The wars of the 21st century are not the first media wars, and many tropes and schema have long histories, particularly propaganda and the othering of a purported enemy. What is new today is that although mass media remains a central and hegemonic source of insight and perspective, citizen journalism, social media, spreadable media, and surveillant, data-driven media have grown in significance at an exponential level, adding a layer of complexity. In this article, we focus on disparity in media coverage and make the point that media and information literacy provide a valuable set of lenses from which to view a cluster of news and social media accounts taken from the government, mainstream media, alternative media, and the DIY mediasphere of the social media. It centers on two conflicts that receive little media exposure--the Nagorno-Karabash conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan and the internal Anglo-Francophone conflict in Cameroon. It also offers examples of classroom activities that could be adapted and modified to most educational settings.

Abstract Background Hypoglycaemia and hyperglycaemia may develop during anaesthesia and surgery in children and can lead to severe adverse clinical outcomes. No study, as far as we know, has investigated glucose homeostasis in children undergoing surgery in Malawi. The aim of this study was to assess perioperative glucose levels of the children undergoing anaesthesia at Mercy James Centre (MJC) for Paediatric Surgery, Blantyre, Malawi. Methodology This was an observational cross-sectional study. We looked at 100 children aged 1 day to 15 years anaesthetised at MJC. Data were analysed using SPSS 28. Student t test and Analysis of the variance (ANOVA) were used to compare means. The level of significance was 5%. Results Male children represented 68%. The median age was 2.2 years. Sixten percents of patient were underweight. Fasting times were prolonged for 87%. Maintenance IV fluid with 2.5% dextrose was given to 14%. Overall, there was a significant increase of glycaemia from induction of anaesthesia to the end of the procedure. Hypoglycaemia was rare. The mean fasting glycaemia was 99.04 mg/dL ± 1.8, 116.95 mg/dL ± 34.2 at 30 min into the procedure and 127.62 mg/dL ± 46.8 at the end of the procedure. Zinc (Zn) malnutrition is a major public health issue. Genetic biofortification of Zn in rice grain can alleviate global Zn malnutrition. Therefore, elucidating the genetic mechanisms regulating Zn deprivation response in rice is essential to identify elite genes useful for breeding high grain Zn rice varieties. Here, a meta-analysis of previous RNA-Seq studies involving Zn deficient conditions was conducted using the weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA) and other in silico prediction tools to identify modules (denoting cluster of genes with related expression pattern) of co-expressed genes, modular genes which are conserved differentially expressed genes (DEGs) across independent RNA-Seq studies, and the molecular pathways of the conserved modular DEGs. WGCNA identified 16 modules of co-expressed genes. Twenty-eight and five modular DEGs were conserved in leaf and crown, and root tissues across two independent RNA-Seq studies. Functional enrichment analysis showed that 24 of the 28 conserved modular DEGs from leaf and crown tissues significantly up-regulated 2 Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathways and 15 Gene Ontology (GO) terms, including the substrate- specific transmembrane transporter and the small molecule metabolic process. Further, the well-studied transcription factors (OsWOX11 and OsbHLH120), protein kinase (OsCDPK20 and OsMPK17), and miRNAs (OSA-MIR397A and OSA-MIR397B) were predicted to target some of the identified conserved modular DEGs. Out of the 24 conserved and up-regulated modular DEGs, 19 were yet to be experimentally validated as Zn deficiency responsive genes. Findings from this study provide a comprehensive insight on the molecular mechanisms of Zn deficiency response and may facilitate gene and pathway prioritization for improving Zn use efficiency and Zn biofortification in rice.

Abstract Objective This study aimed to assess health facilities’ readiness to provide safe surgical care during Ebola and COVID-19 era in Uganda and in the Eastern DR Congo. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted in selected national, regional referral and general hospital facilities in Uganda and in the eastern part of DR Congo from 1st August 2020 to 30th October 2020. Data was analysed using Stata version 15. Results The participation rate was of 37.5 % (72/192) for both countries. None of the hospitals fulfilled the readiness criteria for safe surgical care provision in both countries. The mean bed capacity of participating health facilities (HF) was 184 in Eastern DR Congo and 274 in Uganda with an average surgical ward bed capacity of 22.3 % (41/184) and 20.4 % (56/274) respectively. The mean number of operating rooms was 2 and 3 in Eastern DR Congo and Uganda respectively. Nine hospitals (12.5 %) reported being able to test for Ebola and 25 (34.7 %) being able to test for COVID-19. Postponing of elective surgeries was reported by 10 (13.9) participating hospitals. Only 7 (9.7 %) hospitals reported having a specific operating room for suspect or confirmed cases of Ebola or COVID-19. Appropriate Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) was reported to be available in 60 (83.3 %) hospitals. Most of the staff had appropriate training on donning and doffing of PPE 40 (55.6 %). Specific teams and protocols for safe surgical care provision were reported to be present in 61 (84.7 %) and 56 (77.8 %) respectively in Uganda and Eastern DR Congo participating hospitals. Conclusions The lack of readiness to provide safe surgical care during Ebola and COVID-19 era across the participating hospitals in both countries indicate a need for strategies to enhance health facility supplies and readiness for safe surgical provision in resource-limited settings.

Multi-trait (MT) genomic prediction models enable breeders to save phenotyping resources and increase the prediction accuracy of unobserved target traits by exploiting available information from non-target or auxiliary traits. Our study evaluated different MT models using 250 rice accessions from Asian countries genotyped and phenotyped for grain content of zinc (Zn), iron (Fe), copper (Cu), manganese (Mn), and cadmium (Cd). The predictive performance of MT models compared to a traditional single trait (ST) model was assessed by 1) applying different cross-validation strategies (CV1, CV2, and CV3) inferring varied phenotyping patterns and budgets; 2) accounting for local epistatic effects along with the main additive effect in MT models; and 3) using a selective marker panel composed of trait-associated SNPs in MT models. MT models were not statistically significantly (p < 0.05) superior to ST model under CV1, where no phenotypic information was available for the accessions in the test set. After including phenotypes from auxiliary traits in both training and test sets (MT-CV2) or simply in the test set (MT-CV3), MT models significantly (p < 0.05) outperformed ST model for all the traits. The highest increases in the predictive ability of MT models relative to ST models were 11.1% (Mn), 11.5 (Cd), 33.3% (Fe), 95.2% (Cu) and 126% (Zn). Accounting for the local epistatic effects using a haplotype-based model further improved the predictive ability of MT models by 4.6% (Cu), 3.8% (Zn), and 3.5% (Cd) relative to MT models with only additive effects. The predictive ability of the haplotype-based model was not improved after optimizing the marker panel by only considering the markers associated with the traits. This study first assessed the local epistatic effects and marker optimization strategies in the MT genomic prediction framework and then illustrated the power of the MT model in predicting trace element traits in rice for the effective use of genetic resources to improve the nutritional quality of rice grain.

Abstract Background General anaesthesia (GA) in developing countries is still a high-risk practice, especially in Africa, accompanied with high morbidity and mortality. No study has yet been conducted in Butembo in the Democratic Republic of the Congo to determine the mortality related to GA practice. The main objective of this study was to assess mortality related to GA in Butembo. Methods This was a retrospective descriptive and analytic study of patients who underwent surgery under GA in the 2 main teaching hospitals of Butembo from January 2011 to December 2015. Data were collected from patients files, anaesthesia registries and were analysed with SPSS 26. Results From a total of 921 patients, 539 (58.5%) were male and 382 (41.5%) female patients. A total of 83 (9.0%) patients died representing an overall perioperative mortality rate of 90 per 1000. Out of the 83 deaths, 38 occurred within 24 h representing GA related mortality of 41 per 1000. There was a global drop in mortality from 2011 to 2015. The risk factors of death were: being a neonate or a senior adult, emergency operation, ASA physical status > 2 and a single deranged vital sign preoperatively, presenting any complication during GA, anaesthesia duration > 120 minutes as well as visceral surgeries/laparotomies. Ketamine was the most employed anaesthetic. Conclusion GA related mortality is very high in Butembo. Improved GA services and outcomes can be obtained by training more anaesthesia providers, proper patients monitoring, improved infrastructure, better equipment and drugs procurement and considering regional anaesthesia whenever possible.

Abstract Background Standard monitoring during anaesthesia is a core element of patient safety and practice of safe anesthesia has reduced morbidity and mortality worldwide. The main objective of this study was to assess the practice of standard monitoring during anaesthesia in the hospitals of North Kivu, so as to establish a baseline overview of the situation, and orientate plans towards safe anaesthesia in the region. Methods This study was a cross-sectional survey of health facilities of the Health Antenna of Butembo in Democratic Republic of Congo and was conducted from October to December 2018. Questionnaires were brought to anaesthesia providers in the health facilities. The study included 1 answer from the anaesthesia practitioners who accepted to participate. The practices of standard monitoring in the health facilities were compared to WHO-WSFA guidelines. Data was captured and analyzed with Epi Info 7. Results Forty out of 90 health facilities (44.4%) of 10 health zones responded on the questionnaire. Twenty-three health facilities (57.5%) were from private sector and 17 (42.5%) from public sector. Sixteen health facilities (40.0%) were from the Butembo health zone. The median number of anaesthesia providers was 2 per health facility. Of all the anaesthesia providers, none were physicians, 47.5% were nurses practicing anaesthesia without any training in anaesthesia and 47.5% were nurse anaesthetists. All the health facilities were providing general anaesthesia whereas spinal anaesthesia was provided in 22 out of 40 centers (55%). Seventy percent (28/40) of the facilities were below standard according to WHO-WSFA guidelines. Only 40% (16/40) were using a pulse oximeter and 10% (4/40) declared that ECG was occasionally used. Conclusion The practice of standard monitoring is poor in health facilities of the Health Antenna of Butembo. Efforts should be made to improve monitoring which is a key element of safe anaesthesia.

Background Globally, critical illness results in millions of deaths every year. Although many of these deaths are potentially preventable, the basic, life-saving care of critically ill patients are often overlooked in health systems. Essential Emergency and Critical Care (EECC) has been devised as the care that should be provided to all critically ill patients in all hospitals in the world. EECC includes the effective care of low cost and low complexity for the identification and treatment of critically ill patients across all medical specialties. This study aimed to specify the content of EECC and additionally, given the surge of critical illness in the ongoing pandemic, the essential diagnosis-specific care for critically ill patients with COVID-19.Methods In a Delphi process, consensus (>90% agreement) was sought from a diverse panel of global clinical experts. The panel iteratively rated proposed treatments and actions based on previous guidelines and the WHO/ICRC’s Basic Emergency Care. The output from the Delphi was adapted iteratively with specialist reviewers into a coherent and feasible package of clinical processes plus a list of hospital readiness requirements.Results The 269 experts in the Delphi panel had clinical experience in different acute medical specialties from 59 countries and from all resource settings. The agreed EECC package contains 40 clinical processes and 67 requirements, plus additions specific for COVID-19.Conclusion The study has specified the content of care that should be provided to all critically ill patients. Implementing EECC could be an effective strategy for policy makers to reduce preventable deaths worldwide.

The search for and knowledge of the best conditions for anchoring the foundations of certain structures such as bridges, tunnels and quays in sedimentary estuaries is a challenge, for both scientists in general and engineers in particular. Indeed, wharves are structures that receive a lot of stresses and therefore require anchoring to avoid tilting and to guarantee their stability during service. This work, based on the analysis of data from seismic refraction methods, mechanical soundings and laboratory tests, characterises the terrain of the Wouri estuary in Central Africa. The objective is to determine and present the subsurface layers encountered as well as their characteristics, in order to define the best conditions for anchoring the foundations to ensure the stability of the quays to be built there. The seismic refraction campaign shows that the study area is relatively heterogeneous over the first 25 m, with velocities measured in the range 1520–1750 m/s; modulated in two distinct ranges, between 1520–1580 m/s characteristic of mud and loose sediments (alternating layers of clay, sand, loose silt) and the range 1580–1750 m/s corresponding to the signature of sandy-silty or compact clays. The mechanical tests show sedimentary soils, with alternating layers of sandy clay and clayey sand over the 42 m drilled, loose over the first 30 m in the bank area and over the first 15 m in the canal or dredge area, with a limit pressure of less than 1 MPa. Similarly, the soil samples taken and tested in the laboratory show that the soils are clayey over the first 30 metres, plastic and liquid with respect to their water content, respectively, below and above the liquidity limits, confirming their loose character. The results of seismic refraction, mechanical soundings and laboratory tests show that, in estuarine areas characterised by alternating sandy clay and clayey sand, there are not always hard formations in the first 25 metres of depth but, from a depth of 30 m, the soils become moderately compact and begin to form an anchoring layer sufficient to guarantee the stability of the quays against earth pressure forces.

In the present study, silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were synthesized using aqueous leaf extracts of three Congolese plant species, namely Brillantaisia patula (BR-PA), Crossopteryx febrifuga (CR-FE) and Senna siamea (SE-SI). The obtained AgNPs were studied for their optical, structural, surface morphological and antibacterial properties. The prepared AgNPs were characterized by using UV-Visible spectra, Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) and X-ray diffractometer (XRD). The synthesized nanoparticles were spherical shaped and well-dispersed with average sizes ranging from 45 to 110 nm. The AgNPs derived from BR-PA, CR-FE and SE-SI exhibited higher antibacterial activity against three bacterial pathogens of the human skin compared to their respective crude extracts and AgNO3. This indicated that the biomolecules covering the nanoparticles may enhance the biological activity of metal nanoparticles. Hence, our results support that biogenic synthesis of AgNPs from Congolese plants constitutes a potential area of interest for the therapeutic management of microbial diseases such as infectious skin diseases.

Une étude sur l’analyse socio-environnementale des indicateurs de la dynamique du climat vécus par la population riveraine de la Réserve Forestière de Masako a été réalisée dans le village Masako. 60 ménages ont été enquêtés sur base d’un questionnaire pré-élaboré. Les résultats révèlent qu’au niveau du village Masako, la population perçoit les changements climatiques à travers les indicateurs tels que les pluies précoces ou tardives, les vents violents, les chaleurs élevées, les érosions et les perturbations des saisons. L’impact le plus important de ces changements climatiques est perçu au niveau de l’agriculture où les cultivateurs évoquent le flétrissement des cultures par manque d’eau, la difficulté du brûlis pour des précipitations précoces et la prolifération des insectes ravageurs qui se traduit par une baisse de la production agricole affectant l’insécurité alimentaire des ménages. Mais d’autres secteurs comme celui de la pêche, la carbonisation et le petit commerce ne sont pas épargnés. L’ensemble de la population enquêtée note que les perturbations climatiques observées dans le milieu présentent des impacts négatifs sur les ressources de la Réserve Forestière de Masako tels que la diminution des produits forestiers autre que le bois (gibiers, chenilles, escargots, etc.). The construction of sustainable road and highway networks in the world, despite numerous feasibility, pre-feasibility and execution studies, are always confronted with the demands and vagaries of foreseeable and unforeseeable natural disasters. Studying cyclones, earthquakes, fracturing and landslide zones along roads is therefore a challenge for the sustainability of these infrastructures. In many countries around the world, the methods generally used for these studies are not only expensive and time-consuming, but also the results obtained are not always efficient. This work examines whether Landsat 8 (with a high cloud level) and SRTM data can be used in both equatorial and coastal Central Africa zones to produce relevant mapping, locating fracture and landslide zones, in order to contribute not only to a better road layout at lower cost and in a relatively short time, but also to a better prevention of geological disasters that may occur on its network. To this end, a map of the main road network was produced and validated with field data, as well as the maps of the main unstable slopes, faults and fractures zones intersecting the road or highway network. These approaches are useful for sustainable planning, management, monitoring and extension of roads worldwide, especially in Central Africa. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Melilotus is an important genus of legume plants and an herbage with excellent nitrogen fixation; it can tolerate extreme environmental conditions and possesses important medicinal value. However, there is limited genetic information about the genus; thus, we analysed four chloroplast loci (rbcL, matK, psbA-trnH and trnL-F) and one nuclear region (ITS) to determine the genetic diversity of 199 accessions from 18 Melilotus species. The rbcL and matK sequences were highly conserved, whereas the trnL-F and ITS sequences contained variable and parsimony-informative sites. In our analyses of the single and combined regions, we calculated the pairwise distance, haplotype and nucleotide diversity and gaps and then constructed phylogenetic trees to assess the genetic diversity, and our results revealed significant variations among the different accessions. The genetic distance values were between zero and nine, and based on the combined regions, the highest frequency value was approximately four. Melilotus showed high haplotype and nucleotide diversity, particularly in the ITS sequences, with values of 0.86 and 0.0087, respectively. The single ITS sequence, psbA-trnH, and the combined matK+rbcL+trnL-F (MRT) and matK+rbcL+psbA-trnH+trnL-F+ITS (MRPTI) regions showed interspecific variation in the gap analysis. Phylogenetic trees calculated using ITS, psbA-trnH and MRPTI sequences indicated distinct genetic relationship in 18 species, and these species could be divided into two groups. By determining the genetic diversity of plants, we can evaluate the genetic relationships among species and accessions, providing a basis for preserving and utilizing the genetic resources of Melilotus.

Disease resistant crop varieties are important for both disease control and for reducing chemical pesticide use. However, there is often a trade-off between disease resistance and yield. While the European Union has banned the use of some pesticides in agriculture, large amounts are still applied to various crops, including wheat. Market-based instruments could motivate farmers to adopt more environmentally friendly production methods. In this study we aimed to explore farmers' adoption of resistant varieties in different wheat price scenarios and their willingness to forgo yield when cultivating more resistant varieties. We conducted face-to-face interviews with 192 farmers using a choice experiment. Results showed that farmers preferred traits of yield stability (fungal disease resistance, lodging resistance and drought tolerance) over yield. Preferences for traits varied with the production system; livestock production was negatively associated with the importance of yield; cultivated land area was positively associated with protein content. The market price scenario did not change preferences. We calculate that farmers are willing to forgo more yield by cultivating highly disease resistant varieties than they are likely to recuperate from reducing costs of pesticides. Overall, we conclude that farmers' choices are based more on a combination of the production system, drought experience, climate change belief and the potential impact of further regulations to reduce the use of chemical pesticides than on the expected wheat price. Melilotus, an annual or biennial herb, belongs to the tribe Trifolieae (Leguminosae) and consists of 19 species. As an important green manure crop, diverse Melilotus species have different values as feed and medicine. To identify different Melilotus species, we examined the efficiency of five candidate regions as barcodes, including the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) and two chloroplast loci, rbcL and matK, and two non-coding loci, trnH-psbA and trnL-F. In total, 198 individuals from 98 accessions representing 18 Melilotus species were sequenced for these five potential barcodes. Based on inter-specific divergence, we analysed sequences and confirmed that each candidate barcode was able to identify some of the 18 species. The resolution of a single barcode and its combinations ranged from 33.33% to 88.89%. Analysis of pairwise distances showed that matK+rbcL+trnL-F+trnH-psbA+ITS (MRTPI) had the greatest value and rbcL the least. Barcode gap values and similarity value analyses confirmed these trends. The results indicated that an ITS region, successfully identifying 13 of 18 species, was the most appropriate single barcode and that the combination of all five potential barcodes identified 16 of the 18 species. We conclude that MRTPI is the most effective tool for Melilotus species identification. Taking full advantage of the barcode system, a clear taxonomic relationship can be applied to identify Melilotus species and enhance their practical production.

Plant growth and development depends on its ability to maintain optimal cellular homeostasis during abiotic and biotic stresses. Cleistogenes songorica, a xerophyte desert plant, is known to have novel drought stress adaptation strategies and contains rich pools of stress tolerance genes. Proteins encoded by Late Embryogenesis Abundant (LEA) family genes promote cellular activities by functioning as disordered molecules, or by limiting collisions between enzymes during stresses. To date, functions of the LEA family genes have been heavily investigated in many plant species except perennial monocotyledonous species. In this study, 44 putative LEA genes were identified in the C. songorica genome and were grouped into eight subfamilies, based on their conserved protein domains and domain organizations. Phylogenetic analyses indicated that C. songorica Dehydrin and LEA_2 subfamily proteins shared high sequence homology with stress responsive Dehydrin proteins from Arabidopsis. Additionally, promoter regions of CsLEA_2 or CsDehydrin subfamily genes were rich in G-box, drought responsive (MBS), and/or Abscisic acid responsive (ABRE) cis-regulatory elements. In addition, gene expression analyses indicated that genes from these two subfamilies were highly responsive to heat stress and ABA treatment, in both leaves and roots. In summary, the results from this study provided a comprehensive view of C. songorica LEA genes and the potential applications of these genes for the improvement of crop tolerance to abiotic stresses.

The objective is to determine and present the subsurface layers encountered as well as their characteristics, in order to define the best conditions for anchoring the foundations to ensure the stability of the quays to be built there. The seismic refraction campaign shows that the study area is relatively heterogeneous over the first 25 m, with velocities measured in the range 1520–1750 m/s; modulated in two distinct ranges, between 1520–1580 m/s characteristic of mud and loose sediments (alternating layers of clay, sand, loose silt) and the range 1580–1750 m/s corresponding to the signature of sandy-silty or compact clays. The mechanical tests show sedimentary soils, with alternating layers of sandy clay and clayey sand over the 42 m drilled, loose over the first 30 m in the bank area and over the first 15 m in the canal or dredge area, with a limit pressure of less than 1 MPa. Similarly, the soil samples taken and tested in the laboratory show that the soils are clayey over the first 30 metres, plastic and liquid with respect to their water content, respectively, below and above the liquidity limits, confirming their loose character. The results of seismic refraction, mechanical soundings and laboratory tests show that, in estuarine areas characterised by alternating sandy clay and clayey sand, there are not always hard formations in the first 25 metres of depth but, from a depth of 30 m, the soils become moderately compact and begin to form an anchoring layer sufficient to guarantee the stability of the quays against earth pressure forces. Multi-trait (MT) genomic prediction models enable breeders to save phenotyping resources and increase the prediction accuracy of unobserved target traits by exploiting available information from non-target or auxiliary traits. Our study evaluated different MT models using 250 rice accessions from Asian countries genotyped and phenotyped for grain content of zinc (Zn), iron (Fe), copper (Cu), manganese (Mn), and cadmium (Cd). The predictive performance of MT models compared to a traditional single trait (ST) model was assessed by 1) applying different cross-validation strategies (CV1, CV2, and CV3) inferring varied phenotyping patterns and budgets; 2) accounting for local epistatic effects along with the main additive effect in MT models; and 3) using a selective marker panel composed of trait-associated SNPs in MT models. MT models were not statistically significantly (p < 0.05) superior to ST model under CV1, where no phenotypic information was available for the accessions in the test set. After including phenotypes from auxiliary traits in both training and test sets (MT-CV2) or simply in the test set (MT-CV3), MT models significantly (p < 0.05) outperformed ST model for all the traits. The highest increases in the predictive ability of MT models relative to ST models were 11.1% (Mn), 11.5 (Cd), 33.3% (Fe), 95.2% (Cu) and 126% (Zn). Accounting for the local epistatic effects using a haplotype-based model further improved the predictive ability of MT models by 4.6% (Cu), 3.8% (Zn), and 3.5% (Cd) relative to MT models with only additive effects. The predictive ability of the haplotype-based model was not improved after optimizing the marker panel by only considering the markers associated with the traits. This study first assessed the local epistatic effects and marker optimization strategies in the MT genomic prediction framework and then illustrated the power of the MT model in predicting trace element traits in rice for the effective use of genetic resources to improve the nutritional quality of rice grain. Melilotus is an important genus of legume plants and an herbage with excellent nitrogen fixation; it can tolerate extreme environmental conditions and possesses important medicinal value. However, there is limited genetic information about the genus; thus, we analysed four chloroplast loci (rbcL, matK, psbA-trnH and trnL-F) and one nuclear region (ITS) to determine the genetic diversity of 199 accessions from 18 Melilotus species. The rbcL and matK sequences were highly conserved, whereas the trnL-F and ITS sequences contained variable and parsimony-informative sites. In our analyses of the single and combined regions, we calculated the pairwise distance, haplotype and nucleotide diversity and gaps and then constructed phylogenetic trees to assess the genetic diversity, and our results revealed significant variations among the different accessions. The genetic distance values were between zero and nine, and based on the combined regions, the highest frequency value was approximately four. Melilotus showed high haplotype and nucleotide diversity, particularly in the ITS sequences, with values of 0.86 and 0.0087, respectively. The single ITS sequence, psbA-trnH, and the combined matK+rbcL+trnL-F (MRT) and matK+rbcL+psbA-trnH+trnL-F+ITS (MRPTI) regions showed interspecific variation in the gap analysis. Phylogenetic trees calculated using ITS, psbA-trnH and MRPTI sequences indicated distinct genetic relationship in 18 species, and these species could be divided into two groups. By determining the genetic diversity of plants, we can evaluate the genetic relationships among species and accessions, providing a basis for preserving and utilizing the genetic resources of Melilotus. The study starts from a hypothesis on the coherence and compatibility of the legal instruments in force in Cameroon and in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) with the optimization of payment for environmental services (PES) and the preservation of environmental services. This study has employed a legal approach and interviews in order to investigate whether there is coherence and compatibility or not between the two variables of this hypothesis: (1) the legal instruments in force in Cameroon and in the DRC and (2) the optimization of PES and the preservation of environmental services. This study consists of three parts. The first part deals with the theoretical framework of PES and the place of PES in the legal order. In this first part, the definition of an optimal PES, the indicators of an optimal PES and the categories of legal frameworks on PES have been revealed. These are the fundamental elements to conduct a systematic analysis in the second and third parts. Based on these fundamental elements, the study analyses the legal instruments from international, regional (Africa) and domestic (Cameroon and the DRC) levels and investigates through field research two PES projects, one in Cameroon called "PES comminatory project" and another in the DRC called "REDD CBFF-Luki" respectively in the second and the third parts. From the analysis of these legal instruments and the investigation of these two PES projects, it has become apparent that there is a lack of coherence and compatibility between the legal instruments and these two PES projects in Cameroon and in the DRC, and the optimization of PES and the preservation of environmental services in the Congo Basin in general, especially in these two States. Polyamine and ethylene pathway genes (PEGs) are widely involved in regulating plant abiotic stresses. However, the PEGs in Cleistogenes songorica have not yet been thoroughly studied. In the present study, 17 polyamine-, 12 ethylene- and 6 S-adenosylmethionine (SAM)- related genes were identified at the genome-wide level in C. songorica. Phylogenetic analysis showed that genes in the ethylene and polyamine pathways and SAM family genes were not clearly separated. Promoter regions of these genes were rich in stress-related cis -regulatory elements. Several PEG and SAM genes coexpressed together and were responsive to abiotic stress treatment. In particular, qRT-PCR analysis showed that the expression of CsSAMDC2 increased under salt, dehydration and ABA treatment conditions. Arabidopsis plants transformed with CsSAMDC2 driven by a stress-inducible RD29A or constitutive promoter 35S exhibited enhanced dehydration tolerance and maintained higher chlorophyll content and photosynthetic capacity. The expression of CsSAMDC2 was generally higher in lines harboring RD29A::CsSAMDC2 compared to 35 S::CsSAMDC2 lines under drought stress treatment. Seed germination of RD29A::CsSAMDC2 or 35 S::CsSAMDC2 transgenic plants under salt stress treatment was superior to their wild-type counterparts, and the leaves of the transgenic plants exhibited a more compact structure. In addition, under salt stress, application of ABA improved lateral root development of RD29A::CsSAMDC2 Arabidopsis plants. The qRT-PCR analysis indicated that the expression of well-known abiotic stress-responsive genes AtPEGs, AtERF1 and AtRD29A, increased in both RD29A::CsSAMDC2 and 35 S::CsSAMDC2 transgenic Arabidopsis after drought, salt stress and salt stress plus ABA treatments. In this paper, we propose a new methodology to conceive a thinning scheme based on the parallel deletion of P-simple points. This scheme needs neither a preliminary labelling nor an extended neighborhood, in the opposite of the already proposed thinning algorithms based on P-simple points. Moreover, from an existent thinning algorithm A, we construct another thinning algorithm A′, such that A′ deletes at least all the points removed by A, while preserving the same end points. In fact, we propose a 12-subiteration thinning algorithm which deletes at least the points removed by the one proposed by Pala´gyi and Kuba (Graphical Models Image Process. 61 (1999) 199). Plant growth and development depends on its ability to maintain optimal cellular homeostasis during abiotic and biotic stresses. Cleistogenes songorica, a xerophyte desert plant, is known to have novel drought stress adaptation strategies and contains rich pools of stress tolerance genes. Proteins encoded by Late Embryogenesis Abundant (LEA) family genes promote cellular activities by functioning as disordered molecules, or by limiting collisions between enzymes during stresses. To date, functions of the LEA family genes have been heavily investigated in many plant species except perennial monocotyledonous species. In this study, 44 putative LEA genes were identified in the C. songorica genome and were grouped into eight subfamilies, based on their conserved protein domains and domain organizations. Phylogenetic analyses indicated that C. songorica Dehydrin and LEA_2 subfamily proteins shared high sequence homology with stress responsive Dehydrin proteins from Arabidopsis. Additionally, promoter regions of CsLEA_2 or CsDehydrin subfamily genes were rich in G-box, drought responsive (MBS), and/or Abscisic acid responsive (ABRE) cis-regulatory elements. In addition, gene expression analyses indicated that genes from these two subfamilies were highly responsive to heat stress and ABA treatment, in both leaves and roots. In summary, the results from this study provided a comprehensive view of C. songoricaLEA genes and the potential applications of these genes for the improvement of crop tolerance to abiotic stresses.
