Melatonin is predominantly involved in signaling circadian and seasonal rhythms, and its synthesis is regulated by the environmental light/dark cycle. The selection pressure by geographically different environmental light/dark cycles, which is predominantly determined by sunshine duration, on the global distribution of genetic polymorphisms in the melatonin pathway is not well understood. Recent genetic association studies identified various disease-predisposition polymorphisms in this pathway. We investigated the correlations between the prevalence of these clinically important single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and sunshine duration among worldwide human populations from twelve regions in the CEPH-HGDP database rs4753426, a recently reported predisposition SNP for type 2 diabetes in the promoter of the MT2 melatonin receptor gene ( MTNR1B), which was not included in the CEPH-HGDP genotyping array, was additionally genotyped. This SNP showed a marginally significant correlation in 760 CEPH-HGDP DNA samples ( r = −0.5346, P = 0.0733), and it showed the most prominent association among the candidate melatonin pathway SNPs examined. To control for population structure, which may lead to a false positive correlation, we genotyped this SNP in a replication set of 1792 subjects from China. The correlation was confirmed among Chinese populations ( r = −0.8694, P = 0.0002), and was also statistically significant after correction of other climatic and geographical covariants in multiple regression analysis (β = −0.907, P = 1.94 × 10−5). Taken together, it suggests that the human melatonin signaling pathway, particularly MT2 melatonin receptor may have undergone a selective pressure in response to global variation in sunshine duration. Hakka and Chaoshanese are two unique Han populations residing in southern China but with northern Han (NH) cultural traditions and linguistic influences. Although most of historical records indicate that both populations migrated from northern China in the last two thousand years, no consensus on their origins has been reached so far. To shed more light on the origins of Hakka and Chaoshanese, mitochondrial DNAs (mtDNAs) of 170 Hakka from Meizhou and 102 Chaoshanese from Chaoshan area, Guangdong Province, were analyzed. Our results show that some southern Chinese predominant haplogroups, e.g. B, F, and M7, have relatively high frequencies in both populations. Although median network analyses show that Hakka/Chaoshanese share some haplotypes with NH, interpopulation comparison reveals that both populations show closer affinity with southern Han (SH) populations than with NH. In consideration of previous results from nuclear gene (including Y chromosome) research, it is likely that matrilineal landscapes of both Hakka and Chaoshanese have largely been shaped by the local people during their migration southward and/or later colonization in southern China, and factors such as cultural assimilation, patrilocality, and even sex-bias in the immigrants might have played important roles during the process. The Northwestern Pacific has a unique tectonic and geographical history with several marginal seas separating Asia from the Pacific Ocean. During low sea level periods of Pleistocene glaciations, populations might have been isolated in three marginal seas: the Sea of Japan, East China Sea and South China Sea. Following postglacial sea level rise, we would expect the populations isolated in the three regions to have been homogenized by high dispersal potential. To assess these hypotheses, we explore the intraspecific phylogeographical patterns in redlip mullet, Chelon haematocheilus. Fragments of 435 bp at the 5′ end of mitochondrial DNA control region were sequenced for 272 individuals from nine localities over most of the species’ range. Three distinct lineages were detected, which might have diverged in the three marginal seas during Pleistocene low sea levels. Contrary to homogenization expectation, there were strong differences in the geographical distribution of the three lineages. Analyses of molecular variance and the population statistic ΦST also revealed significant genetic structure among populations of the three marginal seas. These results indicate that gene flow in Chelon haematocheilus is far more restricted spatially than predicted by the potential dispersal capabilities of this species. The lack of phylogeographical structure in East China Sea may reflect a recent range expansion after the last glacial maximum and insufficient time to attain migration-drift equilibrium. Drosophila ( Sophophora) subpulchrella Takamori and Watabe, sp. nov., of the D. suzukii subgroup in the D. melanogaster species group, is described from Japan and southern China, and compared with its sibling species, D. pulchrella Tan et al. distributed in the Yun-Gui Highland, south-western China.
