Several guidelines do not recommend beta-blocker as the first-line treatment for hypertension because of its inferior efficacy in stroke prevention. Combination therapy with beta-blocker is commonly used for blood pressure control. We compared the clinical outcomes in patients treated with amlodipine plus bisoprolol (A + B), a ß1-selective beta-blocker and amlodipine plus valsartan (A + V). A population-based cohort study was performed using data from the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database. From 2012 to 2019, newly diagnosed adult hypertensive patients who received initial amlodipine monotherapy and then switched to A + V or A + B were included. The efficacy outcomes included all-cause death, atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) event (cardiovascular death, myocardial infarction, ischemic stroke, and coronary revascularization), hemorrhagic stroke, and heart failure. Multivariable Cox proportional hazards model was used to evaluate the relationship between outcomes and different treatments. Overall, 4311 patients in A + B group and 10980 patients in A + V group were included. After a mean follow-up of 4.34 ± 1.79 years, the efficacy outcomes were similar between the A + V and A + B groups regarding all-cause death (adjusted hazard ratio [aHR] 0.99, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.83–1.18), ASCVD event (aHR 0.97, 95% CI 0.84–1.12), and heart failure (aHR 1.06, 95% CI 0.87–1.30). The risk of hemorrhagic stroke was lower in A + B group (aHR 0.70, 95% CI 0.52–0.94). The result was similar when taking death into consideration in competing risk analysis. The safety outcomes were similar between the 2 groups. There was no difference of all-cause death, ASCVD event, and heart failure in A + B vs. A + V users. The Matsu Islands Tern Refuge comprises eight reefs located at a relay station on the East Asian bird migration route, and it attracts many transiting, wintering, or breeding birds to inhabit and live on the reefs every year. In order to understand the compositions of plant communities as a breeding habitat for seabirds, we investigated the plant communities of the eight reefs. A total of 130 plots of 10 × 10 square meters were established, from which we found 107 species of plants in 102 genera and 51 families. Among this, we found one critically endangered (CR) species, four vulnerable (VU) species, and three near-threatened (NT) species. The result of two-way indicator species analysis (TWINSPAN) and indicator value (IndVal) showed 130 samples were divided into 11 vegetation types; most of the vegetation types had significant indicator species. We also use the two-way to present the plot of detrended correspondence analysis (DCA) by vegetation types and reefs. Moreover, this result reveals that these samples were more clearly cluster divided by islands. Our results reveal that the compositions and characteristics of plant communities were related clearly to the environmental factors for each reef in the Matsu Islands Tern Refuge. Canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) indicated that species composition of vegetation yielded high correlation with soil property, especially with soil pH. In addition, we found that the traces of bird activity is relevant to the characteristics and structures of plant communities. We found that the plant communities comprising low-grass shrubs would provide relatively soft nesting materials and sheltering effects for eggs or hatchlings for terns. Compared to low-grass shrubs, the traits of high-grass shrubs would not be beneficial to nest for breeding of terns on the ground, and no nested trace was found in these plant communities. In this study, we utilized a mixture random effects model and pairwise comparisons to conduct our analysis. Furthermore, we employed visualization techniques, specifically line plots in Python, to illustrate the tonal variations in disyllabic words among Polish learners of Mandarin. Our findings indicate that Polish learners experience more difficulty with the tonal contours of Tone 1 (T1) and Tone 2 (T2) compared to Taiwanese Mandarin (TM) natives, particularly due to the lower pitch range required. We provide potential pedagogical recommendations based on these results. We suggest that integrating training on T1 and T2 accompanied with Tone 3 (T3) and Tone 4 (T4), because of their lower endpoint tones, may offer a more effective learning strategy for these learners. Previous studies showed that NaIO3 can induce oxidative stress-mediated retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) damage to simulate age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Lemon peel is rich in antioxidants and components that can penetrate the blood–retinal barrier, but their role in retinal oxidative damage remains unexplored. Here, we explore the protection of lemon peel ultrasonic-assisted water extract (LUWE), containing large amounts of flavonoids and polyphenols, against NaIO3-induced retinal degeneration. We initially demonstrated that LUWE, orally administered, prevented retinal distortion and thinning on the inner and outer nuclei layers, downregulating cleaved caspase-3 protein expression in RPE cells in NaIO3-induced mice. The effect of LUWE was achieved through the suppression of apoptosis and the associated proteins, such as cleaved PARP and cleaved caspase-3, as suggested by NaIO3-induced ARPE-19 cell models. This is because LUWE reduced reactive oxygen species-mediated mitochondrial fission via regulating p-Drp-1 and Fis1 expression. We further confirmed that LUWE suppresses the expression of p-MEK-1/2 and p-ERK-1/2 in NaIO3-induced ARPE-19 cells, thereby providing the protection described above, which was confirmed using PD98059 and U0126. These results indicated that LUWE prevents mitochondrial oxidative stress-mediated RPE damage via the MEK/ERK pathway. Lead (Pb) is nonbiodegradable and toxic to the lungs. To investigate the potential mechanisms of Pb‐induced reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation and cell death in the lungs, human non‐small lung carcinoma H460 cells were stimulated with Pb(NO3)2 in this study. The results showed that Pb(NO3)2 stimulation increased cell death by inducing cell apoptosis which showed a reduced Bcl‐2 expression and an enhanced caspase 3 activation. Pb(NO3)2 also caused the production of H2O2 in H460 cells that triggering the buildup of ROS and mitochondrial membrane potential loss. We found that Pb(NO3)2 modulates oxidoreductive activity through reduced the glutathione‐disulfide reductase and glutathione levels in Pb(NO3)2‐exposed H460 cells. Furthermore, the superoxide dismutase (SOD) upstream molecule sirtuin 3 (SIRT3) was increased with Pb(NO3)2 dose. Collectively, these results demonstrate that Pb(NO3)2 promotes lung cell death through SIRT3/SOD‐mediated ROS accumulation and mitochondrial dysfunction. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study considers the performance of tone pronunciation and morpheme intelligibility by L2 Polish Mandarin learners. A mixed-effects ordinal regression model and Tukey's HSD multiple test were used to examine the start-point, end-point, of syllables as a means of assessing their intelligibility by L2 Polish learners regarding the tones with the sequence T0, T1, T2, T4 > T3.and T0, T1> T2, T4 > T3, respectively. Students' tone pronunciation at different stages of learning was compared, i.e. first at less than A1 level of proficiency and then after achieving an A2 level of proficiency according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), with the interval of a 22-week intensive Chinese class. The results suggest that in the case of the steady pitch produced for T0 and T1, L2 Polish learners found it easy to control the vibration speed of the vocal folds over two stages. Additionally, progress in successfully producing T4 was exhibited with improving control over the individual tonal register span, implying that competent tonal production develops with time. It remains unclear whether the reason why the low-range T3 is acquired last is down to the habitually high pitched range of spoken Polish, or a more universally observable phenomenon where T3 is liable to be confused with other tones in production. The cost-effectiveness and high efficiency of atmospheric cold plasma (ACP) incentivise researchers to explore its potentials within the food industry. Presently, the destructive nature of this nonthermal technology can be utilised to inactivate foodborne pathogens, enzymatic ripening, food allergens, and pesticides. However, by adjusting its parameters, ACP can also be employed in other novel applications including food modification, drying pre-treatment, nutrient extraction, active packaging, and food waste processing. Relevant studies were conducted to investigate the impacts of ACP and posit that reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (RONS) play the principal roles in achieving the set objectives. In this review article, operations of ACP to achieve desired results are discussed. Ganoderma formosanum is a medicinal mushroom endemic to Taiwan. The extraction of G. formosanum mycelium using ethyl acetate showed a significant reduction of melanin activity due to the inhibition of tyrosinase. To optimize the production of G. formosanum mycelium with anti-melanogenic activity, different variables (carbon sources and concentrations, initial pH value, and temperature) were investigated. According to the results, the optimal conditions included the utilization of 50 g/L lactose as the carbon source at pH 7 and 25 °C for 9 days. Afterward, the G. formosanum ethanolic extracts-optimized (GFE-O) was used to study the anti-melanogenic activity in vitro and in vivo. In B16-F10 melanoma cells treated with GFE-O (0.1 mg/mL), the intracellular melanin content was reduced to 76% compared to the control group. By applying GFE-O (0.05 mg/mL) in vivo on zebrafish embryo, hypopigmentation was observed, and the melanin content was reduced to 62% compared to the control with no toxicological effects. The results showed that the optimal inoculation conditions can provide the basis for future large-scale production of G. formosanum mycelium to maximize the extraction of anti-melanogenic ingredients. Despite many non‐Saccharomyces yeasts being considered spoilage microorganisms, they can increase aroma and flavor diversity in alcoholic beverages. The purpose of this study was to investigate nontraditional inoculation strategies using aroma‐producing yeast strains for Kyoho wine fermentation, followed by an instrumental analysis and sensory evaluation. The winemaking process was carried out using Saccharomyces cerevisiae Gr112, Hanseniaspora uvarum Pi235, and Pichia kluyveri Pe114. Multiple inoculation strategies were explored. In instrumental analysis results, mixed culture could promote the formation of esters (5.9‐folds) and glycerol (1.3‐folds) and reduce the content of ethanol (–0.5% [v/v]) in wine. The sensory analysis results suggested that the three yeast strains sequential inoculation treatment was associated with the aroma attributes "floral," "red fruity," and "tropical fruity." Co‐cultivation contributed to an increase in complexity and aromatic intensity, with the three‐strain inoculation treatment presenting a more distinctive appearance. Practical Application: The inoculation of S. cerevisiae improved the accumulation of volatile acids and esters by inhibiting the growth of non‐Saccharomyces yeast strains. Inoculation of H. uvarum and P. kluyveri would effectively solve the defect of excessive content of higher alcohols in wines produced by S. cerevisiae. The suitable inoculation strategy between non‐Saccharomyces yeasts could improve the overall quality of Kyoho wine whose starter might be widely used in fermentation industry. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Myocardial ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury is marked by rapid increase in inflammation and not only results in myocardial apoptosis but also compromises the myocardial function. Dunaliella salina (D. salina), a halophilic unicellular microalga, has been used as a provitamin A carotenoid supplement and color additive. Several studies have reported that D. salina extract could attenuate lipopolysaccharides-induced inflammatory effects and regulate the virus-induced inflammatory response in macrophages. However, the effects of D. salina on myocardial I/R injury remain unknown. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the cardioprotection of D. salina extract in rats subjected to myocardial I/R injury that was induced by occlusion of the left anterior descending coronary artery for 1 h followed by 3 h of reperfusion. Compared with the vehicle group, the myocardial infarct size significantly decreased in rats that were pre-treated with D. salina. D. salina significantly attenuated the expressions of TLR4, COX-2 and the activity of STAT1, JAK2, IκB, NF-κB. Furthermore, D. salina significantly inhibited the activation of caspase-3 and the levels of Beclin-1, p62, LC3-I/II. This study is the first to report that the cardioprotective effects of D. salina may mediate anti-inflammatory and anti-apoptotic activities and decrease autophagy through the TLR4-mediated signaling pathway to antagonize myocardial I/R injury. Axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA) is a chronic inflammatory rheumatic disease that mainly affects the axial bones, and dementia is characterized by a decline in cognitive function, leading to dependence in everyday activity. Although the association between dementia and ankylosing spondylitis has been investigated, the influence of axSpA medication on dementia risk is unclear. The aim of this study was to investigate the risk of dementia among axSpA patients and if the conventional synthetic disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (csDMARDs) can reduce the risk of dementia. Patients with axSpA whose data were recorded during 2004–2008 and who were followed up until the end of 2010 were recruited. A control cohort was matched by age and sex. A Cox multivariate proportional hazards model was applied to analyze the risk factors for dementia. The hazard ratio (HR) and adjusted HR (aHR) were estimated between the study and control cohorts. The effects of csDMARDs and steroid use on the risk of different types of dementia were also analyzed. In total, 2341 and 11,705 patients constituted the axSpA and control cohort, respectively. The axSpA cohort had a greater risk of vascular dementia (aHR = 2.09 (1.36–3.20). The risk of dementia (aHR = 1.01 (0.55–1.85) did not significantly differ between patients with axSpA who received csDMARDs. To explore the involved mechanisms and possible treatments of ambient PM2.5 exposure-induced lung inflammation, this work studied the activity of luteolin, a natural flavonoid which widely presents in many plant species, in murine alveolar macrophage MH S cells exposed to PM2.5. Results showed PM2.5 induced an inflammatory response, as evidenced by significantly increased TNF-α, IL-6, MCP-1 and Rantes levels. and induced iNOS, COX-2, and NF-κB protein expressions in MH-S cells. Moreover, luteolin pre-treatment reduced JAK2 and STAT1 but not STAT3 protein expressions in PM2.5-stimulated MH-S cells. Performing JAK2 inhibitor AG490 further showed reduced TNF-α and IL-6 productions as well as iNOS, COX-2, and NF-κB protein expressions. In addition, although PM2.5 exposure could elevate HO-1 expression basically, luteolin pre-treatment and AG490 administration further significantly enhanced HO-1 expression additionally. Collectively, these results revealed that luteolin inhibits inflammation through suppressing JAK2/STAT1/NF-κB pathway and enhancing HO-1 expression in PM2.5-challenged alveolar macrophage MH-S cells. Siraitia grosvenorii is a type of fruit used in traditional Chinese medicine. Previous studies have shown that the conversion of saponins was often carried out by chemical hydrolysis, which can be problematic because of the environmental hazards it may cause and the low yield it produces. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to establish a continuous bioreactor with immobilized enzymes to produce siamenoside I and mogroside IV. The results show that the immobilization process of β-glucosidase exhibited the best relative activity with a glutaraldehyde (GA) concentration of 1.5%, carrier activation time of 1 h and binding enzyme time of 12 h. After the immobilization through GA linkage, the highest relative activity of β-glucosidase was recorded through the reaction with the substrate at 60 °C and pH 5. Subsequently, the glass microspheres with immobilized β-glucosidase were filled into the reactor to maintain the optimal active environment, and the aqueous solution of Siraitia grosvenorii extract was introduced by controlling the flow rate. The highest concentration of siamenoside I and mogroside IV were obtained at a flow rate of 0.3 and 0.2 mL/min, respectively. By developing this immobilized enzyme system, siamenoside I and mogroside IV can be prepared in large quantities for industrial applications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
