The article examines the association of interleukin-8 (IL-8) with proliferation, migration, angiogenesis and chemosensitivity in colon cancer cell line models. IL-8, which is known to possess tumorigenic and proangiogenic properties, has been detected in many human tumors, including colorectal cancer (CRC). According to findings, overexpression of IL-8 promotes growth of tumor, metastasis, chemoresistance and angiogenesis. The association of IL-8 expression with the development of distant metastases is established.

Study Type – Diagnosis (case series) Level of Evidence 4 OBJECTIVE To analyse potential association of various clinical characteristics of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) with chronic kidney disease (CKD) among men presenting with lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) secondary to BPH of varying severity. PATIENTS AND METHODS We reviewed the data of 2741 consecutive patients who presented to our clinic with LUTS secondary to BPH. For our analysis, CKD was defined by an elevated serum creatinine level or decreased estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR). Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were used to address associations of CKD with various clinical characteristics. RESULTS Of the 2741 patients, 161 (5.9%) were initially classified as having CKD (serum creatinine ≥133 µmol/L). In multivariate analysis, peak flow rate ( P = 0.001) and a history of hypertension and/or diabetes (both P < 0.001) were significantly associated with CKD, whereas age, body mass index, prostate-specific antigen level, prostate volume, postvoid residual, or International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS) were not. When individual symptoms from the IPSS were analysed, only weak stream ( P = 0.041) and hesitancy ( P = 0.048), both obstruction-related, were significantly associated with CKD status in age and comorbidity-adjusted analyses. The results of secondary analysis with CKD defined as an eGFR of <60 mL/min/1.73 m2 were similar. CONCLUSION Our results show that decreased peak flow rate and a history of hypertension and/or diabetes are significantly associated with CKD in men seeking management for LUTS from BPH of varying severity. Large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma (LCNEC) of the lung is a rare and aggressive tumour with a poor prognosis. Lung cancer metastases to the prostate are also uncommon, and are usually found incidentally during autopsy. Most reported primary lung cancers with prostatic metastases are small cell carcinomas, and prostatic metastases from LCNEC of the lung have not been reported previously. Purpose. To determine the effect of simple use of suppository povidone-iodine on infectious complications after transrectal ultrasonography-guided biopsy of the prostate. Methods. All 481 patients are included and received antibiotic prophylaxis. Among them, 360 patients received povidone-iodine suppository (Gynobetadine; 200 mg) immediately prior to biopsy and 121 patients did not. Infectious complications were classified. To evaluate bactericidal effects, we counted bacterial colonies in the rectum, harvested from a rectal swab before insertion of the suppository and after biopsy. Aliquots of the suspended bacterial strains were added to Mueller-Hinton agar medium for incubation. Colony counts were determined. Results. Infectious complications developed in 1 case (0.3%) in the rectal preparation group (Group 1) and in 8 cases (6.6%) in the nonrectal preparation group (Group 2). One in Group 1 had a fever without sepsis. Two patients had sepsis and six had fever without sepsis in Group 2. Rectal preparation was a statistically significant risk factor influencing the development of infectious complications. In vitro experiments, the mean number of colony-forming units decreased 99.9% after the rectal povidone-iodine preparation. Conclusions. All through the biopsy, povidone-iodine melted into the rectum and decreased the bacterial colony count. Notch signaling plays an important role in arterial-venous specification during embryogenesis. However, the role of Notch signaling in lymphatic development is poorly understood. Here, we show that activated Notch and its downstream effectors, Hey1 and Hey2, repress the expression of the master control gene of lymphatic development Prox1, and induce arterial phenotypes in human lymphatic endothelial cells (LECs). We then translated our findings to define the molecular basis for the disturbed lymphatic development of nuchal edema (NE) of aneuploid human fetuses. We found that Hey1 was upregulated in LECs of developing jugular lymph sacs (JLS) of Down syndrome fetuses, whereas Prox1, LYVE-1 and podoplanin were down-regulated. Moreover, the arterial markers ephrinB2 and neuropilin-1 were upregulated and the venous marker EphB4 was transiently expressed. These data indicate that JLS endothelial ceils of NE fetuses arrested lymphatic differentiation program, regained venous phenotype and acquired arterial endothelial cell identity. We propose that dysregulated Notch signaling induces pathological arterialization of developing lymphatic vessels in human Down syndrome fetuses with NE. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
