estimators in reproducing Dooge's complementary relationship (DCR) between potential evapotranspiration and precipitation elasticities reveal that power law elasticities estimated from at‐site, panel, and hierarchical statistical models reproduce DCR, whereas corresponding estimators based on arc elasticity cannot reproduce DCR. Importantly, our regional elasticity formulations using panel and hierarchical formulations led to estimates of both regional and basin specific estimates of elasticities, enabling and contrasting streamflow sensitivity to climate across both basins and regions. Purpose: To investigate the feasibility of diffusion tensor brain imaging at 0.55T with comparisons against 3T. Methods: Diffusion tensor imaging data with 2 mm isotropic resolution was acquired on a cohort of five healthy subjects using both 0.55T and 3T scanners. The signal‐to‐noise ratio (SNR) of the 0.55T data was improved using a previous SNR‐enhancing joint reconstruction method that jointly reconstructs the entire set of diffusion weighted images from k‐space using shared‐edge constraints. Quantitative diffusion tensor parameters were estimated and compared across field strengths. We also performed a test–retest assessment of repeatability at each field strength. Results: After applying SNR‐enhancing joint reconstruction, the diffusion tensor parameters obtained from 0.55T data were strongly correlated (R2≥0.70$$ {R}^2\ge 0.70 $$) with those obtained from 3T data. Test–retest analysis showed that SNR‐enhancing reconstruction improved the repeatability of the 0.55T diffusion tensor parameters. Compelling evidence indicates that continental crust can subduct to >300 km and even enter the mantle transition zone (MTZ). However, detecting continental materials within the deep Earth is challenging due to our incomplete knowledge about their physical properties at mantle conditions. We use a newly compiled mineral‐physical database coupled with thermodynamic modeling to calculate seismic velocities of the subducted continental crust (SCC) beyond 150 km. Results show that the SCC has one seismically detectable window depth (300–390 km) with ∼4% VP anomaly. Besides, the upper crust has another two window depths (<250 km and 610–660 km) with anomalies of −6.4%–−1.6% and −7.6%–−2.2%, and 3.6%–7.9% and 3.9%–8.6% for VP and VS compared to those of the ambient mantle, respectively. These predicted SCC characteristics match seismic anomalies at mantle depths and suggest subducted upper crust potentially contributing to the high‐velocity anomalies in the MTZ. Introduction Methods Results Discussion Imposter phenomenon (IP), feeling as if a person does not belong, has been reported in medical students at various rates. In medical literature, this phenomenon has often been defined as a ‘syndrome’, but other studies have described it as a dynamic experience that can have various impacts on different people at different time points. Although studies have linked IP with other phenomena such as burnout in residents and physicians, no studies have examined its aetiology nor how these feelings are experienced by medical students.With the use of social identity theory as a framework, the authors analysed 233 reflective essays for elements of IP across eight cohorts of medical students from two institutions. Students responded to a prompt that asked: ‘What was one part of your identity that you thought you would have to change in order to become a physician?’ Included reflections were analysed using the framework method.Elements of IP were identified in 121 reflections (52%) and were categorised into three major themes: (1) Comparing oneself to an idealised image of a medical student, (2) Comparing oneself to an idealised image of a physician and (3) Concerns about presentation of self to others. Each theme contained two or more sub‐themes. Commonly, students discussed how their own personality traits, experiences, backgrounds and identities cast doubt on their sense of belonging in medicine.The results of this study were consistent across both institutions, suggesting that imposter feelings are common among all first‐year medical students. However, the extent of the impact of these feelings on their identity formation depends on the individual lived experiences of students and the context in which these feelings arise. Wood ducks (Aix sponsa) are secondary natural cavity‐nesting species that also nest in artificial nest boxes. Since the early 20th century, nest boxes have been widely deployed in North America to increase nesting sites for wood ducks and bolster production. Equipping nest boxes with a predator guard beneath the box is a common practice to deter climbing predators from accessing boxes; however, there is no device to repel avian predators. We found that eastern rat snakes (Pantherophis alleghaniensis) and woodpeckers (Picidae) were primary predators of wood duck eggs in boxes in North Carolina and South Carolina. Accordingly, we designed experiments to deter snakes and woodpeckers using a commercial brand of snake repellent pellets and a plastic raptor decoy, respectively. Male and female snakes that accessed boxes averaged 1.4 m (SE = 2.0 cm) in length. Digital camera data indicated that snakes climbed nest box posts and thrust their anterior body atop predator guards to continue their ascent into the box. We recorded 671 nest failures of which rat snakes accounted for 39.9% (n = 268) and woodpeckers 22.4% (n = 150). Snakes consumed ≥649 eggs, observed as protuberances in their stomachs. Our experiment showed that commercial snake repellent pellets did not deter snakes (P = 0.957). Placing a plastic hawk decoy atop nest boxes when females were incubating ≥12 days increased nest survival during the incubation stage (P = 0.001). Wood duck nest boxes at our study sites may be experiencing increased nest predation by rat snakes due to poor maintenance and installation of predator guards. Rat snakes and woodpeckers may be depredating wood duck eggs in the southeastern United States at unknown rates, potentially decreasing production and recruitment from these structures. Background: American pediatric anesthesiologists have a long history of international volunteerism. However, the US healthcare system also benefits from the contributions of a large number of physicians who come from other nations to work within its borders. Despite this fact, little is known about the contribution of international medical graduates (IMG) to the pediatric anesthesiology subspecialty. Aims: To characterize the contribution of IMG to the field of pediatric anesthesiology in the United States, and to elucidate the geographic and demographic distribution of their national origins so as to understand the movement of skilled personnel between countries. Methods: Online physician directories of American children's hospitals were searched, and anesthesiologists were recorded for their national origin of medical education. International graduates were reported as a percentage of the pediatric anesthesiology workforce. Those attending medical colleges catering to American students ("offshore" medical schools) were analyzed separately from other IMGs. The cohort of non‐offshore IMGs were analyzed for national and continental origins, and by national level of economic development. Results: Of 1979 anesthesiologists analyzed, 397 attended medical school outside the United States, with 58 being from offshore schools. The remaining 338 represented 17.1% of the total pediatric anesthesiology workforce. They came from 58 countries on six continents. Of those, 65.1% attended medical school in low‐ and middle‐income countries. Conclusions: International medical graduates, disproportionately from low‐ and middle‐income countries, compose a large proportion of the US Pediatric Anesthesiology workforce. While these clinicians play a vital role in providing care for American children, the potential impacts of skilled physician loss on their nations of origin must also be considered. Aim: The present study examined the leaching and cytotoxicity of bismuth from ProRoot MTA and aimed to identify whether bismuth leaching was affected by the cement base and the immersion regime used. Methodology: The leaching profile of bismuth was examined from ProRoot MTA and compared with hydroxyapatite containing 20% bismuth oxide as well as hydroxyapatite and tricalcium silicate to investigate whether bismuth release changed depending on the cement base. Bismuth leaching was determined after 30 and 180 days of ageing immersed in Dulbecco's modified Eagle's medium (DMEM) using mass spectroscopy (ICP‐MS). The media were either unchanged or regularly replenished. The pH, surface microstructure and phase changes of aged materials were assessed. Wistar rat femoral bone marrow stromal cells (BMSCs) and cutaneous fibroblasts were isolated, cultured and seeded for cell counting (trypan blue live/dead) after exposure to non‐aged, 30‐ and 180‐days‐aged samples in regularly replenished DMEM. Aged DMEM in contact with materials was also used to culture BMSCs to investigate the effect of material leachates on the cells. Gene expression analysis was also carried out after direct exposure of cells to non‐aged materials. Differences between groups were statistically tested at a significance level of 5%. Results: All materials exhibited alterations after immersion in DMEM and this increased with longer exposure times. The bismuth leached from ProRoot MTA as detected by ICP‐MS. Aged ProRoot MTA samples exhibited a black discolouration and surface calcium carbonate deposition. ProRoot MTA influenced cell counts after direct exposure and its 180‐days leachates reduced BMSC viability. After direct BMSC contact with non‐aged ProRoot MTA an upregulation of metallothionein (MT1 and MT2A) expression and down‐regulation of collagen‐1a (Col‐1a) and bone sialoprotein (BSP) expression was identified. Conclusions: Bismuth leaching was observed throughout 180‐days observation period from all materials containing bismuth oxide. This negatively influenced cell viability and gene expression associated with bismuth exposure. Prior to the 19th century, the Mississippi Alluvial Valley (MAV) was a vast bottomland hardwood forest ecosystem with associated wetlands and intrinsic resources. Conversion for human uses in the 20th century transformed the MAV into an agriculturally dominated system. Since the late 1980s, federal and state incentivized conservation programs for landowners have helped restore wetlands on private lands in the MAV. Given the need to evaluate incentivized private lands in relation to waterfowl use, we used a sample of 241 radiomarked female mallards (Anas platyrhynchos) and evaluated their use of private and public lands in the Mississippi portion of the MAV during winters 2010–2015. Our objective was to examine mallard use of public, incentivized private, and non‐incentivized private lands and to evaluate if use changed by time of day and during and after the hunting season. Among all diurnal and nocturnal locations of mallards, 43.3% (n = 3,995) occurred on public lands, 19.5% (n = 1,802) were on incentivized private lands, and 37.2% (n = 3,432) on non‐incentivized private lands. Of mallard locations on incentivized private lands, mallards exhibited greatest use of Wetland Reserve Easements (WRE; 12.4%) and Conservation Reserve Program tracts (CRP; 4.7%). Mallards used public lands more diurnally within hunting seasons and more during hunting seasons than post‐hunting season, which we attributed to the presence of designated sanctuaries that may have provided refuge from hunting and other disturbances. Post‐hunting season, mallards increased their use of incentivized and non‐incentivized private lands, perhaps to exploit seasonal emergent wetland and remnant agricultural foods. Radiomarked mallards used a variety of landcover types across public and private land, reinforcing the importance of habitat complexes for wintering mallards and other dabbling ducks. Conservation program lands, such as CRP and WREs, provide emergent and forested wetlands that complement flooded agricultural lands and natural wetlands in the MAV. When areal availability estimates of incentivized private lands are accessible from government or other partners, we encourage future researchers to investigate selectivity by mallards and other waterfowl of public, incentivized, and non‐incentivized lands. Static granular packings play a central role in numerous industrial applications and natural settings. In these situations, fluid or fine particle flow through a bed of static particles is heavily influenced by the narrowest passage connecting the pores of the packing, commonly referred to as pore throats, or constrictions. Existing studies predominantly assume monodisperse rigid particles, but this is an oversimplification of the problem. In this work, we illustrate the connection between pore throat size, polydispersity, and particle deformation in a packed bed of spherical particles. Simple analytical expressions are provided to link these properties of the packing, followed by examples from Discrete Element Method (DEM) simulations of fine particle percolation demonstrating the impact of polydispersity and particle deformation. Our intent is to emphasize the substantial impact of polydispersity and particle deformation on constriction size, underscoring the importance of accounting for these effects in particle transport in granular packings. Cell therapy is a potential novel treatment for cardiac regeneration and numerous studies have attempted to transplant cells to regenerate the myocardium lost during myocardial infarction. To date, only minimal improvements to cardiac function have been reported. This is likely to be the result of low cell retention and survival following transplantation. This study aimed to improve the delivery and engraftment of viable cells by using an injectable microcarrier that provides an implantable, biodegradable substrate for attachment and growth of cardiomyocytes derived from induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSC). We describe the fabrication and characterisation of Thermally Induced Phase Separation (TIPS) microcarriers and their surface modification to enable iPSC‐derived cardiomyocyte attachment in xeno‐free conditions is described. The selected formulation resulted in iPSC attachment, expansion, and retention of pluripotent phenotype. Differentiation of iPSC into cardiomyocytes on the microcarriers is investigated in comparison with culture on 2D tissue culture plastic surfaces. Microcarrier culture is shown to support culture of a mature cardiomyocyte phenotype, be compatible with injectable delivery, and reduce anoikis. The findings from this study demonstrate that TIPS microcarriers provide a supporting matrix for culturing iPSC and iPSC‐derived cardiomyocytes in vitro and are suitable as an injectable cell‐substrate for cardiac regeneration. This study investigated the effects of once‐a‐day (OAD) and twice‐a‐day (TAD) milking strategies on Cheddar cheese properties, within an Irish pasture‐based system. Cheese derived from OAD milk was more yellow, with significantly higher b* values and a significantly higher β‐carotene content. A significantly higher cheese yield also resulted from OAD milk. Compositional data were largely consistent with previously reported results, and no meaningful differences were found in texture, proteolysis, pH, volatile‐organic‐compounds and free‐fatty‐acid profile. Indications are that OAD milking does not negatively impact Cheddar quality, providing valuable insights for those considering milking frequency impacts on this key dairy product. Aims: Insulin efsitora alfa (efsitora) is a once‐weekly basal insulin. This review describes the study design and rationale of the efsitora phase 3 Once Weekly (QW) Insulin Therapy (QWINT) clinical development programme, including the five trials, QWINT‐1 through QWINT‐5. Materials and Methods: The five trials included insulin‐naïve adults (QWINT‐1 and ‐2) with type 2 diabetes (T2D), adults with T2D previously treated with basal insulin (QWINT‐3 and ‐4), and QWINT‐5 in adults with type 1 diabetes. All five trials were designed as multicentre, randomized, controlled, open‐label, treat‐to‐target studies to investigate the efficacy and safety of efsitora versus active once‐daily basal insulin comparators (insulin glargine U100 or insulin degludec U100). The primary objective of each trial is to compare the change in HbA1c from baseline to week 26 or 52 between efsitora and the active comparator. The key secondary objectives include change in fasting glucose, insulin dose and continuous glucose monitoring variables, and patient‐reported outcome questionnaires. Conclusions: The QWINT development programme includes a racially and geographically diverse population to provide important information regarding the efficacy and safety of efsitora and its clinical management of people with diabetes. Sedimentary‐derived (S‐type) granites are an important product of orogenic metamorphism, and a range of subtypes can be recognized by differences in field occurrence, mineralogy and geochemistry. These subtypes can reflect variations of initial protolith composition, partial melting reactions, pressure and temperature of anatexis, or magmatic processes that occur during ascent through the crust (e.g. mineral fractional crystallization or crustal assimilation). Together, these diverse factors complicate geological interpretation of the history of peraluminous felsic melt fractions in orogenic settings. To assess the influence of these factors, we performed integrated field investigation, petrology, geochemistry, geochronology and phase equilibrium modelling on a series of leucosomes within migmatite associated with different S‐type granites within the Khondalite belt, North China craton (NCC), which is an archetypal collisional orogen. Three types of leucosome are recognized in the east Khondalite belt: leucogranitic leucosome, K‐feldspar (Kfs)‐rich granitic leucosome and garnet (Grt)‐rich granitic leucosome. Phase equilibrium modelling of partial melting and fractional crystallization processes indicate that the leucogranitic leucosomes were mostly produced through fluid‐present melting, Kfs‐rich granitic leucosomes are produced through muscovite dehydration melting with 3 vol.% garnet fractional crystallization, and Grt‐rich granitic leucosomes are produced through biotite dehydration melting with 20–40 vol.% K‐feldspar fractional crystallization and up to 20 vol.% peritectic garnet entrainment. Mineral fractional crystallization and peritectic mineral entrainment occur in the source during melting, and play equally important roles in partial melting mechanisms in terms of affecting the geochemical compositions of granitic melts. Thus, we suggest that peraluminous felsic magmas preserved in collisional orogens are dominantly produced by fluid‐absent melting in the middle to deep continental crust, although extraction of low‐volume melt fractions from an anatectic source region at shallower depths during fluid‐present melting can also generate small amounts of S‐type granites that subsequently crystallize at high structural levels in the crust. High‐elevation, low‐relief continental plateaus are major topographic features and profoundly influence atmospheric circulation, sediment transport and storage, and biodiversity. Although orogenic surface‐uplift mechanisms for modern continental plateaus near known plate margins like Tibet are well‐characterized, they cannot account for examples in intracontinental settings like the Colorado Plateau. In contrast to canonical plate‐tectonic uplift mechanisms, broad‐scale hydration‐induced metasomatism of the lower crust has been suggested to reduce its density and increase its buoyancy sufficiently to contribute to isostatic uplift. However, the relationships between key petrophysical properties in these environments are not fully quantified, which limits application of this model. Here, we develop a series of petrological models that describe the petrological and topographic effects of fluid–rock interaction in non‐deforming continental crust of varying composition. We apply an open‐system petrological modelling framework that utilizes reactive‐transport calculations to determine the spatial and temporal scales over which mineralogic transformations take place compared with the magnitude of infiltration of aqueous fluids derived from devolatilization of subducting oceanic lithosphere. The buoyancy effect of hydration‐induced de‐densification is most significant for metabasic lower crust, intermediate for metapelitic crust, and minimal for granodioritic crust. We apply these results to a case study of the ~2 km‐high Colorado Plateau and demonstrate that under ideal conditions, hydration of its lower–middle crust by infiltrating aqueous fluids released by the Farallon slab during Cenozoic low‐angle subduction could have uplifted the plateau surface by a maximum of ~1 km over 16 Myr. However, realistically, although hydration likely has a measurable effect on surface tectonics, the uplift of orogenic plateaus is likely dominantly controlled by other factors, such as lithospheric delamination. The maximum information entropy production model (MaxEnt), the relative humidity at equilibrium approach (ETRHEQ), and the Surface Flux Equilibrium model (SFE) are three recently developed models to estimate evapotranspiration. Although the connection between ETRHEQ and SFE is evident, no attempts have been made to investigate the congruence, distinctions, or potential complementarity between the two models and MaxEnt. Our mathematical analysis demonstrates that minimizing the vertical variance of RH in ETRHEQ is equivalent to minimizing the dissipation function of energy fluxes in MaxEnt, under the assumption of the same eddy diffusivity of heat and water vapor and with a specific expression for the ratio between the thermal inertia terms for H and LE. The connection between ETRHEQ, SFE, and MaxEnt is independent of Monin‐Obukhov similarity theory (MOST)'s extremum solution, and MOST's extreme solution can be viewed as equivalent to introducing a constant correction factor to account for atmospheric stability. While ETRHEQ and MaxEnt can be united within a single hydrometeorological framework, they diverge in their approaches to modeling evapotranspiration, particularly in how they address the roles of vegetation and land surface heterogeneity. More importantly, the unified framework suggests that turbulence fluxes within the atmospheric boundary layer adhere to the principles of maximum information entropy production. The way in which dissipation, along with its associated entropy production, is established using information entropy theory deviates from traditional thermodynamic entropy formulations. Exploring the connection between thermodynamic and information entropy and developing proper formulations of dissipation for energy fluxes presents an appealing avenue for prospective research. Wildfire substantially alters aquatic ecosystems by inducing moderate to catastrophic physical and chemical changes. However, the relations of environmental and watershed variables that drive those effects are complex. We present a Driver‐Factor‐Stressor‐Effect (DFSE) conceptual framework to assess the current state of the science related to post‐wildfire water‐quality. We reviewed 64 peer‐reviewed papers using the DFSE framework to identify drivers, factors, stressors, and effects associated with each study. A total of five drivers were identified and ranked according to their frequency of occurrence in the literature: atmospheric processes > fire characteristics > ecologic processes and characteristics > land surface characteristics > soil characteristics. Commonly reported stressors include increased nutrients, runoff, and sediment transport. Furthermore, although several different factors have been used at least once to explain water‐quality effects, relatively few factors outside of precipitation and fire characteristics are frequently studied. We identified several gaps indicating the need for long‐term monitoring, multi‐factor studies, consideration of organic contaminants, consideration of groundwater, and inclusion of soil characteristics. This assessment expands on other reviews and meta‐analyses by exploring causal linkages between influential variables and overall effects in post‐wildfire watersheds. Information gathered from our assessment and the framework itself can be used to inform future monitoring plans and as a guide for modeling efforts focused on better understanding specific processes or to mitigate potential risks of post‐wildfire water quality. Combinations of different biomaterials with their own advantages as well as functionalization with other components have long been implemented in tissue engineering to improve the performance of the overall material. Biomaterials, particularly hydrogel platforms, have shown great potential for delivering compounds such as drugs, growth factors, and neurotrophic factors, as well as cells, in neural tissue engineering applications. In central the nervous system, astrocyte reactivity and glial scar formation are significant and complex challenges to tackle for neural and functional recovery. GelMA hydrogel‐based tissue constructs have been developed in this study and combined with two different formulations of phosphate glass fibers (PGFs) (with Fe3+ or Ti2+ oxide) to impose physical and mechanical cues for modulating astrocyte cell behavior. This study was also aimed at investigating the effects of lithium‐loaded GelMA‐PGFs hydrogels in alleviating astrocyte reactivity and glial scar formation offering novel perspectives for neural tissue engineering applications. The rationale behind introducing lithium is driven by its long‐proven therapeutic benefits in mental disorders, and neuroprotective and pronounced anti‐inflammatory properties. The optimal concentrations of lithium and LPS were determined in vitro on primary rat astrocytes. Furthermore, qPCR was conducted for gene expression analysis of GFAP and IL‐6 markers on primary astrocytes cultured 3D into GelMA and GelMA‐PGFs hydrogels with and without lithium and in vitro stimulated with LPS for astrocyte reactivity. The results suggest that the combination of bioactive phosphate‐based glass fibers and lithium loading into GelMA structures may impact GFAP expression and early IL‐6 expression. Background: Recent advances in hardware and software permit the use of cardiac MRI of late gestation fetuses, however there is a paucity of MRI‐based reference values. Purpose: To provide initial data on fetal cardiac MRI‐derived cardiac dimensions, volumes, ventricular function, and left ventricular longitudinal strain in healthy developing fetuses >30 weeks gestational age. Study Type: Prospective. Population: Twenty‐five third trimester (34 ± 1 weeks, range of 32–37 weeks gestation) women with healthy developing fetuses. Field Strength/Sequence: Studies were performed at 1.5 T and 3 T. Cardiac synchronization was achieved with a Doppler ultrasound device. The protocol included T2 single shot turbo spin echo stacks for fetal weight and ultrasound probe positioning, and multiplanar multi‐slice cine balanced steady state free precession gradient echo sequences. Assessment: Primary analyses were performed by a single observer. Weight indexed right ventricular (RV) and left ventricular (LV) volumes and function were calculated from short axis (SAX) stacks. Cardiac dimensions were calculated from the four‐chamber and SAX stacks. Single plane LV longitudinal strain was calculated from the four‐chamber stack. Interobserver variability was assessed in 10 participants. Cardiac MRI values were compared against available published normative fetal echocardiogram data using z‐scores. Statistical Tests: Mean and SDs were calculated for baseline maternal/fetal demographics, cardiac dimensions, volumes, ventricular function, and left ventricular longitudinal strain. Bland–Altman and intraclass correlation coefficient analysis was performed to test interobserver variability. Results: The mean gestational age was 34 ± 1.4 weeks. The mean RV and LV end diastolic volumes were 3.1 ± 0.6 mL/kg and 2.4 ± 0.5 mL/kg respectively. The mean RV cardiac output was 198 ± 49 mL/min/kg while the mean LV cardiac output was 173 ± 43 mL/min/kg. Data Conclusion: This paper reports initial reference values obtained by cardiac MRI in healthy developing third trimester fetuses. MRI generally resulted in slightly larger indexed values (by z‐score) compared to reports in literature using fetal echocardiography. Parental ethnic‐racial socialization is a source of adolescents' resilience against ethnic‐racial discrimination. Recent meta‐analyses have documented the promotive aspects of ethnic‐racial socialization (i.e., how ethnic‐racial socialization is directly related with adolescents' adjustment regardless of their discrimination experiences). However, extant empirical studies have produced conflicting results about the protection or moderating role of ethnic‐racial socialization, with studies suggesting that ethnic‐racial socialization buffers, exacerbates, or does not moderate the impacts of ethnic‐racial discrimination. We offer a reconceptualization of existing studies' findings and draw from existing theories to propose Hidden Resilience as a new conceptual framework that highlights how resilience and the positive benefits linked to ethnic‐racial socialization may not be noticeable when studies use psychosocial measures but is rather hidden "underneath the skin." Conversations about racism may momentarily feel uncomfortable, upsetting, or stressful for youth, but such conversations can help youth learn how to cope with ethnic‐racial discrimination in the long term. Following a review of studies supporting our conceptual framework, we provide suggestions for future research to expand the field's understanding of resilience linked to ethnic‐racial socialization. Conspecific and interspecific brood parasitism are alternate reproductive strategies more pervasive in waterfowl than in any other group of birds. While previous research has measured costs incurred by nest hosts incubating parasitized clutches, few studies have focused on the relative success of parasites. Here, we evaluated the success of wood duck (Aix sponsa) and hooded merganser (Lophodytes cucullatus) eggs laid parasitically in Louisiana and Mississippi. We monitored nest boxes, assigned eggs in each nest as host or parasitic, and determined the number of eggs that hatched and failed. Across all study areas (1994–1999 and 2020–2023), we monitored 1750 wood duck and 377 hooded merganser nests; ~13% of wood duck and ~24% of hooded merganser nests were interspecifically parasitized. We modeled egg survival of 2925 host and 691 parasitic eggs from 197 successful nests (≥1 hatched egg, regardless of species). Wood duck eggs laid in hooded merganser nests had lower survival [0.293, CI = 95% credible intervals (after, CI) = 0.176, 0.439] than hooded merganser eggs (0.762, CI = 0.704, 0.810) laid in wood duck nests. Clutch size negatively influenced parasitic wood duck egg survival (β = −.24, CI = −0.39, −0.10) but had a slight positive influence on parasitic hooded merganser eggs (β =.08, CI = 0.04, 0.12). Our results revealed that hooded merganser eggs experience higher success when laid parasitically in wood duck nests, whereas wood duck eggs experience lower success when laid parasitically in hooded merganser nests. Our results reveal new complexity in waterfowl interspecific brood parasitism, where the success of parasitic eggs is species‐, host‐, and context‐specific. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Within the context of eliciting partner country cooperation and interests alignment, U.S. presidents and their administrations have a wide array of policy tools at their disposal to mitigate terrorist threats emanating from other countries. Yet, the factors that account for variation in American presidents' and their administrations' specific counterterrorism policy choices to influence target states' behavior remain underexplored. To understand the underlying factors that influence the adoption of different U.S. counterterrorism tools within a given country, and their variation across administrations in the post‐9/11 era, we examine the case of Pakistan—a challenging yet enduring partner in the U.S.‐led Global War on Terror. Categorizing the counterterrorism policies and tools adopted by Presidents Bush, Obama, and Trump as punitive or nonpunitive policy decisions, we explore the extent to which each president's policy choices during the Global War on Terror were largely a continuation of predecessors or responded to specific shifting patterns of terrorism within Pakistan. Understanding the formation of and changes in citizens' extreme views on complex public policies is an important task in our increasingly polarized world. Behavioral sciences offer insights on cognitive processes and potential mechanisms to mitigate extremity in policy preferences and develop more realistic models that underprint political attitudes. About a decade ago, Fernbach et al. (2013) offered a simple cognitive intervention to reduce political extremism: Confront people with their lack of procedural policy knowledge such that their overestimation of knowledge is shattered. We conducted three high‐value replications and extensions to examine the applicability of Fernbach's proposed theory among a sample of 5,139 citizens in postconflict Hong Kong. Our results suggest the opposite: Positional extremity is higher when citizens articulate their understanding of policy. Our study, which is larger in scale, draws on different time periods and extended interventions and examines more controversial policy issues has epistemological and cognitive implications for future research on the political psychology of extremism. Objective: In the era of stereoelectroencephalography (SEEG), many studies have been devoted to understanding the role of interictal high‐frequency oscillations. High‐frequency activity (HFA) at seizure onset has been identified as a marker of epileptogenic zone. We address the physiological significance of ictal HFAs and their relation to clinical semiology. Methods: We retrospectively identified patients with pure focal primary motor epilepsy. We selected only patients in whom SEEG electrodes were optimally placed in the motor cortex as confirmed by electrical stimulation. Based on these narrow inclusion criteria, we extensively studied 5 patients (3 males and 2 females, mean age = 22.4 years) using time–frequency analysis and time correlation with motor signs onset. Results: A total of 157 analyzable seizures were recorded in 5 subjects. The first 2 subjects had tonic or clonic semiology with rare secondary generalization. Subject 3 had atonic onset followed by clonic hand/arm flexion. Subject 4 had clusters of tonic and atonic facial movements. Subject 5 had upper extremity tonic movements. The median frequency of the fast activity extracted from the Epileptogenic Zone Fingerprint pipeline in the first 4 subjects was 76 Hz (interquartile range = 21.9Hz). Positive motor signs did not occur concomitantly with high gamma activity developing in the motor cortex. Motor signs began at the end of HFAs. Interpretation: This study supports the hypothesis of an inhibitory effect of ictal HFAs. The frequency range in the gamma band was associated with the direction of the clinical output effect.
