Abstract Despite the continued scaling down of semiconductor manufacturing, traditional lithography‐based nanofabrication only produces thin film structures, not 3‐D shapes. 3‐D nanofabrication remains a major challenge, especially for semiconductor materials. Most 3‐D nanofabrication techniques, such as two‐photon printing and stereolithography, mostly work for polymer materials, not solid‐state semiconductor materials. Here, a method capable of fabricating sophisticated 3‐D nanostructures of silicon based on the subsurface swelling phenomenon using focused helium ion swelling is reported. Silicon nanosphere arrays, hierarchical nanospheres mimicking compound lenses, nano‐Taichi symbols, three‐layer nanotowers, and nanopumpkins have been demonstrated, which are challenging for existing nanofabrication technology. The produced silicon nanostructures exhibit super small surface roughness as small as 0.1 nm, two orders of magnitude better than existing 3‐D nanofabrication technologies normally above 10 nm. The super small surface roughness opens doors for many exciting applications in photonics, indicating small photon losses. Moreover, it is demonstrated ultraprecise fine‐tuning of critical dimensions of ready‐made nanostructures or nanodevices, such as tuning the tilting angle of the tip on the atomic force microscopy probe and reducing the nanogap between two metal electrodes from 200 to 4 nm, which is promising for improving nanodevice performances by tuning the critical dimensions to desired ranges.

Current skin sensors or wound dressings fall short in addressing the complexities and challenges encountered in real-world scenarios, lacking adequate capability to facilitate wound repair. The advancement of methodologies enabling early diagnosis, real-time monitoring, and active regulation of drug delivery for timely comprehensive treatment holds paramount significance for complex chronic wounds. In this study, a nanocomposite hydrogel is devised for real-time monitoring of wound condition and comprehensive treatment. Tannins and siRNA containing matrix metalloproteinase-9 gene siRNA interference are self-assembled to construct a degradable nanogel and modified with bovine serum albumin. The nanogel and pH indicator are encapsulated within a dual-crosslinking hydrogel synthesized with norbornene dianhydride-modified paramylon. The hydrogel exhibited excellent shape adaptability due to borate bonding, and the click polymerization reaction led to rapid in situ curing of the hydrogel. The system not only monitors pH, temperature, wound exudate alterations, and peristalsis during wound healing but also exhibits hemostatic, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties, modulates macrophage polarization, and facilitates vascular tissue regeneration. This therapeutic approach, which integrates the monitoring of pathological parameters with comprehensive treatment, is anticipated to address the clinical issues and challenges associated with chronic diabetic wounds and infected wounds, offering broad prospects for application., (© 2024 The Author(s). Surface-driven capacitive storage enhances rate performance and cyclability, thereby improving the efficacy of high-power electrode materials and fast-charging batteries. Conventional defect engineering, widely-employed capacitive storage optimization strategy, primarily focuses on the influence of defects themselves on capacitive behaviors. However, the role of local environment surrounding defects, which significantly affects surface properties, remains largely unexplored for lack of suitable material platform and has long been neglected. As proof-of-concept, typical Ti 3 C 2 T x MXenes are chosen as model materials owing to metallic conductivity and tunable surface properties, satisfying the requirements for capacitive-type electrodes. Using density functional theory (DFT) calculations, the potential of MXenes with modulated local atomic environment is anticipated and introducing new carbon sites found near pores can activate electrochemically inert surface, attaining record theoretical potassium storage capacities of MXenes (291 mAh g -1 ). This supposition is realized through atomic tailoring via chemical scissor within sublayers, exposing new sp 3 -hybridized carbon active sites. The resulting MXenes demonstrate unprecedented rate performance and cycling stability. Notably, MXenes with higher carbon exposure exhibit a record-breaking capacity over 200 mAh g -1 and sustain a capacity retention higher than 80% after 20 months. Sunlight has long served as primary energy source on our planet, shaping the behavior of living organisms. Extensive research has been dedicated to unraveling the evolutionary pathways involved. When the formation of Earth atmosphere, it primarily consisted of small gas molecules, which are considered crucial for the emergence of life. Recent demonstrations have shown that these molecules can also be transformed into semiconductors, with the potential to harness solar energy and catalyze chemical reactions as photocatalysts. Building upon this research, this minireview focuses on the potential revolutionary impact of photocatalysis on Earth. Initially, it examines key reactions, such as the formation of prebiotic molecules and the oxygen evolution reaction via water oxidation. Additionally, various C-N complexes in photocatalysts are explored, showcasing their roles in catalyzing chemical reactions. Conventional herbicide formulations suffer from serious problems such as easy drift, run-off and scouring into the environment, which pose enormous threats to human health and environmental safety. Herein, an innovative strategy is proposed to prepare oil-in-water nanoemulsions with long-term stability, enhanced droplet deposition, and improved nanoherbicide adhesion via steerable interfacial assembly of 1D amyloid-like protein nanocomposites. Bovine serum albumin (BSA) undergoes rapid amyloid-like aggregation upon reduction of its disulfide bond. The resulting phase-transitioned BSA (PTB) oligomers instantly self-assemble on the surface of cellulose nanofibers (CNF) to form the 1D PTB/CNF nanocomposites, which greatly expands the parameter space for interfacial assembly of amyloid-like proteins. The PTB/CNF nanocomposites exhibit excellent interfacial activity, enabling spontaneous adsorption at the oil-water interface to stabilize nanoemulsion. The excess PTB/CNF nanocomposites would also self-assemble at the air-aqueous interface upon spraying, resulting in efficient droplet deposition on (super)hydrophobic leaves. The deposited nanoherbicides show excellent resistance to wind/rain corrosion due to the robust amyloid-mediated adhesion, with a retention rate of more than 80% after severe scouring. Consequently, herbicide applications can be reduced by at least 30% compared to commercial emulsifiable concentrates, showing greater herbicidal efficiency. To investigate how cell elongation impacts extracellular electron transfer (EET) of electroactive microorganisms (EAMs), the division of model EAM Shewanella oneidensis (S. oneidensis) MR-1 is engineered by reducing the formation of cell divisome. Specially, by blocking the translation of division proteins via anti-sense RNAs or expressing division inhibitors, the cellular length and output power density are all increased. Electrophysiological and transcriptomic results synergistically reveal that the programmed cell elongation reinforces EET by enhancing NADH oxidation, inner-membrane quinone pool, and abundance of c-type cytochromes. Moreover, cell elongation enhances hydrophobicity due to decreased cell-surface polysaccharide, thus facilitates the initial surface adhesion stage during biofilm formation. The output current and power density all increase in positive correction with cellular length. However, inhibition of cell division reduces cell growth, which is then restored by quorum sensing-based dynamic regulation of cell growth and elongation phases. The QS-regulated elongated strain thus enables a cell length of 143.6 ± 40.3 µm (72.6-fold of that of S. oneidensis MR-1), which results in an output power density of 248.0 ± 10.6 mW m -2 (3.41-fold of that of S. oneidensis MR-1) and exhibits superior potential for pollutant treatment. Bacterial infections can pose significant health risks as they have the potential to cause a range of illnesses. These infections can spread rapidly and lead to complications if not promptly diagnosed and treated. Therefore, it is of great significance to develop a probe to selectively target and image pathogenic bacteria while simultaneously killing them, as there are currently no effective clinical solutions available. This study presents a novel approach using near-infrared carbonized polymer dots (NIR-CPDs) for simultaneous in vivo imaging and treatment of bacterial infections. The core-shell structure of the NIR-CPDs facilitates their incorporation into bacterial cell membranes, leading to an increase in fluorescence brightness and photostability. Significantly, the NIR-CPDs exhibit selective bacterial-targeting properties, specifically identifying Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) while sparing Escherichia coli (E. coli). Moreover, under 808 nm laser irradiation, the NIR-CPDs exhibit potent photodynamic effects by generating reactive oxygen species that target and damage bacterial membranes. In vivo experiments on infected mouse models demonstrate not only precise imaging capabilities but also significant therapeutic efficacy, with marked improvements in wound healing. Thermosets are well known for their advantages such as high stability and chemical resistance. However, developing sustainable thermosets with degradability and recyclability faces several principal challenges, including reconciling the desired characteristics during service with the recycling and reprocessing properties required at the end of life, establishing efficient methods for large-scale synthesis, and aligning with current manufacturing process. Here a general strategy is presented for the on-demand degradation and recycling of thermosets under mild conditions utilizing dynamic precursors with dual-factor-controlled reversibility. Specifically, dynamic triazine crosslinkers are introduced through dynamic nucleophilic aromatic substitution (S N Ar) into the precursor polyols used in polyurethane (PU) synthesis. Upon removal of the catalyst and alcohol, the reversibility of S N Ar is deactivated, allowing for the use of standard PU polymerization techniques such as injection molding, casting, and foaming. The resulting cyanurate-crosslinked PUs maintain high stability and diverse mechanical properties of traditional crosslinked PUs, yet offer the advantage of easy on-demand depolymerization for recycling by activating the reversibility of S N Ar under specific but mild conditions-a combination of base, alcohol, and mild heat. Although Ru-based materials are among the outstanding catalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), the instability issue still haunts them and impedes the widespread application. The instability of Ru-based OER catalysts is generally ascribed to the formation of soluble species through the over-oxidation of Ru and structural decomposition caused by involvement of lattice oxygen. Herein, an effective strategy of selectively activating the lattice oxygen around Ru site is proposed to improve the OER activity and stability. Our synthesized spinel-type electrocatalyst of Ru and Zn co-doped Co 3 O 4 showed an ultralow overpotential of 172 mV at 10 mA cm -2 and a long-term stability reaching to 100 hours at 10 mA cm -2 for alkaline OER. The experimental results and theoretical simulations demonstrated that the lattice oxygen site jointly connected with the octahedral Ru and tetrahedral Zn atoms became more active than other oxygen sites near Ru atom, which further lowered the reaction energy barriers and avoided generating excessive oxygen vacancies to enhance the structural stability of Ru sites. Electrocatalytic conversion of CO 2 into formate is recognized an economically-viable route to upgrade CO 2 , but requires high overpotential to realize the high selectivity owing to high energy barrier for driving the involved proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) processes and serious ignorance of the second PCET. Herein, we surmount the challenge through sequential regulation of the potential-determining step (PDS) over Te-doped Bi (TeBi) nanotips. Computational studies unravel the incorporation of Te heteroatoms alters the PDS from the first PCET to the second one by substantially lowering the formation barrier for *OCHO intermediate, and the high-curvature nanotips induce enhanced electric field that can steer the formation of asymmetric *HCOOH. In this scenario, the thermodynamic barrier for *OCHO and *HCOOH can be sequentially decreased, thus enabling a high formate selectivity at low overpotential. Experimentally, distinct TeBi nanostructures are obtained via controlling Te content in the precursor and TeBi nanotips achieve >90 % of Faradaic efficiency for formate production over a comparatively positive potential window (-0.57 V to -1.08 V). The strong Bi-Te covalent bonds also afford a robust stability. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are considered as a promising candidate for advancing energy storage owing to their intrinsic multi-channel architecture, high theoretical capacity, and precise adjustability. However, the low conductivity and poor structural stability lead to unsatisfactory rate and cycling performance, greatly hindering their practical application. Herein, we propose a sea urchin-like Co-ZIF-L superstructure using molecular template to induce self-assembly followed by ion exchange method, which shows improved conductivity, successive channels, and high stability. The ion exchange can gradually etch the superstructure, leading to the reconstruction of Co-ZIF-L with three-dimensional (3D) cross-linked ultrathin porous nanosheets. Moreover, the precise control of Co to Ni ratios can construct effective micro-electric field and synergistically enhance the rapid transfer of electrons and electrolyte ions, improving the conductivity and stability of CoNi-ZIF-L. The Co 6.53 Ni-ZIF-L electrode exhibits a high specific capacity (602 F g -1 at 1 A g -1 ) and long cycling stability (95.3 % retention after 4,000 cycles at 5 A g -1 ). The Co 6.53 Ni-ZIF-L//AC asymmetric flexible supercapacitor employing gel electrolyte also exhibits excellent cycling stability (93.3 % retention after 4000 cycles at 5 A g -1 ). Given the limited specificity and accuracy observed in the current official colorimetric quantification of polysaccharide in Lycium barbarum, our study aims to establish a novel, specific, accurate, and economic pre-column derivatization ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography (UHPLC) method for determining the monosaccharide and polysaccharide content in L. barbarum. The optimization of extraction, hydrolysis, and derivatization (using 1-phenyl-3-methyl-5-pyrazolone) processes for polysaccharide from L. barbarum was conducted initially, followed by separation of nine monosaccharides within 20 min using UHPLC with a C18 column. Subsequently, a novel method known as quantitative analysis of multiple components by single marker was developed, utilizing either additive 2-deoxy-D-ribose or any monosaccharide present in the sample as a single reference standard to simultaneously detect the contents of polysaccharide and nine monosaccharides in L. barbarum. To validate the accuracy of the established method, the quantitative results of our approach were compared to both external and internal standard method methods. The minimal relative errors in the quantitative determination of monosaccharides among the three methods confirmed the dependability of the method. By analyzing 20 batches of L. barbarum samples, D-galacturonic acid exhibited the highest content and the polysaccharide levels ranged from 3.02 to 13.04 mg/g. Intervertebral disc (IVD) herniation is a prevalent spinal disorder, often necessitating surgical intervention such as microdiscectomy for symptomatic relief and nerve decompression. IVDs comprise a gel-like nucleus pulposus (NP) encased by an annulus fibrosus (AF), and their avascular nature renders them immune-privileged. Microdiscectomy exposes the residual NP to the immune system, precipitating an immune cell infiltration and attack that exacerbates IVD degeneration. While many efforts in the tissue engineering field are directed toward IVD regeneration, the inherently limited regenerative capacity due to the avascular and low-cellularity nature of the disc and the challenging mechanical environment of the spine often impedes success. This study, aiming to prevent IVD degeneration post-microdiscectomy, utilizes mucin-derived gels (Muc-gels) that form a gel at the surgical site, inspired by the natural mucin coating on living organisms to evade immune reorganization. It is shown that type I macrophages are present in severely degenerated human discs. Encapsulating IVDs within Muc-gels prevents fibrous encapsulation and macrophage infiltration in a mouse subcutaneous model. The injection of Muc-gels prevents IVD degeneration in a rat tail IVD degeneration model up to 24 weeks post-operation. Investigating the formation and transformation mechanisms of spiral-concave crystals holds significant potential for advancing innovative material design and comprehension. We examined the kinetics-controlled nucleation and growth mechanisms of Prussian Blue crystals with spiral concave structures, and constructed a detailed crystal growth phase diagram. The spiral-concave hexacyanoferrate (SC-HCF) crystals, characterized by high-density surface steps and a low stress-strain architecture, exhibit enhanced activity due to their facile interaction with reactants. Notably, the coordination environment of SC-HCF can be precisely modulated by the introduction of diverse metals. Utilizing X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy and in-situ ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, we elucidated the formation mechanism of SC-HCF to Co-HCF facilitated by oriented adsorption-ion exchange (OA-IE) process. Both experimental data, and density functional theory confirm that Co-HCF possesses an optimized energy band structure, capable of adjusting the local electronic environment and enhancing the performance of the oxygen evolution reaction. Radiative cooling technology, which is renowned for its ability to dissipate heat without energy consumption, has garnered immense interest. However, achieving high performance, multifunctionality, and smart integration while addressing challenges such as film thickness and enhancing anisotropic light reflection remains challenging. In this study, a core-shell composite nanofiber, PVDF@PEI, is introduced and designed primarily from a symmetry-breaking perspective to develop highly efficient radiative cooling materials. Using a combination of solvent-induced phase separation (EIPS) inverse spinning and (aggregation) self-assembly methods (EISA or EIAA) and coaxial electrostatic spinning (ES), superconformal surface anisotropic porous nanofiber membranes are fabricated. These membranes exhibit exceptional thermal stability (up to 210 °C), high hydrophobicity (contact angle of 126°), robust UV protection (exceeding 99%), a fluorescence multiplication effect (with a 0.6% increase in fluorescence quantum efficiency), and good breathability. These properties enable the material to excel in a wide range of application scenarios. Moreover, this material achieved a remarkable daytime cooling temperature of 8 °C. Designing solid electrolyte is deemed as an effective approach to suppress the side reaction of zinc anode and active material dissolution of cathodes in liquid electrolytes for zinc metal batteries (ZMBs). Herein, kaolin is comprehensively investigated as raw material to prepare solid electrolyte (KL-Zn) for ZMBs. As demonstrated, KL-Zn electrolyte is an excellent electronic insulator and zinc ionic conductor, which presents wide voltage window of 2.73 V, high ionic conductivity of 5.08 mS cm-1, and high Zn2+ transference number of 0.79. For the Zn//Zn cells, superior cyclic stability lasting for 2200 h can be achieved at 0.2 mA cm-2. For the Zn//NH4V4O10 batteries, stable capacity of 245.8 mAh g-1 can be maintained at 0.2 A g-1 after 200 cycles along with high retention ratio of 81%, manifesting KL-Zn electrolyte contributes to stabilize the crystal structure of NH4V4O10 cathode. These satisfying performances can be attributed to the enlarged interlayer spacing, zinc (de)solvation-free mechanism and fast diffusion kinetics of KL-Zn electrolyte, availably guaranteeing uniform zinc deposition for zinc anode and reversible zinc (de)intercalation for NH4V4O10 cathode. Additionally, this work also verifies the application possibility of KL-Zn electrolyte for Zn//MnO2 batteries and Zn//I2 batteries, suggesting the universality of mineral-based solid electrolyte., (© 2024 Wiley‐VCH GmbH.)

Bioinspired molecular engineering strategies have emerged as powerful tools that significantly enhance the development of novel therapeutics, improving efficacy, specificity, and safety in disease treatment. Recent advancements have focused on identifying and utilizing disease-associated biomarkers to optimize drug activity and address challenges inherent in traditional therapeutics, such as frequent drug administrations, poor patient adherence, and increased risk of adverse effects. In this review, we provide a comprehensive overview of the latest developments in bioinspired artificial systems (BAS) that use molecular engineering to tailor therapeutic responses to drugs in the presence of disease-specific biomarkers. We examine the transition from open-loop systems, which rely on external cues, to closed-loop feedback systems capable of autonomous self-regulation in response to disease-associated biomarkers. We detail various BAS modalities designed to achieve biomarker-driven therapy, including activatable prodrug molecules, smart drug delivery platforms, autonomous artificial cells, and synthetic receptor-based cell therapies, elucidating their operational principles and practical in vivo applications. Finally, we discuss the current challenges and future perspectives in the advancement of BAS-enabled technology and envision that ongoing advancements toward more programmable and customizable BAS-based therapeutics will significantly enhance precision medicine., (© 2024 Wiley-VCH GmbH.)

The extensive industrial applications of fuel oil, a critical strategic resource, are accompanied by significant environmental and health concerns due to the presence of sulfur-containing compounds in its composition, which result in hazardous combustion waste. Extensive research has been conducted to develop technologies for low-vulcanization fuel production to address this issue. Consequently, the investigation of catalysts for environmentally friendly and safe photocatalytic desulfurization becomes imperative. To that end, we have designed efficient MIL-101(Fe)/CQDs@g-C 3 N 4 (MIL101/CDs-C 3 N 4 ) Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalysts with high carrier separation and mobility through a thermal polymerization-hydrothermal strategy. The high concentration of photogenerated carriers facilitates the activation of oxygen and H 2 O 2 , leading to increased production of ROS (⋅O 2 , ⋅OH, h - , ⋅OH, h + ), thereby enhancing the photocatalytic desulfurization (PODS). Additionally, DFT (Density functional theory) calculations were utilized to determine the electron migration pathways of the catalysts and adsorption energies of DBT (dibenzothiophene). Moreover, Gibbs free energy calculations indicated that MIL101/CDs-C 3 exhibited the lowest activation energy for oxygen and H 4 exhibited the lowest activation energy for oxygen and H 2 O 2 . The mechanism of photocatalytic desulfurization was proposed through a combination of theoretical calculations and experimental studies. Interfacial electron transfer between electroactive microorganisms (EAMs) and electrodes underlies a wide range of bio-electrochemical systems with diverse applications. However, the electron transfer rate at the biotic-electrode interface remains low due to high transmembrane and cell-electrode interfacial electron transfer resistance. Herein, a modular engineering strategy is adopted to construct a Shewanella oneidensis-carbon felt biohybrid electrode decorated with bacterial cellulose aerogel-electropolymerized anthraquinone to boost cell-electrode interfacial electron transfer. First, a heterologous riboflavin synthesis and secretion pathway is constructed to increase flavin-mediated transmembrane electron transfer. Second, outer membrane c-Cyts OmcF is screened and optimized via protein engineering strategy to accelerate contacted-based transmembrane electron transfer. Third, a S. oneidensis-carbon felt biohybrid electrode decorated with bacterial cellulose aerogel and electropolymerized anthraquinone is constructed to boost the interfacial electron transfer. As a result, the internal resistance decreased to 42 Ω, 480.8-fold lower than that of the wild-type (WT) S. oneidensis MR-1. The maximum power density reached 4286.6 ± 202.1 mW m -2 , 72.8-fold higher than that of WT. Lastly, the engineered biohybrid electrode exhibited superior abilities for bioelectricity harvest, Cr 6+ reduction, and CO 2 reduction. Liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs) exhibit unique mechanical properties of soft elasticity and reversible shape-changing behaviors, and so serve as potentially transformative materials for various protective and actuation applications. This study contributes to filling a critical knowledge gap in the field by investigating the microscale mesogen organization of nematic LCEs with diverse macroscopic deformation. A polarized Fourier transform infrared light spectroscopy (FTIR) tester is utilized to examine the mesogen organizations, including both the nematic director and mesogen order parameter. Three types of material deformation are analyzed: uniaxial tension, simple shear, and bi-axial tension, which are all commonly encountered in practical designs of LCEs. By integrating customized loading fixtures into the FTIR tester, mesogen organizations are examined across varying magnitudes of strain levels for each deformation mode. Their relationships with macroscopic stress responses are revealed and compared with predictions from existing theories. Furthermore, this study reveals unique features of mesogen organizations that have not been previously reported, such as simultaneous evolutions of the mesogen order parameter and nematic director in simple shear and bi-axial loading conditions. The design of three-dimensional covalent organic frameworks (3D COFs) using linear and trigonal linkers remains challenging due to the difficulty in achieving a specific non-planar spatial arrangement with low-connectivity building units. Here, we report the novel 3D COFs with linear and trigonal linkers, termed TMB-COFs, exhibiting srs topology. The steric hindrance provides an additional force to alter the torsion angles of peripheral triangular units, guiding the linear unit to connect with the trigonal unit into 3D srs frameworks, rather than the more commonly observed two-dimensional (2D) hcb structures. Furthermore, we comprehensively examined the hydrogen peroxide photocatalytic production capacity of the TMB-COFs in comparison with analogous 2D COFs. The experimental results and DFT calculations demonstrate a significant enhancement in photocatalytic hydrogen peroxide production efficacy through framework regulation. Deep-ultraviolet (UV) birefringent materials are urgently needed to facilitate light polarization in deep-UV lithography. Maximizing anisotropy by regulating the alignment of functional modules is essential for improving the linear optical performance of birefringent materials. In this work, we proposed a strategy to design deep-UV birefringent materials that achieve functional module ordering via weak interactions. Following this strategy, four compounds CN4H7SO3CF3, CN4H7SO3CH3, C(NH2)3SO3CH3, and C(NH2)3SO3CF3 were identified as high-performance candidates for deep-UV birefringent materials. The millimeter-sized crystals of CN4H7SO3CF3, CN4H7SO3CH3, and C(NH2)3SO3CH3 were grown, and the transmittance spectra show that their cutoff edges are below 200 nm. CN4H7SO3CF3 exhibits the largest birefringence (0.149 @ 546 nm, 0.395 @ 200 nm) in the deep-UV region among reported sulfates and sulfate derivatives. It reveals that the hydrogen bond can modulate the module ordering of the heteroleptic tetrahedra and planar π-conjugated cations, thus greatly enhancing the birefringence. Exploring new carbon-based electrode materials is quite necessary for enhancing capacitive deionization (CDI). Here, hollow mesoporous carbon spheres (HMCSs)/metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) derived carbon materials (NC(M)/HMCSs and NC(M)@HMCSs) are successfully prepared by interface-coating and space-encapsulating design, respectively. The obtained NC(M)/HMCSs and NC(M)@HMCSs possess a hierarchical hollow nanoarchitecture with abundant nitrogen doping, high specific surface area, and abundant meso-/microporous pores. These merits are conducive to rapid ion diffusion and charge transfer during the adsorption process. Compared to NC(M)/HMCSs, NC(M)@HMCSs exhibit superior electrochemical performance due to their better utilization of the internal space of hollow carbon, forming an interconnected 3D framework. In addition, the introduction of Ni ions is more conducive to the synergistic effect between ZIF(M)-derived carbon and N-doped carbon shell compared with other ions (Mn, Co, Cu ions). The resultant Ni-1-800-based CDI device exhibits excellent salt adsorption capacity (SAC, 37.82 mg g -1 ) and good recyclability. Liquid manipulation using tubular actuators finds diverse applications ranging from microfluidics, printing, liquid transfer to micro-reactors. Achieving flexible and simple regulation of manipulated liquid droplets during transport is crucial for the tubular liquid actuators to perform complex and multiple functions, yet it remains challenging. Here, a facile tubular actuator for directional transport of various liquid droplets under the control of an externally applied magnetic field is presented. The surfaces of the actuator can be engineered with submillimeter-sized through-hole pores, which enables the liquid droplet to be easily modulated in the transport process. Furthermore, the liquid actuator with featured through-hole pores is expanded to function as a switch in an integrated external electric circuit by magnetically controlling the motion of a conductive liquid droplet. This work develops a strategy for regulating liquid droplets in the tubular actuation systems, which may inspire ideas for designing functional liquid actuators with potential applications in microfluidics, microchemical reaction, liquid switch, and liquid robotics., (© 2024 The Author(s). Electrooxidation of biomass-derived glycerol which is regarded as a main byproduct of industrial biodiesel production, is an innovative strategy to produce value-added chemicals, but currently showcases slow kinetics, limited Faraday efficiency, and unclear catalytic mechanism. Herein, we report high-efficiency electrooxidation of glycerol into formate via a Cu doped NiCo alloy catalyst supported on nickel foam (Cu-NiCo/NF) in a coupled system paired with nitrate reduction. The designed Cu-NiCo/NF delivers only 1.23 V vs. RHE at 10 mA cm-2, and a record Faraday efficiency of formate of 93.8%. The superior performance is ascribed to the rapid generation of NiIII-OOH and CoIII-OOH and favorable coupling of surface *O with reactive intermediates. Using Cu-NiCo/NF as a bifunctional catalyst, the coupled system synchronously produces NH3 and formate, showing 290 mV lower than the coupling of hydrogen evolution reaction, together with excellent long-term stability for up to 144 h. Expanding the diversity of multi-macrocyclic nanocarbons, particularly those with all-benzene scaffolds, represents intriguing yet challenging synthetic tasks. Complementary to the existing synthetic approaches, here we report an efficient and modular post-functionalization strategy that employs iridium-catalyzed C-H borylation of the highly strained meta-cycloparaphenylenes (mCPPs) and an mCPP-derived catenane. The poor implant-osseointegration under diabetic condition remains a challenge to be addressed urgently. Studies have confirmed that the diabetic pathological microenvironment is accompanied by excessive oxidative stress, imbalanced immune homeostasis, and persistent chronic inflammation, which seriously impairs the osteogenic process. Herein, a multifunctional bioactive interface with both anti-oxidative stress and immunomodulatory properties is constructed on titanium implants. Briefly, manganese dioxide nanosheets are coated onto mesoporous polydopamine nanoparticles loaded with carbon monoxide gas precursor, namely MnO 2 -CO@MPDA NPs, and then they are integrated on the titanium implant to obtain MCM-Ti. In the simulated diabetic microenvironment, under the action of MnO 2 nanoenzymes, MCM-Ti can effectively eliminate intracellular reactive oxygen species while alleviating hypoxic state. Interestingly, the microenvironment mediates the responsive release of CO gas, which effectively drives macrophages toward M2 polarization, thereby ameliorating inflammatory response. The potential mechanism is that CO gas up-regulates the expression of heme oxygenase-1, further activating the Notch/Hes1/Stat3 signaling pathway. Furthermore, the conditioned medium derived from macrophages on MCM-Ti surface significantly enhances the osteogenic differentiation of BMSCs. The exploration of nontoxic Sn-based perovskites as a viable alternative to their toxic Pb-based counterparts has garnered increased attention. However, the power conversion efficiency of Sn-based perovskite solar cells lags significantly behind their Pb-based counterparts. This study presents a ternary passivation strategy aimed at enhancing device performance, employing [6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric-acid-methyl-ester (PCBM), poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT), and indene C60 bisadduct (ICBA). These components play crucial roles in managing energy levels and enhancing carrier transportation, respectively. The results reveal that the introduction of the ternary system leads to improvements in carrier collection and transportation, accompanied by a suppression of the recombination process. Ultimately, the champion device achieves a remarkable performance with an efficiency of 14.64%. Conductive hydrogels, characterized by their unique features of flexibility, biocompatibility, electrical conductivity, and responsiveness to environmental stimuli, have emerged as promising materials for sensitive strain sensors. In this study, a facile strategy to prepare highly conductive hydrogels is reported. Through rational structural and synthetic design, silver nanowires (AgNWs) are incorporated into poly(N-acryloyl glycinamide) (PNAGA) hydrogels, achieving high electrical conductivity (up to 0.88 S m -1 ), significantly enhanced mechanical properties, and elevated deformative sensitivity. Furthermore, surface modification with polyhexafluoropropylene oxide (PHFPO) has substantially improved the water retention capacity and dressing comfort of this hydrogel material. Based on the above merits, these hydrogels are employed to fabricate highly sensitive wearable strain sensors which can detect and interpret subtle hand and finger movements and enable precise control of machine interfaces. The AgNWs/PNAGA based strain sensors can effectively sense finger motion, enabling the control of robotic fingers to replicate the human hand's gestures. In addition, the high deformative sensitivity and elevated water retention performance of the hydrogels makes them suitable for flow sensing. Manipulating the crystal orientation plays a crucial role in the conversion efficiency during second harmonic generation (SHG). Here, we provide a new strategy in controlling the surface-dependent anisotropic SHG with the precise design of (101) and (2 1 ‾ ${\bar 1}$ 0) MAGeI 3 facets. Based on the SHG measurement, the (101) MAGeI 3 single crystal exhibits larger SHG (1.3×(2 1 ‾ ${\bar 1}$ 0) MAGeI 3 ). Kelvin probe force microscopy imaging shows a smaller work function for the (101) MAGeI 3 compared with the (2 1 ‾ ${\bar 1}$ 0), which indirectly demonstrates the stronger intrinsic polarization on the (101) surface. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy confirms the band bending within the (101) facet. Temperature-dependent steady-state and time-resolved photoluminescence spectroscopy show shorter lifetime and wider emission band in the (101) MAGeI 3 single crystal, revealing the higher defect states. Additionally, powder X-ray diffraction patterns show the (101) MAGeI 3 possesses larger in-plane polar units [GeI 3 ] - density, which could directly enhance the spontaneous polarization in the (101) facet. Density functional theory (DFT) calculation further demonstrates the higher intrinsic polarization in the (101) facet compared with the (2 1 ‾ ${\bar 1}$ 0) facet, and the larger built-in electric field in the (101) facet facilitates surface vacancy defect accumulation. Patients with glycogen storage disease type Ib (GSD-Ib) frequently have inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). however, the underlying etiology remains unclear. Herein, this study finds that digestive symptoms are commonly observed in patients with GSD-Ib, presenting as single or multiple scattered deep round ulcers, inflammatory pseudo-polyps, obstructions, and strictures, which differ substantially from those in typical IBD. Distinct microbiota profiling and single-cell clustering of colonic mucosae in patients with GSD are conducted. Heterogeneous oral pathogenic enteric outgrowth induced by GSD is a potent inducer of gut microbiota immaturity and colonic macrophage accumulation. Specifically, a unique population of macrophages with high CCL4L2 expression is identified in response to pathogenic bacteria in the intestine. Hyper-activation of the CCL4L2-VSIR axis leads to increased expression of AGR2 and ZG16 in epithelial cells, which mediates the unique progression of IBD in GSD-Ib. Collectively, the microbiota-driven pathomechanism of IBD is demonstrated in GSD-Ib and revealed the active role of the CCL4L2-VSIR axis in the interaction between the microbiota and colonic mucosal immunity. Rationally and precisely tuning the composition and structure of materials is a viable strategy to improve electrochemical deionization (EDI) performances, which yet faces enormous challenges. Herein, an eco-friendly biomimetic mineralization synthetic strategy is developed to synthesize the flower-like cobalt selenide/reduced graphene oxide (Bio-CoSe 2 /rGO) composites and used as advanced sodium ion adsorption electrodes. Benefiting from the slow and controllable reaction kinetics provided by the biomimetic mineralization process, the flower-like CoSe 2 is uniformly constructed in the rGO, which is endowed with robust architecture, substantial adsorption sites and rapid charge/ion transport. The Bio-CoSe 2 /rGO electrode yields the maximum salt adsorption capacity and salt adsorption rate of 56.3 mg g -1 and 5.6 mg g -1 min -1 respectively, and 92.5% capacity retention after 60 cycles. These results overmatch the pristine CoSe 2 and irregular granular CoSe 2 /rGO synthesized by a hydrothermal method, proving the structural superiority of the Bio-CoSe 2 /rGO composites. Furthermore, the in-depth adsorption kinetics study indicates the chemisorption nature of sodium ion adsorption. The structures of the Bio-CoSe 2 /rGO composites after long term EDI cycles are intensively studied to unveil the mechanism behind such superior EDI performances. Semiconductor nanocrystals (NCs) are promising materials for various applications. Two of four recently identified Cu α Zn β Sn γ Se δ (CZTSe) domains demonstrate metallic character, while the other two exhibit semiconductor character. The presence of both metallic and semiconductor domains in one NC can hugely benefit future applications. In contrast to traditional band gap studies in the NC community, this study emphasizes that NC domain interfaces also affect the electronic properties. Specifically, the measured band gap of a tetrapod-shaped CZTSe NC is demonstrated to originate from two specific domains (tetragonal I 4 ¯ $\bar 4$ and monoclinic P1c1 Cu 2 ZnSnSe 4 ). The heterojunction between these two semiconductor domains exhibits a staggered type-II band alignment, facilitating the separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs. Interestingly, tetrapod NCs have the potential to be efficient absorber materials with higher capacitance in photovoltaic applications due to the presence of both semiconductor/semiconductor interfaces and metal/semiconductor "Schottky"-junctions. For the two photo-absorbing domains, the calculated absorption spectra yield maximum photon-absorption coefficients of about 10 5 cm -1 in the visible and UV regions and a theoretical solar power conversion efficiency up to 20.8%. These insights into the structure-property relationships in CZTSe NCs will guide the design of more efficient advanced optical CZTSe materials for various applications., (© 2024 The Author(s). Hydrogel electrolyte can endow supercapacitors with excellent flexibility, which has developed rapidly in recent years. However, the water-rich structures of hydrogel electrolyte are easy to freeze at subfreezing and dry at high temperatures, which will affect its energy storage characteristics. The low energy density of micro supercapacitors also hinders their development. Herein, a strategy is proposed to reduce the free water activity in the hydrogel to improve the operating voltage and the energy density of the device, which is achieved through the synergistic effect of the hydrogel skeleton, N, N'-dimethylformamide (DMF), NaClO 4 and water. High concentrations of DMF and NaClO 4 are introduced into sodium alginate/polyacrylamide (SA/PAAM) hydrogel through solvent exchange to obtain SA/PAAM/DMF/NaClO 4 hydrogel electrolyte, which exhibited a high ionic conductivity of 82.1 mS cm -1 , a high breaking strength of 563.2 kPa, and a wide voltage stability window of 3.5 V. The supercapacitor devices are assembled by the process of direct adhesion of the hydrogel electrolyte and  laser induced graphene (LIG). The micro-supercapacitor exhibited an operating voltage of 2.0 V, with a specific capacitance of 2.41 mF cm -2 and a high energy density of 1.34 µWh cm -2 , and it also exhibit a high cycle stability, good flexibility, and integration performance., (© 2024 Wiley‐VCH GmbH.)

Gas vesicles (GVs) from microorganisms are genetically air-filled protein nanostructures, and serve as a new class of nanoscale contrast agents for ultrasound imaging. Recently, the genetically encoded GV gene clusters have been heterologously expressed in Escherichia coli, allowing these genetically engineered bacteria to be visualized in vivo in a real-time manner by ultrasound. However, most of the GV genes remained functionally uncharacterized, which makes it difficult to regulate and modify GVs for broad medical applications. Here, the impact of GV proteins on GV formation is systematically investigated. The results first uncovered that the deletions of GvpR or GvpU resulted in the formation of a larger proportion of small, biconical GVs compared to the full-length construct, and the deletion of GvpT resulted in a larger portion of large GVs. Meanwhile, the combination of gene deletions has resulted in several genotypes of ultrasmall GVs that span from 50 to 20 nm. Furthermore, the results showed that E. coli carrying the ΔGvpCRTU mutant can produce strong ultrasound contrast signals in mouse liver. Chondrosarcoma(CS), a prevalent primary malignant bone tumor, frequently exhibits chemotherapy resistance attributed to upregulated anti-apoptosis pathways such as the Bcl-2 family. In this manuscript, a new strategy is presented to augment chemosensitivity and mitigate systemic toxicity by harnessing a nano-enabled drug delivery hydrogel platform. The platform utilizes "PLGA-PEG-PLGA", an amphiphilic triblock copolymer combining hydrophilic polyethylene glycol (PEG) and hydrophobic polylactide glycolide (PLGA) blocks, renowned for its properties conducive to crafting a biodegradable, temperature-sensitive hydrogel. This platform is tailored to encapsulate a ratiometrically designed dual-loaded liposomes containing a first-line chemo option for CS, Doxorubicin (Dox), plus a calculated amount of small molecule inhibitor for anti-apoptotic Bcl-2 pathway, ABT-737. In vitro and in vivo evaluations demonstrate successful Bcl-2 suppression, resulting in the restoration of Dox sensitivity, evident through impeded tumor growth and amplified necrosis rates at the tumor site. This delivery system showcases remarkable thermal responsiveness, injectability, and biodegradability, all finely aligned with the clinical demands of CS treatment. Radiation enteritis is the most common complication of pelvic radiotherapy, but there is no effective prevention or treatment drug. Apoptotic T cells and their products play an important role in regulating inflammation and maintaining physiological immune homeostasis. Here it is shown that systemically infused T cell-derived apoptotic extracellular vesicles (ApoEVs) can target mice irradiated intestines and alleviate radiation enteritis. Mechanistically, radiation elevates the synthesis of intestinal 2'3' cyclic GMP-AMP (cGAMP) and activates cyclic GMP-AMP synthase (cGAS)-stimulator of interferon genes (STING) proinflammatory pathway. After systemic infusion of ApoEVs, the ectonucleotide pyrophosphatase phosphodiesterase 1 (ENPP1) enriches on the surface of ApoEVs hydrolyze extracellular cGAMP, resulting in inhibition of the cGAS-STING pathway activated by irradiation. Furthermore, after ApoEVs are phagocytosed by phagocytes, ENPP1 on ApoEVs hydrolyzed intracellular cGAMP, which serves as an intracellular cGAMP hydrolyzation mode, thereby alleviating radiation enteritis. Quasi-2D perovskites exhibit great potential in photodetectors due to their exceptional optoelectronic responsivity and stability, compared to their 3D counterparts. However, the defects are detrimental to the responsivity, response speed, and stability of perovskite photodetectors. Herein, an ultrafast photoexcitation-induced passivation technique is proposed to synergistically reduce the dimensionality at the surface and induce oxygen doping in the bulk, via tuning the photoexcitation intensity. At the optimal photoexcitation level, the excited electrons and holes generate stretching force on the Pb─I bonds at the interlayered [PbI 6 ] - , resulting in low dimensional perovskite formation, and the absorptive oxygen is combined with I vacancies at the same time. These two induced processes synergistically boost the carrier transport and interface contact performance. The most outstanding device exhibits a fast response speed with rise/decay time of 201/627 ns, with a peak responsivity/detectivity of 163 mA W -1 /4.52 × 10 10 Jones at 325 nm and the enhanced cycling stability. Membrane separation plays a crucial role in the current increasingly complex energy environment. Membranes prepared by metal-organic framework (MOF) materials usually possess unique advantages in common, such as uniform pore size, ultra-high porosity, enhanced selectivity and throughput, and excellent adsorption property, which have been contributed to the separation fields. In this comprehensive review, we summarize various designs and synthesized strategies of free-standing MOF and composite MOF-based membranes for water treatment. Special emphases are given not only on the effects of MOF on membrane performance, removal efficiencies, and elimination mechanisms, but also on the importance of MOF-based membranes for the applications of oily and micro-pollutant removal, adsorption, separation, and catalysis. Uniquely functional nanocomplexes with rich coordination environments are critical in energy storage. However, the construction of structurally versatile nanocomplexes remains challenging. In this study, a nickel-based complex with structural variations is designed via thermodynamic modulation using a dual-ligand synthesis strategy. A nickel-based nanomaterial (NiSA-SSA-160) with a large specific surface area is synthesized around the competing coordination of the host and guest molecules that differ in terms of the chemical properties of the O and S elements. Concurrently, the coordination environment of NiSA-SSA-160 is investigated via X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy. The thiol functional groups synergistically induced an electron-rich Ni structure, thus increasing the electron density of the central atom. The electrochemical performance of an assembled NiSA-SSA-160//Zn@CC battery is shown to improve significantly, with a maximum energy density of 0.54 mWh cm -2 and a peak power density of 49.49 mW cm -2 . 3D nanoprinting can significantly enhance the performance of sensors, batteries, optoelectronic/microelectronic devices, etc. However, current 3D nanoprinting methods for metal oxides are suffering from three key issues including limited material applicability, serious shape distortion, and the difficulty of heterogeneous integration. This paper discovers a mechanism in which imidazole and acrylic acid synergistically coordinate with metal ions in water. Using the mechanism, this work develops a series of metal ion synergistic coordination water-soluble (MISCWS) resins for 3D nanoprinting of various metal oxides, including MnO 2 , Cr 2 O 3 , Co 3 O 4 , and ZnO, as well as heterogeneous structures of MnO 2 /NiO, Cr 2 O 3 /Al 2 O 3 , and ZnO/MgO. Besides, the synergistic coordination effect results in a 2.54-fold increase in inorganic mass fraction within the polymer, compared with previous works, which effectively mitigates the shape distortion of metal oxide microstructures. Based on this method, this work also demonstrates a 3D ZnO microsensor with a high sensitivity (1.113 million at 200 ppm NO 2 ), surpassing the conventional 2D ZnO sensors by tenfold. Epigenetic drugs (epi-drugs) can destruct cancer cells and initiate both innate and adaptive immunity, yet they have achieved very limited success in solid tumors so far, partly attributing to their concurrent induction of the myeloid-derived suppressor cell (MDSC) population. Here, dissociable Siamese nanoparticles (SIANPs) are developed for tumor cell-targeted delivery of epi-drug CM-272 and MDSC-targeted delivery of small molecule inhibitor Ibrutinib. The SIANPs are assembled via interparticle DNA annealing and detached via tumor microenvironment-triggered strand separation. Such binary regulation induces endogenous retrovirus expression and immunogenic cell death in tumor cells while restraining the immunosuppressive effects of MDSCs, and synergistically promotes dendritic cell maturation and CD8 + T cell activation for tumor inhibition. Significantly, immune microenvironment remodeling via SIANPs further overcomes tumor resistance to immune checkpoint blockade therapy. Here, an approach to produce a hierarchical porous Fe-N-C@TABOH catalyst with densely accessible high intrinsic active FeN x sites is proposed. The method involves a single-step pyrolysis of Zn/Fe-zeolitic imidazolate framework (Zn/Fe-ZIF-H) with tetrabutylammonium hydroxide (TABOH) micelles, which is obtained by utilizing TABOH as a structural template and electronic mediator at room temperature for a brief duration of 16 min. Notably, the yield of Zn/Fe-ZIF-H is 3.5 times that of Zn/Fe-ZIF-N prepared by conventional method. Results indicate that in addition to expediting synthesis and increasing yield of the Zn/Fe-ZIF-H, the TABOH induces a hierarchical porous structure and fosters the formation of more and higher intrinsic active FeN x moieties in Fe x -N-C@TABOH, showing that TABOH is a multifunctional template. Crucially, the increased mesoporosity/external surface area and optimized microenvironment of Fe-N-C@TABOH significantly enhance ORR activity by facilitating the formation of high intrinsic active FeN x sites, increasing accessible FeN x sites, and reducing mass transfer resistance. Through structure tailoring and microenvironment optimization, the resulting Fe-N-C@TABOH exhibits superior ORR performance. DFT calculation further validates that the synergistic effect of these two factors leads to low ORR barrier and optimized * OH adsorption energy. Rationally designed defects in a crystal can confer unique properties. This study showcases a novel dual-defects engineering strategy to tailor the electrochemical response of metal-organic framework (MOF) materials used for electrochemical energy storage. Salicylic acid (SA) is identified as an effective modulator to control MOF-74 growth and induce structural defects, and cobalt cation doping is adopted for introducing a second type of defect. The resulting dual-defects engineered bimetallic MOF exhibits a discharging capacity of 218.6 mAh g -1 , 4.4 times that of the pristine MOF-74, and significantly improved cycling stability. Moreover, the engineered MOF-74(Ni 0.675 Co 0.325 )-8//Zn aqueous battery shows top energy/power density performances for Ni-Zn batteries (266.5 Wh kg -1 , 17.22 kW kg -1 ). Comprehensive investigations reveal that engineered defects modify the local coordination environment and promote the in situ electrochemical reconfiguration during operation to significantly boost the electrochemical activity. This work suggests that rational tailoring of the defects within the MOF crystal is an effective strategy to manipulate the coordination environment of the metal centers and the corresponding electrochemical reconfiguration for electrochemical applications., (© 2024 Wiley‐VCH GmbH.)

Advanced artificial nerve conduits offer a promising alternative for nerve injury repair. Current research focuses on improving the therapeutic effectiveness of nerve conduits by optimizing scaffold materials and functional components. In this study, a novel poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT)-integrated fish swim bladder (FSB) is presented as a conductive nerve conduit with ordered topology and electrical stimulation to promote nerve regeneration. PEDOT nanomaterials and adhesive peptides (IKVAV) are successfully incorporated onto the decellularized FSB substrate through pre-coating with polydopamine. The obtained PEDOT/IKVAV-integrated FSB substrate exhibits outstanding mechanical properties, high electrical conductivity, stability, as well as excellent biocompatibility and bioadhesive properties. In vitro studies confirm that the PEDOT/IKVAV-integrated FSB can effectively facilitate the growth and directional extension of pheochromocytoma 12 cells and dorsal root ganglion neurites. In addition, in vivo experiments demonstrate that the proposed PEDOT/IKVAV-integrated FSB conduit can accelerate defective nerve repair and functional restoration. The findings indicate that the FSB-derived conductive nerve conduits with multiple regenerative inducing signals integration provide a conducive milieu for nerve regeneration, exhibiting great potential for repairing long-segment neural defects., (© 2024 The Author(s). The design and construction of continuous flow biochemical reactors comprising immobilized biocatalysts have generated great interest in the efficient synthesis of value-added chemicals. Living cells use compartmentalization and reaction-diffusion processes for spatiotemporal regulation of biocatalytic reactions, and implementing these strategies into continuous flow reactors can offer new opportunities in reactor design and application. Herein, the fabrication of protocell-based continuous flow reactors for enzyme and whole-cell mediated biocatalysis is demonstrated. Semipermeable membranized coacervate vesicles are employed as model protocells that spontaneously sequester enzymes or accumulate living bacteria to produce embodied microreactors capable of single- or multiple-step catalytic reactions. By packing millions of the enzyme/bacteria-containing coacervate vesicles in a glass column, a facile, cost-effective, and modular methodology capable of performing oxidoreductase, peroxidase and lipolytic reactions, enzyme-mediated L-DOPA synthesis, and whole-cell glycolysis under continuous flow conditions, is demonstrated. It is shown that the protocell-nested enzymes and bacterial cells exhibit enhanced activities and stability under deleterious operating conditions compared with their non-encapsulated counterparts. These results provide a step toward the engineering of continuous flow reactors based on cell-like microscale agents and offer opportunities in the development of green and sustainable industrial bioprocessing., (© 2024 The Author(s). Nickel-rich layered oxide cathode material LiNi x Co y Mn z O 2 (NCM) has emerged as a promising candidate for next-generation lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). These cathode materials possess high theoretical specific capacity, fast electron/ion transfer rate, and high output voltage. However, their potential is impeded by interface instability, irreversible phase transition, and the resultant significant capacity loss, limiting their practical application in LIBs. In this work, a simple and scalable approach is proposed to prepare gradient cathode material (M-NCM) with excellent structural stability and rate performance. Taking advantage of the strong coordination of Ni 2+ with ammonia and the reduction reaction of KMnO 4 , the elemental compositions of the Ni-rich cathode are reasonably adjusted. The resulted gradient compositional design plays a crucial role in stabilizing the crystal structure, which effectively mitigates Li/Ni mixing and suppresses unwanted surficial parasitic reactions. As a result, the M-NCM cathode maintains 98.6% capacity after 200 cycles, and a rapid charging ability of 107.5 mAh g -1 at 15 C. Furthermore, a 1.2 Ah pouch cell configurated with graphite anode demonstrates a lifespan of over 500 cycles with only 8% capacity loss. Photonic crystals are a new class of optical microstructure materials characterized by a dielectric constant that varies periodically with space and features a photonic bandgap. Inspired by natural photonic crystals such as butterfly scales, a series of artificial photonic crystals are developed for use in integrated photonic platforms, biosensing, communication, and other fields. Among them, colloidal photonic crystals (CPCs) have gained widespread attention due to their excellent optical properties and advantages, such as ease of preparation and functionalization. This work reviews the classification and self-assembly principles of CPCs, details some of the latest biomedical applications of large-area, high-quality CPCs prepared using advanced self-assembly methods, summarizes the existing challenges in CPC construction and application, and anticipates future development directions and optimization strategy. With further advancements, CPCs are expected to play a more critical role in biosensors, drug delivery, cell research, and other fields, bringing significant benefits to biomedical research and clinical practice., (© 2024 The Author(s). Aqueous zinc-iodine batteries (AZIBs) are highly appealing for energy requirements owing to their safety, cost-effectiveness, and scalability. However, the inadequate redox kinetics and severe shuttling effect of polyiodide ions impede their commercial viability. Herein, several Zn-MOF-derived porous carbon materials are designed, and the further preparation of iron-doped porous carbon (Fe-N-C, M9) with varied Fe doping contents is optimized based on a facile self-assembly/carbonization approach. M9, with atomic Fe coordinated to nitrogen atoms, is employed as an efficient cathode host for AZIBs. Functional modifications of porous carbon hosts involving the doping species and levels are investigated. The adsorption tests, in situ Raman spectroscopy, and in situ UV-vis results demonstrate the adsorption capability and charge-discharge mechanism for the iodine species. Furthermore, experimental findings and theoretical analyses have proven that the redox conversion of iodine is enhanced through a physicochemical confinement effect. This study offers basic principles for the strategic design of single-atom dispersed carbon as an iodine host for high-performance AZIBs. Prussian blue analogues (PBAs) have been widely studied in aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) due to the characteristics of large specific surface area, open aperture, and straightforward synthesis. In this work, vanadium-based PBA nanocubes were firstly prepared using a mild in-situ conversion strategy at room temperature without the protection of noble gas. Benefiting from the multiple-redox active sites of V3+/V4+, V4+/V5+ and Fe2+/Fe3+, the cathode exhibited an excellent discharge specific capacity of 200 mA h g-1 in AZIBs, which is much higher than those of other metal-based PBAs nanocubes. To further improve the long-term cycling stability of the V-PBA cathode, a high concentration water-in-salt electrolyte (4.5 M ZnSO4 + 3 M Zn(OTf)2), and a water-based eutectic electrolyte (5.55 M glucose + 3 M Zn(OTf)2) were designed to successfully inhibit the dissolution of vanadium and improve the deposition of Zn2+ onto the zinc anode. More importantly, the assembled AZIBs maintained 55% of their highest discharge specific capacity even after 10000 cycles at 10 A g-1 with superior rate capability. This study provides a new strategy for the preparation of pure PBA nanostructures and a new direction for enhancing the long-term cycling stability of PBA-based AZIBs at high current densities for industrialization prospects., (© 2024 Wiley‐VCH GmbH.)
