The mixing of [V 10 O 28 ] 6- decavanadate anions with a dicationic gemini surfactant (gem) leads to the spontaneous self-assembly of surfactant-templated nanostructured arrays of decavanadate clusters. Calcination of the material under air yields highly crystalline, sponge-like V 2 O 5 (gem-V 2 O 5 ). In contrast, calcination of the amorphous tetrabutylammonium decavanadate allows isolation of a more agglomerated V 2 O 5 consisting of very small crystallites (TBA-V 2 O 5 ). Electrochemical analysis of the materials' performance as lithium-ion intercalation electrodes highlights the role of morphology in cathode performance. The large crystallites and long-range microstructure of the gem-V 2 O 5 cathode deliver higher initial capacity and superior capacity retention than TBA-V 2 O 5 . The smaller crystallite size and higher surface area of TBA-V 2 O 5 allow faster lithium insertion and superior rate performance to gem-V 2 O 5 ., (© 2023 The Authors. Nature has developed supramolecular constructs to deliver outstanding charge-transport capabilities using metalloporphyrin-based supramolecular arrays. Herein we incorporate simple, naturally inspired supramolecular interactions via the axial complexation of metalloporphyrins into the formation of a single-molecule wire in a nanoscale gap. Small structural changes in the axial coordinating linkers result in dramatic changes in the transport properties of the metalloporphyrin-based wire. The increased flexibility of a pyridine-4-yl-methanethiol ligand due to an extra methyl group, as compared to a more rigid 4-pyridinethiol linker, allows the pyridine-4-yl-methanethiol ligand to adopt an unexpected highly conductive stacked structure between the two junction electrodes and the metalloporphyrin ring. DFT calculations reveal a molecular junction structure composed of a shifted stack of the two pyridinic linkers and the metalloporphyrin ring. In contrast, the more rigid 4-mercaptopyridine ligand presents a more classical lifted octahedral coordination of the metalloporphyrin metal center, leading to a longer electron pathway of lower conductance. Control over polymorph formation in the crystallization of organic molecules remains a huge scientific challenge. Now, preferential formation is presented of one polymorph, formed by chiral molecules, in controlled two-dimensional (2D) nanoconfinement conditions at a liquid-solid interface. So-called nanocorrals to control concomitant polymorph formation were created in situ via a nanoshaving protocol at the interface between 1-phenyloctane and covalently modified highly-oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG). A series of symmetrically bis-4-methoxybenzyl (4MB) N-substituted 1,4-diketopyrrolo[3,4-c]pyrrole (DPP) derivatives have been synthesized. The 4MB unit makes the DPP core soluble, and shows subtle modification of up to 0.2 eV in ground and excited states of the core when compared with related alkyl derivatives. Absorption and emission spectroscopy, as well as electrochemical and computational methods have been employed to prove the importance of the peripheral aryl units on the donor/ acceptor properties of the molecules. The 4MB products are highly fluorescent (quantum yields approaching 100 % in solution), with a unique distribution of frontier states shown by spectroelectrochemistry. The solid-state fluorescence correlates with the X-ray crystal structures of the compounds, a Stokes shift of approximately 80 nm is seen for two of the compounds. Chiral thiophene-diketopyrrolopyrrole derivatives have been synthesised to investigate the potential of stereochemistry and symmetry as a means of modulating properties by influencing self-assembly of these purely organic materials. In particular, derivatives of diketopyrrolopyrrole were employed because of their proven interest as dyes, especially for organic solar cells. The natural product myrtenal was used as the source of stereochemistry, introduced through a Kröhnke reaction of a thiophene-bearing pyridinium salt and diketopyrrolopyrroles were prepared through Suzuki coupling with this chiral moiety at one end only as well as at both ends. Absorption spectroscopy and electrochemistry confirmed the potential suitability of the compounds for photovoltaic devices. The nanostructures formed by the compounds have been probed with circular dichroism spectroscopy in solution and in films. It is shown that a chiral C 2 symmetric molecule assembles in solution giving a strong circular dichroic signal while as a film this optical activity is nulled, whereas an asymmetric homologue is most optically active as a thin film. The X-ray crystal structure of the asymmetric compound shows a polar order of the molecules that might explain this observation. The lack of optical activity in solution is very likely a result of the high solubility of the compound. The results reaffirm the sensitivity of circular dichroism spectroscopy to inter-chromophore organisation, whereas absorption spectroscopy in the visible region reveals only slight changes to the bands. The differing order in the compounds also affects their performance in bulk heterojunction photovoltaic devices. Atomic force microscopy of the blended thin films with the fullerene derivative usually employed (PC 61 BM) showed that smooth and well mixed films were achieved, with the conditions required during spin coating depending greatly on the derivative, because of their differing solubility. A chiral Zn II porphyrin derivative 1 and its achiral analogue 2 were studied in the solid state. Considering the rich molecular recognition of designed metalloporphyrins 1 and 2 and their tendency to crystallize, they were recrystallized from two solvent mixtures (CH 2 Cl 2 /CH 3 OH and CH 2 Cl 2 /hexane). As a result, four different crystalline arrangements (1 a,b and 2 a,b, from 0D to 2D) were obtained. Solid-state studies were performed on all the species to analyze the role played by chirality, solvent mixtures, and surfaces (mica and HOPG) in the supramolecular arrangements. By means of combinations of solvents and substrates a variety of microsized species was obtained, from vesicles to flower-shaped arrays, including geometrical microcrystals. A methodology that can be efficiently used to synthesize, isolate, and study out-of-equilibrium crystal structures employing controlled and diffusion-limited microfluidic environments is demonstrated. An on-surface bimolecular system is described, comprising a simple divalent bis(imidazolyl) molecule that is shown to "walk" at room temperature via an inchworm mechanism along a specific pathway terminated at each end by oligomeric "fences" constructed on a monocrystalline copper surface. Scanning tunneling microscopy shows that the motion of the walker occurs along the [110] direction of the Cu surface with remarkably high selectivity and is effectively confined by the orthogonal construction of covalent porphyrin oligomers along the [001] surface direction, which serve as barriers. Density functional theory shows that the mobile molecule walks by attaching and detaching the nitrogen atoms in its imidazolyl "legs" to and from the protruding close-packed rows of the metal surface and that it can transit between two energetically equivalent extended and contracted conformations by overcoming a small energy barrier., (© 2015 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. The preparation and self-assembly of the enantiomers of a series of C3 -symmetric compounds incorporating three tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) residues is reported. The chiral citronellyl and dihydrocitronellyl alkyl chains lead to helical one dimensional stacks in solution. Molecular mechanics and dynamics simulations combined with experimental and theoretical circular dichroism support the observed helicity in solution. These stacks self-assemble to give fibres that have morphologies that depend on the nature of the chiral alkyl group and the medium in which the compounds aggregate. An inversion of macroscopic helical morphology of the citronellyl compound is observed when compared to analogous 2-methylbutyl chains, which is presumably a result of the stereogenic centre being further away from the core of the molecule. This composition still allows both morphologies to be observed, whereas an achiral compound shows no helicity. The controlled crystallization of enantiomers of an organic compound (a cyclic phosphoric acid derivative) on templated micro-patterned functionalised surfaces is demonstrated. Areas where a complementary chiral thiol has been located were effective heterogeneous nucleation centres when a solution of the compound is evaporated slowly. Various organic solvents were employed, which present a challenge with respect to other examples when water is used. The solvent and the crystallization method have an important influence on the crystal growth of these compounds. When chloroform was employed, well-defined crystals grow away from the surface, whereas crystals grow in the plane from solutions in isopropanol. In both cases, nucleation is confined to the polar patterned regions of the surface, and for isopropanol growth is largely limited within the pattern, which shows the importance of surface chemistry for nucleation and growth. The apparent dependence on the enantiomer used in the latter case could imply stereo-differentiation as a result of short-range interactions (the templating monolayer is disordered, even at the nanometre scale). The size of the pattern of chiral monolayer also determines the outcome of the crystallization; 5 μm dots are most effective. Despite the low surface tension of the samples (relative to the high surface tension of water), differential solvation of the polar and hydrophobic layers of the solvents allows crystallization in the polar regions of the monolayer, therefore the polarity of the regions in which heterogeneous nucleation takes place is indeed very important. A new chiral nonracemic thiol derived from a popular acidic resolving agent that incorporates a cyclic disubstituted phosphate group (phencyphos) has been prepared in enantiomerically pure form. The stereochemistry and absolute configuration were established by performing a single-crystal X-ray structural analysis of a synthetic intermediate. The thiol compound was used for the preparation of self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) on both monocrystalline and polycrystalline metallic gold, which have very different surface roughness. The monolayers were used to promote the nucleation and growth of crystals from nonaqueous solutions of an organic molecule (the parent phencyphos) of similar structure to the compound present in the monolayer. The template layers influence the nucleation and growth of the phencyphos crystals despite the lack of two-dimensional order in the surfaces. Heterogeneous nucleation of phencyphos takes place upon evaporation of either CHCl(3) or isopropanol solutions of the compound on the SAM surfaces, where the evaporation rate merely influences the size and homogeneity of the crystals. The roughness of the surface also plays an important role; the polycrystalline gold produces more homogeneous samples because of the greater number of nucleation sites. Clear evidence for nucleation and growth on the surfaces is shown by scanning electron microscopy. Two chiral synthetic β-dipeptides have been constructed, one with two trans-cyclobutane residues and the other with one trans and one cis fragment, 1 and 2, respectively, and investigated to get insight into the non-covalent interactions responsible for their self-assembly to form ordered aggregates, as well into parameters such as their morphology and size. Experimental evidence of the formation of these assemblies was provided by spectroscopy, microscopy and X-ray diffraction experiments that suggest the formation of nanoscale helical aggregates. This process involves a conformational change in the molecules of each dipeptide with respect to the preferred conformation of the isolated molecules in solution. A high-resolution NMR spectroscopy study allowed the determination of the dynamics of the gelation process in [D(8)]toluene and the sol-gel transition temperature, which was around 270 K in this solvent at a concentration of 15 mM. NMR spectroscopy experiments also provided some information about conformational changes involved in the sol-gel transition and also suggested a different gel packing for each dipeptide. These observations have been nicely explained by computational studies. The self-assembly of the molecules has been modelled and suggested a head-to-head molecular arrangement for 1 and a head-to-tail arrangement for 2 to give helical structures corresponding to hydrogen-bonded single chains. These chains interact with one another in an antiparallel way to afford bundles, the significant geometry parameters of which fit well to the main peaks observed in wide-angle X-ray diffraction spectra of the aggregates in the solid state., (Copyright © 2011 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Soft materials comprising low-molecular-weight organic molecules are attracting increasing interest because of their importance in the development of a number of emerging areas in nanoscience and technology, including molecular electronics, nanosystems for energy conversion, and devices in the widest sense. Their interaction with electrodes and their behavior under electric fields is a topic of vital significance for these areas, and about which very little is known. Here unprecedented evidence is presented for the controlled peeling of organic molecular material when a voltage is applied between the conducting system and the conducting probe of a scanning force microscope. The rate of removal of the material from the surface of the bulk conducting supramolecular material can be tuned. It depends on the potential applied and is initiated only above a threshold value of 200 mV. The results indicate the importance of electric fields on the stability and performance of conducting organic systems at the nanoscale.

A new series of secondary amides bearing long alkyl chains with pi-electron-donor cores has been synthesized and characterised, and their self-assembly upon casting at surfaces has been studied. The different supramolecular assemblies of the materials have been visualized by using atomic force microscopy (AFM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). It is possible to obtain well-defined fibres of these aromatic core molecules as a result of the hydrogen bonds between the amide groups. Indeed, by altering the alkyl-chain lengths, constitutions, concentrations and solvent, it is possible to form different rodlike aggregates on graphite. Aggregate sizes with a lower limit of 6-8 nm width have been reached for different amide derivatives, while others show larger aggregates with rodlike morphologies which are several micrometers in length. For one compound that forms nanofibres, doping was performed by using a chemical oxidant, and the resulting layer on graphite was shown to exhibit metallic-like spectroscopy curves when probed with current-sensing AFM. This technique also revealed current maps of the surface of the molecular material. Fibre formation not only takes place on the graphite surface: nanometre scale rods have been imaged by using TEM on a grid after evaporation of solutions of the compounds in chloroform. Molecular modelling proves the importance of the hydrogen bonds in the generation of the fibres, and indicates that the constitution of the molecules is vital for the formation of the desired columnar stacks, results that are consistent with the images obtained by microscopic techniques. The results show the power of noncovalent bonds in self-assembly processes that can lead to electrically conducting nanoscale supramolecular wires.

Enantiomorphous monolayers of enantiopure formamides form on a graphite surface, while the racemic compound does not undergo a spontaneous resolution under similar conditions. This difference in the two-dimensional behavior has been studied by scanning tunneling microscopy (see image of the racemate adsorbed on graphite).
