With the rapid growth of advanced nanoengineering strategies, there are great implications for therapeutic immunostimulators formulated in nanomaterials to combat cancer. It is crucial to direct immunostimulators to the right tissue and specific immune cells at the right time, thereby orchestrating the desired, potent, and durable immune response against cancer. The flexibility of nanoformulations in size, topology, softness, and multifunctionality allows precise regulation of nano‐immunological activities for enhanced therapeutic effect. To grasp the modulation of immune response, research efforts are needed to understand the interactions of immune cells at lymph organs and tumor tissues, where the nanoformulations guide the immunostimulators to function on tissue specific subsets of immune cells. In this review, recent advanced nanoformulations targeting specific subset of immune cells, such as dendritic cells (DCs), T cells, monocytes, macrophages, and natural killer (NK) cells are summarized and discussed, and clinical development of nano‐paradigms for targeted cancer immunotherapy is highlighted. Here the focus is on the targeting nanoformulations that can passively or actively target certain immune cells by overcoming the physiobiological barriers, instead of directly injecting into tissues. The opportunities and remaining obstacles for the clinical translation of immune cell targeting nanoformulations in cancer therapy are also discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The current research aimed to examine the relationship between residential mobility and loss aversion, a ubiquitous decision‐making bias conceptualized in prospect theory. Combining correlational, experimental, and electroencephalography approaches, we tested the hypothesis that residential mobility may increase loss aversion. The results revealed a positive correlation between residential mobility and loss aversion (Study 1). These effects were moderated by individuals' residential mobility/stability mindsets. Behaviorally, we observed a positive association between residential mobility history and loss aversion among individuals with a high (vs. low) subjective uncertainty after manipulating their residential mobility mindset by priming them with a mobile or stable lifestyle (Study 2). On the neural level, we found that the mindset of residential mobility (vs. stability) enhanced the differential feedback‐related negativity (FRN) modulations between the large‐win and large‐loss conditions among Chinese participants with a high subjective uncertainty (Study 3). In conclusion, residential mobility elevated loss aversion by enhancing feelings of subjective uncertainty. Nonspecific immunotherapies often induce general immune activation or suppression. Conversely, antigen‐specific immunotherapy, which refers to dampening or augmenting adaptive immunity against a disease‐specific antigen, increases T‐cell target specificity to pathological tissues, thereby reducing side effects on the rest of the immune system. Advances in engineering strategies for nanomaterials have enabled the feasible modulation of their physicochemical features to incorporate antigens and inherently interact with innate immune cells, which remarkably amplifies the orchestration of antigen‐specific immune responses against cancer and autoimmune diseases. From this contemporary perspective, the basic principles of antigen‐specific immunotherapy are briefly introduced and we elucidate how the latest nanoengineering paradigms regulate the functions of heterogeneous subsets of immune cells, such as antigen‐presenting cells, B cells, and regulatory or cytotoxic T cells, promoting antigen‐specific immunotherapy to treat autoimmune diseases and cancer. An outlook on prospects and remaining challenges have been discussed for, translating scientific discoveries of powerful nanomaterials into medical advances in antigen‐specific immunotherapy, thus offering new treatment modalities for patients with unmet needs. Multifunctional core-shell-structured dendritic mesoporous silica nanoparticles with a fullerene-doped silica core, a dendritic silica shell and large pores have been prepared. Summary: Although some nucleotide binding, leucine‐rich repeat immune receptor (NLR) proteins conferring resistance to specific viruses have been identified in dicot plants, NLR proteins involved in viral resistance have not been described in monocots.We have used map‐based cloning to isolate the CC‐NB‐LRR (CNL) Barley stripe mosaic virus (BSMV) resistance gene barley stripe resistance 1 (BSR1) from Brachypodium distachyon Bd3‐1 inbred line. Stable BSR1 transgenic Brachypodium line Bd21‐3, barley (Golden Promise) and wheat (Kenong 199) plants developed resistance against BSMV ND18 strain. Allelic variation analyses indicated that BSR1 is present in several Brachypodium accessions collected from countries in the Middle East.Protein domain swaps revealed that the intact LRR domain and the C‐terminus of BSR1 are required for resistance. BSR1 interacts with the BSMV ND18 TGB1 protein in planta and shows temperature‐sensitive antiviral resistance. The R390 and T392 residues of TGB1ND (ND18 strain) and the G196 and K197 residues within the BSR1 P‐loop motif are key amino acids required for immune activation.BSR1 is the first cloned virus resistance gene encoding a typical CNL protein in monocots, highlighting the utility of the Brachypodium model for isolation and analysis of agronomically important genes for crop improvement. There are few researches on the application of multifunctional carbon quantum dots (CQDs) in analysis and detection. In this study, carbon quantum dots (CQDs) with dual‐function detection were synthesized by the one‐step hydrothermal method with citric acid as the carbon source and o‐phenylendiamine as the nitrogen source to detect Fe3+ and sunset yellow. The morphology of the prepared CQDs and the surface functional groups were characterized using TEM, FTIR, XPS, UV‐Vis spectroscopy, and fluorescence spectrophotometer. The results show that the morphology of CQDs is nearly spherical and well dispersed, with a particle size range of 1.24∼6 nm and the average particle size was 3.23 nm. The surface of the CQDs has hydrophilic groups, such as OH, −COOH and −NH2. CQDs exhibited good acid and alkali resistance, salt resistance, and photobleaching resistance under different conditions. The detection limits of CQDs for Fe3+ and sunset yellow were 1.52 μM and 0.812 μM, respectively. The recoveries of actual samples were 96.65 %∼104.85 % and 95.4 %∼104.55 %, with relative standard deviations (RSDs) of less than 6 %. Novel composites of iron oxide encapsulated in macroporous silica with excellent arsenic adsorption performance have been successfully developed. Macroporous silica foams with large pore sizes of ≈100 nm and a high pore volume of 1.6 cm3 g−1 are chosen as the porous matrix. Electron tomography technique confirms that γ-Fe2O3 nanoparticles with an average particle size of ≈6 nm are spatially well-dispersed and anchored on the pore walls at even a high γ-Fe2O3 content of 34.8 wt%, rather than forming aggregates inside the pores or on the external surface. The open large-pore structure, high loading amount, and the non-aggregated nature of γ-Fe2O3 nanoparticles lead to increased adsorption sites and thus high adsorption capacities of both As (V) and As (III) without pre-treatment (248 and 320 mg g−1, respectively). Moreover, the composites can reduce the concentration of both As (V) and As (III) from 100 to 2 μg L−1. It is also demonstrated that the composites can be applied in a household drinking water treatment device, which can continuously treat 20 L of wastewater containing As (V) with the effluent concentration lower than the World Health Organization standard. Immune responses stimulated by photodynamic therapy (PDT) and photothermal therapy (PTT) are a promising strategy for the treatment of advanced cancer. However, the antitumor efficacy by PDT or PTT alone is less potent and unsustainable against cancer metastasis and relapse. In this study, Gd3+ and chlorin e6 loaded single‐walled carbon nanohorns (Gd‐Ce6@SWNHs) are developed, and it is demonstrated that they are a strong immune adjuvant, and have high tumor targeting and penetration efficiency. Then, three in vivo mouse cancer models are established, and it is found that sequential PDT and PTT using Gd‐Ce6@SWNHs synergistically promotes systemic antitumor immune responses, where PTT stimulates dendritic cells (DCs) to secrete IL‐6 and TNF‐α, while PDT triggers upregulation of IFN‐γ and CD80. Moreover, migration of Gd‐Ce6@SWNHs from the targeted tumors to tumor‐draining lymph nodes sustainably activates the DCs to generate a durable immune response, which eventually eliminates the distant metastases without using additional therapeutics. Gd‐Ce6@SWNHs intervened phototherapies also generate durable and long‐term memory immune responses to tolerate and prevent cancer rechallenge. Therefore, this study demonstrates that sequential PDT and PTT using Gd‐Ce6@SWNHs under moderate conditions elicits cooperative and long‐lasting antitumor immune responses, which are promising for the treatment of patients with advanced metastatic cancers. Mn-doped CuO nanosheets were prepared through a hydrothermal method to enhance their photocatalytic property. The structural and morphological features were monitored by using X-Ray diffraction (XRD) and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) with energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). UV-vis absorption spectra showed the enhance absorption performance both in UV and visible light region. The band gaps were also calculate and the minimum value was 1.25 eV. The photocatalytic activity was investigated by the degradation of methylene blue (MB), which indicated that the photoactivity of samples depended on the amount of Mn2+ incorporated into the CuO lattice. The improved performance of photocatalysts can be attributed to enhanced light absorption and lower electron-hole recombination. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this article, flower-like CdS structures have been prepared by a hydrothermal method with SDBS as surfactant. The influences of different experimental conditions on the morphologies, UV-Vis and fluorescence properties of CdS have been investigated. The performances of CdS have been analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) and room-temperature photoluminescence (PL). The XRD result indicates that the flower-like CdS structures are of hexagonal phase. The FESEM results indicate that the main role of SDBS is to make the CdS crystals assemble together to form the flower-like structures. The UV-Vis results show CdS has a strong absorption in the ultraviolet region and visible-light region. The PL results show CdS has two emission peaks, respectively at 461 nm and 553 nm. Radial-like ZnO structures were prepared using zinc sulfate (ZnSO4·7H2O) and zinc acetate [Zn(CH3COO)2·2H2O] as zinc sources by a facile template-free hydrothermal method in this paper. Structural and optical properties of radial-like ZnO structures are characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), UV-vis spectrophotometer and photoluminescence measurement (PL). It has been found that the distinct surface morphologies of radial-like ZnO structures grown by different zinc sources. Slim radial-like ZnO with a hexagonal wurtzite structure is grown by using ZnSO4·7H2O as zinc sources, whereas coarse radial-like ZnO with zincite structure is achieved by zinc acetate. The UV-vis absorption spectra of them both display an obvious and significant absorption in the ultraviolet region. The room temperature PL spectra of ZnO structures grown by two different zinc sources possess a common feature that consists of a strong ultraviolet (UV) peak and visible emission band.
