Trait‐based ecology (TBE) has proven useful in the terrestrial realm and beyond for collapsing ecological complexity into traits that can be compared and generalized across species and scales. However, TBE for marine macroalgae is still in its infancy, motivating research to build the foundation of macroalgal TBE by leveraging lessons learned from other systems.Our objectives were to evaluate the utility of mean trait values (MTVs) across species, to explore the potential for intraspecific trait variability, and to identify macroalgal ecological strategies by clustering species with similar traits and testing for bivariate relationships between traits. To accomplish this, we measured thallus toughness, a trait associated with resistance to herbivory, and tensile strength, a trait associated with resistance to physical disturbance, in eight tropical macroalgal species across up to seven sites where they were found around Moorea, French Polynesia.We found interspecific trait variation generally exceeded intraspecific variation across species. Furthermore, MTV within species varied across sites, suggesting future research should focus on whether these traits are influenced by site‐specific differences in biotic and abiotic drivers. Species grouped into three clusters representing different ecological strategies: species that were defended against herbivores but not strong, species that were strong but not defended and species that were neither. Intraspecific standardized major axis regressions revealed five species exhibited significant or marginally significant positive relationships between these two traits, suggesting trait syndromes within species. Only one species exhibited a significant intraspecific trade‐off, as indicated by a negative regression slope.Synthesis. Our results point to three key takeaways that should provide a foundation to rapidly advance development of TBE for macroalgae in the future. First, our evidence supports the use of MTVs for macroalgae. Second, we identified significant spatial variability in macroalgal traits that may indicate an ability to respond to shifting environmental drivers. Third, measuring even a few traits can be a powerful tool to identify different ecological strategies to resist disturbances such as herbivory and removal by wave action. We hope these novel findings motivate future research into a wider suite of macroalgal traits, functions and strategies to further develop trait‐based approaches for marine macroalgae. While trait‐based approaches have been effectively leveraged by plant ecologists to advance our understanding of community responses to major global challenges, such as climate change and invasive species, the study of marine macroalgae is still mired in a functional group (FG) framework developed in the 1980s.In this paper, we used predominantly categorical data for 18 macroalgal traits that were accessible in public databases and/or the literature to explore their usefulness in a trait‐based framework for marine macroalgae. Species were clustered into emergent, data‐driven groups using a Gower dissimilarity matrix, then a k‐medoid clustering approach called partitioning around the medoids.We identified 14 emergent groups (EGs) that captured a spectrum of strategies used by different macroalgal species. However, significant 'gaps' in trait space may identify evolutionary constraints to algal adaptive strategies. Multivariate analysis showed how the 18 traits created trait space and drove the clustering. A spectrum of strategies and the influence of multiple traits imply that algal strategies are likely governed by complex multivariate, not bivariate, trade‐offs. Finally, we found that our EGs appeared to reflect multivariate trade‐offs and diverse ecological strategies more than the traditional FG model for macroalgae. We tested the usefulness of our EGs by comparing real‐world spatial distributions of species across habitats with known strong environmental filters to their area occupied in trait space. We found significant separation in trait space and divergent occupancy patterns across global distributions, attachment substrates and elevational zones. These results support the use of categorical data accessible in the literature as a useful step towards developing trait‐based ecology for marine macroalgae.Synthesis. Our findings indicate that readily accessible categorical traits produce emergent FGs that reflect environmental filtering and therefore demonstrate the power of trait‐based approaches over the current FG framework. Furthermore, we posit that categorical traits are a valuable and potentially complementary addition to a newly developing database of continuous traits because they encompass a broader, more globally accessible set of traits. Cobalt has been used by human athletes due to its purported performance-enhancing effects. It has been suggested that cobalt administration results in enhanced erythropoiesis, secondary to increased circulating erythropoietin (EPO) concentrations leading to improvements in athletic performance. Anecdotal reports of illicit administration of cobalt to horses for its suspected performance enhancing effects have led us to investigate the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamic effects of this compound when administered in horses, so as to better regulate its use. In the current study, 18 horses were administered a single intravenous dose of cobalt chloride or cobalt gluconate and serum and urine samples collected for up to 10 days post administration. Cobalt concentrations were measured using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and pharmacokinetic parameters determined. Additional blood samples were collected for measurement of equine EPO concentrations as well as to assess any effects on red blood cell parameters. Horses were observed for adverse effects and heart rate monitored for the first 4 h post administration. Cobalt was characterized by a large volume of distribution (0.939 L/kg) and a prolonged gamma half-life (156.4 h). Cobalt serum concentrations were still above baseline values at 10 days post administration. A single administration of cobalt had no effect on EPO concentrations, red blood cell parameters or heart rate in any of the horses studied and no adverse effects were noted. Based on the prolonged gamma half-life and prolonged residence time, regulators should be able to detect administration of a single dose of cobalt to horses. Copyright © 2014 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. When sympatric species compete, character divergence may help maintain coexistence. Snakes are often found in species-rich assemblages while exploiting similar resources; because snake body size is a relatively plastic trait that determines the range of prey sizes an individual may consume, divergence in body size between sympatric species may arise as a result of interspecific interactions. The North American racer, Coluber constrictor, and the larger coachwhip, Coluber flagellum, have a close taxonomic relationship and similar foraging strategies. Therefore, we hypothesized that C. constrictor would be smaller where they co-occur with C. flagellum, as compared to where C. flagellum is absent, throughout the southeastern extent of their range. To evaluate this hypothesis, we obtained data on body size for 2321 adult C. constrictor and 526 adult C. flagellum, along with habitat data and other potentially important factors influencing body size. Coluber constrictor was smaller than elsewhere when in peninsular Florida, in pine forests, on hydric soils and in the presence of the larger and potentially competing C. flagellum. Body size of C. flagellum did not vary by any measured habitat variables. The trends we documented are consistent with the hypothesis that C. constrictor body size is influenced by several variables, including co-occurrence with C. flagellum. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Agriculture is the dominant land use in the Lower Flint River Basin (LFRB) of south-western Georgia, USA, and is often a significant disturbance factor affecting streams and riparian habitats. Streams in the LFRB harbor a great diversity of freshwater turtles, which are among the many groups of aquatic fauna impacted by agricultural disturbance to riparian habitats. The objective of this study was to assess turtle diversity and abundance in both agriculturally impacted and unimpacted or restored reaches of streams in the LFRB. In 2007 and 2008, we used hoop traps and effort-managed snorkel surveys to sample turtles on 14 reaches of two streams (Ichawaynochaway and Spring Creeks). We recorded 823 captures of 674 individuals representing nine turtle species. There was a measurable association between the percentage of riparian undisturbed land cover and the number of turtles captured for the four most frequently captured species ( Trachemys scripta, Graptemys barbouri, Pseudemys concinna and Sternotherus minor). We found a negative relationship between the total number of turtles captured and percentage of undisturbed land cover within a 287 m buffer width due to a significant increase in the number of T. scripta in less-forested sections of the creeks; however, the number of G. barbouri captures declined with reduced undisturbed land cover. Species evenness was positively correlated with percentage of undisturbed land. These results suggest that loss of riparian forest is associated with a decline in freshwater diversity (evenness) and a decline in the abundance of the endemic, state protected G. barbouri; however, overall turtle abundance may remain stable or increase with loss of riparian forest cover due to an increase in common, cosmopolitan species. Recent studies suggest that freshwater turtle populations are becoming increasingly male-biased. A hypothesized cause is a greater vulnerability of female turtles to road mortality. We evaluated this hypothesis by comparing sex ratios from published and unpublished population surveys of turtles conducted on- versus off-roads. Among 38 166 turtles from 157 studies reporting sex ratios, we found a consistently larger female fraction in samples from on-roads (61%) than off-roads (41%). We conclude that female turtles are indeed more likely to cross roadways than are males, which may explain recently reported skewed sex ratios near roadways and signify eventual population declines as females are differentially eliminated.
