Silurian myodocopes have been demonstrated to be the pioneer pelagic ostracods. Their ecological shift into the water column, during the middle Silurian (Wenlock-Ludlow), is now well documented from sites around the world, but the evolution of this fauna during the late Silurian (Pridoli) remains little studied. We recognise, for the first time, two ecologically distinct myodocope ostracod faunas from the same late Pridoli horizon (possibly ?Wolynograptus bouceki - Skalograptus transgrediens biozones) of southern Spain (Alcaracejos, province of Córdoba). One fauna, associated with black shales, comprises five species belonging to three myodocope families (bolbozoids, entomozoids and cypridinids). The other fauna, recovered from large dark-reddish calcareous nodules and associated with the planktonic crinoid Scyphocrinites elegans, comprises seven myodocope species belonging to the same three families and includes one new species, Calocaria callundosa sp. nov. Although the shale and nodule faunas have two species in common, they are clearly different in terms of diversity, abundance and size of the specimens. The discrepancies between these two assemblages could either be explained by sampling or taphonomic bias, or because they represent faunas with different ecologies. In the latter hypothesis, the myodocope association in the shales could represent the “background” planktonic fauna, while the fauna in the nodules could have lived in the water column in the vicinity of the Scyphocrinites “floating islands”, or scavenge around the dead crinoids on the sea floor. These two diverse assemblages also allow discussions on the temporal and palaeogeographical distributions of these late Silurian myodocope ostracods.

Middle Ordovician trilobites found in 11 fossil localities from the areas of Alpartir, Aladrén, Luesma and Fombuena (Zaragoza province), and south of Calamocha (Teruel province) are studied. Most records come from the Alpartir Member of the Castillejo Formation, which is dated as Dobrotivian in age (late Darriwilian according to the global scale), with the only exception of two localities that are slightly older, from late Oretanian age (mid−late Darriwilian). In the overlying Sierra Member, three additional localities are recorded, which have estimated age ranges from late early to late Dobrotivian (latest Darriwilian, possibly reaching the Sandbian). A total of 21 different trilobite species were identified including Uralichas hispanicus, Parabarrandia crassa and “Panderia” beaumonti that are recorded for the first time in the Eastern Iberian Range. The main trilobite assemblage from the Alpartir Member belongs to the Placoparia tournemini Biozone, which correlates with numerous areas of southwestern Europe, and here occurs in a biofacies dominated by asaphids. The scarce data derived from the Sierra Member do not allow to distinguish biozones, although the incipient development of a trilobite biofacies adapted to sandy bottoms is recognized, which ends at the top of the Placoparia borni Biozone in the whole of southwestern Europe. The correlation of the trilobite assemblages with those of other formations represented in the Cantabrian, West Asturian-leonese and Central Iberian zones is also discussed, the latter probably related through the enigmatic Central Iberian Arc, a debated orocline of the Iberian Massif.

The Ordovician documented in south-eastern Europe reflects different sedimentary environments, from shallow water to basin, belonging to diverse palaeogeographical domains. Some of these geological sectors and their palaeontological content have been well described for a long time, like the Carnic Alps, that represent one of the most continuous Palaeozoic sequence in the world. For some other areas, the quality of the data is variable and the knowledge is less detailed, sometimes with lithostratigraphic units still to be formalized, also reflecting the fragmentary nature of the outcrops. The Ordovician stratigraphy of diverse successions of south-eastern Europe has been herein revised and integrated with new data in the attempt of detecting a global scenario for this critical time interval in the evolution of life.

La revisión completa de más de un centenar de localidades fosilíferas del Ordovícico Medio situadas en el noroeste del Macizo Hespérico, muestra que el depósito de las pizarras y limolitas oscuras (Formación Luarca y equivalentes), que siguen a las cuarcitas del Arenig, no fue tan uniforme como se consideraba hasta ahora. Las pizarras se sedimentaron esencialmente durante el Oretaniense en la Zona Asturoccidental-Leonesa y en la parte septentrional de la Zona Centroibérica (Dominio del Ollo de Sapo), donde el techo de la unidad se sitúa muy próximo al límite Oretaniense / Dobrotiviense, sin existir ningún yacimiento paleontológico de probada edad dobrotiviense (= "Llandeilo inferior" en sentido clásico). En la Zona Cantábrica, la sedimentación arcillosa se inicia en el Oretaniense superior tardío y prosigue durante el Dobrotiviense. Para el conjunto del área estudiada se caracterizan, o proponen, diversas lagunas estratigráficas de alcance local o regional, y se discuten las circunstancias paleogeográficas generadas por las hipótesis más recientes, que son contrastadas a la luz de los nuevos datos paleoecológicos y paleobiogeográficos. Éstos indican que la sedimentación tuvo lugar en áreas externas y abiertas de la plataforma, relativamente más profundas que en la región surcentroibérica, con áreas de surco donde ingresan elementos mesopelágicos. Desde el punto de vista paleontológico, se reconocieron un total de 97 formas distintas (67 especies presentes en el Oretaniense y 45 en el Dobrotiviense), entre las que destaca la primera aparición conocida de determinadas especies de trilobites y ostrácodos, el registro más moderno de otros, y algunos taxones en común con Avalonia y Baltica, desconocidos hasta el presente en otras áreas del suroeste de Europa, A complete review of more than one hundred Middle Ordovician fossil localities, distributed within the north western part of the Hesperian Massif, shows that the sedimentation of the dark shales (Luarca Fo rmation and equivalents) that overlie Arenig quartzites with Cruziana (the 'Armorican Quartzite' facies) was not as uniform as it has been supposed for the whole NW Spain. These shales were mainly deposited during the Oretanian in the West Asturian-Leonese Zone and in nort h e rn Central-Iberian Zone (Domain of the Ollo de Sapo Antiform). In these zones, the top of the unit is close to the Oretanian/Dobrotivian boundary, without any fossils with proved Dobrotivian age. In the Cantabrian Zone, clay sedimentation started in the latest Oretanian and continued during the Dobrotivian. Several local or regional stratigraphic gaps are proposed and characterized for the whole study area. In addition, the most recent paleog e ographical recons t ructions proposed are discussed, in accordance with new paleoecological and paleobiog e ographical data. These data indicate that sedimentation took place in open shelf areas, relative ly deeper than in the southern Central Iberian shelf, and with trough areas where some mesopelagic elements are recorded. Tide- to wave-dominated shallow-marine clastic successions, preserving incidental bryozoan carbonates to the north, include fluvial deposits over the most proximal southern stretches of the platform. The boundary with Cambrian strata remains unclear but the latter are progressively less represented to the south in the undifferentiated ‘Cambro-Ordovician’. To the north, graptolites, brachiopods and trilobites combined with palynomorphs provide a robust biostratigraphic frame. Maximum flooding intervals occurred in the early to middle Tremadocian, middle Darriwilian and middle to late Katian. Two events interfered with an overall long-term transgressive trend. The ‘intra-Arenig’ (late Floian?) tectonic event highlighted palaeohighs coinciding with Paleoproterozoic basements. Gondwanan drainage basins were reorganized, which had an impact on sediment sourcing and distribution of detrital material (e.g. zircons) feeding the pre-Variscan Europe. The second event is the end-Ordovician glaciation. The domain supported the greatest part of the Hirnantian glaciers and may also have preserved pre-Hirnantian glacial archives. It is not until the very latest Ordovician that offshore conditions developed far inland; it is however suspected that this inundation benefited from a transient postglacial isostatic flexure.

The Anti-Atlas contains a thick, volcanic-free Ordovician succession that originally deposited in a passive-margin basin. Three main sedimentary packages are bounded by major unconformities: (i) the Tremadocian–Floian Lower Fezouata and Upper Fezouata formations, which unconformably overlie a palaeorelief of Cambrian rifting volcanosedimentary complexes, and are subsequently topped by a Dapingian para-conformable gap; (ii) the Darriwilian–Katian Tachilla Formation and First Bani and Ktaoua groups, the latter unconformably overlain by a Hirnantian glaciogenic succession; and (iii) the Second Bani Group, which subsequently infilled the former glaciogenic palaeorelief. Due to the scarcity of carbonate interbeds for etching analyses, leading to rare references of conodonts, the global Ordovician chart is interpolated on the basis of microphytoplancton (acritarchs and chitinozoans), regional graptolites and brachiopods. The Ordovician counter-clockwise rotation of Gondwana led its Moroccan margin from mid-to high-latitude positions, leading to the onset of a siliciclastic, wave-and storm-dominated platform. Flooding surfaces are marked by shelly silty carbonate interbeds that reflect the episodic development of echinoderm–bryozoan meadows during Katian times; in areas protected from siliciclastic input, they reached massive and bedded bioaccumulations (Khabt-el-Hajar Formation). The Hirnantian glaciation controlled the incision of numerous tunnel channels, infilled with both alluvial to fluvial sediments and glaciomarine diamictites. The Hirnantian palaeorelief was definitively sealed during Silurian times.

Ya se ha visto que la formación del Macizo Ibérico, donde aflora el basamento de la Península Ibérica, está íntimamente ligada al desarrollo de la orogenia Varisca del Paleozoico Superior. La consecuencia fue el acortamiento y deformación intensa de los sedimentos marinos depositados previamente a lo largo de los extensos márgenes continentales de Gondwana durante el Paleozoico Inferior y Medio. El Macizo Ibérico contiene los afloramientos más extensos y fosilíferos de cuantos componen la Cadena Varisca europea. Sus distintas zonas estructurales y paleogeográficas albergan importantes sucesiones estratigráficas de los períodos Cámbrico a Devónico (García-Cortés et al., 2000, 2001; Gutiérrez-Marco, 2006), que configuran uno de los contextos geológicos clave para conocer la evolución fini-precámbrica y paleozoica de la Península Ibérica y de Europa Occidental, y en donde se registran numerosos eventos geológicos y biológicos de alcance global.
