Neuropsychological deficits and brain damage following SARS‐CoV‐2 infection are not well understood. Then, 116 patients, with either severe, moderate, or mild disease in the acute phase underwent neuropsychological and olfactory tests, as well as completed psychiatric and respiratory questionnaires at 223 ± 42 days postinfection. Additionally, a subgroup of 50 patients underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging. Patients in the severe group displayed poorer verbal episodic memory performances, and moderate patients had reduced mental flexibility. Neuroimaging revealed patterns of hypofunctional and hyperfunctional connectivities in severe patients, while only hyperconnectivity patterns were observed for moderate. The default mode, somatosensory, dorsal attention, subcortical, and cerebellar networks were implicated. Partial least squares correlations analysis confirmed specific association between memory, executive functions performances and brain functional connectivity. The severity of the infection in the acute phase is a predictor of neuropsychological performance 6–9 months following SARS‐CoV‐2 infection. Aim: To delineate the neurogenetic profiles of brain degeneration patterns in myotonic dystrophy type I (DM1). Methods: In two cohorts of DM1 patients, brain maps of volume loss (VL) and neuropsychological deficits (NDs) were intersected to large‐scale transcriptome maps provided by the Allen Human Brain Atlas (AHBA). For validation, neuropathological and RNA analyses were performed in a small series of DM1 brain samples. Results: Twofold: (1) From a list of preselected hypothesis‐driven genes, confirmatory analyses found that three genes play a major role in brain degeneration: dystrophin (DMD), alpha‐synuclein (SNCA) and the microtubule‐associated protein tau (MAPT). Neuropathological analyses confirmed a highly heterogeneous Tau‐pathology in DM1, different to the one in Alzheimer's disease. (2) Exploratory analyses revealed gene clusters enriched for key biological processes in the central nervous system, such as synaptic vesicle recycling, localization, endocytosis and exocytosis, and the serotonin and dopamine neurotransmitter pathways. RNA analyses confirmed synaptic vesicle dysfunction. Conclusions: The combination of large‐scale transcriptome interactions with brain imaging and cognitive function sheds light on the neurobiological mechanisms of brain degeneration in DM1 that might help define future therapeutic strategies and research into this condition. Aim: Preterm births (<32 weeks of gestational age) are associated with cognitive problems that are difficult to diagnose in infancy but potentially detectable at preschool age. This review aimed to evaluate the extent to which total intelligence quotient (IQ) and neuropsychological functions at ages three to five years differ between children born at <32 weeks gestational age or < 1500 g birth weight and children born at term. The secondary aim was to determine whether cognitive performance differs between extremely preterm (EPT)/extremely low birth weight (ELBW) children and very preterm (VPT) or very low birth weight (VLBW) children.Methods: PubMed and PsycINFO databases were searched for cohort studies comparing IQ and neuropsychological functions in term-born and preterm-born children born after 1994.Results: At ages three to five years, preterm-born children, compared with term-born ones, had worse IQ mean score (d = -0.77 [95% confidence interval -0.88 to -0.66]), attention, memory, visuomotor integration skill and executive functions. No differences were found between VPT/VLBW and EPT/ELBW children.Conclusion: Preterm-born children showed poorer IQ and neuropsychological functions compared with term-born subjects already at preschool age. Background and purpose A large body of research reports that stroke patients are debilitated in terms of daily independence after dismissal from the hospital unit. Patients struggle with the use of daily objects or performing complex actions. Differences between individual deficits of patients are often associated with the site of the brain damage. However, clinical studies suggest that patients exhibit varied constellations of action-associated difficulties and neuropsychological deficits. There is a lack of conclusive evidence indicating how different neuropsychological symptoms link to the impaired ability to perform activities of daily living ( ADL). Materials and methods To further address this matter, in this study we compared the behavior of patients with left brain damage ( LBD) and right brain damage ( RBD) following stroke in two naturalistic task scenarios (tea making and document filing), and compared the committed action errors to the neuropsychological screening results. Results We observed mild to severe impairments in both the LBD and RBD groups amounting to 37-55% of failure rate in attainment of action goal. Interestingly, the performance on both tasks was not correlated to each other, suggesting that the tasks involved a different set of higher cognitive functions. Despite similar behavioral manifestations, in the LBD group poor task performance was related to deficits in praxis performance and unilateral tactile and visual extinction. The presence of aphasia did not correlate with task performance, except for a link between low scores in Aachen aphasia test scales and misestimation error in the tea making task. In the RBD group, difficulties with performance were primarily linked to deficit in praxis and unilateral visual extinction. Conclusions Despite similar behavior, the underlying mechanisms of the deficits after stroke might be different (in patients with LBD and RBD) and reveal complex interlinks of cognitive networks involved in the ability to carry on everyday tasks. This prospective longitudinal study examined whether early childhood risk factors contributed to explaining and predicting intimate partner violence (IPV) in midadulthood. Participants included 202 men from the Cambridge longitudinal study who were in an intimate relationship in their mid-40s. Neuropsychological deficits and the presence of a criminogenic family environment were measured between ages 8 and 10. Antisocial behavior was measured between ages 8 and 18. IPV was measured at age 48 using a self-report instrument completed by the participants' female partners. Perpetration and victimization rates were relatively high; violence was mostly mutual, and men were more likely to be victims than perpetrators. Findings indicate that a criminogenic environment increases the risk of IPV by fostering the development of antisocial behavior and neuropsychological deficits. A link also exists between a high level of antisocial behavior during adolescence and the risk of IPV later in life. The results suggest the presence of both continuity and discontinuity of antisocial behavior as childhood risk factors that increase the likelihood of future involvement in IPV, but the role of these risk factors is modest. The degree to which depression interacts with the cognitive deficits of epilepsy to alter cognitive skill and general functioning is unknown. Depression has significant negative effects on adaptive functioning including cognitive skills. Temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) patients are known to possess cognitive dysfunction. Thus, TLE patients who are depressed may suffer a double burden of cognitive deficits. We examined whether depressed patients show increased cognitive deficits relative to nondepressed TLE patients (n = 59). We then sought to determine if this effect varied for left versus right TLE patients utilizing preoperative depression and neuropsychological data. To accurately study the lateralization of any observed effects, we selected only patients with definitive evidence of unilateral pathology and seizure focus and utilized a two-year seizure-free postsurgical outcome to capture this. The data suggested that cognitive performance was not related to depression, and that depression did not reliably mediate the cognitive presentation of either our left or right TL patients. The notion of a double burden on cognition did not receive support from our data. The data did produce the expected advantage on verbal memory measures for right TLE patients. The reasons for the limited statistical effects are discussed and issues in unraveling the causal relationships between depression, cognition, and TLE are considered. We discussed the potential role depression may play in the cognitive skills of TLE patients, but the major implication is that depression and neurocognitive performance appear to bear a limited relationship in the context of TLE. Objective: To examine differences between subtypes of children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), simple attentional difficulties and situational ADHD during an initial assessment. Method: In a single-centre study examination data of 205 children who had an initial assessment between January 1, 2002 and December 31, 2003 were retrospectively analyzed. The groups of children were compared with respect to their history features, neuromotor deficits, neuropsychological performance, and comorbid behavioural and developmental deficits by standardized test procedures and questionnaires. Results: Children with ADHD more frequently have a positive family history of attentional symptoms than non-ADHD children. There is no difference between these groups with respect to the associated behavioural problems. Children classified as ADHD show more neuromotor problems and neuropsychological deficits than children with non-ADHD attentional problems. Children with ADHD subtype hyperactive/impulsive demonstrate better neuropsychological performance than children with subtypes inattentive and combined. Children with situational home-only or school-only ADHD show no clear differences in neuromotor behaviour, comorbid problems or neuropsychological performance. Conclusions: There are clear neuropsychological differences between children who fulfil the classification criteria of The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Disease, Fourth Revision (DSM-IV) for ADHD and children who are confronted daily with attentional difficulties, but do not fulfil the criteria for ADHD. Previous studies have failed to distinguish the differential contribution of major and minor depression to cognitive impairment in patients with idiopathic Parkinson's disease (PD). This study was aimed at investigating the relationships among major depression (MD), minor depression (MiD) and neuropsychological deficits in PD. Eighty-three patients suffering from PD participated in the study. MD and MiD were diagnosed by means of a structured interview (SCID-I) based on the DSM-IV criteria, and severity of depression was evaluated by the Beck Depression Inventory. For the neuropsychological assessment, we used standardized scales that measure verbal and visual episodic memory, working memory, executive functions, abstract reasoning and visual-spatial and language abilities. MD patients performed worse than PD patients without depression on two long-term verbal episodic memory tasks, on an abstract reasoning task and on three measures of executive functioning. The MiD patients’ performances on the same tests fell between those of the other two groups of PD patients but did not show significant differences. Our results indicate that MD in PD is associated with a qualitatively specific neuropsychological profile that may be related to an alteration of prefrontal and limbic cortical areas. Moreover, the same data suggest that in these patients MiD and MD may represent a gradual continuum associated with increasing cognitive deficits. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: To examine frontotemporal white-matter integrity in patients with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) and interictal psychosis. Method: Patients with TLE and interictal psychosis (IP; n = 20) were compared with age-matched TLE patients without psychosis (NIP; n = 20). Patients had either no focal lesions or hippocampal sclerosis on conventional MRI. Complete diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) data were available in 18 IP and 20 NIP patients. A region-of-interest (ROI) approach was used to determine the DTI measures, fractional anisotropy (FA) and mean diffusivity (MD), in the middle frontal and middle temporal gyri. The relation between the DTI measures and neuropsychological tests previously identified as impaired in the IP group was examined. Results: The IP group had significantly lower FA values in both frontal and temporal regions and significantly higher MD in bilateral frontal regions. We found that performance on some neuropsychological tests was significantly related to frontotemporal FA reductions. Conclusions: Our findings suggest that subtle abnormalities in the frontotemporal white matter of patients with interictal psychosis may be undetectable on conventional MRI. Unlabelled: From the second year of life a girl showed an insidious development of clinical hypothyroidism due to a non-goitrous lymphocytic thyroiditis without traceable circulating levels of thyroid antibodies measured by routine immunoassays. The diagnostic delay of this rare variant of atrophic thyroiditis caused persistent neuropsychological deficits.Conclusion: Her difficulties with speed of processing and working memory in particular could suggest a frontal deficit, possibly in the dorsolateral prefrontal circuit. This contrasts with findings in congenital hypothyroidism, suggesting a relatively preserved frontal function, and could illustrate different neuropsychological deficits of hypothyroidism at different ages in early childhood. Background: The older alcoholic has been distinguished from the younger alcoholic with regard to both the acute effects of alcohol and also the recovery of functioning with abstinence. Few studies, however, have included samples of exclusively older subjects. In this investigation we examined the recovery of functioning in an older cohort of recovering alcoholics (age range 55-83) to determine which neuropsychological functions improve and which remain impaired with abstinence. Methods: We used a cross-sectional design, comparing three demographically matched groups on a battery of neuropsychological tests: (a) older alcoholics who had been abstinent for greater than 6 months, (b) older alcoholics who had been abstinent for less than 6 months, and (c) a control group of older subjects without alcohol abuse histories. Results: In almost all tasks, the alcoholics who were abstinent for less than 6 months performed worse than the control group. In contrast, the alcoholics who had been abstinent for more than 6 months differed from the control group on learning and recall of a word list, immediate and delayed recall of a complex figure, initial letter fluency, and clock drawing. Conclusions: Memory and executive skills appear to be resistant to recovery or at least slower to recover with abstinence in the older alcoholic. The impairment with visuospatial skills reported in prior investigations of alcoholics may be related to compromised executive functions, which interfere with the encoding of more complex visuospatial information and thus affect recall of such information. Tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) is associated with a wide range of behavioral, psychiatric, intellectual, academic, neuropsychological, and psychosocial difficulties, which are often underdiagnosed and undertreated. Here, we present a clinical update on TSC-associated neuropsychiatric disorders, abbreviated as "TAND," to guide screening, diagnosis, and treatment in practice. The review is aimed at clinical geneticists, genetic counselors, pediatricians, and all generalists involved in the assessment and treatment of children, adolescents and adults with TSC, and related disorders. The review starts with a summary of the construct and levels of TAND, before presenting up-to-date information about each level of investigation.
