Abstract

In a bubble chamber experiment with BEBC the spin alignment parameter η= 1 2 (2ϱ 00 − ϱ 11 − ϱ −1−1 ) is measured for ϱ0 mesons produced in deep inelastic charged-current antineutrino and neutrono interactions on neon. In the current fragmentation region η is found to be η v =0.48±0.27 ( stat. )±0.15 ( syst. ) for v Ne and ηv=0.12±0.20 (stat.)±0.10 (syst.) for vNe interactions

Abstract

The production of the neutral strange particlesK 0, Λ and $$\bar \Lambda $$ invp and $$\bar vp$$ charged current interactions is studied in an experiment with the Big European Bubble Chamber. Mean multiplicities are measured as a function of the event variablesE v,W 2 andQ 2 and of the hadron variablesx F,z andp T 2 .K *± (892) and∑ *± (1385) signals are observed, whereas there is no evidence for∑ *- (1385) production invp scattering. Forward, backward and total mean multiplicities are found to compare well with the predictions of an empirical model for deep-inelastic reactions in the case of the strange mesonsK 0 andK *± (892) but less so for the strange baryons Λ, $$\bar \Lambda $$ and∑ *± (1385). The strange baryon multiplicities are used to obtain the decuplet to octet baryon production ratio and to assess the probabilities of auu orud system to break up.

Abstract

Using data onvp and $$\bar vp$$ charged current interactions from a bubble chamber experiment with BEBC at CERN, the multiplicity distributions of charged hadrons are investigated. The analysis is based on ∼20000 events with incidentv and ∼10000 events with incident $$\bar v$$ . The invariant massW of the total hadronic system ranges from 3 GeV to ∼14 GeV. The experimental multiplicity distributions are fitted by the binomial function (for different intervals ofW and in different intervals of the rapidityy), by the Levy function and the lognormal function. All three parametrizations give acceptable values forX 2. For fixedW, forward and backward multiplicities are found to be uncorrelated. The normalized moments of the charged multiplicity distributions are measured as a function ofW. They show a violation of KNO scaling.

Abstract

The coherent production of 3π systems by charged current antineutrino interactions on neon nuclei is studied in the bubble chamber BEBC exposed to the CERN SPS wide band beam. The coherent signal is attributed mainly to (ρπ) production, where the (ρπ) system is either non-resonant or comes from the decay of a1 mesons. The kinematical variables and the total cross section are compared with the predictions of the meson dominance model. © 1991 Springer-Verlag.

Abstract

Using data obtained with the bubble chamber BEBC at CERN, the inclusivef2 (1270) meson production invp and\(\bar vp\) charged current reactions is studied. It is found thatf2 production occurs mainly in events with a hadronic invariant massW≳7 GeV. In these events, the averagef2 multiplicity is about half the average ρO multiplicity, and thexF andpT2 distributions of thef2 agree in shape with those of the ρO. The predictions of a semi-empirical model (Wells model) are in accord with the measured multiplicities atW>7 GeV, whereas at lowerW the model predicts too largef2 multiplicities.

The analysis is based on ∼20000 events with incidentv and ∼10000 events with incident\(\bar v\). In addition to the known dependence of the average multiplicity onW2 a weak dependence onQ2 for fixed intervals ofW is observed. ForW>2 GeV andQ2>0.1 GeV2 the average multiplicity of charged hadrons is well described by〈n〉=a1+a2ln(W2/GeV2)+a3ln(Q2/GeV2) witha1=0.465±0.053,a2=1.211±0.021,a3=0.103±0.014 for thevp anda1=−0.372±0.073,a2=1.245±0.028,a3=0.093±0.015 for the\(\bar vp\) reaction.

Abstract

Holography has been used successfully in combination with conventional optics for the first time in a large cryogenic bubble chamber, the 15-Foot Bubble Chamber at Fermilab, during a physics run. The innovative system combined the reference beam with the object beam, illuminating a conical volume of $\sim 1.4$~m$^3$. Bubble tracks from neutrino interactions with a width of $\sim 120\;\mu$m have been recorded with good contrast. The ratio of intensities of the object light to the reference light striking the film is called the Beam Branching Ratio. We obtained in our experiment an exceedingly small minimum-observable ratio of $(0.54 \pm 0.21) \times 10^{-7}$. The technology has the potential for a wide range of applications.

Abstract

The production of the neutral strange particlesK0, Λ and\(\bar \Lambda \) invp and\(\bar vp\) charged current interactions is studied in an experiment with the Big European Bubble Chamber. Mean multiplicities are measured as a function of the event variablesEv,W2 andQ2 and of the hadron variablesxF,z andp T 2 .K*± (892) and∑*± (1385) signals are observed, whereas there is no evidence for∑*- (1385) production invp scattering. Forward, backward and total mean multiplicities are found to compare well with the predictions of an empirical model for deep-inelastic reactions in the case of the strange mesonsK0 andK*± (892) but less so for the strange baryons Λ,\(\bar \Lambda \) and∑*± (1385). The strange baryon multiplicities are used to obtain the decuplet to octet baryon production ratio and to assess the probabilities of auu orud system to break up.

Abstract

The coherent production of [pi] and [rho] mesons in [nu][sub [mu]]([bar [nu]][sub [mu]])--neon charged-current interactions has been studied using the Fermilab 15-foot bubble chamber filled with a heavy Ne-H[sub 2] mix and exposed to the Teva- tron quadrupole triplet (anti)neutrino beam. The [nu][sub [mu]] ([bar [nu]][sub [mu]]) beam had an average energy of 80 GeV (70 GeV). From a sample corresponding to approximately 28 000 charged-current interactions, net signals of (53[plus minus]9) [mu][sup [plus minus]][pi][sup [minus plus]] coherent events and (19[plus minus]7) [mu][sup [plus minus]][pi][sup [minus plus]][pi][sup 0] coherent events are extracted. For [ital E][gt]10 GeV, the coherent pion production cross section is determined to be (3.2[plus minus]0.7)[times]10[sup [minus]38] cm[sup 2] per neon nucleus whereas the coherent [rho] production cross section is (2.1[plus minus]0.8)[times]10[sup [minus]38] cm[sup 2] per neon nucleus. These cross sections and the kinematical characteristics of the coherent events at [vert bar][ital t][vert bar][lt]0.1 GeV[sup 2] are found to be in general agreement with the predictions of a model based on the hadron dominance and, in the pion case, on the partially conserved axial-vector current hypothesis. Also discussed is the coherent production of systems consisting of three pions.

Abstract

The diffractive production of charmed strangeD s * and possiblyD s mesons by neutrinos and antineutrinos on nucleons in hydrogen, deuterium and neon targets is observed. The slope parameter of thet distribution is 3.3±0.8 (GeV)−2. The production rate per charged current neutrino interaction with an isoscalar target times the D s + →φτ+ branching fraction is (1.03±0.27)×10−4.

Abstract

From an exposure of the Fermilab 15-foot bubble chamber to the Tevatron quadrupole triplet neutrino beam, we have determined the ratio of neutral-current (NC) to charged-current (CC) interactions to be 0.288{plus minus}0.032 for events with visible hadron momentum above 10 GeV/{ital c}. The mean {nu}({bar {nu}}) event energy is 150 (110) GeV, which is higher than that for any previous beam. This result agrees with those from previous experiments at lower energies. The NC/CC ratio is derived for a combined sample of {nu} and {bar {nu}} events. A value of 0.274{plus minus}0.038 is obtained for the dominant {nu} component assuming {bar {nu}} NC/CC=0.39{plus minus}0.08. For events with visible hadron momentum above 25 GeV/{ital c}, where the neutral hadron contamination remaining in the NC sample is assumed to be negligible, the combined NC/CC is 0.323{plus minus}0.025 and the {ital K}{sup 0} production rates are 0.375{plus minus}0.064 per CC and 0.322{plus minus}0.073 per NC event. The corresponding {Lambda} rates are 0.161{plus minus}0.030 per CC and 0.113{plus minus}0.030 per NC event. The {ital K}{sup 0} and {Lambda} distributions of the fractional hadron energy variable {ital z} in NC events are consistent with those in CC events.

Abstract

The Fermilab 15-ft bubble chamber has been exposed to a quadrupole triplet neutrino beam produced at the Tevatron. The ratio of {nu} to {bar {nu}} in the beam is approximately 2.5. The mean event energy for {nu}-induced charged-current events is 150 GeV, and for {bar {nu}}-induced charged-current events it is 110 GeV. A total of 64 dimuon candidates (1 {mu}{sup +}{mu}{sup +}, 52 {mu}{sup {minus}}{mu}{sup +} and {mu}{sup +}{mu}{sup {minus}}, and 11 {mu}{sup {minus}}{mu}{sup {minus}}) is observed in the data sample of approximately 13 300 charged-current events. The number and properties of the {mu}{sup {minus}}{mu}{sup {minus}} and {mu}{sup +}{mu}{sup +} candidates are consistent with their being produced by background processes, the important sources being {pi} and {ital K} decay and punchthrough. The 90%-C.L. upper limit for {mu}{sup {minus}}{mu}{sup {minus}}/{mu}{sup {minus}} for muon momenta above 4 GeV/{ital c} is 1.2{times}10{sup {minus}3}, and for momenta above 9 GeV/{ital c} this limit is 1.1{times}10{sup {minus}3}. The opposite-sign-dimuon--to--single-muon ratio is (0.62{plus minus}0.13)% for muon momenta above 4 GeV/{ital c}. There are eight neutral strange particles in the opposite-sign sample, leading to a rate per dimuon event of 0.65{plus minus}0.29. The opposite-sign-dimuon sample is consistent with the hypothesis of charm production and decay.

Abstract

Data from a neutrino and antineutrino hydrogen experiment with BEBC are used to investigate transverse properties of the produced charged hadrons. Measurements are presented on average transverse momenta of charged pions as functions of Feynman-x and the hadronic mass, on the transverse momentum flow within an event and on jet-related quantities. The main features of the data are well described by the LUND model. The data favour a version of the model in which soft gluon effects are included and the primordial transverse momentum of the quarks in the proton is small. Effects from 1st order QCD (hard gluon emission) are negligible.

Abstract

Neutral kaon to negative pion production ratios fromvp and\(\bar vp\) charged current interactions in BEBC are presented and compared with LUND fragmentation model predictions. Good agreement is obtained with a strangeness suppression factor λ=0.203±0.014(stat)±0.010(sys). No evidence is seen for an energy dependence of λ in our kinematic region.

Abstract

Data obtained with the bubble chamber BEBC at CERN are used for the first significant test of Adler's prediction for the neutrino and antineutrino-proton scattering cross sections at vanishing four-momentum transfer squaredQ2. An Extended Vector Meson Dominance Model (EVDM) is applied to extrapolate Adler's prediction to experimentally accessible values ofQ2. The data show good agreement with Adler's prediction forQ2→0 thus confirming the PCAC hypothesis in the kinematical region of high leptonic energy transfer ν>2 GeV. The good agreement of the data with the theoretical predictions also at higherQ2, where the EVDM terms are dominant, also supports this model. However, an EVDM calculation without PCAC is clearly ruled out by the data.

Abstract

The production of the meson resonances ϱ(770) (all three charge states), η(550), ω(783) andf 2(1270) in $$\bar v$$ Ne and ν Ne charged current interactions is investigated in a bubble chamber experiment with BEBC at CERN. Except for thef 2, the main features of resonance production are reasonably well described by the Lund model, although the average resonance multiplicities are overestimated by the model by (67±30)%. The average multiplicities of all resonances, including thef 2, are well reproduced by a semiempirical model, whose parameters were determined from hadron interaction data.

Abstract

Backward proton and pion production is studied in ν and {Mathematical expression} charged current interactions in neon. The results are compared with other experiments and theory. The complete backward proton data is compatible with protons produced by reinteractions in the nucleus. However in events with only one proton, muon variables appear correlated to those for the backward proton, as expected by the two-nucleon correlation model. © 1989 Springer-Verlag.

Abstract

Data on the reactionsv μ p→ μ− pπ+ and $$ \bar v_\mu p \to \mu ^ + p\pi ^ - $$ in the Δ(1232) region are presented and a test of the PCAC hypothesis, using a modified version of the Adler model, is performed. The analysis is based on 1081 events in the neutrino and on 180 events in the antineutrino reaction, obtained in a bubble chamber experiment with BEBC at CERN. The experimental cross-sections for an invariant hadronic massW10 GeV are determined to be (0.628±0.059)·10−38 cm2 for the neutrino and (0.168±0.023)·10−38 cm2 for the antineutrino reaction. TheQ 2 andW distributions, the density matrix elements of the Δ resonance, and moments of the pion angular distribution are discussed. The data are found to be in good agreement with the Adler model in theQ 2 region below 1 GeV2. A maximum likelihood fit for the axial massm A in the axial-vector form factor yields a value ofm A =1.31±0.12 GeV. At lowQ 2 the data confirm the PCAC hypothesis and the discrepancy, formerly observed between the experimental and theoretical cross-sections forv μ p→ μ− pπ+ at low momentum transfers (Q 2≲0.2 GeV2), is understood as being due to inadequate pion ‘off-mass-shell’ corrections.

Abstract

Inclusive ϱ0 production has been studied in antineutrino-proton charged current interactions, using a sample of 3340 events obtained in BEBC filled with hydrogen and exposed to the CERN wideband antineutrino beam. An average multiplicity of 0.11 ± 0.02ϱ0 per event at a mean hadronic mass W of 4.2 GeV is observed. The ϱ0 production characteristics are determined as functions of pT, xF, and z. The ratio ϱ0/“π0” is found to be low at small z values consistent with centrally produced pions coming mainly from resonances. At large z values this ratio approaches 0.45 ± 0.15 which is compatible with a vector/pseudoscalar meson direct production ratio of one. The results are compared with those obtained from neutrino-proton interactions in the same experimental set-up.

Abstract

The ratios Rvp and Rvp of the neutral current to charged current cross sections for neutrino and antineutrino interactions on protons have been measured in BEBC. The beam was the CERN SPS 400 GeV wideband beam. The bubble chamber, equipped with the standard External Muon Identifier, was surrounded with an additional plane of wire chambers (Internal Picket Fence), which was added to improve neutral current event identification. For a total transverse momentum of the charged hadrons above 0.45 GeV/c and a charged multiplicity of at least 3, it was found that Rvp = 0.384 ± 0.015 and Rvp = 0.338 ± 0.014 ± 0.016, corresponding to a value of sin 2 θ w (M w MS of 0.225 ± 0.030 . Combining the results from hydrogen and an isoscalar target, the differences of the neutral current chiral coupling constants were found to be u2l−d2L = −0.080 ± 0.043 ± 0.012 and u2R−d2R = 0.021±0.055±0.028.

Abstract

Exposures of the Ne/H 2 filled Big European Bubble Chamber (BEBC) to a dichromatic neutrino (antineutrino) beam produced by 400 GeV protons of the CERN SPS yielded ∼ 3100 events with a negative, and ∼ 1100 with a positive, muon. The neutrino flux is determined from the muon flux in the shielding. Assuming a linear energy dependence of the cross section, the values σ E between 20 and 200 GeV are found to be 0.657 ± 0.012 (stat.) ± 0.027 (syst.) and 0.309 ± 0.009 (stat.) ± 0.013 (syst.) cm 2 (GeV nucleon) −1 , for neutrinos and antineutrinos, respectively. The scaling variable q 2 E decreases significantly with increasing energy both for neutrinos and antineutrinos.

Abstract

Within the framework of the quark-parton model, the quark and anti-quark structure functions of the proton have been measured by fitting them to the distributions of the events in the Bjorkeny variable. The data used form the largest sample of neutrino and antineutrino interactions on a pure hydrogen target available, and come from exposures of BEBC to the CERN wide band neutrino and antineutrino beams. It is found that the ratiodv/uv of valence quark distributions falls with increasing Bjorkenx. In the context of the quark-parton model the results constrain the isospin composition of the accompanying diquark system. Models involving scattering from diquarks are in disagreement with the data.

Abstract

The inclusive production of K0's and Λ's has been investigated in neutrino and antineutrino interactions in BEBC, filled with a neon-hydrogen mixture. The inclusive rates for the 3083 (1022) ν (ν) induced charged current events are (23.0 ± 1.7)% ((21.9 ± 2.8)%) for K0's and (5.7 ± 0.7)% ((6.5 ± 1.2)%) for Λ's. The general behaviour of the K0's and Λ's is found to be similar to that in νp interactions and π+p interactions at lower 〈W〉. In the hadronic c.m.s. K0's are produced mostly forwards, Λ's predominantly in the backward hemisphere. The data indicate that K0's produced in ν interactions on average carry a larger fraction of the total available momentum than those in ν induced reactions. The dependences of the average transverse momentum on the variables Q2, W2 and Bjorken x are presented.

Abstract

Lambda hyperons fromv p and\(\bar v\)p charged current interactions have been analysed for polarization. A significant polarization is observed for Λ particles in the quasi-elastic region for both types of interactions. Part of this polarization is due to the decay of highly polarized Σ(1385) resonances. The results are compared with simple predictions of the quark parton model.

Abstract

A novel and efficient kinematic method is used to estimate the number of ν τ charged current interactions with E ν > 20 GeV in the BEBC beam dump experiment. The result, −14±12 ν τ events, is consistent with zero. The ratio of D s to D meson production in 400 GeV proton interactions in copper is estimated to be below 0.65 at 90% c.l. The oscillation probability P ( ν e → ν τ ) averaged over the electron-(anti)neutrino spectrum is found to be below 18%. The hypothesis that ν e and ν τ are identical is excluded by about 6 standard deviations. A remarkable event is described: it contains a muon, a high p T photon and a high p T hadron.

Abstract

A study is presented of μe events from an exposure of BEBC, filed with an heavyH 2/Ne mixture, to a wide band antineutrino beam at the CERN SPS. The promptμ + e − rate, based on the observation of 45 events withp μ>4 GeV/c andp e>0.8 GeV/c, is found to be 0.31±0.05±0.02%, in agreement with previous determinations made on much smaller statistics. The differential kinematical variables characterizing the events and the content of strange particles are as expected for the production of charmed hadrons which subsequently decay semi-leptonically. An upper limit of 2.0±10−4 at 90% C.L. is given for the production rate of promptμ + e + events. No evidence is found for a significant production of Beauty hadrons.

Abstract

The average transverse momentum squared, 〈p⊥2〉, of hadrons is studied as a function of W2 and of Q2 for ν and ν interactions on an isoscalar target. An increase of 〈p⊥2〉 with W2 is observed for the hadrons emitted forward in the hadronic c.m.s. The p⊥ dependence of the fragmentation function is found to factorise from the structure function at fixed W, but does not factorise at fixed Q2. Unlike the case of forward-going particles, the 〈p⊥2〉 of hadrons going backward in the c.m.s. shows no strong dependence on W2.

Abstract

New limits on lepton mixing parameters are derived from a search for decays of heavy neutrinos in a proton beam dump experiment. The limits | U oi | 2 , | U e i | 2 −6 −10 −7 are obtained for neutrino mass eigenstates v i of mass between 0.5 and 1.75 GeV, which can be produced through mixing in charmed D meson decays. This is the first such limit on | U o i | 2 for neutrino masses greater than 0.5 GeV. For the mass eigenstate v 3 in particular, we obtain the limits | U o 3 | 2 −7 −10 −8 , | U e 3 | 2 −9 −10 −10 for the mass range 150–190 MeV, assuming the v 3 to be produced directly in charmed F meson decays.

Abstract

In an experiment with the hydrogen bubble chamber BEBC at CERN multiplicities of hadrons produced in νp and vp interactions have been investigated. Results are presented on the multiplicities of charged hadrons and neutral pions, forward and backward multiplicities of charged hadrons and correlations between forward and backward multiplicities. Comparisons are made with hadronic reactions and e+e− annihilation. In the framework of the quark-parton model the data imply similar charged multiplicities for the fragments of a u- and a d-quark, and a larger multiplicities for the fragments of a uu- than for a ud-diquark. The correlation data suggest independent fragmentation of the quark and diquark for hadronic masses above ∼ 7 GeV and local charge compensation within an event.

ν e induced events obtained in a 200 GeV narrow-band beam have been studied and compared to the number expected from K e3 + decay. Agreement is found between the expected and observed numbers allowing limits to be set on ν e → ν x mixing.

The asymmetry between the prompt electron (anti) neutrino and the prompt muon (anti) neutrino event rates above 20 GeV is A e μ = (N e − N μ (N c + N μ ) = 0.07 ± 0.08 corresponding to an Ne/Nμ ratio of 1.14−0.16−0.19. The cross section weighted charge asymmetry for electrons and muons combined is A ν ν = 0.15 ± 0.08 . The number of D decays into ν e and ν μ is (4.1 ± 0.9) × 10 −4 per incident proton. No evidence for ντ interactions was found.

Usind data from avp and\(\bar v\)p experiment with BEBC at CERN, the rates for inclusive production ofD*+,Λc+ andD0 invp scattering and ofD*− in\(\bar v\)p scattering are measured. Some examples of the exclusive production ofD*+,Λc+ and∑c++ are given. The cross section for the reactionvp→μ−c++ is estimated.

Abstract

Nearly 40000 neutrino and antineutrino interactions in BEBC are compared to measure the differences between neon and deuterium in the quark and antiquark distributions and in the nucleon structure functions. The ratio of Ne to D cross sections indicates some decrease between x∼0.2 and x∼0.6. The y distributions show there is no significant increase in the neon sea, but prefer a small decrease. Taken altogether, the x and y distributions and the measured total cross-sections indicate some change in the shape of the valence distributions. Abstract

Comparing the kinematical distributions of events obtained on neon and deuterium targets in similar experimental conditions reveals a reduction of the neutrino and antineutrino charged current cross section per nucleon in neon at low Q 2 . The effect, interpreted as due to geometric shadowing of the weak propagator in interactions of neutrinos and antineutrinos with nuclei, agrees well with predictions derived from PCAC.

Abstract

A sample of over 25,000 fully measured neutrino and antineutrino charged current interactions in BEBC includes 192 dilepton candidates. The prompt signal after subtraction of background is 41 ±7μ+e-, 35±7μ+μ- events from {Mathematical expression} interactions, and 32±7μ-μ+ events from ν interactions. There are 2 trileptons, μ-μ-e+ and μ-μ-μ+. Results are compared with other experimental data and with the standard model. Abstract

The cross section for coherent production of a single π- meson in charged current antineutrino interactions on neon nuclei has been measured in BEBC to be (175±25) 10-40 cm2/neon nucleus, averaged over the energy spectrum of the antineutrino wide band beam at the CERN SPS; this corresponds to (0.9±0.1) % of the total charged current {Mathematical expression} cross section. The distributions of kinematical variables are in agreement with theoretical predictions based on the PCAC hypothesis and the meson dominance model; in particular, the Q2 dependence is well described by a propagator containing a mass m=(1.35±0.18) GeV. The absolute value of the cross section is also in agreement with the model. Abstract

BEBC filled in turn with hydrogen, and with a neon-hydrogen mixture, was exposed to the CERN SPS wide band neutrino and antineutrino beams. The ratios of the charged-current cross sections per nucleon, σ(νH2) σ(νNe) and σ(νH2) σ(νNe), between 20 and 300 GeV were found to be 0.656 ± 0.020 and 1.425 ± 0.052, respectively. Multiplying these ratios by the revised cross sections in neon, σ(νNe) E = (0.723 ± 0.038) × 10-38 cm2/GeV per nucleon and σ(νNe) E = (0.351 ± 0.019) × 10-38 cm2/GeV per nucleon, and their ratio, σ(νNe) σ(νNe) = 0.485 ± 0.020, yields values for the total charged-current cross sections on protons, σ(νp)/E and σ(νp) E, of (0.474 ± 0.029) × 10-38 cm2/GeV and (0.500 ± 0.032) × 10-38 cm2/GeV. respectively, and a value for the ratio σ(νp) σ(νp) of 1.053 ± 0.066. © 1986., 0, SCOPUS: ar.j, info:eu-repo/semantics/published

Abstract

Evidence for a significant higher twist contribution to high z π- production in antineutrino scattering is presented. In events with W>3 GeV and Q2>1 GeV2 in our data, it accounts for (51 ±8)% of all π- with z above 0.5. It is consistent with the z-Q2 correlations of Berger's higher twist prediction. The data are inconclusive concerning the predicted y-z correlation and pT dependence. Abstract

Coherent production of ρ- mesons in charged current antineutrino interactions on neon nuclei is studied in the BEBC bubble chamber exposed to the CERN SPS wide band beam. The cross section is measured to be (95±25)·10-40 cm2 per neon nucleus, averaged over the beam energy spectrum. The distributions of kinematical variables and the absolute value of the cross section are in agreement with theoretical predictions based on the CVC hypothesis and the vector meson dominance model. © 1987 Springer-Verlag.
