The prevalence of bacterial infections presents a significant challenge in the medical field, demanding effective strategies to impede bacterial adhesion and growth on various surfaces. The conducted study investigates the efficacy of polyelectrolyte multilayerscomprising poly-(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH) and alginate (ALG)embedded with zinc oxide (ZnO) and copper oxide (CuO) nanoparticles (NPs) to inhibit bacterial adhesion on stainless-steel surfaces. Surface characterization involved zeta potential, contact angle, and roughness assessments. The effect of NP composition, size, and morphology in conjunction with polycation or polyanion terminating multilayers was evaluated against planktonic and surface-adhered Escherichia coli (E. coli) cells. Surfaces with the positively charged PAH-terminating multilayer displayed higher water contact angles (≈ 63°) than the negatively charged ALG-terminating multilayers (≈ 45°). Multilayers containing ZnO NPs showed a significant inhibition of planktonic E. coli growth, >99%. Moreover, complete growth inhibition of surface-adhered E. coli was achieved for multilayers containing both ZnO and CuO. Due to their larger specific surface area, rod-like ZnO NPs displayed higher antibacterial activity. The samples with ALG as the terminating layer showed more substantial antibacterial properties than samples with PAH as the terminating layer. Biocompatibility tests on immortalized human keratinocyte cells revealed good compatibility with multilayers incorporating NPs. In healthcare facilities, infections caused by Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) from textile materials are a cause for concern, and nanomaterials are one of the solutions; however, their impact on safety and biocompatibility with the human body must not be neglected. This study aimed to develop a novel multilayer coating with poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH) and immobilized ZnO nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) to make efficient antibacterial and biocompatible cotton, polyester, and nylon textiles. For this purpose, the coated textiles were characterized with profilometry, contact angles, and electrokinetic analyzer measurements. The ZnO NPs on the textiles were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. The antibacterial tests were conducted with S. aureus and biocompatibility with immortalized human keratinocyte cells. The results demonstrated successful PAH/ZnO coating formation on the textiles, demonstrating weak hydrophobic properties. Furthermore, PAH multilayers caused complete ZnO NP immobilization on the coated textiles. All coated textiles showed strong growth inhibition (2–3-log reduction) in planktonic and adhered S. aureus cells. The bacterial viability was reduced by more than 99%. Cotton, due to its better ZnO NP adherence, demonstrated a slightly higher antibacterial performance than polyester and nylon. The coating procedure enables the binding of ZnO NPs in an amount (<30 µg cm−2) that, after complete dissolution, is significantly below the concentration causing cytotoxicity (10 µg mL−1). Pears are abundant in bioactive compounds, which exert favorable effects on human health. The biophysical attributes of fruit cuticles are pivotal in determining fruit quality, storability, and susceptibility to mold growth. This study aimed to elucidate the biophysical properties of six pear cultivars, 'Conference', 'Celina', 'Abate Fetel', 'Packham's Triumph', 'Sweet Sensation', and 'Williams'. Two maturity stages, unripe and fully ripened, were investigated. Furthermore, the efficacy of trimethyl-chitosan-coated pear surfaces in preventing Penicillium expansum (P. expansum) growth was assessed. Basic maturity indices (CIE color, ethylene evolution, firmness, soluble solids), cuticle contact angle, roughness, and zeta potential were analyzed. Surface roughness was measured using an optical profilometer, hydrophobicity was measured via profilometry, and zeta potential was quantified using an electrokinetic analyzer. The 'Celina' cultivar exhibited the highest roughness, whereas 'Williams' had the lowest roughness. All the cultivars' cuticles demonstrated hydrophilic characteristics, with contact angles ranging between 65° and 90°. For pH values exceeding 3.5, all pear surfaces exhibited a negative zeta potential. P. expansum growth was the slowest on the 'Packham's Triumph' and 'Conference' cultivars. Treatment with trimethyl chitosan effectively inhibited P. expansum growth in the initial hours of incubation. In conclusion, diverse pear cultivars manifest distinct biophysical surface properties and varying susceptibility to P. expansum growth. The growth of P. expansum correlates positively with roughness, contact angle, and zeta potential. Debonding of zirconia cantilevered resin-bonded fixed dental prostheses (RBFDPs) remains the main treatment complication, therefore, the present in vitro study aimed to evaluate the effect of different surface pretreatments on the bonding of zirconia RBFDPs. Eighty milled zirconia maxillary central incisors, with complementary zirconia cantilevered RBFDPs, were randomly subjected to four different surface pretreatments (n = 20): as-machined (AM); airborne-particle abraded (APA); coated with nanostructured alumina coating (NAC); incisor air-abraded and RBFDP coated (NAC_APA). After bonding, half of each group (n = 10) was stored in deionized water (150 days/37 °C), thermocycled (37,500 cycles, 5–55 °C), and cyclically loaded (50 N/1.2 × 106). Load-bearing capacity (LBC) was determined using a quasi-static test. Additionally, finite element analysis (FEA) and fractography were performed. t-test and one-way ANOVA were used for statistical-analysis. Before aging, the NAC group provided superior LBC to other groups (p < 0.05). After aging, the AM specimens debonded spontaneously, while other groups exhibited comparable LBC (p ˃ 0.05). The FEA results correlated with the in vitro experiment and fractography, showing highly stressed areas in the bonding interface, cement layer, and in RBFDP's retainer wing and connector. The aim of this in vitro study was to evaluate the long-term stability of one-piece diameter reduced zirconia oral implants under the influence of loading and artificial aging in a chewing simulator as well as the fracture load in a static loading test. Thirty-two one-piece zirconia implants with a diameter of 3.6 mm were embedded according to the ISO 14801:2016 standard. The implants were divided into four groups of eight implants. The implants of group DLHT were dynamically loaded (DL) in a chewing simulator for 107 cycles with a load of 98 N and simultaneously hydrothermally aged (HT) using a hot water bath at 85 °C. Group DL was only subjected to dynamic loading and group HT was exclusively subjected to hydrothermal aging. Group 0 acted as a control group: no dynamical loading, no hydrothermal ageing. After exposure to the chewing simulator, the implants were statically loaded to fracture in a universal testing machine. To evaluate group differences in the fracture load and bending moments, a one-way ANOVA with Bonferroni correction for multiple testing was performed. The level of significance was set to p < 0.05. In the static loading test, group DLHT showed a mean fracture load of 511 N, group DL of 569 N, group HT of 588 N and control group 0 of 516 N. The average bending moments had the following values: DLHT: 283.5 Ncm; DL: 313.7 Ncm; HT: 324.4 Ncm; 0: 284.5 Ncm. No significant differences could be found between the groups. Hydrothermal aging and/or dynamic loading had no significant effect on the stability of the one-piece diameter reduced zirconia implants (p > 0.05). Within the limits of this investigation, it can be concluded that dynamic loading, hydrothermal aging and the combination of loading and aging did not negatively influence the fracture load of the implant system. The artificial chewing results and the fracture load values indicate that the investigated implant system seems to be able to resist physiological chewing forces also over a long service period. Apples have long been known for their beneficial effects on human health due to the presence of various bioactive compounds. It is therefore very important to understand the biophysical properties of apple cuticle that dictate apples' storability and quality. The purpose of this work was to determine the roughness, hydrophobicity, surface potential, and color of various autochthonous and new apple cultivars. The surface roughness was measured by optical profilometer, hydrophobicity by tensiometer, zeta potential by electro kinetic analyser, and surface color by chroma meter. Measurements reveal that the new cultivar Elstar has the roughest surface while the autochthonous cultivar Crown Prince Rudolph has the lowest roughness. Under normal physiological conditions, all apple surfaces were negatively charged, with Wax apple having the lowest and Crown Prince Rudolph the highest values; most cultivars had an isoelectric point at around pH = 3. The surfaces of the new cultivars were slightly more hydrophobic than those of the autochthonous. We conclude that autochthonous and new apple cultivars differ in biophysical surface properties, which might impact transpiration, bacterial/fungi adhesion and, consequently, apple storage and shelf life potential. Polyelectrolyte multilayers are coatings formed by the alternate deposition of polycations and polyanions on a charged surface. In this study we examined how the type of substrate affects a multilayer prepared from poly(allylamine hydrochloride) and poly(acrylic acid). Silicon and titanium wafers were used as substrates. Their properties were systematically studied using ellipsometry, tensiometry, atomic force microscopy and streaming potential measurements. Multilayers were built up at pH = 7 with tetramethylammonium chloride as the background salt. The growth of films was monitored by ellipsometry, while the morphology and surface roughness were determined by atomic force microscopy. It was found that the thickness of multilayers containing 10 layers on silicon is 10 nm, whereas the thickness of the same film on titanium is three times higher. It was shown that multilayers formed on silicon display a grain-like structure, which was not the case for a film formed on titanium. Such morphological properties are also reflected in the surface roughness. Finally, it was shown that, in addition to the electrostatic interactions, the hydrophobicity of the substrate also plays an important role in the polyelectrolyte multilayer formation process and influences its thickness and properties. The heat treatment of dental alloys prior to porcelain application/veneering has been proposed as a way to ensure sufficient oxide scale and to promote the porcelain's adherence in porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM) fixed dental prostheses. The present study investigates the relationship between the bond strength of the dental porcelain to selective-laser-melted (SLM) titanium and the temperature of the titanium's pre-oxidation. The SLM Ti-6Al-4V substrates were airborne-particle abraded and either left to passivate in air at room temperature (control) or pre-oxidized in a furnace under vacuum conditions (10 kPa) at temperatures of 300, 600, 750, or 800 °C. The surface characteristics were determined using contact profilometry to measure the profile roughness (Ra), atomic force microscopy for the surface roughness (Sa) and Auger electron spectroscopy for the thickness of the oxide scale. Dental porcelain was applied to the metal substrates and the titanium-ceramic bond was assessed according to the ISO standard 9693-1:2012. The metal-ceramic interfaces were analyzed with scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive spectroscopy. The Ra and Sa values showed a strong positive correlation with the pre-oxidation temperature. The oxide scales covering the titanium surfaces thickened markedly at temperatures of 750 °C and above. However, the bond strength was negatively correlated with the pre-oxidation temperature. Room-temperature passivation in air following the airborne-particle abrasion of the SLM titanium resulted in a titanium-ceramic bond that is well above the ISO 9693-1:2012 recommended minimum value for metal-ceramic systems. There is a wide range of factors affecting bacterial adhesion and biofilm formation. However, in both food processing and medical settings, it is very hard to obtain suitably controlled conditions so that the factors that reduce surface colonisation and biofouling can be studied. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of glucose concentration, temperature and stainless steel (SS) surface roughness on biofouling by four common pathogens (Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and L. monocytogenes). Among the tested variables, the untreated SS surface (3C) was shown to be fouled more than 3D polished, brushed or electropolished SS surfaces. Although an array of parameters influenced biofouling, the most promising control measure was the influence of low temperature (4 °C) that reduced biofouling even in the case of the psychrophilic Listeria monocytogenes. The aim of this study was to analyse the adhesion ofE. coli,P. aeruginosaandS. aureuson food contact materials, such as polyethylene terephthalate, silicone, aluminium, Teflon and glass. Surface roughness, streaming potential and contact angle were measured. Bacterial properties by contact angle and specific charge density were characterised. The bacterial adhesion analysis using staining method and scanning electron microscopy showed the lowest adhesion on smooth aluminium and hydrophobic Teflon for most of the bacteria. However, our study indicates that hydrophobic bacteria with high specific charge density attach to those surfaces more intensively. Bacterial adhesion can be controlled by different material surface properties, such as surface charge, on which we concentrate in our study. We use a silica surface on which poly(allylamine hydrochloride)/sodium poly(4-styrenesulfonate) (PAH/PSS) polyelectrolyte multilayers were formed. The corresponding surface roughness and hydrophobicity were determined by atomic force microscopy and tensiometry. The surface charge was examined by the zeta potential measurements of silica particles covered with polyelectrolyte multilayers, whereby ionic strength and polyelectrolyte concentrations significantly influenced the build-up process. For adhesion experiments, we used the bacterium Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The extent of adhered bacteria on the surface was determined by scanning electron microscopy. The results showed that the extent of adhered bacteria mostly depends on the type of terminating polyelectrolyte layer, since relatively low differences in surface roughness and hydrophobicity were obtained. In the case of polyelectrolyte multilayers terminating with a positively charged layer, bacterial adhesion was more pronounced than in the case when the polyelectrolyte layer was negatively charged. The sensitivity of two commercial metal oxide (MOx) sensors to ethylene is tested at different relative humidities. One sensor (MiCS-5914) is based on tungsten oxide, the other (MQ-3) on tin oxide. Both sensors were found to be sensitive to ethylene concentrations down to 10 ppm. Both sensors have significant response times; however, the tungsten sensor is the faster one. Sensor models are developed that predict the concentration of ethylene given the sensor output and the relative humidity. The MQ-3 sensor model achieves an accuracy of ±9.2 ppm and the MiCS-5914 sensor model predicts concentration to ±7.0 ppm. Both sensors are more accurate for concentrations below 50 ppm, achieving ±6.7 ppm (MQ-3) and 5.7 ppm (MiCS-5914). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Prosthetic and orthotic parts, such as prosthetic socket and inner sides of orthoses, are often in contact with human skin, giving bacteria the capability to adhere and form biofilms on the materials of those parts which can further cause infections. The purpose of this study was to determine the extent of bacterial adhesion of Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis on twelve different prosthetic and orthotic material surfaces and how roughness, hydrophobicity, and surface charge of this materials affect the adhesion. The roughness, contact angle, zeta potential of material surfaces, and adhesion rate of Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis were measured on all twelve prosthetic and orthotic materials, i.e., poly(methyl methacrylate), thermoplastic elastomer, three types of ethylene polyvinyl acetates (pure, with low-density polyethylene and with silver nanoparticles), silicone, closed-cell polyethylene foams with and without nanoparticles, thermo and natural cork, and artificial and natural leather. The greatest degree of adhesion was measured on both closed-cell polyethylene foams, followed by artificial thermo cork and leather. The lowest adhesion extent was observed on ethylene-vinyl acetate. The application of catheters to the urinary tract is associated with nosocomial infections. Such infections are one of the most common types of infections in hospitals and health care facilities and can lead to numerous medical complications. Therefore, the understanding of the properties of urinary catheter surfaces and their potential modifications are crucial in order to reduce bacterial adhesion and subsequent biofilm formation. In our study, we consider standard polyvinyl chloride (PVC) catheter surfaces and compare their properties with the properties of the same surfaces coated with poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride)/poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfonate) (PDADMA/PSS) polyelectrolyte multilayers. Uncoated and coated surfaces were characterized by means of roughness, hydrophobicity, and zeta potential measurements. Finally, bacterial adhesion extent of uropathogenic Escherichia coli on bare and polyelectrolyte multilayer coated surfaces was measured. The obtained results show that on non-treated surfaces, biofilm is formed which was not the case for multilayer coated surfaces. The PSS-terminated multilayer shows the lowest bacterial adhesion and could be helpful in prevention of biofilm formation. The analysis of the properties of the uncoated and coated surfaces reveals that the most significant difference is related to the charge (i.e., zeta potential) of the examined surfaces, while roughness and hydrophobicity of the examined surfaces are similar. The aim of this study was to investigate and understand bacterial adhesion to different dental material surfaces like amalgam, Chromasit, an Co-Cr alloy, an IPS InLine ceramic, yttrium stabilized tetragonal polycrystalline zirconia (TPZ), a resin-based composite, an Au-Pt alloy, and a tooth. For all materials, the surface roughness was assessed by profilometry, the surface hydrophobicity was determined by tensiometry, and the zeta potential was measured by electrokinetic phenomena. The arithmetic average roughness was the lowest for the TPZ ceramic (Ra = 0.23 µm ± 0.02 µm), while the highest value was observed for the Au-Pt alloy (Ra = 0.356 µm ± 0.075 µm). The hydrophobicity was the lowest on the TPZ ceramic and the highest on the Co-Cr alloy. All measured streaming potentials were negative. The most important cause of tooth caries is the bacterium Streptococcus mutans, which was chosen for this study. The bacterial adhesion to all material surfaces was determined by scanning electron microscopy. We showed that the lowest bacterial extent was on the amalgam, whereas the greatest extent was on tooth surfaces. In general, measurements showed that surface properties like roughness, hydrophobicity and charge have a significant influence on bacterial adhesion extent. Dental restorations need to reproduce the aspect of the natural teeth of the patient, and must be non-toxic, biocompatible, and have good mechanical properties so that they can last for longer. The aim of this study was to determine the extent of bacterial adhesion of Streptococcus mutans on four different dental material surfaces, i.e., two glass–ionomer cements (Fuji conventional and Fuji hybrid) and two ceramic composites (Micro hybrid composite and Nano hybrid composite). To understand the bacterial adhesion on these four different dental materials, various surface properties were measured: roughness, contact angle, CIE color parameters and zeta potential. We found that the greatest adhesion extent was obtained for the Nano hybrid composite surface. The pronounced adhesion is the interplay between the relatively high roughness and hydrophilicity of the Nano hybrid composite surface. Color changes upon immersing ceramic composites in red wine and black tea proved that both beverages adhered to them. Black tea adhered more intensively than wine, and showed a higher inhibitory effect on the growth of Streptococcus mutans and Staphylococcus aureus. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study presents a fabrication route for an electrically conductive ZrO2–TiN ceramic nanocomposite with a nanoscale TiN phase occupying ≤30 vol% to improve the mechanical reinforcement of the zirconia matrix, and at the same time provide electrical conductivity to facilitate electro-discharge machining (EDM). The TiN nanoparticles were incorporated into a 3 mol% yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia (Y-TZP) powder, either by admixing a TiN nanopowder (MCP) or by using in-situ synthesis (ISS) via the forced hydrolysis of a titanyl sulphate aqueous solution and the direct nitriding of as-synthesized titania nanoparticles, followed by consolidation and rapid sintering in a spark plasma sintering (SPS) system. The initial phase composition and crystal structure of the as-synthesized powders and the sintered samples were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray difraction (XRD). The influence of the different fabrication routes on the microstructural evolution, electrical and mechanical properties, and affinity for EDM were assessed using TEM, focused ion beam scanning electron microscopy (FIB-SEM, Vickers indentation, electrical conductivity measurements, and profilometry. The MCP synthesis route resulted in finer microstructures that are less prone to microstructural inhomogeneities; however, using the ISS route, it was possible to fabricate electrically conductive Y-TZP nanocomposites containing only 15 vol% of the TiN nanoparticulate phase. Both synthesis routes resulted in an increase of the fracture toughness with an increase of the TiN phase due to the nanoparticulate TiN reinforcement of the Y-TZP ceramic matrix via crack-bridging toughening mechanisms. As both synthesis routes yielded Y-TZP nanocomposites capable of successful EDM machining at a TiN content of ≥30 vol% for the MCP and ≥ 15 vol% TiN for the ISS, a possible mechanism was developed based on the microstructure evolution and grain growth. Bacterial adhesion can be dictated by different surface characteristics. In this study we concentrate on the surface roughness of a stainless steel material. We prepared the stainless steel surfaces by 3D polishing, brushing, grinding and electropolishing. Untreated stainless steel surfaces were also considered. The corresponding surface roughness was assessed by profilometry and atomic force microscopy. In experiments we have used different types of bacteria. The rate of adhered bacteria on metal surfaces was determined spectrophotometrically. The results showed that the rate of adhered bacteria increases with increasing surface roughness. Scanning electron microscopy was used to image surfaces in order to determine locations of adhered bacteria. The increased adhesion of bacteria on more rough surfaces results from an increased interplay between the increasing effective surface area and increasing numbers of cracks, voids and gaps. Layered double oxide (LDO) photocatalyst microparticles were synthetized with special radial lamellar orientation. We presented that the 25.31 ± 2.34 μm LDO particles with rough surface can incorporated in fluoropolymer solution and resulted a composite layer with dual superhydrophobic and photocatalytic properties with high bacterial adhesion and inactivation ability. Next the LDO content in the composite layers were systematically increased (0, 20, 40, 60, 80 and 100 wt% LDO) which facilitated the surface adhesion of bacteria by electrostatic interactions. The structure of the initial LDO and LDO/fluoropolymer composites was verified by small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), XRD and SEM measurements. We showed that the surface roughness and hydrophobicity increase with increasing LDO loading. At 80/20 wt% LDO/fluoropolymer ratio the apparent surface energy was low enough to obtain a superhydrophobic surface (θ w = 156.3° and γ s tot = 2.7 mJ/m2). The bacterial adhesion extent on LDO/fluoropolymer composite layers increases with increasing LDO content because the adhesion takes place preferentially to LDO lamellae. The reason for this pronounced adhesion of negatively charged and hydrophilic bacteria onto positively charged and hydrophilic LDO surfaces is the electrostatic attraction between oppositely charged surfaces. The bacterial adhesion was detected by scanning electron and fluorescence microscopy and crystal violet staining assay. Finally, the adhered bacteria were inactivated by the LED-light illumination due to photoreactivity of LDO particles containing 12 wt% of ZnO phase. • The composition of nanoparticles affects their surface charge density. • Addition of GA increases size of Z and Z/R NPs. • Interactions with GA are the most intensive at pH = 4 for both Z and Z/R NPs. The objective of this study was to investigate interactions of zein (Z) and zein/rosin (Z/R) nanoparticles with gum arabic (GA), at different pH. Nanoparticles were firstly prepared by antisolvent precipitation of biopolymers from aqueous ethanol solutions. Nanoparticles suspensions were then dialyzed against water in order to remove ethanol and other impurities, and water suspensions of zein and zein/rosin nanoparticles were obtained. It was shown that composition of nanoparticles affects their surface charge density. Zeta potential of nanoparticles was positive without GA and changed to negative after addition of GA, at all pH tested. SEM analysis proved both Z and Z/R nanoparticles to be spherical and in size around 200 nm. The effect of addition of GA on particle size was determined using dynamic light scattering method. It was found that addition of GA increases size of nanoparticles at pH = 4 and pH = 5.5, from 150 – 220 nm to 250 – 320 nm. However, at pH = 3 it causes aggregation process, and diameter of particles increases up to few micrometres. Isothermal titration calorimetry was used to measure enthalpy changes in reaction between Z or Z/R nanoparticles and GA. Results showed that reaction between GA and Z or Z/R NPs is exothermic at each pH tested, except for Z NPs at pH = 3, where it was endothermic. At presented pHs, Z/R NPs were less charged compared to Z NPs, and their surface get saturated with GA molecules more rapidly. Here we present a research of bacterial adhesion to two most often used materials in modern kitchens, namely food grade ceramics and Teflon. To test the bacterial adhesion on kitchen worktops Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Campylobacter jejuni were used as the most common foodborne contaminants. Contact angle, roughness and streaming potential measurements were used for surface characterization. Crystal violet staining and scanning electron microscopy were applied for bacterial adhesion analysis. We showed that the adhesion of tested bacteria strains was lower on the Teflon surface compared to the ceramics. The hydrophobicity of the surface substantially contributed to the bacterial adhesion rate.
