The geopolymer catalyst supports utilized in the nuclear waste containers for the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station will be required to have high porosity and durability. This work presents the synthesis of a potassium and metakaolin‐based geopolymer and its performance upon dehydration. During water content measurements of the samples, it was seen that in the demolded samples, the water content quickly decreased to less than 30% within 7 days, while the samples that had the cap removed from the container retained more than 50% of the water after 28 days. The pore size distribution of the samples that were post‐cured at different temperatures up to 28 days did not vary greatly with respect to the average pore size. We can infer that structurally stable pores were formed in the first 4 days and were not affected by the post‐curing rate, which may be related to rheological properties and the drainage path of water or hydrogen gas during post‐curing. Tc L3-edge XANES spectra have been collected on powder samples of SrTcO3 (octahedral Tc4+) and NH4TcO4 (tetrahedral Tc7+) immobilized in an epoxy resin. Features in the Tc L3-edge XANES spectra are compared with the preedge feature of the Tc K-edge as well as other 4d transition metal L3-edges. Evidence of crystal field splitting is obvious in the Tc L3-edge, which is sensitive to the coordination number and oxidation state of the Tc cation. The Tc L3 absorption edge energy difference between SrTcO3 (Tc4+) and NH4TcO4 (Tc7+) shows that the energy shift at the Tc L3-edge is an effective tool for studying changes in the oxidation states of technetium compounds. The Tc L3-edge spectra are compared with those obtained fromMo and Ru oxide standards with various oxidation states and coordination environments. Most importantly, fitting the Tc L3-edge to component peaks can provide direct evidence of crystal field splitting that cannot be obtained from the Tc K-edge. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Trivalent Pu can be incorporated in the silicate apatite structure to form Ca[sub 2]Pu[sub 8](SiO[sub 4])[sub 6]O[sub 2] by sintering under reducing conditions, while the incorporation of tetravalent Pu in the Ca/rare earth sites in oxidizing or neutral conditions is limited to only 0.6 formula units (f.u.). The d-spacings and intensities of the X-ray pattern of hexagonally structured Ca[sub 2]Pus(SiO[sub 4])[sub 6]O[sub 2] after firing at 1250°C are given, and the a and c lattice parameters are 0.9561[sub 1] and 0.7028[sub 1] nm, respectively. The respective solid solubility limits of U and Hf in Ca[sub 2]Gd[sub 8-x](U/Hf)[sub x](SiO[sub 4])[sub 6]O[sub 2] apatite samples were 0.3 and 0.2 f.u. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
