This work demonstrates the low-temperature operation of solid-state lithium metal batteries (LMBs) through the development of a fluorinated and plastic-crystal-embedded elastomeric electrolyte (F-PCEE). The F-PCEE is formed via polymerization-induced phase separation between the polymer matrix and plastic crystal phase, offering a high mechanical strain (≈300%) and ionic conductivity (≈0.23 mS cm -1 ) at -10 °C. Notably, strong phase separation between two phases leads to the selective distribution of lithium (Li) salts within the plastic crystal phase, enabling superior elasticity and high ionic conductivity at low temperatures. The F-PCEE in a Li/LiNi 0.8 Co 0.1 Mn 0.1 O 2 full cell maintains 74.4% and 42.5% of discharge capacity at -10 °C and -20 °C, respectively, compared to that at 25 °C. Furthermore, the full cell exhibits 85.3% capacity retention after 150 cycles at -10 °C and a high cut-off voltage of 4.5 V, representing one of the highest cycling performances among the reported solid polymer electrolytes for low-temperature LMBs. This work attributes the prolonged cycling lifetime of F-PCEE at -10 °C to the great mechanical robustness to suppress the Li-dendrite growth and ability to form superior LiF-rich interphases. Sac embolization of abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs) remains clinically limited by endoleak recurrences. These recurrences are correlated with recanalization due to the presence of endothelial lining and matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs)-mediated aneurysm progression. This study incorporated doxycycline (DOX), a well-known sclerosant and MMPs inhibitor, into a shear-thinning biomaterial (STB)-based vascular embolizing hydrogel. The addition of DOX was expected to improve embolizing efficacy while preventing endoleaks by inhibiting MMP activity and promoting endothelial removal. The results showed that STBs containing 4.5% w/w silicate nanoplatelet and 0.3% w/v of DOX were injectable and had a 2-fold increase in storage modulus compared to those without DOX. STB-DOX hydrogels also reduced clotting time by 33% compared to untreated blood. The burst release of DOX from the hydrogels showed sclerosing effects after 6 h in an ex vivo pig aorta model. Sustained release of DOX from hydrogels on endothelial cells showed MMP inhibition ( ca . an order of magnitude larger than control groups) after 7 days. The hydrogels successfully occluded a patient-derived abdominal aneurysm model at physiological blood pressures and flow rates. Interleukin-33 (IL-33) is an epithelial-derived cytokine that plays an important role in immune-mediated diseases such as asthma, atopic dermatitis, and rheumatoid arthritis. Although IL-33 is considered a potential target for the treatment of allergy-related diseases, no small molecule that inhibits IL-33 has been reported. Based on the structure-activity relationship and in vitro 2D NMR studies employing 15 N-labeled IL-33, we identified that the oxazolo[4,5-c]-quinolinone analog 7 c binds to the interface region of IL-33 and IL-33 receptor (ST2), an orphan receptor of the IL-1 receptor family. Compound 7 c effectively inhibited the production of IL-6 in human mast cells in a dose-dependent manner. Dimensionality plays an important role in the charge transport properties of organic semiconductors. Although three-dimensional semiconductors, such as Si, are common in inorganic materials, imparting electrical conductivity to covalent three-dimensional organic polymers is challenging. Now, the synthesis of a three-dimensional π-conjugated porous organic polymer (3D p-POP) using catalyst-free Diels-Alder cycloaddition polymerization followed by acid-promoted aromatization is presented. With a surface area of 801 m 2  g -1 , full conjugation throughout the carbon backbone, and an electrical conductivity of 6(2)×10 -4  S cm -1 upon treatment with I 2 vapor, the 3D p-POP is the first member of a new class of permanently porous 3D organic semiconductors., (© 2020 The Authors. Aqueous Zn-Br batteries (ZBBs) offer promising next-generation high-density energy storage for energy storage systems, along with distinctive cost effectiveness particularly in membraneless and flowless (MLFL) form. Unfortunately, they generally suffer from uncontrolled diffusion of corrosive bromine components, which cause serious self-discharge and capacity fade. An MLFL-ZBB is presented that fundamentally tackles the problem of bromine crossover by converting bromine to the polybromide anion using protonated pyridinic nitrogen doped microporous carbon decorated on graphite felt (NGF). The NGF electrodes efficiently capture bromine and polybromide anions at the abundant protonated nitrogen dopant sites within micropores and facilitate effective conversion of bromine into polybromides through electrochemical-chemical growth mechanism. The MLFL-ZBBs with NGF exhibit an extraordinary stability over 1000 charge/discharge cycles, with an energy efficiency over 80%, the highest value ever reported among membraneless Zn-Br batteries. Desiccant driven dehumidification for maintaining the proper humidity levels and atmospheric water capture with minimum energy penalty are important aspects in heat pumps, refrigeration, gas and liquid purifications, gas sensing, and clean water production for improved human health and comfort. Water adsorption by using nanoporous materials has emerged as a viable alternative to energy-intensive industrial processes, thus understanding the significance of their porosity, high surface areas, vast pore volumes, chemical and structural features relative to the water adsorption is quite important. In this review article, important features of nanoporous materials are presented, including zeolites, porous carbons, as well as crystalline and amorphous porous organic polymers (POPs) to define the interactions between the water molecules and the polar/non-polar functional groups on the surface of these nanoporous materials. In particular, focus is placed on the recent developments in POPs in the context of water capture as a result of their remarkable stability towards water and wide range of available synthetic routes and building blocks for their synthesis. We also highlighted recent approaches to increase the water sorption capacity of POPs by modifying their structure, morphology, porosity, and chemical functionality while emphasizing their promising future in this emerging area., (© 2019 Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Tumor heterogeneity is associated with the therapeutic failures of targeted therapies. To overcome such heterogeneity, a novel targeted therapy is proposed that could kill tumor populations with diverse phenotypes by delivering nonselective cytotoxins to target-positive cells as well as to the surrounding tumor cells via a recurrent bystander killing effect. A representative prodrug is prepared that targets integrin αvβ3 and releases cytotoxins upon entering cells or by caspase-3. This allows the prodrug to kill integrin αvβ3-positive cells and upregulate caspase-3, which in turn, activates the prodrug to release a cytotoxin that could subsequently diffuse into and kill the neighboring tumor cells. Apoptotic cells further upregulate and release caspase-3, which activate more prodrugs leading to another round of adjacent cell death and caspase-3 release. Thus, the bystander killing effect could occur repeatedly, leading to augmented and widespread anticancer activity. This strategy provides an avenue that could advance the current targeted therapy.

The synthesis of highly microporous, epoxy-functionalized porous organic polymers (ep-POPs) by a one-pot, catalyst-free Diels-Alder cycloaddition polymerization is reported. The high oxygen content of ep-POPs offer efficient hydrogen-bonding sites for water molecules, thus leading to high water-uptake capacities up to 39.2-42.4 wt % under a wide temperature range of 5-45 °C, which covers the span of climatic conditions and manufacturing applications in which such materials might be used. Identification of potent agonists of odorant receptors (ORs), a major class of G protein-coupled receptors, remains challenging due to complex receptor-ligand interactions. ORs are present in both olfactory and non-chemosensory tissues, indicating roles beyond odor detection that may include modulating physiological functions in non-olfactory tissues. Selective and potent agonists specific for particular ORs can be used to investigate physiological functions of ORs in non-chemosensory tissues. In this study, we designed and synthesized novel synthetic dehydroacetic acid analogues as agonists of odorant receptor 895 (Olfr895) expressed in bladder. Among the synthesized analogues, (E)-3-((E)-1-hydroxy-3-(piperidin-1-yl)allylidene)-6-methyl-2H-pyran-2,4(3H)-dione (10) exhibited extremely high agonistic activity for Olfr895 in Dual-Glo luciferase reporter (EC 50 =9 nm), Ca 2+ imaging, and chemotactic migration assays. Molecular docking and site-directed mutagenesis studies suggested that a combination of hydrophilic and hydrophobic interactions is central to the selective and specific binding of 10 to Olfr895. Organic structure-directing agents (OSDAs), such as quaternary ammonium cations and amines, used in the synthesis of zeolites and related crystalline microporous oxides usually end up entrapped inside the void spaces of the crystallized inorganic host lattice. But none of them is known to form direct chemical bonds to the framework of these industrially important catalysts and adsorbents. We demonstrate that ECR-40, currently regarded as a typical silicoaluminophosphate molecular sieve, constitutes instead a new family of inorganic-organic hybrid networks in which the OSDAs are covalently bonded to the inorganic framework. ECR-40 crystallization begins with the formation of an Al-OSDA complex in the liquid phase in which the Al is octahedrally coordinated. This unit is incorporated in the crystallizing ECR-40. An approach is presented to create arrays of quasi-spherical microdroplets by surfaces called "spheroform" inspired by micro-/nanostructures found in the back of the Namib desert beetle. Spheroform is fabricated by microarray formation of catecholamine polymers on the superhydrophobic background. Spheroform is able to precisely control spheroid sizes of therapeutic islet cells and mesenchymal stem cells. The condensed version: Thiolated glycol chitosan can form stable nanoparticles with polymerized siRNAs through charge-charge interactions and self-cross-linking (see scheme). This poly-siRNA/glycol chitosan nanoparticles (psi-TGC) provided sufficient in vivo stability for systemic delivery of siRNAs.
