The participation of both ligand and the metal center in the redox events has been recognized as one of the ways to attain the formal high valent complexes for the late 3d metals, such as Ni and Cu. Such an approach has been employed successfully to stabilize a Ni(III) bisphenoxyl diradical species in which there exist an equilibrium between the ligand and the Ni localized resultant spin. The present work, however, broadens the scope of the previously reported three oxidized equivalent species by conveying the approaches that tend to affect the reported equilibrium in CH 3 CN at 233 K. Various spectroscopic characterization revealed that employing exogenous N-donor ligands like 1-methyl imidazole and pyridine favors the formation of the Ni centered localized spin though axial binding. In contrast, due to its steric hinderance, quinoline favors an exclusive ligand localized radical species. DFT studies shed light on the novel intermediates' complex electronic structure. Chemical recycling of polymers to their constituent monomers is the foremost challenge in building a sustainable circular plastics economy. Here, we report a strategy for highly efficient depolymerization of various CO 2 -based alicyclic polycarbonates to epoxide monomers in solvent-free conditions by a simple Cr III -Salen complex mediated catalytic pyrolysis process. The chemical recycling of the widely studied poly(cyclohexene carbonate) exhibits excellent reactivity (TOF up to 3000 h -1 , 0.1 mol % catalyst loading) and high epoxide monomer selectivity (>99 %). The synthesis of three complex series of the form [AnCl 2 (salen)(Pyx) 2 ] (H 2 salen=N,N'-bis(salicylidene)ethylenediamine; Pyx=pyridine, 4-methylpyridine, 3,5-dimethylpyridine) with tetravalent early actinides (An=Th, U, Np, Pu) is reported with the goal to elucidate the affinity of these heavy elements for small neutral N-donor molecules. Structure determination by single-crystal XRD and characterization of bulk powders with infrared spectroscopy reveals isostructurality within each respective series and the same complex conformation in all reported structures. Although the trend of interatomic distances for An-Cl and An-N (imine nitrogen of salen or pyridyl nitrogen of Pyx) was found to reflect an ionic behavior, the trend of the An-O distances can only be described with additional covalent interactions for all elements heavier than thorium. All experimental results are supported by quantum chemical calculations, which confirm the mostly ionic character in the An-N and An-Cl bonds, as well as the highest degree of covalency of the An-O bonds. The formation of plastic or brittle organic crystals of salen derivatives that depend on the solvents employed for crystallization is demonstrated. Large yellow crystals (ranging from mm to cm size) of ten different salen derivatives were obtained and investigated. Among them, (bis(2-hydroxyacetophenone)ethylenediimine) 2, which was recrystallized from dichloromethane, tetrahydrofuran or chloroform, exhibited plastic deformation behaviour when mechanical force was applied to the (001) face. In contrast, when 2 was recrystallized from benzene, brittle crystals were obtained. Face indexing confirmed that different crystal faces were obtained by depending on the solvent employed for recrystallization, which leads to either flexible (plastic) or brittle crystals. Photoluminescence with a band maximum at 510 nm and thermochromism related to tautomerism between OH and NH forms were also investigated, and indicate that 2 is a flexible organic single-crystal material with multifunctional properties., (© 2020 Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. The development of a team-based approach to research-led transnational practical chemistry teaching is described in which a team of five Chinese students on an articulated transnational degree programme, supported by a team of academic and technical staff, carried out a study examining the structural chemistry of a series of manganese(III) salen complexes. A series of four crystallographically characterized manganese(III) salen complexes with ancillary carboxylate ligands are reported here. The carboxylate coordination modes range from the bridging syn-anti μ 2 -κO : κO' mode observed in the predominant cyclohexanoate and isobutyrate species, to a capping terminal monodentate mode for the adamantanoate species, and an unusual mixture of bridging and terminal coordination modes observed in a second minor phase of the cyclohexanoate species. The variation on extended structures based on the weakly interacting aliphatic backbones may provide a useful basis for further structural studies., (© 2020 The Authors. Developing solid catalysts with multiple active sites working cooperatively is desirable for efficient chemical transformations. However, most solid catalysts are rigid and impede the cooperation between their spatially isolated active sites. Two flexible porous organic frameworks (POFs) with integrated Co(salen) as active sites have been successfully synthesized for mimicking the cooperative modes of enzymes. The POFs exhibit second-order rate dependence on Co(salen) concentration in the network and afford much higher TOF (3300 versus 2670 h -1 ) than the homogeneous counterpart in the hydration of propylene epoxide. POFs with a flexible network thus not only facilitate but also enhance the cooperation of nearby Co(salen). A series of new metallosalen-based ionic porous organic polymers (POPs) were synthesized for the first time using a simple unique strategy based on the free-radical copolymerization reaction. Various techniques were used to characterize the physicochemical properties of these catalysts. These well-designed materials endowed high surface area, hierarchical porous structures, and enhanced CO 2 /N 2 adsorptive selectivity. Moreover, these POPs having both metal centers (Lewis acid) and ionic units (nucleophile) could serve as bifunctional catalysts in the catalytic conversion of CO 2 into high value-added chemicals without any additional co-catalyst under mild and solvent-free conditions, for example, CO 2 /epoxides cycloaddition and Nformylation of amines from CO 2 and hydrosilanes. The results demonstrated that the irregular porous structure was very favorable for the diffusion of substrates and products, and the microporous structural property resulted in the enrichment of CO 2 near the catalytic centers in the CO 2 -involved transformations. The synthesis of a series of Ni(II) -salen-based complexes with the general formula of [Ni(H2 L)] (H4 L=R(2) -N,N'-bis[R(1) -5-(4'-benzoic acid)salicylidene]; H4 L1: R(2) =2,3-diamino-2,3-dimethylbutane and R(1) =H; H4 L2: R(2) =1,2-diaminoethane and R(1) =tert-butyl and H4 L3: R(2) =1,2-diaminobenzene and R(1) =tert-butyl) is presented. Their electronic structure and self-assembly was studied. The organic ligands of the salen complexes are functionalized with peripheral carboxylic groups for driving molecular self-assembly through hydrogen bonding. In addition, other substituents, that is, tert-butyl and diamine bridges (2,3-diamino-2,3-dimethylbutane, 1,2-diaminobenzene or 1,2-diaminoethane), were used to tune the two-dimensional (2D) packing of these building blocks. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the spatial distribution of the LUMOs is affected by these substituents, in contrast with the HOMOs, which remain unchanged. Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) shows that the three complexes self-assemble into three different 2D nanoarchitectures at the solid-liquid interface on graphite. Two structures are porous and one is close-packed. These structures are stabilized by hydrogen bonds in one dimension, while the 2D interaction is governed by van der Waals forces and is tuned by the nature of the substituents, as confirmed by theoretical calculations. A covalently-linked salen-C60 (H2L) assembly binds a range of transition metal cations in close proximity to the fullerene cage to give complexes [M(L)] (M=Mn, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Pd), [MCl(L)] (M=Cr, Fe) and [V(O)L]. Attaching salen covalently to the C60 cage only marginally slows down metal binding at the salen functionality compared to metal binding to free salen. Coordination of metal cations to salen-C60 introduces to these fullerene derivatives strong absorption bands across the visible spectrum from 400 to 630 nm, the optical features of which are controlled by the nature of the transition metal. The redox properties of the metal-salen-C60 complexes are determined both by the fullerene and by the nature of the transition metal, enabling the generation of a wide range of fullerene-containing charged species, some of which possess two or more unpaired electrons. The presence of the fullerene cage enhances the affinity of these complexes for carbon nanostructures, such as single-, double- and multiwalled carbon nanotubes and graphitised carbon nanofibres, without detrimental effects on the catalytic activity of the metal centre, as demonstrated in styrene oxidation catalysed by [Cu(L)].
