Outbursts comprise the predominant natural hazards in Chinese underground coal mines. Extracting high content gas within coal seams is one of the most effective ways to reduce the risk of triggering outbursts. However, with the depth increase of coal mining production, conventional gas drainage might be failed due to the low permeability of coal seams. Additional permeability enhancement methods should be adopted to improve the gas drainage efficiency. In this study, we proposed the application of liquid carbon dioxide fracturing for enhancing gas drainage in a underground coal mine in China with low permeability coal seams. By drilling cross-seam boreholes, liquid carbon dioxide fracturing was simultaneously performed in the two drilled fracturing boreholes. The effective damage radius of liquid carbon dioxide fracturing was further identified by continuously monitoring pure gas flow rates in different observation boreholes. After liquid carbon dioxide fracturing, there was no significant decrease in pure gas flow rate of observation boreholes for a period of 2 weeks. A conceptual model of liquid carbon dioxide fracturing was proposed for illustrating the mechanisms of improving gas drainage efficiency. Some methods for further optimizing gas drainage with the operation of liquid carbon dioxide fracturing under various thickness of coal seams and geological conditions were discussed. With the increase of coal extracting depth, a considerable number of dynamic disasters display the co-occurrence and coupling effect of rockburst and coal–gas outburst, which is defined as the disturbed compound dynamic disaster. In this study, two loading modes were adopted to investigate disaster characteristics using true triaxial apparatus. The stress states of one freed and the other five stressed faces were introduced to simulate actual stress conditions. Two high-speed cameras were used to capture the disaster process. The mechanical and strength properties, failure modes, and ejection kinetic energy were analyzed. Results showed that the compound dynamic disaster mainly exhibited local grain ejection, fragment spalling, large-scale grain ejection, plate bending, and ultimately failure. The strength of the sample first increased and then decreased slowly with the increase in the intermediate principal stress. After failure, a V-shaped coal-burst pit was formed, which was approximately parallel to the intermediate principal stress and perpendicular to the free face. The grain ejection exhibited obvious characteristics of spatial sorting, and the grain size decreased with the distance from the free face. The kinetic energy showed little change with increase in the intermediate principal stress in the displacement loading mode; whereas, it first increased and then decreased in the stress loading mode. The pressurized gas promotes the development of coal cracks and fully fractures the coal rock. Under the combined actions of the elastic energy stored in coal mass and the internal energy of pressurized gas, compound dynamic disasters may occur. The microstructure of coal has a significant influence on the permeability of the coal seam. To study the characteristics of microstructure changes in coal seam under temperature impact, we conducted temperature-impact experiments using a high–low temperature test system, and we studied the coal pores and fissure structure before and after the temperature impact using scanning electron microscopy, industrial micro-computed tomography, and mercury intrusion. Based on the digital image processing technology and thermal stress theory, we qualitatively and quantitatively analyzed the variation of crack width, specific surface area, and pore diameter, and deeply analyzed the failure mechanism of temperature impact on coal seam microstructure. The results showed that the temperature impact caused the macropores to interpenetrate and form macroscopic cracks in the coal sample, which resulted in a relatively small volume of macropores and increased the volume of mesopores and small pores. The maximum thermal stress generated during the temperature impact process was located in the tangential direction of the coal sample surface. The thermal stress generated by the temperature impact exceeded the tensile strength of the coal sample, which directly causes crack initiation, expansion, and mutual penetration. Many gas pre-drainage boreholes are generally constructed in coal seams to ensure safe underground operation. True triaxial experiments were conducted to study the mechanical response and gas flow characteristics of pre-drilled coal to reveal the in-situ behavior at pre-drilled regions in coal seams. The mechanical parameters, failure modes, and flow rate evolutions of pre-drilled coal samples were collected. The gas flow rate of pre-drilled coal samples showed an S-shaped trend with the increase of strain, and no obvious descending progress was found in the flow rate-strain curves. The typical failure mode for pre-drilled coal samples was shear-type during the true triaxial stress compression. V-shaped macro-fractures around the boreholes were observed when boreholes were perpendicular to bedding planes and parallel to face cleats. In contrast, single shear macro-fractures around the boreholes were observed when boreholes were parallel to butt cleats. The pre-drilled coal samples exhibited lower peak strength values when boreholes were parallel to butt cleats, induced by the relatively low cohesion parameter. Pre-drilled coal's initial flow rates perpendicular to bedding planes and parallel to butt cleats directions were only 33.33% and 41.67% of values measured along face cleats. More complex macro-fractures were formed, and up to a 39.30% decrease in strength was observed in pre-drilled coal samples under true triaxial unloading stress paths. The variations in volumetric strain level and the flow rate evolution were further discussed with an anisotropic conceptual failure model. The extraction of coalbed methane can supply clean energy to society and improve the safety of subsurface coal mining. The low and ultra-low permeability of coal seams has resulted in the significantly low efficiency of methane production in surface and subsurface extraction systems. Fluid stimulation has been extensively applied for the enhancement of formation permeability. However, the response of coal seams to fluid stimulation may be different from other formations due to their unique structure and mechanical properties. Moreover, the presence of shear-fracturing stimulation and its effect on permeability enhancement is more significant in coal seams during fluid stimulation. In this study, a fluid injection-induced hydrofracturing treatment and shear-fracturing stimulation were separately investigated through laboratory experiments. The permeability of both intact and fractured specimens was used to directly evaluate the efficiency of these two types of fluid stimulations in different types of reservoirs. The experimental results indicated that the closure of hydraulic (i.e., tensile) fractures significantly inhibited the permeability enhancement of the hydrofracturing treatment in coal seams, and resulted in the permeability of fractured coal specimens were considerably lower than that of hard rocks (e.g., shale and sandstone). The results also demonstrated that fluid injection-induced shear stimulation in the coal specimens resulted in dilation behavior primarily associated with permeability enhancement. This was attributed to the fact that the exfoliated particles and masses prop shear fractures and increase their stiffness. It was found that, because of the weak mechanical and discontinuous properties of coal seams, an increase in the deviator stress improved the feasibility of shear-fracturing stimulation. Finally, fluid stimulation can be achieved using low viscosity fluids, such as L/Sc-CO 2 , as the fracturing fluid tended to form a shear dilation zone with high permeability in the coal seams. • The closure of hydraulic fractures inhibit the efficiency of hydrofracturing in coal seams. • The shear-dilation zone induced by fluid stimulation significantly enhance coal permeability. • The mechanical properties of coal and low viscosity fluid advance the feasibility of shear stimulation. Permeability is a crucial parameter for characterizing gas transport and exchange in coal seams and is fundamental for designing and optimizing gas extraction and control methods. However, the permeability of coal seams is mainly determined through laboratory tests, with few studies using in-situ tests. To address the limitations of laboratory tests, such as their small scale and poor ability to provide engineering guidance, this study proposes a novel in-situ permeability test (IPT) system to investigate the fluid-flow aspects of geological formations. The system comprises the water-injection sealing and gas-injection testing subsystems. By considering the coal seam surrounding a gas injection borehole interval as a filter, the equation for calculating the in-situ coal seam permeability was derived based on steady-state gas-seepage theory. The IPT system was then assembled and used to test the in-situ permeability of the JI 15 coal seam at the Pingdingshan XII coal mine. The study estimated the representative elementary volume (REV) of the tested coal seam permeability, analyzed the applicability of Darcy's law during the tests, and obtained the anisotropic permeability of the coal seam by drilling test boreholes in different directions within the coal seam. Finally, the reliability of the new test method was verified by comparing its results with laboratory and well test data. Fracking to approach permeability enhancement is indispensable to enhance coalbed methane recovery, which can significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions and produce substantial clean energy. To access efficient fracking, samples of Permian low permeable coal reservoir were cracked into different sizes or scales of blocks and particles with liquid nitrogen cryogenic freeze fracturing (FF) by maximizing the underlying heterogeneity of coal. To investigate the crack efficacy, this study systematically examined the permeability evolution and mesoscopic cracking behaviors of coal with different water contents and cleat–fracture systems in the context of cryogenic FF. Results showed that the permeability enhancement and microcracking tended to occur with increasing water content of coal sample; and the efficacy of cryogenic FF on the tighter coal sample was more remarkable. However, the permeability does not strictly increase with the cycles of cryogenic FF and has a close relationship with water content, structural plane direction, efficacy of cryogenic FF, and porosity compaction. The mesoscopic cracking behaviors indicate that numerous smaller pores are iteratively, not strictly sequentially, cracked and become connective in this process. The permeability evolution of coal sample is identified as significantly associated with the mesoscopic cracking behaviors. Notably, the first cycle of cryogenic FF acted on the detected several scales of pores and micro fissures, and partially caused these structures to be opened and interconnected to be permeable. Two main changes were observed in the microcracking of the coal samples in this study: 1) nonuniform shrinkage deformation and micro fissure expansion; and 2) pores opening mostly in the macropore and mesopore scale. It is reasoned that thermal cracking and intermittent opening of seepage pores due to the phase transition of free water in pores or micro fissures ultimately contribute to the permeability enhancement in low permeable and heterogeneous coal. Although the production mechanism of CO 2 -enhanced coalbed methane (ECBM) recovery has been previously reported and corresponding models have been proposed, investigations on the effect of the injection pressure on the production efficiency considering the mass transfer between the coal fracture and matrix are lacking. In this study, laboratory core flooding experiments were conducted on the coal sample from South Sichuan Basin, China. Experimental results indicate that earlier breakthroughs and a higher initial CH 4 flow rate and cumulative CH 4 flow rate occurred under a higher injection pressure in the CO 2 -ECBM recovery. However, as CO 2 was continuously injected, the CH 4 flow rate and cumulative CH 4 flow rate under a lower injection pressure exceeded those at the higher injection pressure. Furthermore, a dual porosity model was used to perform numerical simulations. The simulation results under four injection pressures matched the experimental results well. The simulation results indicate that the dispersion in fractures and the mass transfer rate between matrices and fractures significantly affect the CH 4 flow rate. Because of the low or ultra-low permeability of coal seams, hydraulic fracturing technology has been widely used to improve the permeability of coal seams in both ground and underground extraction. Recently, liquid carbon dioxide (L-CO 2 ) as an environment-friendly fracturing fluid has drawn attention from researchers and engineers. In this study, a true tri-axial system was adopted to perform hydraulic and L-CO 2 fracturing experiments on coal specimens from the South Sichuan Basin in China. The effects of geological and engineering factors (horizontal stress ratio, injection rate, and fracturing fluid) on induced fracture propagation were investigated in this study. The various geological and engineering factors can synthetically, rather than unilaterally, impact the fractures propagation to generate three types of stimulation mechanism. Based on our experimental results, we succeeded in approximately predicting the stimulation mechanism for induced fracturing under different conditions. Generally, the effect of pre-existing natural fractures on the fracture propagation was enhanced, whereas the effect of the geo-stress was reduced, when L-CO 2 was adopted as the fracturing fluid. The greenhouse effect has attracted increasing attention globally. The geologic sequestration of CO 2 is considered as an effective method for reducing the amount of CO 2 in the atmosphere. Carbon-dioxide enhanced coalbed methane (CO 2 -ECBM) recovery is extremely attractive owing to its ability to store CO 2 in coal seams while simultaneously enhancing the production of methane. However, the injection of CO 2 can induce a deformation of the coal matrix, which has a significant effect on the fluid flow and stability of the coal seams. In this study, the sorption kinetics experiments indicated the high anisotropy and heterogeneity of local sorption deformation in coal samples and a unique kinetic behavior of sorption deformation which was rarely reported and analyzed in detail in previous studies. This kinetic behavior demonstrated a rapid increase of sorption strain followed by a slight or significant falloff until the equilibrium state reached. The characteristics of component distribution in coal samples were investigated using CT scanning and micro-lithotype and EDS analysis. An extensive analysis of the experiment results indicated the following: 1) Carbon dioxide dissolved during the first sorption process induced a rearrangement of the coal structure, leading to a drastic variation of deformation behavior between the first and subsequent sorption process. 2) The unique kinetic behavior of sorption deformation could be induced by either the loss of moisture in coal or the interaction of different coal components. The mechanism of these two factors induced coal shrinkage was different and had a distinct effect on the global behavior of sorption deformation. 3) The quantitative relationship between compressional and dilative components directly verified the significant compression of inertinite-rich regions by the slow swelling of vitrinite-rich regions. 4) The kinetic behavior of sorption deformation was affected by the combination of the macroscopic bedding structure and the heterogeneous component distribution in coal. • CO 2 dissolved during the first sorption process induces a rearrangement of the coal structure. • Kinetic behavior of local sorption deformation strongly depends on coal heterogeneity. • The slow swelling of vitrinite compressed inertinite in coal during sorption process. • A quantitative relationship between vitrinite and inertinite sorption strain was investigated.
