The fabrication of the Screen‐Printed Electrode (SPE) was performed using the graphite ink to print the working (WE) and counter electrodes (CE), and silver/silver chloride path as reference electrode (RE). All the electrodes are printed in a paper substrate using screen‐printing technique. The resulting SPE is characterized using scanning electron microscopy, showing all the ink layer, and subsequently optimized. The paper sample presented the cellulose fibers entanglement, extremely rough, with highly porous network. Then the graphite ink was deposited and the surface became flat, thinner and very smooth. When the silver ink was painted on top of the graphite ink, the spherical silver particles, ranged from 2–3.5 μm in size, were observed. And finally, the silver ink was covered with a AgCl layer and the particle size becomes larger with an irregular sphere‐like phase. The images showed that the layers appear to be homogeneously distributed with good coverage. Then fabrication process was optimized concerning type of paper, the sanding process, the hydrophobic barrier, the electrode design and size. In summary, the optimized values included using the previously sanded matte paper with a mineral spirit layer. The design and size of the electrode were also tested to achieve the best electrochemical performance (design 3 with 3.5 cm). The final SPE was a miniaturized and flexible paper‐based electrochemical electrode. In order to evaluate the electrical properties, the ohmic resistance of each ink was tested using a multimeter and the obtained values were 2.18 kΩ for the graphite ink, 2.27 Ω for the silver ink and 38.33 kΩ for the silver/silver chloride ink. That can indicate the good conductivity of each ink used in the fabrication of the electrode and the correct deposition of Ag/AgCl. Finally, the electrode was used to measure the electrochemical response of K4[Fe(CN)6] in different concentrations. Then a calibration curve was obtained from the voltammograms and a linearity was observed between the current and concentration in the range of 0.50–2.00 mM. Electrocoagulation and chemical coagulation are treatment methods based on the same removal mechanism.In this study, it was investigated the effectiveness of coagulation methods using Al electrodes and Al2(SO4)3.18H2O on the wastewaters from cardboard production.In the electrocoagulation experiments, the optimum current and pH where the highest COD removal efficiency by 54% was achieved were determined respectively as 10A and 6.62.The study also it was seen that 58%COD removal was reached for the KCl concentration of 0.5 mg/L that was applied.In the chemical coagulation study, the highest removal efficiencies were obtained as 36%, 95% and 97% for respectively COD, color and turbidity.The results show that higher efficiency could be achieved by electrocoagulation as a pre-treatment step. Using disposable screen-printed electrodes is a convenient way of monitoring environmental pollution, production process control etc. Usually, commercially available screen-printed electrodes are used, but more and more studies are being carried out in the field of printing electrodes on thinner, low-cost and versatile substrates, including paper. In the present research, the comparison of screen-printed electrodes printed on different paper-based materials is presented. Two unique and innovative invasive plant-based papers made from (1) Japanese knotweed, (2) Canadian and Giant goldenrod and (3) commercially available cardboard were used as a printing material for the electrodes. The selected paper substrates were characterized, and screen-printed electrodes were printed. The influence of substrates' properties and pre- or post-treatment of the screen-printed electrodes on the electrochemical behaviour is thoroughly analyzed. The results indicate that the printing substrate (roughness) had the most significant influence on the cyclic voltammetry response. Comparing pre- and post-treatment of screen-printed electrodes, it was shown that grinding influenced the electrochemical activity significantly, while corona discharge does not have as significant influence. Besides, it was shown that the invasive plant-based papers are viable alternatives to commercially available papers and can be used as low-cost and eco-friendly alternatives for disposable screen-printed electrodes. • Ultraflexible and biodegradable PSCs on cellophane paper were achieved. • OMO electrodes exhibited stable resistance after 1000 bending CYC cycles (R = 1 mm). • PSCs on cellophane retained 97.6% of initial PCE after bending with radius of 0.3 mm. • PSCs on cellophane preserved 95.8% of initial PCE after 1000 bending cycles (R = 1 mm). Flexible perovskite solar cells (PSCs) on paper are promising biodegradable power sources for wearable and portable electronics, while fabrication of paper-based PSCs with high mechanical flexibility and efficiency is still challenging due to the limited optimization of paper-based PSCs. Herein, flexible PSCs were demonstrated using 25 μm cellophane paper substrates combined with TiO 2 /ultrathin Ag/TiO 2 (OMO) electrodes, composing the typical structure of cellophane/OMO/C60 pyrrolidinetris-acid (CPTA)/CH 3 NH 3 PbI 3 /Spiro-OMeTAD/Au. PSCs on cellophane paper exhibited a high power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 13.00%. More interesting, the performance of paper-based PSCs showed minor degradation after bending with the radius in the range of 0.3–10 mm: they retained 97.6% of the initial PCE after bending with a radius of 0.3 mm and even preserved 95.8% of the initial PCE after bending with a radius of 1 mm for 1000 cycles. The ultraflexibility of PSCs was ascribed to the ultrathin substrates to relieve strain in bended devices and superior flexibility of OMO electrodes. To investigate the effect of aging on surface discharge of the pressboard on the shielding electrode at the end of bushing, a thermal aging preparation methods of different aging degrees of pressboard samples, surface defect model, and the associated hemisphere are designed and the step‐up method is used for subsequent experimental work. Finally, the partial discharges (PDs) under different degrees of aging are compared and combined with Fourier Transform Infrared spectra and electric field simulation. Results show that the pre‐discharge occurs mainly in the oil gap between the hemispherical electrode edge and the pressboard. The aging of the pressboard exerts no obvious effect on the discharge characteristics in the initial stage of PD; with the development of the discharge, the development of aging of pressboard leads to a higher electric field intensity acting over a greater area, the more intense the discharge, the faster the relative discharge increases and the larger its amplitude. This discharge will cause decomposition of the oil in the pores of the aging pressboard thus generating gas bubbles which will move as discharge develops. Flexible electronics based on the paper have attracted significant attention. A paper-based triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) consisting of commercial and low-cost materials, e.g., printer paper, polytetrafluoroethylene tape, and conductive ink, was proposed in this study. This TENG unit can directly illuminate 24 blue commercial LEDs. Furthermore, compound paper-based TENGs were developed and a considerable enhancement of the electrical output performance was thereby realized. In the past few years, point-of-care testing (POCT) technology has crossed the boundaries of laboratory determination and entered the stage of practical applications. Herein, the latest advances and principal issues in the design and fabrication of paper-based bipolar electrode electrochemiluminescence (BPE-ECL) sensors, which are widely used in the POCT field, are highlighted. After introducing the attractive physical and chemical properties of cellulose paper, various approaches aimed at enhancing the functions of the paper, and their underlying principles are described. The materials typically employed for fabricating paper-based BPE are also discussed in detail. Subsequently, the universal method of enhancing BPE-ECL signal and improving detection accuracy is put forward, and the ECL detector widely used is introduced. Furthermore, the application of paper-based BPE-ECL sensors in biomedical, food, environmental and other fields are displayed. Finally, future opportunities and the remaining challenges are analyzed. Globe Thistles-Like NiCo 2 S 4 and rGO grow on flexible paper for the detection of H 2 O 2. [Display omitted] • To paper as the basement, successfully developed a low cost and biodegradable flexible electrochemical sensor electrode materials. • NiCo 2 S 4 microspheres with unique globe thistles-like structure was prepared for the first time. • The NiCo 2 S 4 /rGO/FP electrode has high sensitivity, low LOD, and wide linear range. The Globe Thistles-Like (GTL) NiCo 2 S 4 nanostructures were supported on reduced graphene oxide modified filter paper (FP). The prepared GTL NiCo 2 S 4 /rGO/FP is investigated as a disposable and flexible electrode for the electrochemical detection of H 2 O 2 in alkaline media. Owing to the rich redox active sites, the synergistic effect between Co3+ and Ni2+, and the rapid electron transportation of substituting sulfur (S) for oxygen (O) in NiCo 2 O 4 , the GTL NiCo 2 S 4 /rGO/FP exhibits considerable enzyme-free H 2 O 2 sensing performance with wide linear H 2 O 2 ranging from 38.8 to 37306.8 μM, high sensitivity of 2.4326 mA mM−1 cm−2, and low detection limit of 0.08 μM. The GTL NiCo 2 S 4 /rGO/FP electrode has stable sensing performance and is highly selective toward analyte for physiological interfering species. The excellent electrochemical performance of GTL NiCo 2 S 4 /rGO/FP composite is attributed to the GTL structure of NiCo 2 S 4. By studying the hydrothermal reaction time, electrochemical active surface area, and hydrophilic-hydrophobic surfaces of GTL NiCo 2 S 4 /rGO/FP composite, the relationship between the microstructure and sensing performance of the composite was elucidated. In this study, we explored the facile and quick dry transfer method to fabricate a paper-based electrode for flexible printed energy storage system. The conventional Ag nanoparticle suspension with high solid contents above ~50 wt% was confirmed to be deposited on a super hydrophobic polyethylene terephthalate (SHP-PET) substrate without a special ink formulation or surface treatment of substrate. The silver nanoparticle (AgNP) layer on the SHP-PET was able to be transferred only onto the toner-printed region of the paper substrate during a simple lamination process, thereby realizing the patterned AgNP conductive lines on the paper substrates. The AgNP/toner/paper electrodes were highly robust, showing no deterioration in conductivity after taping for 100 times. Moreover, the AgNP/toner/paper electrodes successfully functioned as flexible electrodes; thus, light emitting diodes connected to the AgNP/paper electrodes could be operated under folding deformation without significant loss of brightness. As a potential application in flexible energy storage systems, a flexible supercapacitor based on the AgNP/toner/paper electrodes as the current collector was also demonstrated; it showed an excellent power density of 10.79–16.64 kW/kg and energy density of 1.85–4.65 Wh/kg. Flexible paper electrodes for supercapacitors were prepared with partially-exfoliated graphite and polypyrrole as the active materials. Graphite was coated on paper with pencil drawing and then electrochemically exfoliated using the cyclic voltammetry (CV) technique to obtain the exfoliated graphite (EG)-coated paper (EG-paper). Polypyrrole (PPy) doped with β-naphthalene sulfonate anions was deposited on EG-paper through in-situ polymerization, leading to the formation of PPy-EG-paper. The as-prepared PPy-EG-paper showed a high electrical conductivity of 10.0 S·cm-1 and could be directly used as supercapacitor electrodes. The PPy-EG-paper electrodes gave a remarkably larger specific capacitance of 2148 F·g-1 at a current density of 0.8 mA.cm-2, compared to PPy-graphite-paper (848 F·g-1). The capacitance value of PPy-EG-paper could be preserved by 80.4% after 1000 charge/discharge cycles. In addition, the PPy-EG-paper electrodes demonstrated a good rate capability and a high energy density of 110.3 Wh·kg-1 at a power density of 121.9W·kg-1. Ion-selective electrodes (ISEs) are an efficient and versatile tool for ion detection. However, portability and applicability for field applications are often limited by the need of a conditioning step, and high cost of the needed bulky reference electrode. Herein, the traditional conditioning protocol of ISEs has been eliminated and a paper-based solid-contact ISE (PBSC-ISE) has been integrated with a paper-based solid-contact reference electrode (PBSC-RE) in a single strip format for on-site analysis. The PBSC-RE is based on the copolymer methyl methacrylate-co-decyl methacrylate (MMA-DMA) (support matrix), combined with ionic liquids (ILs) to create and maintain a stable potential that is un-affected by a change in ionic activity. This single-strip ready-to-use sensor yields a Nernstian response towards Na +, K + , and I − ions with submicromolar limits of detection, and is able to be used for multiplex analysis. Paper based microfluidic devices have emerged as a simple and low cost platform for efficient clinical diagnostics. An effort has been made in the present work to develop a microfluidic cholesterol biosensor using paper based platform. Microfluidic channels have been fabricated by patterning filter paper (Whatman 1) using photolithography. SU 8 photoresist formed a hydrophobic barrier on the paper with microchannels of dimensions 1000 μm(w)×100 μm(t). A three electrode system was fabricated by simple mask printing of graphite as the working, as well as the counter electrodes, and silver as the reference electrode. The working electrode was modified using nickel oxide nanoparticles prepared using co-precipitation method. Cholesterol oxidase enzyme is spotted on the test zone and chronoamperometric measurements are taken for different concentrations of cholesterol in the range of 0.12-10.23 mM, giving a quick and sensitive detection with a sensitivity of 24 µA mM−1 cm−2. An inkjet-printed relative humidity sensor based on capacitive changes which responds to different humidity levels in the environment is presented in this work. The inkjet-printed silver interdigitated electrodes configuration on the paper substrate allowed for the fabrication of a functional proof-of-concept of the relative humidity sensor, by using the paper itself as a sensing material. The sensor sensitivity in terms of relative humidity changes was calculated to be around 2 pF/RH %. The possibility of using pyrolyzed paper as disposable working electrodes for trace metals determination is reported for the first time. A small piece of pyrolyzed paper (0.7×0.7 cm) was positioned at the bottom side of the electrochemical cell using a rubber O-ring, which defined the electrode area (0.48 cm; 0.18 cm 2 ). A large number of electrodes can be obtained from a single piece of standard dimensions (2.5 cm×7.5 cm) of paper, therefore minimizing the cost per unit. The electrochemical performance of the pyrolyzed paper was demonstrated by cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and by the determination of Zn, Cd, and Pb by square-wave anodic stripping voltammetry. The unmodified pyrolyzed paper showed excellent performance for Pb and Cd detection (LOD =0.19 and 0.16 ppb, respectively). Buckypaper (BP) is a planar film that consists of random network of multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) held together by weak van der Waals interactions at tube-tube junctions. Although individual carbon nanotubes (CNTs) possess remarkable electrical properties, the electrical resistance of pristine BP is usually too high for practical applications. However, the electrical resistivity of BP can be attenuated by applying modest compressive stresses. Herein, we report an analytical model for predicting the electrical resistivity of BP under defined level of compressive strain. The predictive piezoresistive model of BP was developed by formulating a direct relationship with the structural parameters, physical and electrical properties of CNTs. The basis of the piezoresistive model relied upon the geometrical probability approach in combination with classical Hertzian contact mechanics and constriction resistance techniques. A comparison has been made between the theoretical and experimental results of electrical resistivity of BPs with varying densities. A reasonably good quantitative agreement was obtained between the theory and experiments. The main source of error was caused by the uncertainty in the measurement of the initial BP thickness. Through theoretical modeling, the initial volume fraction of CNTs was found to be one of the key parameters that modulated the piezoresistive behavior of BP. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, the influence of partial discharges (PD) on the subsequent dielectric properties of oil-impregnated paper (OIP) is investigated. Dielectric frequency response (DFR) of OIP is investigated at varied levels of moisture, thermal aging, temperature, oil conductivity and electrode material, to allow comparison of these influences. It is shown that PD activity inside OIP can significantly change the real and imaginary parts of permittivity of the paper layers, especially in the frequency range below 100 Hz. It is shown that even if the PD activity is concentrated on a few percent of the test sample, the real part of permittivity measured on the entire sample after a few tens of hours of PD activity can increase up to 10 times at very low frequencies (∼ 1 mHz) and the imaginary part of the permittivity can increase up to 100 times at low frequencies (∼ 1 Hz). The change of the real and imaginary parts of permittivity due to PD activity is permanent. It is very similar to the change caused by thermal aging, and somewhat similar to the change caused by moisture and higher oil conductivity. It is also shown that the dissipation factor of OIP in contact with copper and brass increases, even in the absence of PD, but contact with aluminum and stainless steel has no influence on DFR of OIP. Graphene and porous carbon materials are widely used as electrodes in supercapacitors. In order to form mechanically stable electrodes, binders can be added to the conducting electrode material. However, most binders degrade the electrical performance of the electrodes. Here we show that by using nanofibrillated cellulose (NFC) as a binder the electrical properties, such as capacitance, were enhanced. The highest capacitance was measured at an NFC content of approximately 10 % in ratio to the total amount of active material. The NFC improved the ion transport in the electrodes. Thus, electrodes made of a mixture of nanographite and NFC achieved larger capacitances in supercapacitors than electrodes with nanographite only. In addition to electrical properties, NFC enhanced the mechanical stability and wet strength of the electrodes significantly. Furthermore, NFC stabilized the aqueous nanographite dispersions, which improved the processability. Galvanostatic cycling was performed and an initial transient behaviour of the supercapacitors during the first cycles was observed. However, stabilized supercapacitors showed efficiencies of 98-100%. A novel and binder free Co@graphite/paper electrode is prepared by electrodeposition Co nano-sheet on the surface of a graphite layer modified paper substrate. The morphology and phase structure of the Co@graphite/paper electrode are characterized by scanning electron microscopy equipped with energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer, transmission electron microscope and X-ray diffractometer. The catalytic activity of the Co@graphite/paper electrode for H 2 O 2 electrooxidation is investigated by means of cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry. The catalyst combines tightly with the paper and exhibits a good stability. The oxidation current density reaches to 580 mA cm −2 in 2 mol dm −3 NaOH and 0.5 mol dm −3 H 2 O 2 at 0.5 V. Heretofore, unlike HVAC transformers, there is not much experience in both insulation design guides and test methods for ultra HV converter transformers. This special insulation phenomenon is very prominent due to the complication of voltage applied on valve-side windings of converter transformers. There is a severe lack of empirical research on partial discharge in oil-paper insulation under the combined ACDC voltage. The study in this paper provides a timely research into the issues. Nine possible configurations, which intent to simulate different defects in the transformer, have been investigated. The PD inception voltages varied ratios of combined AC-DC voltages were conducted. The discharge magnitude and its relation with the applied voltage for selected four common configurations were obtained during voltage increasing and decreasing respectively, which presented the PD initiating process and also reflected the insulation behavior of dielectrics. Besides, the Finite Element Analysis Soft was used to propose the effect of morphology of electrode surface (3 dimensional roughness is approximately 0.03 mm) on PD characteristics, which is very lacking in the previous references. We proposed and experimentally demonstrated a cost-efficient and easy-to-fabricate flexible thin-film nanocrystal quantum dot (NCQD) photodetector, by sandwiching a piece of NCQD-soaked tracing paper between two PEDOT:PSS electrodes. The highly conductive and transparent multilayer polymer electrodes are printed with an office inkjet printer without further patterning on commercial unmodified transparency films. The tracing paper is able to act as both the bed for NCQD attachment and the interspacing layer to prevent short-circuiting in vertical devices. Consistent increase in device performance is observed when the bending radius becomes smaller. Linear I-V characteristics are obtained, which show our device structure works as a photoconductor. Abstract: Porous conducting carbon paper has been identified as one of the most suitable materials to be used as an electrode support in a polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC). Carbon paper was prepared following a combined technique of papermaking followed by composite formation. Samples were prepared with varying thickness while maintaining a uniform composition and a constant density of 0.50g/cc. The effect of the thickness on various properties of carbon paper affecting its performance in the PEM fuel cell and cell efficiency has been discussed. Power density as high as 805mW/cm2 has been achieved for PEM fuel cell employing carbon paper sample with 0.028cm thickness, an increase of more than 55% as compared to 510mW/cm2 for 0.046cm thick sample. Oxide-based thin-film transistors (TFTs) with a lateral in-plane electrode are self-assembled on paper substrates, and the electrical modulation effect of the in-plane electrode is investigated. A \SiO2-based solid-electrolyte film with high specific capacitance is used as the gate dielectric, and the operation voltage is reduced to less than 2.0 V. The threshold voltage (Vth) of such paper TFTs is tuned from -0.98 to 0.94 V by different voltage biases on the in-plane electrode. The threshold voltage shift (\Delta Vth) can be described by \Delta Vth = -(CG2/CG1)VG2, where CG2 and CG1 are the in-plane electrode and bottom-gate specific capacitance values. High electrical performance with a current on/off ratio of \6 \times \10^5 \sim \10^6, a subthreshold swing of 0.14 \sim 0.19 V/dec, and a mobility of \8.64 \sim \9.45\ \cm^2/\V\cdot \s is obtained at different in-plane electrode voltage biases. Abstract: Electrodeposition of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) doped with chloride (PEDOT-Cl) on a paper substrate is demonstrated. A fully printed silver/polyaniline (Ag/PANI) layer-by-layer structure on a pigment coated paper acted as a working electrode, on which a layer of PEDOT-Cl was galvanostatically grown in an electrochemical cell. The deposited PEDOT-Cl appeared as a dark-blue circular area on a green Ag/PANI electrode. The electrodeposition was further confirmed by chemical and topographical analyses. We report the fabrication of a plasma-generating device on a paper substrate. This device was fabricated using a screen print process. Plasmas were ignited between two parallel electrodes with a plasma gap of 237 to 710 \mu\m using a dc power source. We demonstrated that a stable helium plasma can be sustained when the substrate is flat, rolled, and folded along various orientations. When the plasma was ignited with a 0.2-\mu\L salt solution droplet with 1.4, 4.6, and 7.8 ng of Li, Na, and K respectively applied to the discharge gap, clear metallic emission lines emanated from the plasma. Screen-printing technology has revolutionized many fields, including that of electrochemical biosensing. Due to their current relevance, this review, unlike other papers, discusses the relevant aspects of electrochemical biosensors manufactured using this technology in connection to both paper substrates and wearable formats. The main trends, advances, and opportunities provided by these types of devices, with particular attention to the environmental and biomedical fields, are addressed along with illustrative fundamentals and applications of selected representative approaches from the recent literature. Commercially available metal inks are mainly designed for planar substrates (for example, polyethylene terephthalate foils or ceramics), and they contain hydrophobic polymer binders that fill the pores in fabrics when printed, thus resulting in hydrophobic electrodes. Here, a low‐cost binder‐free method for the metallization of woven and nonwoven fabrics is presented that preserves the 3D structure and hydrophilicity of the substrate. Metals such as Au, Ag, and Pt are grown autocatalytically, using metal salts, inside the fibrous network of fabrics at room temperature in a two‐step process, with a water‐based silicon particle ink acting as precursor. Using this method, (patterned) metallized fabrics are being enabled to be produced with low electrical resistance (less than 3.5 Ω sq−1). In addition to fabrics, the method is also compatible with other 3D hydrophilic substrates such as nitrocellulose membranes. The versatility of this method is demonstrated by producing coil antennas for wireless energy harvesting, Ag–Zn batteries for energy storage, electrochemical biosensors for the detection of DNA/proteins, and as a substrate for optical sensing by surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy. In the future, this method of metallization may pave the way for new classes of high‐performance devices using low‐cost fabrics. Hydrophilic metallization on fabrics for new high‐performance devices is demonstrated. A wide range of metals are deposited inside fabrics (paper, cotton) and nitrocellulose membranes, without modifying the surface. Coil antennas are then demonstrated for wireless energy harvesting, Ag–Zn batteries for energy storage, electrochemical biosensors for DNA/protein detection, and a substrate for surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy.
