BACKGROUND: Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) has considerable relevance in neural growth and differentiation. It has been evaluated as a biomarker for individuals with various psychiatric disorders such as substance-related disorders and psychotic disorders. OBJECTIVE: The present study explored differences in the levels of BDNF (in serum) among subjects using cannabis (with and without schizophrenia). METHODS: This cross-sectional observational study compared the serum BDNF level in male subjects aged 18-45 years. Four groups of 20 subjects each were included: individuals with tobacco use disorder only, patients having schizophrenia, patients with cannabis use disorder, and finally patients with comorbid cannabis use disorder and schizophrenia. RESULTS: The BDNF levels were found to be significantly different across the four groups. The BDNF levels in subjects with concurrent schizophrenia and cannabis use disorder were higher than each of the other three groups (cannabis use disorder, schizophrenia, and tobacco use disorder only). CONCLUSION: We find that BDNF may be higher when cannabis use disorder and schizophrenia co-occur, as compared to either of the conditions alone. The findings should be interpreted with caution due to the low sample size and potential confounders. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Introduction: Perception of self is a primary source for fostering negative influences in an adolescent's life. This stage may increase the risk for various psychiatric disorders. Objectives: To assess the grade of anxiety and depression and to study their relationship with various factors of perception of self, among adolescent girls. Materials and Methods: School-going adolescent girls from two government schools at Lucknow were selected using a two-stage random sampling technique. A total of 200 participants were personally interviewed for their socio-demographic details, perception of self, and screened for symptoms of anxiety and depression. Results: Of the 200 school-going adolescent girls who participated in the study, 63.5% screened positive for the symptoms of anxiety and 73.0% for symptoms of depression. A total of 11.5% and 3.5% school-going adolescent girls had severe anxiety and major depression; severe severity, respectively. Both anxiety and depression among school-going adolescent girls were significantly associated with factors like possessing qualities that they are ashamed of (P = 0.005 and 0.011), body image dissatisfaction (P = 0.004 and 0.017), and getting suicidal thoughts in times of difficulties (P < 0.001). Conclusion: A fair number of adolescent girls had severe anxiety and major depression of severe severity. Therefore, adolescents must be screened for mental disorders from time to time and those at high risk must be identified. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aim: Occlusal splint treatment is commonly used to treat a variety of temporomandibular disorders (TMDs), with efficacy ranging between 70% and 90%. Centric splints are effective in relieving muscular soreness in individuals with TMD. Electromyography (EMG) quantifies muscle activity and can be used as an accessory diagnostic tool to evaluate the efficiency of the splint on the masticatory complex. Electromyography is used for assessing patients with TMD and observing muscle electromyography. TMD patients have altered electromyographic (EMG) masticatory muscle activity because of its change in electrical activity index or because of the compensatory mechanism for the disorder. Therefore, this study serves to evaluate the efficacy of the centric stabilization splint on TMD using EMG. Settings and Design: This cross-sectional study enrolled Ten TMD Patients with TMD, who underwent treatment with centric stabilization splint. Materials and Methods: The study involved ten young adults with TMD aged 18–45 years who were recruited without regard to sex, religion, caste, or socioeconomic background. The participants were randomized to receive a flat-contact upper stabilization splint and pregelled EMG electrodes to assess the immediate impact of centric splints on TMDs. After 3 months of follow-up, muscle activity and muscle symmetrical activity were measured to assess improvement in the symptoms of TMD. Statistical Analysis Used: The Shapiro–Wilk test was used to assess the normality of the variables’ distribution using SPSS 26.0. Symmetrical activity and treatment response were investigated using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test. Results: It showed an improvement in the temporalis, masseter, and sternocleidomastoid muscles’ resting EMG activity. A statistically significant improvement was seen in the EMG activity of the bilateral temporalis, right masseter, right sternocleidomastoid, and left digastric muscles while clenching. The masseter, sternocleidomastoid, and digastric muscles all displayed significantly enhanced symmetrical activity (P < 0.05). Conclusions: This research concludes that a centric stabilizing splint assists in relieving TMD symptoms. There was enhanced masticatory muscle activity both at rest and during function. Furthermore, there was an improvement in symmetrical activity of the masticatory muscles, which improved balance and enhanced the effective functioning of the masticatory complex. PURPOSE: The purpose was to study the anatomical and functional outcome following single low-dose suprachoroidal triamcinolone acetonide (LD-SCTA) (2 mg) injection in noninfectious posterior uveitis. METHODS: Eleven patients with macular edema (ME) more than 280 μ secondary to noninfectious uveitis were included in the study. A single LD-SCTA (0.5 ml) injection was performed in the study eye with the help of a novel suprachoroidal microneedle (Pricon, Iscon Surgicals, Jodhpur, Rajasthan, India). The study parameters were noted at 4 and 12 weeks post LD-SCTA injection. RESULTS: Ten of 11 patients had a significant decrease in central macular thickness (CMT). The mean CMT measurement at baseline was 513.6 ± 191.73 μm for the 10 patients who responded to the treatment, which reduced significantly to 265.1 ± 34.72 μm (P < 0.003) and 260.6 ± 34.72 μm (P < 0.002) at 4 and 12 weeks, respectively. The mean best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) at baseline was 0.84 ± 0.41 logMAR unit which improved to 0.52 ± 0.33 (P < 0.001) and 0.25 ± 0.22 (P < 0.000) at weeks 4 and 12, respectively. The mean intraocular pressure at baseline recorded was 16.36 ± 2.97 mmHg, 19.45 ± 4.80 mmHg (P = 0.06) at 4 weeks, and 17.27 ± 2.53 mmHg (P = 0.35) at 12 weeks. One eye which did not respond to LD-SCTA was a case of recurrent Vogt–Koyanagi–Harada disease. CONCLUSION: Single LD-SCTA injection is efficacious in reducing CMT in ME, improving BCVA, and controlling the inflammation in noninfectious posterior uveitis. LD-SCTA can be used as a first-line therapy in noninfectious uveitis over other routes of steroid administration with a favorable outcome and safety profile. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: To elucidate the clinico-epidemiologic characteristics of optic neuritis based on the status of serum aquaporin-4 antibody (AQP4-Ab) in patients with optic neuritis (ON).Methods: Medical records of 106 patients with ON and a follow-up of 3 years were reviewed. For each patient, the following data were extracted: medical history, findings of the ocular examination, brain, orbital or spinal MRI, and serological tests for AQP4. The ON was classified as typical or atypical based on disc examination and improvement in vision after intravenous methylprednisolone (IVMP). The clinical findings (typical or atypical), disease course, and outcomes were analyzed according to the serostatus of the ON.Results: 10 patients ((9.4%) were seropositive for AQP4-Ab; all had atypical ON. 96 patients (91%) were seronegative for AQP4-Ab: 36 atypical ON and 60 typical ON. Profound visual impairment at presentation was seen in all patients. However, at the end of the study period, seropositive and seronegative atypical ON had poor visual outcomes as compared to seronegative typical ON (P = 0.002). Five seropositive and four seronegative patients with atypical ON developed transverse myelitis. Bilateral disease with relapse was more in seropositive patients (80%); however, seronegative with atypical ON also had bilateral presentation and relapse in 42% and 41%, respectively. Conclusion: AQP4-Ab seropositive patients mostly present with atypical features such as bilateral recurrent ON, poor visual outcome, and increased incidence of transverse myelitis. However, atypical clinical features can also be seen in seronegative ON with a poor visual outcome and a recalcitrant course. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

Introduction: Colour changes of the luting material can become clinically visible affecting the aesthetic appearance of thin ceramic veneers. Therefore, unfortunately, the long-term success of veneers is tied to the colour stability of the luting agent used to cement them.Aim: To compare the colour stability of different resin cements and its influence on the final shade of overlying ceramic using two different thicknesses of ceramic.Material and Methodology: Sixty disc-shaped specimens of high translucency (HT) A2 shade of two thicknesses (0.5 mm & 1 mm) were prepared from lithium disilicate glass-ceramic. The discs of each thickness were further divided into three groups randomly depending upon the resin cements used. Group A - light cure resin cement - Variolink N LC by Ivoclar Vivadent in clear shade, Group B - base paste of dual-cure resin cement - Variolink N by Ivoclar Vivadent in transparent shade and Group C dual-cure resin cement - Clearfil esthetic cement EX by Kuraray in clear shade were used to compare their colour stability. A spectrophotometer was used for the colour measurements of the specimens before and after accelerated ageing. The colour stability was determined by colour differences (ΔE) using the coordinates L*, a* and b* in the pre and post accelerated ageing. Results: On comparing the three resin cements, Group A showed the lowest ΔE, whereas the highest ΔE was observed in Group B. This finding was constant for discs of both thicknesses. Conclusion: Even though statistically significant results were observed between the groups, they were not visibly differentiable. - Abstract
Cranial vault defects are either congenital or acquired in origin. Cranioplasty is most commonly done in patients after trauma, decompressive craniectomies, tumor resections, infections or because of congenital malformations. The purpose of a Cranioplast is to protect the underlying brain tissues, reduce pain, and to improve the calvarial contour, symmetry, and esthetics. Rehabilitation of these defects possesses a challenge to the surgical team and prosthodontist. With advancement in three-dimensional (3D) engineering technology, the use of rapid prototyping technology (RPT) can be used in the fabrication of 3D skull eliminating conventional impression for recording defect region. Custom-made cranial prosthesis now can be fabricated using the conventional method of wax-up and lost-wax method. Case 1 had a history of road traffic accident followed by decompressive craniectomy, which led to frontoparietotemporal defect of the right side. The 3D model was fabricated using RPT technology. The wax pattern fabricated on 3D prototyped skull was contoured using digital photographic superimposition method. Case 2 had a history of trauma on the head causing intracerebral hemorrhage followed by decompressive craniectomy which led to frontoparietotemporal defect of the right side. The 3D model was fabricated using RPT. The wax pattern fabricated on 3D prototyped skull was contoured using the compass method. The use of these methods with the added advantage of RPT resulted in prosthesis with good esthetics and better fit. The contour of the prosthesis was replicated in the same manner as compared to the contralateral side. These techniques are easy to use and are less time consuming and had few chances of errors. Malignant acanthosis nigricans (MAN) is a paraneoplastic dermatosis associated most commonly with an underlying intra-abdominal malignancy. It may manifest either with or before the development of the malignancy prompt diagnosis of such paraneoplastic syndrome is often instrumental in early diagnosis of occult malignancy. Palmar fasciitis and polyarthritis syndrome is a rare disease characterized by palmar fasciitis, symmetric synovitis of the hands, fibrosis, and flexion contractures. We present a case of a 48-year-old female who presented with complaints of bilateral contracture of hands with diffuse hyperpigmentation over body folds, face, and trunk suggestive of MAN. On investigation, she was found to have ovarian carcinoma. The hand contracture was thought to be due to palmar fasciitis with polyarthritis syndrome. The patient underwent total abdominal hysterectomy with bilateral total salpingo-oophorectomy with subtle improvement in acanthosis nigricans. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Sleep-disordered breathing (SDB), predominantly obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), is a frequent phenomenon in interstitial lung disease (ILD) and may be associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Methodology: A prospective, observational, hospital-based study was conducted in a tertiary care hospital after ethics committee permission. The study group consisted of 100 consecutive ILD patients diagnosed by a multidisciplinary diagnosis. They were evaluated for the prevalence of SDB with a polysomnography after a comprehensive history, detailed clinical examination, calculation of various pretest probability scores, and relevant prerequisite workup. Results: Out of the total 100 ILD patients, 44 were male (44%) and 56 were female (56%). SDB was present in 57 (57%) patients. Of these, 29 (29%) were found to have only nocturnal oxygen desaturation (NOD), while 28 (28%) had OSA. The 28 cases of OSA were distributed as 15 mild OSA (53.57%), 10 moderate OSA (35.71%), and 3 severe OSA (10.71%). The patients were divided into the following four groups: total study Group (A), patients with OSA (Group B), patients with NOD without OSA (Group C), and no SDB (Group D). The mean forced vital capacity values predicted in the four groups were 53.67%, 50%, 45.56%, and 57.87%, respectively. The mean body mass index in the four groups was 24.56, 27, 26.98, and 24.89 kg/m2, respectively. The mean 6-min walk distance in the four groups was 280.7, 250, 256.65, and 311.4 m, respectively. The mean partial pressure of oxygen in the four groups was 65.65, 60, 62.10, and 75.66 mmHg, respectively. The mean apnea-hypopnea index in the study group was 2.98/h, 8.6/h with mild OSA, 21.69/h with moderate OSA, 48.78/h with severe OSA, 3.89/h in patients having NOD without OSA, and 2.54/h in patients with no SDB. Conclusion: SDB in ILD is associated with a significant impact on the cardinal determinants of functional capacity, lung function, and quality of life. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a chronic respiratory disease characterized by the presence of persistent respiratory symptoms and airflow limitation due to airway and/or alveolar abnormalities owing to significant exposure to noxious particles or gases. Restricted activities of daily living as a result of reduced pulmonary function or dyspnea, impair quality of life in such patients. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in a tertiary care hospital of Lucknow with 250 COPD patients to assess their health-related quality of life (HRQOL) using the St. Georges Respiratory Questionnaire (SGRQ). Study participants were selected using a systematic random sampling method. Results: HRQOL of participants was significantly impaired. Employment status and airflow limitation severity of study participants had a statistically significant negative correlation whereas, duration since diagnosis of disease was seen to have a statistically significant positive correlation with SGRQ scores. Conclusion: COPD deteriorated the quality of life of patients. The activity score was the most affected. Urban residents had a comparatively poor HRQOL. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Warts are common cutaneous viral infection with a wide range of therapeutic modalities. Various agents have been tried for immunotherapy in warts. Objectives: Determine the role of intralesional and intradermal measles, mumps, rubella (MMR) vaccine in the treatment of common warts; to compare the efficacy of intralesional versus intradermal MMR vaccine. Methods and Materials: Patients diagnosed with verruca vulgaris were divided into two groups. In study group A, the individuals were injected with an intralesional MMR vaccine of 0.3 mL in the representative wart (largest) once in 3 weeks till there is complete clearance or maximum of four injections whichever is earlier, while in study group B, the individuals were injected with an intradermal MMR vaccine of 0.3 mL over the unilateral deltoid muscle area at similar intervals. Results: There were 33 patients in each group. In group A, 10 (30.3%) patients showed complete, 9 (27.3%) marked, 6 (18.2%) moderate, 3 (9.1%) mild, and 5 (15.2%) no response. In group B, seven (21.2%) patients showed complete, one (3.0%) marked, one (3.0%) moderate, four (12.1%) mild, and 20 (60.6%) no response. There were minimal side effects in the form of pain, erythema, itching at the injection site in a few patients, only one patient had syncope. Conclusion: We conclude that the MMR vaccine is an effective and safe modality of treatment for verruca vulgaris without any serious adverse effects. Also, the intralesional route showed better results in comparison to the intradermal route when we consider the treatment of a representative wart. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aim: The aim was to study the correlation of hepatic artery resistive index (HARI) with the portal pressure (PP) and its surrogate marker serum nitric oxide (NO) levels and to determine the validity of HARI as noninvasive indirect marker of PP in extrahepatic portal venous obstruction (EHPVO) pre- and postoperatively. Methods: A prospective study was conducted on 19 patients with EHPVO undergoing proximal lienorenal (LR) shunt or devascularization from February 2016 to January 2018. HARI, calculated from Doppler sonography, and NO were measured preoperatively and 14, 30 and 90 days postoperatively. Intraoperatively, PP was measured before splenectomy, and both PP and NO were measured postshunt. Results: Mean age was 10.58 ± 2.85 years, and male:female ratio was 15:4. LR shunt was done in 16 while three patients required devascularization. There was a significant fall in the HARI (0.06 ± 0.02, P = 0.02), NO (14.31 ± 2.66 μmol/l, P < 0.001), and PP (11.81 ± 1.03 mmHg, P < 0.001) following shunt surgery. However, fall in HARI did not correlate with fall in PP. Preoperative HARI also did not correlate with preshunt/devascularization PP nor with preoperative NO. Postoperatively, HARI did not correlate with NO at 14-, 30-, and 90-day follow-up. Conclusion: HARI bears no correlation with PP or NO. Hence, it cannot be used as an indirect marker of PP. - Abstract
Background: Implant success and survival rate ranges from 93% to 97%; however, failures are not very uncommon. These failures can be caused due to a variety of reasons out of which increased heat during drilling of osteotomies is a major contributor.Aim: The aim of this study was to develop a new generation diamond-coated drill and compare the thermal changes between commercially available drills and the experimental diamond coated drill during implant site preparation in artificial bone.Material and Methods: Three types of drills were selected for the study; Group A (Carbide), Group B (Stainless Steel), and Group C (Experimental). A total of 60 implant site preparations were performed with all the drills in artificial bone using a surgical unit linked to a testing device, in order to standardize implant drilling procedures. Bone temperature variations were recorded when drilling at a depth of 10 mm. A constant irrigation of 50 ml/minute and drilling speed of 800 r.p.m. was maintained. Results: The mean temperature of Group A, Group B, and Group C was 35.57°C, 36.83°C and 34.23°C, respectively. The results were assessed and statistically analyzed using ANOVA test and post hoc Bonferroni test. Statistically significant higher temperatures were obtained with stainless steel drill and carbide drill when compared with the experimental diamond coated drill. (P = 0.000).Conclusions: Diamond coated osteotomy drills have shown promising results in reducing heat generation at the osteotomy. Further studies need to be conducted to maximize the potential use of diamond as components of drills in implant dentistry. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

Hermansky-Pudlak syndrome (HPS) is an extremely subtile autosomal recessive disorder characterized by tyrosinasepositive oculocutaneous albinism (Ty-pos OCA), bleeding tendencies, and systemic complications associated to lysosomal dysfunction. The most grave complication of disease is interstitial lung disease (ILD) leading to irrevocable pulmonary fibrosis. Patients with HPS-1, HPS-2, and HPS-4 variants have a penchant to develop pulmonary fibrosis. The pulmonary involvement is characterised by progressive dyspnea hypoxemia respiratory failure and corpulmonale. The disease has an unfortunate prognosis with a high mortality rate and a poor quality of life. The options currently available in the therapeutic armamentarium are dismal with a dire need for opportune research. We hereby narrate an intriguing case scenario of a pair of siblings affected with this rare disorder with its associated ILD. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Caregivers of patients with alcohol and opioid use disorder (OUD) have low quality of life (QoL) and suffer from family stigma. However, impact of family stigma on QoL has not been studied in this population. Materials and Methods: One hundred primary caregivers of male inpatients with severe alcohol use disorder (AUD) (n = 47) and OUD (n = 53) as per the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5
th Edition were enrolled into the cross-sectional, descriptive study.Participants were assessed using sociodemographic and clinical proforma, World Health Organization QoL-BREF Hindi, and Hindi family stigma scale. Kolmogorov–Smirnov tests and Pearson's correlation were used for statistical analysis. Results: Majority of caregivers were females (64%), homemakers (48%), and married (80%). More than 50% of caregivers resided in rural areas and nuclear families. 46%, 30%, and 24% of caregivers were parents, wives, and siblings and children. Males, caregivers between 31 and 45 years of age, and married caregivers had significantly higher QoL. Parents had significantly lower QoL. Caregivers of patients with AUD had significantly lower overall QoL than that of OUD. Wives faced higher discrimination and overall stigma. Overall QoL, satisfaction with physical health, and environment were significantly negatively correlated with discrimination. Total stigma was negatively correlated with satisfaction with environment. Conclusion: Stigma and discrimination have negative impact on QoL of caregivers. Stigma reduction and QoL enhancement should be integral part of psychosocial interventions for caregivers of patients with AUD and OUD. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

Background: Steven-Johnson syndrome (SJS) is a serious disorder affecting the skin and mucous membrane, causing multiple flaccid bullae and purpuric rashes with sheet-like epithelial detachment including the ocular surface. The long-term outcomes following SJS are dismal and manifest as corneal vascularization, lid-wiper keratopathy, and severe dry eyes. The disease course can be modified if amniotic membrane graft is performed at the first week of disease, and the above-said complications can be avoided. This procedure thus not only decreases the morbidity but also improves the quality of life.Purpose: This video discusses the long-term sequelae of SJS which can be modified with timely intervention during the acute stage and thus significantly decreases morbidity.Synopsis: The video demonstrates the simple technique of amniotic membrane transplantation in the acute stage in SJS and its impact in long run.Highlights: There should be a low threshold for doing early amniotic membrane transplantation in patients with SJS with ocular surface involvement. Early intervention can change the disease course and decrease disease morbidity significantly.Video link: https://youtu.be/qgIiVcW56Oo. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

Objectives: To compare the relative axis modification and canal concentricity after glide path preparation with 20/0.02 hand K-file (NITIFLEX®) and 20/0.04 rotary file (HyFlex™ CM) with subsequent instrumentation with 1.5 mm self-adjusting file (SAF). Materials and Methods: One hundred and twenty ISO 15, 0.02 taper, Endo Training Blocks (Dentsply Maillefer, Ballaigues, Switzerland) were acquired and randomly divided into following two groups (n = 60): group 1, establishing glide path till 20/0.02 hand K-file (NITIFLEX®) followed by instrumentation with 1.5 mm SAF; and Group 2, establishing glide path till 20/0.04 rotary file (HyFlex™ CM) followed by instrumentation with 1.5 mm SAF. Pre- and post-instrumentation digital images were processed with MATLAB R 2013 software to identify the central axis, and then superimposed using digital imaging software (Picasa 3.0 software, Google Inc., California, USA) taking five landmarks as reference points. Student's t-test for pairwise comparisons was applied with the level of significance set at 0.05. Results: Training blocks instrumented with 20/0.04 rotary file and SAF were associated less deviation in canal axis (at all the five marked points), representing better canal concentricity compared to those, in which glide path was established by 20/0.02 hand K-files followed by SAF instrumentation. Conclusion: Canal geometry is better maintained after SAF instrumentation with a prior glide path established with 20/0.04 rotary file. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aim: To compare and evaluate the root reinforcement potential of four different intraorifice barriers: Mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA), resin-modified glass ionomer cement (RMGIC), fiber-reinforced composite (FRC), and nanohybrid composite (NC). Materials and Methods: Seventy-five mandibular premolars were decoronated to a standardized length, and prepared and obturated with gutta-percha and AH Plus sealer. Except for control specimens, the coronal 3-mm gutta-percha was removed and filled with different materials. The specimens (75) were divided into five groups (n = 15) on the basis of the intraorifice barrier material used. Group 1: MTA, Group 2: RMGIC, Group 3: FRC, Group 4: NC, Group 5: no barrier (control). Fracture resistance of the specimens was tested. Results: Fracture resistance of roots was significantly affected by the type of intraorifice barrier used and the following pattern was observed: RMGIC > FRC > NC > MTA. Conclusion: Intraorifice barriers can be regarded as a viable choice to reduce the occurrence of postendodontic root fractures. Among the four tested materials, RMGIC showed the maximum reinforcement. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and Reproductive tract infections RTIs are important public health problems in India. The prevalence of these infections is considerably higher among high risk groups (HRGs) ranging from 20-30%. It is high time that a study should be conducted to explore different factors and conditions responsible for the practice of unsafe sex among female sex workers (FSWs) in Uttar Pradesh (UP) and the impact of this on social life and health of FSWs. As Lucknow provides a comprehensive opportunity in terms of tourism, occupation, and economy, it becomes a potential hub for sex work. Studying FSW in Lucknow can thus be considered as a yardstick for the entire FSW population of UP population. The present study was thus planned with the objective of knowing the STI prevalence and its determinants among FSWs. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on FSWs registered with Targeted Intervention-Non-government Organization (TI-NGO), registered with Uttar Pradesh State Acquired Immuno Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) Control Society (UPSACS) of Lucknow city. Total 288 subjects were studied. Results: The average age of FSWs was 31 years. FSWs were mostly Hindus and illiterate. The overall prevalence of STI as per Syndromic diagnosis was found to be 35.8%. However, the percentage of FSWs with STI was higher in street-based (50.6%) than home-based (29.8%). Majority (42.7%) of sex workers with STI had non-regular partners only while majority (52.4%) of sex workers without any STI had only regular partners. Condom usage with regular partners was poor. However, with the non-regular partners the condom usage was better. On multivariate analysis being single, having sex work as a sole means of earning, duration of sex work > 2 years, having pallor, and giving in to client's demand for unsafe sex were found to be significant in causing STI. Conclusions: Prevalence of STI among the female sex workers as per Syndromic diagnosis was found to be 35.8%. Unemployment, anemia, and having sex without condom for extra money, failure to persuade the client and not doing anything were found to be important predictors for presence of STI. Background: Oral submucous fibrosis (OSMF) is always associated with juxtaepithelial infl ammatory reaction followed by fibroblastic changes in lamina propria, with epithelial atrophy leading to stiffness of oral mucosa and causing trismus and inability to eat. Mid upper arm circumference (MUAC) is a useful tool for a fast assessment of the nutritional status. Aims: The study was undertaken to evaluate the correlation of MUAC as a nutritional status indicator in OSMF patients. Patients and Methods: The study group comprised 50 clinically diagnosed and histopathologically confirmed cases of OSMF. MUAC was recorded using a plastic measuring tape. The right upper arm was measured at the midpoint between the tip of the shoulder and the tip of the elbow (olecranon process and the acromium). Results: Out of 50 subjects, 76% (38) were having MUAC value <23 cm, which shows an inverse relation between MUAC and clinical staging. The relation of MUAC with clinical staging was significant. Conclusion: The patient with OSMF becomes unable to eat due to burning, ulcers, and inability to open mouth, which affects the health of the individual. Thus, it is crucial to access the nutritional status to improve the survival rate of patients. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of this article is to present the use of spiral computed tomography (CT) in endodontic management of a mandibular molar with an unusual morphology of C-shape canal. An accurate assessment of this unusual morphology was made with the help of spiral CT. This report extends the range of known possible anatomical variations to include teeth with an abnormal number of roots and canals. This report also highlights the role of spiral CT, over conventional intra-oral periapical radiographs, as an objective method to confirm the three-dimensional anatomy of teeth.
