It is urgently necessary for environmental resource utilization of copper slag with incremental quantities of stacked copper slag. In this paper, copper slag has been used as mineralizer and raw material to prepare silica refractory. The effect of copper slag on phase composition, microstructure, mechanical, and load deformation performance has been investigated. The results indicate that the components of copper slag as mineralizer promote the formation of tridymite. Simultaneously, copper slag promotes the densification of silica refractory and glass phase increases due to the mineralizer and impurities in copper slag. The increased glass phase promotes the cold crushing strength and cold modulus of rupture for silica refractory, while the hot modulus of rupture slightly decreases by 1.5 MPa for 6 wt% copper slag. In addition, the load softening temperature and high‐temperature creep attains 1632.6°C and ‐5.5%, respectively. It is estimated that the potential application of silica refractory with copper slag on upper part of copper stove (low‐temperature and low‐load region) is acceptable in consideration of environmental utilization of solid waste. In August 2015, the Curiosity Mars rover discovered tridymite, a high‐temperature silica polymorph, in Gale crater. The existing model for its occurrence suggests erosion and detrital sedimentation from silicic volcanic rocks in the crater rim or central peak. The chemistry and mineralogy of the tridymite‐bearing rocks, however, are not consistent with silicic volcanic material. Using data from Curiosity, including chemical composition from the Alpha Particle X‐ray Spectrometer, mineralogy from the CheMin instrument, and evolved gas and isotopic analyses from the Sample Analysis at Mars instrument, we show that the tridymite‐bearing rocks exhibit similar chemical patterns with silica‐rich alteration halos which crosscut the stratigraphy. We infer that the tridymite formed in‐place through hydrothermal processes and show additional chemical and mineralogical results from Gale crater consistent with hydrothermal activity occurring after sediment deposition and lithification. Intergrowth oxides, like Aurivillius, Ruddlesden–Popper phase, comprise functional layers and exhibit interesting physical properties. The hitherto known intergrowth structures mainly were composed of closed‐packing of oxygen ions, and it is very challenging to develop new types of intergrowth structures. We proposed the possible match between the tridymite and grossite, both of which are purely tetrahedra‐based structures. We synthesized Ca2PbGa8O15 ((Ca0.5Pb0.5Ga2O4)2(CaGa4O7)) and its structure was solved by ab‐initio method. Pb2+ is vitally important to stabilize this first example of tetrahedra‐based intergrowth oxide. The appropriate size difference between Pb2+ and Ca2+ causes the layered type cationic ordering, and reduced the thermodynamic potential, in addition, the high hybridization between Pb 6s6p and O 2p orbitals further consolidate the covalency of the tetrahedra‐base framework. Determination of the crystal structures of low‐temperature tridymite and cristobalite using single‐crystal XRD has been challenging because they generally occur as metastable fine‐grained crystals in the geological environment. Therefore, using powder diffraction and scattering techniques is critical to study the low‐temperature crystals. Synchrotron powder X‐ray diffraction (XRD), pair distribution function (PDF) and transmission electron microscopy were used to investigate the structure of orthorhombic tridymite with C2221 symmetry and tetragonal cristobalite with P41212 symmetry, including their anisotropic atomic displacement parameters (ADPs). Rietveld refinement was used to determine the unit‐cell parameters, fractional coordinates and isotropic atomic displacement parameters (Uiso) of the tridymite and cristobalite. The PDF method was used to determine ADPs for each atom. The results suggest that the crystal structure with high quality ADP values can be obtained using the combined methods of XRD and PDF analyses. The method can be used for characterizing crystals that are not suitable for single‐crystal XRD. Anisotropic atomic displacement parameters of orthorhombic tridymite and tetragonal cristobalite can be determined accurately using the combined methods of powder XRD and pair distribution function analysis. EET 87720 is a polymict ureilite breccia known to contain numerous nonindigenous fragments. We have discovered a microgranitic clast in an interior chip of Elephant Moraine ( EET) 87720. The clast consists of a granophyre-like intergrowth of a pure SiO2 phase (tridymite) and albite, mantling a zoned oligoclase phenocryst. In the intergrowth, the tridymite occurs as thin elongate vermicular blebs within larger albite crystals. The granophyre-like intergrowth and the oligoclase phenocryst share a common margin, suggesting that the clast was originally part of a larger fragment. An estimate of its bulk composition is equivalent to that of granite (77 wt% SiO2). Patches of high-Si K-bearing glass occur interstitially within the clast; they have high concentrations of SO3 (11-12 wt%) and contain Cl (0.6 wt%), suggesting that the clast formed on a volatile-rich parent body perhaps resembling early Mars. The mean oxygen isotope composition of the feldspar and tridymite in the clast is very different from the oxygen isotope compositions of ureilites, and is similar to those of silicate inclusions in IIE and IVA irons. Thus, the clast is not indigenous to the ureilite parent body, but it provides evidence for the formation of evolved melts on an unknown parent body in the early solar system. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Sacramento Wash 005 (SaW) 005, Meteorite Hills 00428 (MET) 00428, and Mount Howe 88403 (HOW) 88403 are S-rich Fe,Ni-rich metal meteorites with fine metal structures and homogeneous troilite. We compare them with the H-metal meteorite, Lewis Cliff 88432. Phase diagram analyses suggest that SaW 005, MET 00428, and HOW 88403 were liquids at temperatures above 1350 °C. Tridymite in HOW 88403 constrains formation to a high-temperature and low-pressure environment. The morphology of their metal-troilite structures may suggest that MET 00428 cooled the slowest, SaW 005 cooled faster, and HOW 88403 cooled the quickest. SaW 005 and MET 00428 contain H-chondrite like silicates, and SaW 005 contains a chondrule-bearing inclusion that is texturally and compositionally similar to H4 chondrites. The compositional and morphological similarities of SaW 005 and MET 00428 suggest that they are likely the result of impact processing on the H-chondrite parent body. SaW 005 and MET 00428 are the first recognized iron- and sulfide-rich meteorites, which formed by impact on the H-chondrite parent body, which are distinct from the IIE-iron meteorite group. The morphological and chemical differences of HOW 88403 suggest that it is not from the H-chondrite body, although it likely formed during an impact on a chondritic parent body. The incommensurately modulated crystal structure of low SiO2 tridymite was refined based on single-crystal X-ray diffraction data in the superspace group Cc(α0γ)0. The data set consists of 885 main reflections, 1751 first-order, 924 second-order and 119 third-order satellite reflections with / > 3σ(I). The modulation is mainly made up from cooperative twistings of the rigid SiO4 tetrahedra. Two orders of displacement waves are used to describe the modulation of the Si atoms and three orders for the O atoms. The maximal amplitudes are ca 0.6 Å. O atoms bridging pairs of tetrahedra in cis and trans configurations show different positional modulation patterns. The anisotropic displacement parameters (ADPs) are also modulated. We propose a new mechanism for the formation of some polygonal fault arrays. Seismically imaged opal-A (biogenic silica) to opal-CT (cristobalite and tridymite) diagenetic boundaries from two regions offshore of Norway have developed regular wavelength patterns. The pattern consists of cell-shaped elevations that are 200–2600 m wide and up to 200 m high, separated by troughs. The cells represent regions that undergo diagenesis at shallower burial depths, earlier than adjacent areas. The chemical change leads to mechanical compaction and porosity reduction; therefore subsidence occurs above the cells in the overburden. Roughly circular depressions form above the cells, and a network of folds form above inter-cell areas. Networks of normal faults form on the crests and margins of the folds as a result of flexure during the folding. The progressive lateral growth of the cells causes the depressions to widen and intervening folds to narrow resulting in new differential compaction-induced faults to form with variable strike orientations. Lateral and vertical growth of cells leads to cells conjoining and the re-establishment of a uniform planar reaction boundary. This novel but simple mechanism can explain some polygonal fault arrays that form above opal-A to opal-CT reaction boundaries and in these settings the mechanism should be considered in addition to syneresis, density inversion or low coefficients of residual friction which are the most commonly cited drivers for polygonal fault systems. The crystal structure of a strontium europium aluminate, Sr0.864Eu0.136Al2O4, with a novel hexagonal form was investigated by a combination of Rietveld analysis and the maximum-entropy method (MEM) with synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction data. The electron density image calculated by the MEM/ Rietveld method revealed that the apical oxygen ion in the AlO4 tetrahedron has a broad distribution corresponding to an extraordinarily large atomic displacement parameter. This structure could be expressed by a split-atom model, with which the Rietveld refinement gave Rwp = 2.99% and RB = 4.16%. Subsequently, MEM-based pattern fitting (MPF) decreased the R factors to Rwp = 2.81 % and RB = 2.34% and the electron density image clearly showed that the apical oxygen ions of the AlO4 tetrahedra are split over three sites around a threefold axis involving an elongated distribution of the residual O ions along the c axis. These results suggest that AlO4 tetrahedra in Sr0.864Eu0.136Al2O4 are orientationally disordered. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A model was derived for the temperature-dependent phase transition between the high-temperature polymorphs of quartz (P6[sub4]22) and tridymite (P6[sub3]/mmc). Only the Si framework is considered, and the transformation can be described as a deformation of a homogenous sphere packing with three contacts per sphere type 3/10/hl) in the common subgroup P6[sub4]22 of P6[sub4]22 and (P6[sub3]/mmc). The structure and composition of processed rice hull ash were studied to better understand its adsorption of the soy oil components, lutein and free fatty acids. The silica-rich ash was composed largely of low order cristobalite and tridymite in the form of opal CT, with variable particle size. On heating of the ash there was conversion to a more ordered form of opal C, fusing of particles, and loss of potassium. Acid washing, following heating, also removed potassium and slightly reduced particle size further. Crystal form, particle size, particle fusion and potassium content may be important factors influencing ash adsorption of soy oil components. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Crystals of KAlSiO4- O1 (potassium aluminium silicate) were synthesized using a flux method and analysed utilizing single-crystal X-ray diffraction and electron microprobe analysis. Both methods confirm that the crystals are nonstoichiometric according to K1− xAl1− xSi1+ xO4 with x = 0.04 (1). KAlSiO4- O1 is closely related to the stuffed derivatives of tridymite, although the topology of the Si/Al-ordered framework is different. Six-membered rings of UUDDUD and UUUDDD (U = up and D = down; ratio 2:1) configurations are present in layers parallel to the ab plane. In contrast, the framework of tridymite exhibits UDUDUD rings.
