The Rieserferner Pluton was emplaced at a depth of 12-15 km into steeply dipping, greenschist-facies mylonitic rocks of the Austroalpine basement, just south of the Tauern Window (Eastern Alps). Intrusion occurred during north-south--directed shortening and east-west horizontal extension in front of the rigid Southern Alpine Indenter. The regional strain field is transpressive, with a strong coaxial component, and is characterized by east-west stretching. Tonalitic melt ascended through a feeder channel preserved in the steep southern part of the Rieserferner Pluton, within and adjacent to the steep mylonitic foliation of a major shear zone, the Defereggen-Antholz-Vals (DAV) Line. Melt ascent was perpendicular to the north-south shortening direction in the country rocks. Magma emplacement involved melt-induced hydrofracturing to form a subhorizontal, tabular pluton that protruded northward from the DAV Line into the previously folded country rocks. During the late stage of emplacement, buoyant upwelling of the partly recrystallized magma induced doming of the pluton roof as well as vertical ductile shortening of the directly overlying country rocks. Magma pressure therefore locally exceeded the lithostatic pressure. Thermal modeling constrains the maximum time for doming and solidification of the pluton to have been 32,000 yr. The wavelength of the domes in the pluton roof indicates the viscosity contrast between country rock and partly crystallized tonalite in the pluton to have been at least 100:1. In this study, 3‐D models of P‐wave velocity (Vp) and P‐wave and S‐wave ratio (Vp/Vs) of the crust and upper mantle in the Eastern and eastern Southern Alps (northern Italy and southern Austria) were calculated using local earthquake tomography (LET). The data set includes high‐quality arrival times from well‐constrained hypocenters observed by the dense, temporary seismic networks of the AlpArray AASN and SWATH‐D. The resolution of the LET was checked by synthetic tests and analysis of the model resolution matrix. The small inter‐station spacing (average of ∼15 km within the SWATH‐D network) allowed us to image crustal structure at unprecedented resolution across a key part of the Alps. The derived P velocity model revealed a highly heterogeneous crustal structure in the target area. One of the main findings is that the lower crust is thickened, forming a bulge at 30–50 km depth just south of and beneath the Periadriatic Fault and the Tauern Window. This indicates that the lower crust decoupled both from its mantle substratum as well as from its upper crust. The Moho, taken to be the iso‐velocity contour of Vp = 7.25 km/s, agrees with the Moho depth from previous studies in the European and Adriatic forelands. It is shallower on the Adriatic side than on the European side. This is interpreted to indicate that the European Plate is subducted beneath the Adriatic Plate in the Eastern and eastern Southern Alps. Plain Language Summary: Energy released by earthquakes is converted to seismic waves that radiate through the Earth. Here, we study two types of waves (P and S) in the Eastern and eastern Southern Alps (northern Italy and southern Austria). The aim is to investigate the subsurface structure beneath the mountains. The P‐wave and S‐wave propagate at different velocities between the earthquakes and seismometers. Given the origin time and locations of earthquakes, seismometer coordinates, and wave arrival times, we can calculate the P‐wave velocity (Vp) and the P‐wave and S‐wave velocity ratio (Vp/Vs) of the subsurface volume. Therefore, our velocity model allows for imaging the crust at unprecedented resolution. Moreover, an important structure within the Earth, the boundary between the crust and mantle or the so‐called Moho, can be inferred by the study of the waves. Our results show that during collision and formation of the Eastern and eastern Southern Alps, the lower crust of the Adriatic Plate thickened due to decoupling from both the mantle and upper crust within the orogen. The Moho is shallower on the Adriatic side than on the European side. A possible interpretation is that the European Plate subducted under the Adriatic Plate in the Eastern and eastern Southern Alps. Based on recent results of AlpArray, we propose a new model of Alpine collision that involves subduction and detachment of thick (∼ 180 km) European lithosphere. Our approach combines teleseismic P-wave tomography and existing local earthquake tomography (LET), allowing us to image the Alpine slabs and their connections with the overlying orogenic lithosphere at an unprecedented resolution. The images call into question the conventional notion that downward-moving lithosphere and slabs comprise only seismically fast lithosphere. We propose that the European lithosphere is heterogeneous, locally containing layered positive and negative Vp anomalies of up to 5 %–6 %. We attribute this layered heterogeneity to seismic anisotropy and/or compositional differences inherited from the Variscan and pre-Variscan orogenic cycles rather than to thermal anomalies. The lithosphere–asthenosphere boundary (LAB) of the European Plate therefore lies below the conventionally defined seismological LAB. In contrast, the lithosphere of the Adriatic Plate is thinner and has a lower boundary approximately at the base of strong positive Vp anomalies at 100–120 km. Horizontal and vertical tomographic slices reveal that beneath the central and western Alps, the European slab dips steeply to the south and southeast and is only locally still attached to the Alpine lithosphere. However, in the eastern Alps and Carpathians, this slab is completely detached from the orogenic crust and dips steeply to the north to northeast. This along-strike change in attachment coincides with an abrupt decrease in Moho depth below the Tauern Window, the Moho being underlain by a pronounced negative Vp anomaly that reaches eastward into the Pannonian Basin area. This negative Vp anomaly is interpreted as representing hot upwelling asthenosphere that heated the overlying crust, allowing it to accommodate Neogene orogen-parallel lateral extrusion and thinning of the ALCAPA tectonic unit (upper plate crustal edifice of Alps and Carpathians) to the east. A European origin of the northward-dipping, detached slab segment beneath the eastern Alps is likely since its down-dip length matches estimated Tertiary shortening in the eastern Alps accommodated by originally south-dipping subduction of European lithosphere. A slab anomaly beneath the Dinarides is of Adriatic origin and dips to the northeast. There is no evidence that this slab dips beneath the Alps. The slab anomaly beneath the Northern Apennines, also of Adriatic origin, hangs subvertically and is detached from the Apenninic orogenic crust and foreland. Except for its northernmost segment where it locally overlies the southern end of the European slab of the Alps, this slab is clearly separated from the latter by a broad zone of low Vp velocities located south of the Alpine slab beneath the Po Basin. Considered as a whole, the slabs of the Alpine chain are interpreted as highly attenuated, largely detached sheets of continental margin and Alpine Tethyan oceanic lithosphere that locally reach down to a slab graveyard in the mantle transition zone (MTZ). We perform a teleseismic P-wave travel-time tomography to examine the geometry and structure of subducted lithosphere in the upper mantle beneath the Alpine orogen. The tomography is based on waveforms recorded at over 600 temporary and permanent broadband stations of the dense AlpArray Seismic Network deployed by 24 different European institutions in the greater Alpine region, reaching from the Massif Central to the Pannonian Basin and from the Po Plain to the river Main. Teleseismic travel times and travel-time residuals of direct teleseismic P waves from 331 teleseismic events of magnitude 5.5 and higher recorded between 2015 and 2019 by the AlpArray Seismic Network are extracted from the recorded waveforms using a combination of automatic picking, beamforming and cross-correlation. The resulting database contains over 162 000 highly accurate absolute P-wave travel times and travel-time residuals. For tomographic inversion, we define a model domain encompassing the entire Alpine region down to a depth of 600 km. Predictions of travel times are computed in a hybrid way applying a fast TauP method outside the model domain and continuing the wave fronts into the model domain using a fast marching method. We iteratively invert demeaned travel-time residuals for P-wave velocities in the model domain using a regular discretization with an average lateral spacing of about 25 km and a vertical spacing of 15 km. The inversion is regularized towards an initial model constructed from a 3D a priori model of the crust and uppermost mantle and a 1D standard earth model beneath. The resulting model provides a detailed image of slab configuration beneath the Alpine and Apenninic orogens. Major features are a partly overturned Adriatic slab beneath the Apennines reaching down to 400 km depth still attached in its northern part to the crust but exhibiting detachment towards the southeast. A fast anomaly beneath the western Alps indicates a short western Alpine slab whose easternmost end is located at about 100 km depth beneath the Penninic front. Further to the east and following the arcuate shape of the western Periadriatic Fault System, a deep-reaching coherent fast anomaly with complex internal structure generally dipping to the SE down to about 400 km suggests a slab of European origin limited to the east by the Giudicarie fault in the upper 200 km but extending beyond this fault at greater depths. In its eastern part it is detached from overlying lithosphere. Further to the east, well-separated in the upper 200 km from the slab beneath the central Alps but merging with it below, another deep-reaching, nearly vertically dipping high-velocity anomaly suggests the existence of a slab beneath the eastern Alps of presumably the same origin which is completely detached from the orogenic root. Our image of this slab does not require a polarity switch because of its nearly vertical dip and full detachment from the overlying lithosphere. Fast anomalies beneath the Dinarides are weak and concentrated to the northernmost part and shallow depths. Low-velocity regions surrounding the fast anomalies beneath the Alps to the west and northwest follow the same dipping trend as the overlying fast ones, indicating a kinematically coherent thick subducting lithosphere in this region. Alternatively, these regions may signify the presence of seismic anisotropy with a horizontal fast axis parallel to the Alpine belt due to asthenospheric flow around the Alpine slabs. In contrast, low-velocity anomalies to the east suggest asthenospheric upwelling presumably driven by retreat of the Carpathian slab and extrusion of eastern Alpine lithosphere towards the east while low velocities to the south are presumably evidence of asthenospheric upwelling and mantle hydration due to their position above the European slab. Neogene indentation of the Adriatic plate into Europe led to major modifications of the Alpine orogenic structures and style of deformation in the Eastern and Southern Alps. The Giudicarie Belt is a prime example of this, as it offsets the entire Alpine orogenic edifice; its activity has been kinematically linked to strike-slip faulting and lateral extrusion of the Eastern Alps. Remaining questions on the exact role of this fold-and-thrust belt in the structure of the Alpine orogen at depth necessitate a quantitative analysis of the shortening, kinematics, and depth of decoupling beneath the Giudicarie Belt and adjacent parts of the Southern Alps. Tectonic balancing of a network of seven cross sections through the Giudicarie Belt parallel to the local NNW–SSE shortening direction reveals that this belt comprises two kinematic domains that accommodated different amounts of shortening during overlapping times. These two domains are separated by the NW–SE-oriented strike-slip Trento-Cles–Schio-Vicenza fault system, which offsets the Southern Alpine orogenic front in the south and merges with the Northern Giudicarie Fault in the north. The SW kinematic domain (Val Trompia sector) accommodated at least ∼ 18 km of Late Oligocene to Early Miocene shortening. Since the Middle Miocene, this domain experienced at least ∼ 12–22 km shortening, whereas the NE kinematic domain accommodated at least ∼ 25–35 km shortening. Together, these domains contributed an estimated minimum of ∼ 40–47 km of sinistral strike-slip motion along the Northern Giudicarie Fault, implying that most offset of the Periadriatic Fault is due to Late Oligocene to Neogene indentation of the Adriatic plate into the Eastern Alps. Moreover, the faults linking the Giudicarie Belt with the Northern Giudicarie Fault reach ∼ 15–20 km depth, indicating a thick-skinned tectonic style of deformation. These fault detachments may also connect at depth with a lower crustal Adriatic wedge that protruded north of the Periadriatic Fault and are responsible for N–S shortening and eastward, orogen-parallel escape of deeply exhumed units in the Tauern Window. Finally, the E–W lateral variation of shortening across the Giudicarie Belt indicates internal deformation and lateral variation in strength of the Adriatic indenter related to Permian–Mesozoic tectonic structures and paleogeographic zones. In this study, we analyzed a large seismological dataset from temporary and permanent networks in the southern and eastern Alps to establish high-precision hypocenters and 1-D VP and VP/VS models. The waveform data of a subset of local earthquakes with magnitudes in the range of 1–4.2 ML were recorded by the dense, temporary SWATH-D network and selected stations of the AlpArray network between September 2017 and the end of 2018. The first arrival times of P and S waves of earthquakes are determined by a semi-automatic procedure. We applied a Markov chain Monte Carlo inversion method to simultaneously calculate robust hypocenters, a 1-D velocity model, and station corrections without prior assumptions, such as initial velocity models or earthquake locations. A further advantage of this method is the derivation of the model parameter uncertainties and noise levels of the data. The precision estimates of the localization procedure is checked by inverting a synthetic travel time dataset from a complex 3-D velocity model and by using the real stations and earthquakes geometry. The location accuracy is further investigated by a quarry blast test. The average uncertainties of the locations of the earthquakes are below 500 m in their epicenter and ∼ 1.7 km in depth. The earthquake distribution reveals seismicity in the upper crust (0–20 km), which is characterized by pronounced clusters along the Alpine frontal thrust, e.g., the Friuli-Venetia (FV) region, the Giudicarie–Lessini (GL) and Schio-Vicenza domains, the Austroalpine nappes, and the Inntal area. Some seismicity also occurs along the Periadriatic Fault. The general pattern of seismicity reflects head-on convergence of the Adriatic indenter with the Alpine orogenic crust. The seismicity in the FV and GL regions is deeper than the modeled frontal thrusts, which we interpret as indication for southward propagation of the southern Alpine deformation front (blind thrusts). We investigate the evolution of the three‐dimensional thermal structure of a palaeo‐subduction channel exposed in the Penninic units of the central Tauern Window (Eastern Alps). Structural and petrological observations reveal a sheath fold with an amplitude of some 20 km that formed under high‐P conditions (~2 GPa). The fold is a composite structure that isoclinally folded the thrust of an ophiolitic nappe derived from Alpine Tethys Ocean onto a unit of the distal European continental margin, also affected by the high‐P conditions. This structural assemblage is preserved between two younger domes at either end of the Tauern Window. The domes deform isograds of the T‐dominated Barrovian metamorphism that itself overprints the high‐P metamorphism partly preserved in the sheath fold. Using Raman spectroscopy on carbonaceous material (RSCM), we are able to distinguish peak‐temperature domains related to the original subduction metamorphism from domains associated with the later temperature‐dominated (Barrovian) metamorphism. The distribution of RSCM temperatures in the Barrovian domain indicates a lateral and vertical decrease of peak temperature with increasing distance from the centres of the thermal domes. This represents a downward increase of palaeo‐temperature, in line with previous studies. However, we observe the opposite palaeo‐temperature trend in the lower limb of the sheath fold, namely an upward increase. We interpret this inverted palaeo‐temperature domain as the relic of a subduction‐related temperature field. Towards the central part of the sheath fold's upper limb, RSCM temperatures increase to a maximum of ~520°C. Further upsection in the hangingwall of the sheath fold, palaeo‐peak temperatures decrease to where they are indistinguishable from the peak temperatures of the overprinting Barrovian metamorphism. Peak‐temperature contours of the subduction‐related metamorphism are oriented roughly parallel to the folded nappe contacts and lithological layering. The contours close towards the northern, western and eastern parts of the fold, resulting in an eye‐shaped, concentric pattern in cross‐section. The temperature contour geometry therefore mimics the fold geometry itself, indicating that these contours were also folded in a sheath‐like manner. We propose that this sheath‐like pattern is the result of a two‐stage process that reflects a change of the mode of nappe formation in the subduction zone from thrusting to fold nappe formation. First, thrusting of a hot oceanic nappe onto a colder continental nappe created an inverted peak‐thermal gradient. Second, sheath folding of this composite nappe structure together with the previously established peak‐temperature pattern during exhumation. This pattern was preserved because temperatures decreased during retrograde exhumation metamorphism and remained less than the subduction‐related peak temperatures during the later Barrovian overprint. A further advantage of the method is the derivation of the model parameter uncertainties and noise levels of the data. The accuracy of the localization procedure is checked by inverting a synthetic travel-time dataset from a complex 3-D velocity model and using the real stations and earthquakes geometry. The location accuracy is further investigated by the relocation of quarry blasts. The average uncertainties of the locations of the earthquakes are below 500 m in the epicenter and ~1.7 km in depth when using the average VP and VP/VS models and the station-corrections from the simultaneous inversion. We study the crustal structure under the Eastern and Southern Alps using ambient noise tomography. We use cross-correlations of ambient seismic noise between pairs of 71 permanent stations and 19 stations of the Eastern Alpine Seismic Investigation (EASI) profile to derive new 3D shear velocity models for the crust. Continuous records from 2014 and 2015 are cross-correlated to estimate Green's functions of Rayleigh and Love waves propagating between the station pairs. Group velocities extracted from the cross-correlations are inverted to obtain isotropic 3D Rayleigh- and Love-wave shear-wave velocity models. Our models image several velocity anomalies and contrasts and reveal details of the crustal structure. Velocity variations at short periods correlate very closely with the lithologies of tectonic units at the surface and projected to depth. Low-velocity zones, associated with the Po and Molasse sedimentary basins, are imaged well to the south and north of the Alps, respectively. We find large high-velocity zones associated with the crystalline basement that forms the core of the Tauern Window. Small-scale velocity anomalies are also aligned with geological units of the Austroalpine nappes. Clear velocity contrasts in the Tauern Window along vertical cross sections of the velocity model show the depth extent of the tectonic units and their bounding faults. A mid-crustal velocity contrast is interpreted as a manifestation of intracrustal decoupling in the Eastern Alps that accommodated eastward escape of the Alcapa block. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We investigate a well‐preserved paleo subduction channel that preserves a coherent part of the European continental margin exposed in the central Tauern Window (Eastern Alps), with the aim of testing models of sheath fold nappe formation and exhumation. The subduction zone was active during Paleogene convergence of the European and Adriatic plates, after closure of the Alpine Tethyan ocean. New cross sections and structural data together with new petrological data document a recumbent, tens of kilometers‐scale sheath fold in the center of the Tauern Window that formed during pervasive top‐foreland shear while subducted at high‐pressure (HP) conditions (~2.0 GPa, 500 °C) close to maximum burial depth. The fold comprises an isoclinally folded thrust that transported relicts of the former Alpine Tethys onto a distal part of the former European continental margin. The passive margin stratigraphy is still well preserved in the fold and highlights the special character of this segment of the European continental margin. We argue that this segment formed a promontory to the margin, which was inherited from Mesozoic rifting. In accordance with classical sheath fold theory, this promontory may have acted as an initial structural perturbation to nucleate a fold that was passively amplified to a sheath fold during top‐foreland shear in the subduction zone. The fold was at least partly exhumed and juxtaposed with the surrounding lower pressure units by opposing top‐hinterland and top‐foreland shear zones above and below, respectively, that is, in the sense of a nappe fold formed during channel‐extrusion exhumation. We integrate structural, geophysical, and geodetic studies showing that the Dinarides‐Hellenides orogen along the Adria‐Europe plate boundary in the Western Balkan peninsula has experienced clockwise oroclinal bending since Eocene‐Oligocene time. Rotation of the Hellenic segment of this orogen has accelerated since the middle Miocene and is associated with a north‐to‐south increase in shortening along the orogenic front. Within the Paleogene nappe pile, bending was accommodated by orogen‐parallel extension, clockwise block rotation, and thrusting in the hanging wall of the Skhoder‐Peja Normal Fault (SPNF). The SPNF and related faults cut the older Skhoder‐Peja Transfer Zone with its pre‐Neogene dextral offset of the West Vardar ophiolite nappe. Rotation of the SPNF hanging wall involved Miocene‐to‐recent, out‐of‐sequence thrusting that was transferred to the Hellenic orogenic front via lateral ramps on dextral transfer zones. Along strike of the Dinarides‐Hellenides and coincident with the southward increase in Neogene shortening, the depth of the Adriatic slab increases from ~160 km north of the SPNF to ~200 km just to the south thereof, to several hundreds of kilometers to the south of the Kefalonia Transfer Zone. The geodynamic driver of tectonics since the early Miocene has been enhanced rollback of the Hellenic segment of the Adriatic slab in the aftermath of Eocene‐Oligocene slab tearing and breakoff beneath the Dinarides, which focused slab pull in the south. The SW‐retreating Hellenic slab segment induced clockwise bending of the southern Dinarides and northern Hellenides, including their Adriatic foreland, about a rotation pole in the vicinity of the Mid‐Adriatic Ridge. The AlpArray programme is a multinational, European consortium to advance our understanding of orogenesis and its relationship to mantle dynamics, plate reorganizations, surface processes and seismic hazard in the Alps-Apennines-Carpathians-Dinarides orogenic system. The AlpArray Seismic Network has been deployed with contributions from 36 institutions from 11 countries to map physical properties of the lithosphere and asthenosphere in 3D and thus to obtain new, high-resolution geophysical images of structures from the surface down to the base of the mantle transition zone. With over 600 broadband stations operated for 2 years, this seismic experiment is one of the largest simultaneously operated seismological networks in the academic domain, employing hexagonal coverage with station spacing at less than 52 km. This dense and regularly spaced experiment is made possible by the coordinated coeval deployment of temporary stations from numerous national pools, including ocean-bottom seismometers, which were funded by different national agencies. They combine with permanent networks, which also required the cooperation of many different operators. Together these stations ultimately fill coverage gaps. Following a short overview of previous large-scale seismological experiments in the Alpine region, we here present the goals, construction, deployment, characteristics and data management of the AlpArray Seismic Network, which will provide data that is expected to be unprecedented in quality to image the complex Alpine mountains at depth. Abstract: A new kinematic reconstruction that incorporates estimates of post‐20 Ma shortening and extension in the Apennines, Alps, Dinarides, and Sicily Channel Rift Zone (SCRZ) reveals that the Adriatic microplate (Adria) rotated counterclockwise as it subducted beneath the European Plate to the west and to the east, while indenting the Alps to the north. Minimum and maximum amounts of rotation are derived by using, respectively, estimates of crustal extension along the SCRZ (minimum of 30 km) combined with crustal shortening in the Eastern Alps (minimum of 115 km) and a maximum amount (140 km) of convergence between Adria and Moesia across the southern Dinarides and Carpatho‐Balkan orogens. When combined with Neogene convergence in the Western Alps, the best fit of available structural data constrains Adria to have moved 113 km to the NW (azimuth 325°) while rotating 5 ± 3° counterclockwise relative to Europe since 20 Ma. Amounts of plate convergence predicted by our new model exceed Neogene shortening estimates of several tens of kilometers in both the Apennines and Dinarides. We attribute this difference to crust‐mantle decoupling (delamination) during rollback in the Apennines and to distributed deformation related to the northward motion of the Dacia Unit between the southern Dinarides and Europe (Moesia). Neogene motion of Adria resulted from a combination of Africa pushing from the south, the Adriatic‐Hellenides slab pulling to the northeast, and crustal wedging in the Western Alps, which acted as a pivot and stopped farther northwestward motion of Adria relative to Europe. We used S-receiver functions (i.e. S-to-P converted signals) to study seismic discontinuities in the upper mantle between the Moho and the 410 km discontinuity beneath central Europe. This was done by using c. 49,000 S-receiver functions from c. 700 permanent and temporary broadband stations made available by the open EIDA Archives. Below Phanerozoic Europe we observed expected discontinuities like the Moho, the lithosphere-asthenosphere boundary (LAB), the Lehmann discontinuity and the 410 km discontinuity with an additional overlying low velocity zone. Below the East European Craton (EEC), we observed the Mid-Lithospheric Discontinuity (MLD) at c. 100 km depth as well as the controversial cratonic LAB at c. 200 km depth. At the boundary of the EEC but still below the Phanerozoic surface, we observed downward velocity reductions below the LAB in the following regions: the North German-Polish Plain at about 200 km depth; the Bohemian Massive, north-west dipping from 200 to 300 km depth; the Pannonian Basin, north-east dipping from 150 to 200 km depth underneath the western Carpathians and the EEC. We named this newly observed structure Sub-Lithospheric Discontinuity (SLD). At the northern edge of the Bohemian Massive, we see a sharp vertical step of about 100 km between the SLD below the Bohemian Massive and the North German-Polish Plain. This step follows the surface trace of the Rheic Suture between the continental Saxo-Thuringian and Rheno-Herzynian zones of the Variscan orogen. A preliminary interpretation of these features is that a prong of the cratonic mantle lithosphere penetrated the Phanerozoic asthenosphere during the continental collision at the western and south-western edges of the EEC. In-situ 40 Ar/ 39 Ar laser ablation dating of white-mica grains was performed on samples from the footwall of a crustal-scale extensional fault (Katschberg Normal Fault; KNF) that accommodated eastward orogen-parallel displacement of Alpine orogenic crust in the eastern part of the Tauern Window. This dating yields predominantly cooling ages ranging from 31 to 13 Myr, with most ages clustering between 21 and 17 Myr. Folded white micas that predate the main Katschberg foliation yield, within error, the same ages as white-mica grains that overgrow this foliation. However, the absolute ages of both generations are older at the base (20 Myr) where their grain size is larger (300–500 μm), than at the top and adjacent to the hangingwall (17 Myr) of this shear zone where grain size is smaller (< 100–300 μm). This fining-upward trend of white-mica grain size within the KNF is associated with a reduction of the closure temperature from the base (~ 445 °C) to the top (< 400 °C) and explains the counter-intuitive trend of downward-increasing age of cooling in the footwall. The new data show that rapid cooling within the KNF of the eastern Tauern Window started sometime before 21 Myr according to the 40 Ar/ 39 Ar white-mica cooling ages and between 25–21 Myr according to the new Rb/Sr white-mica ages, i.e., shortly after the attainment of the thermal peak in the Tauern Window at ~ 25 Myr ago. We aim to link fault kinematics along the orogenic front of the Eastern Southern Alps with deformation of the Adriatic indenter since Miocene time. The main structure in this area, the Schio-Vicenza Fault, is a steep fault system that trends NW-SE, perpendicular to the strike of frontal thrusts of the Eastern Southern Alps and oblique to NNE-SSW striking Giudicarie fold-and-thrust belt. This belt was active in Miocene time and offsets the main edifice of the Alps, including the Periadriatic Fault.The steep fault surfaces of the Schio-Vicenza Fault carry two generations of striations: (1) older subhorizontal striations with sinistral slip indicators; and (2) younger SW-dipping striations indicating oblique downthrow of the SW block. Faults with the Schio-Vicenza Fault trend can be traced NW to the end of the ENE-WSW-trending Valsugana Thrust. However, the Schio-Vicenza Fault does not merge with or truncate the Giudicarie Belt as shown on previous maps of the area.East of the Schio-Vicenza Fault, the orogenic front of the Eastern Southern Alps comprises the Bassano thrust system. This system is associated with an ENE-WSW trending ramp anticline that folds and tilts Mio-Pliocene strata. Southwest of the Schio-Vicenza Fault, the front comprises the Marana Thrust, which emplaces the Upper Triassic Dolomia Principale to the SSE onto Lower Cretaceous strata ('Maiolica'). Fault-slip analysis of this thrust and NE-SW trending fold axes indicate NNW-SSE shortening. At the SW end of the Marana Thrust, m-scale chevron folds in the footwall strata ('Maiolica') trend NW-SE, at a high angle with this shortening direction.Sinistral motion along the Schio-Vicenza Fault indicates that it acted as a clutch to accommodate differential Neogene-to-recent shortening associated with Adriatic indentation in the Eastern Southern Alps. NW-SE-directed shortening was greater NE of the Schio-Vicenza Fault along the Bassano Thrust than SW along the Marana Thrust. The observation that the Schio-Vicenza Fault terminates in the NW, near the end of the Valsugana Thrust, rather than merging with the Giudicarie Belt, indicates that the latter was kinematically decoupled from post-Oligocene shortening along the orogenic front. Together with the anomalously low seismicity just north of the Valsugana Thrust, this suggests that ongoing shortening is taken up between this thrust and the active orogenic front.The NW-SE trending folds in the footwall of the Marana Thrust do not fit with the typical Neogene Alpine ENE-WSW strike of folds and thrusts in this area and the timing of the thrusting is not well constrained. Work is underway to determine whether these folds represent a different deformational phase or formed due to interference with a local Oligocene normal fault. In addition, the oblique normal motion to the SW along the Schio-Vicenza Fault is inconsistent with Neogene Alpine shortening and could reflect flexural extension in the foreland bulge of the Apennines. The core of the Alpine orogen in the Eastern Alps (Tauern Window) experienced a change from orogen-normal shortening and post-nappe doming to predominantly orogen-parallel extension and tectonic unroofing during late Oligocene to Miocene northward indentation of the Adriatic Microplate. A new 147 Sm/ 144 Nd isochron age of 25.7 ± 0.9 Ma on a garnet-bearing assemblage from the lowest nappe complex forming a dome in the eastern part of the Tauern Window indicates that high temperatures related to post-nappe Barrovian-type metamorphism overlapped in time with the onset of doming. New 87 Rb/ 87 Sr biotite ages from this same complex combined with previously published 87 Rb/ 87 Sr white mica ages suggest that doming and exhumation began no later than 28 Ma immediately in front of indenting Austroalpine crustal blocks, then migrated laterally to the ESE during rapid exhumation and orogen-parallel stretching beginning at about 23 Ma. Rapid cooling ended at approximately 17 Ma in the footwall of the Katschberg Normal Fault, which delimits the eastern margin of the Tauern Window. A similar pattern of migrating doming, orogen-parallel extension and cooling is recognized in the western part of the Tauern Window, where rapid exhumation began at about 20 Ma, some 2–3 Ma later than in the eastern part. This difference in the onset of rapid exhumation as well as the overall migration of doming from the center to the ends of the Tauern Window are attributed to fragmentation of the aforementioned Austroalpine blocks along the leading edge of the main Adriatic indenter (Southern Alps) as this indenter advanced to the north.
