Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the abrasive and cleaning effects of melamine foam and other cleaning agents on the surfaces of composite resin artificial tooth specimens., Materials and Methods: A stained composite resin artificial tooth in a used denture was cleaned using a denture brush and melamine foam, and the stain removal effect was evaluated macroscopically. Next, 5 types of cleaning material (fourfold-compression melamine foam, MEL; brush with water, BRU; denture dentifrice without abrasive, POL; denture dentifrice with abrasive, TAF; conventional dentifrice, AQU) and 15 plate-shaped specimens made of composite resin for artificial teeth were used for wear tests. The surface roughness was measured using a laser scanning microscope. Furthermore, the surface properties were observed using a digital microscope. Surface roughness data were analyzed by two-way ANOVA followed by Tukey's test., Results: Artificial tooth stains that could not be removed by brushing became removable using melamine foam. With regard to surface roughness in the context of the wear test, significant differences were not indicated between MEL and POL, whereas BRU-, TAF-, and AQU-treated specimens showed significantly increased surface roughness (p < 0.05). In the comparison among the cleaning materials, TAF- and AQU-treated specimens showed significantly rougher surfaces than those treated with MEL, BRU, and POL (p < 0.05)., Conclusions: Macroscopic observations suggest that melamine foam would be effective for the removal of stains on composite resin artificial teeth. Traces of wear were not observed in specimens treated with melamine foam and the denture dentifrice not containing abrasives. Dentine hypersensitivity occurs when patent dentinal tubules are subjected to external stimuli, with pain being reduced by products that occlude tubules. This study compared the efficacy of a recently developed arginine-containing dentifrice, two established strontium-based products, and a fluoride control to occlude tubules when subjected to acid challenge. Dentine specimens with patent tubules were divided into four groups that were treated with a slurry consisting of one of the pastes mixed with stimulated human saliva. Treated specimens were further subdivided and soaked in 0.3% citric acid for 10 s, 30 s, 2 min, 5 min or 10 min. Tubule occlusion on representative scanning electron microscopy images was scored by blind review. All three desensitizing pastes offered good tubule occlusion, which was maintained to varying degrees following acidic challenge. After immersion in acid for 10 and 30 s, the strontium acetate- and arginine-containing pastes almost fully occluded tubules, but only the strontium acetate paste retained this level of occlusion after immersion in acid for 2 min, with strong statistical evidence that this paste occluded more tubules than the other pastes after immersion in acid for 2 or 5 min. The co-crystal structure of N-methylpiperidine betaine with N-methylpiperidine betaine hexafluorosilicate represents an unusual case of a salt co-crystal with a high Z' value (3), unexpected conformational variability, and with nearly 50% of its contents disordered. The betaine units from the salt and co-crystal formers are paired into several homoconjugated dimers via very short, linear O(-)...H(+)...O(-) bridges. These hydrogen bonds are the dominating interactions in the co-crystal structure, in variance with the simple hexafluorosilicate salt, which has a structure governed by COOH...F hydrogen bonds. The SiF(2-)(6) anion in the co-crystal structure has only C-H...F interactions with the betaine units. The zwitterion:cation:anion stoichiometry is 3:3:1.5. Some of the betaine units display disorder, but each case is different. One of the SiF(2-)(6) anions is ordered while possessing exact crystallographic symmetry. The other one is disordered in a general position. In addition, there are three water molecules in the crystal structure. One is fully ordered, one has an H atom disordered in two positions and the third one occupies two alternative positions with unequal populations.

Purpose: Titanium dentures have recently increased in popularity. A decrease in the retentive force of the titanium clasps has frequently been observed. This study investigated the effect of retentive arm design and chemical polishing of titanium clasps., Materials and Methods: Four Akers clasps with 0.25-mm and 0.5-mm undercuts were designed so that the retentive arms were placed at 1/2 and 2/3 of the undercut area. Wax patterns were fabricated and invested in phosphate-bonded Al2O3/LiAl SiO6. They were cast with CP Ti Grade 2, CP Ti Grade 3, and Ti-6Al-7Nb using an argon gas-pressure casting unit (Autocast HC-III). After sandblasting, the castings were chemically treated with an HNO3/HF solution. The retentive force (N) was measured up to 10,000 insertion/removal times. The results (n = 5) were analyzed by ANOVA/Tukey's test (alpha= 0.05)., Results: The retentive forces significantly decreased with increasing immersion time in the HNO3/HF solution (p < 0.05). The retentive force of the 2/3 undercut was significantly greater than that of the 1/2 undercut (p < 0.05). Excluding the initial insertion/removal period of the 2/3 undercut, there were no significant differences among all the titanium metals tested (p > 0.05). As the number of insertion/removal times increased, the retentive force of the 2/3 undercut greatly decreased. The retentive force of the Ti-6Al-7Nb clasps for the 1/2 undercut decreased the least after 10,000 insertion/removal times., Conclusions: Chemical treatment for titanium clasps should be performed for 1-5 minutes due to the following factors: accuracy, surface roughness, surface structure, initial retention, and stability of retention. To maintain appropriate long-term retentive force, the retentive arms should be placed in the 1/2 undercut area of the abutment tooth.

In bis(2-carboxypyridinium) hexafluorosilicate, 2C(6)H(6)NO(2)+.SiF6(2-), (I), and bis(2-carboxyquinolinium) hexafluorosilicate dihydrate, 2C(10)H(8)NO(2)+.SiF6(2-).2H2O, (II), the Si atoms of the anions reside on crystallographic centres of inversion. Primary inter-ion interactions in (I) occur via strong N-H...F and O-H...F hydrogen bonds, generating corrugated layers incorporating [SiF6](2-) anions as four-connected net nodes and organic cations as simple links in between. In (II), a set of strong N-H...F, O-H...O and O-H...F hydrogen bonds, involving water molecules, gives a three-dimensional heterocoordinated rutile-like framework that integrates [SiF6](2-) anions as six-connected and water molecules as three-connected nodes. The carboxyl groups of the cation are hydrogen bonded to the water molecule [O...O = 2.5533 (13) A], while the N-H group supports direct bonding to the anion [N...F = 2.7061 (12) A].

The comparative efficacy of two alginate-containing anti-reflux preparations (Gaviscon, Algicon) was assessed in a single blind crossover study of 20 patients with gastro-oesophageal reflux disease. The clinical efficacy study was preceded by two studies in healthy volunteers to assess the intragastric effects of Algicon and Gaviscon by pH measurement, endoscopic visualization and gamma scintigraphy. Algicon and Gaviscon were shown to form a raft in the fasting and fed human stomach, with Algicon alone having a potent antacid effect below and within the raft. Both Algicon and Gaviscon liquids significantly reduced the frequency and severity of reflux symptoms from baseline when given at their recommended doses (10 ml and 20 ml four times daily, respectively). There were no significant differences between Algicon and Gaviscon, although 12 patients preferred Algicon (vs 5 for Gaviscon) for control of reflux symptoms. It was concluded that both Algicon and Gaviscon were effective for the symptomatic control of gastro-oesophageal reflux disease.
