Background This study examined the moderating role of outdoor time on the relationship between overweight and myopia. Methods The data for this study was obtained from a prospective study in Shanghai, where non-myopic children wore wristwear and were followed up for 1 year. Eye examinations were performed at each visit. The modification effect was assessed on the additive scale using multivariable logistic regression, and relative excess risk due to interaction was used to calculate the modification effect. Results A total of 4683 non-myopic children were included with 32.20% being overweight at baseline. Following a 1-year period, 17.42% of children had myopia. When compared to those who spent <90 minutes outdoors, children who spent >120 had a relative risk of myopia onset that was reduced to 0.61. As time spent outdoors decreased, more risks of myopia onset were identified among overweight children than among normal children, the modification effect on the additive scale was −0.007, with ~70% of this effect attributed to the modifying influence of outdoor time. Conclusions Increasing outdoor time can reduce myopia more among overweight children than normal. College freshmen are special populations facing great challenges in adapting to the brand new environment, and their lifestyle and emotional states are worthy of attention. Especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, their screen time and prevalence of negative emotions were significantly increased, but few studies have focused on such situation of college freshmen and illustrated relevant mechanisms. Thus, based on a sample of Chinese college freshmen during the COVID-19 pandemic, the current study aimed to investigate the association between their screen time and negative emotions (depression, anxiety and stress), and further explore the mediating effects of sleep quality. Data from 2,014 college freshmen was analyzed. The screen time was self-reported by participants using predesigned questionnaires. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and Chinese Version of Depression Anxiety and Stress Scale-21 (DASS-21) were used to assess sleep quality and emotional states, respectively. The mediation analysis was conducted to examine the meditation effect. Results indicated that participants with negative emotions tended to have longer daily screen time and worse sleep quality, sleep quality partially mediated the association between screen time and negative emotions.The critical role of sleep quality and related intervention measures should be recognized and implemented. Purpose: This study is to quantitatively estimate the health-related quality of life (HRQOL) impact of major age-related eye diseases (AREDs) including cataract, glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration (AMD), and diabetic retinopathy (DR) assessed by the EuroQoL Five-Dimensional Questionnaire (EQ-5D). Methods: PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, and CINAHL were searched until October 20, 2022. Studies were included if they reported the EQ-5D health utility score (HUS) or visual analogue scale (VAS) score of both AREDs patients and healthy controls. The mean difference (MD) in HUS or VAS score between cases and controls and its 95% confidence interval (95%CI) were pooled using the random-effects model. We also performed sensitivity analysis using the leaving-one-out method and subgroup analyses by sample size and race. The prevalence in reporting any problems in the five EQ-5D dimensions was summarized and compared between cases and controls using the Chi-square test. Results: Fifteen articles involving 30,491 participants were included in this review. Pooled estimates indicated reduced HUS in AMD patients (MD = – 0.04, 95%CI – 0.07, – 0.01; P = 0.009), DR patients (MD = – 0.03, 95%CI – 0.05, – 0.01; P = 0.01), and glaucoma patients (MD = – 0.06, 95%CI – 0.10, – 0.01; P = 0.01), compared with the controls. Significantly lower EQ-5D VAS score was also observed in cataract patients (MD = – 11.33, 95%CI – 13.47, – 9.18; P < 0.001) and DR patients (MD = – 6.41, 95%CI – 10.64, – 2.18; P = 0.003). AREDs patients reported usual activities and anxiety/depression problems more frequently than the control group. Conclusions: Our findings confirmed the HRQOL impairment caused by major AREDs including AMD, cataract, DR, and glaucoma. Research indicates that sleep problem is a behavioral risk factor of obesity. However, few research have applied a multi-dimensional approach to investigate the relationship between sleep health and adiposity. Therefore, the current study aimed to examine the associations of sleep characteristics (duration, quality) and chronotype with overweight/obesity as measured by body mass index. Data were obtained from 2014 college students from the Dali University in the Yunnan province of China in the year 2021. Sleep characteristics and chronotype were measured using self-reported questionnaires. The presence of overweight/obesity was assessed by anthropometric measurements. Multiple logistic regression models and restricted cubic spline hazard models were established to examine associations between sleep characteristics, chronotype and adiposity. After adjusting for demographic characteristics and other obesity-related behavioral risk factors, evening type was positively associated with overweight/obesity, and an L-shaped dose-effect relationship was observed between chronotype scores and the presence of overweight/obesity. However, sleep duration and quality were not associated with the presence of overweight/obesity in the logistic regression models and restrictive cubic splines models. This study indicated that Chinese college students who had the evening chronotype were more likely to be affected by overweight/obesity. Myopic retinopathy is an important cause of irreversible vision loss and blindness. As metabolomics has recently been successfully applied in myopia research, this study sought to characterize the serum metabolic profile of myopic retinopathy in children and adolescents (4–18 years) and to develop a diagnostic model that combines clinical and metabolic features. We selected clinical and serum metabolic data from children and adolescents at different time points as the training set (n = 516) and the validation set (n = 60). All participants underwent an ophthalmologic examination. Untargeted metabolomics analysis of serum was performed. Three machine learning (ML) models were trained by combining metabolic features and conventional clinical factors that were screened for significance in discrimination. The better-performing model was validated in an independent point-in-time cohort and risk nomograms were developed. Retinopathy was present in 34.2% of participants (n = 185) in the training set, including 109 (28.61%) with mild to moderate myopia. A total of 27 metabolites showed significant variation between groups. After combining Lasso and random forest (RF), 12 modelled metabolites (mainly those involved in energy metabolism) were screened. Both the logistic regression and extreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) algorithms showed good discriminatory ability. In the time-validation cohort, logistic regression (AUC 0.842, 95% CI 0.724–0.96) and XGBoost (AUC 0.897, 95% CI 0.807–0.986) also showed good prediction accuracy and had well-fitted calibration curves. Three clinical characteristic coefficients remained significant in the multivariate joint model (p < 0.05), as did 8/12 metabolic characteristic coefficients. Myopic retinopathy may have abnormal energy metabolism. Machine learning models based on metabolic profiles and clinical data demonstrate good predictive performance and facilitate the development of individual interventions for myopia in children and adolescents. The retinal vessel caliber (RVC) is an important biomarker of cardiovascular diseases, which can be semi-automatically measured by fundus photography. This review investigated the associations between the RVCs and the life styles of early life, such as physical activity (PA), sedentary behavior (SB), dietary and sleep, by summarizing the findings from studies on children and adolescents. Two databases (Medline and Embase) were searched from their inception to 30 June 2022. The selected studies were literatures on observational designs, fundus photographs, retinal vessels and lifestyles of children or adolescents. Correlation coefficients of unhealthy life styles and RVCs were transformed to Fisher's z-scores, and the random-effects model was applied to pool data. A total of 18 observational studies were selected; the lifestyles accessed include 9 studies for PA and SB, 8 studies for dietary and 1 study for sleep. The meta-analysis on the correlation coefficients of regression models found the high level of SB (qualified by screen time, ST) was associated the narrower central retinal arteriolar equivalent (CRAE) among children (r = −0.043, 95% confidence intervals [CI] −0.078 to −0.009). By comparing the first and fourth quartiles of PA, the meta-analysis showed that more indoor PA was associated with smaller venular calibers and more outdoor PA was associated with wider CRAE (r = 0.88, 95%CI −3.33 to 0). Unhealthy lifestyles might be harmful on the retinal microcirculation among children and adolescents but their health effect seems not to be as significant as those in adults. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Presenting a chain mediation model to investigate whether mobile phone dependence results in a reduction in health-related quality of life (HRQoL) among Chinese college students, through the mediating effect of chronotype and sleep quality.A cross-sectional survey was conducted on students from a Chinese university using a validated structured questionnaire.2014 freshmen.The study measured the students’ level of mobile phone dependence using the Self-rating Questionnaire for Adolescent Problematic Mobile Phone Use. Chronotype and sleep quality were measured by the Chinese version of the Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire (MEQ) and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), respectively. HRQoL was evaluated using the five-level EuroQol five-dimensional questionnaire (EQ-5D-5L), including a descriptive system and a visual analog scale (VAS).Descriptive statistical analysis, correlation analysis, and mediation analysis.Mobile phone dependence had a significant negative effect on HRQoL as indicated by both the EQ-5D-5L index score and EQ-VAS score (P < .001 for both). Additionally, it was found to significantly predict chronotype (MEQ score) (β = −.546, P < .001) and sleep quality (PSQI score) (β = .163, P < .001). Chronotype negatively predict sleep quality (β = −.058, P < .001), and sleep quality was a significant negative predictor of HRQoL (EQ-5D-5L index score, β = −.008, P < .001; EQ-VAS score, β = −1.576, P < .001).Mobile phone dependence negatively impacts students’ HRQoL through chronotype and sleep quality, and there is a chain mediating effect. Objectives: The aim of this study was to examine the association between health literacy (HL) and sleep problems with mental health of Chinese students in combined junior and senior high school. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among seven hundred and seventy-five students from a combined junior and senior high school in Shenyang on December 16, 2016. HL, sleep problems, anxiety symptoms and depressive symptoms were measured by self-reported validated instruments. Multiple logistic regression models were used to examine the association of HL and sleep problems with mental health problems. Results: The prevalence of anxiety symptoms and depressive symptoms was 24.6% and 45.2%, respectively. Low HL was significantly associated with anxiety symptoms (OR = 2.457, 95%CI: 1.493–4.045) and depressive symptoms (OR = 5.164, 95%CI: 3.233–8.250). Sleep problems were significantly positively correlated with anxiety symptoms (OR = 4.237, 95%CI: 2.831–6.341) and depressive symptoms (OR = 3.170, 95%CI: 2.084–4.823). The students who had sleep problems with low HL had the highest risks of anxiety symptoms (OR = 11.440, 95%CI: 5.564–23.520) and depressive symptoms (OR = 19.470, 95%CI: 8.143–46.558). Conclusion: Our findings suggest that Chinese students in combined junior and senior high school who had sleep problems with low HL are at risk of exhibiting anxiety symptoms and depressive symptoms. Background: College freshmen tend to have more psychological and behavioral problems compared with other populations, especially depressive symptoms. Perceived parental control has been proved to play a significant role in mental health among children and adolescents. Based on the theoretical and empirical research of chronotype and sleep quality, this study constructed a chain mediating model to examine whether they mediated the relationship between parental control and depressive symptoms among Chinese college freshmen.Methods: A total of 2014 college freshmen from Dali University were recruited to participate in this study and completed self-report Parental Bonding Instrument (PBI), Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire (MEQ), Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and Self-Rating Depression Scale (SDS). PROCESS 3.5 for SPSS was applied to determine the chain mediating effect of chronotype and sleep quality between parental control and depressive symptoms.Results: College freshmen with depressive symptoms have higher levels of parental control and worse subjective sleep quality than normal population (all p < 0.001). All study variables are correlated with each other, while chronotype has no significant association with depressive symptoms (r = -0.03, p > 0.05). Both maternal and paternal control have a direct link with depressive symptoms (β = 0.86, p < 0.001; β = 0.88, p < 0.001). Parental control could affect depressive symptoms via the independent mediating effect of sleep quality and the chain mediating effect of chronotype and sleep quality. The total indirect effects of maternal and paternal control on depressive symptoms are 0.93 and 0.94, respectively.Conclusions: Chronotype and sleep quality could mediate the association between parental control and depressive symptoms.
