This study sought to evaluate the perceptions of pressure injury (PI) management staff regarding skin failure (SF). Additionally, an analysis of influencing factors based on the collected data was conducted to establish a foundation for targeted SF training. A descriptive, cross‐sectional survey was undertaken in October–November 2023, utilising a convenience sampling method involving selected management staff of PI from 16 provinces in China. A total of 501 nursing participants were included, exhibiting an overall perception level that was moderately low. Although the majority were aware of the possibility of SF (n = 417, 83.23%), only 60% reported an understanding of the fundamentals of SF, with the lowest level of comprehension observed in differentiating between SF and PI (n = 212, 42.31%). Overall attitudes were generally positive. Regarding behaviour, active learning was more prevalent (n = 340, 67.86%), but training is less (n = 287, 57.29%). Family education (n = 401, 80.04%) and nursing record monitoring (n = 426, 85.03%) demonstrated better behaviour. Further analysis revealed that training (t = 13.937, p < 0.001) and professional title (F = 4.681, p = 0.010) had a significant effect on participants' perceptions. These findings underscore that there remains a substantial lack of perception about SF amongst participants. Globally, dams fragment river networks, threatening migratory fishes which require access to distinct habitats to complete their life cycles. Efforts to understand how cumulative effects of multiple dams affect migratory fishes across large regions, such as a country or continent, could help to identify locations for connectivity‐enhancing actions to conserve migratory fishes. To address this, we evaluated cumulative effects of dams on migratory fishes in rivers across nine ecoregions of the conterminous USA. First, using fish data from thousands of sites (N = 45,989), we summarized ecoregional patterns in assemblages, quantifying the number of migratory species comprising assemblages, showing the prominence of potamodromous species across the large region as well as differences in migratory life history traits among ecoregions. Next, we compared the importance of a set of river network fragmentation metrics that captured influences of multiple dams in networks versus other anthropogenic landscape stressors and natural landscape factors that impact migratory fishes by ecoregion. We found that migratory fishes were more sensitive to cumulative dam effects than other stressors including urbanization and agriculture in the eastern USA. To further identify specific effects of environmental variables on potamodromous fishes, we conducted Boosted Regression Trees analysis in the eastern ecoregions. Our results suggested that the key natural influences on river fishes included catchment area as well as river baseflow and air temperature, suggesting that migratory fishes may be affected by changing climate. Additionally, we found that downstream dams were more influential than other human stressors to potamodromous fishes, underscoring the importance of enhancing connectivity within river networks to conserve migratory fishes. Collectively, our results provide new insights in identifying threats to migratory fish species across the USA, providing information that can aid in conserving this vulnerable but ecologically and socioeconomically important group of fishes. The uses of granular hydrogels to assemble macroscopic bulk hydrogels display numerous distinct advantages. However, prior assembly of bulk hydrogels is accomplished by interparticle linking strategy, which compromised mechanical property and thermal stability under hostile conditions. To expand their applications as engineering soft materials, self‐regenerative granular hydrogels via a seamless integrating approach to regenerate bulk hydrogels is highly desirable. Herein, covalent regenerative granular hydrogels (CRHs) are prepared at low‐temperature synthetic conditions and re‐construct bulk seamless hydrogels at high‐temperature aqueous environments. The re‐formed bulk hydrogels display rubber‐like viscoelastic behaviors over a wide range of temperatures from 90 to 150 °C, where the covalent re‐crosslinking reactions homogeneously occurr along the periphery and in the matrix of granular hydrogels, accounting for the increased structural integrity at high temperatures. The bulk hydrogel shows increased elasticity and long‐term thermal integrity at 150 °C for more than six months in the confined fractures. Moreover, regenerative granular CRH‐based bulk hydrogels significantly improve mechanical robustness under destructive pressure. Thus, high temperature water induced regenerative granular hydrogels present the paradigm to treat engineering scenarios such as large fractures for hydraulic fracturing, drilling operation, and disproportionate permeability reduction under extremely hostile conditions during subsurface energy recovery. Aim: Migratory freshwater fishes are those that must access discrete habitats to complete their life cycles. Freshwater fish migrations occur around the world and provide numerous ecosystem services for humans and natural systems; however, many migratory species are in decline globally. A limiting factor to successfully conserve freshwater migratory fishes is that the migratory life histories of many species are unknown or only partially described. To provide researchers with critical and comprehensive information to conserve migratory fishes, we developed the North American Freshwater Migratory Fish Database (NAFMFD). Location: Canada, Mexico and the United States. Taxon: Freshwater fish. Methods: To develop this database, we assigned migratory status, pattern and behaviour to a comprehensive list of freshwater fish species found throughout North America. We assembled the database which included assignments (i.e. migratory status, pattern and behaviour) as well as the sources used to make the assignments. Researchers and managers from across North America reviewed the database for completeness and accuracy on the migratory life histories of fishes. Results: The database synthesizes current knowledge of migratory status, pattern and behaviour of native and non‐native freshwater fishes throughout North America, including 1250 species representing 79 families and 325 genera. Results showcase the diversity of migratory life histories of freshwater fishes on the continent, including that at least 25% of North American freshwater fishes are migratory, 23% are non‐migratory and 44% have undetermined migratory status. Main conclusions: NAFMFD improves the quality of migratory data accessible to researchers, which supports a more holistic understanding of the threats encountered by migratory fishes, including habitat fragmentation. The approach we used in developing NAFMFD can provide guidance for developing similar databases in other regions. Precise simulation of the propagation of surface water waves, especially when involving breaking wave, takes a significant place in computational fluid dynamics. Because of the strong nonlinear properties, the treatment of large surface deformation of free surface flow has always been a challenging work in the development of numerical models. In this paper, the moving particle semi-implicit (MPS) method, an entirely Lagrangian method, is modified to simulate wave motion in a 2-D numerical wave flume preferably. In terms of consecutive pressure distribution, a new and simple free surface detection criterion is proposed to enhance the free surface recognition in the MPS method. In addition, a revised gradient model is deduced to diminish the effect of nonuniform particle distribution and then to reduce the numerical wave attenuation occurring in the original MPS model. The applicability and stability of the improved MPS method are firstly demonstrated by the calculation of hydrostatic problem. It is revealed that these modifications are effective to suppress the pressure oscillation, weaken the local particle clustering, and boost the stability of numerical algorithm. It is then applied to investigate the propagation of progressive waves on a flat bed and the wave breaking on a mild slope. Comparisons with the analytical solutions and experimental results indicate that the improved MPS model can give better results about the profiles and heights of surface waves in contrast with the previous MPS models. Ecosystem-based management of the Laurentian Great Lakes, which spans both the United States and Canada, is hampered by the lack of consistent binational watersheds for the entire Basin. Using comparable data sources and consistent methods, we developed spatially equivalent watershed boundaries for the binational extent of the Basin to create the Great Lakes Hydrography Dataset ( GLHD). The GLHD consists of 5,589 watersheds for the entire Basin, covering a total area of approximately 547,967 km2, or about twice the 247,003 km2 surface water area of the Great Lakes. The GLHD improves upon existing watershed efforts by delineating watersheds for the entire Basin using consistent methods; enhancing the precision of watershed delineation using recently developed flow direction grids that have been hydrologically enforced and vetted by provincial and federal water resource agencies; and increasing the accuracy of watershed boundaries by enforcing embayments, delineating watersheds on islands, and delineating watersheds for all tributaries draining to connecting channels. In addition, the GLHD is packaged in a publically available geodatabase that includes synthetic stream networks, reach catchments, watershed boundaries, a broad set of attribute data for each tributary, and metadata documenting methodology. ABSTRACT Fisheries resource conservation is a national priority in the USA because of the high economic and social value of fish to society. Landscape spatial planning to identify focal areas for conservation of fishes is an important step to targeted site-level interventions to protect or restore fish habitats, because it can provide a strategic approach to guide conservation efforts. Computerized spatial planning algorithms that identify networks of sites that meet user-specified targets for species representation indicate locations with favourable conditions for fish protection., Here a commonly used systematic planning software, Marxan, was employed with previously published fish range and human disturbance predictions to define a network of conservation focal areas for rivers in Michigan. This network focused on large-bodied species, small-bodied species, species of greatest conservation need (SGCN), and all species together., Depending on the scenario, the networks identified comprised between 14 and 20% of Michigan stream length in over 1700 focal areas ranging from 6 to 8 km in average length. Mean focal area sizes were much larger for the Upper Peninsula than the Lower Peninsula. Approximately 35% of the focal areas defined flowed through already protected lands, but less than 5% had upstream catchments that were secure within protected areas. There was a 45% overlap in the focal areas selected for the large- and small-bodied fish and SGCN., The rivers defined may serve as appropriate core areas for fish conservation. Resultant maps show locations with a high natural potential to conserve all of Michigan's native fish species, and can serve as a reference point for regionalization of comprehensive state-wide planning efforts for fish conservation. The impacts of differences in watershed land uses, and differences in seasonality on benthic macroinvertebrate communities, were evaluated in 12 stream sites within the Xitiaoxi River watershed, China, from April 2009 to January 2010. The composition of macroinvertebrate community differed significantly among three land use types. Forested sites were characterized by high taxa richness, diversity and the benthic-index of biotic integrity (B-IBI), while farmland and urban disturbed stream sites presented contrary patterns. The percentage of urban land use, conductivity, dissolved oxygen, ammonia nitrogen and total phosphorus were the major drivers for the variations. The land use related water quality stress gradients of the four sampling seasons were determined by means of four independent Principal Component Analyses. The responses of macroinvertebrate community metrics, to anthropogenic stressors, were explored using Spearman Rank Correlation analyses. All the selected metrics, including total numbers of taxa, numbers of Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera and Trichoptera taxa, percentage of non-insect abundance, percentage of scrapers abundance, Pielou's evenness index, Simpson diversity index, and the Benthic Index of Biotic Integrity were correlated significantly with environmental gradients (PC1) in autumn. In other seasons such correlations were less pronounced. Our results imply that autumn is the optimal time to sample macroinvertebrate communities, and to conduct water quality biomonitoring in this subtropical watershed. We related fish species patterns and landscape-scale environmental data from 216 Michigan lakes to identify repeatable types of fish assemblages, identify environmental factors related to assemblage types, and classify fish assemblages in unsampled lakes. Multivariate regression tree modeling of fish species abundances identified six assemblage types that were explained by degree-days during the ice-free period, lake surface area, and mean lake surface temperature. Warmwater species dominated southern lakes, while coolwater and coldwater species had higher abundances in northern lakes. Coolwater species were present in large southern lakes, whereas warmwater species were excluded from northern lakes that had low mean surface temperatures or low degree-days. These results suggest that patterns of lake fish assemblages are shaped by differences in climate as well as lake-specific differences in surface temperature regimes and in vertical availability of coldwater and coolwater habitats. Because we related fish patterns to readily available landscape-level data, our approach can be used to characterize fish assemblages in all lakes across broad geographic extents. Fisheries management programs, such as the National Fish Habitat Action Plan (NFHAP), urgently need a nationwide spatial framework and database for health assessment and policy development to protect and improve riverine systems. To meet this need, we developed a spatial framework and database using National Hydrography Dataset Plus (I-.100,000-scale); http://www.horizon-systems.com/nhdplus). This framework uses interconfluence river reaches and their local and network catchments as fundamental spatial river units and a series of ecological and political spatial descriptors as hierarchy structures to allow users to extract or analyze information at spatial scales that they define. This database consists of variables describing channel characteristics, network position/connectivity, climate, elevation, gradient, and size. It contains a series of catchment-natural and human-induced factors that are known to influence river characteristics. Our framework and database assembles aü river reaches and their descriptors in one place for the first time for the conterminous United States. This framework and database provides users with the capability of adding data, conducting analyses, developing management scenarios and regulation, and tracking management progresses at a variety of spatial scales. Water resource managers are frequently interested in river and stream classification systems to generalize stream conditions and establish management policies over large spatial scales. We used fish assemblage data from 745 river valley segments to develop a two-level, river valley segment-scale classification system of rivers and streams throughout Michigan. Regression tree analyses distinguished 10 segment types based on mean July temperature and network catchment area and 26 segment types when channel gradient was also considered. Nonmetric multidimensional scaling analyses suggested that fish assemblages differed among segment types but were only slightly influenced by channel gradient. Species that were indicative of specific segment types generally had habitat requirements that matched segment attributes. A test of classification strength using fish assemblage data from an additional 77 river valley segments indicated that the classification system performed significantly better than random groupings of river valley segments. Our classification system for river valley segments overcomes several weaknesses of the classifications previously used in Michigan, and our approach may prove beneficial for developing classifications elsewhere. The use of model-predicted, local-scale habitat data as inputs in analyses intended to evaluate multiscale fish assemblage-habitat relationships in streams has become increasingly common as the scale at which such studies are conducted has increased. We used fish assemblage and habitat data from 208 wadeable streams in Wisconsin and Michigan to determine whether model-predicted habitat data would yield results similar to those of field-measured data in multiscale analyses of fish assemblage-habitat relationships. Predictions of local habitat features from landscape variables were generated by means of generalized additive modeling with likelihood-based boosting. Relationships between fish assemblage measures and landscape and local habitat features were studied via partial constrained multivariate ordination analyses. The total variation explained in the fish assemblage data sets was similar for model-predicted local habitat features and field-measured data, as was the proportion of variation explained that was due independently to local and regional (i.e., landscape) habitat features. We observed dissimilar results in the magnitude of ordination scores for local habitat features and the directional relationships between local habitat ordination scores and individual species and assemblage metric scores. Our findings indicate that model-predicted, local-scale habitat data can be useful for evaluating the relative strengths of local and regional habitat features in structuring fish assemblages, but caution may be necessary when evaluating species-habitat or assemblage metric-habitat relationships. We used temperature and fish data from streams across Michigan and Wisconsin to estimate upper thermal tolerance limits for brook trout and brown trout . Tolerance limits were estimated for the maximum daily mean temperature (MEANT), maximum daily maximum temperature (MAXT), and maximum daily temperature range (RNGT) at exposure lengths of 1, 3, 7, 14, 21, 28, 35, 42, 49, 56, and 63 d. We found no difference in the upper thermal tolerance limit for brook and brown trout. For time periods of 1-14 d, the upper temperatures tolerated by trout decreased rapidly from 25.3°C to 22.5°C for MEANT and from 27.6°C to 24.6°C for MAXT. For time periods from 21 to 63 d, the upper temperatures tolerated by trout declined more gradually from 22.1°C to 21.0°C for MEANT and from 24.2°C to 22.9°C for MAXT. The 7-d upper tolerance limit was 23.3°C for MEANT and 25.4°C for MAXT. The maximum RNGT tolerated by trout varied as a function of mean temperature and length of exposure. Our findings suggest that chronic temperature effects as well as temperature fluctuation play an important role in limiting salmonid distributions and therefore should be considered when developing management objectives and water quality standards. We examined relations between the amounts and spatial patterns of urban land cover and fish assemblages, physical habitat, base flow, and water temperature at 39 sites in small, coldwater trout streams in Wisconsin and Minnesota. The amount of connected impervious surface area in the watershed was negatively correlated with a fish-based coldwater index of biotic integrity (IBI), catches of all coldwater and coolwater fishes and trout, and the percentage of intolerant fish; it was positively correlated with fish species richness and the percentage of tolerant fish. Nonlinear models were developed by means of 90% quantile regression to predict the maximum possible IBI score, abundance of trout, and percentage of intolerant fish at a given level of imperviousness. At a connected imperviousness of less than about 6% for a watershed, all three variables could have high values, whereas at a connected imperviousness above 11% the values were inevitably low. Between 6% and 11%, minor changes in urbanization could result in major changes in stream fishes. Canonical correspondence analysis identified water temperature and base flow as the key instream habitat factors explaining stream fish assemblages patterns. The percentage of connected impervious area in the watershed had a positive, linear relation with water temperature and a negative, nonlinear relation with base flow, suggesting pathways by which urbanization affected fish assemblages. Partial redundancy analysis indicated that land cover within 30 m of the stream channel explained considerably more variance in fish assemblages and instream habitat and physical conditions than land cover beyond 30 m. Our study suggests that low levels of urban development can damage coldwater stream systems. Development strategies that protect the riparian area and minimize imperviousness may reduce this damage. Summary 1. We used 94 sites within the Northern Lakes and Forests ecoregion spanning Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan to identify environmental variables at the catchment, reach and riparian scales that influence stream macroinvertebrates. Redundancy analyses (RDA) found significantly influential variables within each scale and compared their relative importance in structuring macroinvertebrate assemblages. 2. Environmental variables included landcover, geology and groundwater delivery estimates at the catchment scale, water chemistry, channel morphology and stream habitat at the reach scale, and landcover influences at three distances perpendicular to the stream at the riparian scale. Macroinvertebrate responses were characterised with 22 assemblage attributes, and the relative abundance and presence/absence of 66 taxa. 3. Each scale defined macroinvertebrates along an erosional to depositional gradient. Wisconsin's macroinvertebrate index of biotic integrity, Ephemeroptera–Plecoptera–Trichoptera taxa and erosional taxa corresponded with forest streams, whereas organic pollution tolerant, Chironomidae and depositional taxa corresponded with wetland streams. Reach scale analyses defined the gradient similarly as dissolved oxygen and wide, shallow channels (erosional) opposed instream macrophytes and pool habitats (depositional). Riparian forests within 30 m of the stream coincided with an erosional assemblage and biotic integrity. 4. Next, we combined all significant environmental variables across scales to compare the relative influence of each spatial scale on macroinvertebrates. Partial RDA procedures described how much of the explained variance was attributable to each spatial scale and each interrelated scale combination. 5. BSTRACT: Macroinvertebrates were used to assess the impact of urbanization on stream quality across a gradient of watershed imperviousness in 43 southeastern Wisconsin streams. The percentage of watershed connected imperviousness was chosen as the urbanization indicator to examine impact of urban land uses on macroinvertebrate communities. Most urban land uses were negatively correlated with the Shannon diversity index, percent of pollution intolerant Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera, and Trichoptera individuals, and generic richness. Nonurban land uses were positively correlated with these same metrics. The Hilsenhoff biotic index indicated that stream quality declined with increased urbanization. Functional feeding group metrics varied across a gradient of urbanization, suggesting changes in stream quality. Proportions of collectors and gatherers increased, while proportions of filterers, scrapers, and shredders decreased with increased watershed imperviousness. This study demonstrated that urbanization severely degraded stream macroinvertebrate communities, hence stream quality. Good stream quality existed where imperviousness was less than 8 percent, but less favorable assessments were inevitable where imperviousness exceeded 12 to 20 percent. BSTRACT: We evaluated the effectiveness of watershed-scale implementations of best-management practices (BMPs) for improving habitat and fish attributes in two coldwater stream systems in Wisconsin. We sampled physical habitat, water temperature, and fish communities in multiple paired treatment and reference streams before and after upland (barnyard runoff controls, manure storage, contour plowing, reduced tillage) and riparian (stream bank fencing, sloping, limited rip-rapping) BMP installation in the treatment subwatersheds. In Spring Creek, BMPs significantly improved overall stream habitat quality, bank stability, instream cover for fish, abundance of cool- and coldwater fishes, and abundance of all fishes. Improvements were most pronounced at sites with riparian BMPs. Water temperatures were consistently cold enough to support coldwater fishes such as trout (Salmonidae) and sculpins (Cottidae) even before BMP installation. We observed the first-time occurrence of naturally reproduced brown trout ( Salmo trutta) in Spring Creek, indicating that the stream condition had been improved to be able to partially sustain a trout population. In Eagle Creek and its tributary Joos Creek, limited riparian BMPs led to localized gains in overall habitat quality, bank stability, and water depth. However, because few upland BMPs were installed in the subwatershed there were no improvements in water temperature or the quality of the fish community. Temperatures remained marginal for coldwater fish throughout the study. Our results demonstrate that riparian BMPs can improve habitat conditions in Wisconsin streams, but cannot restore coldwater fish communities if there is insufficient upland BMP implementation. BSTRACT: We compared watershed land-use and fish community data between the 1970s and 1990s in 47 small streams in southeastern Wisconsin. Our goal was to quantify effects of increasing urbanization on stream fishes in what had been a predominantly agricultural region. In the 43 test watersheds, mean surface coverage by agricultural lands decreased from 54 percent to 43 percent and urban lands increased from 24 percent to 31 percent between 1970 and 1990. Agriculture dominated the four reference watersheds, but neither agriculture (65-59 percent) nor urban (4.4-4.8 percent) land-uses changed significantly in those watersheds during the study period. From the 1970s to the 1990s the mean number of fish species for the test stream sites decreased 15 percent, fish density decreased 41 percent, and the index of biotic integrity (IBI) score dropped 32 percent. Fish community attributes at the four reference sites did not change significantly during the same period, although density was substantially lower in the 1990s. For both the 1970s and 1990s test sites, numbers of fish species and IBI scores were positively correlated with watershed percent agricultural land coverage and negatively correlated with watershed urban land uses, as indexed by percent effective connected imperviousness. Numbers of fish species per site and IBI scores were highly variable below 10 percent imperviousness, but consistently low above 10 percent. Sites that had less than 10 percent imperviousness and fewer than 10 fish species in the 1970s suffered the greatest relative increase in imperviousness and decline in species number over the study period. Our findings are consistent with previous studies that have found strong negative effects of urban land uses on stream ecosystems and a threshold of environmental damage at about 10 percent imperviousness. We conclude that although agricultural land uses often degrade stream fish communities, agricultural land impacts are generally less severe than those from urbanization on a per-unit-area basis.
