The presence of dyes in wastewater poses a significant environmental challenge due to their permanence toxicity and potential to harm ecosystems. Because of their high porosity and adjustable characteristics, metal‐organic frameworks (MOFs) have become attractive materials for effective dye removal. Among various MOFs, zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) have garnered significant attention, especially ZIF‐8, for its excellent stability, significant porosity, adjustable pore size and remarkable adsorption capacity. This review article provides a comprehensive overview of recent advances in the implementation of ZIF‐8 and its composites for the removal of pollutants from wastewater. The various synthesis methods, structural characteristics and dye adsorption performance of ZIF‐8 and its composites are discussed. Furthermore, impact of the different factors such as pH, temperature, dye concentration, contact time etc. were also highlighted. Moreover, the detailed adsorption mechanism was also discussed. Finally, the current challenges and future perspectives in the production of materials based on ZIF‐8 for the removal of dyes were also presented. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A sequential one‐pot direct strategy for the synthesis of 2‐hydroxy‐2‐substituted‐2H‐benzo[b][1,4]oxazin‐3(4H)‐ones is developed under ambient conditions with moderate to good yields (up to 75 %) by regioselective ring‐opening of spiro‐epoxy/aziridine oxindoles with 50 % aq. H2O2 followed by rearrangement reaction in presence of amberlyst‐15 catalyst. Further, sequential reaction with aldehydes/ketones and carbonyldiimidazole (CDI) gave spiro[benzo[b][1,4]oxazine‐2,4′‐[1,3]dioxolan]‐3(4H)‐ones and spiro[benzo[b][1,4]oxazine‐2,4′‐[1,3]dioxolane]‐2′,3(4H)‐diones, respectively. The current study involves the synthesis of two azomethine compounds, (E)‐2‐((6‐nitrobenzo[d][1,3]dioxol‐5‐yl)methylene)amino)phenol (2AP6NO) and (E)‐2‐((4‐ethylbenzylidene)amino)phenol (2AP4ETH), as well as their theoretical investigations. The synthesized azomethine compounds were then characterized by combustion analysis (CHN), FT‐IR, NMR (1H and 13C), and single crystal X‐ray diffraction (SC‐XRD) analysis. The SC‐XRD study confirmed the enol tautomeric form of 2AP6NO as well as 2AP4ETH. The strong and comparatively weak intermolecular interactions were elaborated by Hirshfeld surface analysis. For both compounds, intermolecular interaction energies between the pair of molecules, energy framework, and void analysis were calculated to visualize the three‐dimensional topology of the crystal packing. Additionally, quantum chemical computations were also utilized to study the optical and nonlinear optical (NLO) response. The molecular geometries were optimized at the M06‐2X/6‐311G* method and equated to their respective experimental counterparts. The third‐order NLO polarizabilities were also calculated at the same level of theory. The calculated average third‐order NLO polarizabilities were 62.55×10−36 esu and 55.08×10−36 esu, respectively, predicting the modest behavior of the above compounds when displaying NLO properties. International sanctions have significant economic effects with long‐lasting negative consequences for human development. However, academic research on the gendered effects of sanctions is scarce. In fact, most work on sanctions has been either gender neutral or gender blind. This article examines the labor market effects of economic and noneconomic sanctions, imposed by the United States and the United Nations, on male and female employment in manufacturing industries in Iran. The empirical analysis is based on four‐digit industry‐level employment data from 102 manufacturing industries between 1995 and 2014. Our main findings suggest that international sanctions have disproportionate effects on male and female employment. In particular, we find that sanctions hurt female employment significantly more than male employment. This effect is further compounded in industries that are more capital intensive, where labor compensation has a relatively low share in value added. Furthermore, in industries with relatively high reliance on imported inputs, female employment suffers more from sanctions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Summary: Despite the acknowledged injustice and widespread existence of parachute research studies conducted in low‐ or middle‐income countries by researchers from institutions in high‐income countries, there is currently no pragmatic guidance for how academic journals should evaluate manuscript submissions and challenge this practice. We assembled a multidisciplinary group of editors and researchers with expertise in international health research to develop this consensus statement. We reviewed relevant existing literature and held three workshops to present research data and holistically discuss the concept of equitable authorship and the role of academic journals in the context of international health research partnerships. We subsequently developed statements to guide prospective authors and journal editors as to how they should address this issue. We recommend that for manuscripts that report research conducted in low‐ or middle‐income countries by collaborations including partners from one or more high‐income countries, authors should submit accompanying structured reflexivity statements. We provide specific questions that these statements should address and suggest that journals should transparently publish reflexivity statements with accepted manuscripts. We also provide guidance to journal editors about how they should assess the structured statements when making decisions on whether to accept or reject submitted manuscripts. We urge journals across disciplines to adopt these recommendations to accelerate the changes needed to halt the practice of parachute research. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Triazole fungicides may potentially harm human health. The 'quick, easy, cheap, effective, rugged, and safe' approach has become popular for extraction and cleanup during pesticide residue analysis. We aimed to (a) validate a method for the simultaneous determination of myclobutanil, penconazole, tebuconazole, and triadimenol in squash using LC–MS/MS and (b) determine the pre‐harvest intervals (PHIs) and assess the related risk of consuming squash cultivated under open‐field conditions in Saudi Arabia. Using acetonitrile as the extraction solvent and fourfold dilution in deionized water led to weak signal suppression (<−6.1%). The limits of quantitation ranged from 10 to 40 μg/kg. Mean recovery and relative standard deviation ranged from 81.7 to 96.3% and from 3.6 to 11.4%. The half‐lives ranged from 2.22 to 3.83 days, and the dissipation followed first‐order kinetics. The terminal residues of myclobutanil, penconazole, tebuconazole, and triadimenol were <0.771, <0.307, <0.459, and <0.954 mg/kg, respectively, 7 days after two or three applications of recommended dosages. The PHIs of 7.1–11.4, 8.7–13.1, 3.8–5.3, and 11.3–14.3 days are suggested after the application of the recommended dose and double the recommended dose. A consumer risk assessment based on estimated dietary intake indicated that the consumption of squash treated with the recommended doses does not pose a significant health risk. Herein, two‐shaped cerium oxide nanoparticles (NPs), that is, spherical and cubical, were synthesized through hydrothermal approach by tuning reaction temperatures. The morphology and structural and chemical composition of both samples were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high‐resolution TEM (HRTEM), X‐ray diffraction (XRD), and X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), respectively. Both types of NPs were subjected to photodegradation of industrial dye, methylene blue, under dark, sunlight, and UV irradiation, and their recyclability and reusability were also assessed. Besides, the effect of pH, concentration of NPs, and dye on degradability was also analyzed. The cubical‐shaped NPs demonstrated superior degradation of ~70% under UV irradiation than the spherical ones (<50%). The antibacterial activities of both NPs were also examined, and cubical‐shaped NPs were found to exhibit superior antimicrobial potential (zone of inhibition [ZOI]: 25.75 ± 0.25, 18.83 ± 0.76, 15.75 ± 0.66, and 15.75 ± 0.25 mm) in comparison with the spherical ones (ZOI: 19.41 ± 0.94, 14.25 ± 0.66, 12.58 ± 1.01, and 9.91 ± 1.01 nm) for Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Bacillus subtilis, and Staphylococcus aureus respectively with reduced growth and viable count. This difference in performance may be attributed to the higher surface areas of cubical‐shaped NPs and higher content of oxygen vacancies. The results presented in this study suggest that cubical NPs are excellent candidates for treating industrial wastewater with greater reproducibility. Moreover, they can be used as active growth inhibitors against different microorganisms and thus can be extremely useful in developing medical devices and to design various antimicrobial systems. To examine how changes in relative national prices affect innovation input, this paper studies the impact of changes in industry‐specific effective real exchange rates on industrial R&D expenditures in Korea. In particular, it explores the heterogeneous responses of industries with different export intensities. Employing dynamic panel data estimation techniques, the results suggest that among industries with medium levels of export intensity a lagged depreciation in industry‐specific effective real exchange rate leads to a decline in contemporaneous industry‐level R&D expenditures. However, this adverse effect is insignificant for industries that either mostly serve the domestic markets or that are heavily engaged in foreign markets. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: A sensitive, simple and rapid QuEChERS extraction method and liquid chromatography equipped with triple quadrupole mass spectrometry (LC‐MS/MS) were used to determine 42 pesticides in dates. Acidified acetonitrile and citrate buffer salts were used to extract re‐hydrated samples. Acceptable validation performances were achieved, i.e. recovery range of 70−120% and RSD values ≤20% for 42 analytes at three different concentrations:100, 50 and 10 μg/kg. This method was used to analyse 200 date fruit samples (var. Sukkari) collected from different large markets in the Al‐Qassim region in Saudi Arabia. Pesticide residues were detected in 36 (18%) of the date fruits samples, and 15 samples (7.5%) exceeded the maximum residue levels. The ruggedness test results showed that this method is robust and suitable for the determination of pesticide residues in dates. Additionally, the results showed that the monitored dates did not have a health impact on consumers in Saudi Arabia during the study period. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Multinational firms are increasingly sending their innovative tasks abroad. This article examines whether offshoring research and development, design, and engineering activities provides any gains in terms of firm-level innovation output. The effects of trade in innovative tasks on the probability of firms being innovative and the share of innovative product sales in total turnover are examined using an instrumental variable approach. The data in use come from a recent survey, which provides cross-section observations for more than 14,750 firms in seven European countries. The results suggest that those firms that offshore their innovative activities are 60% more likely to successfully innovate. Also, offshoring innovative activities increases the share of innovative product sales in total turnover up to 35%. Furthermore, firms in this sample appear to gain from trade in innovative tasks when such trade is in product innovation but not when such trade is in process innovation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Neurodegeneration is the progressive loss of neuronal structure and function, which ultimately leads to neurological disorders such as Alzheimer's disease (AD), Parkinson's disease (PD), multiple sclerosis, and Huntington's disease. Even after the recent significant advances in neurobiology, the above-mentioned disorders continue to haunt the global population. Several studies have suggested the role of specific environmental and genetic risk factors associated with these disorders. However, the exact mechanism associated with the progression of these disorders still needs to be elucidated. In the recent years, sophisticated research has revealed interesting association of prominent neurodegenerative disorders such as AD and PD with chronic diseases such as cancer, diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases. Several common molecular mechanisms such as generation of free radicals, oxidative DNA damage, aberrations in mitochondrial DNA, and dysregulation of apoptosis have been highlighted as possible points of connection. The perinatal environment influences stress responses in the long-term, as does body composition. Male rats suckled in large litters, where they have reduced access to milk and attention from the dam, are less anxious and have attenuated hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal ( HPA) axis responses to stress compared to rats from control litters. In the present study, we investigated whether this early-life environment can also ameliorate anxiety and HPA axis function in rats prone to be stress-sensitive. We conducted these experiments in male rats from control litters (n = 12) or large litters (n = 20). Half were given 24 h of maternal separation on postnatal day 10 to induce HPA axis hyperactivity; the remainder staying undisturbed with their dam. When the rats reached adulthood, we examined behavioural indices of anxiety (elevated plus maze) and depression ( Porsolt's forced swim test) under basal conditions and after 15 min of restraint stress. We also examined neuronal activation in the paraventricular nucleus of the hypothalamus ( PVN) as an index of HPA axis function. Being suckled in a large litter led to a significantly attenuated PVN response to stress in adulthood. Maternal separation strongly exacerbated the stress-induced increase in PVN neuronal activation in control rats but did not affect the PVN response in large-litter rats. Immobility in the forced swim after restraint was also exacerbated in neonatally maternally separated control rats but not in those from large litters. Our findings show that being suckled in large litters mitigates the effects of early-life stress on HPA axis function and indices of depression in the rat. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Issue Addressed: Organised sport provides an important setting for health promotion. Peak sporting organisations have a role in assisting and overseeing sports clubs, including providing funding opportunities. As such, sponsorship of these organisations may influence the funding of community sport. This study aimed to describe the nature and scope of peak sporting organisations' sponsorship, and particularly food and beverage company sponsors.Methods: An analysis of national and state sporting organisations'websites for the nine most popular sports for children and from four Australian states and territories was conducted using a structured survey tool. Information collected included the number and type of sponsors and sponsorship policies.The nature of food and beverage sponsors was defined as more healthy or less healthy using criteria from a Delphi survey.Results: 443 sponsors were identified across 55 websites. Overall, 9% of sponsors were food companies and 3% were alcohol manufacturers. The majority of food companies (63%) and alcohol manufacturers (100%) did not meet criteria as healthy sponsors.Conclusions: Sponsorship of peak sporting organisations is widespread and consists of a relatively high proportion of alcohol manufacturers and food companies, some of which produce products considered to be unhealthy.This sponsorship may influence community sport through sponsored sporting programs or by indicating sponsors' acceptability. The present work investigated interactions between TRPC1/C5 and TRPC6 cation channel activities evoked by angiotensin II (Ang II) in native rabbit mesenteric artery vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs). In low intracellular Ca2+ buffering conditions (0.1 m m BAPTA), 1 n m and 10 n m Ang II activated both 2 pS TRPC1/C5 channels and 15-45 pS TRPC6 channels in the same outside-out patches. However, increasing Ang II to 100 n m abolished TRPC6 activity but further increased TRPC1/C5 channel activity. Comparison of individual patches revealed an inverse relationship between TRPC1/C5 and TRPC6 channel activity suggesting that TRPC1/C5 inhibits TRPC6 channel activity. Inclusion of anti-TRPC1 and anti-TRPC5 antibodies, raised against intracellular epitopes, in the patch pipette solution blocked TRPC1/C5 channel currents but potentiated by about six-fold TRPC6 channel activity evoked by 1-100 n m Ang II in outside-out patches. Bath application of T1E3, an anti-TRPC1 antibody raised against an extracellular epitope, also increased Ang II-evoked TRPC6 channel activity. With high intracellular Ca2+ buffering conditions (10 m m BAPTA), 10 n m Ang II-induced TRPC6 channel activity was increased by about five-fold compared to channel activity with low Ca2+ buffering. In addition, increasing intracellular Ca2+ levels ([Ca2+]i) at the cytosolic surface inhibited 10 n m Ang II-evoked TRPC6 channel activity in inside-out patches. Moreover, in zero external Ca2+ (0 [Ca2+]o) 100 n m Ang II induced TRPC6 channel activity in outside-out patches. Pre-treatment with the PKC inhibitor, chelerythrine, markedly increased TRPC6 channel activity evoked by 1-100 n m Ang II and blocked the inhibitory action of [Ca2+]i on TRPC6 channel activity. Co-immunoprecipitation studies shows that Ang II increased phosphorylation of TRPC6 proteins which was inhibited by chelerythrine, 0 [Ca2+]o and the anti-TRPC1 antibody T1E3. These results show that TRPC6 channels evoked by Ang II are inhibited by TRPC1/C5-mediated Ca2+ influx and stimulation of PKC, which phosphorylates TRPC6 subunits. Background: The mucopolysaccharidoses (MPSs), a group of genetic lysosomal storage disorders, are associated with significant morbidity. Secondarily to specific associated anatomical abnormalities, MPS is associated with sleep disordered breathing (SDB), specifically obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) that may confer additional morbidity. Few studies have examined SDB in children with MPS using full polysomnography (PSG) and thus the exact prevalence and severity of SDB is unknown. Further, successful treatments for SDB in this population have not been explored. Objectives: This study evaluated both SDB and the efficacy of treatments offered to children with MPS using PSG data. Patients and methods: A retrospective chart review was conducted on all children with MPS and a history of suspected OSA who were referred to the Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto. Both baseline and follow up treatment PSG data were analysed. PSG data recorded included obstructive apnoea-hypopnoea index (OAHI) and central apnoea index (CAI). Results: Fourteen patients (10 male) underwent a baseline PSG. Three of 14 children on ERT were excluded from the main analyses. The median (range) baseline parameters of the population (n=11) were recorded. The age was 5.2 years (0.8–17.8) and the body mass index (BMI) was 19.9 (13.7– 22.2). The OAHI was 6.6 (0.0–54.8); the CAI was 0.6 (0.0– 2.6). Seven of 11 (64%) had evidence for OSA and 3/7 children were classified as having severe OSA (OAHI>10). Of these, 5/7 children underwent treatment for OSA with 3/ 5 children showing a significant reduction in their OAHI. Further, the 2 patients on ERT therapy with OSA were also both successfully treated. Conclusions: Children with MPS have a high prevalence of significant OSA and thus should be carefully screened for OSA using full polysomnography and treated accordingly. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In order to monitor CsA serum levels after SCT, trough levels (C0) are widely used. The aim of this study was to estimate the population and individual PK parameters for patients receiving intravenous CsA after SCT. In 27 pediatric patients after SCT receiving CsA (3 mg/kg/day) every 12 h, a total of 289 CsA concentrations was obtained. To describe the PK parameters of CsA, a two-compartment model with first order elimination was used. Covariate analysis identified body weight, age, and the co-administration with itraconazole and tobramycine as factors influencing the Cl. The statistical comparison of AUC, trough level, and C2 indicates a correlation between AUC and C2, but no correlation between the AUC and C0, r = 0.24 (p = 0.146) vs. r = 0.526 (p = 0.000692), respectively. Our results underscore the fact that CsA trough levels do not reflect the drug exposure in patients receiving intravenous CsA after SCT. By contrast, CsA blood levels measured 2–6 h after CsA infusion showed a better correlation with the AUC. Our data provide new information to optimize the balancing act between GvHD-prophylaxis, graft vs. leukemia effect, and CsA side-effects after SCT. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Myasthenia gravis (MG) is a rare autoimmune disease of the neuromuscular junction. MG has been shown to be associated with many HLA antigens in different populations. Here we have analysed the frequency of HLA-A, B, DR and DQ in a group of Saudi MG patients and compared their results to a group of healthy controls. MG in Saudi patients is found to be associated with HLA-A*23, B*08, B*18, DRB1*16 and DRB1*13. The strongest association was with HLA-B*08, which was associated with young age at onset and female gender. Our results are in line with other published results from around the world and warrant fine mapping of the area using microsatellite to map the disease gene. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Store-operated channels (SOCs) are plasma membrane Ca2+-permeable cation channels which are activated by agents that deplete intracellular Ca2+ stores. In smooth muscle SOCs are involved in contraction, gene expression, cell growth and proliferation. Single channel recording has demonstrated that SOCs with different biophysical properties are expressed in smooth muscle indicating diverse molecular identities. Moreover it is apparent that several gating mechanisms including calmodulin, protein kinase C and lysophospholipids are involved in SOC activation. Evidence is accumulating that TRPC proteins are important components of SOCs in smooth muscle. More recently Orai and STIM proteins have been proposed to underlie the well-described calcium-release-activated current ( ICRAC) in non-excitable cells but at present there is little information on the role of Orai and STIM proteins in smooth muscle. In addition it is likely that different TRPC subunits coassemble as heterotetrameric structures to form smooth muscle SOCs. In this brief review we summarize the diverse properties and gating mechanisms of SOCs in smooth muscle. We propose that the heterogeneity of the properties of these conductances in smooth muscle results from the formation of heterotetrameric TRPC structures in different smooth muscle preparations. In the present work we used patch pipette techniques to study the properties of a novel Ca2+-permeable cation channel activated by the potent coronary vasoconstrictor endothelin-1 (ET-1) in freshly dispersed rabbit coronary artery myocytes. With cell-attached recording bath application of 10 nm ET-1 evoked cation channel currents ( Icat) with subconductance states of about 18, 34 and 51 and 68 pS, and a reversal potential of 0 mV. ET-1 evoked channel activity when extracellular Ca2+ was the charge carrier, illustrating significant Ca2+ permeability. ET-1-induced responses were inhibited by the ETA receptor antagonist BQ123 and the phospholipase C (PLC) inhibitor U73122. The diacylglycerol analogue 1-oleoyl-2-acetyl- sn-glycerol (OAG) also stimulated Icat, but the protein kinase C (PKC) inhibitor chelerythrine did not inhibit either the OAG- or ET-1-induced Icat. Inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate (IP3) did not activate Icat, but greatly potentiated the response to OAG and this effect was blocked by heparin. Bath application of anti-TRPC3 and anti-TRPC7 antibodies to inside-out patches markedly inhibited ET-1-evoked Icat, but antibodies to TRPC1, C4, C5 and C6 had no effect. Immunocytochemical studies demonstrated preferential TRPC7 expression in the plasmalemma, whereas TRPC3 was distributed throughout the myocyte, and moreover co-localization of TRPC3 and TRPC7 signals was observed at, or close to, the plasma membrane. Flufenamic acid, Gd3+, La3+ and extracellular Ca2+ inhibited Icat with IC50 values of 2.45 μm, 3.8 μm, 7.36 μm and 22 μm, respectively. These results suggest that in rabbit coronary artery myocytes ET-1 evokes a Ca2+-permeable non-selective cation channel with properties similar to TRPC3 and TRPC7, and indicates that these proteins may be important components of this conductance. Angiotensin II (Ang II) is a potent vasoconstrictor with an important role in controlling blood pressure; however, there is little information on cellular mechanisms underlying Ang II-evoked vasoconstrictor responses. The aim of the present study is to investigate the effect of Ang II on cation conductances in freshly dispersed rabbit mesenteric artery myocytes at the single-channel level using patch-clamp techniques. In cell-attached patches, bath application of low concentrations of Ang II (1 nm) activated cation channel currents ( Icat1) with conductances states of about 15, 30 and 45 pS. At relatively high concentrations, Ang II (100 nm) inhibited Icat1 but evoked another cation channel ( Icat2) with a conductance of approximately 2 pS. Ang II-evoked Icat1 and Icat2 were inhibited by the AT1 receptor antagonist losartan and the phospholipase C (PLC) inhibitor U73122. The diacylglycerol (DAG) lipase inhibitor RHC80267 initially induced Icat1 which was subsequently inhibited to reveal Icat2. The DAG analogue 1-oleoyl-2-acetyl- sn-glycerol (1 μm) activated Icat1 and Icat2 but inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate did not evoke either conductance. The protein kinase C (PKC) inhibitor chelerythrine (3 μm) potentiated Ang II-evoked Icat1 and inhibited Icat2 whereas the PKC activator phorbol-12,13-dibutyrate (1 μm) reduced Ang II-induced Icat1 but activated Icat2. Moreover in cell-attached patches pretreated with chelerythrine, application of 100 nm Ang II activated Icat1. These data indicate that PKC inhibits Icat1 but stimulates Icat2. Agents that deplete intracellular Ca2+ stores also activated cation channel currents with similar properties to Icat2. Bath application of anti-TRPC6 and anti-TRPC1 antibodies to inside-out patches inhibited Icat1 and Icat2, respectively. Also flufenamic acid and zero external Ca2+ concentration, respectively, potentiated and reduced Ang II-evoked Icat1. Immunocytochemical studies showed TRPC6 and TRPC1 expression with TRPC6 preferentially distributed in the plasma membrane and TRPC1 expression located throughout the myocyte. These results indicate that Ang II activates two distinct cation conductances in mesenteric artery myocytes by stimulation of AT1 receptors linked to PLC. Icat1 is activated by DAG via a PKC-independent mechanism whereas Icat2 involves DAG acting via a PKC-dependent pathway. Higher concentrations of Ang II inhibit Icat1 by activating an inhibitory effect of PKC. Int J Dent Hygiene3, 2005: 83–87Taani DQ, El-Qaderi SS, Abu Alhaija ESJ:Dental anxiety in children and its relationship to dental caries and gingival conditionThe aim of this study was to determine the levels of dental anxiety, dental caries and gingivitis among 12–15-year-old schoolchildren, in Irbid Governorate/northern Jordan, and to evaluate the correlation between these variables. Two schools were selected by a simple random method from each of the five geographic areas in Irbid Governorate. All children (1021), from the 10 selected schools, who participated in this study completed a questionnaire modified from Kleinknecht's Dental Fear Survey (DFS questionnaire). Children underwent oral examination for dental caries and gingival condition, using Decayed, Missing and Filled Teeth (DMFT) Index and Löe and Silness Gingival Index (GI), respectively. Results of this survey showed that the prevalence of low to moderate‘general dental fear’ among the study population was 43% while that of‘high dental fear’ was 10%. The self-reported‘general fear of dental treatment’ was higher among girls than boys. Fear of specific stimuli (pain) was the most common source of dental fear. The sight and sensation of the anaesthetic needle and the sight, sound and sensation of the drill were rated the most fear-eliciting stimuli. The mean DMFT (2.89) and GI (1.80) of boys was not significantly different from the DMFT (3.37) and GI (1.53) of girls (P > 0.05). Spearman's correlation test demonstrated no association between‘general dental fear’ and dental caries (r = 0.06) or gingivitis (r = 0.007). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Date fruit and pollen antigens share a number of cross-reactive epitopes. Date pollen has been shown to cross-react with antigens from Artemisia, cultivated rye (Secale cereale), Timothy grass (Phleum pratense), Sydney golden wattle (Acacia longifolia) and Bermuda grass (Cynodon dactylon) pollen. The present study was carried out to examine any cross-reactivities between date palm polypeptides and antigens of some common foods and vegetables that have been implicated in the oral allergy syndrome (OAS). Because most of such cross-reactivities in other allergens are attributable to the presence of carbohydrate chains and profilin, their role was also investigated. Methods: Fresh extracts of 20 common fruits and vegetables were prepared. Putative date profilins were isolated by affinity chromatography using a poly L-proline column. Date fruit extracts were digested by various endoglycosidases and the immunoglobulin (Ig)E binding of the postdigest products was assessed in immunoblots. Rabbit antisera to whole date fruit extracts, Timothy grass profilin and putative date profilins, as well as human sera from date sensitive individuals were used in immunoblotting, ELISA and in inhibition experiments. Results: IgG ELISA and immunoblot results with the different rabbit antisera and date-sensitive atopic sera showed several antigenic cross-reactivities and similar cross-reactivities were seen with birch, date and timothy grass profilins. IgE ELISA and immunoblot experiments with pooled date sensitive human sera showed a range of cross-reactivities with some food extracts. A number of the IgE cross-reactivities could be inhibited after preabsorption of pooled sera with date extracts. The dimensional stability of tissue conditioners characterizes the ability of the materials to yield accurate functional impressions of oral mucosa. This study evaluated the linear dimensional changes with time of six tissue conditioners (COE Comfort, FITT, GC Soft‐Liner, Hydro‐Cast, SR‐Ivoseal and Visco‐Gel) using a travelling microscope, and relationship between these changes and weight changes. The absorption and solubility of these materials were also determined. The percentage changes in dimension and weight in water storage were measured at 2 (baseline), 8 and 24 h, and 2, 4, 7, 14 and 21 days after specimen preparation. All materials except SR‐Ivoseal exhibited shrinkage and weight loss during water storage, whilst SR‐Ivoseal exhibited expansion and an increase in weight. The percentage solubility for all materials except SR‐Ivoseal was higher than the percentage absorption. A positive linear relationship was found between the percentage changes in linear dimension and those in weight (r=0·797 − 0·986, P < 0·05). Water absorption and solubility of the materials were found to be associated with dimensional changes. The results suggest that the period recommended for forming functional impressions would be 24 h after insertion in the mouth. Medifoxamine is a new monoamine re-uptake inhibiting antidepressant drug. Twelve volunteers received 100 mg by i.v. infusion over 15 min and 500 mg by mouth fasting. The treatments were given 1 week apart in a randomised cross-over design. Venous blood samples (10 ml) were taken at intervals for 24 h for h.p.l.c. measurement of serum medifoxamine. A biexponential decline of serum medifoxamine concentration was observed after intravenous administration in all subjects and similar terminal elimination half-lives were observed following both routes, indicating that oral absorption is not rate-limiting. Medifoxamine is a novel monoamine re-uptake inhibiting antidepressive drug which preferentially inhibits dopamine reuptake. In human volunteer studies it has been found to reduce significantly intraocular pressure after single oral doses of 300-1000 mg, and to produce a small but statistically significant miosis.
