Experimental observations and theoretical arguments at Galaxy and larger scales suggested that a large fraction of the universe is composed by Dark Matter particles. This motivated the DAMA experimental efforts to investigate the presence of such particles in the galactic halo by exploiting a model-independent signature and very highly radiopure set-ups deep underground. Here, a review of the model-independent positive results, obtained by the DAMA set-ups at the Gran Sasso National Laboratory of the INFN, and some of the implications will be given.

A search for the β+β+, β+/EC, and EC/EC decays of 106Cd was performed at the Modane Underground Laboratory (France) located at a depth of 4800 m w.e. using a TGV-2 multidetector germanium spectrometer. A preliminary evaluation is performed of the experimental data accumulated during the measurements (12 900 h) of ∼13.6 g of 106Cd (with an enrichment of 75%) and the spectrometer background without samples and with samples of natural Cd. New limits (at a 90% confidence level) of half-lives are obtained: T 1/2 ⩾ 1.7 × 1020 yr and T 1/2 ⩾ 1.6 × 1020 yr for the 0νEC/EC resonant decay of 106Cd to the 2741 keV and 2718 keV excited states of the daughter nucleus 106Pd and T 1/2 ⩾ 4.2 × 1020 yr for the 2νEC/EC decay to the ground state of 106Pd (0+ → 0+, g.s.). The limits for other branches of the double beta decay of 106Cd with transitions to the ground and excited states of 106Pd are improved.

In the field of dark matter direct detection, on the one hand, it is predicted by theoretical models that many dark matter candidates and scenarios are possible. On the other hand, a variety of detectors has been proposed, but most of them — by the fact — are still at R&D stage. Such a situation leads to some considerations on technical aspects on dark matter direct detection.

Development of low radioactive technique allows to investigate many other rare nuclear and subnuclear processes: double [Formula: see text] decay, rare [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] decays, and to search for hypothetical particles and processes like axions, charge nonconserving decays, the nucleon, di-nucleon and tri-nucleon decays into invisible channels, to test the Pauli principle. Here, we present results of the rare processes searches and development of instrumentation for low counting experiments.

This has motivated the DAMA experimental efforts to investigate the presence of such particles in the galactic halo by exploiting a model independent signature with highly radiopure setups deep underground. In this paper, a review of the results obtained with the total exposure of 1.04 ton × yr collected by DAMA/LIBRA–phase1 deep underground at the Gran Sasso National Laboratory (LNGS) of the INFN during seven annual cycles is given. The DAMA/LIBRA–phase1 data give evidence for the presence of DM particles in the galactic halo, on the basis of the exploited model independent DM annual modulation signature by using highly radiopure NaI(Tl) target, at 7.5[Formula: see text] C.L. Including also the data of the first generation DAMA/NaI experiment (cumulative exposure 1.33 ton × yr, corresponding to 14 annual cycles), the C.L. is 9.3[Formula: see text] and the modulation amplitude of the single-hit scintillation events in the (2–6) keV energy interval is: (0.0112 ± 0.0012) cpd/kg/keV; the measured phase is (144 ± 7) days and the measured period is (0.998 ± 0.002) yr, values well in agreement with those expected for DM particles. No systematic or side reaction able to mimic the exploited DM signature has been found or suggested by anyone over more than a decade.

DAMA/NaI and DAMA/LIBRA data have allowed the study of several rare processes. In this paper, the results obtained for internal pair production in [Formula: see text]Am [Formula: see text] decay, charge not conserving electron capture in [Formula: see text]I and possible processes violating the Pauli Exclusion Principle are briefly discussed.

This paper gathers the main arguments and reasons which allowed one to exclude either systematic effects or side processes as possible sources of the annual modulation observed in the former DAMA/NaI and the latter DAMA/LIBRA–phase1 datasets.

An updated technical and methodological comparison of liquid noble gas experiments is presented with particular attention to the low energy physics application of double-phase noble gas detectors in direct Dark Matter investigations.

The discoveries, the developments and the studies that have been performed in the research of new materials and purification techniques, nowadays allow us a wide choice among inorganic scintillators for a variety of uses. In this paper the application of the inorganic crystal scintillators to direct dark matter investigation will be considered in more detail. The present framework of the detectors used at low energy for direct dark matter investigation also offers useful hints for further corollary developments.
