The cooperation between Research Infrastructures (RIs) and industry plays a crucial role in achieving scientific excellence and fostering innovation potential. However, the level of cooperation and its challenges remain less defined and monitored. To address this, ESFRI conducted a report on RI cooperation, exploring existing documents and conducting surveys with RIs. The findings highlight the need for policy actions to enhance mutual benefits and overcome barriers such as different mindsets, access rules, and intellectual property rights. Understanding RIs' potential to assist industry and society is vital for optimal resource allocation and successful cooperation. The report emphasizes the importance of strategic analysis and ESFRI's role in defining the space for cooperation between RIs and technology infrastructures (TIs) to increase impact. The recommendations provided serve as a valuable input for advancing the RI-Industry cooperation landscape.

This document outlines detailed information on stakeholder engagement activities within the ALL-Ready project. The objective of the stakeholder engagement plan is to guarantee a coordination and alignment of stakeholder engagement during all project activities.

This paper, prepared by the ALL-Ready consortium, has the aim to lay a conceptual and operational framework for the future European partnership entitled: “Accelerating farming systems transition: agroecology living labs and research infrastructures”. It sets out the key principles, concepts, and criteria featuring the role of place-based open innovation arrangements as exemplified by living labs (LL) and shared research infrastructures (RI) to accelerate agroecology transition. As such, it is the foundation for the preparation of the partnership and for the partnership itself.

The purpose of this report is to provide a synthesis of drivers of agroecology transition based on interviews with key informants in 23 different European countries.

This document lists criteria and indicators to identify organisations for possible inclusion in the future Network of living labs and research infrastructures for an agroecology transition in Europe. The criteria and indicators seek to be applicable to a range of organisations that could strengthen the transition to agroecology in Europe.

This document provides an assessment of the progress from 2020-2023 in developing FAIR data policies within ENVRI-FAIR environmental research infrastructures. In particular, it is a comparison with D4.2 which provided the initial landscape survey is given. The text describes the progress made in advancing ENVRI research infrastructures towards FAIRness, and the diagrams provide ‘heat maps’ where the colour indicates the state. The conclusion is that much progress has been achieved, but – as always – there is more that could be done, with varying amounts to be done in the different RIs. It is of particular importance that progress on the ‘legal policies’ has been rapid and is almost completed for the RIs of ENVRI.

This deliverable provides an overview of relevant developments in the practices and technologies that support making research assets findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable, especially where these are relevant for the ENVRI cluster of environmental research infrastructures. A review of selected initiatives and associated technologies is provided with some context for their relevance to the ENVRI community, especially those that are represented within the ENVRI-FAIR consortium.

This is the final deliverable of WP6, the training and capacity building work package of ENVRI-FAIR. The objectives of WP6 were to provide training to ENVRIs and key ENVRI stakeholder groups about the FAIR principles, how to implement these in practice in RI services and data management activities at data centre level, how to evaluate the degree of implementation using FAIR metrics, as well as relevant legal and policy requirements. This deliverable report summarises the activities we have undertaken, with special focus on the preparation and running of training events aimed at the ENVRIs’ data centre staff. We also describe the infrastructure that was developed to provide a comprehensive Learning Environment for the ENVRI Community, including a catalogue, learning platform and repository and the Training Gateway component of the ENVRI-Hub. Finally, the report also contains an extensive discussion of “lessons learned” that we hope will be of use for future ENVRI Community training activities.

ENVRI-FAIR is working towards the integration of (meta)data and service flows across the different environmental research infrastructures and to enhance the FAIRness of their (meta)data and services and enable efficient linking to EOSC. In this respect, FAIR Convergence of the participating research infrastructures will enable a tight integration of services and datasets from the participating ENVRIs, to the benefit of various stakeholder categories. Convergence, both technological and conceptual, will support integration with the European Open Science Cloud. The current report D5.6 on Synthesis and outlook evaluates the current status of the FAIR convergence efforts done on the subdomain and cluster level and provides strategic recommendations for the future developments of the ENVRIs and the ENVRI-Hub.

The aim of this poster is to provide an overview of the work carried out in the CLS INFRA project and its conclusions for the field of Computational Literary Studies.

The overarching goal of ENVRI-FAIR is for all participating RIs to improve their FAIRness and prepare the connection of their data repositories and services to the European Open Science Cloud. This deliverable reports the efforts Task 7.3 contributed to the development of common FAIRness goals in the second half of the project. The objective of this task is to provide co-development support driven by an implementation plan that identified by each subdomain, joint use cases among RIs or subdomains, and other needs identified during the project. In the second half of the project, Task 7.3 focused on the support for the integration with ENVRI-Hub, testing and validation of the developed services by subdomains, and exploitation and knowledge transfer.

This document presents the policies planned for the ENVRI-Hub service catalogue within the context of interoperation with EOSC and the FAIR principles. The ENVRI-Hub catalogue is supplied by the Research Infrastructures within ENVRI-FAIR (or more specifically their digital asset suppliers) and so it is necessary for the policies of the RIs to be sufficiently compatible to avoid problems of conflicting policies when accessing digital assets at the RIs from the ENVRI-Hub. The key policy drivers (EOSC Rules of participation, FAIR principles, and ENVRI-Hub initial documents) were documented in D4.6 where policy recommendations for the RIs were made, in order for their policies to be compatible with ENVRI-Hub and hence EOSC and FAIR. The next steps to create policies for the ENVRI-Hub were also documented in D4.6 following ENVRI-FAIR Policy workshop 4 where the approach was discussed. While ENVRI RIs are finalising their policies and their implementation through guidelines (best practice) and IT implementation (technology) this deliverable lays out the policies needed at ENVRI-Hub and the steps to realisation.

The ENVRI-FAIR project activities have clearly improved the FAIRness of the data collected by the Ecosystem and Biodiversity RIs and the level of cross-RI collaboration. With a long-term plan, the RIs must have also a trajectory in terms of long-term collaboration, consolidation and management that should be also based on the experience in ENVRI-FAIR. In this deliverable an analysis of the possible common development paths, complementarities and specific long-term use cases are presented and prepared for a discussion among the RIs’ legal entities.

The report summarises the collaboration between the environmental research infrastructures cluster and other ESFRI clusters during the conduction of the project.

The overarching goal of ENVRI-FAIR is for all participating RIs to improve their FAIRness and prepare the connection of their data repositories and services to the European Open Science Cloud. With the development of FAIR implementations from the participating RIs and integrated services among the environmental subdomains, these data and services will be brought together at a higher level (for the entire cluster), providing more efficient services for researchers and policy makers. This deliverable presents new developments to the knowledge base, initially presented in the ENVRI-FAIR Deliverable 7.3. The new developments focus on the knowledge base search engine. We introduce a new automated pipeline to index online resources: web pages, datasets, and computational notebooks. We also present a complete redesign of the search engine and interface. These new features were deployed in a cloud environment, making the service more performant and reliable. We also discuss the integration with the ENVRI community through the ENVRI-Hub and show a demonstration of the new search engine. By allowing users to find resources from ENVRI and its RIs, the knowledge base search engine improves interoperability.

D4.3 Report on legal and IPR aspects of service policies in the ENVRI domain describes the policy issues facing ENVRI RIs and in particular the state of plan and plans for progress. The deliverable relies on earlier deliverables, particularly D4.2 which provided the landscape analysis and the ongoing D4.5 updating the policy landscape together with the policy aspects of external development of FAIR services in the deliverable D4.4. It also benefits from the work done on methods for generating policy and maintaining policy consistency both with external factors (e.g., legislation) and the requirements and constraints of individual RIs to be reported in D4.6 and D4.7. The co-evolution of policy among the ENVRI RIs is as essential to interoperability as the technical co-evolution managed in WP5 and WP7, together with the individual ENVRI subdomains in WP8, 9,10 and 11.

The BEERi activity report summarizes the activities of the Board of European Environmental Research Infrastructure within the lifetime of the ENVRI-FAIR project. It provides an overview of the main common topics tackled within the BEERi and taken actions regarding them, illustrating the cooperation of the Community of the environmental RIs.

This Deliverable provides an assessment of the level of FAIRness of the seven RIs in the Biodiversity and Ecosystem subdomain. The assessment has been done by taking advantage of the FAIR Implementation Profiles, resulting from the collaborative effort between the GO-FAIR Foundation and ENVRI-FAIR WP5. In this report the outcome for the FIPs compiled by the RIs belonging to WP11 is discussed in more detail. A final chapter is dedicated to the evolution of the FIPs along the four years of the project.

The ENVRI landscape report for National Stakeholders summarizes the outcomes of the interviews that were conducted with five different national stakeholders within the environmental domain in Europe. The report addresses awareness of the ENVRI work and activities in different countries and particularly the ways the national ENVRIs are organized and coordinated currently. Most importantly, the report sums up how countries see the significance of aligning national strategies with the strategies at European level, and what are the related challenges and means of improving the alignment.

This workshop aims at supporting researchers interested in creating a workflow in the SSH Open Marketplace, to share best practices methods with the community. Selected participants will be supported by the members of the Editorial Board of this discovery portal to write and document their research scenarios.

The ENVRI-Hub design study contains the analysis of the technical preconditions for the successful implementation of the design ENVRI-Hub as a centralised access interface to environmental data and services building upon the increase of FAIRness achieved in the ENVRI-FAIR project; it will be based on the validation results from WP7 and Task T5.4, and the achievements in the subdomain implementation work packages WP8-11 of this project. The design of the ENVRI-Hub started as a multifaceted initiative that brought together engineers, scientists, and managers to create a collaborative platform for environmental research and innovation, aiming at advancing environmental research in Europe. As a web platform, the ENVRI-Hub can provide access to environmental data and services offered by the European environmental Research Infrastructures. The data and services provided by the ENVRIs cover four domains of the Earth system, Atmosphere, Ocean, Solid Earth, and Biodiversity-Ecosystems. The ENVRI-Hub intends to facilitate multi-and-inter-disciplinary environmental research by making the data and services interoperable across the domains and easy to use by anyone in the ENVRI community. From different perspectives, depending on the role and interest of the user, the ENVRI-Hub encompasses various aspects, including technical considerations, scientific content, usability, and strategic management. This document describes the process of designing the ENVRI-Hub during the ENVRI-FAIR project, highlighting the key challenges and achievements as well as the potential of an operational ENVRI-Hub in the future.

In this deliverable we produce a list of services developed by Biodiversity and Ecosystems subdomain RIs. The services we considered were developed or utilised during the ENVRI-FAIR project in order to increase the interoperability and the co-development of service among different RIs of the subdomain.

This deliverable showcases the progress and demonstrators of services integration between the ESFRI Cluster of Environmental Research Infrastructures and the European Open Science Cloud. It highlights the successful onboarding of the ENVRI Catalogue of Services onto the EOSC Marketplace, improving visibility and accessibility. Ongoing discussions with OpenAIRE aim to enhance the discoverability of ENVRI digital assets within EOSC. The document emphasises the importance of harmonisation, interoperability, and collaboration in achieving seamless integration and maximising the impact of environmental research infrastructures.

This strategy report provides a comprehensive understanding of the connection between European Environmental and Earth System Research Infrastructures and European Open Science Cloud. It aims to define and clarify the relationship between these two entities, highlighting the significance of their collaboration and integration. It focuses on participation in EOSC projects, integration with EOSC architecture, compliance with FAIR Principles, collaboration with EOSC Association, visibility and recognition of ENVRI within the EOSC ecosystem and capacity building and training

The Impact Assessment is an important part of the policy-making process, as it helps in evaluating the potential effects of proposed policies on various stakeholders and making informed decisions about whether to adopt, modify, or reject a proposed policy. It also helps to communicate the benefits of any public investment to society. For these reasons, its importance has grown over recent years, and the Research Infrastructure (RI) policy domain is no exception. The topic has been recognised in ESFRI’s White Paper (2020), where the countries were invited, with support from ESFRI and Horizon Europe, to incentivise RIs to monitor their societal and economic value and impact. Furthermore, the ESFRI Strategy working groups have organised two conferences on this topic (2018 and 2020). Impact assessment is also beneficial for RIs if used to assess and improve the functioning of an RI. It contributes to the strategic planning of an RI, reflecting on internal resource allocation and leading to constant improvement and focussing of services according to the needs of users and other stakeholders. It creates accountability and transparency and hence gives legitimacy, visibility and value to the existence of an RI. Recently, the Competitiveness Council have asked “ESFRI to look into the approaches by Member States, the Commission, international organisations and RIs to assess scientific, societal and economic impacts of investments in RIs, identify good practices, develop a monitoring framework, test it and elaborate recommendations to national and regional RI stakeholders by the end of 2023”. ESFRI has responded to this request by setting up a drafting group tasked with preparing the report based on information collected from literature, surveys and consultations with the ESFRI member countries and RIs. This report highlights the importance of understanding the differences between performance monitoring, which ESFRI started implementing last year, and impact assessment (IA), ex-ante or ex-post, for research infrastructures (RIs). It provides recommendations to stakeholders, policymakers, funders, governments, RIs, ESFRI, and the EC.

The Deliverable "D5.4 ENVRI Service Catalogue" presents the development, implementation, and operation of a comprehensive service catalogue within the context of the ENVRI-FAIR project. The deliverable outlines the creation of a FAIR compliant and EOSC-ready catalogue, primarily focusing on services providing access to data. The innovative design and implementation of the catalogue embrace the adoption of rich metadata standards for ingestion and storage, namely EPOS-DCAT-AP metadata profile and the CERIF model, facilitating the description of diverse services across different research infrastructures (RIs). The validation processes, including service validation at the subdomain level, FAIRness evaluation, and an implementation phase, ensure the robustness, accuracy, and FAIR compliance of the catalogue, promoting its interoperability with the EOSC catalogue. The deliverable further details the operation of the catalogue, which involves a harmonised effort among service providers, backend developers, and front-end developers. It underscores the ongoing endeavour to ingest more metadata records, provide support for metadata curation, and work towards semantic interoperability. Future work, as outlined in the deliverable, involves enhancing the catalogue's operation by improving metadata quality, enhancing semantic interoperability, and adapting to the diversity of service types from different RIs. The ENVRI Service Catalogue represents a pivotal step towards advancing FAIR practices in environmental research. Its development, implementation, and operation symbolise an ongoing commitment to continuous improvement, adaptation, and learning, with the ultimate goal of propelling environmental research towards new horizons of discovery and innovation. By aligning with the EOSC catalogue requirements, it envisions a broader, more integrated network of scientific resources, thus empowering global researchers. The ENVRI Service Catalogue, as the embodiment of the ENVRI-FAIR project's vision, promises to facilitate open, FAIR, and efficient access to services and data in the environmental research domain.

This report presents a synthesis of the progress of FAIRness for the atmospheric subdomain in the project with links to relevant documents. Furthermore, the report provides a strategy for the future development of the atmospheric subdomain and common recommendations to consolidate the atmospheric subdomain contribution beyond the ENVRI-FAIR project.

This research analyses the European Research Infrastructure Consortium (ERIC) and on the research communities that take part in them. In particular, it examines the case study of the DARIAH-ERIC, the Research Infrastructure for the (digital) Arts and Humanities, and its Working Groups. These are communities of researchers gathered around similar research interests with the aim of providing concrete solutions to scholarly challenges. This doctoral thesis investigates collaborative practices taking place in the DARIAH Working Groups, by focussing on the epistemic and socio/political dynamics created by the interaction of practices and governance models proper of Research Infrastructures and research Communities. Finally, this research asks, do Research Infrastructures encourage collaboration among researchers? In this dissertation, I couple an institutional perspective - which has deeper roots in the field of Research Policy - with a research methodology (including ethnographic methods) originating in the Philosophy of Science and Social Epistemology. Drawing on existing literature and empirical research, I identify the concept of co-creation as central in dynamics of knowledge creation in Research Infrastructures. Concluding, I argue that within Research Infrastructures, co-creation becomes societally and culturally relevant because of its crucial role in knowledge and technology transfer between stakeholders: as an example, the DARIAH Working Groups connect several actors, such as researchers, research managers, policymakers or citizens, from different disciplines and background, and provide an answer to concrete social or scholarly challenges.

ENVRI-FAIR is the connection of the ESFRI Cluster of Environmental Research Infrastructures (ENVRI) to the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC). The high-impact ambition of ENVRI-FAIR is to establish the technical preconditions for the successful implementation of a virtual, federated machine-to-machine interface to access environmental data and services provided by the contributing ENVRIs. This interface is called the ENVRI-Hub. Full integration of services across RIs and even subdomains is continuously progressing at ENVRIs with focus on environmental data and scientific research objectives. Each RI is specialized in a specific number of parameters related to its specific competences. For users that require a broader or the full spectrum of environmental parameters, the ENVRI-Hub will offer a platform that reflects the complexity and diversity of the ENVRI landscape, while preserving their specific structures and addressing the requirements they were designed for. The ENVRI-Hub will be a federated system of harmonized subdomain/RI-specific systems of data policies and management, access platforms and virtual research environments. The system will be completely open source, modular and scalable and build on the experience available in the consortium and already operational systems. Figure 1 shows the key features of the ENVRI-Hub. The ENVRI-Hub community metadata and data store is foreseen to be based on semantic web technology, ontologies, and open linked data, allowing integration of the vocabularies and metadata standards developed in the implementation work packages of ENVRI-FAIR. The cross-subdomain development will create large benefits in efficiency and robustness of the ENVRI-hub system. It will enable true interoperability of access to metadata and data objects across the RIs and subdomains and thus facilitate the development of (joint) higher-level services. By following a strict modular design, the developments can be (re-)used in the different RIs. All components should contain couplers to the EOSC services, like AAI, data storage solutions and catalogue of services, to enable the seamless integration of ENVRIs data and services into EOSC., The authors of this report were supported by the whole ENVRI-FAIR Task Force 6 Team.

The report provides the scope of the sustainability for the data management of the Marine subdomain, for the research infrastructures themselves and with respect to their contributions to ENVRI-FAIR and EOSC. Recommendations to consolidate the sustainability of the Marine subdomain contribution to EOSC beyond the ENVRI-FAIR project and the RI services are proposed.

FOSSR - FOSTERING OPEN SCIENCE IN SOCIAL SCIENCE RESEARCH AIMS AT RAISE AWARENESS AND ENHANCE UNDERSTANDING OF DATA AND METHODOLOGIES WHILE PROMOTING FAIRNESS PRINCIPLES IN ITALY'S SOCIAL SCIENCES RESEARCH KEY HIGHLIGHTS Integrating Renowned Research Infrastructures FOSSR collaborates with three prestigious research infrastructures - CESSDA-ERIC, SHARE-ERIC, and RISIS - to establish a framework of tools and services, amplifying the impact of Open Science in Italy's social science academic community. CESSDA ERIC is an European consortium that brings together social science data archives to support high-quality research. The consortium provides researchers with resources, tools, and diverse datasets for conducting social science research. Italy's membership in CESSDA by 2021 strengthens collaboration and knowledge exchange in advancing social sciences. SHARE ERIC conducts the largest social science panel study in Europe, focusing on individuals aged 50+ in 27 European countries and Israel. The survey comprehensively examines economic, social, health, and well-being conditions, providing extensive data on European citizens. SHARE's data empowers policymakers to address socio-economic and public health challenges, improving the overall living situation of Europeans. RISIS provides data and services for studying science, technology, and innovation processes in R&I policy studies. Italian nodes - EFIL, JOREP, CHEETAH, VICO - offer respectively databases on research funding, joint R&D programs, mid-sized firms, and start-ups. These resources enable the development of analytical tools to analyze research, innovation, and industry dynamics. Advancing Open Science Practices FOSSR establishes a centralized knowledge-sharing platform and streamlined access to essential resources. Researchers and policymakers gain access to curated data and tools, fostering Open Science practices and driving impactful research outcomes. Sustainable Infrastructure for Long-Term Impact The network of research infrastructures, connected to energy-efficient data centers through an Open Cloud, ensures lasting sustainability. With optimized workflows, efficient cooling, and remote work capabilities, FOSSR empowers researchers with ample computing resources for further research and innovation. A new generation of Researchers By investing in skilled professionals and providing resources, FOSSR will drive cutting-edge advancements in data science. This document presents the move from a theoretical policy framework, derived from Workshop 1 and discussed at Workshop 2, towards a practical implementation of policy. It starts with the analysis of key policy drivers (EOSC Rules of participation, FAIR principles and ENVRI-Hub initial documents) in the respect of organisational decisions (“Policy drivers”) needed from an ENVRI RI. The document collects these main policy statements (i.e., the “core” of the policy documents) into a draft framework, including other implied policies derived from the core requirements. The document also includes considerations of differences between Policies, Practices (Guidelines) and Technologies (IT Implementation) in Research Infrastructure management and maintenance, as well as some common requirements for interoperable and documentable policy documents. To move from this position to a practical implementation, Workshop 3 demonstrated how we can create policies (and subsequently guidelines and IT implementation) starting from the policy statements but creating policy documents. The policy documents of various RIs were compared, and the policy document template of EPOS, together with other examples, informed the discussion. In parallel, a landscape analysis leading to D4.5 should provide a state-of-the-art view across the participating RIs, from which policies suitable for the ENVRI-Hub (to interoperate across ENVRI RIs and also with EOSC) and their congruency can be analysed. Due to the delays with D4.5, this deliverable documents the path to draft policies for the ENVRI-Hub. In Workshop 4 (which leads to D4.7) these results will be discussed and the move to the final ENVRI policies planned.

This Deliverable provides an overview of the ongoing data FAIRness implementation within the Biodiversity and Ecosystem subdomain, also in relation to the overall ENVRI FAIR project developments. Considering the central role assumed by the WP5 Task Forces within the project, the current compliance of the subdomain RIs with Task Forces recommendations has been analysed, through a specific questionnaire administered to all subdomain RIs. Considering this survey results, single RI roadmaps are presented to fill the current gaps. A particular focus is finally reserved to the ongoing subdomain use cases, which are considered a key step in developing interoperability within the subdomain.

This deliverable provides the “The FAIRness of SIOS” and refers to the status of the implementation in relation to the updated, 2nd version of the implementation plan from September 2021. This includes the implementation of services for meta data and data access including machine-to-machine interfaces within the ENVRI hub, and outside, utilising e.g., vocabulary and ontology specifications. It summarizes the FAIR implementation plan, the progress on FAIRness and the remaining tasks for SIOS. The main achievements are listed and an outlook on the next 5 years is given.

This report has been prepared as part of the regional impact of large-scale research infrastructures (RIs) study agreed between the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) and the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) (deliverables LSE-RD 1.4 and 1.5). This document outlines a novel framework to identify and estimate the regional economic impacts that a new particle-collider-based research infrastructure set up as a globally distributed project can create through their procurement.To test the validity of this new approach and estimate the potential regional and local economic impacts of RI procurement, this report examines the effects of a technology of relevance for the Future Circular Collider (FCC): superconducting radiofrequency cavities (SRF). To evaluate the regional impacts of this technology, this study uses the European X-ray Free Electron Laser (XFEL) facility in Germany as a case study. This project involved the largest deployment of superconducting radiofrequency cavity technology to date. Schio, a municipality in Italy where one of the two suppliers for this procurement contract is located, is the focus of the analysis. By studying the local economic impact of SRF procurement by XFEL, this report can estimate real world (i.e. non-simulated) counterfactual (i.e. over and above what would have happened in the local economy without such SRF procurement contract) effects, offering insights on the regional and local impacts of future FCC high-tech industry procurement for this and other, comparable technologies. This study provides new evidence on the positive local impact of RI procurement.This report finds that the high-tech procurement contracts for a large-scale scientific project positively affected manufacturing employment in the supplier's municipality well beyond the boundaries of the procurement contract with effects beyond the firm that received the contract.Every new employee that the supplier added to its internal workforce to fulfil the contract supported 15 additional manufacturing jobs outside the firm’s boundaries. In monetary terms, eachone million euros spent on procurement supported additional 11 manufacturing jobs in the supplier’s municipality. As a result of this contract,the number of manufacturing employees in Schio was 7% higher than it would have been in the absence of SRF procurement. The results of this report suggest thatthe positive employment effect remained concentrated within the industrial manufacturing sector.The effect was geographically concentratedwithin the municipality of Schio. This report focuses on a large high-technology-intensive contract.The advantage of the proposed approach to the estimation of the local impacts of RI procurement is that it can be applied to other technology procurement cases to better understand the heterogeneity of such effects. For example, it can be used to understand how different technologies, different contract volumes and different technology intensity would impact the local economy in which the supplier is located in different ways. The results indicate that the employment effect on the local economy of RI procurement contracts is significant, can be large and should be considered when making investment decisions for an FCC project.

This report is Deliverable 7.1 “Report on the methodologies used to identify in-pipe defects” of the Co- UDlabs project, which is funded under the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme via Grant Agreement No 101008626. The Deliverable is an output from Work Package 7, “Asset Deterioration”. The University of Sheffield (UFSD). UFSD is the author of this deliverable. The report describes current defect inspection and classification methodologies and provides a review of their effectiveness. The report argues that historically there has been a strong linkage between the development of international and national defect classification systems and sewer inspection approaches. A state-of-the-art review of commonly used inspection technologies is provided. The potential for newer emerging inspection technologies is also described and discussed. These new approaches are being developed to (i) reduce cost so as to allow the wider use of sewer inspection and (ii) gather more physically relevant information about in-sewer defects so that more physically based pipe deterioration models can be developed, and (iii) to provide inspection data with less uncertainty. If improvements in inspection approaches could be achieved it would allow water utilities to better focus investment for sewer rehabilitation and renewal and also more rapidly identify operational issues that cause system failures such as flooding and the release of untreated wastewater via sewer overflows. Different sources of information were considered: (i) a search of academic and governmental agency sources – peer reviewed outputs; (ii) search of documentation from other sources that had not been reviewed; and (iii) information from commercial sources, mainly companies providing in-pipe inspection services. This review has shown that CCTV based inspection currently still dominates sewer inspection, despite the recognition that there is significant uncertainty and cost associated with human based analysis of CCTV images. Different technologies have been developed and deployed to identify defects that are difficult to identify using visual means and that also allow for larger proportions of sewer networks to be inspected. The review has also shown the benefits of multi-sensor approaches when identifying and characterising sewer pipe defects. Emerging inspection technologies can be organised into 3 groups: new sensing technologies, autonomous, multi-sensor inspection platform and adaptation of AI based approaches to better identify and characterise in-pipe defects from CCTV images. It is also clear that new inspection techniques are being developed so that more physically relevant inspection data can be collected to inform the development and use of more physically based pipe/asset structural deterioration models.

Sustainability of research infrastructures (RIs) is a big challenge for funders, stakeholders and operators, as is the adoption of adequate management tools including tools for monitoring and evaluating their performance and impact. The foundations of BioData.pt, the Portuguese RI of Biological Data and Portuguese node of ELIXIR, were laid under the “Building BioData.pt” project. During this project, performance and impact indicators were collected and analysed under the light of international guidelines for assessing the performance and impact of European RIs. The case presented herein benefitted from several exchanges with BioData.pt and ELIXIR colleagues to facilitate a collective reflection on how to adapt and adopt European frameworks and recommendations to the national landscape and specificity of activities, to support the management of national RIs.

CSPs-COs have been positioning themselves as an important part of the development of citizen science. COs outside of the realm of citizen science have been operating for decades as instruments of public participation in both social and environmental monitoring fields. ICTs and new technologies increase the exponential impact of CSPs-COS. There are great expectations about their ability to impact the performance of citizen science, as a research infrastructure and as a way to facilitate the governance of commons resources. Co-UDlabs tiene como principal objetivo promover una red de trabajo internacional vinculada a grandes y singulares infraestructuras de investigación que permitan desarrollar una cooperación eficiente y eficaz entre científicos, investigadores, operadores, empresas y administraciones ante los retos cada vez más apremiantes de la gestión de los sistemas de drenaje urbano. Las actividades de investigación e innovación del sector del drenaje y saneamiento urbano requieren una amplia gama de conocimientos especializados que van acompañados de importantes inversiones en el diseño y explotación, actividades experimentales en laboratorio y en campo, así como pilotos, que permitan la rápida adopción de soluciones a escala real por parte de la industria. Con Co-UDLabs, un consorcio de 9 socios ofrecerá acceso transnacional (Transnational Access - TA) gratuito a 17 instalaciones experimentales únicas en Europa, incluyendo el acceso a las instalaciones, así como el apoyo técnico para el desarrollo de los experimentos a realizar y los gastos de viaje y estancia. Las temáticas de los proyectos cubren todo el abanico de procesos de los sistemas de saneamiento y drenaje como el estudio de inundaciones, transporte de la contaminación por la escorrentía, procesos de transporte y degradación de contaminantes en las redes de saneamiento, deterioro de conducciones, monitorización avanzada y distribuida (IoT), control en tiempo real de redes o el análisis de Sistemas Urbanos de Drenaje Sostenible. El proyecto también proporcionará acceso a un gran conjunto de datos históricos obtenidos en los laboratorios e instalaciones de campo del proyecto, así como a los resultados de una serie Actividades Conjuntas de Investigación (Joint Research Activities - JRA) realizadas por los socios de Co-UDlabs. Estas actividades están relacionadas con el desarrollo de soluciones inteligentes para la monitorización de los sistemas de saneamiento y drenaje, la evaluación del deterioro de los activos de la red y la mejora de la resiliencia y la sostenibilidad de las soluciones de drenaje. Finalmente, el proyecto desarrollará una serie de actividades para fomentar la creación de una comunidad europea de drenaje urbano, en la que se promoverá la participación de asociaciones de profesionales y operadores a escala nacional e internacional.

The study described is planned as part of the Horizon 2020 funded project EOSC Future (https://eoscfuture.eu/). In Work Package 6, Task 6.3 of EOSC Future, Test Science Projects (TSP) are specified. This interview guide refers to the TSP “COVID-19 metadata findability and interoperability in EOSC” (short: META-COVID). The objective of this TSP is to develop a framework for a metadata model characterising the contextual metadata and especially the research approach followed in the domain represented by each research infrastructure (RI). Contextual metadata refers to data about the research process that generated the data, and / or objects that describe that activity and to data about the ‘inputs’ into the research process – grants, people, organisations, regulators, research infrastructures etc. In the TSP a specific focus should be given to the modelling of the artifact “research activity”. The intention is to apply an iterative process of consensus building amongst experts drawn from different disciplines in the life sciences and social sciences and humanities. As a first step semi-structured interviews with representatives of the participating RIs will be performed by the European Clinical Research Infrastructure Network (ECRIN) following this interview guide. The purpose of this paper is to raise awareness and stimulate a discussion on the current situation of social sciences and humanities research infrastructures in Switzerland, the Swiss roadmap process, and possible improvements of the way in which projects for research infrastructures are funded. This paper was first written by an informal Social Sciences and Humanities Swiss and European infrastructures coordination group and then presented and discussed at a stakeholders’ conference on May 31, 2022, in Bern. The content of the paper is the result of collaborative work carried out within a larger group,consisting ofthe directors of national research infrastructuresin the SSH, the national coordinators of international SSH RIs with Swiss participation (CESSDA, CLARIN, DARIAH, ESS, SHARE, GGP) and the representatives of the Swiss Academy for the SSH. In the NFDI each consortium identifies, collects, and develops approaches that might be relevant for the broader research activities by and in the communities. The Working Group “Cookbooks, Guidance, and Best Practices” aims at identifying, collecting, exchanging and, where appropriate, harmonizing concepts, workflows, and best practices from consortia related to these topics and will develop support strategies to advance high-quality metadata production and provision.
