Few studies have considered the capabilities of gastropods living in minerally-deficient acidified coastal waters to compensate for outer shell corrosion or compromised growing edge shell production. We compared inner shell thickening between pristine shells (control) and corroded shells (experiment) of two related intertidal neritid gastropod species from reduced salinity and acidified environments. We predicted that the rocky-shore, Nerita chamaeleon, which has greater access to shell building biomineralization substrates, should better control shell thickness than the estuarine, Neripteron violaceum. Accordingly, N. chameleon was found to compensate perfectly for variation in the thickness of the outer calcitic blocky layer (BL). Optimal shell thickness (OST) was maintained by selective reabsorption of the aperture ridge of the distal shell (aragonitic crossed-lamellar layer, CL) and by increased internal deposition of proximal (older) shell (aragonitic protocrossed lamellar, PCL). Despite greater exposure to acidification and hyposalinity, N. violaceum showed no significant compensatory shell thickening. These findings reveal that shell thickening capability may vary greatly among intertidal gastropods and that this may be constrained by environmental biomineralization substrate availability. The study assessed the effect of salinity and lead (Pb(II)) on the anammox sludge for nitrogen removal from saline wastewater. Results showed decreased nitrogen removal and specific anammox activity (SAA) with elevated salinity and Pb(II). SAA reduced from 541.3 ± 4.3 mg N g -1 VSS d -1 at 0.5 mg/L Pb(II) to 436.0 ± 0.2 mg N g -1 VSS d -1 at 30 g/L NaCl, further to 303.6 ± 7.1 mg N g -1 VSS d -1 under 30 g/L NaCl + 0.5 mg/L Pb(II). Notably, the combined inhibition at salinity (15-20 g/L NaCl) and Pb(II) (0.3-0.4 mg/L) exhibited synergistic effect, while higher salinity and Pb(II) aligned with independent inhibition models. Combined inhibition decreased protein/polysaccharides ratio, indicating more severe negative effect on anammox aggregation capacity. Metagenomics confirmed decreased Candidatus Kuenenia, and enhanced denitrification under elevated salinity and Pb(II) conditions. This study explored the role of myo-inositol in alleviating the low salinity stress of White Shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei). Juvenile shrimp (0.4 ± 0.02 g) in low salinity (salinity 3) water were fed diets with myo-inositol levels of 0, 272, 518, 1020 and 1950 mg/kg (crude protein is 36.82 %, crude lipid is 7.58 %), fed shrimp in seawater at a salinity of 25 were fed a 0 mg/kg myo-inositol diet as a control (Ctrl). The experiment was carried out in tanks (50 L) with satiety feeding, and the experiment lasted for 6 weeks. After sampling, the serum was used to measure immune function, the hepatopancreas homogenate was used to measure the antioxidant capacity and hepatopancreas damage state, the hepatopancreas was used for transcriptomics analysis, and the gills were used for qPCR to measure osmotic pressure regulation. The results showed that the final weight and survival of the shrimp in the 1020 mg/kg group increased significantly compared with those in the other low salinity groups, but the final weight and biomass increase were significantly lower than those in the Ctrl group. Dietary myo-inositol improved the antioxidant capacity of shrimp under low salinity. B-cell hyperplasia and hepatic duct damage were observed in the hepatopancreas in the 0 mg/kg group. The results of transcriptome analysis showed that myo-inositol could participate in the osmotic pressure regulation of shrimp by regulating carbohydrate metabolism, amino acid metabolism, lipid metabolism and other related genes. Myo-inositol significantly affected the expression of related genes in ion transporter and G protein-coupled receptor-mediated pathways. This study demonstrated that myo-inositol can not only act as an osmotic pressure effector and participate in the osmolar regulation of shrimp through the phosphatidylinositol signaling pathway mediated by G protein-coupled receptors but also relieve low salinity stress by mediating physiological pathways such as immunity, antioxidation, and metabolism in shrimp. Understanding the different biological responses to salinity gradient between coexisting biofilm and flocs is crucial for regulating the ecological function of biofilm system. This study investigated performance, dynamics, and community assembly of biofilm system under 3 %-7% salinity gradient. The removal efficiency of NH 4 -N remained stable and exceeded 93 % at 3 %-6% salinity, but decreased to below 80 % at 7 % salinity. The elevated salinity promoted the synthesis of extracellular polymer substrates, inhibited microbial respiration, and significantly regulated the microbial community structure. Compared to flocs, biofilm exhibited greater species diversity and richer Nitrosomonas. It was found diffusion limitations dominated the microbial community assembly under the salinity gradient. And microbial network revealed positive interactions predominated the microbial relationships, designating norank Spirochaetaceae, unclassified Micrococcales, Corynebacterium, and Pusillimonas as keystone species. Moreover, distinct salinity preferences in nitrogen transformation-related genes were observed. Perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS) is detected in estuarine environments, where salinity levels fluctuate regularly. We investigated the effects of salinity on the toxicity of PFOS in embryos and larvae of Cyprinodon variegatus. We crossed six PFOS treatments (0, 1-10,000 μg/L) with two salinities (10, 30 ppt). Larvae exposed to the highest concentration of PFOS under high salinity accumulated over twice the amount of PFOS compared to larvae maintained under low salinity. Embryonic survival was unaffected by PFOS, salinity, or their interaction. PFOS delayed time to hatch and increased salinity reduced time to hatch regardless of PFOS treatment; however, no salinity by PFOS interactions were observed. Conversely, PFOS and salinity interacted in the larval stage, with decreased survival at 30 ppt salinity. Nitrate is a common contaminant in high-salinity wastewater, which has adverse effects on both the environment and human health. However, conventional biological treatment exhibits poor denitrification performance due to the high-salinity shock. In this study, an innovative approach using an electrostimulating microbial reactor (EMR) was explored to address this challenge. With a low-voltage input of 1.2 V, the EMR reached nitrate removal kinetic parameter (k NO3-N ) of 0.0166-0.0808 h -1 under high-salinities (1.5 %-6.5 %), which was higher than that of the microbial reactor (MR) (0.0125-0.0478 h -1 ). The mechanisms analysis revealed that low-voltage significantly enhanced microbial salt-in strategy and promoted the secretion of extracellular polymeric substances. Halotolerant denitrification microorganisms (Pseudomonas and Nitratireductor) were also enriched in EMR. Moreover, the EMR achieved a NO 3 -N removal efficiency of 73.64 % in treating high-salinity wastewater (salinity 4.69 %) over 18-cycles, whereas the MR only reached 54.67 %. Cu, as an essential and toxic element, has gained widespread attention. Both salinity and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) are known to influence Cu toxicity in marine organisms. However, the intricate interplay between these factors and their specific influence on Cu toxicity remains ambiguous. So, this study conducted toxicity tests of Cu on Oryzias melastigma. The experiments involved three salinity levels (10, 20, and 30 ppt) and three DOC levels (0, 1, and 5 mg/L) to comprehensively investigate the underlying mechanisms of toxicity. The complex toxic effects were analyzed by mortality, NKA activity, net Na + flux and Cu bioaccumulation in O. melastigma. The results indicate that Cu toxicity is notably influenced by both DOC and salinity. Interestingly, the discernible variation in Cu toxicity across different DOC levels diminishes as salinity levels increase. The presence of DOC enhances the impact of salinity on Cu toxicity, especially at higher Cu concentrations. Additionally, Visual MINTEQ was utilized to elucidate the chemical composition of Cu, revealing that DOC had a significant impact on Cu forms. Furthermore, we observed that fluctuations in salinity lead to the inhibition of Na + /K + -ATPase (NKA) activity, subsequently hindering the inflow of Na + . The effects of salinity and DOC on the bioaccumulation of copper were not significant. The influence of salinity on Cu toxicity is mainly through its effect on the osmotic regulation and biophysiology of O. melastigma. Additionally, DOC plays a crucial role in the different forms of Cu. Moreover, DOC-Cu complexes can be utilized by organisms. The impact of desalination brine on the marine environment is a global concern. Regarding this, salinity is generally accepted as the major environmental factor in desalination concentrate. However, recent studies have shown that the influence of organic contaminants in brine cannot be ignored. Therefore, a non-targeted screening method based on comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography-quadrupole mass spectrometry (GC × GC-qMS) was developed for identifying organic contaminants in the desalination brine. A total of 404 compounds were tentatively identified from four seawater desalination plants (three reverse osmosis plants and one multiple effect distillation plant) in China. The identified compounds were prioritized based on their persistence, bioaccumulation, ecotoxicity, usage, and detection frequency. Twenty-one (21) compounds (seven phthalates, ten pesticides, four trihalomethanes) were then selected for further quantitative analysis and ecological risk assessment, including compounds from the priority list along with substances from the same chemical classes. Ecologically risky substances in brine include diisobutylphthalate and bis(2-Ethylhexyl) phthalate, atrazine and acetochlor, and bromoform. Most of the contaminants come from raw seawater, and no high risk contaminants introduced by the desalination process have been found except for disinfection by-products. In brine discharge management, people believed that all pollution in raw seawater was concentrated by desalination process. This study shows that not all pollutants are concentrated during the desalination process. In this study, the total concentration of pesticide in the brine increased by 58.42%. The concentration of ∑PAEs decreased by 13.65% in reverse osmosis desalination plants and increased by 10.96% in the multi-effect distillation plant. The concentration of trihalomethane increased significantly in the desalination concentrate. The change in the concentration of pollutants in the desalination concentrate was related to the pretreatment method and the chemical characteristics of the contaminants. Human impacts on wild populations are numerous and extensive, degrading habitats and causing population declines across taxa. Though these impacts are often studied individually, wild populations typically face suites of stressors acting concomitantly, compromising the fitness of individuals and populations in ways poorly understood and not easily predicted by the effects of any single stressor. Developing understanding of the effects of multiple stressors and their potential interactions remains a critical challenge in environmental biology. Here, we focus on assessing the impacts of two prominent stressors associated with anthropogenic activities that affect many organisms across the planet - elevated salinity (e.g., from road de-icing salt) and temperature (e.g. from climate change). We examined a suite of physiological traits and components of fitness across populations of wood frogs originating from ponds that differ in their proximity to roads and thus their legacy of exposure to pollution from road salt. When experimentally exposed to road salt, wood frogs showed reduced survival (especially those from ponds adjacent to roads), divergent developmental rates, and reduced longevity. Family-level effects mediated these outcomes, but high salinity generally eroded family-level variance. When combined, exposure to both temperature and salt resulted in very low survival, and this effect was strongest in roadside populations. Taken together, these results suggest that temperature is an important stressor capable of exacerbating impacts from a prominent contaminant confronting many freshwater organisms in salinized habitats. Alternative splicing (AS) is an important post-transcriptional mechanism for adaptation of fish to environmental stress. Here, we performed a genome-wide investigation to AS dynamics in greater amberjack (Seriola dumerili), an economical marine teleost, in response to hypo- (10 ppt) and hyper-salinity (40 ppt) stresses. Totally, 2267-2611 differentially spliced events were identified in gills and kidney upon the exposure to undesired salinity regimes. In gills, genes involved in energy metabolism, stimulus response and epithelial cell differentiation were differentially spliced in response to salinity variation, while sodium ion transport and cellular amide metabolism were enhanced in kidney to combat the adverse impacts of salinity changes. Most of these differentially spliced genes were not differentially expressed, and AS was found to regulate different biological processes from differential gene expression, indicative of the functionally nonredundant role of AS in modulating salinity acclimation in greater amberjack. Agricultural run-off in Australia's Mackay-Whitsunday region is a major source of nutrient and pesticide pollution to coastal and inshore ecosystems of the Great Barrier Reef. While the effects of run-off are well documented for the region's coral and seagrass habitats, the ecological impacts on estuaries, the direct recipients of run-off, are less known. This is particularly true for fish communities, which are shaped by the physico-chemical properties of coastal waterways that vary greatly in tropical regions. To address this knowledge gap, we used environmental DNA (eDNA) metabarcoding to examine fish assemblages at four locations (three estuaries and a harbour) subjected to varying levels of agricultural run-off during a wet and dry season. Pesticide and nutrient concentrations were markedly elevated during the sampled wet season with the influx of freshwater and agricultural run-off. Fish taxa richness significantly decreased in all three estuaries (F = 164.73, P = <0.001), along with pronounced changes in community composition (F = 46.68, P = 0.001) associated with environmental variables (largely salinity: 27.48% contribution to total variance). In contrast, the nearby Mackay Harbour exhibited a far more stable community structure, with no marked changes in fish assemblages observed between the sampled seasons. Among the four sampled locations, variation in fish community composition was more pronounced within the wet season (F = 2.5, P = 0.001). Notably, variation in the wet season was significantly correlated with agricultural contaminants (phosphorus: 6.25%, pesticides: 5.22%) alongside environmental variables (salinity: 5.61%, DOC: 5.57%). Historically contaminated and relatively unimpacted estuaries each demonstrated distinct fish communities, reflecting their associated catchment use. Most of the available data on diffusion in natural clayey rocks consider tracer diffusion in the absence of a salinity gradient despite the fact that such gradients are frequently found in natural and engineered subsurface environments. To assess the role of such gradients on the diffusion properties of clayey materials, through-diffusion experiments were carried out in the presence and absence of a salinity gradient using salt-diffusion and radioisotope tracer techniques. The experiments were carried out with vermiculite samples that contained equal proportions of interparticle and interlayer porosities so as to assess also the role played by the two types of porosities on the diffusion of water and ions. Data were interpreted using both a classical Fickian diffusion model and with a reactive transport code, CrunchClay that can handle multi-porosity diffusion processes in the presence of charged surfaces. Background: Soil salinization threatens food security and ecosystem health, and is one of the important drivers to the degradation of many ecosystems around the world. Soil microorganisms have extremely high diversity and participate in a variety of key ecological processes. They are important guarantees for soil health and sustainable ecosystem development. However, our understanding of the diversity and function of soil microorganisms under the change of increased soil salinization is fragmented., Aim of Review: Here, we summarize the changes in soil microbial diversity and function under the influence of soil salinization in diverse natural ecosystems. We particularly focus on the diversity of soil bacteria and fungi under salt stress and the changes in their emerging functions (such as their mediated biogeochemical processes). In this study, a pilot-scale anaerobic membrane bioreactor (AnMBR) was developed to continuously produce volatile fatty acids (VFAs) from kitchen waste slurry under an alkaline condition. The alkaline fermentation effectively suppressed methanogenesis, thus achieving high VFAs production of 60.3 g/L. Acetic acid, propionic acid, and butyric acid accounted for over 95.0 % of the total VFAs. The VFAs yield, productivity, and chemical oxygen demand (COD) recovery efficiency reached 0.5 g/g-COD influent , 6.0 kg/m 3 /d, and 62.8 %, respectively. Moreover, the COD VFAs /COD effluent ratio exceeded 96.0 %, and the COD VFAs /NH 3 -N ratio through ammonia distillation reached up to 192.5. The microbial community was reshaped during the alkaline fermentation with increasing salinity. The membrane fouling of the AnMBR was alleviated by chemical cleaning and sludge discharge, and membrane modules displayed a sustained filtration performance. Previous studies have demonstrated that the salinity in the Levantine depends on the intensity of the Atlantic Water inflow. Moreover, its spreading eastward or northward in the Ionian is determined by the Ionian circulation pattern, i.e. by the Adriatic-Ionian Bimodal Oscillating System mechanism. The aim of this paper is to relate salinity variations in the core of the Levantine Intermediate Water flowing through the Sicily Channel to the salt content in the Levantine and its possible impact on the Western Mediterranean Transition (i.e. the sudden salinity increase in the bottom layer of the Algero-Provenc, al sub-basin occurring since 2004). From the historical dataset MEDAR/MEDATLAS in the Levantine and Northern Ionian, we present evidence of decadal occurrences of extreme salinities associated with the varying flow pattern of Atlantic Water over the last 60 yr. Furthermore, we show that the salinity variations in the two sub-basins are out of phase. High-salinity events in the Levantine are a preconditioning for the potential occurrence of the Eastern Mediterranean Transient (EMT). However, there is no firm evidence of occurrences of EMT-like phenomenon prior to the one in the early 1990s. Cross-correlation between the salinity time series in the Levantine and in the Sicily Channel suggests that the travel time of the salinity signal is between 16 and 18 yr. From the timing of the Western Mediterranean Transition and the salinity maximum in the Levantine Intermediate Water core in the Sicily Channel we also conclude that the time interval needed for the signal propagating from the Levantine to reach the bottom of the Algero-Provenc, al sub-basin is about 27 yr. Between 2008 and 2010, the Arctic Oscillation index over Arctic regions shifted from positive values corresponding to more cyclonic conditions prevailing during IPY period (2007-2008) to extremely negative values corresponding to strong anticyclonic conditions in 2010. In this context, we investigated the recent large scale evolution of the upper Western Arctic Ocean based on temperature and salinity summertime observations collected during icebreaker campaigns and from Ice-Tethered Platforms (ITP) drifting across the region in 2008 and 2010. Particularly, we focused on (1) the freshwater content which was extensively studied during previous years, (2) the Near Surface Temperature Maximum due to incoming solar radiation and (3) the water masses advected from the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans into the deep Arctic Ocean. The observations revealed a freshwater content change in the Canadian basin during this time period. South of 80° N, the freshwater content increased, while north of 80° N, less freshening occurred in 2010 compared to 2008. This was more likely due to the strong anticyclonicity characteristic of a low AO index mode that enhanced both a windgenerated Ekman pumping in the Beaufort Gyre and a diversion of the Siberian rivers runoff toward the Eurasian basin at the same time. The Near Surface Temperature Maximum due to incoming solar radiation was almost 1 °C colder in the Southern Canada basin (south of 75° N) in 2010 compared to 2008 20 which contrasted with the positive trend observed during previous years. This was more likely due to higher summer sea ice concentration in 2010 compared to 2008 in that region, and surface albedo feedback reflecting more sun radiation back in space. The Pacific waters were also subjected to strong spatial and temporal variability between 2008 and 2010. In the Canada basin, both Summer and Winter Pacific waters influence increased between 75° N and 80° N. This was more likely due to a strong recirculation within the Beaufort Gyre. In contrast, south of 75° N, the PaW influence decreased indicative of the fact that they were not responsible for the freshening already mentioned, due to other sources. In addition, in the vicinity of the Chukchi Sea, both Summer and Winter Pacific waters were significantly warmer in 2010 than in 2008 as a consequence of a general warming trend of the Pacific waters entering in the deep Arctic Ocean since 2008. Finally, the warm Atlantic water remained relatively stable between 2008 and 2010 5 in the Canadian basin despite strong atmospheric shift, probably because of large time lag response. Atlantic water variability resulting from the presence of a warm "pulselike" event in this region since 2005 was still noticeable even if a cooling effect was observed at a rate of 0.015 °Cyr-1 between 2008 and 2010 in that region. Sea surface salinity (SSS) can change as a result of surface freshwater forcing (FWF) or internal ocean processes such as upwelling or advection. SSS should follow FWF by ¼ cycle, or 3 months, if FWF is the primary process controlling it at the seasonal scale. In this paper, we compare the phase relationship between SSS and FWF (i.e., evaporation minus precipitation over mixed layer depth) over the global (non-Arctic) ocean using in situ SSS and satellite evaporation and precipitation. We found that, instead of the expected 3-month delay between SSS and FWF, the delay is mostly closer to 1–2 months, with SSS peaking too soon relative to FWF. We then computed monthly vertical entrainment and horizontal advection terms of the upper ocean salinity balance equation and added their contributions to the phase of the FWF. The addition of these processes to the seasonal upper ocean salinity balance leads to the phase difference between SSS and the forcing processes being closer to the expected value. We conducted a similar computation with the amplitude of the seasonal SSS and the forcing terms, with less definitive results. Introduction: Salinity is a key variable in the dynamic and thermal balance of the entire climate system. To address the complexities of diverse terrains and fluctuating ocean waves, we commonly use free-surface models with quasistationary (e.g. height, pressure, or terrain following) coordinates for simulating salinity. In such models, the vertical grid dynamically adjusts with the undulation of seawater. However, this adjustment also occurs when freshwater enters or exits the ocean. Freshwater-induced salinity changes at the ocean's surface are artificially distributed to each vertical layer within a model time step. This means that the freshwater at the ocean surface instantaneously and directly affects the seafloor. This process is different from physical diffusion processes. The diffusion effects caused by the influx and outflow of freshwater have a very small impact on the seafloor. This error leads to salinity non-conservation and disrupts the vertical distribution structure of salinity. Previous studies have also addressed this issue with solutions such as the vertical Lagrangian-remap method. Method: This paper proposes a natural vertical distribution calculation scheme (NVDCS) which is different from the approaches of our predecessors. In the discrete formulation of the original ocean equations, freshwater flux is introduced to ensure salinity conservation. In each model time step, by calculating the seawater volume changes due to freshwater inflow or outflow, as well as the vertical grid changes caused by sea surface undulations, the aforementioned artificial error is eliminated from each vertical layer. Discussion: This scheme ensures that changes in the vertical coordinates of each layer result solely from internal oceanic dynamic processes, avoiding the instantaneous and directly impact of surface freshwater. Ultimately, the influence of freshwater is confined to the ocean surface. Results: This method is straightforward to implement and user-friendly. Sensitivity experiments indicate that in free-surface models, quasi-stationary coordinates introduce artificial errors. The proposed calculation scheme not only eliminates this error but also achieves a better vertical distribution structure than using virtual salt flux, while ensuring salinity conservation. Saltwater intrusion is an essential problem in estuaries that can threaten the ecological environment, especially in high-salinity situations. Therefore in this paper, traditional multiple linear regression (MLR) and artificial neural network (ANN) modeling are applied to forecast overall and high salinity in the Lower Scheldt Estuary, Belgium. Mutual information (MI) and conditional mutual information (CMI) are used to select optimal driving forces (DFs), with the daily discharge (Q), daily water temperature (WT), and daily sea level (SL) selected as the main DFs. Next, we analyze whether applying a discrete wavelet transform (DWT) to remove the noise from the original time series improves the results. Here, the DWT is applied in Signal-hybrid (SH) and Within-hybrid (WH) frameworks. Both the MLR and ANN models demonstrate satisfactory performance in daily overall salinity simulation over the Scheldt Estuary. The relatively complex ANN models outperform MLR because of their capabilities of capturing complex interactions. Because the nonlinear relationship between salinity and DFs is variable at different locations, the performance of the MLR models in the midstream region is far inferior to that in the downstream region during spring and winter. The results reveal that the application of DWT enhances simulation of both overall and high salinity in this region, especially for the ANN model with the WH framework. With the effect of Q decline or SL rise, the salinity in the middle Scheldt Estuary increases more significantly, and the ANN models are more sensitive to these perturbations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Distributions of surface water partial pressure of carbon dioxide (pCO2) were measured on nine cruises in the Delaware Estuary (USA). The Delaware River was highly supersaturated in pCO2 with respect to the atmosphere during all seasons while the Delaware Bay was undersaturated in pCO2 during spring and late summer and moderately supersaturated during midsummer, fall, and winter. While the upper tidal river was a strong CO2 source (24.6 ± 2.2 mol Cm-2 year-1), the bay was a weak source (1.8 ± 0.2 mol C m-2 year-1), the latter of which had a much greater area than the former. In turn, the Delaware Estuary acted as a relatively weak CO2 source (2.4±0.3 mol C m-2 year-1), which is in great contrast to many other estuarine systems. Seasonally, pCO2 changes were greatest at low salinities (0 < S < 5) with pCO2 values in the summer nearly three-fold greater than those observed in the spring and fall. Undersaturated pCO2 was observed over the widest salinity range (7.5 < S < 30) during spring. Near to supersaturated pCO2 was generally observed in mid- to high salinity waters (20 < S < 30) except during spring and late summer. Strong seasonal trends in internal estuarine production and consumption of CO2 were observed throughout both the upper tidal river and lower bay. Comparably, positive correlations between river-borne and air-water CO2 fluxes in the upper estuary emphasize the significance of river-borne CO2 degassing to overall CO2 fluxes. While river-borne CO2 degassing heavily influenced CO2 dynamics in the upper tidal river, these forces were largely compensated by internal biological processes within the extensive bay system of the lower estuary. Sea surface temperature (SST) and turbidity (T) derived from Landsat-8 (L8) imagery were used to characterize river plumes in the Northern Adriatic Sea (NAS) during a significant flood event in November 2014. Sea surface salinity (SSS) from an operational coupled ocean-wave model supported the interpretation of the plumes interaction with the receiving waters and among them. There was a good agreement of the SSS, T, and SST fields at the sub-mesoscale and mesoscale delineation of the major river plumes. L8 30m resolution enabled also the description of smaller plume structures. Sharp fronts in T and SST delimited each single river plume. The isotherms and turbidity isolines coupling varied among the plumes due to differences in particle loads and surface temperatures in the discharged waters. Recent studies have shown significant sea surface salinity (SSS) changes at scales ranging from regional to global. In this study, we estimate global salinity means and trends using historical (1950-2014) SSS data from the UK Met. Office Hadley Centre objectively analyzed monthly fields and recent data from the SMOS satellite (2010-2014). We separate the different components (regimes) of the global surface salinity by fitting a Gaussian Mixture Model to the data and using Expectation-Maximization to distinguish the means and trends of the data. The procedure uses a non-subjective method (Bayesian Information Criterion) to extract the optimal number of means and trends. The results show the presence of three separate regimes: Regime A (1950-1990) is characterized by small trend magnitudes; Regime B (1990-2009) exhibited enhanced trends; and Regime C (2009-2014) with significantly larger trend magnitudes. The salinity differences between regime means were around 0.01. The trend acceleration could be related to an enhanced global hydrological cycle or to a change in the sampling methodology. The volume of water enclosed inside flexible-wall mesocosm bags is hard to estimate using geometrical calculations and can be strongly variable among bags of the same dimensions. The French program Coriolis as part of the French oceanographic operational system produces the COriolis dataset for Re-Analysis (CORA) on a yearly basis which is based on temperature and salinity measurements on observed levels from different data types. The latest release of CORA covers the period 1990 to 2010. To qualify this dataset, several tests have been developed to improve in a homogeneous way the quality of the raw dataset and to fit the level required by the physical ocean re-analysis activities (assimilation and validation). These include some simple tests, climatological tests and a model background check based on a global ocean reanalysis. Visual qual ity control (QC) is performed on all suspicious temperature (T ) and salinity (S) profiles identified by the tests and quality flags are modified in the dataset if necessary. In addition, improved diagnostic tools were developed - including global ocean indicators - which give information on the potential and quality of the CORA dataset for all applications. This paper analyses the Eastern Mediterranean water and heat balances over a 52-yr period. The modelling uses a process-oriented approach resolving the one-dimensional equations of momentum, heat, and salt conservation, with turbulence modelled using a two-equation model. The exchange through the Sicily Channel connecting the Eastern and Western basins is calculated from satellite altimeter data. The results illustrates that calculated surface temperature and salinity follow the reanalysed data well and with biases of -0.4 °C and -0.004, respectively. Monthly and yearly temperature and salinity cycles are also satisfactory simulated. Reanalysed data and calculated water mass structure and heat balance components are in good agreement, indicating that the air-sea interaction and the turbulent mixing are realistically simulated. The study illustrates that the water balance in the Eastern Mediterranean basin is controlled by the difference between inflows/outflows through the Sicily Channel and by the net precipitation rates. The heat balance is controlled by the heat loss from the water surface, sun radiation into the sea, and heat flow through the Sicily Channel, the first two displaying both climate trends. The Black Sea coastal nowcasting and forecasting system was built within the framework of EU FP6 ECOOP project for five regions: the south-western basin along the coasts of Bulgaria and Turkey, the North-Western shelf along the Romanian and Ukrainian coasts, coastal zone around of the Crimea peninsula, the north-eastern Russian coastal zone and the coastal zone of Georgia. The system operates in the real-time mode during the ECOOP project and afterwards. The forecasts include temperature, salinity and current velocity fields. Strains of the coccolithophore Emiliania huxleyi (Haptophyta) collected from the subarctic North Pacific and Arctic Oceans during the R/V MIRAI cruise in 2010 (MR10-05) were established as clone cultures and have been maintained in the laboratory at 15 °C and 32 ‰ salinity. To study the physiological responses of coccolith formation to changes in temperature and salinity, growth experiments and morphometric investigations were performed on two strains of MR57N isolated from the northern Bering Sea (56°58' N, 167°11' W) and MR70N at the Chukchi Sea (69°99' N, 168° W). This is the first report of a detailed morphometric and morphological investigation of Arctic Ocean coccolithophore strains. The specific growth rates at the logarithmic growth phases in both strains markedly increased as temperature was elevated from 5 to 20 °C, although coccolith productivity (the percentage of calcified cells) was similar at 10-20 % at all temperatures. On the other hand, the specific growth rate of strain MR70N was affected less by changes in salinity in the range 26-35 ‰, but the proportion of calcified cells decreased at high and low salinities. According to scanning electron microscopy (SEM) observations, coccolith morphotypes can be categorized into Type B/C on the basis of their biometrical parameters, such as length of the distal shield (LDS), length of the inner central area (LICA), and the thickness of distal shield elements. The central area elements of coccoliths varied from grilled type to closed type when temperature was increased or salinity was decreased, and coccolith size decreased simultaneously. Coccolithophore cell size also decreased with increasing temperature, although the variation in cell size was slightly greater at the lower salinity level. This indicates that subarctic and arctic coccolithophore strains can survive in a wide range of seawater temperatures and at lower salinities due to their marked morphometric adaptation ability. Because all coccolith biometric parameters followed the scaling law, the decrease in coccolith size was caused simply by the reduced calcification. Salinity is one of the greatest challenges of successful agricultural production worldwide. However, seed priming might be efficient practice for enhancing seed germination and initial plant growth and development. This experiment was undertaken with the aim of assessing the impact of different priming methods on seed quality parameters and early growth of garden pea (Pisum sativum L.) cultivars under salinity stress. Pea seeds of three different cultivars were primed with water (hydropriming), KNO3 solution (0.5%), and PEG 6000 solution (-0.5 MPa) for 24h in the dark. Unprimed and primed seeds were germinated between filter papers saturated with 120 mM NaCl using the germination test. The results clearly showed that the examined parameters of primed pea seeds were substantially greater than the parameters of unprimed seeds under saline stress. Moreover, seed priming with KNO3 and PEG solutions were more effective in improving seed quality and initial growth in garden peas than hydropriming. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The upcoming Salinity Satellite, scheduled for launch in 2024, will feature the world's first phased array radar scatterometer. To validate its capability in measuring ocean surface backscatter coefficients, this paper conducts an in-depth analysis of the onboard verification flight test for the Salinity Satellite scatterometer. This paper provides a detailed introduction to the system design of the Salinity Satellite scatterometer, which utilizes phased array radar technology and digital beamforming techniques to achieve accurate measurements of sea surface scattering characteristics. The paper elaborates on the derivation of backscatter coefficients, system calibration, and phase amplitude correction for the phased array scatterometer. Furthermore, it describes the process of the onboard calibration flight test. By analyzing internal noise signals, onboard calibration signals, and external noise signals, the stability and reliability of the scatterometer system are validated. The experiment covers both land and ocean observations, with a particular focus on complex sea surface conditions in nearshore areas. Through the precise analysis of backscatter coefficients, the paper successfully distinguishes the different backscatter coefficient characteristics between ocean and land. The research results effectively demonstrate the feasibility of the Salinity Satellite scatterometer for measuring backscatter coefficients in a phased array configuration, as well as its outstanding performance in complex marine environments.
