Summary: Plants of the Elaeagnaceae family are widely used to treat various health disorders owing to their natural phytochemicals. Seabuckthorn (Hippophae rhamnoides L.) is an economically and ecologically important species within the family with richness of biologically and pharmacologically active substances. Here, we present a chromosome‐level genome assembly of seabuckthorn (http://hipp.shengxin.ren/), the first genome sequence of Elaeagnaceae, which has a total length of 849.04 Mb with scaffold N50 of 69.52 Mb and 30 864 annotated genes. Two sequential tetraploidizations with one occurring ~36‐41 million years ago (Mya) and the last ~24–27 Mya were inferred, resulting in expansion of genes related to ascorbate and aldarate metabolism, lipid biosynthesis, and fatty acid elongation. Comparative genomic analysis reconstructed the evolutionary trajectories of the seabuckthorn genome with the predicted ancestral genome of 14 proto‐chromosomes. Comparative transcriptomic and metabonomic analyses identified some key genes contributing to high content of polyunsaturated fatty acids and ascorbic acid (AsA). Additionally, we generated and analysed 55 whole‐genome sequences of diverse accessions, and identified 9.80 million genetic variants in the seabuckthorn germplasms. Intriguingly, genes in selective sweep regions identified through population genomic analysis appeared to contribute to the richness of AsA and fatty acid in seabuckthorn fruits, among which GalLDH, GMPase and ACC, TER were the potentially major‐effect causative genes controlling AsA and fatty acid content of the fruit, respectively. Our research offers novel insights into the molecular basis underlying phytochemical innovation of seabuckthorn, and provides valuable resources for exploring the evolution of the Elaeagnaceae family and molecular breeding. The most popular approach to fabricating organic solar cells (OSCs) is solution processing a mixture of donor (D) and acceptor (A) materials into an active layer with a bulk heterojunction (BHJ) nanostructure. Herein, it is demonstrated that the interdigitated heterojunction (IHJ) is a more suitable nanostructure of the active layer for high‐performance OSCs whereas it is a long standing challenge to realize well‐defined IHJ structures. In this study, a facile and versatile sequential solution processing method is developed to produce an IHJ nanostructure with power conversion efficiency reaching 18.74% (18.10% for BHJ the counterpart) by fabricating a donor film with nanopores created by a wax additive, sequentially casting the acceptor on top of infiltrating the nanopores. Compared to the BHJ, the IHJ structure with an interpillar distance within the exciton diffusion length can afford a large bulk D/A interface for efficient exciton dissociation with a minimized charge recombination while free electrons and holes can transport to the respective electrodes through more straightforward pathways, thus enhance performance. Furthermore, the D or A phase in the IHJ device contacts with only one electrode, which can prevent shunting between the anode and cathode and facilitate the industrial mass production of OSCs. Organic solar cells (OSCs) have attracted wide research interests in the past decades. In recent years, our group mainly focused on the new photovoltaic materials design and device engineering technologies for highly efficient OSCs. This account mainly summarizes our recent studies on the structural design of wide bandgap (WBG) polymers and their morphology control as well as applications in OSCs. Additionally, we introduce our work on binary and ternary blend devices and tandem solar cells containing these materials. Additives are extensively explored for improving PEDOT:PSS performances mainly through the removal of excess PSS and as a secondary dopant. In this work, amine‐containing additives are introduced to PEDOT:PSS solutions as processing additives where the interactions to the PSS are anticipated through electrostatic interactions. Such interactions affected solution property where the increased viscosity is found to significantly increase the out‐of‐plane conductivity of the PEDOT:PSS thin films. Organic solar cells adopting these additive‐assisted processed PEDOT:PSS layers as hole transporting layers (HTL) showed the improved device performances that resulted from the reduced series resistance provided by the PEDOT:PSS HTL. A top power conversion efficiency of 18.28% is achieved with para‐phenylenediamine (PPD) additive in the PEDOT:PSS HTL, which is 3.5% higher compared to devices with neat PEDOT:PSS thin film as the HTL. Volatile solid additives have attracted increasing attention in optimizing the morphology and improving the performance of currently dominated non‐fullerene acceptor‐based organic solar cells (OSCs). However, the underlying principles governing the rational design of volatile solid additives remain elusive. Herein, a series of efficient volatile solid additives are successfully developed by the crossbreeding effect of chalcogenation and iodination for optimizing the morphology and improving the photovoltaic performances of OSCs. Five benzene derivatives of 1,4‐dimethoxybenzene (DOB), 1‐iodo‐4‐methoxybenzene (OIB), 1‐iodo‐4‐methylthiobenzene (SIB), 1,4‐dimethylthiobenzene (DSB) and 1,4‐diiodobenzene (DIB) are systematically studied, where the widely used DIB is used as the reference. The effect of chalcogenation and iodination on the overall property is comprehensively investigated, which indicates that the versatile functional groups provided various types of noncovalent interactions with the host materials for modulating the morphology. Among them, SIB with the combination of sulphuration and iodination enabled more appropriate interactions with the host blend, giving rise to a highly ordered molecular packing and more favorable morphology. As a result, the binary OSCs based on PM6:L8‐BO and PBTz‐F:L8‐BO as well as the ternary OSCs based on PBTz‐F:PM6:L8‐BO achieved impressive high PCEs of 18.87%, 18.81% and 19.68%, respectively, which are among the highest values for OSCs. A double‐fibril network of the photoactive layer morphology is recognized as an ideal structure facilitating exciton diffusion and charge carrier transport for high‐performance organic solar cells (OSCs). However, in the layer‐by‐layer processed OSCs (LbL‐OSCs), polymer donors and small molecule acceptors (SMAs) are separately deposited, and it is challenging to realize a fibril network of pure SMAs with the absence of tight interchain entanglement as polymers. In this work, crystalline small molecule donors (SMDs), named TDZ‐3TR and SeDZ‐3TR, were designed and introduced into the L8‐BO acceptor solution, forcing the phase separation and molecular fibrilization. SeDZ‐3TR showed higher crystallinity and lower miscibility with L8‐BO acceptor than TDZ‐3TR, enabling more driving force to favor the phase separation and better molecular fibrilization of L8‐BO. On the other hand, two donor polymers of PM6 and D18 with different fibril widths and lengths were put together to optimize the fibril network of the donor layer. The simultaneously optimization of the acceptor and donor layers resulted in a more ideal double‐fibril network of the photoactive layer and an impressive power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 19.38 % in LbL‐OSCs. Controlling the nanoparticle‐cell membrane interaction to achieve easy and fast membrane anchoring and cellular internalization is of great importance in a variety of biomedical applications. Here we report a simple and versatile strategy to maneuver the nanoparticle‐cell membrane interaction by creating a tunable hydrophobic protrusion on Janus particles through swelling‐induced symmetry breaking. When the Janus particle contacts cell membrane, the protrusion will induce membrane wrapping, leading the particles to docking to the membrane, followed by drawing the whole particles into the cell. The efficiencies of both membrane anchoring and cellular internalization can be promoted by optimizing the size of the protrusion. In vitro, the Janus particles can quickly anchor to the cell membrane in 1 h and be internalized within 24 h, regardless of the types of cells involved. In vivo, the Janus particles can effectively anchor to the brain and skin tissues to provide a high retention in these tissues after intracerebroventricular, intrahippocampal, or subcutaneous injection. Employing volatile solid additives have emerged as a promising method to optimize the morphology and improve the performance of organic solar cells (OSCs). However, principles governing the efficient design of solid additives remain elusive. Herein, the programmed fluorination and/or bromination on benzene core to develop efficient additives for OSCs is reported. The programmed fluorination and/or bromination endow the five halogen benzene derivatives, 1,3,5‐trifluorobenzene, hexafluorobenzene, 1,3,5‐tribromo‐2,4,6‐trifluorobenzene (TFTB), 1,3,5‐tribromobenzene, and hexabromobenzene, with different melting and boiling points, volatility, as well as interactions with the host blend. Studies indicate that the additives with extremely high and low volatility are almost powerless and even detrimental to the morphology evolution. Among them, the combination of fluorine and bromine atoms on TFTB not only enables the more appropriate m.p./b.p. and volatility, but also exerts stronger molecular interactions with the host blend, giving rise to higher ordered molecular packing and more favorable morphology. Importantly, TFTB exhibits good universality to optimize the performances of OSCs with high power conversion efficiencies (PCEs; over 18%) in a group of binary blend systems, and an impressive PCE of 19.43% in the ternary PBTz‐F:PM6:L8‐BO system. Organic semiconductors consist of a conjugated backbone and flexible sidechains. Compared to the meticulous design of backbones, less attention has been paid to the investigation of sidechains, in particular their spatial orientation. Herein, three non‐fullerene acceptors, anti‐PDFC, syn‐PDFC, and PDFC‐Ph, are applied in all‐small‐molecule organic solar cells (ASM‐OSCs) to reveal the varied effects of sidechains on morphology and device performance. With spatially orthogonal alkyl chains, anti‐PDFC and syn‐PDFC show unique bimodal lamellar packing and moderate crystallinity. When blending with an efficient binary BTR‐Cl/Y6 system, anti‐PDFC as well as syn‐PDFC not only form their own crystal phase but also improve the packing order of BTR‐Cl, consequently enhancing the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of ternary ASM‐OSC to be 14.56%. However, although PDFC‐Ph has an identical backbone with anti‐PDFC, the alternated sidechains make it relatively amorphous, which is prone to damage the original packing of the host donor/acceptor, and thus deteriorating the device performance. When PC71BM is added to optimize the morphology further, the triple‐acceptor device involving anti‐PDFC realizes a PCE of 15.67%, which is among the best efficiencies in ASM‐OSCs. Liquid chromophores constitute a rare but intriguing class of molecules that are in high demand for the design of luminescent inks, liquid semiconductors, and solar energy storage materials. The most common way to achieve liquid chromophores involves the introduction of long alkyl chains, which, however, significantly reduces the chromophore density. Here, strategy is presented that allows for the preparation of liquid chromophores with a minimal increase in molecular weight, using the important class of perylenes as an example. Two synergistic effects are harnessed: (1) the judicious positioning of short alkyl substituents, and (2) equimolar mixing, which in unison results in a liquid material. A series of 1‐alkyl perylene derivatives is synthesized and it is found that short ethyl or butyl chains reduce the melting temperature from 278 °C to as little as 70 °C. Then, two low‐melting derivatives are mixed, which results in materials that do not crystallize due to the increased configurational entropy of the system. As a result, liquid chromophores with the lowest reported molecular weight increase compared to the neat chromophore are obtained. The mixing strategy is readily applicable to other π‐conjugated systems and, hence, promises to yield a wide range of low molecular weight liquid chromophores. A perylene blend, liquid at room temperature, was achieved by mixing two derivatives with similar photophysical properties. The resulting material is the liquid chromophore with the smallest weight increase due to solubilizing substituents presently known. The analysis suggests that the approach of thermodynamic mixing is general, and hence, applicable to any parent compound, yielding liquid chromophores with a minimal weight increase. Combining targeted tumor therapy with tissue regeneration represents a promising strategy for synergistic tumor therapy. In this study, a multifunctional living material is constructed with human‐derived adipose stem cells (hADSCs) and antibody‐modified hydroxyapatite nanorods (nHAP) for targeted drug delivery and bone regeneration following surgery. The living material delivers the therapeutics to the tumor site efficiently based on the strength of the inherent tumor tropism of hADSCs. The bioconjugation of nHAP with hADSCs via specific antibody modification is found to be biocompatible, even when loaded with the chemotherapeutic drug doxorubicin (Dox). The endocytosis of nHAP stimulates the osteogenic differentiation of hADSCs, promoting bone tissue regeneration. Moreover, the antibody‐modified nHAP‐hADSC conjugate exhibits targeted tumor delivery, which is further facilitated by pH‐triggered release of Dox, inducing apoptosis of tumor cells with low toxicity to healthy tissues. Therefore, the present study provides a general strategy for engineering living materials to achieve targeted tumor therapy and bone tissue regeneration after surgery, which can be extended to other disease types. Due to the unwarranted lifespan and differentiation, applying neural stem cells (NSCs) in spinal cord injury (SCI) remains challenging. In this study, 3D bioactive hydroxyapatite (HAp) nanobelt haystack‐mouse NSC (mNSC) hybrid spheroids are customized in which the specific nanobelt haystack framework provided the structural function of hypoxia alleviation in the spherical core and biological process of neural differentiation promotion. Commodified with superparamagnetic ferroferric oxide (Fe3O4) nanoparticles and a polydopamine (PDA) coating, the HAp nanobelts are endowed with magnetic field‐driven properties and enhanced cell‐nanobelt adhesion. The engineered bioresponsive 3D nanobelt haystack‐mNSC hybrid spheroids effectively repair SCI in vivo, showing new potential for stem cell therapy by incorporating nanomaterials in 3D culture based on cell‐material interactions. After thermal annealing (TA) treatment, the film‐forming ability could be further improved. The additional UV‐ozone (UVO) treatment continuously improved the film quality and increased the work function and conductivity of such HTL. The resulting TA & UVO modified Ni(NO3)2 & Hacac HTL produced highly efficient organic solar cells with exciting power conversion efficiencies of 18.42 % and 19.02 % for PM6 : BTP‐eC9 and D18 : BTP‐Th devices, respectively, much higher than the control PEDOT : PSS devices. A desired morphology is essential for achieving efficient polymer solar cells. Donors and acceptors with appropriate crystallization can lead to a suitable phase-separated morphology for effective photocurrent generation process. Inspired by the success of Y6 acceptors and the 2D side chain engineering on popular polymer donors and small molecule acceptors, the usage of unique 2D 3,4-ethylene dioxythiophene (EDOT) side chains on Y6 to regulate its crystallinity, compatibility, and thus the related blend morphology is explored. In this study, two molecules of BTP-EDOT-4F and BTP-EDOT-4Cl with such unique 2D EDOT side chains are designed and synthesized. Due to the advantage of EDOT side chain, when these molecules are blended with PM6, the decent power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of 16.78% and 15.87% are obtained. Furthermore, BTP-EDOT-4F is selected as the third component and added into PM6:L8-BO binary system to form ternary blends. The optimized crystallinity, compatibility, and morphology of such ternary blend are discovered in the presence of BTP-EDOT-4F, which enables efficient exciton dissociation and charge transport as well as decreased recombination, resulting in higher short circuit current density Jsc) and fill factor. Constructing terpolymer has attracted increasing attention as a strategy to improve the performance of polymer solar cell. Terpolymer usually offers an opportunity to lower the frontier molecular orbital energy level, introduces additional absorption band and sometimes optimizes the morphology of the active blend. Generally, the additional segment in terpolymer backbone inevitably introduces backbone disorder, which causes entropy rises. However, selecting a suitable dipole unit introduces extra driving forces for crystallization by enhancing intermolecular interactions. This provides a handy knob for tradeoff between intermolecular interaction and backbone disorder, thus regulating the blend morphology. Herein, a high dipole and electron‐deficient group of pyrrolo[3,4‐f]benzotriazole‐5,7(6H)‐dione (TzBI) is incorporated into the high‐performance donor polymer and a series of terpolymers with different content of TzBI are designed. As expected, the morphology is optimized gradually for improving charge generation and charge transport, also suppressing charge recombination. The champion device with 10% TzBI exhibited a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 18.36%, which is 5% increase compared to the controlled device. This study presents a charming terpolymer strategy by highly electron‐deficient and high dipole segment to realize a tradeoff between intermolecular interaction and backbone disorder, facilitating the optimization of morphology and elevation of fill factor and device efficiency. Side‐chain engineering with heteroatoms is not only effective in tuning frontier molecular orbitals, but also possible for forming secondary bonds which can be utilized to planarize the molecular backbone, hence, improving the photon absorption as well as charge‐transport abilities of polymer solar‐cell (PSC) materials. Herein, two types of unconventional side chains, namely carboxylate and carbamate, containing various heteroatoms are introduced to the thiophene bridges in high performance benzodithiophene (BDT) based donor polymers to from the novel polymers PTzTz‐C and PTzTz‐N, respectively. In these polymers, non‐covalent O⋅⋅⋅S and N⋅⋅⋅H interactions induce a high tendency to aggregation. In a ternary‐blend PSC with PTzTz‐N added to the high‐performance D18 : BTP‐eC9 blend, complimentary absorption and improved thin‐film morphology were observed with a top power conversion efficiency of 18.76 %, which is an improvement of almost 5 % over the D18 : BTP‐eC9 binary blends. Despite remarkable breakthrough made by virtue of "polymerized small‐molecule acceptor (PSMA)" strategy recently, the limited selection pool of high‐performance polymer acceptors and long‐standing challenge in morphology control impede their further developments. Herein, three PSMAs of PYDT‐2F, PYDT‐3F, and PYDT‐4F are developed by introducing different fluorine atoms on the end groups and/or bithiophene spacers to fine‐tune their optoelectronic properties for high‐performance PSMAs. The PSMAs exhibit narrow bandgap and energy levels that match well with PM6 donor. The fluorination promotes the crystallization of the polymer chain for enhanced electron mobility, which is further improved by following n‐doping with benzyl viologen additive. Moreover, the miscibility is also improved by introducing more fluorine atoms, which promotes the intermixing with PM6 donor. Among them, PYDT‐3F exhibits well‐balanced high crystallinity and miscibility with PM6 donor; thus, the layer‐by‐layer processed PM6/PYDT‐3F film obtains an optimal nanofibril morphology with submicron length and ≈23 nm width of fibrils, facilitating the charge separation and transport. The resulting PM6/PYDT‐3F devices realizes a record high power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 17.41% and fill factor of 77.01%, higher than the PM6/PYDT‐2F (PCE = 16.25%) and PM6/PYDT‐4F (PCE = 16.77%) devices. A robust hole transporting layer (HTL), using the cost‐effective Cobalt(II) acetate tetrahydrate (Co(OAc)2⋅4 H2O) as the precursor, was simply processed from its aqueous solution followed by thermal annealing (TA) and UV‐ozone (UVO) treatments. The TA treatment induced the loss of crystal water followed by oxidization of Co(OAc)2⋅4 H2O precursor, which increased the work function. However, TA treatment differently realize a high work function and ideal morphology for charge extraction. The resulting problems could be circumvented easily by additional UVO treatment, which also enhanced the conductivity and lowered the resistance for charge transport. A robust hole transporting layer (HTL), using the cost‐effective Cobalt(II) acetate tetrahydrate (Co(OAc)2⋅4 H2O) as the precursor, was simply processed from its aqueous solution followed by thermal annealing (TA) and UV‐ozone (UVO) treatments. The TA treatment induced the loss of crystal water followed by oxidization of Co(OAc)2⋅4 H2O precursor, which increased the work function. However, TA treatment differently realize a high work function and ideal morphology for charge extraction. The resulting problems could be circumvented easily by additional UVO treatment, which also enhanced the conductivity and lowered the resistance for charge transport. Organic solar cells incorporating non‐fullerene acceptors (NFAs) have reached remarkable power conversion efficiencies of over 18%. Unlike fullerene derivatives, NFAs tend to crystallize from solutions, resulting in bulk heterojunctions that include a crystalline acceptor phase. This must be considered in any morphology‐function models. Here, it is confirmed that high‐performing solution‐processed indacenodithienothiophene‐based NFAs, i.e., ITIC and its derivatives ITIC‐M, ITIC‐2F, and ITIC‐Th, exhibit at least two crystalline forms. In addition to highly ordered polymorphs that form at high temperatures, NFAs arrange into a low‐temperature metastable phase that is readily promoted via solution processing and leads to the highest device efficiencies. Intriguingly, the low‐temperature forms seem to feature a continuous network that favors charge transport despite of a poorly order along the π–π stacking direction. As the optical absorption of the structurally more disordered low‐temperature phase can surpass that of the more ordered polymorphs while displaying comparable—or even higher—charge transport properties, it is argued that such a packing structure is an important feature for reaching highest device efficiencies, thus, providing guidelines for future materials design and crystal engineering activities. In this work, the properties and performance of three structurally similar non‐fullerene acceptors (named BTP‐Ph, BTP‐Th, and BTP‐C11) possessing different side chains on the β‐positions of the thienothiophene units of the Y6 molecule are systematically studied. The steric and electronic effects of these side chains on the blend morphology and device performance based on the PTQ10 donor polymer are investigated. It is found that the thiophene and benzene units on the side chains introduce more steric hindrance and thus slightly reduce the crystallinity of the molecule. However, an interesting matching trend with the PTQ10 donor that appears to better match with the less crystalline molecules is observed. Overall, PTQ10:BTP‐Ph delivers the highest performance of 17.1% due to the suitable phase separation among three blends. Next, a ternary strategy is explored by incorporating BTP‐Th/BTP‐C11 with better molecular packing into PTQ10:BTP‐Ph, which successfully extends photon response, enhances charge transport, and suppresses charge recombination compared with the binary blend. Due to these synergistic effects, the ternary device based on PTQ10:BTP‐Ph:BTP‐Th achieves an outstanding power conversion efficiency of 17.6% with a fill factor of 78.8%, which is the highest value of PTQ10‐based devices to date. While photovoltaic blends based on non‐fullerene acceptors are touted for their thermal stability, this type of acceptor tends to crystallize, which can result in a gradual decrease in photovoltaic performance and affects the reproducibility of the devices. Two halogenated indacenodithienothiophene‐based acceptors that readily co‐crystallize upon mixing are studied, which indicates that the use of an acceptor mixture alone does not guarantee the formation of a disordered mixture. The addition of the donor polymer to the acceptor mixture readily suppresses the crystallization, which results in a fine‐grained ternary blend with nanometer‐sized domains that do not coarsen due to a high Tg ≈ 200 °C. As a result, annealing at temperatures of up to 170 °C does not markedly affect the photovoltaic performance of ternary devices, in contrast to binary devices that suffer from acceptor crystallization in the active layer. The results indicate that the ternary approach enables the use of high‐temperature processing protocols, which are needed for upscaling and high‐throughput fabrication of organic solar cells. Further, ternary devices display a stable photovoltaic performance at 130 °C for at least 205 h, which indicates that the use of acceptor mixtures allows to fabricate devices with excellent thermal stability. Foaming of plastics allows for extensive tuning of mechanical and physicochemical properties. Utilizing the foam architecture for plastic semiconductors can be used to improve ingression of external molecular species that govern the operation of organic electronic devices. In case of plastic thermoelectrics, utilizing solid semiconductors with realistic (millimeter (mm)-thick) dimensions does not permit sequential doping-while sequential doping offers the higher thermoelectric performance compared to other methods-because this doping methodology is diffusion limited. In this work, a fabrication process for poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) foams is presented, based on a combination of salt leaching and thermally induced phase separation. The obtained micro- and nanoporous architecture permits rapid and uniform doping of mm-thick foams with 2,3,5,6-tetrafluoro-7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethane, while thick solid P3HT structures suffer from protracted doping times and a dopant-depleted central region. Importantly, the thermoelectric performance of a P3HT foam is largely retained when normalized with regard to the quantity of used material. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In organic solar cells (OSCs), the energy of the charge-transfer (CT) complexes at the donor-acceptor interface, ECT, determines the maximum open-circuit voltage ( VOC). The coexistence of phases with different degrees of order in the donor or the acceptor, as in blends of semi-crystalline donors and fullerenes in bulk heterojunction layers, influences the distribution of CT states and the VOC enormously. Yet, the question of how structural heterogeneities alter CT states and the VOC is seldom addressed systematically. In this work, we combine experimental measurements of vacuum-deposited rubrene/C60 bilayer OSCs, with varying microstructure and texture, with density functional theory calculations to determine how relative molecular orientations and extents of structural order influence ECT and VOC. We find that varying the microstructure of rubrene gives rise to CT bands with varying energies. The CT band that originates from crystalline rubrene lies up to ≈0.4 eV lower in energy compared to the one that arises from amorphous rubrene. These low-lying CT states contribute strongly to VOC losses and result mainly from hole delocalization in aggregated rubrene. This work points to the importance of realizing interfacial structural control that prevents the formation of low ECT configurations and maximizes VOC. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Blending of small-molecule organic semiconductors (OSCs) with amorphous polymers is known to yield high performance organic thin film transistors (OTFTs). Vertical stratification of the OSC and polymer binder into welldefined layers is crucial in such systems and their vertical order determines whether the coating is compatible with a top and/or a bottom gate OTFT configuration. Here, we investigate the formation of blends prepared via spin-coating in conditions which yield bilayer and trilayer stratifications. We use a combination of in situ experimental and computational tools to study the competing effects of formulation thermodynamics and process kinetics in mediating the final vertical stratification. It is shown that trilayer stratification (OSC/polymer/OSC) is the thermodynamically favored configuration and that formation of the buried OSC layer can be kinetically inhibited in certain conditions of spin-coating, resulting in a bilayer stack instead. The analysis reveals here that preferential loss of the OSC, combined with early aggregation of the polymer phase due to rapid drying, inhibit the formation of the buried OSC layer. The fluid dynamics and drying kinetics are then moderated during spin-coating to promote trilayer stratification with a high quality buried OSC layer which yields unusually high mobility >2 cm² V-1 s-1 in the bottom-gate top-contact configuration.
