This paper focuses on the mathematical and numerical modeling of the electric arc + laser beam welding (HLAW) process using an innovative model of the Yb:YAG laser heat source. Laser energy distribution is measured experimentally using a UFF100 analyzer. The results of experimental research, including the beam profile and energetic characteristics of an electric arc, are used in the model. The laser beam description is based on geostatistical kriging interpolation, whereas the electric arc is modeled using Goldak's distribution. Hybrid heat source models are used in numerical algorithms to analyze physical phenomena occurring in the laser–arc hybrid welding process. Thermal phenomena with fluid flow in the fusion zone (FZ) are described by continuum conservation equations. The kinetics of phase transformations in the solid state are determined using Johnson–Mehl–Avrami (JMA) and Koistinen–Marburger (KM) equations. A continuous cooling transformation (CCT) diagram is determined using interpolation functions and experimental research. An experimental dilatometric analysis for the chosen cooling rates is performed to define the start and final temperatures as well as the start and final times of phase transformations. Computer simulations of butt-welding of S355 steel are executed to describe temperature and melted material velocity profiles. The predicted FZ and heat-affected zone (HAZ) are compared to cross-sections of hybrid welded joints, performed using different laser beam focusing. The obtained results confirm the significant influence of the power distribution of the heat source and the laser beam focusing point on the temperature distribution and the characteristic zones of the joint. Laser beam cutting technology is becoming increasingly popular in various industries. Advantages of this method is a very high cutting speed and a precision of edges of cut elements. Good quality depends on many technological parameters. Numerical prediction of the effect of cutting process parameters on the quality of the surface can be useful for technologists. The work concerns the numerical analysis of the laser cutting process of sheet made of steel. The influence of selected parameters on the energy efficiency of the heat source and the cutting speed are analyzed. Numerical calculations are performed in Abaqus software. Three-dimensional discrete model of the analyzed system is developed. The standard material parameters of austenitic steel changing with the temperature are taken into account. Gauss model describing the distribution of movable heat source of a laser beam power are assumed in the solution algorithms. The influence of various parameters of the laser beam on obtained temperature field and shape of cut zone is estimated on the basis of numerical calculations. The results are compared with the results of the experiment.

This work concerns numerical modelling and computer simulations of temperature field and phase transformations during Yb:YAG laser heating of sheets made of S355 steel. The distribution of laser power emitted by Trumpf laser head D70 is used in the analysis. The heat source is modelled on the basis of interpolation algorithms using geostatistical kriging method. Coupled heat transfer and fluid flow in the fusion zone are described respectively by transient heat transfer equation with convective term and Navier-Stokes equation. The kinetics of phase transformations and volumetric fractions of arising phases are obtained on the basis of Johnson-Mehl-Avrami (JMA) and Koistinen-Marburger (KM) models. Continuous Heating Transformation (CHT) diagram is used for heating process and Continuous Cooling Transformation (CCT) diagram is used for heated steel with the decomposition of final volume fractions of phases transformed form austenite dependant on cooling rates.

This work concerns mathematical and numerical modelling of temperature field during Yb:YAG laser heating of sheets made of S355 steel with the motion of liquid steel in the fusion zone taken into account. Laser power distribution and the caustics are determined on the basis of the geostatistical kriging method. Temperature field and melted material velocity field in the fusion zone are obtained from the numerical solution of continuum mechanics equations using projection method and finite volume method. Numerical algorithms are implemented into computer solver using ObjectPascal programming language. Computer simulations of Yb:YAG laser heating process are performed for different process parameters. Characteristic zones of experimentally obtained cross sections of heated elements are compared to numerically predicted fusion zone and heat affected zone.

The numerical analysis of laser welding process with consideration analytical methods determining phase transformations and mechanical properties of welded joints are presents in this paper. The analytical CCT diagram and final structural composition of S355 steel are presented. The empirical relations presents in paper are determined by chemical compositions investigated steel and cooling rate between temperatures 800-500°C (t8/5). Phase composition and mechanical properties each of structures of steel in weld and heat affected zone (HAZ) are determined on the basis of analytical methods. Laser welded flat is used in numerical simulations in ABAQUS. Mathematical modes of volumetric welding source are used in the calculations. Temperature fields, shape and size of melting zone for selected points in the cross-section of the joint are determined on the basis of thermal cycles obtained numerical.

The paper concerns numerical analysis of thermal phenomena occurring in the butt welding of two different materials by a laser beam welding. The temperature distribution for the welded butt-joint is obtained on the basis of numerical simulations performed in the ABAQUS program. Numerical analysis takes into account the thermophysical properties of welded plate made of two different materials. Temperature distribution in analysed joints is obtained on the basis of numerical simulation in Abaqus/Standard solver, which allowed the determination of the geometry of laser welded butt-joint.

The paper concerns numerical simulations of progressive hardening include phase transformations in solid state of steel. Abaqus FEA software is used for numerical analysis of temperature field and phase transformations. Numerical subroutines, written in fortran programming language are used in computer simulations where models of the distribution of movable heat source, kinetics of phase transformations in solid state as well as thermal and structural strain are implemented. Model for evaluation of fractions of phases and their kinetics is based on continuous heating diagram and continuous cooling diagram. The numerical analysis of thermal fields, phase fractions and strain associated progressive hardening of elements made of steel were done.

The paper deals with the implementation of the chosen fatigue damage criterions into FE analysis. Our study considers a shell finite element structural analysis in conjunction with the multiaxial rainflow counting and the fatigue damage prediction. The computational analysis considers stochastic response under random excitation in time domain and damage calculation based on so called critical plane approach (CPA).

This paper concerns mathematical modelling of caustics of solid state laser YAG type with the disk active medium. The heat source model is developed on the basis of interpolation algorithms using geostatistical kriging method. The real laser beam power distribution and caustics are taken into account in the model. Measurements of laser beam power distribution and diameter of the laser beam spot for different focusing are performed using UFF100 analyzer. Yb:YAG laser emitted by Trumpf laser head D70 is used in the experiment. Presented results include the comparison of experimentally determined laser power intensity distribution and caustic with results obtained by developed interpolation model.

Laser welding technology is applied to many types of welded joints. The determination of the influence of technological parameters on the properties of resulting joint is a significant problem for technologists. Numerical estimation of the shape of the weld and its deformation is important in the initial stage of construction design. The paper concerns computer analysis of thermal and mechanical phenomena in laser welded lap joint made of austenitic steel. Three dimensional discrete model of analyzed lap joint is created in Abaqus FEA engineering software. Numerical analysis takes into account temperature dependent thermomechanical properties of austenitic steel. The movable heat source power distribution is modelled using Gaussian distribution. Computational model takes into account the gap between the joined plates. Temperature distribution in analysed joints is presented on the basis of performed numerical simulations. The shape and size of the fusion zone as well as deformation of the joint are estimated.

Background. The epidemic of cancer (including oral cancer) is a growing public health and economic problem in the European societies. A high percentage of patients who come for the appropriate treatment are in the late stages of advancement, often with nodal and/or distant metastases. The literature on the public oral cancer awareness in Poland and Germany is limited. Objectives. To investigate the levels of public awareness about the early symptoms and risk factors of oral cancer, and to analyze the findings in the context of the socioeconomic profiles of the subjects. Materials and methods. The survey consisted of a 20-item questionnaire divided into 4 sections: socioeconomic and demographic factors, the awareness of oral cancer, symptoms of oral cancer, and its risk factors. It was distributed to 465 adult patients in Poland (Wrocław and Łódź) and Germany (Dresden). Results. The response rate was 97.6%. Most of the respondents (65.4%) had heard of oral cancer. The sources of information were mainly the traditional mass media and the Internet, with only 23.8% of the respondents indicating doctors as a source of information about oral cancer. What is worrying, only about 1/5 of the participants in each of the 3 centers had an oral cancer examination last year. The awareness of oral cancer correlated positively with the age of the respondents and negatively with the size of the place of residence. Education level had no significant impact on declared knowledge. Conclusions. The results of this survey do not only show unsatisfactory levels of patients' awareness of the risk factors and symptoms of oral cancer but also emphasize the need to improve the level of healthcare concerning this disease, including screening programs. The paper presents a numerical model based on the finite element method (FEM) to predict deformations and residual stresses in socket welding of different diameter stainless steel pipes made of X5CrNi18-10 steel. The next part of the paper concerns the determination of strength properties of a welded joint in terms of a shear test. A thermo-elastic–plastic numerical model is developed using Abaqus FEA software in order to determine the thermal and mechanical phenomena of the welded joint. This approach requires the implementation of moveable heat source power intensity distribution based on circumferentially moving Goldak's heat source model. This model is implemented in the additional DFLUX subroutine, written in Fortran programming language. The correctness of the assumed model of thermal phenomena is confirmed by examinations of the shape and size of the melted zone. The strength of the welded joint subjected to shear is verified by performing a compression test of welded pipes as well as computer simulations with validation of the computational model using the Dantec 3D image correlation system. The welding process of dissimilar materials causes a lot of technological issues related to different properties of materials of joined elements. Thermal conductivity is one of most important factors influencing the deformation of the weld. The change of thermal conductivity in the function of the temperature can produce various strains that cannot be predicted during construction design. Different structures of materials appear during joining of dissimilar materials as well as different characteristic zones of the joint and its mechanical properties. The most important is the proper identification of joint zones and the size of deformation at the production stage of welded construction. This work presents the numerical analysis of physical phenomena in overlap welding of two sheets made of S355 carbon steel and 304 austenitic steel using a laser beam. A three-dimensional discrete model is developed taking into account thermophysical properties changing with temperature. Temperature distribution and the shape of the welding pool is predicted on the basis of performed computer simulations. Maxillary constriction is a common skeletal craniofacial abnormality, and transverse maxillary deficiency affects 30% of patients receiving orthodontic and surgical treatment. The aim of the study was to analyse craniofacial skeletal changes in adults with maxillary constriction after transpalatal distraction. The study group consisted of 36 patients (16 women) aged 17 to 42 years (M = 27.1; SD = 7.8) with a known complete skeletal crossbite and who underwent transpalatal distraction procedure. The measurements were obtained on diagnostic models, and cephalometric PA radiograms were obtained at time points, i.e., before treatment (T1) and after the completion of active distraction (T2). The analysis of diagnostic models involving the arch width measurement at different levels demonstrated a significant increase in L1, L2, L3, L4, L5, and L6 dimensions after transpalatal distraction. The largest width increase (9.5 mm) was observed for the L3 dimension (the intercanine distance). The analysis of frontal cephalograms displayed a significant increase in W1, W2, and W3 dimensions after transpalatal distraction. The largest width increase (4.9 mm) was observed for the W1 dimension at the level of the alveolar process of the maxilla. Transpalatal distraction is an effective treatment for transverse maxillary deficiency after the end of bone growth. The expansion observed on diagnostic models is close to a parallel segment shift mechanism, with a mild tendency towards a larger opening anteriorly. The maxillary segment rotation pattern analysed based on the frontal cephalograms is close to a hand fan unfolding with the rotation point at the frontonasal suture. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a noninvasive, highly selective method for the treatment of diseases characterized by uncontrolled cell proliferation. It was clinically approved more than 30 years ago. PDT involves the selective uptake of a photosensitizer (PS) by neoplastic tissue, which is able to produce reactive oxygen species (ROS) upon irradiation with visible or near- -infrared (NIR) light. ROS induce destruction of target cells and damage of tumor-associated vasculature and activate an antitumor immune response, leading to tumor regression. We model the split red clump of the Galactic bulge in OGLE-III photometry, and compare the results to predictions from two N-body models. Our analysis yields precise maps of the brightness of the two red clumps, the fraction of stars in the more distant peak, and their combined surface density. We compare the observations to predictions from two N-body models previously used in the literature. Both models correctly predict several features as long as one assumes an angle αBar ≈30° between the Galactic bar's major axis and the line of sight to the Galactic Centre. In particular that the fraction of stars in the faint red clump should decrease with increasing longitude. The biggest discrepancies between models and data are in the rate of decline of the combined surface density of red clump stars towards negative longitudes and of the brightness difference between the two red clumps towards positive longitudes, with neither discrepancy exceeding ~25 per cent in amplitude. Our analysis of the red giant luminosity function also yields an estimate of the red giant branch bump parameters towards these high-latitude fields, and evidence for a high rate (~25 per cent) of disc contamination in the bulge at the colour and magnitude of the red clump, with the disc contamination rate increasing towards sightlines further distant from the plane. The paper concerns the numerical analysis of the influence for three different of welding heat source inclinations on the weld pool shape and mechanical properties of the resulting joint. Numerical analysis is based on the experimental tests of single-side welding of two sheets made of X5CrNi18-10 stainless steel. The joint is made using a laser welding heat source. Experimental test was performed for one heating source inclination. As a part of the work metallographic tests are performed on which the quality of obtained joints are determined. Numerical calculations are executed in Abaqus FEA. The same geometrical model is assumed as in the experiment. Material model takes into account changing with temperature thermophysical properties of austenitic steel. Modeling of the motion of heating source is performed in additional subroutine. The welding source parameters are assumed in accordance with the welding process parameters. Numerical calculations were performed for three different inclinations of the source. One inclination is consistent with experimental studies. The performed numerical calculations allowed to determine the temperature field, shape of welding pool as well as deformations and stress state in welded joint. Demodicidosis is the skin disease which can affect both humans and animals. It is caused by Demodex mites. Demodectic infestation as a single skin tumor is rare and it is likely to be misdiagnosed as a malignant neoplastic disease of the skin. The authors present a case of a 54-year-old patient admitted to the Head And Neck Neoplasms Surgery Department of Medical University in Lodz due to skin ulceration localized on the left frontal part of the hairless skin of the face. Basal cell carcinoma was suspected. Demodex mites were found in the histopatological examination. Demodicidosis should be considered in clinical differentiation of diseases manifesting as multiple or single skin symptoms. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Tuberculosis is an infectious disease caused by strains of Mycobacterium. World Health Organisation estimates annual incidence of tuberculosis for 8.8 milion of new cases. As much as 7988 new cases of pulmonary tuberculosis were recorded in Poland in 2007. Extrapulmonary tuberculosis was detected in 628 patients. This article reports a rare case of mediastinal and cervical abscess in the course of the isolated tuberculosis of the lymph nodes treated in the ENT Department of Mazowiecki Specialists Hospital in Siedlce.
