Purpose. In this paper, we discuss the genetic model and emphasize many pending issues on the carbonate replacement textures of the Amensif Zn-Pb-Cu-Ag±Au-Bi deposit (the Western High Atlas, Morocco), the source of metal and the possible contribution of the Azegour granite to this ore genesis. Methods. This study is based on geological mapping, drill core and petrography analysis in combination with ICP-AES, XRD, and SEM data. Findings. The detailed mineralogy consists mainly of sulfides and sulfosalts. The main ore minerals include arsenopyrite, pyrite, sphalerite, chalcopyrite, galena and bismuthinite. Mineral inclusions related to isomorphic sulfosalts are found in galena and/or chalcopyrite. They include matildite, galenobismutite, pavonite, cosalite, schirmerite, krupkaite, ramdohrite, wittichenite, emplectite, luzonite, gustavite, hedleyite, krennerite, wittite, freibergite, tetrahedrite, tennantite and native bismuth. The supergene minerals are anglesite, covellite, malachite, azurite and goethite. In addition, specific replacements are observed between dolomites and sulfides, indicating an interaction between hydrothermal fluid and host rocks. Four ore stages have been identified based on the relationship between mineral phases and ore-forming conditions. The results of this study indicate that Ag and Au precipitation is controlled by the Bi-Te-Pb-S system, while enrichment in Bi, Te and Se sulfosalts and Bitelluride indicates a magmatic source of the ore-forming fluid. The study delves into the genetic model of the Amensif Zn-Pb-Cu-Ag±Au-Bi deposit in the Western High Atlas, Moroc-co, with a focus on carbonate replacement textures, while also exploring its classification as either a carbonate replacement deposit or a skarn deposit. The Açdif gold deposit is located in the Zenaga Inlier (central Anti-Atlas), approximately 120 km southwest of the city of Ouarzazate. It hosts gold mineralization associated with a shear zone affecting the metamorphic and magmatic formations of the Eburnean basement. It mainly consists of alternating micaschists, augen gneisses, and orthogneiss. These crystalline rock assemblages are intruded by a variety of granitoids. These are the Azguemerzi granitoids, which are locally affected by Eburnean deformation. Subsequently, these facies are intersected by a swarm of mafic dykes, which show a variety of rocks ranging from microgabbro-dolerite to quartz diorite. Detailed mapping, petro-mineralogical investigations, and geochemistry of the major and trace elements of these magmatic intrusions suggests the following: (i) for the granodiorite rocks (deposited before the basic dykes), a calc-alkaline affinity, with a chemical signature similar to a syn-collisional context; (ii) for mafic dykes, a contemporaneous emplacement of these mafic intrusions with an evolutionary process controlled by fractional crystallization of the same magma of continental tholeiites, whose chemical composition is comparable to that of enriched MORBs (EMORBs). These continental tholeiites are related to a distensive tectonic context that would have affected the Zenaga inlier prior to the Pan-African orogeny. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Located in the southeastern region of Morocco, the Zagora area mainly relies on groundwater as a source of water supply. However, this groundwater is often of concern, due to the limited recharge and unfavorable geological conditions for the development of the aquifer. Despite this, private wells in the Zagora ditch reveal relatively rich water resources. Geochemical and isotopic studies were conducted in the area to understand the origin of the groundwater and its salinity, aiding in informed water management strategies to assist in better planning and regulation of well construction, as well as in mitigating the impacts of high salinity on local water supply and agricultural systems. The results show that the water quality varies, with some wells having conductivity values in excess of 5 mS/cm. Most groundwater samples have high salinity and low pH due to the CO2 dissolved in groundwater. Geochemical analysis indicated two chemical facies: chloride–sulfate calcic/magnesic and bicarbonate calcic/magnesic. The presence of Na+ and Cl− indicated that the origin of these two elements in these waters was the dissolution of halite, with some samples showing an enrichment of Na+ compared to Cl−. This could be attributed to cation exchange. The concentration of Ca2+ and HCO3− suggested that their origin is the dissolution of calcite and the weathering of calcium silicate minerals such as plagioclase. The isotopic analysis showed that the δ18O values ranged from −10.98‰ to −8.54‰, and δ2H values ranged from −75.9‰ to −62.3‰. This indicated that the groundwater originated from the High Atlas with a recharge altitude between 2600 m and 2800 m. Purpose. The purpose of the present research is to provide a new lithological, structural and magmatic features of the Oumjrane-Boukerzia Mining District. The results obtained are used to guide exploration works for identifying the new Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn depositions and Ba-bearing mineralization within the whole Oumjrane-Boukerzia domain. Methods. This research is based on detailed mapping, structural surveys and geochemical studies performed on the magmatic rocks in the studied area. Findings. Structural and microstructural analyses of the studied area have revealed three complex polyphase tectonic events related to the Variscan orogeny: (i) an extensive phase during the Devonian period; (ii) a NW-SE compressional phase of Namuro-Westphalian age; (iii) a NE-SW compressional phase of Stephanian-Autunian age, and (iv) an extensive late phase probably related to the opening of the Central Atlantic ocean during the Late Trias-Jurassic periods. The sedimentary rocks of the district are locally intruded by small undated gabbroic intrusions. Geochemically, these gabbroic bodies are described as olivine-rich gabbros with a continental tholeiitic affinity and suggested to be related to the Central Atlantic magmatic province (CAMP) during the Pangea break-up. The present study describes the host-rocks and structural events responsible for Cu, Ni, Zn, Pb deposition and Ba-bearing mineralization in the Oumjrane-Boukerzia Mining District (Eastern Anti-Atlas, Morocco). We provide the first large field investigation of more than 20 gold deposits and sites along the Keraf suture zone, covering an area of ~15,000 km2. The area shows diverse structural settings for gold mineralization in greenschist, amphibolite, and hornfels metamorphosed rocks. The reverse fault and dyke-hosted settings appear to be the most favourable for forming gold deposits. Two major N-S-trending, ~300-km-long corridors of deformation are delineated (West and East) but only the West seems important for gold. From fluid inclusions, 6 types of fluids are distinguished based on specific volatile contents and proportions. Most types can be related to fluid evolution by hydrothermal reactions and phase separations from a primitive fluid of metamorphic origin, containing H2O, CO2, N2, CH4, C2H6, and H2. Regional hydrothermal fields are identified based on the combinations of structural settings and fluid types. The northern field is defined as a single large hydrothermal system accounting for the mineralization of the 3 gold deposits (WG-03, UTM and Central). For sites along the West Corridor, such as Toubi, Anas, NW and Shereik, multiple and overlapping hydrothermal systems are necessary to explain the various fluid types and structural settings, even at the deposit scale (Shereik). Conversely, other sites (SW, Yasmine, Korup, Saijd, Dardora, Negeim, and SE) formed by localized individual hydrothermal systems. The documentation of fluids containing ethane at numerous sites and deposits is the most significant outcome. Such ethane-bearing fluids are generated by the metamorphism of carbonaceous-pyritic sedimentary rocks. These rocks are considered one of the best sources for providing ligands and gold for the formation of orogenic gold deposits. Consequently, the Keraf suture zone, composed mainly of carbonaceous turbidites, is interpreted to have provided such source rocks in the suture zone and below the adjacent cratons during the collision, forming orogenic gold deposits (graphical abstract). In Morocco, the oriental Anti-Atlas encompasses many valuable deposits, including that of copper (Cu) which is located in the Sidi Flah-Bouskour inlier. This deposit is known for its high importance on the national scale. The present work aims to compare the Hyperion raw and fused data for mapping Cu mineralization. After applying the pre-processing steps on the images used, the fusion (hyperspectral/multispectral) process was done using the colour normalized spectral sharpening method. Subsequently, the mineralogical mapping task was performed using the mixture tuned matched filtering and the independent component analysis methods. In the last step, a geophysical data, a field survey and spectroradiometric measurements were done for checking and validating the results obtained. The analysis showed a high performance of the fused images for mineralogical mapping. The massif of Saghro in Moroccan Anti-Atlas is known for several important economic deposits. Thanks to its high potential in terms of production, the deposit of Bouskour is considered among the most important and promising ones on the national scale. The objective of this work is to evaluate the potential of the new Multispectral Landsat-8 OLI and Sentinel-2A sensors in comparison with the Terra ASTER sensor in mineralogical mapping. This task was completed using the band ratio (BR), independent component analysis (ICA) and mixture tuned matched filtering (MTMF) methods. In addition, a field survey was carried out in order to control and validate the obtained mineralogical abundances. The approach followed gave satisfactory results with respect to the field data and the previous studies. The Roc Blanc Pb-Zn-Ag ± Au vein system in the Variscan Central Jebilet massif, Morocco, is confined within the contact metamorphic aureole of S- and I-type calc-alkaline granitic stocks (327 ± 4 to 295 ± 15 Ma) along the Marrakech Shear Zone. Host rocks consist of a succession of greenschist- to amphibolite-facies metasedimentary and metavolcaniclastic rocks of Carboniferous age. The ore mineralogy is predominantly base metal and Ag-bearing sulfides and sulfosalts, intergrown with quartz and carbonates. Late-stage gold mineralization is commonly present as electrum in intimate association with all major generations of sulfide and sulfosalt minerals. Ore-related hydrothermal alteration includes silicification, sericitization, chloritization, and carbonatization. Chlorite and arsenopyrite geothermometry suggest mean temperatures of 364 and 350 °C; respectively. Calculated δ18Ofluid values of 15 to 18‰ are consistent with metamorphic fluid sources, by which the mineralizing fluids were produced during the emplacement of granitic intrusions and subsequent devolatilization of graphitic black shale and interlayered carbonate beds. Lead and strontium isotope data constrain the source of the ore-forming components (i.e., metals and sulfur) to the enclosing host rocks. A decrease in temperature during fluid ascent and subsequent alteration-associated fluid-rock interaction resulted in the deposition of the Pb-Zn-Ag ± Au mineralization in a post-collisional extensional setting. The Imiter Ag-Hg deposit is located in the Preeambrian volcano-sedimentary formations of the Saghro inlier (eastern part of the Anti-Atlas Mountains, Morocco). The orebodies consist of northeast-southwest to east-west veins and lenses hosted by Cryogenian black shales and graywackes and Neoproterozoic conglomerates, and are controlled by an east-west fault network, the so-called Imiter fault. Mineralogical and paleo-fluid geochemistry investigations (microthermometry, Raman spectroscopy, LA-ICP-MS on individual inclusions, bulk crush-leach analyses, and stable isotope data (O, H)) show that the main Ag ore stage is related to circulation of deep-basinal sedimentary brines (Na-K-(Mg) (salinity = 16.7 to ≥26 wt % NaCl equiv, molar Cl/Br = 330, δ18O = 2.15-2.35‰SMOW, and δD = -53.8 to -65.5‰SMOW), at temperatures of about 180° to 220°C and hydrostatic pressures. The main driving mechanism for silver ore deposition is the dilution of ore-bearing brines by a low-salinity meteoric fluid containing a low-density volatile component (N2 > CH4 > CO2), Th = 180° to 220°C, δ18O = -1.4‰SMOW, and δD of about -28.2‰SMOW. Silver content of the brines ranges from 2 to 30 mmol/ kg solution (up to 3,200 ppm Ag, avg Ag concentration about 900 ppm), whereas the maximum Ag content found in dilute waters is about 0.4 mmol/kg solution (40 ppm). The ore-forming model proposed for the Imiter deposit is (1) Ag extraction from the basement by the penetration of deep-basinal brines, and (2) deposition in a structural trap through fluid mixing with recharge fluids. This model is comparable to that described worldwide for the origin of Pb-Zn, F, Ba, and U deposits near unconformities between basement and sedimentary basins. Similarities among the major Ag deposits from the Anti-Atlas (Imiter, Zgounder, Bou Azzer) strongly suggest that they resulted from a unique event, likely related to the opening of the Atlantic Ocean. The silver ores are superimposed on the same lineament as a preexisting uneconomic Pan-African Co-Ni-As system linked to magmatic intrusions, but Ag ores have no genetic relationship with them. The Igoudrane mine with a total production of 700,000 t of ore grading 485 g/t Ag is currently one of the most productive mines in the Imiter district of the eastern Anti-Atlas in Morocco. The silver-rich ± base metal deposit occurs dominantly as vein- and hydrothermal breccia-hosted orebodies at the interface between the lower Ediacaran turbidites of the Saghro Group and the unconformably overlying, dominantly felsic volcanic, and volcaniclastic rocks of the late Ediacaran Ouarzazate Group. Higher-grade ores are lithologically hosted by the uppermost organic-rich black shale unit and structurally controlled by the intersection of subvertical NW- and NE-trending fault systems. Ore-related hydrothermal alteration includes, in order of decreasing abundance, carbonatization, silicification, sericitization, and chloritization. Three primary paragenetic stages of veining and associated silver ± base metal mineralization have been recognized: (1) early pyrite + quartz + Ag-bearing sulfides and sulfosalts; (2) main Ag-bearing sulfides and sulfosalts + calcite ± fluorite ± dolomite; and (3) late quartz + calcite + base-metal sulfides (galena, sphalerite, pyrite, chalcopyrite). Irrespective of the ore stage, the dominant Ag-bearing ore minerals are Ag-Hg amalgam, argentite, freibergite, acanthite, polybasite, pyrargyrite, and proustite. Fluid inclusion data show a trend of decreasing temperatures with time, from the main silver stage (Th = 180 ± 12 °C) to late base-metal stage (Th = 146 ± 7 °C), consistent with fluid mixing, cooling, and/or dilution. The coexistence of aqueous-rich and vapor-rich fluid inclusions together with variations in bulk salinity (NaCl + CaCl2) of the mineralizing fluids during the main silver stage, at similar temperatures, indicate that boiling and subsequent degassing occurred during the main ore-forming event due to a pressure decrease. Calculated δ18Ofluid values along with REE+Y and Sr isotope constraints suggest that the ore-forming fluids originated from a predominantly magmatic source, although incursion of meteoric waters during collapse of the hydrothermal system could have contributed to deposition. The post-ore, base-metal quartz-carbonate-dominated mineralization was deposited from dilute Ca-Na-Cl-bearing fluids at temperature below 150 °C. Overall, fluid–rock interaction with the black shales along major faults and thin permeable horizons, boiling-degassing—with subsequent fluid mixing, cooling, and/or dilution—were the main mechanisms of silver deposition. The Khzama ophiolite is a highly dismembered complex located in the Siroua inlier of the Moroccan Anti-Atlas Belt. It consists of ultramafic rocks, cumulate gabbros, sheeted dikes, pillow lavas, and an overlying volcano-sedimentary sequence. Three main tectonic slices of sheeted dike complexes are studied in detail along three rivers, exposing well preserved outcrops where individual dikes are clearly distinguishable from the intruded host rock (Assif n'Tinzla, Assif n'Tasriwine, and Assif n'Iriri). Sheeted dikes of the Khzama ophiolitic complex are basaltic to andesitic in composition, displaying a clear sub-alkaline nature. We identify two sets of dikes that originate from lower High-Ti series (HTS) lavas and overlying upper Low-Ti series (LTS) lava. The immobile trace-element signatures of these rocks point to a genesis on a backarc environment with magmas sourced in a supra-subduction zone (SSZ) at the spinel peridotite zone. The obtained SHRIMP U-Pb data of the gabbro represent the first radiometric age of zircon extracted from the mafic rocks that were intruded by the sheeted dike complex of the Khzama ophiolite. These grains yield a concordia age of 763 ± 5 Ma, which is consistent with the 761.1 + 1.9/−1.6 and 762 + 1/−2 Ma U-Pb zircon ages of plagiogranites of Siroua. Based on their mineralogy, modal proportions, and major element chemistry, the felsic dikes are classified as high silica–low alumina trondhjemites or plagiogranites. These plagiogranites were likely formed by the partial melting of mafic rocks rather than by extreme fractional crystallization. A plagiogranite dated at 777 ± 4.7 Ma (U-Pb on zircon) is significantly older than the ca. 762 Ma plagiogranites previously recorded for the Khzama locality, suggesting a long-lived supra-subduction zone (SSZ) with conditions for the hydrous melting of mafic rocks. The giant Tizert copper deposit is considered as the largest copper resource in the western Anti-Atlas (Morocco). The site is characterized by Cu mineralization carried by malachite, chalcocite, covellite, bornite and chalcopyrite; azurite is not observed. The host rocks are mainly limestones (Formation of Tamjout Dolomite) and sandstones/siltstones (Basal Series) of the Ediacaran/Cambrian transition. The supergene enrichment is most likely related to episodes of uplift/doming (last event since 30 Ma), which triggered the exhumation of primary/hypogene mineralization (chalcopyrite, pyrite, galena, chalcocite I and bornite I), generating their oxidation and the precipitation of secondary/supergene sulfides, carbonates and Fe-oxyhydroxides. The Tizert supergene deposit mainly consists of (i) a residual patchwork of laterite rich in Fe-oxyhydroxides; (ii) a saprolite rich in malachite, or "green oxide zone" where primary structures such as stratification are preserved; (iii) a cementation zone containing secondary sulfides (covellite, chalcocite II and bornite II). The abundance of Cu carbonates results from the rapid neutralization of acidic meteoric fluids, due to oxidation of primary sulfides, by carbonate host rocks. Chlorite is also involved in the neutralization processes in the sandstones/siltstones of the Basal Series, in which supergene clays, such as kaolinite and smectites, subsequently precipitated. At Tizert, as can be highlighted in other supergene Cu-deposits around the world, azurite is absent due to low pCO2 and relatively high pH conditions. In addition to copper, Ag enrichment is also observed in weathered rocks; Fe-oxyhydroxides contain high Zn, As, and Pb contents. However, these secondary enrichments are quite low compared to Cu in the whole Tizert site, which is therefore, considered as relatively homogeneous. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This work provides an overview of the geological, geochemical, and metallogenic data available up to date on the Moroccan massive sulphide deposits, including some new results, and then discusses the evidences for the epigenetic and syngenetic hypotheses. All of the ore deposits are located within a crustal block located at the intersection between two major shear zones and are characterized by a sustained and long-lived magmatic activity. The ore deposits are located within second-order shear zones, which played an important role in controlling the geometry of the mineralization. The mineralization lacks the unequivocal textural and structural features that are indicative of a sedimentary or diagenetic origin, and a syntectonic to late-tectonic pyrite-rich assemblage is superimposed on an earlier, pretectonic to syntectonic pyrrhotite-rich mineralization. Each deposit has a distinctive pyrrhotite sulfur isotopic signature, while the sulfur isotopic signature of pyrite is similar in all deposits. Lead isotopes suggest a shift from a magmatic source during the pyrrhotite-rich mineralization to a source that is inherited from the host shales during the pyrite-rich mineralization. The O/H isotopic signatures record a predominance of fluids of metamorphic derivation. These results are consistent with a model in which an earlier pyrrhotite-rich mineralization, which formed during transtension, was deformed and then remobilized to pyrite-rich mineralization during transpression. The Jbel Saghro is interpreted as part of a long-lived silicic large igneous province. The area comprises two lithostructural complexes. The Lower Complex consists of folded metagreywackes and N070–090°E dextral shear zones, which roughly results from a NW–SE to NNW–SSE shortening direction related to a D1 transpressive tectonic stage. D1 is also combined with syntectonic plutons emplaced between ca. 615 and 575 Ma. The Upper Complex is defined by ash-flow caldera emplacements, thick and widespread ignimbrites, lavas and volcaniclastic sedimentary rocks with related intrusives that were emplaced in three main magmatic flare ups at ca. 575, 565 and 555 Ma. It lies unconformably on the Lower Complex units and was affected by a D2 trantensive tectonic stage. Between 550 and 540 Ma, the magmatic activity became slightly alkaline and of lower extent. Ore deposits show specific features, but remain controlled by the same structural setting: a NNW–SSE shortening direction related to both D1 and D2 stages. Porphyry Au(–Cu–Mo) and intrusion-related gold deposits were emplaced in an earlier stage between 580 and 565 Ma. Intermediate sulfidation epithermal deposits may have been emplaced during lull periods after the second and (or) the third flare-ups (560–550 Ma). Low sulfidation epithermal deposits were emplaced late during the felsic alkaline magmatic stage (550–520 Ma). The D2 stage, therefore, provided extensional structures that enabled fluid circulations and magmatic-hydrothermal ore forming processes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The genesis of the base-metal massive sulfide deposits hosted within the Moroccan Hercynian Jebilet and Guemassa Massifs is still under debate. No consensus currently exists between the two models that have been proposed to explain the deposits, i.e., (1) syngenetic volcanogenic massive sulfide mineralization, and (2) synmetamorphic tectonic fluid-assisted epigenetic mineralization. Conversely, researchers agree that all Hercynian massive sulfide deposits in Morocco are deformed, even though 3D structural mapping at the deposit scale is still lacking. Therefore, while avoiding the use of a model-driven approach, the main aim of this contribution is to establish a first-order structural pattern and the controls of the Hajjar base metal deposit. We used a classical structural geology toolbox in surface and subsurface mining work to image finite strain at different levels. Our data demonstrate that: i) the Hajjar area is affected by a single foliation plane (not two) which developed during a single tectonic event encompassing a HT metamorphism. This syn-metamorphic deformation is not restricted to the Hajjar area, as it is widespread at the western Meseta scale, and it occurred during Late Carboniferous times; ii) the Hajjar ore deposit is hosted within a regional transpressive right-lateral NE-trending shear zone in which syn- to post-metamorphic ductile to brittle shear planes are responsible for significant inflexion (or virgation) of the foliation yielding an anastomosing pattern within the Hajjar shear zone. Again, this feature is not an exception, as various Late Carboniferous-Permian regional scale wrenching shear zones are recognized throughout the Hercynian Meseta orogenic segment.
