The Global Modeling and Assimilation Office (GMAO) has recently released a new version of the Goddard Earth Observing System (GEOS) Subseasonal to Seasonal prediction (S2S) system, GEOS‐S2S‐2, that represents a substantial improvement in performance and infrastructure over the previous system. The system is described here in detail, and results are presented from forecasts, climate equillibrium simulations, and data assimilation experiments. The climate or equillibrium state of the atmosphere and ocean showed a substantial reduction in bias relative to GEOS‐S2S‐1. The GEOS‐S2S‐2 coupled reanalysis also showed substantial improvements, attributed to the assimilation of along‐track absolute dynamic topography. The forecast skill on subseasonal scales showed a much improved prediction of the Madden‐Julian Oscillation in GEOS‐S2S‐2, and on a seasonal scale the tropical Pacific forecasts show substantial improvement in the east and comparable skill to GEOS‐S2S‐1 in the central Pacific. GEOS‐S2S‐2 anomaly correlations of both land surface temperature and precipitation were comparable to GEOS‐S2S‐1 and showed substantially reduced root‐mean‐square error of surface temperature. The remaining issues described here are being addressed in the development of GEOS‐S2S Version 3, and with that system GMAO will continue its tradition of maintaining a state‐of‐the‐art seasonal prediction system for use in evaluating the impact on seasonal and decadal forecasts of assimilating newly available satellite observations, as well as evaluating additional sources of predictability in the Earth system through the expanded coupling of the Earth system model and assimilation components. The Goddard Earth Observing System version 5 (GEOS‐5) global climate model with a 50‐km horizontal resolution is forced by observed sea surface temperature (SST) to examine the fidelity of the seasonal‐mean and inter‐annual variation of tropical cyclones (TCs) in the western North Pacific (WNP) and the North Atlantic (NATL). The standard Relaxed Arakawa Schubert (RAS) deep convection scheme is modified to improve the representation of TCs, where the scheme implements a stochastic limit of the cumulus entrainment rate. The modification drives mid‐ and upper‐tropospheric cooling and low‐ to mid‐tropospheric drying in the background state, which tends to increase atmospheric instability. This enables the model to increase convective variability on an intra‐seasonal timescale and improve the simulation of intense storms. Five‐member ensemble runs with the modified RAS scheme for 12 years (1998–2009) exhibit realistic spatial distributions in the climatological‐mean TC development area and their pathways over WNP and NATL. The GCM is able to reproduce the inter‐annual variation of accumulated cyclone energy (ACE) by prescribing yearly varying observed SST even though the individual TC intensity is still underpredicted. A sensitivity of TC activity to El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) phase is also reproduced realistically over WNP in terms of the spatial pattern changes in the main development region and TC pathways. However, the model exhibits a notable deficiency in NATL in reproducing the observed inter‐annual variation of TC activity and the sensitivity to the ENSO. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study examines the influence of the Madden-Julian Oscillation ( MJO) on tropical storm ( TS) activity in the western North Pacific, using observations and GEOS-5 simulations at 50-km horizontal resolution. While GEOS-5 produces an MJO of faster propagation and weaker amplitude, it nevertheless reproduces the observed modulation of TS activity by the MJO with the highest TS genesis and increased track density in the active phases of MJO. The study suggests that the simulation of the sub-seasonal variability of TS activity could be improved by improving the simulations of the MJO in climate models. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
