This article presents parallel and collaborative research and teaching practices that expand approaches to encountering site through the lenses of observation and performative drawing. These drawing practices record phenomena, whilst in their presence, through a designed temporal framework. This asks the drawer to observe over a duration of time and to record the world in motion. By spending an extended period of time in the presence of the phenomenon of our study, with active receptivity, our capacity to see shifts. Rather than the drawn outcomes of this observation recording a past time, the notion of experiential time -- and an expanded present -- is embedded in the act of drawing. These processes of observation and performative drawing allude to Edmund Husserl's expression of a 'thickened present'. The outcomes of this drawing practice demonstrate that observational techniques are embodied, relational, temporal and generative and so offer an alternative approach to site analysis. How this approach sits within the larger domain of spatial temporal relationships and forms of drawing are also considered.

Documentation within architecture refers to working drawings that are produced to envisage an imagined building. However, the definition of the word “document” refers to a record of events, that is, post factum evidence. Architectural drawing tends to represent the non-existent. Drawing as a record, or post factum documentation is perceived as separate from the design process, supposedly coming well after the “design” has been completed. This essay examines post factum documentation via the example of the reconstruction of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe's German Pavilion, designed for the 1928/29 International Exposition in Barcelona. Examining post factum drawings as part of the design process reveals that they are not merely neutral “documents”. They are interpretive and, therefore, exploratory and generative. The aim is to acknowledge the recursive, reflective nature of the design process; to displace the 1:1 built object as the end point of the design process; and to explore the critical facility of drawings. Purpose: To review the association of an abnormal prenatal sonogram with most recent serum creatinine in patients with proven posterior urethral valves (PUV). Methods: Since 1992, all live-born patients between 1992-2004 with clinically proven PUV, with postnatally proven PUV, from 2 pediatric tertiary care centers, were reviewed for age at diagnosis, most recent serum creatinine, presence of chronic renal failure (CRF) (serum creatinine >2 standard deviations above normal for age), or end stage renal disease (dialysis or transplant). Available antenatal reports from the 2 centres and surrounding community hospitals were reviewed for gestational age (GA) at the time of ultrasound, volume of amniotic fluid, and urinary-tract abnormality. Results: Thirty-four patients with proven PUV and prenatal sonograms were identified (1992-2004). Eighteen patients had abnormalities on their prenatal sonogram, with poor outcome in 5 (mean follow-up, 8 years [1-13 y]). No specific features were identified on prenatal sonogram. Sixteen patients had normal prenatal sonograms, with poor outcomes in 2 (mean follow-up, 8 years [3-13y1]). There is an increased risk of an abnormal serum creatinine among those patients with an abnormal prenatal study, odds ratio (OR) 2.6 (95% confidence interval, 0.35-32). Conclusions: PUV represents a spectrum of disease severity. A normal prenatal ultrasound does not preclude PUV. The majority of patients with a normal prenatal examination have good outcomes. The OR suggests that there may be increased risk for poor outcome in those with an abnormal prenatal examination. A multicenter study is necessary to obtain a larger sample size and more precise ORs.
