The trick is to listen carefully, perhaps clarify or reflect and then to ask questions in a manner that arouses thought and consideration rather than anger or defense.

The author shares his insights on nursing the elderly. He has worked with a couple of wonderful charge nurses who showed her the positive effects of remembering the small things: asking about culturally specific needs, remembering relatives' names, warning patients about the pending sting of a needle or alcohol wash, face washes in the morning and hand washes after a pan, mouth rinses, lip balm and the odd smile here and there. Calming a patient through fixing the little things can assist the major components of treatment and ultimately the final health outcome.
