Abstract: Recent climatic warming and associated glacial retreat may have a large impact on sediment release and transfer in Alpine river basins. Concurrently, the sediment transport capacity of many European Alpine streams is affected by hydropower exploitation, notably where flow is abstracted but the sediment supply downstream is maintained. Here, we investigate the combined effects of climate change and flow abstraction on morphodynamics and sediment transfer in the Borgne River, Switzerland. From photogrammetrically derived historical Digital Elevation Models (DEMs), we find considerable net aggradation of the braided river bed (up to 5 m) since the onset of flow abstraction in 1963. Reaches responded through bed level steepening which was strongest in the upper most reach. Widespread aggradation however did not commence until the onset of glacier retreat in the late 1980s and the dry and warm years of the early 1990s. Upstream flow intake data shows that this aggradation coincided with an increase in sediment supply, although aggradation accounts for no more than 25% of supplied material. The remainder was transferred through the studied reaches. Estimations of bed load transport capacity indicate that flow abstraction reduces transport capacity by 1–2 orders of magnitude. While residual transport rates vary with morphological evolution, they are in the same order of magnitude as the sediment supply rates, which is why significant transport remains. However, the reduction in transport capacity makes the system more sensitive to short‐term (annual) changes in climate‐driven hydrological variability and climate‐induced changes in intake management and sediment delivery rates. Megafan conglomerates of foreland basins chronicle the combined effect of palaeoclimate conditions, tectonic processes and the flux and granulometric composition of the supplied sediment. However, the architecture of these deposits is seldom uniquely compatible with a single driving force. This problem is illustrated here with a field-based analysis of the ca. 30-20 Ma-old Napf deposits in the north Alpine foreland basin which are coeval with a substantial global warming of ca. 6°C during the Late Oligocene. The observed larger grain sizes and a change in fluvial style from wandering to braided could be explained climatically by a shift to drier conditions with sparse vegetation, but would have resulted in less than 400 m of additional accommodation space during the 1 Ma duration of change. Accordingly, a climate scenario alone is also not compatible with rapid sediment accumulation rates of >1000 m Ma−1 recorded at Napf, or with a lack of any remarkable shifts in the Froude number, which would be expected if water discharge patterns changed substantially. Alternatively, flexural downwarping in response to a tectonic pulse could account for the increase in grain size and the change in fluvial style from wandering (more distal facies) to braided (proximal equivalent). However, a third driving force is required to explain the contemporaneous backstepping of the distal gravel front and progradation of the proximal braided facies. We suggest that the erosional hinterland steepened in response to an inferred tectonic pulse, resulting in a more widespread exposure of lithologies with higher erosional resistance, as inferred from an increasing contribution of crystalline constituents in the clast suites. Such a change would result in a larger D50 and a higher clast size variability in the supplied sediment, which in turn would contribute to the observed change from wandering to braided and the related shift in depositional systems. This study highlights the importance of tectonic processes and the role of changing surface lithologies in the source area for explaining variations in megafan construction even in the light of substantial palaeoclimate shift. The evolution of the Central Alpine deformation front (Subalpine Molasse) and its undeformed foreland is recently debated because of their role for deciphering the late orogenic evolution of the Alps. Its latest exhumation history is poorly understood due to the lack of late Miocene to Pliocene sediments. We constrain the late Miocene to Pliocene history of this transitional zone with apatite fission track and (U-Th)/He data. We used laser ablation inductively coupled mass spectrometry for apatite fission track dating and compare this method with previously published and unpublished external detector method fission track data. Two investigated sections across tectonic slices show that the Subalpine Molasse was tectonically active after the onset of folding of the Jura Mountains. This is much younger than hitherto assumed. Thrusting occurred at 10, 8, 6-5 Ma and potentially thereafter. This is contemporaneous with reported exhumation of the External Crystalline Massifs in the central Alps. The Jura Mountains and the Subalpine Molasse used the same detachments as the External Crystalline Massifs and are therefore kinematically coupled. Estimates on the amount of shortening and thrust displacement corroborate this idea. We argue that the tectonic signal is related to active shortening during the late stage of orogenesis. The article presents a study which examines the terrestrial cosmogenic nuclide (TCN) impact in determining the rates of the catchment-wide denudation in Rio Lluta catchment in northern Chile. It discusses the utilization of TCN samples which are split for noble gas analysis and degasses through step-wise heating. The result shows the contrast of the palaeodenuation rates with the previous TCN-derived erosion rates from the bedrock exposures particularly in the lower river course.

This paper gives a synoptic view of the Cenozoic evolution of the Swiss Alps and their northern foreland basin. In this orogen, deep crustal processes (subduction, nappe stacking, underplating, and exhumation) are intimately linked with surface processes (surface uplift, erosion, basin formation, and basin-axis migration). Within the foreland basin the spatial pattern of subsidence and alluvial fan construction suggests that an increase in flexure of the foreland plate and the creation of relief in the orogen migrated from east to west in the course of collision. In the orogen itself, crustal thickening involved lower crust of the Adriatic margin in the east and the European margin in the west. Exhumation of upper crustal units occurred earlier in the east as compared with the west. An Adriatic mantle wedge (the Ivrea body) and its associated wedge of lower crustal material are identified as an extra lithospheric load which contributed to downward flexure of the European plate. As a result of enhanced subsidence of the foreland plate, relief was generated presumably in order to adjust to critical taper geometry. It appears, therefore, that the westward motion of the Adriatic wedge ultimately caused the contemporaneous westward propagation of the location of enhanced rates of alluvial fan construction. Coeval strike-slip and N-S convergence juxtaposed the Adriatic wedge sequentially to different European upper crustal units which resulted in different styles of crustal structure and evolution along strike within the orogen. [sup 40]Ar/[sup 39]Ar single-grain laserprobe dating of detrital white micas from early Oligocene to middle Miocene (31–14 Ma) sedimentary rocks of the central Swiss Molasse basin reveals three distinct clusters of cooling ages for the hinterland. Two Palaeozoic age clusters reflect cooling after the Variscan orogeny with only limited reheating during the Alpine orogeny. The third Tertiary age cluster reflecting late Alpine cooling is restricted to sediments younger than 20 Myr old. Micas with cooling ages < 30 Myr are interpreted to originate from the footwall of the Simplon detachment fault, thus representing formerly exposed upper levels of the present-day Lepontine metamorphic dome. Erosion of these levels is reflected by an increase of low-grade metamorphic lithic grains in the sandstones. This interpretation puts constraints on the timing of exhumation as well as on the evolution of the drainage pattern of the Central Alps. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
