Neurons are post‐mitotic cells, with microtubules playing crucial roles in axonal transport and growth. Kinesin family member 2c (KIF2C), a member of the Kinesin‐13 family, possesses the ability to depolymerize microtubules and is involved in remodelling the microtubule lattice. Myocyte enhancer factor 2c (MEF2C) was initially identified as a regulator of muscle differentiation but has recently been associated with neurological abnormalities such as severe cognitive impairment, stereotyping, epilepsy and brain malformations when mutated or deleted. However, further investigation is required to determine which target genes MEF2C acts upon to influence neuronal function as a transcription regulator. Our data demonstrate that knockdown of both Mef2c and Kif2c significantly impacts spinal motor neuron development and behaviour in zebrafish. Luciferase reporter assays and chromosome immunoprecipitation assays, along with down/upregulated expression analysis, revealed that MFE2C functions as a novel transcription regulator for the Kif2c gene. Additionally, the knockdown of either Mef2c or Kif2c expression in E18 cortical neurons substantially reduces the number of primary neurites and axonal branches during neuronal development in vitro without affecting neurite length. Finally, depletion of Kif2c eliminated the effects of overexpression of Mef2c on the neurite branching. The structured sand presents significant interparticle bonding and anisotropy, resulting in significant differences in the physical and mechanical properties from the pure sand. This study proposes a new surrogate model based on the concept of multi‐fidelity residual neural network (MR‐NN) as an alternative to DEM simulation for predicting the mechanical behaviours of structured sand with different initial anisotropy and saving largely computational costs. The model is initially trained using low‐fidelity (LF) data to focus on capturing the main underpinning correlations between macroscopic mechanical parameters with inter‐particle properties and anisotropic state variables (i.e., microscopic fabric and tilting angle of sand), where the LF data are generated from previously proposed anisotropic macro‐micro quantitative correlation. Subsequent training on sparser high‐fidelity (HF) data is used to calibrate and refine the model with HF data generated from DEM simulations for anisotropic structured sand. Feedforward neural network (FNN) is adopted as the baseline algorithm for training models. The macroscopic anisotropic parameters of structured sand predicted by the surrogate model are compared with DEM simulations to examine its feasibility and generalization ability. Furthermore, the robustness of the surrogate model is examined by discussing the effect of LF data on the performance of MR‐NN. The superiority of the MR‐NN is further verified by comparing the performance of the trained MR‐NN with the one‐shot trained FNN based on the same HF data. In this letter, a novel single parity check‐aided minimum sum (SPC‐aided MS) algorithm is proposed. A cascaded compiled code scheme is used to approximate the adaptive belief propagation (ABP) algorithm for Reed–Solomon (RS) codes using the min sum (MS) algorithm. The computational complexity is greatly reduced compared with the previous algorithm. Simulation results show that the SPC‐aided MS algorithm can achieve coding gains of up to 1.1, 0.7, and 0.6 dB for RS (255,239) code compared with the conventional ABP, LRBP, and HD‐P‐ABP algorithms, respectively under the condition of FER=10−3$\text{FER}=10^{-3}$. Perovskite CsPbX3 (X = Cl, Br, I) nanocrystals with advantages of high quantum yield, narrow emission peaks, and tunable fluorescence are considered as the next generation of light‐emitting sources. However, fluorescence degradation due to the poor stability of perovskite nanocrystals in moisture, high temperature, and illumination remains one of the greatest challenges in their further development. In this work, a fully dense coating strategy is proposed to improve the overall stability of perovskite nanocrystals, especially under high‐density laser irradiation. A mesoporous silica SiO2 layer is introduced to construct a stable coating for isolating the perovskite from external environment. To eliminate the pores of the CsPbX3@SiO2, an inorganic glass is also employed via solution‐combustion technique to generate a fully compact encapsulation for further stability promotion. The as‐prepared nanocrystal‐in‐glass composite exhibits efficient and stable fluorescence performance in luminous efficiency, chromaticity, and long‐term reliability in the conditions of thermal shock, humidity, and blue laser irradiation. With the integration of red/green/blue emitting nanocrystals, the color gamut of the white laser lighting source covers 134% of the National Television Standards Committee standard, providing exciting opportunity for high performance laser‐driven white light generation. Broadband near‐infrared (NIR) phosphors have recently received considerable attention in spectroscopy technology fields, but designing inexpensive, emission peaks centered above 800 nm, and multimodal broadband NIR luminescence material still remains a great challenge. Here, by selecting stannate compound Mg2SnO4 (MSO) as the host, a kind of broadband NIR phosphor MSO:Cr3+ with multimode luminescence properties is reported. The designed material exhibits an emission peaking at 800 nm and a full‐width at half maximum of 180 nm (≈2730 cm−1). The site occupation of Cr3+ in MSO is unraveled by density functional theory calculation. The constructed NIR light‐emitting device based on MSO:Cr3+ displays a high NIR output power of 187.19 mW@100 mA and remarkable photoelectric efficiency of 13.67%, and its multifunctional applications in information encryption, non‐destructive detection, and so on are also demonstrated. Additionally, through defect site reconstruction, MSO:Cr3+ presents superior broadband NIR persistent luminescence (PersL) properties with PersL duration time longer than 50 h. This work provides a feasible strategy to develop intelligent optical material integrated with multimodal luminescence through low‐cost stannate compounds as the host toward versatile applications such as non‐destructive detection and bioimaging. Due to the complex spatial‐temporal pathophysiology of spinal cord injury (SCI), effective modulation of SCI‐specific inflammatory pathogenesis to achieve desirable therapeutic effects on functional recovery still remains challenging. Herein, cell‐enhanced photocrosslinked silk fibroin hydrogels with extracellular matrix‐mimicking cues of mechanical properties and RGD (Arg‐Gly‐Asp) signals are gelled in situ to fill the lesion site to modulate injury‐induced neuroinflammation and promote neurite regrowth after SCI. The bionic hydrogel system provides biomimetic mechanical cues to promote neuronal differentiation of neural stem/progenitor cells (NPCs) and neurite growth by activating YAP nuclear expression. Importantly, favored by the strong capacity of silk fibroin hydrogels on macrophage/microglia recruitment, NPCs encapsulated hydrogel (NPCs@SFRGD0.1) effectively promotes recruited macrophages/microglia to M2 polarization in the lesion site by releasing S100A4 and thereby remodels the inflammatory microenvironment after SCI. Moreover, NPCs@SFRGD0.1 successfully reduces glial scar formation and accelerates corticospinal tract axon regrowth to improve locomotor recovery. Overall, this work contributes to illustrating the therapeutic mechanism of NPCs development based biomaterial therapies on modulating inflammatory microenvironment and this NPCs enhanced silk fibroin hydrogel provides a promising therapeutic strategy for SCI. We build a simple overlapping generation model to investigate the effect of life expectancy on the real exchange rate where fertility is chosen endogenously. The model reveals that, although the overall effect of life expectancy on the real exchange rate is not certain, longer life expectancy tends to cause the real exchange rate to depreciate by reducing fertility. Fertility thus serves as a mediator in the effect of life expectancy on the real exchange rate. Evidence from 148 economies (1980–2018) shows a statistically significant and robust negative relationship between life expectancy and the real exchange rate. It is estimated that a 1 year increase in life expectancy is associated with a 1.5 percent depreciation in the real exchange rate. The evidence also confirms the mediated effect of fertility. The mediated effect that fertility exerts accounts for 30 percent to 50 percent of the total effect, depending on the real exchange rate index used. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Chemical looping with O2 uncoupling aims at using an oxygen carrier (OC) with O2 uncoupling behaviour to promote fuel conversion. Natural ilmenite ores have been considered highly promising OCs for chemical looping technology; however, they do not possess any O2 uncoupling behaviour. Mn‐modified ilmenite ores as OCs are capable of O2 uncoupling, while most of them are synthesized via complicated procedures by using costly chemicals. In this study, a strategy of calcination treatment on ilmenite ores mixed with manganese ores has been established to introduce Mn into the ilmenite OCs, endowing them with O2 uncoupling behaviour in a simple and low‐cost manner. The O2 uncoupling behaviour from Mn‐modified ilmenite ores is mainly due to the newly formed (Fe1−xMnx)2O3/(Fe1−xMnx)3O4 crystal phases generated during the calcination treatment, which also alleviate the thermodynamic limit of the Mn2O3‐Mn3O4 redox pair. As a result, the Mn‐modified ilmenite ore OCs can release O2 at high temperatures when decreasing the oxygen partial pressure. But more importantly, the reduced OCs can be restored in the air isothermally. This established simple calcination treatment method can be used as a low‐cost strategy for producing ilmenite‐based OCs with O2 uncoupling behaviour. Background and Purpose: Although increasing evidence illustrated that the bidirectional communication between the brain and the gut is closely related to the occurrence of various complex diseases. Limited effort has been made to explore the influence of intestinal flora on the risk of ischaemic stroke. The present study aims to identify microbiota and specialized microbiota metabolites related to the occurrence and treatment of ischaemic stroke. Experimental Approach: The role of microbiota in the occurrence and the treatment of ischaemic stroke was evaluated on ischaemia/reperfusion (I/R), pseudo‐germ‐free and faecal transplantation animals. The target microbiota and specialized metabolites were identified by comparing their distribution in flora and metabolomic profiles in ischaemic stroke patients and animals with compared with healthy controls. The effects and mechanisms involved of the targeted metabolites in ischaemic stroke were explored in ischaemia/reperfusion rats, hypoxia/reoxygenation PC12 cells and LPS‐induced inflammatory BV2 cells. Key Results: Both ischaemic stroke patients and I/R rats had significant accumulation of branched‐chain amino acids, which were closely associated with gut microflora dysbiosis and the development of ischaemic stroke. Lactobacillus helveticus (L.hel) and Lactobacillus brevis (L.bre) are identified as the microbiota most affected by ischaemia/reperfusion modelling and treatment. L.hel and L.bre colonization exhibited significant neuroprotective activity and could greatly alleviate the accumulation of branched‐chain amino acids. In addition, branched‐chain amino acid (BCAA) accumulation was shown to exacerbate microglia‐induced neuroinflammation by activating AKT/STAT3/NF‐κB signalling. Objective: This study assessed the cross‐sectional associations of low‐carbohydrate diets (LCDs) and low‐fat diets (LFDs) with hepatic steatosis in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Methods: Diet was measured using the 24‐hour recalls. Hepatic steatosis was defined by vibration‐controlled transient elastography. The odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) were estimated using logistic regression. Substitution analysis was performed using the leave‐one‐out model. Results: Participants with higher adherence scores (comparing extreme tertiles) for an overall (OR = 0.76, 95% CI: 0.61‐0.96, ptrend = 0.049) or a healthful LCD (OR = 0.61, 95% CI: 0.43‐0.87, ptrend < 0.001) exhibited lower odds of steatosis. Replacing 5% of the energy from carbohydrates with total fat and protein (OR = 0.91, 95% CI: 0.83‐0.99) or unsaturated fat and plant protein (OR = 0.89, 95% CI: 0.84‐0.94) was associated with lower steatosis prevalence. High overall (OR = 1.65, 95% CI: 1.13‐2.40, ptrend = 0.006) or unhealthful (OR = 1.41, 95% CI: 1.10‐1.80, ptrend < 0.001) LFD scores were associated with increased likelihood of steatosis. Conclusions: These findings suggest that the associations between LCDs and LFDs and steatosis may depend on the quality and food sources of the macronutrients. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Because of special technical challenges, laparoendoscopic single‐site surgery (LESS) has been introduced into surgical practice, with surgeons required to have adequate training. The COVID‐19 pandemic has significantly affected every aspect of healthcare systems, including LESS training, which must be modified to minimize the impact of the COVID‐19 pandemic. Methods: A 3‐session training programme was designed in 2020 during the epidemic, which was modified in 2019 before the pandemic. Session 1 was an online study on LESS knowledge. Session 2 involved the trainees' self‐directed simulator‐training. Task performance was evaluated using the fundamentals of laparoscopic surgery (FLS) scoring. Session 3 was practical training, including trainers' live surgical video demonstrations and trainees' surgical video feedback after training. Video feedback performance was evaluated using the modified global rating scale (GRS). Furthermore, trainees completed a general self‐efficacy (GSE) instrument. Forty‐two gynaecology trainees were allocated into two groups: novices (n = 32) and experts (n = 10). Results: Compared with pre‐training, FLS scores improved in peg transfer (P < 0.001 and P = 0.01) and pattern cutting (P = 0.02 and P < 0.001) for novices and experts, respectively. Participants (81% versus 67%) provided first and second video feedback, respectively. Compared to the first feedback, the GRS scores of both groups improved significantly in the second feedback. All trainees showed an increase in GSE after training (P < 0.001). Communication and interaction with machines are changing our ways of life. However, developing an acoustic interface that simultaneously features waterproofness, wearability, high fidelity, and high accuracy for human–machine interaction remains a grand challenge. Herein, a waterproof acoustic sensor (WAS) as a wearable translation interface to communicate with machines is reported. Owing to the sound‐response ability of internal microparticles, the WAS holds a significantly broad frequency response range of 0.1–20 kHz, covering almost the entire human audible range. The WAS is stable against human perspiration, shows omnidirectional response, and displays an excellent frequency detection resolution of 0.0001 kHz. With a collection of compelling features, the WAS can serve as a wearable acoustic human–machine interface and a high‐fidelity auditory platform for music recording. Moreover, the WAS‐based acoustic interface holds a remarkable 98% accuracy for speech recognition with the assistance of an artificial intelligence algorithm. Finally, the WAS‐based acoustic interface demonstrates speaker verification and identification for implementation in highly secure biometric authentication systems and wireless control of an intelligent car using speech recognition. Such a WAS‐based acoustic interface represents the advancement of high‐fidelity translation platforms for human–machine interactions toward practical applications, including the Internet of Things, assistive technology, and intelligent recognition systems. Spinel configuration is a kind of broadly considered host candidate when designing persistent luminescence (PersL) materials due to the easy generation of vacancies and anti‐site defects. Here, a new strategy of defect enrichment for the activation of PersL is proposed, and in contrast to the spinel configuration, it is demonstrated that the crystal structure of near inverse spinel ensures more numerous defects to activate the near‐infrared (NIR) PersL of Fe3+. Fe3+‐doped MgGa2O4 displays the PersL band in the range of 600 to 900 nm and possesses a super‐long PersL duration time >15 h. The optical analysis and the calculation of density functional theory unravel that the near inverse spinel structure can lower the carrier transfer barriers to accelerate the formation of carrier trap states within the bandgap. Therefore, more numerous defects in this structure may participate in the trapping and de‐trapping process by comparison with the normal spinel configuration. Enhancing energy/power density of electrochemical energy storage devices is a hot topic in the present‐day science community. The electrochemical performance of these devices is strongly bound by the fundamental nature of the electrodes in terms of reaction mechanism, crystal structure, electrons/ions transfer kinetics and so on. These features are also the main challenge for the previously investigated electrodes (e. g. carbon, metal oxides/sulfides). Recently, tellurium and telluride‐based materials have aroused increasing interest in the energy storage field due to their high electronic conductivity, conducive crystal structure, and superior volumetric capacity. To provide a better understanding of the fundamental properties and energy storage performance of tellurium and telluride‐based materials, we first introduced the various physical‐chemical properties of telluride‐based materials. Then, we summarize the latest research advances in the field of energy storage with these materials, including essential physical‐chemical properties, synthetic methods, design strategies, and electrochemical performances. Unconstrained measurement of physiological signals including electrocardiograph, respiration, and temperature by sensors through incorporation into commonly used objects has sparked a notable revolution in healthcare monitoring. However, unconstrained precision epidermal pulse wave monitoring is rarely reported. Although the current flexible skin‐mounted sensors can capture pulse waves, they lack the capability to perceive tiny pulse pressure in an unconstrained manner. Herein, utilizing thin‐film materials and multilevel microstructure design, an ultrathin and flexible sensor (UFS) with the features of high flexibility, shape‐adaptability, and ultra‐broad‐range high pressure sensitivity is proposed for unconstrained precision pulse wave sensing. Given these compelling features, the UFS is mounted to the surfaces of commonly used objects and successfully detects the fingertip pulse wave even under an ultra‐broad‐range finger‐touching force. Key cardiovascular parameters are also extracted from the acquired fingertip pulse wave accurately. Furthermore, a proof‐of‐concept healthcare system, by combining the UFS and flexible devices (for example, flexible phones or E‐newspapers) is demonstrated, offering a great advancement in developing an all‐in‐one system for IoT‐based bio‐health monitoring at all times and places. Easy cancer recurrence and wound infections have been clinical challenges after surgical treatment of melanoma. Herein, a silk‐inspired in situ gelation system containing methacrylated silk fibroin (SF) and chlorine e6 for improved cancer therapy with enhanced wound healing is developed. Favored by the macrophage recruitment capacity of the SF hydrogel, promising antitumor immune responses can be turned "on" via near infrared irradiation in a controllable manner to achieve combination therapy with photodynamic therapy to significantly suppress melanoma recurrence. Moreover, the effective photodynamic antibacterial activity of this bioactive system with the capacity of light‐controllable modulating macrophage phenotype promotes remarkable tissue ingrowth with hair follicle regeneration for Staphylococcus aureus infected wound healing. Owing to the large interlayer spacing and the excellent theoretical capacity of MoSe2, it has great potential to be applied as an anode material for sodium‐ion batteries. However, the rate performance of MoSe2 is strongly limited by the insufficient intrinsic electron transfer kinetics. Herein, a simple two‐step hydrothermal method to construct MoSe2/Bi2Se3 heterostructures was developed by growing MoSe2 nanosheets onto Bi2Se3 nanoflakes directly. The typical topological insulator possesses ultrafast surface electronic conductivity, which makes the batteries exhibit a superior rate capability and considerable cycling stability. At a high rate of 10 A g−1, the MoSe2/Bi2Se3 electrode still delivered a superior capacity of 244 mA h g−1 (about 60 % of the discharge capacity at 0.1 A g−1), which is better than that in some of the previously reported MoSe2/carbon composites. It also can compare with some of the MoSe2‐containing complex sandwich architectures. Such unique rate performance is bound strongly with high interlayer spacing and rapid electron transfer kinetics. Besides, the different Fermi level energies of Bi2Se3 (work function is 5.61 eV) and MoSe2 (work function is 4.3 eV) probably induce a built‐in electric field nearby the heterofaces. Till now, many doped persistent luminescence (PersL) phosphors have been investigated and found various applications in such as bioimaging, photocatalysis and information storage, but introducing PersL emitters into a proper host is mostly complex. In this research, a self‐activated PersL phosphor Ba2Zr2Si3O12 (BZSO) is prepared by solid state reaction. By adding NH4Cl, the self‐activated PersL intensity is evidently enhanced. The trap depths and concentrations are examined by thermoluminescence spectra. Meanwhile, Bi3+ ions are introduced into BZSO and show wide band photoluminescence (PL) from 300 to 600 nm. Moreover, the PL of Bi3+ is tunable under excitation by 265‐350 nm lights. Furthermore, as a proof‐of‐concept design, we designed a patterned quick response (QR) code based on the self‐activated PersL of BZSO, and the information of "South China University of Technology (SCUT)" can be read out by the code scanning technology. Bi3+‐doped BZSO phosphors are suggested to provide potential applications in information storage by its self‐activated PersL, and to excite researchers to study the tunable PL in Bi3+‐doped phosphor. Pulse wave carries comprehensive information regarding the human cardiovascular system (CS), which is essential for directly capturing CS parameters. More importantly, cuffless blood pressure (BP) is one of the most critical markers in CS. Accurately measuring BP via the pulse wave for continuous and noninvasive diagnosis of a disease associated with hypertension remains a challenge and highly desirable. Here, a flexible weaving constructed self‐powered pressure sensor (WCSPS) is reported for measurement of the pulse wave and BP in a noninvasive manner. The WCSPS holds an ultrasensitivity of 45.7 mV Pa−1 with an ultrafast response time of less than 5 ms, and no performance degradation is observed after up to 40 000 motion cycles. Furthermore, a low power consumption sensor system is developed for precisely monitoring pulse wave from the fingertip, wrist, ear, and ankles. A practical measurement is performed with 100 people with ages spanning from 24 to 82 years and different health statuses. The discrepancy between the measured BP results using the WCSPS and that provided by the commercial cuff‐based device is about 0.87–3.65%. This work demonstrates an efficient and cost‐effective way for human health monitoring, which would be a competitive alternative to current complex cardiovascular monitoring systems. A flexible and wearable weaving constructed self‐powered pressure sensor is demonstrated for human health monitoring, which can measure and record the human pulse wave and cuffless blood pressure in a noninvasive manner. Based on the acquired pulse wave data, a user‐friendly and low power consumption sensor system is developed for continuous human health assessment with no restrictions on time and place. As worldwide landslides frequently result in enormous casualties and huge economic losses, new landslide monitoring technologies are urgently required to develop for preventing and mitigating landslide hazard. In this paper, a self‐powered, flexible, timbo‐like triboelectric force and bend sensor (TTEFBS) is proposed and implemented, with the aim of effectively monitoring landslides. The fabricated TTEFBS, based on a single‐electrode working mode, consists of a timbo‐like inner polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) core coated with a carbon electrode and an outer silicon rubber tube. Owing to the novel structure and sensing mechanism, the TTEFBS achieves high sensitivities (5.20 V N−1 under pressing and 1.61 V rad−1 under bending), fast response/relaxation time (<6 ms), and long‐term stability/reliability (more than 40 000 cycles). Furthermore, a wireless and distributed monitoring system using an array of TTEFBSs is developed for systematically detecting rockfalls, deep‐seated landslides, and superficial landslides. Additionally, a zigzag‐structured triboelectric nanogenerator (Z‐TENG), characterized by an open‐circuit voltage of ≈2058 V and a short‐circuit current of ≈154 µA, is successfully fabricated for scavenging energy from moving cars to provide power in wild environments, thereby forming a self‐powered monitoring system. This work may further inspire rapid progress of TENG in applications of wireless, distributed sensing, and environmental/infrastructure monitoring. A wireless and distributed monitoring system using an array of flexible, timbo‐like triboelectric force and bend sensors is developed for systematically detecting rockfalls, deep‐seated landslides, and superficial landslides. By combining a zigzag‐structured triboelectric nanogenerator with the sensors, a self‐powered system can be developed.
