Automobile and aviation industries require lightweight solutions in the suspension system to improve overall performance and payload capacity. This can be achieved by materials having high strength to weight ratio. Fiber composites, known for their lightweight and high strength, face a major issue of delamination, which shortens the lifespan of fiber‐reinforced polymer leaf springs. Current researchers are emphasizing the use of functionally graded materials as a promising alternative to tackle this problem. In the present work, a functionally graded leaf spring plate was fabricated using stir casting technique with five layered gradations in the mid portion. The amount of molten material required for each gradation was ensured using a novel experimental technique. On the other hand, the matrix and reinforcement have been adopted from the output of the analysis conducted using CES EduPack 2019 software. Low density and high fatigue strength were primary focal point for the consideration of matrix and reinforcement materials. Aluminium 7075 and boron carbide were considered as matrix and reinforcement materials respectively. For the first‐time, analysis of a decade long measurement of Black Carbon mass concentration (BC) was carried out at a representative central Indo‐Gangetic Plain (IGP) location, Varanasi (25.30°N, 83.03°E, 79 m asl), from 2009 to 2021 to understand its physical, optical, and radiative impacts. During the 13‐year study period, the daily BC mass concentration was found to vary between 0.07 and 46.23 μg m−3 (mean 9.18 ± 6.53 μg m−3) and showed a strong inter‐annual and intra‐annual variations. The inter‐annual variability of BC showed a significant decreasing trend (−0.47 μg m−3 yr−1), with a maximum during the post‐monsoon (−1.86 μg m−3 yr−1) and minimum during the pre‐monsoon season (−0.31 μg m−3 yr−1). The Black Carbon Aerosol Radiative Forcing (BC‐ARF) at the top of the atmosphere (BC‐ARFT), surface (BC‐ARFS), and within the atmosphere (BC‐ARFA) was found to be 10.3 ± 6.4, −30.1 ± 18.9, and 40.5 ± 25.2 W m−2, respectively. BC‐ARF also showed a strong inter‐annual variability with a decreasing trend for BC‐ARFT (−0.47 W m−2 yr−1) and BC‐ARFA (−1.94 W m−2 yr−1), while it showed an increasing trend for BC‐ARFS (1.33 W m−2 yr−1). Concentrated weighted trajectories (CWT) and potential source contribution function (PSCF) analyses were performed at the station to determine the potential source sectors and transport routes of BC aerosols. These analyses revealed that the long‐range source of BC at Varanasi originates from the upper and lower IGP, central highlands, southern peninsular region, Pakistan, and even from the Central East Asia region. Turbulent mixing within sub‐channels plays a crucial role in understanding the thermal hydraulics of reactor channels. It serves as an empirical parameter in sub‐channel analysis and has long been a challenge in the nuclear industry. Conducting experiments in this context is challenging due to the stringent requirement of maintaining pressure balance among sub‐channels to prevent convection effects. Fortunately, direct numerical simulation (DNS) is emerging as an invaluable tool for addressing this persistent issue. DNS enables the direct computation of turbulent mixing by analyzing fluctuating lateral velocities, offering a more profound understanding of the underlying phenomena. In this study, DNS was conducted at six Reynolds numbers ranging from 17,640 to 1.5 × 105 in pressurized water reactor (PWR) geometry to investigate the lateral mixing driven by turbulence. By studying intricate mechanisms governing the turbulent mixing, the valuable insights into reactor thermal performance and safety are provided. Furthermore, a correlation for turbulent mixing of energy based on the DNS data has been derived, enhancing our ability to model and predict this critical aspect of reactor behaviour. Additionally, this paper explores temperature fluctuations occurring at the fuel rod surface due to turbulence. The Wayand‐Nilambur granulite terrain in Kerala (India) is well‐known for vein‐type gold mineralization within the quartz veins. Based on the previous geological, petro‐physical and geophysical characteristics of Wayand‐Nilambur gold deposit, the integrated geophysical survey was carried out to delineate the favourable prospecting zones. In the present study, detailed ground geophysical surveys, that is, magnetic, electrical resistivity/chargeability surveys were carried out in an area of 2 km2 in Kattikallu and Kalkulam blocks to delineate the ore deposits in terms of depths and extensions through the structural shear zone, locate the anomalous sources and the geometry of the Au‐rich sulphide zone and its depth continuity in the subsurface. These surveys brought out prominent resistivity and chargeability zones over known magnetite‐quartz veins that are associated with low‐grade sulphide bands at the central part of the Kattikallu block. The prominent potential zone is characterized by strong bipolar magnetic anomalies over the quartz veins. Based on the 2D inversion of resistivity data, the resistivity low zone of order 80–600 Ω m and chargeability of 21–25 mV/V are observed at a depth range of 5–20 m. In Kalkulam block, the magnetic survey has also brought out high intensity anomaly zones over quartz veins, the same quartz veins are mapped by high chargeability of 10–35 mV/V and low resistivity of 185–400 Ω m. The dipole‐dipole configuration produces two parameters, that is, resistivity and chargeability, these methods distinguish the anomalies along the two selected profiles in the study area. An attempt was made for combining the resistivity and chargeability values to identify the anomalous zone boundaries. The results of inversion indicated that the conductive bodies are located at the subsurface, with depths ranging from 5 to 25 m. The ravine is often regarded as the worst instance of how water erosion is causing land deterioration. The farmers' livelihoods are often threatened by the ravine's expansion into the surrounding 50 m buffer zone, leaving them with no choice except to work as landless workers. Due to the high expense of ravine restoration, it is not economically possible to begin the process of reclamation in all of the ravine lands at once. As a result, it is necessary to recognize the prospective regions to bring in reclamation activities. In this work, the ravine vulnerability index for the Mahi ravine in Western India was developed using a cutting‐edge hybrid methodology. For the development of the ravine vulnerability index, it was determined that the sand, silt, clay, organic carbon, soil erodibility factor, slope, stream power index, topographic wetness index, sediment transport index, and cover factor were crucial components. Weights were applied to various parameters based on the perceived significance of each parameter in relation to another in the decision matrix of the analytical hierarchical process. The number of iterations made to reach a consistency ratio of under 10% to determine the final priority weights for each parameter. The sediment transport index had the lowest priority weight (1.4), whereas the sand had the highest priority weight (28.5). For reclamation purposes, the prospective active zones inside the designated ravine's 50‐m buffer zone, which covered an area of 63,031 acres, were determined. According to the ground truth‐validated ravine vulnerability index, possible reclamation zones were found in the 16,703 ha (26.50%) region of Mahi ravine, which was given extremely high priority. As per the Mahi ravine's land capacity classification, 20,275 ha (32.16%) of it is arable land, and 18,687 ha (29.65%) of it is non‐arable land that is ideal for soil and water conservation treatments. This article reports the first case of Aphelenchoides fragariae, a plant-parasitic nematode, infecting the ornamental plant Darmera peltata in the United Kingdom. The infestation was discovered at an outdoor nursery in York, where the plants exhibited leaf symptoms such as chlorosis, necrosis, and foliage malformation. Morphological and molecular analyses confirmed the presence of A. fragariae in the infected plants. This study provides important information about the infestation of D. peltata by A. fragariae and contributes to the understanding of plant diseases. [Extracted from the article]

As a natural hazard, drought is a complex multivariate phenomenon that does not depend on only one hydrometeorological variable, as well as, considering a particular kind of drought may not be effective for drought management. Considering this, many multivariate drought indices have been developed based on linearity assumptions or conventional copulas assuming symmetric relationships among univariate drought indices. In this study, D‐vine copula was applied to construct a four‐dimensional index, named as Integrated Drought Index (IDI), by combining four univariate drought indices (Standardized Precipitation Index [SPI], Reconnaissance Drought Index [RDI], Standardized Soil moisture Index [SSI] and Standardized stream flow Drought Index [SDI]) to better reflect many hydrometeorological variables (precipitation, evapotranspiration, soil moisture and stream flow) and different kinds of drought (meteorological, agricultural and hydrological) simultaneously. Vine copula was used to solve nonlinear and asymmetric relationships among drought indices due to its flexibility over the free selection of copula(s) in each step of hierarchical structure in high dimensional modelling. The IDI was constructed for 1‐ and 4‐month timescales for the upper Tapti basin of the central region in India. The performance of IDI was tested with dependence measures (Pearson's correlation coefficient, Mutual Information) and evaluated against the Terrestrial Water Storage Anomaly data derived from the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) mission. Spatial analysis of drought was carried out by fuzzy c‐means (FCM) clustering algorithm with IDI. IDI based on vine copula solved the nonlinear and asymmetric relationships among different variables associated with the occurrence of droughts effectively with a reduction of uncertainty as compared to the single drought indices for different kinds of droughts. Analysis revealed spatially different drought risks in the upper and lower river basins. Summary: Social Internet of Things (SIoT) is considered as one of the most recently evolved topics that connects people and object, object and object as well as people and people. The SIoT and big data provide an exact representation of IoT and social system for human progression characterization. Numerous machine learning techniques are employed to classify the data gathered from SIoT in a more powerful way. In this article, a deep neural network based marine predator (DRNN‐MP) algorithm is proposed in classifying big data. Here, an adaptive Savitzky–Golay filter is employed for selecting the subset and to eliminate undesirable data, as well as different noises. The big data databases are reduced using a Hadoop map reducing framework thereby enhancing the performances of the proposed approach. In addition to this, a modified relief technique is employed to select optimal features thereby performing better classification. The testing and training process based on the proposed approach for optimal classification of features from the big data considers four different databases namely coronary illness, GPS trajectories, localization data, and water treatment plant obtained from UCI machine learning repository. In addition to this, the proposed approach is evaluated for diverse performance measures namely accuracy, precision, specificity, sensitivity, throughput, and energy consumption. Finally, the proposed approach is compared for various metrics to illustrate the effectiveness of the system and the results demonstrated that the accuracy of our work is 98.25%. In general, the parameter adjustment is used to design the proportional‐integral‐derivative (PID) controllers. Despite that, to enhance the capacity of control performance by adjusting parameters is limited. Therefore, in this paper, an optimal design of proportional integral derivative acceleration (PIDA) controller is proposed for higher‐order nonlinear time delay system (TDS) using modified butterfly optimization algorithm (MBOA) with the aim of achieving optimal closed‐loop response, which is enhanced with mutualism system (m‐MBOA). In the proposed approach, the mutualism stage of symbiotic organisms search (SOS) and butterfly optimization algorithm (BOA) global exploration phase is considered. The major aim of the proposed approach is to "tune the gain of the PIDA controller to get the desired response." It reduces the drawback of the PIDA controller in the higher‐order TDS using advanced control limits is the individuality of the proposed approach. Here, the proposed approach is employed to reduce the higher‐order delays together with reliability limits, like minor overshoots, time resolution, and fixed stage deficiency. To evaluate the proposed PIDA controller, the execution is done by the MATLAB/Simulink platform, also its efficiency is compared with existing approaches. Moreover, the proposed and existing approaches are analyzed with mean, median, and standard deviations. From the analysis, the proposed approach achieves the stability with minimal delay time and reduces the computational complexity. Spatiotemporal analysis of droughts is important especially for future climate scenarios. We use complex network theoretic measures to understand spatiotemporal properties of precipitation-driven meteorological drought across India in past and future climate scenarios. We construct drought networks using event synchronization (ES) for moderate and extreme drought conditions derived using Standardized Precipitation Index at an aggregated scale of 6 months (SPI-6). Network measures like degree, closeness, betweenness and directionality are used to understand spatiotemporal properties of drought events. ES-based networks can capture synchronous events and help in ascertaining drought propagation through different regions. This study provides insight into the structural properties of drought networks and how they change for projected climate regimes. We find drought hotspots as well as regions which are vulnerable to spatially separated drought events. In the past, regions in western India were vulnerable to extreme droughts propagating from other regions of the country. Use of complex networks also reveals changes in drought propagation directions in future climate scenarios. Furthermore, using centrality measures, we also identify regions which aid in drought propagation and act as pathways connecting drought hotspots. The paper aims to compare the relative influence of migrant and indigenous entrepreneurs on regional development in the eastern state of Odisha in a developing country like India. The data is based on ownership across 30 districts and ten different sectors for small and medium businesses. It is modeled on economic indicators such as Net District Domestic Product (NDDP) and employment generation at the district level. One‐way ANOVA and multiple linear regression on the data set suggest that ownership pattern influences development indices differently, hence having policy‐level implications based on the goals to be achieved. While migrant entrepreneurs' impact NDDP and employment opportunities positively for main workers, indigenous entrepreneurs from Odisha positively influence employment opportunities at an overall level, and for marginal workers, everything else remains unchanged. Hence, during slowdowns or post‐pandemic recovery situations, when the need of the hour for the local government is immediate employment and livelihood for low‐skill‐based marginal workers, facilitating indigenous owners is more preferred. Objectives: To determine whether the methylation level of cytosine nucleotides in placental DNA can be used to predict tetralogy of Fallot (TOF) and provide insights into the developmental mechanism of this condition.Methods: Tissue sections were obtained from formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded specimens of placental tissue obtained at birth from eight cases with non-chromosomal, non-syndromic TOF and 10 unaffected newborns. The Illumina Infinium HumanMethylation450 BeadChip assay was used to measure cytosine ('CpG' or 'cg') methylation levels at loci throughout the placental genome. Differential methylation was assessed by comparing the β-values (a measure of the extent of cytosine methylation) for individual CpG loci in fetuses with TOF vs in controls. The most discriminating CpG sites were determined based on a preset cut-off of ≥ 2.0-fold change in the methylation level. The predictive accuracy of CpG loci with significant methylation changes for TOF was determined by the area under the receiver-operating-characteristics curve (AUC). A false-discovery-rate (FDR) P-value < 0.05 was used to define a statistically significant difference in the methylation level. Ingenuity Pathway Analysis (IPA) (Qiagen) was used to identify gene pathways that were significantly overexpressed, and thus altered, in TOF cases compared with controls.Results: We found a total of 165 significantly differentially methylated CpG loci in TOF cases compared with controls, in 165 separate genes. These biomarkers demonstrated from fair to excellent individual predictive accuracy for TOF detection, with AUCs ≥ 0.75 (FDR P-value < 0.001 for all). The following CpG loci (gene) had the highest predictive accuracy: cg05273049 (ARHGAP22; AUC = 1.00; 95% CI, 1.00-1.00), cg02540011 (CDK5; AUC = 0.96; 95% CI, 0.87-1.00), cg08404201 (TRIM27; AUC = 0.95; 95% CI, 0.84-1.00) and cg00687252 (IER3; AUC = 0.95; 95% CI, 0.84-1.00). IPA revealed over-representation (dysregulation) of 14 gene pathways involved in normal cardiac development, including cardiomyocyte differentiation via bone morphogenetic protein receptors, cardiac hypertrophy signaling and role of nuclear factor of activated T cells in cardiac hypertrophy. Cardiac hypertrophy is an important feature of TOF.Conclusions: Analysis of placental DNA cytosine methylation changes yielded accurate markers for TOF detection and provided mechanistic information on TOF development. Objective: Pleurisy in pigs has economic impacts in the production stage and at slaughter. This study sought to establish if some micro‐organisms can be found in high numbers in lungs with pleurisy by assessing batches of pigs at an abattoir in Queensland Australia. Design: Samples of lung (including trachea/bronchus and lymph nodes) from a maximum of 5 pleurisy affected pigs were collected from 46 batches of pigs representing 46 Queensland farms. Procedure: Pleurisy‐affected lung areas were cultured by traditional bacteriological methods and bacteria quantified by plate scores. Additionally, tracheal or bronchial swabs and apical lobe fluid were tested for Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae DNA and the superior tracheobronchial lymph nodes were tested for porcine circovirus type 2 DNA by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). All apparently significant bacteria were identified via PCR or sequencing. Typing was undertaken on some of the bacterial isolates. Results: The most prevalent pathogens were M. hyopneumoniae, Streptococcus suis and Porcine Circovirus type 2, being found in 34, 38 and 31 batches, respectively. Other bacteria found were Actinobacillus species (29 batches), Pasteurella multocida (24 batches), Mycoplasma flocculare (9 batches), Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae (7 batches), Mycoplasma hyorhinis (4 batches), Bisgaard Taxon 10 (1 batch), Glaesserella parasuis (1 batch), Streptococcus minor (1 batch) and Streptococcus porcinus (1 batch). Most batches had more than one bacterial species. Conclusion: The high percentage of batches infected with S. suis (83%), M. hyopneumoniae (74%) and PCV2 (70%) and clustering by a batch of these pathogens, as well as the presence of many secondary pathogens, suggests synergy between these organisms may have resulted in pleurisy. Objective: To evaluate the application of artificial intelligence (AI), i.e. deep learning and other machine-learning techniques, to amniotic fluid (AF) metabolomics and proteomics, alone and in combination with sonographic, clinical and demographic factors, in the prediction of perinatal outcome in asymptomatic pregnant women with short cervical length (CL).Methods: AF samples, which had been obtained in the second trimester from asymptomatic women with short CL (< 15 mm) identified on transvaginal ultrasound, were analyzed. CL, funneling and the presence of AF 'sludge' were assessed in all cases close to the time of amniocentesis. A combination of liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry and proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy-based metabolomics, as well as targeted proteomics analysis, including chemokines, cytokines and growth factors, was performed on the AF samples. To determine the robustness of the markers, we used six different machine-learning techniques, including deep learning, to predict preterm delivery < 34 weeks, latency period prior to delivery < 28 days after amniocentesis and requirement for admission to a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Omics biomarkers were evaluated alone and in combination with standard sonographic, clinical and demographic factors to predict outcome. Predictive accuracy was assessed using the area under the receiver-operating characteristics curve (AUC) with 95% CI, sensitivity and specificity.Results: Of the 32 patients included in the study, complete omics, demographic and clinical data and outcome information were available for 26. Of these, 11 (42.3%) patients delivered ≥ 34 weeks, while 15 (57.7%) delivered < 34 weeks. There was no statistically significant difference in CL between these two groups (mean ± SD, 11.2 ± 4.4 mm vs 8.9 ± 5.3 mm, P = 0.31). Using combined omics, demographic and clinical data, deep learning displayed good to excellent performance, with an AUC (95% CI) of 0.890 (0.810-0.970) for delivery < 34 weeks' gestation, 0.890 (0.790-0.990) for delivery < 28 days post-amniocentesis and 0.792 (0.689-0.894) for NICU admission. These values were higher overall than for the other five machine-learning methods, although each individual machine-learning technique yielded statistically significant prediction of the different perinatal outcomes.Conclusions: This is the first study to report use of AI with AF proteomics and metabolomics and ultrasound assessment in pregnancy. Aim: The purpose of this study was to compare the effect of ice and the lignocaine gel in reducing pain of needle prick before palatal nerve block using Numerical Rating Scale (NRS) and sound, eye and motor (SEM) scale. Material and Methodology: In this split‐mouth design study, a total of 200 patients undergoing maxillary molar extraction were selected and were randomly divided into two equal groups having 200 sites in each group. The operative sites were divided into two groups, namely, Group A in which Lignocaine gel was applied and Group B in which ice was applied. Results: Among the participant, 138 were men and 62 were women whose age ranged from 18 to 60 years. Statistical analysis of pain on Numerical Rating Scale (NRS) showed that the mean of NRS score for the group A and group B as 0.2 ± 0.41 and 0.05 ± 0.226 (mean ± SD), respectively, which was statistically insignificant (P >0.05). Mean of sound in SEM scale for the group A and group B as 1.4 ± 0.4894 and 1.05 ± 0.2236 (mean ± SD), respectively, which was statistically insignificant (P >0.05). Statistical evaluation showed that mean of eye in SEM scale for the group A and group B was 1.05 ± 0.2236 and 1.15 ± 0.3663 (mean ± SD), respectively, which was also statistically insignificant (P >0.05). Mean of motor scale for the group A and group B was 1.05 ± 0.2236 and 1.15 ± 0.3663 (mean ± SD), respectively, which was statistically insignificant (P >0.05). Drought analysis is an important part of risk management plan. Drought is usually characterized by variables such as severity and duration. Using standardized precipitation index (SPI) at an aggregated scale of 12 months, we construct different copula models for different river basins of India. Based on goodness of fit tests, suitable distributions are selected for duration and severity. These marginal distributions are then used to construct copula models from amongst‐Frank, Gumbel, Clayton and Student's t copula. It is found that for some river basins Frank copula can capture the dependence structure between duration and severity whereas for others Gumbel copula is effective. Exceedance probability, conditional probability and joint return period of different drought events are calculated which allude to differing drought resilience and persistence conditions in river basins. The river basins in the western India have a longer joint return period and smaller exceedance probability compared to the river basins in south India. We explore the conjunctive use for joint return period and exceedance probability to qualitatively assess the resilience of river basins to meteorological drought. The results suggest that the drought events in the south Indian river basins are less severe and more frequent whereas the ones in Central and Western India are severe and longer. Summary of main observation and conclusion: An efficient Pd‐catalyzed method for C—O cross‐coupling of ketoximes and chalcone oximes with activated aryl bromides and bromo‐chalcones has been developed. All oxime ethers were obtained in good to excellent yields by [(π‐allyl)PdCl]2/tBuXPhos (L7) catalyst system. TrixiePhos (L11) was also found to be effective for the oxime coupling. A facile solution‐based one‐step synthetic approach has been employed for an easy introduction of Nitrogen (N) into SnO2 lattice under the mild condition for a cocatalyst free hydrogen generation by photocatalytic water splitting. The crystal structure and morphology of synthesized N doped SnO2 nanoparticles were confirmed by powder X‐ray diffraction and electron microscopic techniques. Analysis by X‐ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy confirms that 4.6 % N was present in SnO2 lattice, while broadband observed in the Raman spectrum reveals the presence of oxygen vacancies and disordered structure due to N‐doping. The nanoparticles exhibit high surface area (139.7 m2/g) and bandgap close to 3.45 eV as deduced from Brunauer‐Emmett‐Teller (BET) measurement and Diffuse reflectance spectroscopic technique, respectively. The photocatalytic performance of the nanoparticles was evaluated by water splitting reaction for hydrogen generation using a photochemical reactor consisting of a Xenon lamp and was performed using different scavengers. It was found that out of various scavengers, maximum hydrogen yield, i. e. 169 μmol/g was achieved by N doped SnO2 nanoparticles with methanol and the order of scavengers for hydrogen generation using N doped SnO2 nanoparticles is Methanol>EDTA>TEOA. Summary: In this study, mitochondrial D‐loop sequence data on riverine, swamp and hybrid buffaloes from India have been generated and compared with other reported Indian riverine, Chinese and Bangladeshi swamp buffalo populations. Sequence analysis revealed the presence of 132 haplotypes, with a haplotype diversity of 0.9611 ± 0.0045 and a nucleotide diversity of 0.04801 ± 0.00126. For the first time, the existence of riverine–swamp hybrids among the Indian Chilika buffalo population has been recorded, having 49 chromosomes, which was also confirmed by mitochondrial haplotype sharing between Chilika and Indian swamp as well as Chinese swamp buffalo populations in the network analysis. Phylogenetic analysis documents the sharing of reported pre‐domestication haplogroups 'SA1', 'SA2', 'SA3' and 'SB1' between the Chilika and swamp buffalo populations of India, China and Bangladesh, an indication of the migration of swamp buffaloes towards Bangladesh and adjoining lower parts of India and north towards Chinese domestication sites. The results have also been supplemented by multidimension scaling, grouping Indian and Chinese swamp buffaloes more closely together with Bangladeshi buffaloes, but into a separate quadrant, whereas Chilika grouped away from other riverine as well as swamp buffaloes. These findings thus confirm the previous reports that the northeast region of India, close to the Indo‐China border, is the point of evolution of swamp buffaloes with multiple sites of domestication. Background: Breast cancer advocacy movements, driven by advocate-led civil society organizations (CSOs), have proven to be a powerful force for the advancement of cancer control in high-income countries (HICs). However, although patient advocacy movements are growing in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs) in response to an increasing cancer burden, the experiences and needs of advocate-led breast cancer CSOs in LMICs is understudied.Methods: The authors conducted a qualitative study using in-depth interviews and focus group discussions with 98 participants representing 23 LMICs in Eastern Europe, Central Asia, East and Southern Africa, and Latin America.Results: Despite geographic, cultural, and socioeconomic differences, the common themes that emerged from the data across the 3 regions are strikingly similar: trust, knowledge gaps, stigma, sharing experiences, and sustainability. The authors identified common facilitators (training/education, relationship building/networking, third-party facilitators, and communication) and barriers (mistrust, stigma, organizational fragility, difficulty translating HIC strategies) to establishing trust, collaboration, and advancing cancer advocacy efforts. To the authors' knowledge, the current study is the first to describe the role that coalitions and regional networks play in advancing breast cancer advocacy in LMICs across multiple regions.Conclusions: The findings of the current study corroborate the importance of investing in 3-way partnerships between CSOs, political leaders, and health experts. When provided with information that is evidence-based and resource appropriate, as well as opportunities to network, advocates are better equipped to achieve their goals. This article discusses a rare and poorly understood condition called metastatic melanoma to the stomach. The case study focuses on an 83-year-old man with Parkinson's disease who underwent a procedure for early gastric cancer. However, during a follow-up endoscopy, multiple raised nodular lesions with a depressed center were discovered in the stomach, resembling "volcano-like" lesions. Biopsies confirmed the presence of metastatic melanoma. The article highlights the challenges in diagnosing this condition and emphasizes the poor prognosis associated with gastric metastasis. Natto, a traditional soyfood fermented by Bacillus subtilis (natto), is prepared by steaming/cooking of soaked soybean seeds followed by inoculation with the bacteria and incubation. Natto soybean has increased in popularity due to its nutritional value and health benefits. Thus, the natto soybean market provides additional opportunities for farmers. The development of soybean cultivars with improved natto quality characteristics is crucial for maintaining and increasing the natto soybean market. Good‐quality characteristics of natto are determined by soybean cultivar, processing conditions and bacteria strain. Natto quality evaluation generally determined by sensory panels is time consuming. Therefore, indirect selection for natto quality based on seed traits is preferred. Seed morphological and physiological characteristics and seed compositions play an important role in producing natto of good quality. In this review, we have summarized natto processing conditions, natto quality characteristics, seed traits involved in natto quality and their genetic variation, as well as the genetic diversity in food‐grade soybean germplasms and B. subtilis strains. Development of novel antivirals, which requires knowledge of the viral life cycle in molecular detail, is a daunting task, involving extensive investments, and frequently resulting in failure. As there exist significant commonalities among virus families in the manner of host interaction, identifying and targeting common rather than specific features may lead to the development of broadly useful antivirals. Here, we have targeted the 3C protease of Hepatitis A Virus (HAV), a feco‐orally transmitted virus of the family Picornaviridae, for identification of potential antivirals. The 3C protease is a viable drug target as it is required by HAV, as well as by other picornaviruses, for post‐translational proteolysis of viral polyproteins and for inhibiting host innate immune pathways. Computational screening, followed by chemical synthesis and experimental validation resulted in identification of a few compounds which, at low micromolar concentrations, could inhibit HAV 3C activity. These compounds were further tested experimentally against the 3C protease of Human Rhinovirus, another member of the Picornaviridae family, with comparable results. Computational studies on 3C proteases from other members of the picornavirus family have indicated that the compounds identified could potentially be generic inhibitors for picornavirus 3C proteases. The active site residues of 3C proteases show a significant intraspecies overlap among most common members of the picornavirus family. We examined the relationship between physical work hazards and employee withdrawal among a sample of health care employees wherein safety compliance was hypothesized to moderate the relationship between physical work hazards and withdrawal. Health care workers (N = 162) completed an online questionnaire assessing physical work hazards, withdrawal, and indicators of workplace safety. Safety compliance moderated the relationship between patient aggression and withdrawal. Interaction plots revealed that for all significant moderations, the relationship between physical work hazards and withdrawal was weaker for those who reported high levels of compliance. Results shed initial light on the benefits of fostering safety compliance in health care contexts, which can contain exposure to physical work hazards. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: To investigate the genotype and diversity of Pasteurella multocida present in pig herds and to determine the extent of overlap with isolates from poultry flocks in Australia. Methods: A total of 43 isolates from pigs from different farms and regions of Australia were used in this study. A diverse collection of 41 poultry isolates, with 31 being previously characterised, was also used. The pig isolates and 10 poultry isolates were identified by species‐specific PCR assay, serotyped by the Heddleston scheme and genotyped by a multiplex PCR based on the lipopolysaccharide (LPS) outer core biosynthesis locus, repetitive element PCR fingerprinting (rep‐PCR) and multilocus sequence typing (MLST), with the latter being used on a subset of the isolates based on the rep‐PCR results. Results: Only 4 out of 8 recognised LPS genotypes were found in the pig isolates, with each isolate assigned to an LPS genotype. In contrast, 77% of the isolates were non‐typable or cross‐reacting in the Heddleston serotyping scheme. The rep‐PCR analysis recognised 20 patterns, yet only 16 sequence types (STs) were found and 4 were new STs. There were 5 STs (STs 7, 11, 20, 24 and 58) shared among the pig and poultry isolates. Conclusions: Although only limited numbers of isolates have been examined, there is evidence of a sharing of genotypes between Australian pigs and chickens. These findings have major implication for biosecurity measures with regard to minimising both direct (e.g. animal to animal) and in‐direct (e.g. shared staff or cross‐visitors) contact between poultry and pigs. Background: Airway epithelial injury is a crucial component of acute and severe asthma pathogenesis and a promising target for treatment of refractory asthma. However, the underlying mechanism of epithelial injury remains poorly explored. Although high levels of polyamines, mainly spermine, have been found in asthma and comorbidity, their role in airway epithelial injury and the cause of their altered levels in asthma have not been explored. Methods: We measured key polyamine metabolic enzymes in lung samples from normal and asthmatic subjects and in mice with OVA‐induced allergic airway inflammation (AAI). Polyamine metabolism was modulated using pharmacologic/genetic modulators. Epithelial stress and apoptosis were measured by TSLP levels and TUNEL assay, respectively. Results: We found loss of the polyamine catabolic enzymes spermidine/spermine‐N (1)‐acetyltransferase‐1 (SAT1) and spermine oxidase (SMOX) predominantly in bronchial epithelial cells (BECs) of human asthmatic lung samples and mice with AAI. In naïve mice, SAT1 or SMOX knockdown led to airway hyper‐responsiveness, remodeling, and BEC apoptosis. Conversely, in mice with AAI, overexpression of either SAT1 or SMOX alleviated asthmatic features and reduced TSLP levels and BEC apoptosis. Similarly, while pharmacological induction of SAT1 and SMOX using the polyamine analogue bis(ethyl)norspermine (BENSPM) alleviated asthmatic features with reduced TSLP levels and BEC apoptosis, pharmacological inhibition of these enzymes using BERENIL or MDL72527, respectively, worsened them. Spermine accumulation in lungs correlated with BEC apoptosis, and spermine treatment caused apoptosis of human BEAS‐2B cells in vitro. Conclusions: Spermine induces BEC injury. Induction of polyamine catabolism may represent a novel therapeutic approach for asthma via reversing BEC stress. Polyamine catabolic enzymes, SAT1 and SMOX, are reduced in asthma. Polyamine accumulation contributes to increased bronchial epithelial fragility in asthma. Drugs or genetic modulation that increases polyamine catabolism are effective in models of asthma. Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) is a major staple food crop grown worldwide on >220 million ha. Climate change is regarded to have severe effect on wheat yields, and unpredictable drought stress is one of the most important factors. Breeding can significantly contribute to the mitigation of climate change effects on production by developing drought-tolerant wheat germplasm. The objective of our study was to determine the annual genetic gain for grain yield (GY) of the internationally distributed Semi-Arid Wheat Yield Trials, grown during 2002-2003 to 2013-2014 and developed by the Bread Wheat Breeding program at the CIMMYT. We analyzed data from 740 locations across 66 countries, which were classified in low-yielding (LYE) and medium-yielding (MYE) environments according to a cluster analysis. The rate of GY increase (GYC) was estimated relative to four drought-tolerant wheat lines used as constant checks. Our results estimate that the rate of GYC in LYE was 1.8% (38.13 kg ha-1 yr-1), whereas in MYE, it was 1.41% (57.71 kg ha-1 yr-1). The increase in GYC across environments was 1.6% (48.06 kg ha-1 yr-1). The pedigrees of the highest yielding lines through the coefficient of parentage analysis indicated the utilization of three primary sources--'Pastor', 'Baviacora 92', and synthetic hexaploid derivatives--to develop drought-tolerant, high and stably performing wheat lines. We conclude that CIMMYT's wheat breeding program continues to deliver adapted germplasm for suboptimal conditions of diverse wheat growing regions worldwide. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: Crop residue burning (CRB) is a recurring problem, during October–November, in the northwestern regions (Punjab, Haryana, and western Uttar Pradesh) of India. The emissions from the CRB source regions spread in all directions through long‐range transport mechanisms, depending upon the meteorological conditions. In recent years, numerous studies have been carried out dealing with the impact of CRB on the air quality of Delhi and surrounding areas, especially in the Indo‐Gangetic Basin (also referred to as Indo‐Gangetic Plain). In this paper, we present detailed analysis using both satellite‐ and ground‐based sources, which show an increasing impact of CRB over the eastern parts of the Indo‐Gangetic Basin and also over parts of central and southern India. The increasing trends of finer black carbon particles and greenhouse gases have accelerated since the year 2010 onward, which is confirmed by the observation of different wavelength dependent aerosol properties. Our study shows an increased risk to ambient air quality and an increased spatiotemporal extent of pollutants in recent years, from CRB, which could be a severe health threat to the population of these regions. Glycine soja Siebold & Zucc. PI 393551 carries gene(s) for resistance to yellow mosaic disease, which is caused by Mungbean yellow mosaic India virus (MYMIV). Yellow mosaic disease is a serious constraint to soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] production in India. However, the gene(s) imparting resistance to MYMIV in G. soja have not yet been mapped. In the present study, three F2 populations derived from crosses of the three G. max cultivars 'Ankur', 'Sawarn Vasundhra', and 'JS335' with PI 393551, the donor for MYMIV resistance, were phenotyped for reaction to MYMIV at the geographic hot spot for yellow mosaic disease to determine inheritance of MYMIV resistance in PI 393551. All three F2 populations exhibited a 15:1 ratio of individuals resistant and susceptible to MYMIV, indicating duplicate dominant inheritance of MYMIV resistance genes. Further, a large F2 population (1520 plants) reconstructed from JS335 x PI 393551 was used for mapping MYMIV resistance genes. Bulked segregant analysis identified two genomic regions associated with MYMIV resistance, one on chromosome 8, and another on chromosome 14. A total of 78 plants with 100% MYMIV infection, which were expected to be homozygous for recessive genes, were genotyped using polymorphic simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers near linked markers on chromosome 8 and 14. Genetic analyses revealed tight linkages of MYMIV resistance with SSR marker BARCSOYSSR_08_0867 (15,434,295 bp) on chromosome 8, and with BARCSOYSSR_14_1416 (47,686,933 bp) and BARCSOYSSR_14_1417 (47,738,940 bp) on chromosome 14. Contents: Male infertility is one of the prime concerns of dairy cattle production. The study was designed to find out differentially expressed proteins in categorized crossbred (Holstein Friesian × Sahiwal) bull semen to serve as potential biomarkers for male infertility. Frozen crossbred bull semen with satisfactory phenotypic records were defined as “good” and “poor” based on their fertility rates. A total of 1,547 proteins were detected in bull spermatozoa using liquid chromatography–mass spectrometer (LC‐MS/MS) analysis. Results revealed that 558 (36.1%) and 653 (42.2%) proteins were expressed to good and poor quality bull spermatozoa, respectively. A total of 336 proteins (21.7%) were reported to be unique for both good and poor quality bull semen, and among the common proteins, 224 (66.7%) and 112 (33.3%) were up‐ and downregulated in good and poor quality categorized bull semen, respectively. Gene Ontology analysis of global proteomes identified different signalling pathways, and most of them were related to cellular motility, immune systems as well as cellular metabolisms. The distinctive presence of some of the proteins may provide an insight into the molecular mechanistic role played by these proteins in crossbred bull infertility. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: A novel truncated annular microstrip monopole antenna with partial ground for ultra‐wideband (UWB) applications is designed and fabricated. Proposed antenna consists of overlapping a circular patch with truncated annular patch, fed by a stepped microstrip line designed on commercially available low cost FR‐4 substrate covering the UWB band from 3.0 to 42.8 GHz for return‐loss better than −10 dB. The designed antenna is very compact in size occupying 35 × 32 × 1.6 mm3. The full‐wave electromagnetic simulation software HFSS was used to estimate the return‐loss, radiation patterns, and gain of a proposed antenna. Abstract: The cleavage fracture probability of ferritic and ferritic/martensitic steels is generally computed using Beremin's model. In this work, a novel approach is developed for Beremin's model to be applicable to crack tip conditions under nonself similar stress field. The modification of Beremin's model corrects the inaccurate integration of local cleavage fracture probabilities of reference volume elements due to the incorrect assumption of self similar stress field under large‐scale yielding. Under small‐scale yielding condition, where stresses remain self similar, integration of local cleavage failure probability is accurate. However, when the stresses differ along the thickness due to constraint loss, the integration of local cleavage fracture probability is inaccurate due to the fact that the stress levels are not same in all the reference volume elements. The modification developed in this work in the form of a parameter named Weibull Triaxiality, which measures the deviation of a crack tip volume from one under self similar stress field. Objective Determine if there is a link between virulenceassociated genes of Haemophilus parasuis and the genotype and serovar of isolates. Methods Isolates of H. parasuis from 38 farms across six Australian states, representing all serovars present in Australia, were assessed for the presence of virulence-associated genes (vtaA, hhdBA, fhuA, lsgB and capD). Enterobacterial Repetitive Intergenic Consensus PCR (ERIC-PCR) and multilocus sequence typing (MLST), together with existing knowledge of the serovar of the isolates and the health status of the source pig, were used to examine 75 Australian isolates of H. parasuis. Results An analysis of the ERIC-PRC patterns revealed six main clusters. One cluster of 25 isolates lacked virulence-associated genes and on the basis of serovar and field data, appeared to be mostly non-pathogenic. Another cluster of five isolates containing most of the virulence-associated genes appeared to be pathogenic based on the field and serovar data. The remaining four clusters were a mix of apparently pathogenic and apparently non-pathogenic isolates. The MLST results revealed a high degree of variation, with 54 sequence types of which 41 had not been previously recognised. Conclusion Not all virulence-associated genes are present in potentially pathogenic strains of H. parasuis. Australian isolates of H. parasuis are both genetically diverse and markedly different from isolates in other countries. These key findings suggest that vaccine development will be challenging. Summary: We report here the genomic characterization of two rare rotavirus A (RVAs) G1P[11] and G9P[X] strains detected in cattle calves from two different geographical locations in India during routine rotavirus surveillance. These strains possessed unusual G types (VP7 gene) on a bovine/artiodactyl genotype constellation, G1‐P[11]‐I2‐Rx‐Cx‐Mx‐Ax‐N2‐T6‐E2‐H3 (HR‐B91) and G9‐P[X]‐I2‐Rx‐Cx‐Mx‐Ax‐N2‐T6‐E2‐H3 (WB‐H2). This is the first report on molecular characterization of G9 in cattle, and second report on G1 in cattle. The VP7 gene of HR‐B91 occupied lineage IIc within G1 while that of WB‐H2 occupied IIIb within G9 genotype. The latter was found to be very diverse from other RVA strains of G9 genotype, and this may emerge as a new genotype in due course. The study provides evidence of zooanthroponotic transmission of human G1 and G9 RVA genes to calves. Of note, the G9 genotype was found to serve as the ancestral genotype for G1. Phylogenetic analysis of remaining gene segments revealed close relatedness to artiodactyl or artiodactyl‐like human RVA strains. Soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] breeding in the United States currently relies on a narrow genetic base. Glycine tomentella Hayata (2n = 78), native to Australia, is a perennial relative in the tertiary gene pool of soybean. No effort has been devoted to using this species to increase seed yield. The objectives of this research were (i) to identify high-yielding lines derived from backcrosses between the soybean cultivar Dwight (2n = 40) and G. tomentella PI 441001 (2n = 78) and to compare their agronomic performance with that of the recurrent parent, and (ii) to determine associations between G. tomentella introgressions and agronomic traits. PI 441001 was crossed to Dwight and immature seed rescue was used to produce a sterile F1 plant. Amphidiploid plants (2n = 118) were produced by treating the F1 hybrid with colchicine. Amphidiploid plants were backcrossed to Dwight and a series of backcrosses were made to obtain lines with 2n = 40 chromosomes, which were self-fertile and genetically stable. Preliminary yield testing was used to select 180 lines in maturity groups II, III, and IV that had yields greater than or less than that of the recurrent parent. Yield data collected in two replication tests at six to eight locations in 2013 and 2014 identified experimental lines in all three maturity groups that were higher yielding than the recurrent parent. All experimental and parental lines were genotyped, revealing an average of 1% G. tomentella introgression. Hepatitis E virus ( HEV) has two discrete epidemiological patterns: waterborne epidemics in developing countries only, caused by HEV genotype I, and sporadic zoonotic outbreaks in developing and developed countries caused by genotypes III and IV. This study was designed to investigate seroprevalence, molecular detection and the characterization of HEV by nested RT- PCR in swine as well as the occupational risk to exposed human population in Punjab state of north-western India. The occupational risk-exposed group comprised of swine farmers (organized - mixed feed feeders and unorganized - swill feeders), slaughterhouse workers, sewage workers and veterinary internes. During the study period, blood and faecal samples were collected from 320 swine and 360 humans with both high and low occupational exposure risks. The overall seroprevalence of swine HEV was 65.00%, with a significantly higher seropositivity in growing pigs (2-8 months of age). The prevalence of HEV RNA in swine faecal samples by nRT- PCR was 8.75% with a significantly higher detection in swill-fed pigs. With humans in the high occupational exposure risk population, significantly higher anti- HEV IgG seropositivity was observed (60.48%) as compared to control population (10.71%). Strong evidence of association between human anti- HEV IgG seropositivity and certain occupational exposure risk groups was observed ( p < 0.05). This indicates that unorganized swine farmers, slaughterhouse workers and sewage workers have higher odds of HEV infection in this study region. Percentage of nucleotide similarity between swine and human HEV isolates was less than that found in countries with zoonotic HEV outbreaks. Total electron content (TEC) computed from the network of Global Positioning System over Hong Kong area known as Hong Kong Sat-Ref-network has been used to study perturbation in the ionosphere from thunder storm activity. Data for geomagnetic quiet day ( Kp < 4, on 1 April 2014) have been analyzed. The lightning activity was measured from Total Lightning sensor LS8000 over/around the Hong Kong region. Deviation in vertical TEC (DTEC) and the rate of change of TEC index (ROTI) have been derived and compared for lightning day of 1 April 2014 and nonlightning day of 7 April 2014. An analysis showed reduction in TEC during evening hour (up to 1245 UT), whereas an enhancement during nighttime hour on the lightning day is observed. The variations in DTEC during nonlightning day are found to be insignificant in comparison to that during the lightning day. The ionospheric perturbation in TEC has been noticed up to a distance around ~500 km and more from the lightning center. ROTI is found to vary from 3 to 60 total electron content unit (TECU)/min (1 TECU = 1016 el m−2) on the day of thunderstorm activity, whereas ROTI is insignificant on nonlightning days. Signature of density bubbles in slant TEC data and periodicities (10-100 min) in DTEC data are observed. For the same pseudorandom numbers (1, 10, 13, 23, and 28) strong amplitude scintillations are also observed at a close by station. Cytoplasmic male-sterile ( CMS) lines are being used to produce hybrid seeds. Thus far, four CMS sources in soybean [ Glycine max (L.) Merr.] have been reported in China. However, they are not sufficient or efficient in meeting the requirements of commercial soybean hybrid seed production. In this study, 33 varieties were tested for CMS using 45 crosses among 37 landraces and 17 annual wild soybean accessions ( Glycine soja Sieb. et Zucc.). The cross of N23661 × N23658 showed partial to complete male sterility in backcross generations, while the corresponding reciprocal cross showed normal male fertility. Thus, the cytoplasm of N23661 is male-sterile, the continuously backcrossed line is a male-sterile line (designated NJCMS4A), and N23658 is its maintainer (designated NJCM4B). The male fertility of NJCMS4A was restored by another accession, Nansheng9403. Accordingly, NJCMS4A along with its maintainer and restorer composes a complete set of three lines for producing hybrid soybean. Using mitochondrial markers and sequence analyses, NJCMS4A is a CMS line with its cytoplasm not identical to the four previously reported CMS sources in soybean. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Soybean lodging can result in serious yield reduction. Detecting the quantitative trait loci ( QTL) associated with lodging tolerance for their further application in marker-assisted selection ( MAS) has the potential to enhance soybean breeding efficiency. In this study, a genome-wide association analysis ( GWAS) was performed to identify soybean accessions that could potentially be used to produce lodging-tolerant varieties, based on the comprehensive evaluation of lodging scores ( LS) obtained for the parental cultivar 'Tokachi nagaha' and its 137 derived cultivars. Results showed that genotype, environment and genotype × environment interaction significantly influenced LS. Of the 31 significant SNPs identified, 22 were consistently detected in two or more environments and 27 SNPs were located in or close to agronomically important QTL mapped by linkage analysis. Best linear unbiased predictors ( BLUPs) of LS tend to decrease with the elite alleles contained by accessions increasing. Some excellent accessions, with lower BLUPs and D i (stability coefficients) values and more elite alleles, were selected. Typical soybean oil is composed of palmitic, stearic, oleic, linoleic and linolenic acids. High oleic acid content in soybean seed is a key compositional trait that improves oxidative stability and increases oil functionality and shelf life. Using a marker-assisted selection method, near-isogenic lines ( NILs) of G00-3213 for the high oleic trait were developed and yield tested. These NILs have various combinations of FAD2-1A and FAD2-1B alleles that were derived from the same backcrossing populations. The results indicated that G00-3213 NILs with both homozygous mutant FAD2-1A and FAD2-1B alleles produced an average of 788 g/kg oleic acid content. The results also demonstrated that possessing these mutant alleles did not cause a yield reduction. Furthermore, seed germination tests across 12 temperatures (12.8-32.0°C) showed that modified seed composition for oleic acid in general did not have a major impact on seed germination. However, there was a possible reduction in seed germination vigour when high oleic seeds are planted in cold soil. This paper summarises the findings of an international collaborative programme that focuses on the problem of the growth of cracks that arise from natural corrosion in bridge steels. The experimental data presented in this paper confirm that the bridge steel da/dN versus Δ K relationship is similar to that seen by the high-strength aerospace steels D6ac and 4340. It is then shown that the methodology developed to predict the growth of small naturally occurring cracks in aerospace materials can also be used to compute the growth of cracks that arise because of natural corrosion in bridge steels. Background: Octreotide is a somatostatin analog that suppresses insulin secretion. Hypothesis: We hypothesized that octreotide would suppress insulin concentrations in horses and that normal (N) horses and those with insulin dysregulation (ID) would differ significantly in their plasma glucose and insulin responses to administration of octreotide. Animals: Twelve horses, N = 5, ID = 7. Methods: Prospective study. An oral sugar test was performed to assign horses to N and ID groups. Octreotide (1.0 μg/kg IV) was then administered, and blood was collected at 0, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 45, 60, 75, and 90 minute, and 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 12, and 24 hour for measurement of glucose and insulin concentrations. Area under the curve (AUC) values were calculated. Results: Mean AUC values for glucose and insulin did not differ between normal (n = 5) and ID (n = 7) groups after octreotide injection. Significant time (P < .001) effects were detected for glucose and insulin concentrations. A group × time interaction (P = .091) was detected for insulin concentrations after administration of octreotide, but the group (P = .33) effect was not significant. Conclusions and Clinical Importance: Octreotide suppresses insulin secretion, resulting in hyperglycemia, and then concentrations increase above baseline as glycemic control is restored. Our hypothesis that octreotide causes insulin concentrations to decrease in horses was supported, but differences between N and ID groups did not reach statistical significance when blood glucose and insulin responses were compared. Weed competition can severely reduce soybean ( Glycine max (L.) Merr.) yields, particularly in organic systems. An efficient screening and breeding approach is needed to increase breeding progress for weed tolerance. This study sought to (i) establish a system for direct selection of competitive genotypes, (ii) evaluate genotypic differences in weed tolerance among six early-maturing genotypes and (iii) assess the contribution of selected morphological traits to weed tolerance. A direct selection system providing two different levels of weed competition through all development stages of a soybean crop was developed, using mixtures of selected crop species as sown competitors. Two resulting mixtures induced intermediate (<30%) and strong (>50%) yield reduction, respectively. This selection system can be applied in screening and breeding programmes to facilitate breeding for weed tolerance. No significant difference in weed tolerance was detected between six soybean genotypes of maturity groups 000 to 00. Morphological traits that might influence competitive ability, for example light absorption, leaf area and lateral shoots, were assessed, and their potential for indirect selection for weed tolerance is discussed. The Nagaland-Manipur ophiolites (NMO) of Northeast India forms a part of the Tethyan ophiolites and comprises a suite of tectonite peridotites and cumulate mafic-ultramafic sequence with mafic extrusive-intrusive rocks, felsic intrusives and oceanic pelagic sediments along with minor podiform chromitites. However, sheeted dykes, which are considered as a significant component of ophiolites, are absent in the NMO. The tectonite peridotites are distinguished from the cumulate pyroxenites by the presence of pyroxene lineation, deformed bands and strained extinction in olivine, kink twin lamellae in pyroxene. Both the tectonite peridotites and cumulate pyroxenites contain aluminous spinel with Cr number [Cr# = Cr/(Cr + Al)] in the range of 0.14 to 0.29 and 0.27 to 0.48, respectively. Mg number [Mg# = Mg/(Mg + Fe2+)] in Cr-spinel is higher in tectonite peridotites (0.71-0.76) than cumulate pyroxenites (0.44-0.53). Chondrite-normalized rare earth elements (REE) patterns of cumulate pyroxenites exhibit depleted at light REEE (LREE) (LaN/SmN = 0.380-0.759) but flat middle REE (MREE) to heavy REE (HREE) (SmN/YbN = 0.622-0.756). However, the tectonite peridotites show gradual decrease in concentrations from HREE to MREE (SmN/YbN = 0.285-0.460) and slight increase in LREE (LaN/SmN = 0.721-2.201). The cumulate pyroxenites show strong enriched PPGE patterns and higher PGE concentrations (∑PGE = 85.8-163.5 ppb) compared with the tectonite peridotites (∑PGE = 34.8-113.0 ppb). The estimated equilibration temperature ranges from 890 to 931 °C for cumulate pyroxenites and 971 to 1156 °C for tectonite peridotites. The olivine-spinel equilibrium along with Cr-spinel chemistry and PGE data suggests that the tectonite peridotites represent the residual mantle left after limited extraction of basaltic melts by low-degree partial melting (<15%). Conversely, the presence of highly magnesian orthopyroxene and clinopyroxene in the cumulate pyroxenites in conjunction with their geothermometry suggests that they were formed at high pressure and temperature by magmatic fractionation from the basaltic melt. The geochemical data together with field and petrographical evidences indicate that both the tectonite peridotites and cumulate pyroxenites are essentially spinel-bearing and devoid of plagioclase, suggesting their derivation in the mantle beyond the stability limit of plagioclase in a mid-oceanic ridge tectonic setting. We conclude that the ultramafic sequence of the NMO was initially generated at a mid-oceanic ridge tectonic setting close to the eastern boundary of the Indian passive margin and then thrust over the continental margin of the Indian Plate towards the west during its collisional and subduction process with/beneath the Myanmar Plate. A paired watershed approach was used to quantifying the effects of staggered contour trenching (SCT) densities on runoff and soil loss from a long-term field experiment. Four adjacent physiographical similar ravine watersheds were selected. After 2-year calibration period, three of the four watersheds were treated with different SCT densities and leaving one watershed as untreated control (WC). The SCT densities of 139, 278 and 417 trenches ha−1 were determined based on the targeted 25, 50 and 75% runoff trapping potential of the WT1, WT2 and WT3 treatment watersheds, respectively. Runoff and soil loss were recorded for a period of 11 years including 2 years of calibration period. The calibration and treatment prediction equations for the treatment watershed with respect to untreated control watershed were developed by the simple linear regression. F-test and t-test ( p < 0·0001) suggested that calibration predictions were highly significant and treatment prediction equations differ significantly. Results showed mean runoff reductions of 86·1, 60·5 and 37·7% in the WT3, WT2 and WT1 treatment watershed over the control, respectively. Similar trends as the runoff were also recorded in soil loss reduction by 124·9, 77·1 and 40·0% for the WT3, WT2 and WT1 over Wc, respectively. Paired t-test ( p < 0·001) indicated that the means of the treatment effects on runoff and soil loss in treatment watersheds differ significantly with control watershed. It was concluded that 417 staggered contour trenches ha−1 is an optimum trenching density for supporting the horti-pastoral land use system in ravine lands of India. Freely nodulating soybean genotypes vary in their phosphorus (P) uptake and P-use efficiency ( PUE) in low-P soils. Understanding the genetic basis of these genotypes' performance is essential for effective breeding. To study the inheritance of PUE, we conducted crosses using two high- PUE genotypes, two moderate- PUE genotypes and two inefficient- PUE genotypes, and obtained F1, F2, BC1 and BC2 populations. The inheritance of PUE was evaluated using a randomized complete block design. A generation mean analysis of phenotypic data showed that PUE was heritable, with complex inheritance patterns and the presence of additive, dominance and epistatic gene effects. Seed P, shoot P, root P, P-incorporation efficiency and PUE were largely quantitatively inherited traits. There were dominance, additive × additive and dominance × dominance gene effects on PUE, grain yield, shoot dry weight, 100-seed weight, root dry weight and shoot dry matter per unit P for populations grown under low-P conditions. Dominance effects were generally greater than additive effects on PUE-related indices. These PUE indices can be used to select P-efficient soybean genotypes from segregating populations.
