Areas beyond national jurisdiction, or the high seas, are vital to life on Earth. However, the conservation of these areas, for example, through area‐based management tools (ABMTs), is challenging, particularly when accounting for global change. Using decision science, integrated population models, and a Critically Endangered seabird (Kuaka; Pelecanoides whenuahouensis) as a case study, we evaluated potential ABMTs in the high seas under global change and different governance structures, while accounting for uncertainty and imperfect compliance. Our study highlighted that global change in these areas will likely cause population declines of ∼60% by 2050. However, decisive conservation action could cost‐effectively address predicted declines, particularly when implemented as soon as possible and under the Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction Treaty. We illustrate how decision science can transparently navigate a complex seascape of management decisions and we advocate for its wider integration in the management of the largest sections of our planet, the high seas. Conservation management decisions are challenging due to multiple, competing values (objectives) held by various parties, complex management options (alternatives), potential irreversible consequences, ubiquitous uncertainty and opaque governance structures. These complications are exacerbated when target species are highly mobile, utilise aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems and interact with human interests. Even when decisions are made, these challenges may still inhibit management implementation. Decision analyses offer solutions, but are rarely applied in conservation management, especially for highly mobile species across ecosystems.We applied a formal decision analysis for the conservation management of a highly mobile seabird (Kuaka; Whenua Hou Diving Petrel; Pelecanoides whenuahouensis) across ecosystems. Together with Māori (Indigenous Peoples of Aotearoa New Zealand), government staff and industry representatives, we identified seven fundamental objectives and 11 potential alternatives. We predicted consequences of alternatives across objectives using state‐of‐the‐art statistical models, including integrated population models, and expert elicitations hosted through Shiny apps. We then used various decision‐analytical tools to weigh trade‐offs and identify the preferred alternative.The preferred alternative across objectives consisted of a combination of mitigation of vessel‐based light pollution, plant and competition management and inter‐island translocations. This alternative was predicted to provide the most effective conservation outcomes across values and ecosystems and was rapidly implemented in a stepwise fashion following this decision analysis.Synthesis and application. We illustrate that decision analyses provide inclusive environments for all participants despite diverse backgrounds and views, enable rational navigation of complex decision landscapes and facilitate transparent identification of preferred management options across all fundamental values, including Māori value systems and industry concerns. Additionally, we show that decision analyses can rapidly bridge the spaces between research and implementation. Investigations into niche dynamics and interspecific interactions are crucial to assess the vulnerability of threatened species to competition and environmental change. The Whenua Hou Diving Petrel Pelecanoides whenuahouensis is a critically endangered seabird, specializing in breeding in sand dunes in Aotearoa (New Zealand). The species is at risk from competition for burrow sites with the abundant, habitat‐generalist Common Diving Petrel Pelecanoides urinatrix chathamensis, among other terrestrial and near‐shore threats (storm‐induced erosion and vessel‐based light pollution). However, Whenua Hou Diving Petrel foraging niches at sea and associated threats are poorly understood. We sampled blood and feathers from both species on Whenua Hou (Codfish Island) during 2017–19 and used stable isotope (δ15N and δ13C) analyses to quantify foraging niche dynamics and interspecific interactions. During incubation periods, when birds are restricted by central place foraging, diving petrels exhibited clear niche segregation. Whenua Hou Diving Petrels were more generalist feeders with wider isotopic niches than Common Diving Petrels, which exhibited restricted isotopic niches and fed in neritic waters. During non‐breeding periods, foraging niches expanded, and segregation was reduced, as both species dispersed into the Southern Ocean. These patterns were largely consistent among years, despite varying climatic conditions. However, Common Diving Petrel foraging niches appeared to shrink during El Niño conditions, suggesting environmental sensitivity. In contrast, the consistently stable, generalist foraging niches of Whenua Hou Diving Petrels suggested potential limited sensitivity to competition and impacts of environmental change at sea. Seabird breeding success is known to reflect oceanic conditions. Gray‐faced petrels (Pterodroma gouldi) breeding on the east coast of Auckland, New Zealand, exhibit poor reproductive success and slow chick development compared to west coast conspecifics. This study mapped changes in physiological traits (corticosterone [CORT] and hematological parameters) indicative of sublethal stress in this Procellariiform species between the west coast (Ihumoana) and east coast (Hāwere) island colonies. We found adult gray‐faced petrels on the east coast to be lighter and, unlike west coast birds, exhibited an attenuation of response CORT levels between incubation and chick‐rearing phases. Such responses were also reflected in east coast chicks that were lighter and had higher feather CORT titers than west coast chicks. Measures of adult hematology and plasma biochemistry revealed significantly lower glucose levels in east coast birds and indicated that chick rearing is the most stressful phase of breeding for this species Combined; these results suggest that east coast birds are under greater nutritional stress and that parents appear to transfer the costs of poor foraging to their chicks to preserve their own condition, consequently increasing chick developmental stress. Our results suggest that any long‐term decrease in ocean conditions and/or climatic shifts would be more acutely felt by east coast chicks and potentially their parents, resulting in years of poor breeding success rates on a local scale. Artificial light at night (ALAN) is considered a major threat to biodiversity, yet impacts of offshore ALAN on seabirds remain poorly understood. Particularly understudied are deck strikes (collisions of seabirds with vessels due to ALAN‐induced disorientation). To infer deck strike risks to the critically endangered Whenua Hou Diving‐petrel (Pelecanoides whenuahouensis; WHDP), we estimated nightly vessel counts and associated probability of floodlight use in close proximity of their only breeding colony, number of WHDP commutes, duration of phenophases, and ultimately the cumulative exposure to floodlights using a Bayesian framework. The estimated nightly number of vessels was 0.76 (0.64–0.89), 31% (21%–38%) of which used floodlights. WHDPs were potentially exposed to 28.9 (19.7–39.7) floodlights per breeding period. There was no evidence for inter‐annual variation in vessel counts, floodlight use, or WHDP activity, despite varying environmental conditions. WHDP activity, and therefore risk, was highest during courtship and post‐guard. Yet, there was potential for deck strikes throughout the breeding period, which could impact WHDPs. We identify key research questions (likelihood of a deck strike occurring, survival of deck‐struck birds, and post‐release survival of deck‐struck birds). In the meantime, small behavioral changes of vessel operators could be a successful approach to protecting seabirds from offshore ALAN. Mercury (Hg) is a toxic metal that accumulates in organisms and biomagnifies along food webs; hence, long‐lived predators such as seabirds are at risk as a result of high Hg bioaccumulation. Seabirds have been widely used to monitor the contamination of marine ecosystems. In the present study, we investigated Hg concentrations in blood, muscle, and feathers of 7 procellariform seabirds breeding on the Chatham Islands, New Zealand. Using bulk and compound‐specific stable isotope ratios of carbon and nitrogen as a proxy of trophic position and distribution, we also tested whether Hg contamination is related to the species‐specific feeding ecology. Mercury exposure varied widely within the seabird community. The highest contaminated species, the Magenta petrel, had approximately 29 times more Hg in its blood than the broad‐billed prion, and approximately 35 times more Hg in its feathers than the grey‐backed storm petrel. Variations of Hg concentrations in blood and feathers were significantly and positively linked to feeding habitats and trophic position, highlighting the occurrence of efficient Hg biomagnification processes along the food web. Species and feeding habitats were the 2 main drivers of Hg exposure within the seabird community. The Pterodroma species had high blood and feather Hg concentrations, which can be caused by their specific physiology and/or because of their foraging behavior during the interbreeding period (i.e., from the Tasman Sea to the Humboldt Current system). These 2 threatened species are at risk of suffering detrimental effects from Hg contamination and further studies are required to investigate potential negative impacts, especially on their reproduction capability. Purpose: Having been overlooked for many years, research is now starting to take into account the directional distribution of neutron workplace fields. Existing neutron dosimetry instrumentation does not account for this directional distribution, resulting in conservative estimates of dose in neutron workplace fields (by around a factor of 2, although this is heavily dependent on the type of field). This conservatism could influence epidemiological studies on the health effects of radiation exposure. This paper reports on the development of an instrument which can estimate the effective dose of a neutron field, accounting for both the direction and the energy distribution. Methods: A 6Li-loaded scintillator was used to perform neutron assays at a number of locations in a 20 × 20 × 17.5 cm³ water phantom. The variation in thermal and fast neutron response to different energies and field directions was exploited. The modeled response of the instrument to various neutron fields was used to train an artificial neural network (ANN) to learn the effective dose and ambient dose equivalent of these fields. All experimental data published in this work were measured at the National Physical Laboratory (UK). Results: Experimental results were obtained for a number of radionuclide source based neutron fields to test the performance of the system. The results of experimental neutron assays at 25 locations in a water phantom were fed into the trained ANN. A correlation between neutron counting rates in the phantom and neutron fluence rates was experimentally found to provide dose rate estimates. A radionuclide source behind shadow cone was used to create a more complex field in terms of energy and direction. For all fields, the resulting estimates of effective dose rate were within 45% or better of their calculated values, regardless of energy distribution or direction for measurement times greater than 25 min. Conclusions: This work presents a novel, real-time, approach to workplace neutron dosimetry. Identification of breeding sites remains a critical step in species conservation, particularly in procellariiform seabirds whose threat status is of global concern. We designed and conducted an integrative radiotelemetry approach to uncover the breeding grounds of the critically endangered New Zealand Storm Petrel Fregetta maoriana ( NZSP), a species considered extinct before its rediscovery in 2003. Solar-powered automated radio receivers and hand-held telemetry were used to detect the presence of birds on three island groups in the Hauraki Gulf near Auckland, New Zealand. At least 11 NZSP captured and radiotagged at sea were detected at night near Te Hauturu-o-Toi/Little Barrier Island with the detection of an incubating bird leading to the discovery of the first known breeding site for this species. In total, four NZSP breeding burrows were detected under mature forest canopy and three adult NZSP and two NZSP chicks were ringed. Telemetry data indicated NZSP showed strong moonlight avoidance behaviour over the breeding site, had incubation shifts of approximately 5 days and had a breeding season extending from February to June/July, a different season from other Procellariiformes in the region. Radiotelemetry, in combination with rigorously collected field data on species distribution, offers a valuable technique for locating breeding grounds of procellariiform seabirds and gaining insights into breeding biology while minimizing disturbance to sensitive species or damage to fragile habitat. Our study suggests an avenue for other breeding ground searches in one of the most threatened avian Orders, and highlights the general need for information on the location of breeding sites and understanding the breeding biology in data-deficient birds. Quantitative magnetic resonance ( QMR) is a new technology for measuring the body composition (wet lean mass, fat mass, and total body water mass) of unrestrained and unanesthetized animals. We conducted a validation study using two species of crayfish (mass range 5.5-27 g), American lobsters (680-732 g), and Madagascar hissing cockroaches (6.5-14 g) to assess the utility of QMR for quantifying the body composition of crustaceans and other large arthropods. A comparison of crayfish, lobster, and cockroach wet lean, fat, and body water masses calculated by QMR with those obtained from the traditional chemical extraction method demonstrates that QMR is a valid technology for analysis of wet lean mass and body water. Fat mass could not be accurately predicted, although this might be improved with the use of a QMR analyzer designed specifically for animals of low fat content. QMR analysis allows rapid (<4 min) and non-destructive determination of body composition in field and lab environments, enabling researchers to conduct longitudinal studies and to increase the ethicality and practicality of studying rare or threatened species. The south Uralian foreland basin forms part of the giant, yet sparsely documented, PreCaspian salt tectonic province. The basin can potentially add much to the understanding of fluviolacustrine sedimentation within salt-walled minibasins, where the literature has been highly reliant on only a few examples (such as the Paradox Basin of Utah). This paper describes the Late Permian terrestrial fill of the Kul'chumovo salt minibasin near Orenburg in the south Urals in which sediments were deposited in a range of channel, overbank and lacustrine environments. Palaeomagnetic stratigraphy shows that, during the Late Permian, the basin had a relatively slow and uniform subsidence pattern with widespread pedogenesis and calcrete development. Angular unconformities or halokinetic sequence boundaries cannot be recognized within the relatively fine-grained fill, and stratigraphic and spatial variations in facies are therefore critical to understanding the subsidence history of the salt minibasin. Coarse-grained channel belts show evidence for lateral relocation within the minibasin while the development of a thick stack of calcrete hardpans indicates that opposing parts of the minibasin became largely inactive for prolonged periods (possibly in the order of one million years). The regular vertical stacking of calcrete hardpans within floodplain mudstones provides further evidence that halokinetic minibasin growth is inherently episodic and cyclical. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The flesh-footed shearwater Puffinus carneipes is a medium-sized shearwater and transequatorial migrant within the Pacific Ocean. We used archival data loggers to study the non-breeding migration and diving behaviour of three flesh-footed shearwaters following breeding in New Zealand. In early April, the birds migrated to the western North Pacific Ocean in 23±2 days, occupying core distributions within the Kuroshio/Oyashio transition system for 91±17 days. Subsequent movements were made into the Sea of Okhotsk prior to return migrations to New Zealand in mid September (19±1 days). Diving depths during migration (2.5±2.4 m), and in the western North Pacific (2.4±2.6 m) were shallower than during the onset of breeding (4.8±8.7 m). Non-breeding flesh-footed shearwaters occupy a region of high fisheries activity and the impact of these fisheries on adult survival in this declining species warrant further study. A lone petrel was shot from the decks of an Italian warship (the ‘Magenta’) while it was sailing the South Pacific Ocean in 1867, far from land. The species, unknown to science, was named the ‘Magenta petrel’ (Procellariiformes, Procellariidae, Pterodroma magentae). No other specimens of this bird were collected and the species it represented remained a complete enigma for over 100 years. We compared DNA sequence of the mitochondrial cytochrome b gene from the Magenta petrel to that of other petrels using phylogenetic methods and ancient DNA techniques. Our results strongly suggest that the Magenta petrel specimen is a Chatham Island taiko. Furthermore, given the collection location of the Magenta petrel, our finding indicates that the Chatham Island taiko forages far into the Pacific Ocean (near South America). Many rare and endangered species are difficult to locate, observe, and study. Consequently, many individuals, breeding pairs, and even populations of such species could remain undetected. Genetic markers can potentially be used to detect the existence of undiscovered individuals and populations, and we propose a method to do so that requires 3 conditions. First, sampling of the known population(s) of the target species must be comprehensive. Second, the species must display a reasonable level of philopatry and genetic structuring. Third, individuals must be able to be caught outside of breeding locations (e.g., at courtship or feeding areas, in flight), and the level of recapture must be reasonably high. We applied our method to the Chatham Island Taiko (Pterodroma magentae ), one of the world's most endangered seabirds. We sequenced the Taiko mitochondrial cytochrome b gene and both copies of a fragment of the duplicated domain I of the control region. Twenty-one haplotypes were revealed, including 4 (19%) not found in birds at known burrows. These results suggest there are more burrow groups yet to be located. The species is a pelagic gadfly petrel that inhabits land only in the breeding season during which it is nocturnal and nests in burrows. Taiko burrows are situated in dense forest in a remote area of Chatham Island, and are consequently difficult to locate and study. It is important that all Taiko burrows be discovered to enable monitoring and protection of the birds from exotic predators. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Chatham Island taiko Pterodroma magentae (tchaik) is one of the World's most endangered seabirds with a population size of between 120–150 individuals that includes only 8–15 breeding pairs. Molecular techniques were used to identify the sex of taiko, which is difficult to assign morphologically. Blood samples were obtained from almost the entire known living population and from some birds now thought to be dead. We report an approximately even sex ratio in taiko chicks and adults associated with breeding burrows, but a large male-biased ratio in non-breeding adult birds caught on the ground. This finding suggests that unpaired males may be having difficulty in attracting females to burrows and that this situation may be an example of the Allee effect, that reduced density of potential mates acts to decrease population productivity. Identification of the sex of taiko using a molecular technique has important implications for the conservation management of this critically endangered species, including the future transfer of taiko chicks to a predator-excluded breeding site. Comparisons among patterns exhibited by functionally distinct genetic markers have been widely used to infer the impacts of demography and selection in structuring genetic variation in natural populations. However, such multilocus comparisons remain an indirect evaluation of selection at particular candidate loci; ideally, the identification of a candidate gene by comparative genetic methodologies should be complemented by functional analyses and experimental manipulations of genotypes in the laboratory or field. We examined genotype frequency variation among replicated intertidal habitats at two spatial scales in the grazing snail Littorina obtusata. Both of the candidate allozyme markers varied predictably with environment, and these patterns were consistent at both spatial scales. Three of four reference loci were spatially homogeneous, but one microsatellite exhibited significant structure at both geographical and mesoscales. To initiate a direct examination of whether the observed genotype frequency variation at one of the candidate markers, mannose-6-phosphate isomerase (MPI), was impacted by differential survivorship of genotypes, we conducted a series of laboratory-based thermal stress assays using snails from two geographically disparate source populations. When snails were exposed to bouts of thermal/desiccation stress, patterns of mortality were nonrandom with respect to MPI genotype. Furthermore, patterns of mortality in the laboratory manipulation coincided with the observed distribution of genotypes in the field. The data suggest the operation of selection at the Mpi or a linked locus, but functional studies and further experimentation are required to establish the relationship between MPI genotype and fitness across heterogeneous intertidal environments. A paleomagnetic study of Paleocene, Cretaceous, and Jurassic units in the Precordillera of northern Chile (26°S to 27°S) demonstrate a complex pattern of crustal rotations. The region was selected to investigate the pattern of deformation associated with the Sierra Castillo-Agua Amarga Fault and its associated structural subdomains, which form part of the Domeyko Fault System, the fault system that controls much of the structure of the Chilean Precordillera. Paleocene lavas from the center of the study area pass a fold test, indicating the primary nature of the remanence in these rocks. A second group of lavas from the south has a similar formation mean inclination after tilt correction for a uniform dip, which coupled with the presence of reversals, suggests that these lavas also carry a primary remanence. The data indicate clockwise rotations of ∼35° and 42° respectively, for the two sampling localities. Three geographically separate areas of Lower Cretaceous red beds also reveal primary remanences based on the presence of sites with reversed polarity at two of the localities and an inclination-only fold test of the three locality mean directions for this formation. These sampling areas yield remanence directions that reveal 30° of counterclockwise and 31° of clockwise rotation as well as an area without statistically significant rotation. These data include the first well-constrained counterclockwise rotation to be recovered from rocks in the southern central Andes, although mapping suggests the block involved is of limited geographic extent. Jurassic strata failed to yield any reliable results. Overall, the data indicate a greater variability in the rotation pattern than has previously been observed in most comparable areas south of the Arica Deflection. The variation cannot be explained by large-scale rotation mechanisms, such as oroclinal bending or domino-style block rotation by widely separated transandean faults. Instead, the rotations are consistent spatially, and temporally and in their sense and magnitude with the Eocene transpressional deformation associated with the Domeyko Fault System; the deformational event that generated most of the important structures in the studied area. The data emphasize the significance of local tectonics in controlling rotations in this part of the south central Andes and the importance of understanding the local structure of regions sampled for paleomagnetic study. The possibility that alexithymia may be a culture-bound construct was evaluated by developing a Hindi version of the Twenty-Item Toronto Alexithymia Scale and assessing its psychometric properties in a sample of 285 normal young adults in India. The Hindi version of the scale (TAS-20-H) showed excellent cross-language equivalence with the English verison. In addition, the TAS-20-H demonstrated adequate internal consistency, good test-retest reliability, and a three-factor structure consistent with the three-factor model of the original scale. Recently, the alexithymia construct has emerged as a heuristically useful personality construct in the explanation of the pathogenesis of a variety of physical illnesses. Research that has evaluated the alexithymia construct, however, has been conducted with little attention to the psychometric properties of the various scales constructed to measure it. This study investigated the underlying dimensions and factor structure stability of the MMPI Alexithymia scale (MMPI-A). The MMPI-A was administered to 552 undergraduates, and the data then were split randomly into two samples. Factor analysis of both samples produced a three-factor solution with little theoretical relevancy to the alexithymia construct. Comparisons of the factor structures from the two samples revealed only moderate congruence, which indicates an unstable factor structure. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The purpose of this study was to develop a new Swedish translation of the twenty-item Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20) and to examine if the theoretical structure that underlies the factor structure of the English version of the TAS-20 could be recovered in this Swedish translation of the instrument. A sample of 157 undergraduate students of psychology was tested. Using confirmatory factor analysis, the previously established three-factor TAS-20 model was found to be replicable in this sample.
