• The effectiveness of multidisciplinary stroke rehabilitation may be enhanced by nurses and therapists adopting a single consistent approach to the positioning and mobilizing of patients. As patients can spend as little as 4% of the waking day receiving ‘therapy’ there is considerable potential for a more dynamic nursing intervention, which may contribute to improving patient care. • We aimed to investigate whether physiotherapists could step back from direct patient treatment in order to participate in a structured training programme for nurses involved with patients recovering from stroke on an established elderly care rehabilitation ward in a district general hospital. • Qualitative methods were used within a participatory action research framework to describe the development process and content of the training programme. Nursing staff, physiotherapists and their respective managers were interviewed to identify perceived training needs. This informed the structure and content of the training course and allowed insight into interprofessional working. • We found that nursing staff were highly motivated to undertake rehabilitation training and to develop a more consistent interdisciplinary approach. A course of six theoretical and practical sessions, on normal movement, positioning and transferring patients, the upper limb, and gait re-education, was delivered to participating nursing staff over a five month period. This was supplemented by practical, informal individual patient/physiotherapist/nursing sessions. Details are provided for those wishing to replicate the course elsewhere. • In conclusion, nursing staff, physiotherapists and physiotherapy tutors participated fully in the establishment, development, delivery and review of the course. As participants in the project became committed to its aims, creative solutions were found to the practical problems which arose. The kinetics of uptake of sucrose, glucose and fructose by Phytophthora palmivora are all biphasic. At low concentrations, glucose and fructose share a common, high-affinity, hexose carrier, and sucrose is probably hydrolyzed extracellularly at these concentrations before the transport of the resultant hexoses by this carrier. At higher concentrations, a low-affinity carrier may transport sucrose directly, but this carrier appears to have a higher affinity for glucose than sucrose. Activity of neutral invertase (β-D-fructofuranoside fructohydrolase) in both soluble and particulate (cell-wall) preparations is considerably in excess of the highest rates of sucrose uptake. A letter to the editor is presented regarding the case of a 55-year-old Jehovah's Witness who was diagnosed with adrenocortical carcinoma.

The article reports on the first case of primary fallopian tube carcinoma (PFTC) which was diagnosed by routine screening using liquid-based cytology (LBC) in a 63-year-old asymptomatic postmenopausal woman. The woman was referred following a routine call-recall Surepath (LBC) sample, which showed dyskaryotic glandular cells suggesting carcinoma of the endometrium. She was offered ovarian cancer type chemotherapy and has since started single agent carboplatin chemotherapy.

Objectives/hypothesis: The incidence of human papillomavirus (HPV)-driven disease beyond the oropharynx varies greatly in the reported literature., Study Design: Case series., Methods: Two hundred twenty-one samples were strictly classified to the subsites of oral cavity, larynx, or hypopharynx at the time of primary surgery. Formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded samples were subjected to a validated, tiered, diagnostic algorithm of p16 immunohistochemistry, high-risk HPV in situ hybridization, and quantitative polymerase chain reaction for HPV E6 DNA. An additional 60 oropharyngeal cases acted as an internal biological control., Results: An incidence of 4% of HPV-driven cases was observed across the subsites outside the oropharynx compared to 70% of tumors confined within it., Conclusions: This is the first reporting of a broad range of nonoropharyngeal HPV rates using this validated diagnostic algorithm.
