Background Methods Results Conclusions Nutritional risk index (NRI) and carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) are useful prognostic markers in colorectal cancer (CRC); however, the prognostic value of a combination of the NRI and CEA, namely, the NRI and CEA score (NCS), needs further investigation.Stage I‐III CRC patients were collected and then divided into three subgroups by counting the NCS: NCS 1: high NRI with normal CEA; NCS 2: high NRI with elevated CEA or low NRI with normal CEA; and NCS 3: low NRI with elevated CEA. The differences in outcome, counted as disease‐free survival (DFS) and overall survival (OS), were tested among the subgroups.A total of 285 patients were enrolled, with 108 in NCS 1, 118 in NCS 2 and 59 in NCS 3. Patient features, including age, tumour deposit, T stage, N stage and TNM stage, were significantly different in the NCS subgroups. Both the DFS (log‐rank = 26.06, P<0.001) and OS (log‐rank = 39.10, P<0.001) were significant in different NCS subgroups, even in maximum tumour diameter ≤4 cm cases (DFS: log‐rank = 21.42, P<0.001; OS: log‐rank = 30.95, P<0.001), and NCS 1 patients displayed the best outcome compared with the rest of the subgroups. A surgical site infection (SSI) is one of the most common complications of spinal surgery. Malnutrition has also been linked to SSI after other surgical procedures. However, whether malnutrition is a risk factor for SSI after spinal surgery remains controversial. Therefore, we performed a meta‐analysis to comprehensively evaluate the relationship between malnutrition and SSI. Relevant studies of the correlation between malnutrition and SSI were retrieved from the Cochrane Library, EMBASE, PubMed, Web of Science, China National Knowledge Infrastructure and Wanfang Data from database inception to 21 May 2023. Two reviewers independently assessed the included studies, and a meta‐analysis was performed using STATA 17.0 software. A total of 24 articles with 179 388 patients were included: 3919 and 175 469 cases comprised the SSI and control groups, respectively. The meta‐analysis results showed that malnutrition significantly increased the SSI incidence (odds ratio, 1.811; 95% confidence interval, 1.512–2.111; p < 0.001). These results suggest that patients with malnutrition are at higher risk for SSI after surgery. However, because of significant differences in sample sizes among studies, and because some studies had limitations to their methodological quality, further validation of these results by additional high‐quality studies with larger sample sizes is necessary. Aim: The study aimed to provide evidence of the relationship between probiotics consumption and periodontitis. Materials and Methods: A total of 4577 adults who participated in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) during 2009–2014 were included in the study. The weighted prevalence of periodontitis was compared among different groups, and a weighted binary logistic regression analysis was conducted to explore the relationship between probiotic consumption and periodontitis. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were used to assess the role of probiotic consumption in the periodontitis prediction model. Results: Participants who consumed probiotics had a significantly lower prevalence of periodontitis than those who did not (41.08% vs. 27.83%, p <.001). After fully adjusting for all factors, the odds ratio associated with periodontitis for consuming probiotics was 0.70 (95% confidence interval 0.54–0.92, p =.01) when compared with those who did not consume probiotics. A predictive model including age, sex, ethnicity, poverty income ratio, smoking status and probiotics had 77.0% sensitivity and 60.3% specificity in detecting periodontitis in US adults and achieved an area under the ROC curve of 0.749. Organophosphate insecticides have been widely used in agriculture to control insect pests and raised growing problems including insecticide resistance. According to recent studies, microbial symbionts play important roles in developing insecticide resistance. The bean bug Riptortus pedestris is a notorious pest of leguminous crops, harbouring diverse microorganisms in their insect midguts. However, the potential biological roles of many gut‐associated bacteria are largely unknown. In this study, we isolated a bacterial strain from the midgut of R. pedestris and identified it as Serratia marcescens based on its morphological characteristics and the phylogenetic analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequence. A halo of phosphorus‐solubilizing bacteria was observed on a medium containing lecithin and an organophosphorus insecticide dimethoate. Subsequently, the microbial degradation of dimethoate was determined using Gas Chromatography with Mass Spectroscopy (GC–MS). Further analysis indicated that the S. marcescens contained organophosphorus‐degrading MBL‐fold metallo‐hydrolase gene. Additionally, we discovered that the bacterium could colonize the insect midgut stably and enhance the host survivorship when exposed to dimethoate. Our results revealed that an insect gut‐associated bacterium could degrade organophosphorus compounds, thereby reducing related insecticide toxicity to the insect hosts. The treatment of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is one of the most difficult challenges in neurodevelopmental diseases, because of the unclear pathogenesis research and low brain-lesion targeting efficiency. Besides, maternal immune activation has been reported as the most mature and widely used model of ASD and aspirin-triggered lipoxin A4 is a potent anti-inflammatory mediator being involved in the resolution of neuroinflammation in ASD. Therefore, an aspirin encapsulated cascade drug delivery system (Asp@TMNPs) is established, which can successively target the blood-brain barrier (BBB) and microglial cells and response to the acid microenvironment in lysosome. As a result, the mitochondrial oxidative stress, DNA damage, and inflammation of microglial cells are prominently alleviated. After the treatment of Asp@TMNPs, the social interaction, stereotype behavior, and anxious condition of ASD mice are notably improved and the activation of microglial cells is inhibited. Overall, this system successively penetrates the BBB and targets microglial cells, therefore, it significantly enhances the intracephalic drug accumulation and improves anti-neuroinflammatory efficacy of aspirin, providing a promising strategy for ASD treatment. Objective: In this study we aimed to investigate the incidence and risk factors for delayed post‐polypectomy bleeding (DPPB) in Chinese patients taking antithrombotics including antiplatelet agents and anticoagulants. Methods: A retrospective study was conducted in patients who underwent colorectal polypectomy from January 2017 to May 2020. Their demographic characteristics, features of the polyps including number, size, morphology, and location, and use of antiplatelet agents and anticoagulants were collected. The incidence and risk factors for DPPB were compared between the patients with and without antithrombotic use. Results: A total of 5152 polyps from 2267 patients were resected under endoscopy. Of these patients, 35 (1.54%) experienced DPPB. Compared with the control group who did not take antithrombotics (1.18%), the incidence of DPPB was significantly higher in patients treated with heparin bridge (HB) therapy (17.39%; P < 0.001) and clopidogrel (4.88%; P = 0.022), but did not differ in patients taking aspirin (1.28%), dual antiplatelet therapy (3.70%), warfarin alone (0%), or direct oral anticoagulants (3.85%). Using the multivariate analysis, HB therapy (odds ratio [OR] 16.735, 95% confidence interval [CI] 4.320‐64.834, P < 0.001), male sex (OR 3.825, 95% CI 1.298‐11.265, P = 0.015), polyps >1 cm (OR 4.584, 95% CI 1.782‐11.794, P = 0.002) and rectal polyps (OR 8.820, 95% CI 3.968‐19.602, P < 0.001) were independently associated with a high risk of DPPB. Conclusions: HB and clopidogrel therapies significantly increase the incidence of DPPB. HB therapy, male sex, polyp size and polyps located in the rectum are significant risk factors for DPPB. HUWE1 is an E3 ubiquitin ligase that is involved in cancer cell proliferation by regulating MCL‐1 stability. The HECT domain has been shown to be required for the ubiquitin ligase activity of HUWE1. To identify efficient drugs that impair the activity of HUWE1, and thus decrease MCL‐1 accumulation, we screened 2000 candidate compounds that might suppress HUWE1 activity. To evaluate these 2000 candidates, the HECT domain of HUWE1, which is the catalytic domain responsible for MCL1 ubiquitination, was selected as a conjugation site, and putative binding candidates were filtrated. Tobramycin emerged as one of the compounds that show efficient binding ability with the HECT domain of HUWE1. The surface plasmon resonance (SPR) results validated the specific binding of Tobramycin with the HECT domain. Subsequent analyses demonstrated its potential to inhibit cancer cell proliferation by binding to the HECT domain of HUWE1 and impeding the HUWE1‐mediated ubiquitination of MCL‐1. Consequently, the accumulation of MCL‐1 inhibited the proliferation of tumour cells, while the apoptosis rates were not significantly altered after Tobramycin treatment. In vitro experiments showed that Tobramycin could inhibit cell proliferation by regulating the G2/M transition in cancer cell models, including A549 and HeLaCaco2 cell lines. Understanding genetic diversity patterns of endangered species is an important premise for biodiversity conservation. The critically endangered salamander Andrias davidianus, endemic to central and southern mainland in China, has suffered from sharp range and population size declines over the past three decades. However, the levels and patterns of genetic diversity of A. davidianus populations in wild remain poorly understood. Herein, we explore the levels and phylogeographic patterns of genetic diversity of wild‐caught A. davidianus using larvae and adult collection with the aid of sequence variation in (a) the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) fragments (n = 320 individuals; 33 localities), (b) 19 whole mtDNA genomes, and (c) nuclear recombinase activating gene 2 (RAG2; n = 88 individuals; 19 localities). Phylogenetic analyses based on mtDNA datasets uncovered seven divergent mitochondrial clades (A–G), which likely originated in association with the uplifting of mountains during the Late Miocene, specific habitat requirements, barriers including mountains and drainages and lower dispersal ability. The distributions of clades were geographic partitioned and confined in neighboring regions. Furthermore, we discovered some mountains, rivers, and provinces harbored more than one clades. RAG2 analyses revealed no obvious geographic patterns among the five alleles detected. Our study depicts a relatively intact distribution map of A. davidianus clades in natural species range and provides important knowledge that can be used to improve monitoring programs and develop a conservation strategy for this critically endangered organism. Network alignment is an important bridge to understanding human protein–protein interactions (PPIs) and functions through model organisms. However, the underlying subgraph isomorphism problem complicates and increases the time required to align protein interaction networks (PINs). Parallel computing technology is an effective solution to the challenge of aligning large‐scale networks via sequential computing. In this study, the typical Hungarian‐Greedy Algorithm (HGA) is used as an example for PIN alignment. The authors propose a HGA with 2‐nearest neighbours (HGA‐2N) and implement its graphics processing unit (GPU) acceleration. Numerical experiments demonstrate that HGA‐2N can find alignments that are close to those found by HGA while dramatically reducing computing time. The GPU implementation of HGA‐2N optimises the parallel pattern, computing mode and storage mode and it improves the computing time ratio between the CPU and GPU compared with HGA when large‐scale networks are considered. By using HGA‐2N in GPUs, conserved PPIs can be observed, and potential PPIs can be predicted. Among the predictions based on 25 common Gene Ontology terms, 42.8% can be found in the Human Protein Reference Database. Furthermore, a new method of reconstructing phylogenetic trees is introduced, which shows the same relationships among five herpes viruses that are obtained using other methods. Purpose: To investigate the feasibility of the dosimetric Pareto front (PF) prediction based on patient's anatomic and dosimetric parameters for esophageal cancer patients. Methods: Eighty esophagus patients in the authors' institution were enrolled in this study. A total of 2928 intensity-modulated radiotherapy plans were obtained and used to generate PF for each patient. On average, each patient had 36.6 plans. The anatomic and dosimetric features were extracted from these plans. The mean lung dose (MLD), mean heart dose (MHD), spinal cord max dose, and PTV homogeneity index were recorded for each plan. Principal component analysis was used to extract overlap volume histogram (OVH) features between PTV and other organs at risk. The full dataset was separated into two parts; a training dataset and a validation dataset. The prediction outcomes were the MHD and MLD. The spearman's rank correlation coefficient was used to evaluate the correlation between the anatomical features and dosimetric features. The stepwise multiple regression method was used to fit the PF. The cross validation method was used to evaluate the model. Results: With 1000 repetitions, the mean prediction error of the MHD was 469 cGy. The most correlated factor was the first principal components of the OVH between heart and PTV and the overlap between heart and PTV in Z-axis. The mean prediction error of the MLD was 284 cGy. The most correlated factors were the first principal components of the OVH between heart and PTV and the overlap between lung and PTV in Z-axis. Conclusions: It is feasible to use patients' anatomic and dosimetric features to generate a predicted Pareto front. Additional samples and further studies are required improve the prediction model. A novel biodegradable copolyester poly(ε-caprolactonε- co-D,L-lactide) with four pendent functional groups was designed and synthesized. The synthetic route includes the following three steps: (1) synthesis of OH-terminated PCLA (PCLA-OH) by the ringopening copolymerization of ε-caprolactone and D,Llactide; (2) end-group functionalization of PCLA-OH through the esterification with lysine; and (3) synthesis of tetra-amino-terminated PCLA (PCLA-NH2) by removing the protecting groups. The composition, structure, and thermal property of these copolyesters were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, and modulated differential scanning calorimetry. Results revealed that the molecular weight and glass transition temperature of PCLA-NH2 can be tailored by the careful selection of synthesis parameters. Moreover, polyester elastomers based on PCLA-NH2 were synthesized and characterized. These polyester elastomers are stabilized in their rubbery state in room temperature and exhibit tunable physiochemical and mechanical properties. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

ABSTRACT A series of random copolysiloxanes (PCDMS) containing various amount of γ-cyanopropyl groups are prepared by a new method under mild conditions. Structures of the synthesized polymers are fully characterized by FTIR, 1H NMR, 29Si NMR, and GPC. Rheological properties of PCDMS are tested by cone and plate rheometer, and thermal properties by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetry analysis (TGA). Damping properties as well as fuel resistance of the cured PCDMS elastomers are also tested. The correlation between chemical structure, content of cyanopropyl group and properties are discussed. With the increasing amount of polar cyanopropyl group introduced, glass transition temperatures ( Tg) of the synthesized PCDMS gradually increases from −121 to −65 °C, residual weight increases from 0 to 36% at 800°C, loss factor reaches as high as 1.74, mass increase under fuel immersion for 14 days can be as low as 3.6%. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Novel degradable biomedical materials are found to have huge potential applications in fields such as drug delivery and release, orthopedic fixation support and tissue engineering. Utilization of polymers as biomaterials has greatly impacted the advancement of modern medicine. In this review, some new degradable biomedical copolyesters reported in recent years are introduced and discussed in combination with some of our research results, including non-crosslinked copolyesters, crosslinked copolyesters and their corresponding derivatives. The molecular design, chemical structures and related properties of these biodegradable copolyesters are reported. The title centrosymmetric dinuclear Ni(II) complex, [Ni(C(14)H(8)O(4)S)(C(3)H(7)NO)](n), was prepared via reaction of Ni(NO(3))(2)·6H(2)O and thio-salicylic acid, with H(2)O and dimethyl-formamide (DMF) as the mixed solvent. The central Ni(II) ion is five-coordinated by five O atoms from DMF and from the carboxyl-ate groups of the organic ligand. The symmetry-related coordination polyhedra inter-link into centrosymmetric dimeric units and these, in turn, are linked into infinite chains propagating parallel to [100].
