Background: Patients diagnosed with advanced stage cancer face an elevated risk of suicide. We aimed to develop a suicidal ideation (SI) risk prediction model in patients with advanced cancer for early warning of their SI and facilitate suicide prevention in this population. Patients and Methods: We consecutively enrolled patients with multiple types of advanced cancers from 10 cancer institutes in China from August 2019 to December 2020. Demographic characteristics, clinicopathological data, and clinical treatment history were extracted from medical records. Symptom burden, psychological status, and SI were assessed using the MD Anderson Symptom Inventory (MDASI), Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), and Patient Health Questionnaire‐9 (PHQ‐9), respectively. A multivariable logistic regression model was employed to establish the model structure. Results: In total, 2814 participants were included in the final analysis. Nine predictors including age, sex, number of household members, history of previous chemotherapy, history of previous surgery, MDASI score, HADS‐A score, HADS‐D score, and life satisfaction were retained in the final SI prediction model. The model achieved an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.85 (95% confidential interval: 0.82–0.87), with AUCs ranging from 0.75 to 0.95 across 10 hospitals and higher than 0.83 for all cancer types. Conclusion: This study built an easy‐to‐use, good‐performance predictive model for SI. COVID‐19 is currently pandemic and the detection of SARS‐CoV‐2 variants in wastewater is causing widespread concern. Herein, cold atmospheric plasma (CAP) is proposed as a novel wastewater disinfection technology that effectively inactivates SARS‐CoV‐2 transcription‐ and replication‐competent virus‐like particles, coronavirus GX_P2V, pseudotyped SARS‐CoV‐2 variants, and porcine epidemic diarrhoea virus in a large volume of water within 180 s (inhibition rate > 99%). Further, CAP disinfection did not adversely affect the viability of various human cell lines. It is identified that CAP produced peroxynitrite (ONOO−), ozone (O3), superoxide anion radicals (O2−), and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) as the major active substances for coronavirus disinfection. Investigation of the mechanism showed that active substances not only reacted with the coronavirus spike protein and affected its infectivity, but also destroyed the nucleocapsid protein and genome, thus affecting virus replication. This method provides an efficient and environmentally friendly strategy for the elimination of SARS‐CoV‐2 and other coronaviruses from wastewater. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives: Patients with advanced colorectal cancer (CRC) have multiple concurrent physical and psychological symptoms. This study aimed to explore the relationship between anxiety, depression, and symptom burden in advanced CRC. Methods: A multicenter cross‐sectional study was conducted in 10 cancer centers from geographically and economically diverse sites in China. A total of 454 patients with advanced CRC completed the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale and the MD Anderson Symptom Inventory. Multiple regression analysis was applied to explore the relationship between anxiety, depression and symptom burden. Results: About one‐third of the patients showed symptoms of anxiety or depression. Patients with anxiety or depression reported significantly higher symptom burden than those without (p < 0.001). Patients with anxiety or depression reported a higher proportion of moderate‐to‐severe (MS) symptom number than those without (p < 0.001). About 52% of the patients with anxiety or depression reported at least three MS symptoms. The prevalence of MS symptoms was ranging from 7.3% (shortness of breath) to 22% (disturbed sleep), and in patients with anxiety or depression was 2–10 times higher than in those without (p < 0.001). Disease stage (β = −2.55, p = 0.003), anxiety (β = 15.33, p < 0.001), and depression (β = 13.63, p < 0.001) were associated with higher symptom burden. Conclusions: Anxiety and depression in patients with advanced cancer correlated with higher symptom burden. Findings may lead oncology professionals to pay more attention to unrecognized and untreated psychological symptoms in symptom management for advanced cancer patients. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: To assess fear of progression (FoP)'s relationship with symptom burden and disease and social/family factors, as well as, determine the status of FoP in women with stage‐IV breast cancer in Shandong, China. Methods: Two hundred and sixteen women were recruited from the department of breast cancer internal medicine, Shandong Cancer Hospital and Institute. Data for this observational study were collected between October 2020 and January 2021 using the MD Anderson Symptom Inventory, the Fear of Progression Questionnaire‐Short Form (FoP‐Q‐SF) and a participant information scale. SPSS 23.0 was used for statistical analysis. Results: After excluding invalid responses, the data of 200 participants were analysed. The average total FoP‐Q‐SF score was 29.39 ± 9.39 (95% confidence interval, 21.81–27.64). The FoP level among the participants was relatively low. For disease and social/family factors, FoP statistically significantly differed by satisfaction with family emotional support and the Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group (ECOG) score. The ECOG score was positively correlated with FoP. Furthermore, symptom burden was positively correlated with FoP. Conclusions: Among patients with stage‐IV breast cancer, satisfaction with family emotional support, ECOG score and symptom burden play key roles in FoP. Interventions, including providing appropriate emotional support from family, improving physical fitness and relieving symptom burden, must be considered in future studies, which may improve patients' overall physical and mental status and provide a supportive therapeutic environment. Omicron BF.7 became the predominant SARS‐CoV‐2 variant in Beijing after the abolishment of Zero‐COVID policy in December 2022. The ability of antibodies elicited by BF.7 infection to cross‐react with SARS‐CoV‐2‐like viruses is unknown. This study aimed to investigate the cross‐reactive neutralizing antibodies against SARS‐CoV‐2‐related pangolin coronavirus GX_P2V in sera from vaccinated and/or SARS‐CoV‐2‐infected individuals. All vaccinated individuals who recovered from Omicron BF.7 breakthrough infections exhibited substantially higher levels of neutralizing antibodies against GX_P2V, compared to other subject groups, with a geometric mean titer (GMT) of 362. Uninfected individuals who received four‐mixed‐dose vaccines also demonstrated higher levels of neutralizing antibodies (GMT = 44) against GX_P2V than those uninfected individuals who received two‐ or three‐dose vaccines and those unvaccinated convalescents of wild‐type SARS‐CoV‐2. This study highlights the significance of prior vaccinations with wild‐type SARS‐CoV‐2 vaccines in generating potent cross‐protective immunity against future spillovers of SARS‐CoV‐2‐like viruses. Antivirals that can combat coronaviruses, including SARS‐CoV‐2 and associated mutants, are urgently needed but lacking. Simultaneously targeting the viral physical structure and replication cycle can endow antivirals with sustainable and broad‐spectrum anti‐coronavirus efficacy, which is difficult to achieve using a single small‐molecule antiviral. Thus, a library of nanomaterials on GX_P2V, a SARS‐CoV‐2‐like coronavirus of pangolin origin, is screened and a surface‐functionalized gold nanocluster (TMA‐GNC) is identified as the top hit. TMA‐GNC inhibits transcription‐ and replication‐competent SARS‐CoV‐2 virus‐like particles and all tested pseudoviruses of SARS‐CoV‐2 variants. TMA‐GNC prevents viral dissemination through destroying membrane integrity physically to enable a virucidal effect, interfering with viral replication by inactivating 3CL protease and priming the innate immune system against coronavirus infection. TMA‐GNC exhibits biocompatibility and significantly reduces viral titers, inflammation, and pathological injury in lungs and tracheas of GX_P2V‐infected hamsters. Breast milk has been found to inhibit coronavirus infection, while the key components and mechanisms are unknown. We aimed to determine the components that contribute to the antiviral effects of breastmilk and explore their potential mechanism. Lactoferrin (Lf) and milk fat globule membrane inhibit severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS‐CoV‐2)‐related coronavirus GX_P2V and transcription‐ and replication‐competent SARS‐CoV‐2 virus‐like particles in vitro and block viral entry into cells. We confirmed that bovine Lf (bLf) blocked the binding between human angiotensin‐converting enzyme 2 and SARS‐CoV‐2 spike protein by combining receptor‐binding domain (RBD). Importantly, bLf inhibited RNA‐dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp) activity of both SARS‐CoV‐2 and SARS‐CoV in vitro in the nanomolar range. So far, no biological macromolecules have been reported to inhibit coronavirus RdRp. Our result indicated that bLf plays a major role in inhibiting viral replication. bLf treatment reduced viral load in lungs and tracheae and alleviated pathological damage. Our study provides evidence that bLf prevents SARS‐CoV‐2 infection by combining SARS‐CoV‐2 spike protein RBD and inhibiting coronaviruses' RdRp activity, and may be a promising candidate for the treatment of coronavirus disease 2019. Anthocyanins are responsible for the intensity of color in plants; however, the systematic mechanisms underlying the color differences in the fruit of Ailanthus altissima remain unknown. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the transcriptomes of the white and red fruit of A. altissima by screening and validating the key genes involved in flavonoid and anthocyanin biosynthesis. Samples of A. altissima fruit were collected 30, 45, and 60 days after flowering, and their pigment and sugar content were determined. The anthocyanin content was significantly higher in red than in white fruits. Transcriptome analysis was also performed on the fruit samples, 73,807 unigenes were assembled and annotated to seven databases. Twenty‐one co‐expressed modules were identified via weighted gene co‐expression network analysis, of which two were associated with flavonoids and anthocyanins. Furthermore, in three growth stages, 126, 30, and 124 differentially expressed genes were screened between white and red fruit. Genes involved in flavonoid and anthocyanin metabolism were identified. AaDFR (A. altissima bifunctional dihydroflavonol 4‐reductase/flavanone 4‐reductase) and AaANS (A. altissima anthocyanidin synthase) were associated with flavonoid and anthocyanin metabolism. Members of the AaDFR and AaANS families were also identified, and their basic physicochemical characteristics, conserved domains, motif compositions, phylogenetics, and expression levels were analyzed. The overexpression of AaDFR and AaANS in transgenic Arabidopsis significantly increased the content of seed and foliar flavonoids and anthocyanins. Summary: In the present study, we investigated the effects of hydrogen‐rich water (HRW) on the germination efficiency, chemical composition, biofunctional and volatile compounds, and texture of germinated brown rice (GBR). Our results showed that HRW (1.5 mg L−1) treatment significantly increased the germination efficiency of GBR by changing the migration of water during soaking. A chemical composition analysis showed that HRW treatment changed the contents of some biofunctional compounds and volatile components; increased the contents of soluble dietary fibre, thiamine, niacin, γ‐aminobutyric acid, some amino acids and K, P, Mn and Fe; and decreased the contents of starch and Na of GBR compared with those of GBR treated with regular pure water. Moreover, HRW treatment also improved the texture of GBR due to the changes in the ultrastructure of the bran layer and the decrease in insoluble dietary fibre. In summary, HRW is suggested to be applied in the processing of GBR since it can increase germination efficiency and improve the nutritional and eating qualities of GBR. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Major depressive disorder (MDD) is associated with an increased risk of suicide and suicide attempt among cancer patients. However, we do not know how many cancer patients without MDD have suicidal ideation (SI). Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the prevalence, characteristics and correlated factors of SI among advanced cancer patients without MDD. Methods: This is a multi‐center, cross‐sectional study based on an electronic patient‐reported outcome systems in patients who were diagnosed with advanced lung, liver, gastric, esophageal, colorectal or breast cancer, the top six prevalent cancers in China. A total of 2930 advanced cancer patients were recruited from 10 regional representative cancer centers across China from August 2019 to December 2020. Patients completed the Patient Health Questionnaire‐9 regarding if they had thoughts of being better off dead or of hurting themselves in some way in the previous 2 weeks. Patients also completed the symptom inventory and quality of life assessment. Generalized estimating equation model was performed to explore the correlated factors associated with SI among the patients without MDD. Results: The overall prevalence of SI among advanced cancer patients without MDD was 13.1%. The prevalence was higher in older patients. After adjusted for existing conditions, patients with vomiting symptom (p < 0.001), poorer life quality (p < 0.001), and middle education level (p = 0.031) were correlated factors of SI. Conclusions: The suicidal ideation is common in advanced cancer patients without MDD. Patients with vomiting, poor quality of life, and middle education level should be screened and monitored for suicidal ideation even without MDD. Clinical Trial Information: ChiCTR1900024957. Since the start of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID‐19) pandemic, new variants of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS‑CoV‑2) have emerged, accelerating the spread of the virus. Omicron was defined by the World Health Organization in November 2021 as the fifth "variant of concern" after Alpha, Beta, Gamma, and Delta. In recent months, Omicron has become the main epidemic strain. Studies have shown that Omicron carries more mutations than Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta, and wild‐type, facilitating immune escape and accelerating its transmission. This review focuses on the Omicron variant's origin, transmission, main biological features, subvariants, mutations, immune escape, vaccination, and detection methods. We also discuss the appropriate preventive and therapeutic measures that should be taken to address the new challenges posed by the Omicron variant. This review is valuable to guide the surveillance, prevention, and development of vaccines and other therapies for Omicron variants. It is desirable to develop a more efficient vaccine against the Omicron variant and take more effective measures to constrain the spread of the epidemic and promote public health. A diastereo‐ and enantioselective aza‐Mannich addition of oxazolones to α‐amino sulfones catalyzed by tertiary amine‐1‐phenylethyl thiourea based on cinchona structure has been developed. The reaction afforded the azlactone adducts bearing quaternary and tertiary stereogenic centers with high yields (up to 98 %) and moderate to excellent diastereo‐ and enantioselectivities (up to >99 : 1 dr and 96 % ee). A highly selective and efficient LC–MS/MS method was developed to determine the plasma concentration of magnolol, hesperidin, neohesperidin and geniposide following oral administration of Zhi‐Zi‐Hou‐Po decoction in normal and depressed rats. Plasma samples were pretreated by protein precipitation with methanol. Chromatographic separation was performed on an XTerra® MS C18 column using a gradient elution with a mobile phase composed of acetonitrile–0.1% aqueous formic acid. The proposed method was validated to be specific, accurate and precise for the analytes determination in plasma samples. The calibration curves displayed good linearity over definite concentration ranges for the analytes. The intra‐ and inter‐day precision of the proposed method at three different levels were all within <11.13% and the relative errors ranged from −8.46 to 8.93%. The recovery of the four compounds ranged from 82.72 to 89.08% and no apparent matrix effect was observed during sample analysis. After full validation, the established method was successfully applied for comparing the pharmacokinetics of four components between normal and depressed rats. The results showed that the AUC and Cmax of four analytes in depressed rats were significantly different from those in normal rats and might provide helpful information to guide the clinical use of Zhi‐Zi‐Hou‐Po to treat depression. Summary: Finding link/node‐disjoint paths between a pair of nodes is capable of providing Quality of Service and reliable routing which is very critical for mesh‐connected Network‐on‐Chip. State‐of‐art works usually aim at random topologies and multiple constraints. Therefore, it is difficult to optimize their time complexity. In this paper, MDPPIM (Manhattan‐distance‐constrained Disjoint Path Pair Problem in Incomplete Mesh) problem is presented based on Network‐on‐Chip application scenarios. Then, PCDP (Path‐Counting Disjoint Path) algorithm is proposed to solve the MDPPIM problem with low time complexity. Compared with previous disjoint path algorithms, PCDP algorithm does not have to use Dijkstra's algorithm to find a shortest path. It is optimized according to the feature of incomplete mesh such as the regularity of mesh and Manhattan‐distance constraint. Therefore, it is with low time complexity.
