Ongoing research is dedicated to tackling the trade‐off between out‐coupling efficiency, transparency, and conductivity for transparent conductive electrodes (TCEs), owing to their continuously increasing application in smartphones/watches, augmented/virtual reality, and naked eye 3D projection. Herein, an aluminum substrate‐mediated hybrid plasmon mode is deliberately embedded in solution‐processed organic light‐emitting diode (SOLED). The created TCE with a 6‐nm‐Al film‐mediated indium tin oxide (ITO) displays an average transmittance of 88.3%, an average ultra‐low haze of 0.2%, and a sheet resistance of 9.5 Ω  sq−1, surpassing commercial ITO substrates. By precisely controlling the geometry of this aluminium film/dielectric spacer/silver nanoparticle (Al film‐TAPC‐Ag NP) coupled system, a hybrid dipolar, and quadrupolar mode is required, providing further enhanced scattering strength and plasmon coupling effect in the resultant OLED. These Al film‐TAPC‐Ag NP system mediated SOLEDs display improved decay rate of triplet excitons, elevated electroluminescence out‐coupling efficiency, and suppressed waveguide confinement. Consequently, enhanced stability by 10% after 580 h storage without encapsulation, forward‐directed emission with a ± 70° light‐emitting angle, and a 22% current efficiency enhancement are simultaneously realized, compared with conventional SOLEDs. Atomically precise metal nanoclusters (NCs) emerge as fascinating synthons in self‐assembled materials. The self‐assembly of metal NCs are highly sensitive to the environment because they have an inorganic‐organic hybridized structure and a relatively complicated conformation. Here, it is shown that when confined in crowded colloids, a water‐soluble Ag9‐cored nanocluster (Ag9‐NC) can self‐ assemble into ultra‐long (up to millimeters) and photoluminescent ribbons with high flexibility. The ribbon contains rectangularly organized columns of Ag9‐NCs and can undergo secondary self‐assembly to form bundled and branched structures. Formation of ribbons is observed in all the tested colloids, including lyotropic liquid crystals and disordered, three‐dimensional network. The high viscosity/elasticity of the crowded colloids weakens gravity‐induced sedimentation of the ribbons, leading to the formation of an interesting class of inorganic‐organic composite materials where the hard Ag‐containing skeleton strengthens the soft matter. The simultaneously occurring symmetry breaking during the self‐assembly of Ag9‐NCs gives uncontrolled supramolecular chirality, which can be tuned through the majority rule and soldier‐and‐sergeant rule by the introduction of chiral seeds. The regulated chirality and the intrinsic photoluminescence of the Ag9‐NCs ribbons impart the composite material circularly polarized luminescence, opening the door for a variety of potential applications. Recently, advanced optical materials with circularly polarized phosphorescence (CPP) have attracted much attention. However, such materials are limited due to the difficulty of preparation and the scarcity of precursors. Herein, CPP materials are constructed for the first time using water‐soluble, pseudo‐chiral silver nanoclusters with atomic precision ((NH4)9 [Ag9 (mba)9], H2mba = 2‐mercaptobenzoic acid, abbreviated to Ag9‐NCs hereafter). Induced by the complexation of l‐ or d‐tartaric acid (TrA) through hydrogen bonding, Ag9‐NCs crystallize from aqueous solutions, during which the chirality of the hybrid is amplified and the phosphorescence of Ag9‐NCs is enhanced. It is speculated that the chiral transfer from TrA to Ag9‐NCs is the main source of the well‐defined circular dichroism signals with good repeatability. The Ag9‐NCs/TrA cocrystals exhibit good CPP performance with dissymmetric factors up to 1.05 × 10−2, which is the highest value for metal NCs‐based CPP materials. This work is expected to be an inspiration for preparing metal NCs‐based CPP materials by supramolecular strategy. Our previous works have indicated that extracellular ATP is an important prometastasis factor. However, the molecular mechanism involved needs to be further studied. We demonstrated that extracellular ATP treatment could upregulate the expression of connective tissue growth factor (CTGF) in both triple‐negative breast cancer (TNBC) cells and endothelial cells (ECs). Extracellular ATP stimulated the migration of TNBC cells and ECs, and angiogenesis of ECs via the P2Y2––YAP‐CTGF axis. Furthermore, we demonstrated that adenosine triphosphate (ATP) stimulated TNBC cell adhesion to ECs and transmigration through the EC layer via CTGF by upregulation of integrin β1 on TNBC cells and VCAM‐1 on ECs. Both apyrase (ATP‐diphosphohydrolase) and CTGF shRNA treatments could inhibit the metastasis of inoculated tumors to lung and liver in a mouse model, and these treated tumors had fewer blood vessels. Collectively, our data indicated that extracellular ATP promotes tumor angiogenesis and the interactions between TNBC cells and ECs through upregulation of CTGF, thereby stimulating TNBC metastasis. Kinetically stable and long‐lived intermediates are crucial in monitoring the progress and understanding of supramolecular self‐assembly of diverse aggregated structures with collective functions. Herein, the complex dynamics of an atomically precise CuI nanocluster [Cu8(tBuC6H4S)8(PPh3)4] (Cu8a) is systematically investigated. Remarkably, by monitoring the aggregation‐induced emission (AIE) and electron microscopy of the kinetically stable intermediates in real time, the directed self‐assembly (DSA) process of Cu8a is deduced. The polymorphism and different emission properties of Cu NCs aggregates were successfully captured, allowing the structure–optical property relationship to be established. More importantly, the utilization of a mathematical "permutation and combination" ideology by introducing a heterogeneous luminescent agent of a carbon dot (CD) to Cu8a aggregates enriches the "visualization" fluorescence window, which offers great potential in real time application for optical sensing of materials. Background: Both midline catheters (MCs) and peripherally inserted central catheters (PICCs) can cause venous thromboembolism (VTE), but the prevalence associated with each is controversial. Objective: To compare the risk of VTE between MCs and PICCs with a systematic review and meta‐analysis. Methods: The Web of Science Core Collection, PubMed, Scopus, Embase, the Cochrane Library and ProQuest were searched from inception to January 2020. All studies comparing the risk of VTE between MCs and PICCs were included. Selected studies were assessed for methodological quality using the Downs and Black checklist. Two authors independently assessed the literature and extracted the data. Any different opinion was resolved through third‐party consensus. Meta‐analyses were conducted to generate estimates of VTE risk in patients with MCs versus PICCs, and publication bias was evaluated with RevMan 5.3. Results: A total of 86 studies were identified. Twelve studies were recruited, involving 40,871 patients. The prevalence of VTE with MCs and PICCs was 3.97% (310/7806) and 2.29% (758/33065), respectively. Meta‐analysis showed that the prevalence of VTE with MCs was higher than that with PICCs (RR=1.53, 95% CI: 1.33–1.76, p <.00001). Subgroup analyses by age showed that the prevalence of VTE with MCs was higher than that with PICCs in the adult group (RR=1.75, 95% CI: 1.38–2.22, p <.00001), and higher than that with PICCs in the other subgroups (RR=1.42, 95% CI: 1.19–1.69, p =.0001). Subgroup analyses by nation showed that the prevalence of VTE with MCs was higher than that with PICCs (RR=1.50, 95% CI: 1.30–1.73, p <.00001) in US subgroup and higher than that with PICCs (RR=2.87, 95% CI: 1.24–6.65, p =.01) in the other nations. The sensitivity analysis shows that the results from this meta‐analysis are robust and all studies have no significant publication bias. Conclusions: This study provides the first systematic assessment of the risk of VTE between MCs and PICCs. MCs are associated with a higher risk of VTE than PICCs in all patients and adults. Selected studies were assessed for methodological quality using the Downs and Black checklist. Two authors independently assessed the literature and extracted the data. A fixed effects model was used to generate estimates of CRBSI risk in patients with MCs versus PICCs. Publication bias was evaluated, and meta‐analyses were conducted with RevMan 5.3. Results: A total of 167 studies were identified. Ten studies were collected, involving 33,322 patients. The prevalence of CRBSI with MCs and PICCs was 0.58% (40/6,900) and 0.48% (127/26,422), respectively. Meta‐analysis showed that the prevalence of CRBSI was not significantly different between MCs and PICCs (RR = 0.77, 95% CI: 0.50–1.17, p =.22). While the result showed that the prevalence of CRBSI with MCs was lower than that with PICCs (RR = 0.55, 95% CI: 0.33–0.92, p =.02) after poor‐quality studies were removed. The sensitivity analysis shows that the results from this meta‐analysis are fair in overall studies and non‐poor‐quality studies. All studies have no significant publication bias. Conclusions: This study provides the first systematic assessment of the risk of CRBSI between MCs and PICCs and provides evidence for the selection of appropriate vascular access devices for intravenous infusion therapy in nursing. This study aims to investigate the morphology and distribution of mitochondria, spindles, and chromosomes in oocytes of aged mice and examine the effects of SRT1720 on oocyte maturation. C57BL/6J mice were divided into young (4-8 weeks) and aged groups (48-52 weeks). In vitro maturation media contained (0.05, 0.1, and 1.0 µM) SRT1720 and 0.1-µM dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO control). The rate of chromosome misalignment and spindle misorientation in oocytes of aged mice were significantly higher than that of young mice (P < 0.01). Fluorescence intensity of mitochondria from oocytes of aged mice was significantly lower than that of young mice (P < 0.01). SRT1720 at 0.1 µM significantly improved oocyte maturation, fertilization, and blastocyst formation in aged mice compared with young mice (P < 0.01). Additionally, immunofluorescence intensity of mitochondria, normal spindle morphology, and chromosome alignment were notably enhanced with SRT1720 when compared with the DSMO control group for metaphase II (MII)-stage oocytes matured in vitro (P < 0.01); 0.1-µM SRT1720 enhanced the expression level of SRIT1 in oocytes from aged mice. In summary, the aged mice oocytes showed increased nuclear and cytoplasmic defects, whereas SRT1720 enhanced oocyte maturation and quality. The innate immune system, the first line of defense against pathogens, is activated by nucleic acids from microbial invaders that are recognized by nucleic acid‐sensing receptors. Recent evidence affirms the ability of these receptors to respond to nucleic acids released by damaged cancer cells. The innate immune system is also involved in cancer immunosurveillance, and could be modulated for devising effective antitumor therapies by targeting nucleic acid‐sensing pathways. A systematic, comprehensive analysis of dysregulation in nucleic acid‐sensing pathways in cancer is required to fully understand its role. Based on multidimensional data of The Cancer Genome Atlas pan‐cancer cohort, we revealed that upregulation of cytosolic DNA‐sensing genes like AIM2 and CGAS was common in tumor tissues. We used 15 genes in the nucleic acid‐sensing pathway to cluster all tumor patients into 2 subgroups and found that the subgroup with higher expression of nucleic acid‐sensing pathway genes was associated with poorer prognosis across cancer types. However, in homologous recombination deficient patients, the nucleic acid recognition activated subgroup was associated with better prognosis, which confirms the therapeutic effect of nucleic acid recognition. This study contributes to a better understanding of the functions and mechanisms of nucleic acid recognition in cancer, lays the foundation for new therapeutic strategies, and enlarges the scope of development of new drugs. Luminescent metal nanoclusters (NCs) are emerging as a new class of functional materials that have rich physicochemical properties and wide potential applications. In recent years, it has been found that some metal NCs undergo aggregation‐induced emission (AIE) and an interesting fluorescence‐to‐phosphorescence (F‐P) switching in solutions. However, insights of both the AIE and the F‐P switching remain largely unknown. Now, gelation of water soluble, atomically precise Ag9 NCs is achieved by the addition of antisolvent. Self‐assembly of Ag9 NCs into entangled fibers was confirmed, during which AIE was observed together with an F‐P switching occurring within a narrow time scale. Structural evaluation indicates the fibers are highly ordered. The self‐assembly of Ag9 NCs and their photoluminescent property are thermally reversible, making the metal–organic gels good candidates for luminescent ratiometric thermometers. Extracellular ATP has been shown to play an important role in invasion and the epithelial‐mesenchymal transition (EMT) process in breast cancer; however, the mechanism is unclear. Here, by using a cDNA microarray, we demonstrated that extracellular ATP could stimulate hypoxia‐inducible factor (HIF) signaling and upregulate hypoxia‐inducible factor 1/2α (HIF‐1/2α) expression. After knocking down HIF‐1/2α using siRNA, we found that ATP‐driven invasion and EMT were significantly attenuated via HIF2A‐siRNA in breast cancer cells. By using ChIP assays, we revealed that the biological function of extracellular ATP in invasion and EMT process depended on HIF‐2α direct targets, among which lysyl oxidase‐like 2 (LOXL2) and matrix metalloproteinase‐9 (MMP‐9) mediated ATP‐driven invasion, and E‐cadherin and Snail mediated ATP‐driven EMT, respectively. In addition, using silver staining and mass spectrometry, we found that phosphoglycerate kinase 1 (PGK1) could interact with HIF‐2α and mediate ATP‐driven HIF‐2α upregulation. Furthermore, we demonstrated that expressions of HIF‐2α and its target proteins could be regulated via ATP by AKT‐PGK1 pathway. Using a Balb/c mice model, we illustrated the function of HIF‐2α in promoting tumor growth and metastasis in vivo. Moreover, by exploring online databases, we found that molecules involved in ATP‐HIF‐2α signaling were highly expressed in human breast carcinoma tissues and were associated with poor prognosis. Altogether, these findings suggest that extracellular ATP could promote breast carcinoma invasion and EMT via HIF‐2α signaling, which may be a potential target for future anti–metastasis therapy. Research on the self‐assembly of various amphiphilic molecules is a relatively new research area and of great significance. However, new kinds of metal‐nanocluster (NC)‐based amphiphilic molecule have rarely been explored. Herein, hydrophobic cation 1‐hexadecyl‐3‐methylimidazolium (C16mim+) was chosen to modify hydrophilic (NH4)6[Ag6(mna)6] (Ag6‐NCs, H2mna=2‐mercaptonicotinic acid) and Ag6@C16mim‐NCs were obtained. Ag6@C16mim‐NCs displayed thermotropic liquid crystal and thermofluorescent properties. Moreover, the Ag6@C16mim‐NCs exhibits benign amphiphilicity, and it can self‐assemble into ordered nanosheets and nanorods through aggregation in water/dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) binary solvent mixtures, whereas single Ag6‐NCs do not. Meanwhile, the Ag6@C16mim‐NCs also displays aggregation‐induced emission properties owing to the restriction of intramolecular vibrations of the capping ligands. Furthermore, the luminescent aggregates could detect arginine selectively with the detection limit at 28 μm. This study introduces a new kind of metal‐NC‐based amphiphilic molecule in a supramolecular self‐assembly field, and they have potential to be used as optical materials in applied research. The low-frequency oscillation has become one of the most threatening problems of the electrical power system in the past few decades. The traditional Prony analysis method is seriously affected by noise and order estimation which cannot get the dominant oscillation sometime. A singular value decomposition-difference differential method is proposed for order estimation of Prony mode. A parameter optimisation method based on interior point method is also proposed eliminating the noise effects on dominant model parameters. The proposed method has a fairly good property in noise suppression and dominant oscillation mode tracking. Extracellular adenosine 5′-triphosphate (ATP), secreted by living cancer cells or released by necrotic tumor cells, plays an important role in tumor invasion and metastasis. Our previous study demonstrated that ATP treatment in vitro could promote invasion in human prostate cancer cells via P2Y2, a preferred receptor for ATP, by enhancing EMT process. However, the pro-invasion mechanisms of ATP and P2Y2 are still poorly studied in breast cancer. In this study, we found that P2Y2 was highly expressed in breast cancer cells and associated with human breast cancer metastasis. ATP could promote the in vitro invasion of breast cancer cells and enhance the expression of β-catenin as well as its downstream target genes CD44, c-Myc and cyclin D1, while P2Y2 knockdown attenuated above ATP-driven events in vitro and in vivo. Furthermore, iCRT14, a β-catenin/TCF complex inhibitor, could also suppress ATP-driven migration and invasion in vitro. These results suggest that ATP promoted breast cancer cell invasion via P2Y2-β-catenin axis. Thus blockade of the ATP-P2Y2-β-catenin axis could suppress the invasive and metastatic potential of breast cancer cells and may serve as potential targets for therapeutic interventions of breast cancer. The dilational rheological properties of hydrophobically modified polyacrylamide (HMPAM) or hydrolyzed polyacrylamide (HPAM) solutions without and with imidazolium surfactants ([C-4-Cim]Br and [Cmim]Br) at the air/water surface were investigated using oscillating bubble measurements. The results obtained suggest that imidazolium surfactants interact with the polymer on the surface, enhancing the dilational viscoelasticity of surface film. The dilational modulus value of [C-4-Cim]Br/HMPAM is higher than that of the [Cmim]Br/HMPAM system at low polymer concentration, confirming that [C-4-Cim]Br with two head groups and two hydrophobic chains can combine with a polymer to form a strong film on the surface. Moreover, imidazolium surfactants have stronger hydrophobic interaction with HMPAM chains than those of HPAM, thus enhancing the surface film strength for a surfactant/HMPAM system. Background Acute occupational hand injuries are a common occurrence in China's metal manufacturing industries. This study aimed to explore the transient risk factors for acute occupational hand injuries among metal manufacturing workers. Methods A case-crossover study was conducted from October 2013 through December 2013 in Zhongshan city, southern China. Face-to-face interviews were used to collect information on the occurrence of 12 transient risk factors during the 'hazard' period (a 60-min period prior to occupational hand injury) and a 'control' period (the week before the injury). Results One hundred ninety-four qualified acute occupational hand injury cases (139 male, 55 female) were enrolled in this study, with a mean age of 35.5 (standard deviation [SD] 10.4) years. The most common (64.9%) type of work was punching, and the most common injures were crushes and fractures (28.8 and 23.7%, respectively). Of these cases, 62.9% were regarded as severe or major. Among the 12 transient risk factors, 11 ones were significantly associated with acute occupational hand injuries occurring during the hazard period: 'replacing sharp knives' ( IRR = 14.38, 95%CI 11.43-18.08), 'using malfunctioning machinery' ( IRR = 30.59, 95%CI 17.84-52.48), 'using different tools' ( IRR = 10.96, 95%CI 4.77-25.17), 'using different machines' ( IRR = 5.20, 95%CI 2.25-12.00), 'performing unusual work tasks' ( IRR = 24.38, 95%CI 14.11-42.15), 'working overtime' ( IRR = 13.40, 95%CI 7.70-23.29), 'performing a task with a different method' ( IRR = 56.41, 95%CI 23.61-134.81), 'being in a bad mood' ( IRR = 108.11, 95%CI 55.10-211.11), 'feeling ill' ( RR = 12.27, 95%CI 4.95-30.43), 'rushing' ( IRR = 5.16, 95%CI 2.49-10.70), and 'not wearing gloves' ( IRR = 1.63, 95%CI 1.23-2.15). The aggregation behavior of sodium bis-(2-ethylhexyl)-sulfosuccinate (AOT) at the air/water interface in the absence and presence of inorganic salts was investigated by molecular dynamics simulation. Both monovalent and divalent ions were studied, such as LiCl, NaCl, KCl, MgCl and CaCl. It has been proved that these inorganic ions have great influence on the structure of the AOT monolayer and water molecules around its headgroup. In the presence of inorganic salts, AOT molecules are relatively ordered at the interface and water around the headgroups of AOT shows a lower diffusion coefficient compared with the situation without inorganic salts. All the counterions are prone to move toward the headgroups and locate at the interface. Divalent ions have a strong interaction with AOT, thus they affect the aggregation behavior of AOT remarkably. Objective The ultrasound quantitative method for liver fat content (LFC) is a recent established method for non-invasive assessment of liver steatosis. Its use in clinical practice is further explored by investigating the quantitative relationships between LFC measured by quantitative ultrasonography and metabolic diseases in a middle-aged and elderly Chinese population. Methods Liver fat content was measured by the quantitative ultrasound method in 4,916 participants from the Shanghai Changfeng Community Study. The anthropometric and serum biochemical parameters related to glucose and lipid metabolism were detected for each participant. The carotid artery intima-media thickness (CIMT) was measured by ultrasonography. Results The LFC displayed a non-Gaussian and positively skewed distribution in the community population and was significantly correlated with body weight, serum glucose, lipid profile, and CIMT. The 95th percentile of LFC in the subgroup of participants without any metabolic disease was 10.8%, and a LFC ≥ 10% was correlated with remarkable increases in the risks for glucose and lipid metabolic diseases. Conclusions The quantitative ultrasound method that was developed for measuring LFC was useful in a population study. Sirtuin 6 ( SIRT6) can function as a tumor suppressor by suppressing aerobic glycolysis and apoptosis resistance. However, the negative effect of SIRT6 on cellular senescence implies that it may also have the potential to promote tumor development. Here we report that the upregulation of SIRT6 expression was required for transforming growth factor ( TGF)-β1 and H2O2/ HOCl reactive oxygen species (ROS) to promote the tumorigenicity of hepatocellular carcinoma ( HCC) cells. Transforming growth factor-β1/H2O2/ HOCl could upregulate SIRT6 expression in HCC cells by inducing the sustained activation of ERK and Smad pathways. Sirtuin 6 in turn abrogated the inducing effect of TGF-β1/H2O2/ HOCl on cellular senescence of HCC cells, and was required for the ERK pathway to efficiently suppress the expression of p16 and p21. Sirtuin 6 altered the effect of Smad and p38 MAPK pathways on cellular senescence, and contributed to the inhibitory effect of the ERK pathway on cellular senescence. However, SIRT6 was inefficient in antagonizing the promoting effect of TGF-β1/H2O2/ HOCl on aerobic glycolysis and anoikis resistance. Intriguingly, if SIRT6 expression was inhibited, the promoting effect of TGF-β1/H2O2/ HOCl on aerobic glycolysis and anoikis resistance was not sufficient to enhance the tumorigenicity of HCC cells. Suppressing the upregulation of SIRT6 enabled TGF-β1/H2O2/ HOCl to induce cellular senescence, thereby abrogating the enhancement of HCC cell tumorigenicity by TGF-β1/H2O2/ HOCl. These results suggest that SIRT6 is required for TGF-β1/H2O2/ HOCl to enhance the tumorigenicity of HCC cells, and that targeting the ERK pathway to suppress the upregulation of SIRT6 might be a potential approach in comprehensive strategies for the therapy of HCC. Silicone surfactants favor spreading at interfaces and siloxane has strong interaction with carbon nanotubes (CNT), thus silicone surfactant may be a good dispersant of CNT. Here, four silicone surfactants (named S1E19, S2E38, S2E16 and S1E16P8) were used to disperse CNT in aqueous solutions. The effects of surfactant structure and concentration on the ability at dispersing CNT were considered. All of the four silicone surfactants can disperse CNT in aqueous solution and the sample with 1,000 mg L S1E16P8 was the best one. The hydrophilic group polyoxyethylene (PEO) and the hydrophobic groups siloxane and polypropylene (PPO) are crucial factors in the ability of dispersing CNT. S2E38 with more ethylene oxide (EO) groups has a stronger ability to disperse CNT than S2E16. The dispersion system provided by S1E19 which contains fewer siloxane and EO groups is relatively unstable and disperses less CNT. These experimental results are explained by molecular dynamics simulation. S2E38 compared with S1E19 and S2E16 has stronger interactions with CNT. The interaction energy of CNT with S1E16P8 which has a PPO moiety but fewer siloxane groups is close to that of S2E16. Furthermore, it can be concluded that these four surfactants are adsorbed on CNT mainly by van der Waals forces and the Si-O-Si chain of silicon surfactant was flexible due to the long Si-C bond and it could easily wrap onto the surface of CNT through hydrophobic and other intermolecular interactions. The interaction between an ethoxylated alkylphenol polymer with formaldehyde (EAPPF) and a triblock polyEO-polyPO-polyEO copolymer (TBCP) in aqueous solutions has been investigated in detail by means of surface tension, steady-state fluorescence, dynamic light scattering (DLS) measurements and computer simulations. For comparison, the ethoxylated alkylphenol oligomer (EAPO), which is the monomer unit of EAPPF, and another nonionic water-soluble polymer PEG were also selected to get more information about the interaction between different types of surfactants and polymers. The surface properties of mixed systems at the air/water surface were evaluated from surface tension measurements. Information about the hydrophobic microenvironment and size of the aggregates was obtained from steady-state fluorescence using pyrene as a hydrophobic probe and DLS measurements, respectively. The dissipative particle dynamics simulation method was applied to simulate the interaction between EAPPF (or EAPO) and TBCP (or PEG) in aqueous solutions. The synergetic interaction between EAPPF (or EAPO) and TBCP in binary mixed solution enhanced the adsorption of surfactant molecules (EAPPF or EAPO) at the interface, while no obvious interaction between EAPPF (or EAPO) and PEG was observed. Cachexia is a wasting condition defined by skeletal muscle atrophy in the setting of systemic inflammation. To explore the site at which inflammatory mediators act to produce atrophy in vivo, we utilized mice with a conditional deletion of the inflammatory adaptor protein myeloid differentiation factor 88 (MyD88). Mthough whole-body MyD88-knockout (wbMyD88KO) mice resist skeletal muscle atrophy in response to LPS, muscle-specific deletion of MyD88 is not protective. Furthermore, selective reexpression of MyD88 in the muscle of wbMyD88KO mice via electroporation fails to restore atrophy gene induction by LPS. To evaluate the role of glucocorticoids as the inflammation- induced mediator of atrophy in vivo, we generated mice with targeted deletion of the glucocorticoid receptor in muscle (mGRKO mice). Muscle-specific deletion of the glucocorticoid receptor affords a 71% protection against LPS-induced atrophy compared to control animals. Furthermore, mGRKO mice exhibit 77% less skeletal muscle atrophy than control animals in response to tumor growth. These data demonstrate that glucocorticoids are a major determinant of inflammation-induced atrophy in vivo and play a critical role in the pathogenesis of endotoxemic and cancer cachexia. The effect of uric acid ( UA) on the pathogenesis of metabolic disorders is highly dependent on its physicochemical properties, and hyperuricaemia associated with different conditions may have different clinical meanings. The aim of the present study was to investigate the association of serum UA levels with metabolic syndrome and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease ( NAFLD) in a middle-aged and elderly population with normal and impaired renal function., The cross-sectional study was performed on 1141 participants (426 men, 715 women; mean age 62 years) enrolled from the Shanghai Changfeng community. Each participant underwent a standard interview, with anthropometric and laboratory measurements. Hepatic fat content ( HFC) was determined by a newly established quantitative ultrasound method., Univariate correlation analysis showed that serum UA was associated with all components of metabolic syndrome and HFC ( r = 0.193, P < 0.001), especially in participants with a normal estimated glomerular filtration rate (e GFR; r = 0.255, P < 0.001). Logistic regression analysis demonstrated an independent association of serum UA with metabolic syndrome and NAFLD in participants with normal renal function, but not in those with e GFR < 90 m L/min per 1.73 m2. Furthermore, multivariate linear analysis showed that UA levels were independently associated with HFC ( P = 0.003), but only in participants with normal e GFR., Elevated serum UA is independently associated with metabolic syndrome and NAFLD in patients with normal renal excretory function. Centrosome defects can result in aneuploidy and genomic instability, and have important implications for breast cancer development. The Aurora-A and BRCA1 proteins interact and both are strongly involved in centrosome regulation. Genetic variants in these two genes may have an effect on breast cancer development. Here, we report a comprehensive single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) and haplotype-tagging association study on these two genes in 1334 breast cancer cases and 1568 unaffected controls among the Chinese Han population. Apart from a missense SNP, rs2273535 (Phe31Ile), and a probable risk SNP, rs2064863, six htSNPs were analysed in three high-LD blocks of AURKA spanning from 10 kb upstream to 2 kb downstream of AURKA. For BRCA1, six htSNPs were analysed in a large high-LD region covering 98 kb (10 kb was extended to each end of BRCA1). The results showed that four SNPs in AURKA (data in recessive model, rs2273535: OR = 2.19, 95% CI = 1.03-4.66, p = 0.0422; rs2298016: OR = 0.38, 95% CI = 0.18-0.82, p = 0.0141; rs6024836: OR = 1.54, 95% CI = 1.18-2.00, p = 0.0014; rs10485805: OR = 0.68, 95% CI = 0.47-0.98, p = 0.0380) and one SNP in BRCA1 (rs3737559, dominant model OR = 1.35, 95% CI = 1.11-1.64, p = 0.0030) were associated with breast cancer susceptibility. After correction for multiple comparisons (FDR = 0.05), only rs6024836 and rs3737559 remained significant. Two haplotypes (CC of block 2, OR = 20.74, 95% CI = 4.35-98.88, p = 0.0001; GG of block 3, OR = 1.32, 95% CI = 1.12-1.56, p = 0.0010) and one diplotype (AG-GG of block 3, OR = 1.63, 95% CI = 1.18-2.26, p = 0.0031) within AURKA showed strong associations with breast cancer risk. One haplotype of BRCA1 (CTGTTG, OR = 1.30, 95% CI = 1.06-1.59, p = 0.0118) was also associated with breast cancer risk. However, women harbouring both at-risk genotypes of Aurora-A and BRCA1 were at a slightly increased risk compared with those harbouring either at-risk variant alone. Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) nanofibers were formed by electrospinning. Metal chelated nanofibrous membranes were prepared by reaction between Cu(II) solution and nanofibers, and which were used as the matrix for catalases immobilization. The constants of Cu(II) adsorption and properties of immobilized catalases were studied in this work. The Cu(II) concentration was determined by atomic absorption spectrophotometer (AAS), the immobilized enzymes were confirmed by the Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and the amounts of immobilized enzymes were determined by the method of Bradford on an ultraviolet spectrophotometer (UV). Adsorption of Cu(II) onto PVA nanofibers was studied by the Langmuir isothermal adsorption model. The maximum amount of coordinated Cu(II) ( q) was 2.1 mmol g (dry fiber), and the binding constant ( K) was 0.1166 L mmol. The immobilized catalases showed better resistance to pH and temperature inactivation than that of free form, and the thermal and storage stabilities of immobilized catalases were higher than that of free catalases. Kinetic parameters were analyzed for both immobilized and free catalases. The value of V (8425.8 μmol mg) for the immobilized catalases was smaller than that of the free catalases (10153.6 μmol mg), while the K for the immobilized catalases were larger. It was also found that the immobilized catalases had a high affinity with substrate, which demonstrated that the potential of PVA-Cu(II) chelated nanofibrous membranes applied to enzyme immobilization and biosensors. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The relation between oxidative damage and viability loss of excised embryonic axes of Antiaris toxicaria subjected to rapid drying with silica gel at 15 °C was studied. Changes of survival rate, accumulation of thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances (TBARs), activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), ascorbate peroxidase (APX), glutathione reductase (GR) and the permeability of cell membrane that was determined as relative electrolyte leakage (REL) were measured. The half-life moisture content (MCL50) was 0.41 g H2O/g DW (dry weight basis). During drying, the activities of SOD, CAT and APX increased until MCL50, and declined thereafter. The generation speed of ·O2−, and content of H2O2 and TBARs remained steadily or even decreased at MC levels higher than MCL50, demonstrating a low oxidative level in these axes. There was no significant correlation between viability loss and accumulation of reactive oxygen species or lipid peroxidation within the dehydration process until MCL50. Whereas the increase in REL from the beginning of the drying process indicated that the cell membrane was damaged. In conclusion, under rapid drying with silica gel the viability loss of excised recalcitrant A. toxicaria axes seemed to be triggered by mechanical or physical damage, rather than metabolic damage. The main molecular genetic changes identified in glioblastomas are overexpression/amplification of the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) gene and mutation/deletion of the tumor suppressor PTEN gene. These two genetic changes both play important roles in glial tumorigenesis and progression. In this study, we demonstrated that wild-type PTEN transfection inhibited the growth and transforming ability of U87MG cells by 69.3% and 73.5%, respectively. On the other hand, antisense-EGFR transfection inhibited the growth and transforming phenotype of these cells by 50.3% and 46.8%, respectively. However, cotransfection of U87MG cells with wild-type PTEN and antisense EGFR constructs could inhibit the cellular growth by 91.7%. The transforming phenotype of these cells was completely inhibited. In addition, these cotransfected cells showed a differentiated form and expressed much lower telomerase activity than cells transfected with wild-type PTEN or antisense-EGFR alone. In summary, these results suggest that cotransfection is a better approach to suppress glioma cell growth than wild-type PTEN transfer or antisense-EGFR transfection alone. In the title complex, [Mn(C(4)N(3))(2)(C(10)H(8)N(2)O(2))(2)], the Mn(II) atom lies on an inversion center and is coordinated by two 2,2'-bipyridine N,N'-dioxide (dpdo) mol-ecules and two tricyano-methanide (tcm) ligands to form a distorted octa-hedral geometry. Weak inter-molecular C-H⋯O or C-H⋯N hydrogen bonds, involving either the O atom of the dpdo mol-ecule and the pyridyl H atom, or the N atom of the tcm anion and the pyridyl H atom, result in the formation of a three-dimensional network structure.
