Background: The extensive use of various electronic games and communication devices, particularly among children and adolescents, has raised concerns, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study investigated the link between screen time and internalizing disorders, such as anxiety and depression, among individuals aged =18 during the global COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: This systematic review aims to summarize scientific publications from 2019 to early 2022 by searching databases, including the Cochrane Library, PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, and PsycINFO, to identify suitable studies. In each paper, we searched the following keywords and their synonyms: screen, child, high school, middle school, and psychiatric disorders. The quality of the selected papers was evaluated using a checklist recommended by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) for observational cohort studies. Results: Out of 986 reports identified, we included 12 papers with 14,483 participants. The study revealed a negative correlation between screen time (TV, computer, video games, and mobile phones) and behavioral outcomes. Smartphones were the most frequently used devices, with video games being more prevalent among older participants for education, communication, and entertainment purposes. The prevalence of depression ranged between 10% and 25%. Furthermore, anxiety and depression were identified as predictors of increased screen usage. Some results displayed variation based on the type of screen exposure, the questionnaires used, and the age of the participants. Conclusions: The findings imply an indirect association between increased screen time and depression and anxiety. The Chapter 5 of the Mental Healthcare Act, 2017, referred henceforth as "the Act," lays down the "rights of person with mental illness" and it forms the core depth of this legislation. The Act makes provision for the care, treatment, and rehabilitation measures to reduce its recurrence. One of the main objectives of the Act is to make inclusion and rehabilitation of mentally ill persons into the society and help in eliminating the stigma attached to mental illness in India. The significance of the new Act is seen as soon as one turns to the facts, an estimated that 20% of Indians are likely to suffer from depression and 14% of Indians have mental disorders as per a WHO report. The Act covers everything from common to severe mental disorders and from mental hospitals to primary health-care centers. The Act decriminalizes the attempt of suicide having the presumption that the person who attempted suicide has undergone severe stress, and the Act mandates helping the person rather than punishing them. The Act provides the right of having access to treatment at affordable cost, and of good quality. The government must provide for a range of services including outpatient as well as inpatient services, medicines free of cost, specialized services of children and adolescents, etc. Another key feature is the implementation of medical insurance for treating those with mental illness at parity with physical illness by all insurers. However, the Act also has some shortcomings such as there is the breach of the fundamental right – "right to privacy" as the Act provides power to the nominated representative to unlimited access to the records of the persons with mental illness. Then, there is the question of the feasibility of implementation of the Act, which is the scarcity of resources, under the budget allocated to the National Mental Health Programme was just rupees 40 crores in FY18. This means that the budget allocated in India for mental health makes up only 0.06% of the total health-care budget. Further, there are only 3800+ registered psychiatrists in India when the need is for at least 13,500 psychiatrists, this explains the 80%–90% treatment gap that exists in India. Under the Act, individual persons living without family members or caregivers would struggle to get appropriate care in a Mental Health Establishment if their capacity is limited, by a mental disorder, even if it is limited for a short while if the medical practitioner tries to treat a person without valid consent, this might make them vulnerable to be charged for negligence and/or be prosecuted for assault or battery. Furthermore, the Act is silent on matters such as management of properties of persons with severe mental illness, rehabilitation, and integration of homeless mentally ill into the community. The Act further provides the police with the power to enter a person's private residence (without a magistrate's approval) if they have reason to believe that an individual is mentally ill. The Act does not mention the use of ambulance to transport such patients. This research paper will discuss all these points and more in detail, analyzing what the current Act offers and where it lacks or falls short of benefitting the ones it is meant to help, care, protect, and rehabilitate. Background: An emerging area of psycho-cardiology explores fear of disease progression in cardiac patients, following extensive research of this topic in psycho-oncology. Novel interventions that target cardiac fear of progression(FoP) may be valuable in bridging the gap between the high psychological support needs in cardiac care and limitations surrounding the efficacy of standard psychosocial treatments. However, there appears to be limited research characterizing FoP in cardiac patients with which to inform potential interventions. Aims: Using a mixed methods approach in two inter-related studies, we aimed to develop a preliminary conceptualization of cardiac-FoP. Methods: Study 1 involved a scoping review of existing qualitative research to identify the range of fears relating to disease progression reported by cardiac patients. Study 2 investigated the prevalence and distress levels associated with a selection of fears identified in Study 1 through a quantitative study of 194 cardiac patient admissions at two Australian hospitals. Results: Study 1 conceptualized cardiac-FoP in two ways, by the content of the fears and by the behavioral responses to the fears. Fears were categorized into seven broad domains: fears associated with death, health, interpersonal relationships, treatment, accessing help, role responsibilities, and physical activity. Five categories of behavioral responses were identified: avoidance, hyperawareness, symptom misattribution, seeking help, and lifestyle changes. Study 2 indicated a high prevalence of fear, with an average endorsement of 40.9%. When fear was endorsed, an average of 45.2% of cardiac patients experienced moderate-to-severe distress. Discussion: This paper provides an initial conceptualization of FoP in cardiac patients, providing preliminary evidence of the rates of fear and associated distress in this population. Coronavirus disease of 2019 (COVID‑19), which has affected almost all medical professions, has had a significant negative influence on dental care. Additionally, non‑urgent dental procedures were stopped during the epidemic in a number of countries. The purpose of this systematic review was to examine the impact of COVID‑19 on individuals who had undergone or are currently having orthodontic treatment in any capacity during/after the pandemic’s occurrence. After a thorough search of the online journals, a total of 634 documents were found, and 416 of the papers were initially chosen. The removal of 362 similar or duplicate publications that followed led to the initial availability of 54 separate papers. The final selection consisted of 23 documents, mostly in vitro investigations, cross‑sectional studies, and comparative evaluations, which satisfied the necessary inclusion and exclusion criteria. COVID‑19 had a significant impact on nearly every sphere of the patients’ lives who were undergoing orthodontic treatment. However, people who are currently availing of various orthodontic treatment modalities did not experience the same issues as the ones faced by patients earlier. Teleorthodontics emerged as a viable option to access treatment during the lockdown period caused due to the pandemic. Dental anxiety and pain in pediatric patients are one of the major reasons leading to untreated dental caries and dental negligence. This study is a systematic review to check the efficacy of aromatherapy using essential oils to help pediatric patients (6-12 years of age) overcome dental anxiety and pain before, during, and after any dental procedure The study designs included were randomized control trial, cross sectional, in vivo studies explaining the effectiveness of aromatherapy for dental anxiety and pain in pediatric children in the age group of 6-12 years. The studies and manuscripts published between January 2013 and April 2023 on PubMed, Google Scholar, and Cochrane Library published in English were considered. The evaluation of effectiveness by using any faces pain scales or checking salivary cortisol or by checking vitals. A systematic review of literature and meta-analysis was performed. This study followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review 2020, the Cochrane Handbook for systematic reviews of interventions, version 5.1.0. The conclusions of all studies indicated that aromatherapy is an effective alternative therapy that can be practiced in dentistry for anxious pediatric dental patients as it reduces anxiety. Parkinson's disease (PD) is a heterogeneous progressive neurodegenerative disorder, with a triad of motor symptoms with akinesia/bradykinesia, resting tremor (4–6 Hz), and rigidity. It is the second most common neurodegenerative disease after Alzheimer's disease. The overall management of PD depends on the status of symptoms, functioning of the patients, impairment, disability, and its impact on quality of life. Depression, anxiety disorders, apathy, anhedonia, psychosis, cognitive impairments, dementia, and impulse control disorders (ICDs) are the common psychiatric symptoms/disorders comorbid with PD. Depression remains the most common psychiatric disorder reported to be comorbid with PD. Several pharmacological and nonpharmacological management strategies are used for the treatment of comorbid psychiatric disorders in PD. Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors and serotonin norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors are used to treat depression in patients with PD. The best evidence of efficacy in PD psychosis is for clozapine and pimavanserin. The treatment for cognitive impairments in PD remains poorly researched. Rivastigmine is the only approved treatment for PD as per the Food and Drug Administration. Pramipexole, a dopamine agonist (DA), is reported to cause improvement in the symptoms of decreased willingness in apathy. The treatment approaches for different sleep disorders in PD are different. Identifying the cause, reviewing the patient's ongoing medications, and evaluating the impact of comorbid medical conditions and sleep hygiene are common to all conditions related to sleep disorders. The first approach for treating ICD symptoms is the reduction or discontinuation of DAs. The psychiatric symptoms in patients with PD are highly prevalent, and their management should be included in the basic treatment algorithm for PD. COVID-19 pandemic has challenged and overwhelmed most healthcare institutions and healthcare workers, across the world. Despite being unprepared for this pandemic, frontline workers have worked relentlessly to provide the much-needed care to these patients. Doctors from different branches of medicine, including dermatologists, came forward and played a substantial role in mitigating the impact of this pandemic on the general population. Sadly, in the process, these healthcare workers faced many personal, social, psychological, economic, and health-related issues. The psychological burden and health-related issues received due attention in the main-stream news as well as scientific research papers. With most frontline workers isolated from their families, social media became the new platform to reduce the sense of isolation and share their anxiety, insomnia, and fatigue. Background and Objective: Coronavirus is spreading across the globe since December 2019. As India's first case was reported on January 30, 2020, the spread of this virus is experiencing by our population. As a result, there are extensive emotional distress and anxiety among populations due to this pandemic. Screening mental health is important for psychological well-being of any individual during this pandemic. The objective of this study was to validate the Coronavirus Anxiety Scale (CAS) in an Indian population. Materials and Methods: The research proposal was laid out before an ethical clearance committee, which approved the conduct of the research and consequent publication of the paper. Data were collected from 246 respondents through online. CAS, developed by Lee (2020), was adopted for the study. Informed consent was given by all the respondents, and their participation was voluntary. AMOS and SPSS were used to calculate confirmatory factor analysis and other statistical analyses. Bartlett's test of sphericity and Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin (KMO) test, and Cronbach's alpha, were also calculated. Convergent validity was calculated through average variance extracted (AVE) and composite reliability (CR) in Microsoft Excel. Results, and Conclusions: Bartlett's test of sphericity was highly significant measuring Chi-square = 494.004, df = 10, and P < 0.001. The KMO was acceptable at 0.805. Fit indices (P < 0.001, Chi-square/df = 3.24, goodness of fit index = 0.976, Tucker-Lewis index = 0.954, and comparative fit index = 0.977) are statistically significant. Cronbach's alpha coefficient (0.822), AVE (0.526), and CR (0.745) were adequate. The overall findings of the analyses demonstrate that the CAS is a reliable and valid scale that evaluates the severity levels of dysfunctional anxiety linked to COVID-19 in an Indian sample. The objective of this systematic review was to examine the pooled prevalence of common mental disorder (CMD) and to evaluate the predictability of screening instruments to detect CMD in the children and adolescent population in India. Data sources included the MEDLINE, PubMed, PyschEXTRA, and PyschINFO up to 2020, with additional studies identified from a search of reference lists to examine the diagnostic utility of tools carried out in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analyses guidelines, PRISMA within parentheses after the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analyses guidelines (PRISMA). Only studies involving children and adolescents with an independent measure of depression and anxiety in India were included. Random effects meta-analyses were employed to calculate a pooled estimate of depression prevalence. Twenty studies met all inclusion and exclusion criteria for the systematic review. The analysis showed that several tools were used in different regions of the nation to measure CMD such as the beck depression inventory (BDI), Children's Depression Rating Scale-Revised (CDRS-R), and Depression Anxiety Stress Scale. The pooled prevalence of depression was 19% (95% confidence interval (CI) = 12.57–27.12), 15% (95% CI = 4.67–30.90) for anxiety, and 11% (95% CI = 4.37–19.77) for any depressive disorder. In terms of BDI had the highest sensitivity (61%) while CDRS-R had the highest specificity (75%). Given the high heterogeneity of the studies, there is insufficient evidence that any tool accurately screens for CMD and likely to underestimate the true prevalence. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Research on climatic parameters contributing to psychiatric disorder seasonality is limited, particularly in subtropical, arid climates like Rajasthan, necessitating investigation into seasonal variations in psychiatric disorder incidence in the region. This study investigates seasonal variations in psychiatric disorder prevalence over 2 years at a Rajasthan tertiary healthcare center, aiming to uncover links with climatic factors. Aims: To investigate seasonal variations in the utilization of outpatient psychiatry services and elucidate potential determinants contributing to these temporal variations. Settings and Design: This is a hospital-based study. A retrospective chart review of all new patients who utilized psychiatry outpatient services from July 2021 to July 2023 was conducted. Methods and Material: Data were gathered from psychiatric outpatient records of adults (July 2021 to July 2023), diagnosed using ICD-10. Seasons were categorized: winter (November-January), spring (February-April), summer (May-July), and rainy (August-October). Meteorological data, temperature, and day length were obtained. Statistical analyses, including Pearson correlation and Chi-square fitness, assessed seasonal associations with psychiatric disorders. Results: A total of 29,164 patient records were observed. Depression correlated with temperature and photoperiod. Mania peaked in August, linked to day length. Schizophrenia showed seasonal variation without environmental correlation. Anxiety peaked in March with no statistical significance. Obsessive compulsive disorder cases spiked in June, moderately correlated with temperature and photoperiod. Alcohol-related disorders peaked in December, while opioid dependence remained steady. Cannabis-induced psychosis peaked in summer, strongly correlated with temperature and day length. Headaches surged in August, positively correlated with temperature and day length. Conclusions: This study reveals complex relationships between seasonality, environmental factors, and psychiatric disorders, emphasizing their importance in mental health research and practice. Background: Audiovisual distraction is a potentially good technique to reduce medical treatment procedure-related fear and anxiety among children. However, few studies have assessed its effectiveness. Objective: To conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis for evaluating the effectiveness of audiovisual distraction in reducing pain anxiety in pediatrics. Methods: Randomized control trials and experimental studies that reported the use of audiovisual distraction during medical/dental treatments among children aged 3-8 years, used the Face, Legs, Activity, Cry, Consolability (FLACC) scale to assess pain, and were published between 2005-2021 and in English were retrieved from PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science. A random-effects model was used for evidence analysis. Results: A total of four studies were included in the systematic review and meta-analysis: two were from South Asia and one each were from Africa and North America. Three of these studies were randomized control trials. The variability among the studies was high. Three of the four studies found that AV techniques were significantly effective in reducing pain during procedures compared with the control group (P < 0.00001), while one study found no difference; the cumulative evidence in the forest plot was similar. Conclusion: Cumulative evidence suggests that the use of audiovisual distraction is an effective strategy in reducing medical/dental procedures-related pain anxiety among children aged 3-8 years. However, evidence on this is currently limited, and thus further studies are required using various AD techniques and on different populations to substantiate these findings. Funding: None. Context and Aims: In the United States, access to evidence‑based behavioral health treatment remains limited, contributing to inadequate treatment for individuals with depression and anxiety disorders. The Collaborative care model (CoCM), the integration of behavioral healthcare into primary care, has been shown to be effective in addressing this issue, particularly when delivered virtually through telehealth platforms. While collaborative care has been shown to be effective, little has been studied to understand the impact of patient treatment factors on patient improvement. This study aims to analyze factors associated with patient improvement, measured by PHQ‑9 and GAD‑7 score changes, in patients with depression and anxiety disorders from Concert Health, a national behavioral medical group offering collaborative care across 18 states. Methods and Material: Stepwise logistic regression models were utilized to identify factors influencing patient improvement in standardized symptom screener scores (PHQ‑9 and GAD‑7). Relevant patient‑level data, including demographics, clinical engagement, insurance type, clinical touchpoints, and other variables, were analyzed. Results are presented as odds ratios (ORs). Results and Conclusions: We find that increased clinical touchpoints were associated with improved outcomes in both depression (PHQ‑9) and anxiety (GAD‑7) populations. Commercial insurance was linked to a greater likelihood of improvement relative to Medicaid, and the use of C‑SSRS suicide screeners had varied effects on patient outcomes depending on the diagnosis. The duration of time spent in appointments showed a nuanced impact, suggesting an optimal length for touchpoints. Psychiatric consults also impact patient outcomes in both populations. This study sheds light on factors influencing patient outcomes in virtual collaborative care for depression and anxiety disorders, which may be used to inform and motivate further research and allow providers to better optimize and understand the impacts of treatment choices in collaborative care settings. Background: The escalating concern over Internet gaming disorder (IGD) among children underscores the urgency of comprehending its determinants and links to mental health, particularly for interventions targeting school‑aged children. Aim: This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence and determinants of IGD and its association with depression, anxiety, and behavior among 8–12‑year‑old children attending private schools in Salem city. Settings and Design: A cross‑sectional study involving 780 children aged 8–12 years from Salem district was conducted. Schools were randomly sampled, and data were collected through a self‑administered questionnaire. Materials and Methods: Data were gathered from children without genetic, systemic, or mental disorders and brain trauma. The questionnaire, adapted from Alhamoud M A et al. (2022), encompassed sections on sociodemographic characteristics, gaming behavior, and scales for assessing IGD, depression, and anxiety. Administration occurred during school hours with a 30–35 min completion time. Statistical Analysis Used: Data analysis utilized SPSS v23.0, including descriptive statistics, ANOVA, Chi‑square tests for intergroup comparisons, and Pearson’s correlation coefficient to determine associations. Results: The prevalence of IGD in Salem district was 1.2%, with higher rates of anxiety and depression observed among older children, particularly males. Conclusions: A positive correlation was evident between IGD, anxiety, and depression. Urgent preventive measures have to be warranted to curb the rising trend of IGD, such as limiting screen time and promoting outdoor activities to enhance children’s overall health. Background: Pharmacological methods, specifically sedatives, have gained popularity in managing the behavior of children during dental appointments. Aim: The aim of this study was to compare 1 μ/kg intranasal dexmedetomidine, 0.3 mg/kg intranasal midazolam, and nitrous oxide in evaluating the level of sedation, behavior of the child, onset of sedation, physiologic signs, and adverse effects. Materials and Methods: In this cross‑over trial, 15 children aged 6–8 years were randomized to receive intranasal atomized dexmedetomidine, intranasal atomized midazolam, and inhalation nitrous oxide at three separate visits. After administering the sedative agent, a single pulpectomy was performed during each appointment, and the outcomes were recorded. The washout period between each visit was 1 week. Results: All three sedative agents were equally effective in controlling overall behavior. Dexmedetomidine showed lower sedation level scores (agitated; score 9) than the other groups. There was a statistically significant difference in the onset of sedation, with dexmedetomidine having the longest onset of 36.2 ± 9.47 min. Coughing and sneezing were predominantly observed after administration of intranasal midazolam. Oxygen saturation levels were statistically lower in the intranasal midazolam group during local anesthesia administration and post‑treatment. Conclusion: 0.3 mg/kg intranasal midazolam is as effective as nitrous oxide sedation for controlling behavior and providing adequate sedation in pediatric dental patients. However, 1 μ/kg dexmedetomidine did not provide the same level of sedation and had a significantly longer onset. 0.3 mg/ kg intranasal midazolam is an effective alternative to nitrous oxide sedation in anxious children. Background: Decades of conflict and cycles of disasters in Afghanistan have caused enormous impacts on health, the economy, and even national security. Objectives: We aimed to assess the levels of depression, anxiety, and stress symptoms and their determinants among Afghan healthcare workers. Methods: A cross-sectional study of 830 Afghan healthcare workers working in public and private hospitals was conducted between May and July 2021. We employed a non-probability sampling method to select our subjects. The questionnaire was composed of sections on sociodemographic information, working conditions, and Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale-21 (DASS-21). Multivariable linear regression models were fitted using SPSS 21 to identify determinants of mental health symptoms among Afghan healthcare workers at a 5% significance level. Results: Of all participants, 52.3% (435) had symptoms of depression, 48.8% (405) anxiety, and 46.9% (389) stress. The likelihood of mental health symptoms was higher among those who worked in an urban setting (P = 0.001), were physically inactive (P = <0.001), had a decrease in income or an unpaid salary in the past six months (P = <0.001), thinking of leaving Afghanistan (P = <0.001), had medical comorbidity (P = <0.001), and being single (P = 0.048)]. Conclusion: This study highlights the important findings about the psychological health of healthcare workers in Afghanistan. Acute rheumatic fever (ARF) and rheumatic heart disease (RHD) are autoimmune conditions triggered by Group A Streptococcus skin or throat infections. If ARF/RHD is undetected, misdiagnosed or antibiotic treatment is not provided early, patients may develop cardiac failure, leading to premature death. Although it is an easily preventable disease, ARF/RHD remains the most significant cause of heart disease-associated deaths in people under 25 years old, both in low- and middle-income countries and among First Nations in high-income countries. Up to 30% of the patients with ARF/RHD present with a neurobehavioral condition – Sydenham's chorea (SC). The clinical course of SC is mostly self-limiting and is characterized by the onset of involuntary choreiform movements and neuropsychiatric features such as obsessive-compulsive disorder, tics, depression and anxiety, psychosis, and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder. While the precise mechanism as to why only a proportion of patients with ARF/RHD develop SC remains unknown, an impaired blood–brain barrier is considered to play a central role in its development. The most well-characterized neurobehavioral outcome is stroke which may occur in isolation or as part of systemic thromboembolism. Both infective endocarditis and mitral valve disease with or without aortic valve disease increase the embolic and ischemic stroke risk. ARF/RHD is known to significantly impact the quality of life with neuropsychiatric consequences. Another neurobehavioral syndrome which occurs in the absence of ARF/RHD is "pediatric autoimmune neuropsychiatric disorders associated with streptococcal infections" (PANDAS). PANDAS has been categorized as a subset of pediatric acute-onset neuropsychiatric syndromes. However, establishing a diagnosis of PANDAS has been challenging. In this review, we discuss the current status of our understanding regarding the different manifestations of poststreptococcal neurobehavioral changes. Particular attention is given to ARF/RHD-associated SC, and we highlight the areas for further research to understand the association between poststreptococcal sequelae and neurobehavioral abnormalities. Background: Previously, both psychological and yogic relaxation techniques have shown a reduction in anxiety and also an improvement in cognition and mental health. In authors' knowledge, no study has been conducted to assess the immediate effects of the Jacobson Progressive Muscle Relaxation (JPMR) on attention and psychological states. Hence, the aim of the present study was to assess the immediate effects of the JPMR and listening to Om Chanting on the attention and psychological states, i.e,., (i) happiness, (ii) anger, (iii) emotional stability, and (iv) positivity among university students. Design: The research design used in this study is a randomized controlled design. Materials and Methods: In the present study, 90 university students with ages 18--23 years (mean ± standard deviation: 21.5 ± 2.3 years) were randomized into three intervention groups, i.e,. JPMR, listening to Om Chanting and quiet sitting (QS) as a control group. The time duration for each intervention was 20 min. Each participant was assessed for (a) attention using six-letter cancellation test and (b) psychological states, i.e,. (i) happiness, (ii) anger, (iii) emotional stability, and (iv) positivity using the Visual Analog Scale, before and after all three interventions. Paired t-test was performed to compare before and after values of each variable of the participants. Results: Twenty-minute practice of JPMR improved psychological states such as (i) happiness (p < 0.05), (ii) emotional stability (p < 0.05), and (iii) positivity (p < 0.01). In addition, both attention and anger levels were reduced after 20 min of listening to Om Chanting (p < 0.01, respectively). In addition, QS reduced the attention level of the participants (p < 0.01). Conclusion: Findings of the present study suggest that the 20 min of practice of progressive muscle relaxation techniques as a psychological relaxation technique improves psychological states such as the levels of happiness, emotional stability, and positivity whereas 20 min of listening to Om Chanting showed a reduction in the scores of anger and attention. Background: Novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has led to a state of a public health emergency. As studied in earlier pandemics, awareness and perceived threats regarding an infectious disease play an essential role in instigating preventative measures. This study attempted to assess the association of age, gender, and education with awareness and perceived threat during COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: An online survey was conducted using a semi-structured questionnaire using a nonprobability snowball sampling technique, and a dataset of 1068 participants was analyzed. Results: Age was significantly correlated with awareness, anxiety, and threat, with a positive correlation observed for awareness and a negative correlation observed for an overall perceived threat. On the other hand, education was correlated significantly only with awareness, and this correlation was positive. Conclusions: This study aimed to determine the vulnerable population in terms of age, gender, and years of education. Background: Epilepsy is a chronic condition with numerous social and psychological consequences. There are numerous psychological and social factors associated with epilepsy, such as anxiety, depression, and stigma. These factors are prone to have poorer self-esteem, leading to lower quality of life (QOL). Purpose: The purpose of the current review was to identify the evidence on the effectiveness of psychosocial treatment programs in epilepsy aimed at enhancing the overall QOL in people with epilepsy. Methods: Various online databases such as Medline, PubMed, Science Direct, Wiley online library, and Google Scholar were searched to obtain the literature using appropriate search terms/keywords. A total of 68 articles with full texts were reviewed, of which 12 articles (11 randomized studies and 1 nonrandomized study) met the criteria and were included in the meta-analysis with a total sample size of 1712 participants. The methodological quality of the randomized studies was assessed by using the Cochrane Risk of Bias Tool. Results: Various psychosocial treatment programs significantly improved the QOL, self-management, and drug adherence and reduced stigma among persons with epilepsy. However, there was no evidence for effects on epilepsy self-efficacy, depression, anxiety, knowledge, and seizure frequency among persons with epilepsy. Conclusion: Planned psychosocial treatment programs showed significantly important benefit on a number of outcomes but found limited evidence in reducing anxiety, depression, seizure frequency, and improving knowledge among persons with epilepsy. Thus further research is needed to target those specific outcomes. Zoon's balanitis or balanitis plasmacellularis circumscripta is a chronic inflammatory disorder of the genital mucosa that can affect both males and females (Zoon's vulvitis). It is not a sexually transmitted disease but can still cause anxiety to the patients because of its chronic nature. Hence, proper diagnosis and early management are necessary. It is a clinical mimicker of other commoner genital dermatoses and is mostly a diagnosis of exclusion when other diseases have been ruled out. It is characterised by a well-demarcated shiny erythematous patch or plaque over the genital mucosa. Histopathological examination becomes necessary when we are unable to differentiate it from premalignant lesions. It reveals lozenge-shaped keratinocytes with siderophages, haemorrhages and variable plasma cell infiltrate in the dermis. Dermoscopy shows spermatozoa-like, convoluted vessels with structureless red orange areas. Response to topical therapy alone is not always satisfactory. Almost half of infertility cases involve male infertility. Understanding the consequence of a diagnosis of male infertility, as a sole or partial contributor to the couples’ infertility, to the mental health of men is required to ensure clinical care meets their psychological needs. The aim of this systematic analysis was to synthesize the evidence regarding whether men diagnosed with male factor infertility experience greater psychological distress than (1) men described as fertile and (2) men in couples with other infertility diagnoses. Online databases were searched using a combination of Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) headings and keywords relating to male infertility and psychological distress. The search yielded 1016 unique publications, of which 23 were included: 8 case–control, 14 prospective cohort, and 1 data linkage studies. Seven aspects of psychological distress were identified depression, anxiety, self-esteem, quality of life, fertility-related stress, general psychological stress or well-being, and psychiatric conditions. Case–control studies reported that men with male factor infertility have more symptoms of depression, anxiety and general psychological distress, worse quality of some aspects of life, and lower self-esteem than controls. When men with male factor infertility were compared to men in couples with other causes of infertility, there were few differences in the assessed aspects of psychological distress. Despite methodological limitations within the studies, this systematic analysis suggests that the experience of infertility, irrespective of its cause, negatively affects men’s mental health and demonstrates the need for assisted reproduction technology (ART) providers to consider men undergoing assisted reproduction as individuals with their own unique support needs. Background and Objectives: Coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19) pandemic has affected people all over the world and poses challenges to health-care services. Lockdown was first response strategy implemented by governments including India to prevent spread of coronavirus 2. The lockdown and anxiety among public had severely affected transfusion services. This paper analyses the impact of COVID-19 pandemic and lockdown on blood transfusion services. Methods: A retrospective analysis of the transfusion services for 5 months was carried out. The data regarding blood collections, blood donation camps, blood issued, and therapeutic plasma exchange (TPE) performed were collected and analyzed during 3 phases of the study period, i.e., phase 1 (pre-lockdown, 84 days), phase 2 (complete lockdown, 40 days), and phase 3 (partial lockdown, 28 days), and compared. Results: A significant drop (P = 0.010) was observed in blood donation from phase 1 to phase 2 but slight nonsignificant improvement was found from phase 2 to phase 3. The issue of blood was significantly reduced from phase 1 to phase 2 (P < 0.0001) and improved from phase 2 to phase 3 (P < 0.0049). There was a significant reduction (P < 0.00001 and 0.002) in patients referred for TPE during two phases of LD. Conclusion: There is significant decrease in blood supply and utilization due to pandemic and lockdown. An emergency blood management plan is required which can include donor education focusing to alleviate donor hesitation, relaxation to donor selection criteria, blood drive planning with inventory management and ensuring staff and product safety. Both popular and professional narratives during the COVID pandemic have focused on the perceived mental health needs of the population. Anxiety and distress have figured high in the list of mental health problems anticipated either during the crisis or in the aftermath. Some of this has been based on previous experience of disasters, but the current pandemic is unique in that there are no modern-day comparable equivalents. A number of cross sectional studies, many from China, have reported high levels of symptoms, particularly anxiety. However, the interpretation of these is difficult as it is not clear if the reported high scores on questionnaires translate into the presence of diagnosable mental disorders. By focusing on the population effects of the pandemic, we are in danger of neglecting the needs of the existing severely mentally ill. It is also becoming increasingly clear that the pandemic could continue for months or years. Existing mental health services have been badly affected by the ongoing lockdown. Considering that the treatment gap is already wide in India and resources stretched in meeting the existing needs, we cannot afford to lose the gains we have made in meeting the needs of people with severe mental disorders. This paper describes, in the light of an example from Kerala, how we can adapt to the changed circumstances without care being significantly compromised. It could also be that these changes forced on us now, could actually make the delivery of mental healthcare even better in future. The COVID challenge also provides opportunities for reform. Background: Health-care workers' psychological status is essential to Preventive control measures in a weak and unstable health system with poor infrastructural constraints. This study examines the psychological impact of the ongoing coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic on the health-care providers working in primary health-care settings in Sudan. Materials and Methods: This is a health facility–based cross-sectional study conducted in primary health-care units in White Nile State, Sudan. The psychological impact of stress and anxiety was determined using the Depression Anxiety Stress Scale 21 (DASS-21). A self-administered questionnaire measured depression, anxiety, and stress. The population of this study included health professionals working in health centers, including physicians, nurses, technicians, pharmacists, and other support staff. Results: A total of 167 health professionals were systematically recruited. The mean anxiety score in the study population was 8.26 & 9.0 (corresponding to mild anxiety). Participants without anxiety constituted 26.35% (n = 44) of the participants. Women were significantly more likely to be affected than men (P = 0.0). Age (21–40 years), female nurses, and other health-care workers (anesthesiology, public health, health education, occupational health, psychiatry, etc.) could be strong predictors of psychological disorders (P-value of 0.0). Conclusion: This study provided evidence for primary health care at its preparatory levels, as they are the first line of protection against the COVID-19 pandemic. Objective: To study the applicability of on table extubation (OTE) protocol following congenital cardiac surgery in a low-resource setting and its impact on the length of intensive care unit (ICU) stay, hospital stay, hospitalization cost, parental anxiety, and nurse anxiety. Materials and Methods: In this prospective, nonrandomized, observational single-center study, we included all children above 1 year of age undergoing congenital cardiac surgery. We evaluated them for the feasibility of OTE using a prespecified protocol following separation from cardiopulmonary bypass. The data were prospectively collected on 60 children more than 1 year of age, belonging to the Risk Adjustment for Congenital Heart Surgery 1, 2, 3, and 4 groups and divided into two groups: those who underwent successful OTE and those who were ventilated for any duration postoperatively (30 children in each group). Duration of hospital stay, ICU stay, and total hospital cost were collected. Anxiety levels of the primary caregiver (nurse) in the ICU and the mother were assessed immediately after the arrival of the child in the ICU using the State Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI). Results: Children who were extubated immediately following congenital cardiac surgery had significantly shorter ICU stay (median 20 [19, 22] h vs. 22 [20, 43] h [P < 0.05]). Patients extubated on table had a significant reduction in hospital cost {median Rs. 161,000 (138,330; 211,900), approximately USD 1970 (P < 0.05)} when compared to children who were ventilated postoperatively {median Rs. 201,422 (151,211; 211,900), approximately USD 2464}. The anxiety level in mothers was significantly less when their child was extubated in the operating room (STAI 36.5 ± 5.4 vs. 47.4 ± 7.4, P < 0.001). However, for the same subset of patients, anxiety level was significantly higher in the ICU nurse (STAI 46.0 ± 5.6 vs. 37.8 ± 4.1, P < 0.05). Conclusion: OTE following congenital cardiac surgery is associated with a shorter duration of ICU stay and hospital stay. It also reduces the total hospital cost and the anxiety level in mothers of children undergoing congenital heart surgery. Background: Breast cancer patients report difficulties with concentration, multi‑tasking, and memory. Cognitive dysfunction can impact the quality of life by affecting activities of daily living, treatment compliance, interpersonal relationships, and profession. Aims: The objective of this study was to evaluate and compare the cognitive functions and psychological complications in breast cancer patients with a control population. Settings and Design: This study was conducted in the outpatient department of Bharath Hospital and Institute of Oncology, Mysore, where the cases were recruited. The study participants were 110 female breast cancer patients and 100 noncancer healthy females as controls. Materials and Methods: Demographic details of the participants were collected through a questionnaire. Clinical data were obtained from clinical records. Tools used were Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA), Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAM‑D), and Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HAM‑A) to evaluate cognitive functions, depression, and anxiety, respectively. Statistical Analysis: The various findings were analyzed using mean, frequency, Pearson’s correlation, and two‑sample t‑test. Results: Mild cognitive impairment was observed in 88% of the cancer patients, and more than 95% were under severe anxiety and depression. There is a highly significant difference in all three tests (MoCA Test, HAM‑D test, HAM‑A test) with a P < 0.001. Background: Typical treatment of dural arteriovenous fistula (DAVF) emphasizes clinical procedures such as surgery, radiotherapy, and endovascular treatment. However, external factors of adverse psychological emotions in patients with DAVF before treatment have not yet been evaluated in a multicenter study. Objectives: This study aimed to fill the research gap regarding the effects of factors by evaluating the anxiety and depression status among patients with DAVF before and after endovascular treatment and identify factors influencing the development of anxiety and depression before their endovascular treatment. Methods: This retrospective study included 168 DAVF patients treated at two independent neurosurgical medical centers from December 2012 to December 2022. The Hamilton Anxiety Scale (HAMA) and Hamilton Depression Scale (HAMD) were assessed before and after endovascular treatment. Demographic and clinical data were also collected. Statistical tests were performed to calculate the proportion of DAVF patients with anxiety and depression. A multivariate analysis was conducted to identify independent risk factors for anxiety and depression in patients with DAVF before endovascular treatment. Results: A significant decrease in the percentage of patients with anxiety and depression was observed in patients after endovascular treatment compared with before treatment. Patients with DAVF who were at a higher risk for anxiety and depression were females had multiple visits, comorbid conditions, and a lower economic status and were presented with symptoms. Conclusion: After endovascular treatment, the anxiety or depression symptoms of DAVF patients significantly improved. Background: The multisystem associations between baseline mental health status and coronavirus disease-19 (COVID)-19 illness trajectory are uncertain. Objectives: This article will investigate the associations between baseline mental health status and disease trajectory following COVID-19 hospitalization, which may have implications for practice and future research. Methods: The Chief Scientist Office Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Imaging in severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) COVID-19 study is a prospective, observational, multicenter, longitudinal, secondary care cohort study that assessed the time-course of multi-organ injury in posthospital survivors of COVID-19. Patients were assessed in-hospital, at 28–60 days after discharge and in the longer term using electronic health record linkage. Results: One hundred and fifty-two patients (mean ± standard deviation [SD] age 54.3 ± 11.8 years, 43% female, 40% most socio-economically deprived quintile, 33% history of mental health history) were enrolled and had mental health serially assessed using the Patient Health Questionnaire-4 (PHQ-4) questionnaire. Fifty-three (35%) had PHQ-4 score of 6–12 consistent with moderate-severe symptoms of anxiety or depression and this was associated with diagnostic criteria for myocarditis (P = 0.0498). Moderate-severe symptoms of anxiety or depression were positively associated with higher perception of illness, lower health-related quality of life (HRQoL), and poorer physical function. The mean (SD) duration of follow-up after hospital discharge was 428 (86) days (range, 290–627 days). PHQ-4 score was not associated with clinical outcomes at follow-up. Conclusions: In patients who have been hospitalized with COVID-19, moderate-severe symptoms of anxiety or depression were associated with myocarditis, worse HRQoL, higher perception of illness, and lower levels of physical function.
