The objective of our study was to determine the incidence and risk factors of traveller’s thrombosis in Timisoara, Romania. During the period from January 2002 to January 2006 we studied 217 patients with suspected DVT, of which 153 were confirmed. Our study group consisted of 29 patients with confirmed DVT, with history of recent long-lasting travels by plane, car or by bus. 58.62% of patients were female patients. Additional risk factors were present in 28 (96.55%) patients from the study group. Thrombosis occurred mainly after travelling by bus (14 patients — 48.27%), by plane (9 patients — 31.03%) or by car (6 patients — 20.69%). No case of thrombosis after travelling by train was recorded. In 62.06 % of cases, the journey lasted for at least 12 hours, with the mean duration of 16.3 hours. Although the onset of clinical signs occurred after 12–24 hours (mean 14.3 hours), the mean interval that elapsed between travel and hospital admission was significantly higher, with a mean value of 5.1 (0–25) days, due lack of information among patients. The risk of DVT is increased by all types of travel. We found that DVT occurs more frequently after travelling by bus (48.27%) than travelling by plane or car. All patients should be informed about clinical signs of DVT, in order to avoid a long delay between onset of clinical signs and commencement of proper therapy.
