Hydraulic modelling of natural floodplain vegetation using leaf area index (LAI) has been applied successfully for non-submerged conditions whereas its suitability for submerged conditions requires further development. This study investigates the vegetative flow resistance at low relative submergences and extends existing LAI-based approaches building upon new flume data and prior experiences from field-scale applications. We provide advanced LAI-based formulas for modelling the flow resistance from emergent to submerged conditions, with water depth up to three times higher than the vegetation height. Such low relative submergences are highly relevant in hydraulic analyses of riverbank and floodplain flows but not adequately represented in existing formulas. The use of the deflected vegetation height as the characteristic height provided the most accurate modelling results, whereas the use of undeflected height resulted in significant errors. As a new development for submerged conditions, we proposed von Kármán scaling factor for improved model predictions. Overall, the results proved that LAI-based modelling is suitable also at low relative submergences for a wide range of vegetation densities (LAI = 1–5) and mean flow velocities (0.05–1.2 m s−1). For both emergent and slightly overtopped vegetation the JAR and VAS approaches outperformed the BAPmod-LAI approach that does not account for reconfiguration. For modellers, we provide a workflow and guidance on the use of the newly developed LAI-based formulas in 1D/2D hydrodynamic models for both emergent and submerged conditions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Reach-scale experiments simulating the physical characteristics of natural woody plants are required for the improved modeling of flow resistance in channels with instream and floodplain vegetation. The first aim of this study was to investigate the flow resistance caused by patches of foliated woody vegetation at low volumetric blockage factors (4% to 10%) under emergent conditions, as most studies on the effect of patchiness are limited to submerged aquatic plants. Experiments with nature-like willow patches were performed in a reach-scale outdoor flume, where the density and layout of the patches were altered. The bulk friction factors were based on the friction slopes, calculated using the water surface slopes and velocity heads measured by a set of high-accuracy pressure sensors under several flow conditions. Compared to unvegetated conditions, the patches increased the bulk friction factor by 1.7–5.5 times, depending on the patch density and blockage factor. The second aim of this study was to evaluate the performance of four momentum-based models in estimating the bulk friction factors in flows with such flexible patches. For this process, a methodological approach suited for patchy woody vegetation at reach scale was developed to determine the input parameters required in each model. Estimation results using the newly modified and parameterized formulas compared favorably to the experimental data, demonstrating more reliable performance for models explicitly addressing the reconfiguration of vegetation. Riparian plants exert flow resistance and largely influence the flow structure, which affects erosion, deposition and transport processes of fine sediments. Predicting these vegetative effects is important for flood, sediment and nutrient management. However, predictions on the fate of sediments are complicated by uncertainties associated with the suitable parameterization of natural plants and the associated effects on the turbulent flow field and on the variables in the transport equations. The aim of this study is to quantify deposition and transport of fine sandy sediment in a partly vegetated channel under laboratory conditions. Care was taken to reproduce conditions typical of vegetated floodplain flows including dense flexible grassy understory as a starting point. The experiments were conducted in a flume that is specifically designed to recirculate fine sediment. We measured suspended sediment concentrations with optical turbidity sensors and determined patterns of net deposition over the vegetated parts of the cross section. The flow field was determined with acoustic Doppler velocimetry. Our investigations are intended to improve future predictions of fine sediment storage and transport in natural or constructed vegetated channels, and the first results reported herein were useful in designing further, on-going experiments with complex combinations of vegetation and channel geometry. Vegetation notably influences transport and mixing processes and can thus be used for controlling the fate of substances in the hydro‐environment. Whilst most work covers fully vegetated conditions, the novelty of this paper is to focus on flows with real‐scale flexible willow patches. We aimed to investigate how longitudinal dispersion varies according to the spatial distribution, density and coverage of the patches and to evaluate the explanatory power of predictors that consider the hydraulics, vegetation and channel geometry. Salt tracer experiments were performed in a trapezoidal channel where we established 3–4 m long and 1–1.6 m wide patches of artificial foliated willows that reproduced the shapes and plant densities observed on woody‐vegetated floodplains. We examined sparsely distributed patches with low areal/volumetric coverage of 6–11%, and non‐vegetated conditions for reference. Flow depths and surface widths were 0.7–0.9 and 6–7 m, respectively, and the mean flow velocities ranged at 0.3–0.6 m/s. The emergent patches generated from a negligible to over a four‐fold increase in the longitudinal dispersion when compared with non‐vegetated conditions. The patches with a preferential location in low‐velocity areas, such as near banks, or with a high plant density and a blockage of the cross‐sectional flow area ⪆0.4, led to the largest dispersion and residence times. Patches under such configurations enhanced the normalized differential velocity defined as the difference between the highest (90th percentile) and lowest (10th percentile) cross‐sectional flow velocities divided by the mean velocity, thus increasing shear dispersion. As existing analytical predictors failed to estimate the effect of different patch configurations, we proposed the change in the normalized differential velocity between vegetated and corresponding non‐vegetated conditions as a basic predictor of the reach‐scale longitudinal dispersion coefficient under patchy vegetation. In contrast, we observed no clear relationship between flow resistance and dispersion. Thus, our findings indicated that bankside vegetation may allow for reduced peak concentrations and lengthened residence times, supporting pollutant management, while ensuring good flow conveyance. Riparian vegetation patches growing on river banks and floodplains influence in‐channel and overbank hydromorphological processes. The current knowledge on patch‐scale hydrodynamics is largely based on laboratory flume experiments with simplified vegetation. The aim of this study is to provide new understanding of the flow and wake characteristics for real riparian vegetation patches based on field‐scale experiments with natural willows, in order to inform hydromorphological and ecological modelling. The focus was placed on the effects of foliage as the main driver of the seasonal changes in vegetation and on the influence of the flexibility‐induced reconfiguration on the flow in the wake and around the patches. The patch drag, defined by its flow blockage factor, was increased by 3.0–4.4 times by the presence of foliage and decreased by up to 60% because of the streamlining and reconfiguration of foliage with increasing flow velocity. Such large changes in the patch drag altered the flow and wake characteristics, affecting the onset of a patch‐scale vortex street. Seasonality and flexibility modified the patch sheltering effect, that is, the magnitude of velocity, turbulent kinetic energy, and bed shear stress reduction in the wake, relative to the background level. In the presence of foliage, mean flow velocity and bed shear stress in the wake were reduced on average by ~50% and ~70%, respectively. The sheltering effect was lower for the leafless conditions than for the foliated conditions. For the foliated cases, the spatial extents of the over‐depth and the near‐bed sheltered region were on average 1.5 and 1.8 times larger than in the corresponding leafless cases, respectively. Overall, seasonal changes in vegetation and flexibility‐induced mechanisms were identified as key controls for the flow associated with patches of riparian vegetation, with major implications on developing models for predicting hydromorphological processes and the potential to preserve and create habitats. Introduction: The Unified Dyskinesia Rating Scale (UDysRS) was developed to provide a comprehensive rating tool of dyskinesia in Parkinson's disease (PD). Because dyskinesia therapy trials involve multicenter studies, having a scale that is validated in multiple non-English languages is pivotal to international efforts to treat dyskinesia. The aim of the present study was to organize and perform an independent validation of the UDysRS Finnish version. Methods: The UDysRS was translated into Finnish and then back-translated into English using 2 independent teams. Cognitive pretesting was conducted on the Finnish version and required modifications to the structure or wording of the translation. The final Finnish version was administered to 250 PD patients whose native language is Finnish. The data were analyzed to assess the confirmatory factor structure to the Spanish UDysRS (the reference standard). Secondary analyses included an exploratory factor analysis (EFA), independent of the reference standard. Results: The comparative fit index (CFI), in comparison with the reference standard factor structure, was 0.963 for Finnish. In the EFA, where variability from sample to sample is expected, isolated item differences of factor structure were found between the Finnish and Reference Standard versions of the UDysRS. These subtle differences may relate to differences in sample composition or variations in disease status. Conclusion: The overall factor structure of the Finnish version was consistent with that of the reference standard, and it can be designated as the official version of the UDysRS for Finnish speaking populations. Abstract Background Status epilepticus (SE) is proposed to lead to an age-dependent acute activation of a repertoire of inflammatory processes, which may contribute to neuronal damage in the hippocampus. The extent and temporal profiles of activation of these processes are well known in the adult brain, but less so in the developing brain. We have now further elucidated to what extent inflammation is activated by SE by investigating the acute expression of several cytokines and subacute glial reactivity in the postnatal rat hippocampus. Methods SE was induced by an intraperitoneal (i.p.) injection of kainic acid (KA) in 9- and 21-day-old (P9 and P21) rats. The mRNA expression of interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β), tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), interleukin-10 (IL-10), matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9), glial-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF), interferon gamma (IFN-γ), and transforming growth factor-beta 1 (TGF-β1) were measured from 4 h up to 3 days after KA injection with real-time quantitative PCR (qPCR). IL-1β protein expression was studied with ELISA, GFAP expression with western blotting, and microglial and astrocyte morphology with immunohistochemistry 3 days after SE. Results SE increased mRNA expression of IL-1β, TNF-α and IL-10 mRNA in hippocampus of both P9 and P21 rats, their induction being more rapid and pronounced in P21 than in P9 rats. MMP-9 expression was augmented similarly in both age groups and GDNF expression augmented only in P21 rats, whereas neither IFN-γ nor TGF-β1 expression was induced in either age group. Microglia and astrocytes exhibited activated morphology in the hippocampus of P21 rats, but not in P9 rats 3 d after SE. Microglial activation was most pronounced in the CA1 region and also detected in the basomedial amygdala. Conclusion Our results suggest that SE provokes an age-specific cytokine expression in the acute phase, and age-specific glial cell activation in the subacute phase as verified now in the postnatal rat hippocampus. In the juvenile hippocampus, transient increases in cytokine mRNA expression after SE, in contrast to prolonged glial reactivity and region-specific microglial activity after SE, suggest that the inflammatory response is changed from a fulminant and general initial phase to a more moderate and specific subacute response.

Natural riparian vegetation generally presents a complex hydrodynamic behavior governed by plant morphology and flexibility. By contrast, hydrodynamic processes in partly vegetated channels are conventionally simulated by using simplified model vegetation, such as arrays of rigid cylinders. The aim of this study is to investigate the impacts of embedding natural plant features in the experimental simulation of flow in partly vegetated channels. Unique comparative experiments were carried out with both reconfiguring vegetation made of natural‐like shrubs and grasses, and with rigid cylinders. While the lateral distributions of flow properties presented a high similarity governed by the shear layer differential velocity ratio, the bulk vegetative drag, and the presence of large‐scale vortices, the flexibility‐induced mechanisms of natural‐like vegetation markedly affected the flow at the interface. Differences in plant morphology and spacing, and the dynamic motion of flexible foliated plants induced deeper vortex penetration into the vegetation. The normalized shear penetration was 6–10 times greater than observed for rigid cylinders, resulting in wider zones significantly exchanging momentum with the adjacent open water. The efficiency of lateral momentum transport for flexible foliated vegetation was up to 40% greater than the corresponding rigid cylinder case. Overall, the results indicated that improving the representativeness of model vegetation is a critical step toward the accurate simulation of hydrodynamic and transport processes in natural settings. Abstract New sustainable, cost-effective solutions are urgently needed for river management since conventional practices have posed serious ecological threats on streams, rivers and the surrounding riparian areas. Besides addressing the societal needs e.g. for flood management, river management should increasingly address the ecosystem requirements for improved water quality and biodiversity. We argue that it is not feasible to solve existing and future river management challenges with intensive restoration projects. Instead, we believe that less resource-intensive solutions using natural channel processes and features, including vegetation, should be investigated. Besides directly supporting biota, aquatic and riparian vegetation traps, takes up and helps to process nutrients and harmful substances, and thus this paper emphasizes vegetation as a tool for nature-based solutions (NBS) in river management. We synthesize findings from key literature, showing that the fate of substances in channel systems is largely controlled by abiotic and biotic processes facilitated and modified by vegetation, including flow hydrodynamics, channel morphology, and sediment transport. Subsequently, we demonstrate how vegetation can be incorporated into channel designs, focusing on a two-stage (compound) design to improve resilience to flooding, control the transport of substances, and enhance the ecological status. As a conclusion, clever use and maintenance of vegetation present an unused potential to obtain large-scale positive environmental impacts in rivers and streams experiencing anthropogenic pressures. Detailed modeling of floodplain flows and associated processes requires data on mixed, heterogeneous vegetation at river reach scale, though the collection of vegetation data is typically limited in resolution or lack spatial information. This study investigates physically-based characterization of mixed floodplain vegetation by means of terrestrial laser scanning (TLS). The work aimed at developing an approach for deriving the characteristic reference areas of herbaceous and foliated woody vegetation, and estimating the vertical distribution of woody vegetation. Detailed experimental data on vegetation properties were gathered both in a floodplain site for herbaceous vegetation, and under laboratory conditions for 2-3 m tall trees. The total plant area (Atot) of woody vegetation correlated linearly with the TLS-based voxel count, whereas the Atot of herbaceous vegetation showed a linear correlation with TLS-based vegetation mean height. For woody vegetation, 1 cm voxel size was found suitable for estimating both the Atot and its vertical distribution. A new concept was proposed for deriving Atot for larger areas from the point cloud attributes of small sub-areas. The results indicated that the relationships between the TLS attributes and Atot of the sub-areas can be derived either by mm resolution TLS or by manual vegetation sampling. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Both the foliage and stem essentially influence the flow resistance of woody plants, but their different biomechanical properties complicate the parameterization of foliated vegetation for modeling. This paper investigates whether modeling of flow resistance caused by natural woody vegetation can be improved using explicit description of both the foliage and stem. For this purpose, we directly measured the drag forces of Alnus glutinosa, Betula pendula, Salix viminalis, and Salix x rubens twigs in a laboratory flume at four foliation levels, parameterized with the leaf-area-to-stem-area ratio AL/ AS. The species differed in the foliage drag but had approximately equal stem drag. For the foliated twigs, increasing AL/ AS was found to increase the reconfiguration and the share of the foliage drag to the total drag. The experiments provided new insight into the factors governing the flow resistance of natural woody vegetation and allowed us to develop a model for estimating the vegetative friction factor using the linear superposition of the foliage and stem drag. The model is novel in that the foliage and stem are separately described with physically based parameters: drag coefficients, reconfiguration parameters, and leaf area and frontal-projected stem area per ground area. The model could satisfactorily predict the flow resistance of twig to sapling-sized specimens of the investigated species at velocities of 0.05-1 m/s. Mobile mapping systems (MMSs) are used for mapping topographic and urban features which are difficult and time consuming to measure with other instruments. The benefits of MMSs include efficient data collection and versatile usability. This paper investigates the data processing steps and quality of a boat-based mobile mapping system (BoMMS) data for generating terrain and vegetation points in a river environment. Our aim in data processing was to filter noise points, detect shorelines as well as points below water surface and conduct ground point classification. Previous studies of BoMMS have investigated elevation accuracies and usability in detection of fluvial erosion and deposition areas. The new findings concerning BoMMS data are that the improved data processing approach allows for identification of multipath reflections and shoreline delineation. We demonstrate the possibility to measure bathymetry data in shallow (0-1 m) and clear water. Furthermore, we evaluate for the first time the accuracy of the BoMMS ground points classification compared to manually classified data. We also demonstrate the spatial variations of the ground point density and assess elevation and vertical accuracies of the BoMMS data. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper summarizes current practices for the estimation of flow resistance caused by floodplain vegetation in emergent flow conditions. The current state-of-the-art for the parameterization of vegetative form drag and associated flow resistance was explored with a view on practical applicability. Specifically, the dissimilar resistance behaviour of simply shaped rigid elements and foliated natural vegetation was emphasized by compiling and reanalysing data published by the authors’ research teams as well as others. It was shown that describing the key hydraulic properties of plants, geometry, and flexibility, with species-specific parameters is superior to the rigid cylinder analogy commonly used in hydraulic engineering practice. The discussion on the limitations of many existing approaches for the determination of vegetative flow resistance is intended to advance the use of modern practices such as the parameterization of vegetation density with the leaf area index, a parameter that can be derived using remote sensing techniques. Sequestration of phosphorus in sediments is critical in controlling the availability of phosphate for algal growth in shallow bays of the Gulf of Finland (Baltic Sea). In the organic rich, low-salinity-water bay studied, the release of phosphorus from the sediments was sensitive to bio irrigation and oxygen conditions in the water. This was explained by the importance of hydrated iron oxides in binding phosphorus at the sediment surface, the sensitivity of iron-bound phosphorus to redox conditions, and the presence of soluble iron and sulphate. Chemical forms of phosphorus, especially phosphorus bound by redox-sensitive hydrated iron oxides, are regulated by the amount of degradable organic matter, availability of oxygen, iron and sulphate as well as bio irrigation by benthic fauna. To improve the short-term prediction of the water quality and particularly the dynamics of algal blooms in the coastal areas of the Gulf of Finland, sediment phosphorus and especially hydrated iron oxides should be included in water quality models. Design of environmentally preferable agricultural drainage channels calls for an improved understanding of cohesive sediment processes. Flow and cohesive sediments were investigated in a new demonstration and test channel where a floodplain was excavated on one side of the existing channel to improve flood conveyance. In this approach, the existing, naturally recovered channel was mostly left intact to reduce environmental impacts. Continuous monitoring of discharge and suspended sediment concentration (SSC) during 1 year revealed that the construction work of the two-stage channel caused 2% of the annual suspended sediment (SS) load. Agricultural areas covering 13% of the catchment were estimated to contribute over half of the annual SS, predominantly during the rising stages. Seasonal positive hysteresis was found in SSC which was explained by different drainage efficiencies of two distinct sediment sources. The temporally varying shares of the two sources caused scatter in the rating curves between discharge and SSC or SS load. Out-of-channel processes were shown to govern the amount and timing of the SS input into the channel, indicating that environmentally preferable agricultural channel design should consider the cohesive sediment processes and sources at the catchment scale. Abstract: In the postnatal rodent hippocampus status epilepticus (SE) leads to age- and region-specific excitotoxic neuronal damage, the precise mechanisms of which are still incompletely known. Recent studies suggest that the activation of inflammatory responses together with glial cell reactivity highly contribute to excitotoxic neuronal damage. However, pharmacological tools to attenuate their activation in the postnatal brain are still poorly elucidated. In this study, we investigated the role of inflammatory mediators in kainic acid (KA)-induced neuronal damage in organotypic hippocampal slice cultures (OHCs). A specific cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) inhibitor N-[2-(cyclohexyloxy)-4-nitrophenyl]-methanesulfonamide (NS-398) was used to study whether or not it could ameliorate neuronal death. Our results show that KA treatment (24 h) resulted in a dose-dependent degeneration of CA3a/b pyramidal neurons. Furthermore, COX-2 immunoreactivity was pronouncedly enhanced particularly in CA3c pyramidal neurons, microglial and astrocyte morphology changed from a resting to active appearance, the expression of the microglial specific protein, Iba1, increased, and prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) production increased. These indicated the activation of inflammatory processes. However, the expression of neither proinflammatory cytokines, i.e. tumour necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) and interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β), nor the anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-10 mRNA was significantly altered by KA treatment as studied by real-time PCR. Despite activation of an array of inflammatory processes, neuronal damage could not be rescued either with the combined pre- and co-treatment with a specific COX-2 inhibitor, NS-398. Our results suggest that KA induces activation of a repertoire of inflammatory processes in immature OHCs, and that the timing of anti-inflammatory treatment to achieve neuroprotection is a challenge due to developmental properties and the complexity of inflammatory processes activated by noxious stimuli. Conventional dredging of ditches and streams to ensure agricultural drainage and flood mitigation can have severe environmental impacts. The aim of this paper is to investigate the potential benefits of an alternative, nature-based two-stage channel (TSC) design with floodplains excavated along the main channel. Through a literature survey, investigations at Finnish field sites and expert interviews, we assessed the performance, costs, and monetary environmental benefits of TSCs in comparison to conventional dredging, as well as the bottlenecks in their financing and governance. We found evidence supporting the expected longer-term functioning of drainage as well as larger plant and fish biodiversity in TSCs compared to conventional dredging. The TSC design likely improves water quality since the floodplains retain suspended sediment and phosphorus and remove nitrogen. In the investigated case, the additional value of phosphorus retention and conservation of protected species through the TSC design was 2.4 times higher than the total costs. We demonstrate how TSCs can be made eligible for the obligatory vegetated riparian buffer of the European Union agri-environmental subsidy scheme (CAP-AES) by optimising their spatial application with respect to other buffer measures, and recommend to publicly finance their additional costs compared to conventional dredging at priority sites. This paper investigates the interplay between the flow, suspended sediment concentration (SSC), and net deposition at the lateral interface between a main channel and riverbank/floodplain vegetation consisting of emergent flexible woody plants with understory grasses. In a new set of flume experiments, data were collected concurrently on the flow field, SSC, and net deposition using acoustic Doppler velocimeters, optical turbidity sensors, and weight-based sampling. Vegetation largely affected the vertical SSC distributions, both within and near the vegetated areas. The seasonal variation of vegetation properties was important, as the foliage strongly increased lateral mixing of suspended sediments between the unvegetated and vegetated parts of the channel. Foliage increased the reach-scale net deposition and enhanced deposition in the understory grasses at the main channel–vegetation interface. To estimate the seasonal differences caused by foliation, we introduced a new drag ratio approach for describing the SSC difference between the vegetated and unvegetated channel parts. Findings in this study suggest that future research and engineering applications will benefit from a more realistic description of natural plant features, including the reconfiguration of plants and drag by the foliage, to complement and replace existing rigid cylinder approaches. This paper investigates the structural properties of four common riparian tree species and their reconfiguration under hydrodynamic loading in a towing tank in foliated and defoliated conditions. 3D tree models were generated by digitizing twenty 0.8–3.3 m tall specimens at branch level. Branch diameters and lengths were measured in order to calculate the one-sided stem area and stem volume over the plant height. The novelty of the investigations originated from the characterization of the reconfiguration which was achieved by combining the contracted width, the deflected height, and the underwater projected area in order to determine the porosity at different velocities. The results showed that the basal diameter could be used to predict the entire total one-sided stem area, although this method was not capable of reproducing the observed non-linear vertical distributions. The flow-induced width contraction contributed significantly to the reduction of the rectangular cross-sectional area occupied by the plant. The porosity of the foliated trees increased at the lower velocities, and then decreased at the higher velocities. Overall, detailed spatial–structural analyses of woody vegetation provided valuable information about plant behaviour under load, and thus are helpful for improving the determination of the physically based parameters of complex vegetative elements which is highly relevant for environmental modelling in order to fill the gap of knowledge concerning the hydrodynamic and aerodynamic flow around trees.
